- 2:57Speaker 2: epic conversation man, not only from the basketball, but what
- 3:00Speaker 2: he's doing off the court to me is actually even
- 3:03Speaker 2: more impressive than what you have done on the court. Entrepreneur,
- 3:08Speaker 2: film producer, actor rapper.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean bart Oatmell. That's the fact.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Sounds it sounds good too, sports sports analysts all that,
- 3:25Speaker 2: we keep going going. But first of all, thank you for.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Having us, appreciate you, appreciate you being here, thanks for
- 3:31Speaker 4: having me.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So let's get into this conversation. But before I start,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I got it because like growing up, like you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: used to read slam magazines and all that, and like
- 3:44Speaker 2: coming from New York, like you know, a lot of
- 3:45Speaker 2: the influencers from New York. But I will never forget.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't even know if you remember this, but you
- 3:50Speaker 2: was in the drop top, was going to U C.
- 3:52Speaker 3: L A.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It was like a classic photo shoot, was in the
- 3:54Speaker 2: drop top and it was something like l A Savior,
- 3:57Speaker 2: King of La or something like that.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And I was just seeing palm trees and I'm like, yo,
- 4:00Speaker 3: I gotta go to LA beautiful like I said. And
- 4:04Speaker 3: then just watching your career from u C. L A
- 4:06Speaker 3: to the league.
- 4:07Speaker 2: So coming in the league out of LA, how was it?
- 4:10Speaker 2: How was it growing up in LA and being a man.
- 4:13Speaker 3: In l A. It was?
- 4:15Speaker 4: Uh, it was weird, man, because like you know, I
- 4:19Speaker 4: come from the East Side, and I would say, up
- 4:23Speaker 4: until U see LA, everything I was seeing was all
- 4:27Speaker 4: like on the first hand experience, you know what I mean.
- 4:30Speaker 3: But I'm still rooted in the east side, East East
- 4:34Speaker 3: l A.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Yeah, south Central, Okay, so he's still a one team.
- 4:38Speaker 4: So it's like Watts, you know, we border lote south Central.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Watch people think I'm from Compton, but I'm not from Compton,
- 4:45Speaker 4: from South central, borderline, Wats east Side the one team.
- 4:51Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Everybody like man from Compton Ling was just like nah,
- 4:55Speaker 4: go everywhere, you know what I mean. And I kind
- 4:58Speaker 4: of feel like this whole city raised me. But I'm like,
- 5:02Speaker 4: damn there from like a five block with the school.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Luckily we had a school there, Like that is my neighborhood.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we we I mean in the mid or early
- 5:11Speaker 3: two thousands.
- 5:11Speaker 5: We saw you a game, and so it was like, oh,
- 5:13Speaker 5: you must be from Compton because you like, we grew
- 5:16Speaker 5: up together. We played all together. He's nice, like, all right,
- 5:19Speaker 5: this is that's the confuse. So you're like just king
- 5:21Speaker 5: of all territories in La.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I remember I remembering a visitor, you know what I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 4: everybody cousin, cousin of relative depending on you know which color.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:44Speaker 4: So I can honestly say that, like, you know, when
- 5:47Speaker 4: I became my own agent, and then I rock on
- 5:49Speaker 4: my you know, my college teammate who was my agent,
- 5:52Speaker 4: Rico Hans, who was working me out. We was doing
- 5:55Speaker 4: our own little thing, you know what I mean. Like
- 5:57Speaker 4: I was able to make money for myself, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 4: but I don't think that I've made more off the court.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And you see that shit, you know what I mean.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Let's talk about that as as being you on agent,
- 6:08Speaker 2: once you make that switch to become your own agent.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I think it was twenty one. I was twenty one.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It was my third year. We were on our way
- 6:17Speaker 4: to Orlando to play Chasey McGrady. I think it was
- 6:22Speaker 4: like Game three, and I know it was coming back
- 6:26Speaker 4: from Game three. I had a triple double, and everybody
- 6:30Speaker 4: on the team was like, hey, nigga, you're gonna get
- 6:31Speaker 4: the backs and you don't even need the money for yourself.
- 6:35Speaker 3: So I was like, all right, cool, So I'm just
- 6:37Speaker 3: in the buck, you.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Know, I'm on the bus just listening. And then when
- 6:40Speaker 4: we beat our Landown, they was just like all of
- 6:43Speaker 4: thats was just like yo, like you next in line.
- 6:46Speaker 4: They was just like they started negotiating my contract as
- 6:51Speaker 4: I'm sitting right here like listening, like now you're gonna
- 6:54Speaker 4: get this, No, but you should be, you know, and
- 6:56Speaker 4: they was telling me all the possibilities because you got
- 6:59Speaker 4: you know, I listened to my vets, you know, to
- 7:01Speaker 4: David Westley's, Stacey Youngman, Eldon Campbell, PJ.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Brown.
- 7:05Speaker 4: They was all just talking about, you know, like what
- 7:08Speaker 4: I would get and what I would potentially get and
- 7:11Speaker 4: I'll never forget Eddie Jones, you know, and Dereck Colemen.
- 7:15Speaker 4: They was just like, yo, bro, you know, you don't
- 7:16Speaker 4: need an agent. You know, I got my lawyer. They
- 7:19Speaker 4: was flying with him. You know, I just got a lawyer,
- 7:21Speaker 4: do a deal, you know.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Pay I'm like that da da da. So that always
- 7:24Speaker 3: stuck in the back of my mind.
- 7:26Speaker 4: So when the playoffs was over, I was like, yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 4: for me to take this, what is what is the number.
- 7:33Speaker 3: If I'm max out? What is four percent of that?
- 7:36Speaker 3: All right?
- 7:36Speaker 4: I need to like I'm gonna gamble this on my family,
- 7:40Speaker 4: trying to build up my community, you know what I mean,
- 7:43Speaker 4: trying like take this money and heal like a part
- 7:49Speaker 4: of me, you know what I mean. That is like
- 7:52Speaker 4: I'm gonna need to like do some like you know
- 7:54Speaker 4: what I mean, some maintenance on myself and just on
- 7:58Speaker 4: my past, you know what I mean. So I rather
- 8:00Speaker 4: invested in my family, my friends, and you know, hopefully
- 8:03Speaker 4: they can get out or get in a space where
- 8:05Speaker 4: they can be comfortable enough where everybody.
- 8:08Speaker 3: You know can see a different space. You know.
- 8:10Speaker 5: So at twenty one, that's a pretty big decision. And
- 8:12Speaker 5: I'm wondering, now, is that the start of your entrepreneurial spirit?
- 8:16Speaker 5: Because you took that venture on yourself and said, I'm
- 8:19Speaker 5: bet on myself.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Oh I can do is Let me tried some other
- 8:21Speaker 3: avenues as well.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I think everything that I tried it was just like, oh,
- 8:26Speaker 4: I'm an idea person, you know what I mean, And
- 8:29Speaker 4: so I like to think about ideas and shit and
- 8:32Speaker 4: what I bring to the table. So when I did
- 8:35Speaker 4: take that lead, it just kind of happened like Vitamin
- 8:39Speaker 4: Water came and it was really I was supposed to
- 8:42Speaker 4: go to Sprite and my homeboy was leaving Sprite to
- 8:45Speaker 4: go to Vitamin Water.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I was like, man, don't go there, dog, That shit
- 8:49Speaker 3: ain't gonna be no good.
- 8:52Speaker 4: He's like, no, the founders are great. It's going to
- 8:55Speaker 4: be a great product. They just started, you know. And
- 8:57Speaker 4: then he started telling me about how, you know, building
- 9:02Speaker 4: the beverage company and like just the formulas and they
- 9:05Speaker 4: working on the formula and then I got a chance
- 9:07Speaker 4: to meet the founders, right and with that, it was like, well, shit,
- 9:11Speaker 4: I don't want to be at Sprite because if I
- 9:13Speaker 4: go to Sprite, they gonna realize I ain't got no agent,
- 9:16Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And Sprite ain't gonna do that.
- 9:18Speaker 4: But like throw me in a commercial, if you know
- 9:22Speaker 4: what I mean. I ain't really getting no commercial. It
- 9:24Speaker 4: was like, let's call the spade a spad. I may
- 9:26Speaker 4: get some like Baron Davis, Poster.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Krueger and shit like that, you know what I mean.
- 9:32Speaker 4: So I was just like fuck it, I just let
- 9:35Speaker 4: me go with you so I can learn marketing. And
- 9:38Speaker 4: I start pitching him. I'm like, yeah, well I don't
- 9:40Speaker 4: even need the money. Just like you know, I was
- 9:42Speaker 4: trying to figure out creative ways to like be a
- 9:45Speaker 4: part of the Vitamin Water team so I can learn
- 9:47Speaker 4: how to market and then if they got big enough.
