Latest / Learn German with Fexingo / German Conjunctions: und, oder, aber
Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for a tiny but mighty German lesson today? Luna: Always. What are we learning? Lucas: We're focusing on three little words that connect everything: und, oder, and aber. They mean 'and', 'or', and 'but'. Luna: Oh, conjunctions! I remember those from English class. Let's hear them. Lucas: First, und. It's just like 'and'. Say it with me: und. Luna: Und. Und. Lucas: Perfect. Now in a sentence: Ich mag Kaffee und Kuchen. I like coffee and cake. Luna: Ich mag Kaffee und Kuchen. Oh, that's easy. Lucas: Exactly. Next, oder – 'or'. For example, Möchtest du Tee oder Kaffee? Would you like tea or coffee? Luna: Möchtest du Tee oder Kaffee? Oder. So similar to und but with an 'r'. Lucas: You've got it. Now aber – 'but'. Like: Ich mag Tee, aber nicht Kaffee. I like tea but not coffee. Luna: Ich mag Tee, aber nicht Kaffee. Aber. That's a good one for me – I love tea but coffee keeps me up. Lucas: So now you can connect phrases. Let's practice all three again. Und, oder, aber. Luna: Und, oder, aber. Und, oder, aber. Lucas: Great. Now another example: Ich habe einen Hund und eine Katze. I have a dog and a cat. Luna: Ich habe einen Hund und eine Katze. What about 'or'? Maybe: Hast du einen Hund oder eine Katze? Lucas: Perfect. Hast du einen Hund oder eine Katze? Do you have a dog or a cat? Luna: And aber: Ich mag Hunde, aber Katzen sind auch okay. Lucas: Nice one. You're already making sentences. Now let's imagine you're at a café. You could say: Ich möchte einen Kaffee und ein Stück Kuchen. Luna: Ich möchte einen Kaffee und ein Stück Kuchen. Or if I want a choice: Ich möchte einen Tee oder einen Saft. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to say 'but' for a preference: Ich möchte Kuchen, aber ich bin satt. I'd like cake, but I'm full. Luna: Hmm, I've been there. Und, oder, aber – they really do make a difference. Lucas: They do. And you know, putting these together really makes the language click. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with German, there's a simple way to keep these episodes coming. A couple of dollars a month on buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo genuinely helps us keep the show ad-free and focused on teaching. Luna: Yeah, totally. Every little bit makes a difference. We appreciate it so much. Lucas: Alright, let's try one more with aber: Er ist nett, aber laut. He is nice but loud. Luna: Er ist nett, aber laut. I know a few people like that. Lucas: exactly. Now let's review: und, oder, aber. Can you say them one more time? Luna: Und, oder, aber. Und, oder, aber. Got it. Lucas: Perfect. Practice connecting two things with und, offering a choice with oder, and disagreeing gently with aber. You'll be stringing sentences together in no time. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was short but super useful. Lucas: That's the plan – a little every day. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time.