- 9:51Speaker 4: At the time, it was like get it Ady, power Ad.
- 9:53Speaker 4: So I was like, Yo, if they get big enough
- 9:54Speaker 4: for power Ad, like, I want to shoot a commercial,
- 9:57Speaker 4: you know what I mean. I rather direct a commercial
- 9:59Speaker 4: than like be in a commercial. So let me try
- 10:01Speaker 4: and get all these NBA dudes and people to like funk.
- 10:04Speaker 3: With the brand.
- 10:05Speaker 4: And that's how I got turned on the Vitamin Water.
- 10:08Speaker 4: And then the Rebok deal. I was at Nike and.
- 10:12Speaker 5: You're in that legendary commercial. Yeah we can't like the dribble,
- 10:16Speaker 5: Yeah the dribble like that.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I was lucky.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Thing was crazy because you know, I was always a
- 10:22Speaker 4: Nike athlete, even in college.
- 10:24Speaker 3: U c l A was Rebod and I were Nikes
- 10:26Speaker 3: at U c l A. How did that work?
- 10:29Speaker 4: They d let's do what I want and not stop
- 10:32Speaker 4: me bro like, and I'll be like, yo, and we're
- 10:36Speaker 4: in the contract. Mean, where is the contract that I
- 10:39Speaker 4: signed and saying I gotta wear these Rebuds.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So it was a whole let's talk about that.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Because college sports is a big, big billion dollar industry,
- 10:48Speaker 2: shoe companies play a major part. Adidas, rebod really Adidas
- 10:52Speaker 2: at Nike, but Rebox is involved too sometimes. So being
- 10:56Speaker 2: at your school was one brand you wore another brand?
- 10:59Speaker 2: Did the coach come to you, did they put pressure
- 11:01Speaker 2: on the school or they just let.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You a whole bunch of shit? You gotta ask her
- 11:05Speaker 3: or watch it and recoil they like that.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I can't remember, but like it was always some ship
- 11:11Speaker 4: because they and then I have to like because we
- 11:15Speaker 4: really wanted the Irishes and they weren't coming off the Irishes.
- 11:19Speaker 4: So I was like, bro, we ain't fly, Like I'm
- 11:21Speaker 4: not just gonna be wearing just like these don't feel good.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Don't wear my nikes. And so I can put tape
- 11:27Speaker 3: on the Nikes.
- 11:28Speaker 4: So if you go and watch some of the U
- 11:30Speaker 4: c l A games, you'll see I got tape on
- 11:32Speaker 4: my shoes.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Number five, you know what I mean. And I had
- 11:36Speaker 3: on Nikes. That's crazy. So they just like.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Made the whole thing and then uh, crazy enough, I
- 11:41Speaker 4: run into iverson because we used to hang out at
- 11:43Speaker 4: the club because we couldn't get in, so we used
- 11:45Speaker 4: to be parking lot pimper and Iverson come to the club.
- 11:49Speaker 3: We finally get in with Ai and then he like, man,
- 11:52Speaker 3: what's up?
- 11:53Speaker 4: Man?
- 11:53Speaker 3: I love y'all? Doug. I was like man. He was like,
- 11:55Speaker 3: what can I do for you? I was like, man,
- 11:57Speaker 3: we just want to wear the next thing? You know?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Rebot sent this to iver since and we was playing
- 12:03Speaker 3: in irises.
- 12:04Speaker 2: So let's talk about this vitamin water situation. A lot
- 12:07Speaker 2: of people know a fifty cent story with viting water,
- 12:09Speaker 2: but they might not have know your involvement. So can
- 12:11Speaker 2: you break that down? You were investor in vitament Water. Yeah,
- 12:14Speaker 2: I invest your equity.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 4: So it was a marketing deal and it was like
- 12:20Speaker 4: the first of its kind because they said, well, we
- 12:22Speaker 4: can't pay with sprite can and I was like, well
- 12:25Speaker 4: what can you pay? And it was like, well we
- 12:27Speaker 4: can only pay this And I was like, well, shit,
- 12:29Speaker 4: that ain't no money, you know what I mean, Like
- 12:30Speaker 4: I'm just learning about tax So I said, how can
- 12:33Speaker 4: I avoid.
- 12:36Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 12:36Speaker 4: Like taxes? I don't know, That's just what I was thinking.
- 12:39Speaker 4: And I was like Yo, let me just like give
- 12:41Speaker 4: me that deal in equity. So I don't even want
- 12:47Speaker 4: I don't even want any money from you, you know
- 12:49Speaker 4: what I mean, because I know you don't have a
- 12:50Speaker 4: lot of money to spend on marketing. Just give me
- 12:52Speaker 4: that inequity and then let me see if I can
- 12:55Speaker 4: help you like extend the brand and like put it
- 12:58Speaker 4: in a movie or this and that, and.
- 13:02Speaker 3: That's what happened.
- 13:03Speaker 4: So for me, it gave me an opportunity to like
- 13:06Speaker 4: link with Game and lead, you know, start making movies
- 13:08Speaker 4: and being around the music space. And I was always
- 13:12Speaker 4: working out, so I always have vitamin water, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 4: with me.
- 13:15Speaker 3: So it was almost like the kind of like an
- 13:17Speaker 3: ambassador deal.
- 13:19Speaker 4: But you know I was just inside, like Yo Bro
- 13:21Speaker 4: Vitamin and when they got money, I would go tell
- 13:24Speaker 4: people like Yo Bro Vidamin Water got money, they get refrigerator.
- 13:27Speaker 3: On it, you know what I mean. Because I start
- 13:29Speaker 3: seeing the numbers and.
- 13:32Speaker 4: The equity of of what my equity, what that meant.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I started seeing that shit going up.
- 13:39Speaker 5: So that's crazy because the irony of it all is
- 13:42Speaker 5: that you didn't do the deal with Spraye the Coca
- 13:45Speaker 5: Cola Byes Vitamin Water, which actually on spray.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Right, But it was good to see that, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 4: I always say say that to say this. It was
- 13:54Speaker 4: good to see because before Coca Cola bottom, another company
- 14:00Speaker 4: came in and bought it, and so you got your
- 14:02Speaker 4: first distribution, like that first check, you know, when Tata
- 14:08Speaker 4: I think invested at like three hundred million for a
- 14:11Speaker 4: certain percentage, Like we got a check, bro, And that
- 14:14Speaker 4: check was like god, damn, Like you know what I mean,
- 14:17Speaker 4: that's like a that's a nice contract, like not a contract,
- 14:21Speaker 4: but a year's salary for like, you know, a potential
- 14:25Speaker 4: All star, you know what I mean.
- 14:26Speaker 3: So it's like damn.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Was like and then when the Coca Cola thing came
- 14:32Speaker 4: and it was just more on top of that. So
- 14:34Speaker 4: it was just I was like, yo, I need to
- 14:36Speaker 4: do more ship like this right, this is the this
- 14:39Speaker 4: is bad. This is where it's Did.
- 14:43Speaker 5: You did you lose a little bit of passion for
- 14:45Speaker 5: balling when you saw like I don't have to do
- 14:47Speaker 5: this and be on somebody else's eighty two game schedule.
- 14:49Speaker 5: I could actually make a career doing this. Did your
- 14:51Speaker 5: love for the game chase a little bit?
- 14:53Speaker 3: Nah?
- 14:54Speaker 4: I used to you know, I think words are powerful.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I used to always tell my friends, like man that
- 15:00Speaker 4: I'm gonna retire at thirty, take a couple of years off,
- 15:03Speaker 4: you know what I mean, get my business rights, then
- 15:05Speaker 4: come back because I don't want to fuck my body up.
- 15:09Speaker 3: But I just think that I was just hustling, you
- 15:13Speaker 3: know what I mean.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I think for me, like I did not have a timetable, right,
- 15:19Speaker 4: so NBA career, Like Don was happy to make it
- 15:23Speaker 4: to the NBA. So there's an NBA career and then
- 15:27Speaker 4: there's a life career. And I'm from LA, you know
- 15:32Speaker 4: what I mean. So a lot of like just like
- 15:36Speaker 4: being in the NBA was like a vacation, you know,
- 15:38Speaker 4: it was like a vacation and shit like that, and
- 15:40Speaker 4: it was like the best life you can live. But
- 15:42Speaker 4: like the life, you know what I mean, Like kept
- 15:46Speaker 4: feeling like, well, I see twenty five, you know what
- 15:51Speaker 4: I mean?
- 15:51Speaker 3: League like that, Yeah, bro, you're talking hell yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Because back then in the league, you know, it was
- 15:58Speaker 4: like it wasn't you know, we were we weren't. We
- 16:01Speaker 4: weren't like fashion icons or content dudes, or you couldn't
- 16:06Speaker 4: put out.
- 16:07Speaker 3: An album, you know what I mean.
- 16:08Speaker 4: We were, Uh, we were viewed a little different and
- 16:13Speaker 4: then remembering that era, you know, that's like that's like
- 16:17Speaker 4: the explosion of hip hop when hip hop really meet
- 16:21Speaker 4: the NBA and brands and they start exploiting the culture,
- 16:25Speaker 4: you know what I mean, are tapping in and investing
- 16:27Speaker 4: into the culture. So you had this energy of like
- 16:31Speaker 4: everybody got tattoos, everybody got braids, everybody got chains, everybody
- 16:37Speaker 4: trying to you know, people start to like start to
- 16:41Speaker 4: live out like the identity, you know what I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 4: and start representing more of where they came from, you
- 16:48Speaker 4: know what I mean. And so at the same time,
- 16:50Speaker 4: just the same thing like these rap you know, these
- 16:53Speaker 4: young kids is rapping. You know, you become a target,
- 16:59Speaker 4: you know what I mean, because now like your riches
- 17:03Speaker 4: separate you from everybody, from everybody, you know, you know
- 17:07Speaker 4: what I mean, but not like yo, who you are
- 17:10Speaker 4: and ship like that. But it's just people cannot they
- 17:14Speaker 4: see you here, you know what I mean. But when
- 17:16Speaker 4: they see you there, it's like it creates like an animosity,
- 17:22Speaker 4: you know what I mean, or or I call it attention,
- 17:29Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 17:30Speaker 5: At that time, obviously now there's so many players from
- 17:33Speaker 5: LA it's like that. Yeah, back then, it was something
- 17:37Speaker 5: like who was your kind of part from this city
- 17:39Speaker 5: that they can even you can lean on, right Like
- 17:41Speaker 5: Russ had, James Harden, Paul George and.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Prince but you know Telly, he had a quiet tame
- 17:49Speaker 4: from Compton. But Tay one of my best friends. So
- 17:51Speaker 4: you know, like for me, it was just like you
- 17:53Speaker 4: know me and just we always just who. Like the
- 17:57Speaker 4: thing about like what I was trying to do was
- 18:00Speaker 4: like and maybe like and people say I am like
- 18:03Speaker 4: this now try and do too much, But I was
- 18:05Speaker 4: trying to hoop.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I was trying to fuck with the hood. I was
- 18:09Speaker 3: trying to fix my family, you know what I mean.
- 18:11Speaker 4: And I was trying to show La dudes that, yo, homie,
- 18:16Speaker 4: like you don't have to change who you are. Oh
- 18:19Speaker 4: your fuck if you're a crip or a blood, you
- 18:21Speaker 4: know what I mean. Like we are hoopers, you know
- 18:24Speaker 4: what I mean. And so even like some of the
- 18:27Speaker 4: hardest gang bangers in La, you know, used to be
- 18:30Speaker 4: some of the best hoopers, right, so they legendary in
- 18:33Speaker 4: the street, legendary in high school. And my whole ship
- 18:37Speaker 4: was like, man, I want, I want I'm a part
- 18:41Speaker 4: of them.
- 18:42Speaker 3: We need to like peel the cap off of this
- 18:45Speaker 3: because over.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Here in the league they think we saw you know
- 18:49Speaker 4: what I mean. So it's like this big misperception of LA.
- 18:53Speaker 3: It was like Hollywood, it was showtime, you know, It's like.
- 19:00Speaker 4: And then the Clippers at the time they didn't really
- 19:03Speaker 4: like like matter that much until q Rich and d
- 19:07Speaker 4: Miles they yeah, tomorrow them, they kind of they kind
- 19:11Speaker 4: of changed it because they tapped into LA too, you
- 19:14Speaker 4: know what I mean. So big shout out to q
- 19:16Speaker 4: Rich and d Miles because they was going to the
- 19:19Speaker 4: high school games because they were still in high school.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Really, you know what I mean. So they was.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Messing with like the Trevor rees is, you know, uh,
- 19:26Speaker 4: they was hanging out with Bobby Brown's and you know
- 19:29Speaker 4: what I mean, people like that. That was like going
- 19:32Speaker 4: to uh, Darrell Rice games. They going to all the
- 19:35Speaker 4: dope high school dudes and so that that kind of
- 19:38Speaker 4: like gay the high school dudes, like oh shit, like.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Like this doing like two years older than me. So
- 19:44Speaker 3: that by them playing for the Clippers being there, that
- 19:47Speaker 3: was lit.
- 19:48Speaker 4: And then for me it was just like every time
- 19:50Speaker 4: I came home, it was just like, all right, I
- 19:53Speaker 4: gotta show these fools the way. Oh we got a
- 19:56Speaker 4: I got a private play. We're all going going to
- 19:59Speaker 4: New York playing a Rutger. Two other people we going,
- 20:02Speaker 4: you know what I mean, And most of them were hoovers. Right,
- 20:06Speaker 4: are people in the country who would never ever think
- 20:09Speaker 4: about playing a Rutger, think about going to New York,
- 20:13Speaker 4: and they needed to They needed to be in that
- 20:15Speaker 4: intensity and realize that, you know, like we can bring
- 20:21Speaker 4: we can bring the good ship and we can bring
- 20:23Speaker 4: all the good shit about La and spread around this country,
- 20:27Speaker 4: you know what I mean, So people can like tap
- 20:29Speaker 4: into We.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Do a perfect segue because you also are a film
- 20:32Speaker 2: producer and you have a couple of documentaries I want
- 20:36Speaker 2: to talk about but one Crips and Bloods.
- 20:39Speaker 3: What's that the name of it? Mad in America, Crypton
- 20:41Speaker 3: blood blud. Yeah, so talk about that and like LA.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Every time I come to LA, it's always interesting city
- 20:50Speaker 2: for me because I feel like because there's two cities
- 20:53Speaker 2: in one city, and because obviously you know the glitz,
- 20:56Speaker 2: the glamor. You run into Stevie one that just randomly
- 20:59Speaker 2: like it's magic who stuff like it just flies off
- 21:02Speaker 2: the sky like every even like good things always happen
- 21:04Speaker 2: for us when but you know the other side of LA.
- 21:07Speaker 2: But it's like you're going through neighborhoods and the neighborhood
- 21:10Speaker 2: don't even really look that bad, right, It looked like
- 21:12Speaker 2: the middle class neighborhood, you know what I'm saying. So
- 21:14Speaker 2: it's a very interesting dynamic. So why was it important
- 21:17Speaker 2: for you to tell that story to the world.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I think it was just a part.
- 21:24Speaker 4: It was like a part of my life that I
- 21:26Speaker 4: had to put a button up, you know what I mean,
- 21:29Speaker 4: and I could not figure out how to.
- 21:35Speaker 3: How to explain the shit, you know what I mean.
- 21:38Speaker 4: And so it was more so like let it like
- 21:42Speaker 4: if I can give them the like to explain themselves
- 21:46Speaker 4: from the first person perspective, then when they get to
- 21:50Speaker 4: the big screen, they'll see themselves.
- 21:53Speaker 3: They'll be able to hear themselves.
- 21:54Speaker 4: It's like therapy, O, you know what I mean, and
- 21:57Speaker 4: all these you know, and then shout out to ball
- 22:01Speaker 4: for basters of the party, you know what I mean,
- 22:03Speaker 4: Because like that was that was the one before ours
- 22:06Speaker 4: that kind of kicked the door.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Of you know what I mean, and it was bones perspective.
- 22:11Speaker 4: So that was just inspired to be like, all right,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I wanted to link with Stacey Peralta, who it did
- 22:16Speaker 4: Dowktown z E Boys, and so that was like, let's
- 22:21Speaker 4: tell it in a format of like, this is the
- 22:23Speaker 4: history of la you know what I mean, Here's Hollywood,
- 22:28Speaker 4: here's this community.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Is it being properly served? Right? And then here's where
- 22:34Speaker 3: we were, right.
- 22:35Speaker 4: So I learned about the history of like my ogs
- 22:40Speaker 4: grandfather and you know, people like that just being here.
- 22:44Speaker 3: And we didn't start out like that, right right, right,
- 22:47Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I had that conversation the
- 22:49Speaker 3: other day.
- 22:50Speaker 5: It was about the how things was z owned, how
- 22:54Speaker 5: the railroad was built. It was very intentional to make
- 22:57Speaker 5: sure that people stayed in one place.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Absolutely redlining line. Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 4: And I just came back shooting a show called Small
- 23:06Speaker 4: Business Revolution season six with Deluxe and Amanda Brickman, and
- 23:12Speaker 4: we went to Minnesota. So I was there doing the
- 23:15Speaker 4: George Boyd verdict. I was there doing the Dante Riot funeral,
- 23:19Speaker 4: just in the city. But same thing. They built this
- 23:23Speaker 4: big ass freeway in the middle of the most thriving
- 23:28Speaker 4: black community, you know what I mean. And so when
- 23:31Speaker 4: I'm watching this gang doc, it was like, I want
- 23:33Speaker 4: us to see that, like, yo, one, this shit just
- 23:37Speaker 4: didn't happen and appear and month he didn't wake up
- 23:40Speaker 4: with a gun. It's a dope, you know what I mean.
- 23:42Speaker 4: It's like we were actually like.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Clubs.
- 23:47Speaker 4: We had infrastructure, we had places to go, we had clubs.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Like it was different.
- 23:52Speaker 4: And when they read line, railroads, freeways, all that shit
- 23:57Speaker 4: is device.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Yeah that in Chicago too, same way the city was
- 24:01Speaker 5: built on the north side to the south. Another documentary
- 24:04Speaker 5: that you did, like you said that filt the history especially,
- 24:06Speaker 5: that's a big part of la inner city culture is gangs.
- 24:10Speaker 5: But did the Julie documentary too to the history of ball. Yeah,
- 24:14Speaker 5: so obviously the inspiration you're playing basketball, But how did
- 24:17Speaker 5: that process go when you were document that.
- 24:20Speaker 3: The Jew It has just been a big part of
- 24:22Speaker 3: my life.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I first played in the Jew I think I was
- 24:25Speaker 4: like thirteen years old and it was like a night game.
- 24:29Speaker 3: So it's like the drew as adults, you know.
- 24:32Speaker 4: I got to see that and being a part of
- 24:34Speaker 4: that and Dino Smiley, who he meant in the community, right,
- 24:38Speaker 4: and what like a Dino Smiley basketball camp shirt.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Meant for a kid for that summer, you know what
- 24:44Speaker 3: I mean.
- 24:44Speaker 4: It's like you're getting some free shit, you getting basketball skills,
- 24:47Speaker 4: and you have a time in a life and you're
- 24:49Speaker 4: gonna feel safe. And so Dino was always like you
- 24:53Speaker 4: know that guy, and so you know, for me, it
- 24:56Speaker 4: just made sense, like and I wanted to tell a
- 24:57Speaker 4: bigger story, but like that was like my first time
- 25:01Speaker 4: doing the documentary, so I didn't really know what I.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Was doing, but I wanted to tell the story of.
- 25:07Speaker 4: The little engine that could, right, and if you serve
- 25:11Speaker 4: your community, if you just stayed the course, if you
- 25:14Speaker 4: just stick to it and you got the right values
- 25:17Speaker 4: and the right principles, you know, like that that seed
- 25:20Speaker 4: is going to grow, you.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Know what I mean.
- 25:22Speaker 4: And having the Drew, you know, now the Jew is
- 25:25Speaker 4: bigger in a bigger facility, but like never be able
- 25:30Speaker 4: to capture that essence, and so wanting to tell the
- 25:35Speaker 4: story of just La Basketball as it pertained to the
- 25:38Speaker 4: Drew as a safe haven in the hood, right and
- 25:42Speaker 4: like you can have like there are incredible people in
- 25:45Speaker 4: the hood.
- 25:46Speaker 3: It's not just gangs and drugs.
- 25:47Speaker 4: So you go with the gang documentary to show like what,
- 25:51Speaker 4: all right, this is what you guys think, you seeing
- 25:53Speaker 4: what you think you know. But then in the Jew,
- 25:56Speaker 4: it's some of these gang members right come to this
- 26:00Speaker 4: park right to make sure that these kids can hoop
- 26:04Speaker 4: and you know what I mean. So it's like you
- 26:05Speaker 4: just got to start peeling off the layers right to
- 26:09Speaker 4: really get.
- 26:10Speaker 3: You know, to the essence of l A.
- 26:12Speaker 4: And so from a content perspective, you know, I think
- 26:15Speaker 4: that's what I want to do for LA and really
- 26:18Speaker 4: just keep telling La stories.
- 26:20Speaker 2: You know, you're a true man of the people. Because
- 26:22Speaker 2: the first time we met him, we didn't actually meet him,
- 26:24Speaker 2: were supposed to shouts with my brother Chris Gotti. He
- 26:26Speaker 2: was in Dykeman. Okay, he was on the court on Dykeman.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Was lit. Said you want to go to the skybox.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I was like, hell, yeah, there the skyboxes.
- 26:40Speaker 5: It was like we can we cross the court and
- 26:42Speaker 5: You're like, nah, it's kind of busy right now.
- 26:45Speaker 3: York on the side. Dykeman. How you can pay a
- 26:52Speaker 3: dykeman to the Julie. It's not.
- 26:55Speaker 4: It's two different things, Like you got to do both,
- 26:59Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like like you're gonna rocking
- 27:02Speaker 4: and true, that's gonna be a different feel. That's a
- 27:05Speaker 4: different feel, like a different type of it's gonna be
- 27:09Speaker 4: more similar to a run, you know what I mean
- 27:12Speaker 4: that you would play. You know, that's like your prep run.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Dykeman is like your showcase, you know what I mean,
- 27:19Speaker 4: the court three fourths of the cord, dudes running on
- 27:23Speaker 4: the cord, dudes on the dudes on the side of smoke,
- 27:27Speaker 4: the cigarettes coaching. Can't even coach, you know. All your
- 27:33Speaker 4: handcuts doing is talk ship to the other. The drew
- 27:38Speaker 4: got that, but you know we got here. It's a
- 27:40Speaker 4: lot of little more structure like the drew. The Drew
- 27:45Speaker 4: was right, and Dykeman is like showcase pro like it's
- 27:50Speaker 4: pro am street ball, you know what I mean, And
- 27:53Speaker 4: like they should both exist, they should both be live
- 27:56Speaker 4: stream and like exist on their own and more forms
- 27:59Speaker 4: of that, because it's just like it's giving dudes a
- 28:03Speaker 4: chance to like peel, you know what I mean.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Imagine all them dudes at dyking You're like.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Man, I did a stick of kid, but you know,
- 28:13Speaker 4: you know, but it's like it gives people a chance
- 28:16Speaker 4: to basketball, give people a chance to be normal.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Not and even defense, it's like it's giving them they
- 28:21Speaker 2: go there, they told they arguing, but it's like that's
- 28:25Speaker 2: the outlet, that's the entertainment, that's you know what I'm saying.
- 28:28Speaker 3: As opposed to just standing on the corner just you
- 28:29Speaker 3: know what I'm saying.
- 28:30Speaker 5: But I feel like this, where's the other place that
- 28:32Speaker 5: they can go that they're gonna see it.
- 28:33Speaker 2: They can't get into the next game, right, they can't
- 28:35Speaker 2: get into the Clippers game or no Lakers game. That's
- 28:38Speaker 2: the that's their Lakers game right there.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why I wanted to go to the Rutger. Man.
- 28:43Speaker 3: That's like when I got in the league, it was just.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Like I gotta go to the Rucker one because it
- 28:49Speaker 4: was just this East coast West coast beef, you know
- 28:53Speaker 4: what I mean. And then it was just East coast
- 28:55Speaker 4: West coast bias. When it came to who like the
- 28:59Speaker 4: West coast dude was some you know what I mean,
- 29:01Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah, lands now. But that's why I wanted
- 29:04Speaker 4: to go to the Rutger and play in the Rutger
- 29:06Speaker 4: because you.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Know, I wanted. I wanted. I wanted that New York
- 29:11Speaker 3: energy FA you know what I mean. And I just
- 29:14Speaker 3: no bullshit.
- 29:15Speaker 4: I just popped up in the park like the night before,
- 29:18Speaker 4: you know what I mean, I was shooting and uh,
- 29:20Speaker 4: I'll never forget it was Chris.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Chris Gotti was like yo, bro, I think Chris Gotti
- 29:24Speaker 3: took me. You played for Murder Inc. RT. Yeah, shout
- 29:27Speaker 3: to Chris.
- 29:28Speaker 4: But some people heard, like I was in the park
- 29:30Speaker 4: the night before. They was like, yo, he was in
- 29:32Speaker 4: the park by yourself. I'm like, yeah, man, Chris gott
- 29:37Speaker 4: he got me in. Then I came to Murder eight
- 29:39Speaker 4: and we shut it down. And when I when I
- 29:41Speaker 4: played in the Rucker the first time, that shit was
- 29:43Speaker 4: just so crazy, you know what I mean. And I
- 29:46Speaker 4: was like, yo, I have to break Oh my little
- 29:50Speaker 4: homies in LA back. Like I kept talking about it,
- 29:53Speaker 4: but it was just it was nothing I can talk
- 29:56Speaker 4: about it. It was like these dudes, if they experienced this,
- 29:59Speaker 4: they all bot to the league, you know what I mean.
- 30:02Speaker 4: And so the next year, man, we loaded.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Up the planes, we loaded up the.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Buses, and like that's where I wanted to spend my money,
- 30:09Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Give them experience. So these dudes can get.
- 30:12Speaker 4: That experience knowing that, like they're gonna be in the
- 30:15Speaker 4: league too, and once summer, o.
- 30:17Speaker 3: G they ain't gonna be young. How they like, how
- 30:20Speaker 3: they appreciate it. You gotta any of those guys that
- 30:24Speaker 3: you brought actually go to the league. Uh yeah, Pool,
- 30:28Speaker 3: Bobby Brown, I don't know.
- 30:31Speaker 4: It was so many people, Bro, that's crazy that Marcus
- 30:35Speaker 4: Williams was there.
- 30:36Speaker 3: That yeah yeah yeah, he.
- 30:43Speaker 4: Shout. Who else? There was some other people. You you
- 30:48Speaker 4: brought the All Star team Djon Thompson. No, I just
- 30:51Speaker 4: brought them the cup. I had Gang, Kenny Bruner, like
- 30:57Speaker 4: DiAngelo college Ray Young, right, got Ray Young with me.
- 31:03Speaker 3: He's another supporter too, Jerry Duprie. Yeah.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Uh, he like a street ball legend. But I had
- 31:09Speaker 4: brought like a street ball team too, you know, around games.
- 31:12Speaker 4: So we like just a case Gilbert came guilt, but
- 31:16Speaker 4: Gil you know, Gil on.
- 31:18Speaker 3: His own dye. You know, gi got made you Cas.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Let me ask you this, Triller, you're invested in that
- 31:25Speaker 2: as well, right, we recently heard about this obviously with
- 31:27Speaker 2: Swiss and Timberland. With Versus, of course, obviously everybody's heard
- 31:31Speaker 2: about that stitution. I don't think a lot of people
- 31:32Speaker 2: was familing. I wasn't familiar with that before that. But
- 31:35Speaker 2: were you involved with that before the Versus situation as
- 31:38Speaker 2: an investor?
- 31:39Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 31:40Speaker 4: Yeah, So what made you? What made you get into that?
- 31:42Speaker 4: What made me invest in Triller?
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 31:45Speaker 4: Oh man, you know I think, uh, you know, one
- 31:48Speaker 4: is a platform. I felt like, uh, you know, with
- 31:52Speaker 4: all the hoop hoop lie and the hype around TikTok,
- 31:55Speaker 4: you know, and TikTok is a great, great platform, great tool,
- 31:59Speaker 4: but I felt like truly had the opportunity to do
- 32:03Speaker 4: other things to separate itself.
- 32:06Speaker 3: And you know, when the opportunity.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Presented itself, it's just like, you know, you look at
- 32:11Speaker 4: the team, you look at the opportunity, opportunity for growth,
- 32:15Speaker 4: and it's like, all right, I like to put my
- 32:17Speaker 4: money in the company that ultimately is gonna invest in
- 32:22Speaker 4: the people in my community and my culture. And so
- 32:26Speaker 4: you know, just proud of them for doing that, doing
- 32:28Speaker 4: the fight, you know, getting versus that that was on that. Yeah,
- 32:35Speaker 4: they got some other stuff and like uh and then
- 32:37Speaker 4: we're working on some stuff as well.
- 32:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:40Speaker 4: So it's like good to be invested in a platform
- 32:42Speaker 4: that's invested in culture.
- 32:45Speaker 2: So when they approach you or you approach, like how
- 32:48Speaker 2: like when you wanted to be involved with it, you
- 32:49Speaker 2: already had a connection.
- 32:51Speaker 4: With them or man, I can't remember getting shout out
- 32:57Speaker 4: to Mike Liu. I got to introduced some like and
- 33:00Speaker 4: you know, we just hit it off and I just
- 33:03Speaker 4: saw his vision and what he was trying to do,
- 33:05Speaker 4: and you know it was a few other people. Like
- 33:08Speaker 4: I say, the greatest leaders are the best followers.
- 33:12Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 33:13Speaker 4: And sometimes and for me, I love to follow when
- 33:16Speaker 4: it comes to like investing. You know, there's smart a
- 33:18Speaker 4: lot of smart people out here. I'm not the smartest one,
- 33:22Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And people make good picks,
- 33:25Speaker 4: got good ideas and say things. So I just try
- 33:28Speaker 4: to like try and see what everybody else see.
- 33:31Speaker 3: So get into investments. Was that something natural that you
- 33:33Speaker 3: did or was it.
- 33:33Speaker 5: Somebody that introduced you because I know a lot of
- 33:36Speaker 5: NBA plays even now that they have the tech conference,
- 33:38Speaker 5: which is like that's pretty dope for the new age guys,
- 33:40Speaker 5: But you weren't from that that generation where that was happening.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Was there a trip that you took to like Silicon
- 33:46Speaker 5: Value networking? It was just like who'd you meet?
- 33:49Speaker 3: Nah man? I see?
- 33:50Speaker 4: You know that's the beauty of being your own agent,
- 33:52Speaker 4: and you're just like, hey, I want to build a
- 33:55Speaker 4: tech company, like you know what? Since I represent you,
- 34:00Speaker 4: you know what I mean? So like I say curiosity,
- 34:06Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying? So the vitamin water thing
- 34:11Speaker 4: was like I wouldn't say that. It was like, I mean,
- 34:15Speaker 4: I did invest, but it wasn't like an investment, Like
- 34:17Speaker 4: I didn't look at it like an investment.
- 34:19Speaker 3: I was looking at that.
- 34:20Speaker 4: Like, how do you build this marketing idea around an athlete?
- 34:25Speaker 3: Right?
- 34:26Speaker 4: What is the new market? What is new marketing value?
- 34:28Speaker 4: Then reboking was like, how do you get rebox to
- 34:31Speaker 4: pay for the private planes and all this shit, you
- 34:34Speaker 4: know what I mean? And pay for the lifestyle because
- 34:36Speaker 4: that's what musicians was used record couple of money for us,
- 34:39Speaker 4: So I like, I use that to like build up
- 34:41Speaker 4: this brdy cachet, you know what I mean. So that
- 34:44Speaker 4: was marketing and then the investments like that was just
- 34:51Speaker 4: that's just that was just a whole different kind of
- 34:53Speaker 4: like trajectory. After like I built a couple of tech
- 34:59Speaker 4: tech companies. So I build a company called ibeat you
- 35:02Speaker 4: dot com I beat you.
- 35:05Speaker 3: And it was check us out.
- 35:06Speaker 4: It was a social media based on competitions that you
- 35:10Speaker 4: can do with your friends. So you wake up in
- 35:12Speaker 4: the morning, you tag your friends and it's like, yo,
- 35:15Speaker 4: who got the flying sneaks?
- 35:17Speaker 3: So you just like a bunch of people post and
- 35:19Speaker 3: it was like voting.
- 35:20Speaker 4: So it was like similar to like Challenge, a platform
- 35:25Speaker 4: based on challenges or we had everything from karaoke limpsync
- 35:29Speaker 4: to the sentiment challenge to waste basket shooting and.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Like you look at now the evolution that takes us.
- 35:38Speaker 4: You're like before the phone. Yeah, you know, this was
- 35:42Speaker 4: before the phone. We had a company called scout Match
- 35:45Speaker 4: that would take kids and take mid major colleges, and
- 35:49Speaker 4: you know, at the time, people.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Were just starting to record on their phones.
- 35:53Speaker 4: And it was like, imagine if you can record all
- 35:55Speaker 4: your games and then submit that, you know, to a
- 35:58Speaker 4: platform where college could recruit you, and colleges who don't
- 36:02Speaker 4: have budgets could find adult player.
- 36:04Speaker 3: You know what I mean to play in the conference.
- 36:06Speaker 4: And so we tried that. We had team play, which
- 36:09Speaker 4: was like mentors. I forget the tag, but it was
- 36:17Speaker 4: it was like a mentorship program for kids, and it
- 36:20Speaker 4: was taking people like ourselves and a kid get to
- 36:24Speaker 4: pick their favorite five and follow like mentors and so
- 36:28Speaker 4: all that. I did all that and then I was like, man,
- 36:30Speaker 4: fuck this, I ain't no good.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Did you have a video game? We had a video
- 36:38Speaker 3: game meet.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Steve Nash, I believe Rondo Brandon Jennings, Candice Parker, and
- 36:44Speaker 4: for some odd reason.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Ernest What's Up.

- 39:40Speaker 3: Like people are getting hurt.
- 39:42Speaker 4: So when we were launching the game in the summer,
- 39:44Speaker 4: like nobody had time to kind of like promote the
- 39:47Speaker 4: game because they was coming back. Man, it was just
- 39:49Speaker 4: you know time. It was bad, but I still got
- 39:52Speaker 4: the game. It was a bucket getting buckets. I'm trying
- 39:57Speaker 4: to bring it back ki too. That pronounced that correctly.
- 40:02Speaker 4: What's the organic coffee?
- 40:04Speaker 2: Oh y, it's messing up names left and right to
- 40:09Speaker 2: super coffee, key to what's the what's the deal with that?
- 40:12Speaker 3: Just more healthy alternative, you know what I mean? Instead
- 40:16Speaker 3: of sugar.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Just thinking about I mean one, it's it's super coffee,
- 40:23Speaker 4: drink super coffee.
- 40:24Speaker 3: What is super coffee?
- 40:25Speaker 4: Super coffee is a keto coffee that basically is more
- 40:30Speaker 4: of a protein coffee, get energy, don't have any sugar,
- 40:34Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 40:35Speaker 3: So it's like it's really good tasting, right.
- 40:39Speaker 4: It has all the nutrients and all the coffee that
- 40:41Speaker 4: you can get, but it's just a lot of sugar.
- 40:44Speaker 5: You spoke about college students, but it's the guys their company.
- 40:50Speaker 3: It's three brothers you know. Again invested in that as
- 40:53Speaker 3: well investing. So what so, what what do you look for?
- 40:56Speaker 2: Because you invest in a lot of companies, some workout,
- 40:58Speaker 2: some that's just part of the game.
- 41:00Speaker 3: What are you looking for?
- 41:01Speaker 2: Because I'm sure people pitch you all the time and
- 41:02Speaker 2: I got this all the time.
- 41:04Speaker 3: What do you look for.
- 41:04Speaker 2: To say, Okay, this is something I'm interested in or
- 41:06Speaker 2: this is I'm not interested in this?
- 41:08Speaker 3: Uh.
- 41:10Speaker 4: One, I have a good conversation with the founders to
- 41:14Speaker 4: see like how well they know, how passionate they are
- 41:18Speaker 4: about what they're doing, and is this something that they're
- 41:21Speaker 4: going to stick to for the long haul, you know
- 41:24Speaker 4: what I mean? I think that's key. And then two,
- 41:28Speaker 4: what is it? What's the idea? What's their knowledge base?
- 41:31Speaker 4: And that ideas subject matter? Three, I start to like
- 41:36Speaker 4: think about my ideas and if I'm hearing you know,
- 41:42Speaker 4: where they want to go, and I'm thinking about you know, ultimately,
- 41:46Speaker 4: I'm trying to see their vision right. And a lot
- 41:50Speaker 4: of times, you know, great entrepreneurs are you know, head
- 41:53Speaker 4: down all the time and just you know, working to
- 41:56Speaker 4: build it their builders, and sometimes they they have the
- 42:00Speaker 4: vision and they just need somebody to like share the vision,
- 42:04Speaker 4: you know what I mean, so that they don't go crazy,
- 42:06Speaker 4: you know, building things. And so once we have that
- 42:09Speaker 4: like aligned vision, then I'm always like my dollars goes
- 42:14Speaker 4: towards investing in people that I think I can help,
- 42:18Speaker 4: because that's how I learned.
- 42:18Speaker 3: From vitamin water, you know what I mean. It's like
- 42:20Speaker 3: how can I invest?
- 42:22Speaker 4: But then also how can I put more people in
- 42:26Speaker 4: to the company or get more people to invest or
- 42:30Speaker 4: you know, help market or branded or promoted right, And
- 42:34Speaker 4: it has to be something that just you know, want
- 42:37Speaker 4: aligns with our goals. And our goals is to like
- 42:39Speaker 4: build a better ecosystem and make sure that black people
- 42:42Speaker 4: got you know, a piece of action and a piece
- 42:45Speaker 4: of the rock. Make sure we invest in black women,
- 42:48Speaker 4: you know, women in general, women of color. Make sure
- 42:50Speaker 4: that you know, our portfolio of companies you know, looks
- 42:54Speaker 4: like you know what people would say, the minority of
- 42:58Speaker 4: the world looks like you know what I mean.
- 43:00Speaker 3: And so we're not just.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Focused on you know, dollars, right, We're focused on you know,
- 43:09Speaker 4: I think this is my life trajectory is to make
- 43:12Speaker 4: sure that we're building the right community right of us,
- 43:17Speaker 4: so we can raise it up another level so that
- 43:21Speaker 4: next generation can you know, take it further.
- 43:24Speaker 5: So you said that the mentorship piece of app, which
- 43:28Speaker 5: is pretty commendable. Uh, and now you're talking about trying
- 43:32Speaker 5: to change the trajectory of the futures of lives. And
- 43:33Speaker 5: so is that the division for unrest because I've read
- 43:38Speaker 5: that it's a college savings app us UNS.
- 43:41Speaker 3: I'm sorry now shouting the trip the way home term.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Yeah, never mess, but it was on the table contact.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I'm sorry you mess. You That's is dope, because.
- 44:03Speaker 4: You know, I start thinking about, like, you know, five
- 44:06Speaker 4: twenty nine. You know, you know, from the time that
- 44:11Speaker 4: I was like twenty something, I start every year on
- 44:14Speaker 4: my birthday saving money for my nieces and nephews.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Before I had kids.
- 44:18Speaker 4: And then when I had kids, I was like, damn, dude,
- 44:21Speaker 4: like I want to know what.
- 44:23Speaker 3: I'm doing for my kids.
- 44:24Speaker 4: And even though I know that my kids have like
- 44:26Speaker 4: the college you know, taken care of, I still want
- 44:30Speaker 4: to know, right, So I set up a Units account
- 44:33Speaker 4: and committed to like fifty dollars a month, right, just
- 44:37Speaker 4: so I could see on my own, you know, the
- 44:41Speaker 4: power of saving for your kid, right, And so for me,
- 44:46Speaker 4: it was like an opportunity to like to learn what
- 44:50Speaker 4: financial literacy is by doing it, you know what I mean.
- 44:54Speaker 3: And I love you next one, because.
- 44:57Speaker 4: It gives you the opportunity to to, you know, invest,
- 45:02Speaker 4: have your family invests.
- 45:04Speaker 3: College is gifted, and so.
- 45:06Speaker 4: It has the core components, right and the offering right
- 45:11Speaker 4: of commitment. For if I go back in time, right
- 45:16Speaker 4: to when I first started as a rookie, I'd have
- 45:19Speaker 4: spent three million dollars just buying you know, everybody Units
- 45:24Speaker 4: accounts that I came in contact with, and I'd amassed them,
- 45:27Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And shit, especially all the
- 45:30Speaker 4: money that let's say we wasted or you know, buying
- 45:33Speaker 4: it out and like that, those could have all been
- 45:38Speaker 4: United accounts and it could have been motivation. So you know,
- 45:42Speaker 4: I'm constantly you know, investing against the things that you know,
- 45:48Speaker 4: I felt like, damn, if I would have did that thin,
- 45:51Speaker 4: you know, like South Central wouldn't be like it is,
- 45:54Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And so that kind of
- 45:56Speaker 4: leads me into these investments. So I can now champion
- 46:00Speaker 4: uns as hey start with twenty five dollars.
- 46:04Speaker 3: I'm right there with you, you know what I mean.
- 46:06Speaker 4: And I can tell you know, my sister or my
- 46:09Speaker 4: cousins start a Unis account now birthday we can all
- 46:13Speaker 4: gift you know what I mean. And it makes so
- 46:15Speaker 4: much sense. When we got kids and we got generations,
- 46:19Speaker 4: it's like how do we how do we uh, how
- 46:22Speaker 4: do we pass.
- 46:23Speaker 3: Wealth or or just money? Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 46:27Speaker 3: And that's the key.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Now what you said was something that we talked about before,
- 46:30Speaker 2: as far as you have like birthday parties with your
- 46:32Speaker 2: kids and instead of giving them gifts and stuff like that,
- 46:35Speaker 2: like you just have like a Fox twenty nine account
- 46:37Speaker 2: or you know up my account.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Was like, yeah, but you get a Units account. You
- 46:40Speaker 3: can just a sentence.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Now you didn't say twenty eyes and all that shit.
- 46:47Speaker 4: You open up the UNS you know, and I feel
- 46:50Speaker 4: like I'm a spokesman for it right now, like that shit,
- 46:54Speaker 4: that shit he lit because birthday party happens. Every body
- 47:00Speaker 4: in the family know that they can give one hundred
- 47:02Speaker 4: dollars twenty five dollars, five dollars something to that kid
- 47:06Speaker 4: for their future because some toys ain't gonna mean ship,
- 47:10Speaker 4: you know, in two months.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Right right, right right, So you're in the cannabis space,
- 47:16Speaker 2: I am no.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Yeah, drink can drink can, Yeah, revolutionary, It's dope. That
- 47:25Speaker 4: ship is delicious, bro, what's the deal with that? It's delicious.
- 47:30Speaker 3: So it's cannabis, it's soda, it's a tonic.
- 47:32Speaker 4: It's a cannabis infused tac tonic. And uh man, this
- 47:38Speaker 4: ship is delicious. The lime HALLOWEENO, Like I got some
- 47:42Speaker 4: in here.
- 47:42Speaker 3: Oh, we're gonna taste Mike gonna taste it. After always
- 47:47Speaker 3: says for that, you know, for that slow fad, that
- 47:49Speaker 3: smooth fad.
- 47:52Speaker 4: And you know a lot of people smoke, you know,
- 47:54Speaker 4: and smoking is you know, not always the most comfort
- 48:00Speaker 4: a bull thing for other people if it's a tight
- 48:02Speaker 4: room or the smell, and you know, for me, like
- 48:06Speaker 4: you know, I smoke wig, you know, and if I
- 48:10Speaker 4: don't want to, if I'm going to a meeting, you
- 48:12Speaker 4: know what I mean, like going like I'm going out
- 48:14Speaker 4: to dinner, I don't want to come to the table,
- 48:17Speaker 4: you know smell Yeah, no, bro, because because you know
- 48:21Speaker 4: how people are, I know what you like.
- 48:28Speaker 3: I don't want to deal with that ship. You really
- 48:31Speaker 3: envision it being an alcohol alternative. It is, I think,
- 48:35Speaker 3: you know, for me or you.
- 48:37Speaker 4: I mean, it can be an alcohol alternative and you
- 48:40Speaker 4: can mix it.
- 48:41Speaker 3: You know.
- 48:43Speaker 4: I've been just using it, like sometimes I get a
- 48:45Speaker 4: hangover and it's like, yo, you know, you don't want
- 48:48Speaker 4: to smoke. You just drink the drink the can. You
- 48:50Speaker 4: be chilling for the whole day. You know, drink can.
- 48:54Speaker 4: It's like drinking can change your mind. Some chill drink
- 48:58Speaker 4: can watch some Amazon and chills. It's like it's cool
- 49:03Speaker 4: because they don't really like you know, like it don't
- 49:07Speaker 4: disrupt your fade, you know what I mean, And don't
- 49:09Speaker 4: disrupt like you your equilibrium, you know, like some of
- 49:13Speaker 4: these edible companies and ship like that, like you need
- 49:16Speaker 4: an edible you drink something you don't even like there
- 49:20Speaker 4: is no consistency from like this bottle to.
- 49:24Speaker 3: I'm glad you said that because I don't. I don't smoke.
- 49:26Speaker 3: I don't. It's the vitamin water of cannabis and pews.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I'm around people that have to have eight edibles before,
- 49:32Speaker 2: and I'm wondering if like they got to be it's
- 49:36Speaker 2: not all the same because I've seen people hallosin it,
- 49:38Speaker 2: but they're on LSD like like like.
- 49:40Speaker 3: It's just an edible. Like that's what I said, What
- 49:44Speaker 3: are they putting in these things? It's the best repas.
- 49:47Speaker 3: I'll let you go. No, no, no, I don't know. I
- 49:50Speaker 3: don't know either. I don't do edibles. I know some people.
- 49:56Speaker 3: So it's like so I've seen some stories.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Uh it's like the roller coaster that just keeps going up,
- 50:04Speaker 5: like sometimes like yes, in terms of fade, you just
- 50:07Speaker 5: you know, you want to be here and you know,
- 50:09Speaker 5: nice come down like sometimes with these edible experiences, just
- 50:12Speaker 5: like the roller coaster keeps going up and I feel
- 50:14Speaker 5: like the seat belt just came over.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Not show bro.
- 50:18Speaker 4: I've been and I've been shrying, like you know, like edibles,
- 50:22Speaker 4: you know what I mean, just to like figure it out.
- 50:25Speaker 3: But some of them ships be like.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Good, you know, like say, no motherfucking gummy bears. These
- 50:36Speaker 4: motherfuckers just sleep bears, Like these motherfucker gummy bears coming
- 50:39Speaker 4: come out out of the pack up, and I'm telling
- 50:44Speaker 4: you they'd be good, you know what I mean. So
- 50:46Speaker 4: you gotta be aware of that. But that's why I
- 50:49Speaker 4: like can because I you know, I can drink and
- 50:51Speaker 4: be having a fad and like oh this ship good
- 50:53Speaker 4: and I ain't gonna be like climbing the walls and
- 50:56Speaker 4: ship like that, thinking I'm smoke.
- 50:58Speaker 3: So we spoke to Al Harrington, We spoke to John Sally.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Now you and comm of Denominated, all you guys playing
- 51:04Speaker 2: the league and all you guys are involved in the
- 51:05Speaker 2: cannabis industries.
- 51:07Speaker 4: I'm not involved like that. Okay, I'm not involved like them.
- 51:10Speaker 4: Thoseys are like but it's a lot of NBA. They
- 51:12Speaker 4: are experts, you know what I mean. They were an
- 51:15Speaker 4: experts surrounded and you know our Alan John, they've been
- 51:19Speaker 4: one of two of the pioneers. I would say Al
- 51:22Speaker 4: Viola for what he's doing, you know, kind of pushing
- 51:25Speaker 4: culture and just like you know, lifting this heavy thing
- 51:28Speaker 4: you know on the shoulder by employing us, you know,
- 51:33Speaker 4: just doing all the things right.
- 51:34Speaker 3: And Sally, you know he's had his.
- 51:36Speaker 4: And printing it from you know, him being a vegan
- 51:39Speaker 4: and looking at it and food and oils and things
- 51:42Speaker 4: like that. Me, I'm just looking for the good, right
- 51:46Speaker 4: opportunity and then I make content. So you know, we
- 51:50Speaker 4: were writing we movies and you know, trying to figure
- 51:53Speaker 4: out podcasts and things like that. So that's really my
- 51:56Speaker 4: approach on an industry is like from a content perspective,
- 52:01Speaker 4: how can we create.
- 52:03Speaker 3: The next movie? Like what's the next great cannabis movie
- 52:06Speaker 3: that's like how high? Yeah, in one they bust it.
- 52:10Speaker 3: They may how high too, well, they.
- 52:12Speaker 4: May high too, but you know you got to make
- 52:15Speaker 4: you got to make how high you can? You know,
- 52:17Speaker 4: like you want we want to make like original ship
- 52:20Speaker 4: that feels like you know, it's authentic for this era,
- 52:24Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And so you know, remixing
- 52:28Speaker 4: and ship is cool, but it ain't cool when you
- 52:32Speaker 4: got a.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Lot of doulpe.
- 52:34Speaker 4: Mother fuck it's out here, it's right and ship, you know,
- 52:38Speaker 4: So we try and look at it from that perspective to.
- 52:41Speaker 3: How do you feel about the leade? Like the league?
- 52:44Speaker 3: The power structur in the league.
- 52:45Speaker 2: I feel like the NBA is completely different NFL where
- 52:47Speaker 2: the players have a lot more power than and like
- 52:51Speaker 2: and even now like these contracts are starting to change,
- 52:53Speaker 2: like Lebron's doing like the shorter term contracts. I noticed
- 52:56Speaker 2: that a lot more players are doing that. Well, how
- 53:00Speaker 2: do you feel about the power structure in the league
- 53:03Speaker 2: between the players and the owner?
- 53:04Speaker 3: You think it's balance is good? Well, I think it's one.
- 53:08Speaker 4: It's a great relationship or the workings between the union
- 53:13Speaker 4: and the league. And then you see the players in
- 53:17Speaker 4: their union and the union standing up by the players,
- 53:20Speaker 4: and then the league understanding, right, what's happening in the world,
- 53:26Speaker 4: and have their intendents to understand where.
- 53:29Speaker 3: You know, they kind of me in the middle.
- 53:31Speaker 4: And so you know, I always listen to Adam Silver
- 53:34Speaker 4: and he says, you know, he treats it like a partnership.
- 53:37Speaker 4: And when you look at the players, it is a
- 53:39Speaker 4: partnership that they're approaching it, you know, and so they
- 53:42Speaker 4: have every right to signing these one year deals, two
- 53:45Speaker 4: years deals.
- 53:46Speaker 3: It's a player's league. It's their league.
- 53:50Speaker 4: And you see the changing of the guards of different
- 53:52Speaker 4: owners and more owners are coming in starting to understand
- 53:55Speaker 4: that it's a player's league, and you know, they're structuring
- 54:00Speaker 4: the infrastructure of the organization to like build a player
- 54:04Speaker 4: friendly ecosystem because that's gonna you know, equate to championships
- 54:09Speaker 4: and superstars, you know, coming to the team.
- 54:11Speaker 3: So I like the relationship.
- 54:14Speaker 4: I like the fact that you know NBA guys, you know,
- 54:17Speaker 4: especially Lebron and Kyrie everybody, like people express themselves, right,
- 54:24Speaker 4: and I think that is they are the pioneers because
- 54:28Speaker 4: they're the ones that we see the most, you.
- 54:31Speaker 3: Know what I mean.
- 54:32Speaker 4: And you know I always took my hat to them,
- 54:35Speaker 4: whether they right or wrong. It's like they put themselves
- 54:39Speaker 4: out there to be vulnerable, you know what I mean,
- 54:41Speaker 4: to make mistakes, but to also you know, they're doing
- 54:44Speaker 4: it from a place where where it's complete, you know
- 54:48Speaker 4: what I mean, in this whole and so you know,
- 54:50Speaker 4: I just kind of I agree with.
- 54:53Speaker 3: With the players just keep pushing the envelope.
- 54:57Speaker 4: And I think it's a testament to the league because
- 55:01Speaker 4: the league is listening to the players, right, They're not
- 55:04Speaker 4: turning them death here.
- 55:06Speaker 5: So you obviously a content creator, and you've told a
- 55:11Speaker 5: few LA stories. We got the Christon Bloods Drew League.
- 55:16Speaker 5: What's the next l A story that you want to tell?
- 55:18Speaker 5: Because like I'm looking at the walls, I see Mount
- 55:20Speaker 5: west Moore up here, Unt west On here, I see
- 55:25Speaker 5: Well we missing Kendrick and Dre.
- 55:28Speaker 4: But I guess we got some more got What's what's
- 55:33Speaker 4: the next story you.
- 55:34Speaker 3: Want to tell?
- 55:34Speaker 5: Because I'm thinking this this might not be a bad one.
- 55:37Speaker 5: That the impact on the music from from a dre
- 55:40Speaker 5: to a snoop to a pot to.
- 55:42Speaker 3: A game and then Kendrick and Nick, I'm down.
- 55:49Speaker 4: I just directed my first documentary, I mean ship, my
- 55:53Speaker 4: first feature film on Dominoes. Yeah, Domino doing a game
- 56:01Speaker 4: piece like Boys in the Hood, so them.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Type of Domino so it's like a comedy. Uh.
- 56:09Speaker 4: It was my first time directing the feature film, so
- 56:12Speaker 4: you know, that comes out June eleventh, and then we
- 56:16Speaker 4: got the studio, so we're doing like our podcast.
- 56:19Speaker 3: Uh.
- 56:20Speaker 4: I think our next kind of documentary is on LA
- 56:23Speaker 4: basketball and just like the evolution of LA basketball, so
- 56:27Speaker 4: we can drill in into like all the dope high
- 56:30Speaker 4: schools and tell many docs. Yeah, but I'm just excited
- 56:35Speaker 4: for this Domino movie to come out. I directed that,
- 56:38Speaker 4: and then I feel like my next you know directorial
- 56:42Speaker 4: movie is this movie that I want to do is
- 56:46Speaker 4: like a basketball kind of hood movie, like a he
- 56:49Speaker 4: Got Game meets Boys in the Hood, and so like
- 56:52Speaker 4: that's what I'm really focused on. But you know, like
- 56:56Speaker 4: comedy is the ship that I kind of naturally been
- 56:59Speaker 4: gravitating too, or on the documentary side, just kind of
- 57:03Speaker 4: serious ship. So I've been trying to play in different spaces.
- 57:07Speaker 4: But my next feature should be like kind of like
- 57:11Speaker 4: a hardcore drama around like this basketball, you know, something
- 57:16Speaker 4: that kids in high school basketball players can relate to.
- 57:21Speaker 2: So music is a passion of yours. I love music,
- 57:23Speaker 2: man music, I love the DJ big beats. So is
- 57:28Speaker 2: this something that you're going, I know, obviously you have
- 57:31Speaker 2: an album coming.
- 57:32Speaker 3: Out, Bartolmeal got an album coming got so many different Is.
- 57:45Speaker 2: This something you're going production company, record label or just
- 57:48Speaker 2: more of a passion project.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Yeah, so I just tryed. I started producing because I
- 57:54Speaker 4: was making this movie and I was like, ship, well,
- 57:57Speaker 4: we ain't got no money to like a four.
- 57:59Speaker 3: And no roader without me asking for favors.
- 58:04Speaker 4: So I started producing, you know, and I started like
- 58:08Speaker 4: bringing the homies in producers for them.
- 58:10Speaker 3: So we had put together like this cool ass soundtrack.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Then Mike and Keys came in, and you know, they
- 58:16Speaker 4: kind of like brought the professional you know, and brought
- 58:19Speaker 4: the quality.
- 58:20Speaker 3: Of the sound.
- 58:21Speaker 4: But just even in the movie and you know it
- 58:24Speaker 4: was really like just like a startup, but the passion
- 58:27Speaker 4: was always there from DJing and like once I start
- 58:31Speaker 4: learning how to make the beat and sample, it was
- 58:33Speaker 4: just like yo, all right, after I play basketball, I'm
- 58:37Speaker 4: just gonna make me you know, I want to make
- 58:39Speaker 4: music because I feel like just the energy in the
- 58:43Speaker 4: studio is just create so many ideas.
- 58:46Speaker 3: And you know, I love.
- 58:47Speaker 4: To write, so I'm just like constantly writing, constantly creating,
- 58:51Speaker 4: you know. And whether I'm djaying or just making a
- 58:54Speaker 4: beat or can't make a beat or can't write a
- 58:56Speaker 4: song or can't you know, write something, you know, uh,
- 59:00Speaker 4: it still put me in like the same space that
- 59:03Speaker 4: I feel.
- 59:03Speaker 3: Like I am in on the court.
- 59:05Speaker 2: I want to ask you two questions. Well, one a
- 59:08Speaker 2: hip hop question. Who's your your top five l A rappers?
- 59:13Speaker 3: Uh? Nip Kendrick Snoop, domb Kennedy, Yeah yeah, dark Horse
- 59:26Speaker 3: in the race? Uh game.
- 59:29Speaker 5: I'm about to say, yeah, that's fine, that's fine.
- 59:33Speaker 3: I was no Ice Cube Q six six played a
- 59:39Speaker 3: major part.
- 59:40Speaker 4: Yeah Q six I mean yeah, I say cube Cube
- 59:45Speaker 4: as like he would be number one, Like as a storyteller,
- 59:49Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like like, yeah, he was
- 59:51Speaker 4: a rapper, but like the whole n w A thing,
- 59:54Speaker 4: like I was thinking I was a kid. Yeah, I
- 59:56Speaker 4: was like a kid during that. And so like my
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: my ice Cube was like about our Westside connection, you
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: know what I mean.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: That's a different Friday.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: Like Cube is like the motherfucker like people want to be,
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: you know what I mean. Like Cuba was like the
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: dude like damn dog, Like look how he did that,
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: you know, and how you flip that? But you know
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: it's uh when you're talking about like you know all
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: those dudes who are who are rap? Who raped l A?
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: You know what I mean, It's like that's that's an
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: l A vibe. You know what.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: That's a good list. That's my list outside of Duncan.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: But outside of that, that would be my list.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I take Dom over over ice Cube because you
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: know Dom is gonna give your tour LA. So when
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: you first moved to LA, I always say, you know,
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: you want to buy a Dom Kennedy album because he
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: gonna show you all the flyesh. He gonna talk about
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: just like what it is to be l A. We
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: fly and be like a real LA. Megive you feel
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: what I'm saying.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: One one question that I had about negotiating contract. How
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: was it negotiating contract with ownership as a as.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Your own agent. Was it like a weird dynamic or
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: was it just easy?
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: Because uh so when I when I when I left
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: my first agent aren't telling him.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Then I hired a dude.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: Uh, I hired an agent, and I hired an agent
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: just to like negotiate that contract. And so the way
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: that the meeting went when he was negotiating with the
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: GM was like, yo.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: You know. Represent Barry was like, yeah, we want to
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: do this, then I'll put it on mute. I'd be like, yo,
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: I tell him this, And that's how our conversation went.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: And then, uh, funny enough, I wanted him to partner
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: with you know, one of my best friends in college
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: teammates and be like, yo, take this young dude on
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: your wing and then what's start a big agency?
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: And I like Lebron did Yeah, but he won't. He
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: he wasn't fucking with us, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: And I learned something about that, you know, just being
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: like an older black dude is like even if you
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: don't feel like you know what I'm saying, like, you
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: gotta fuck with the next generation because we're gonna hate
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: you and then we're gonna out do it and we're
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: gonna rock it out, and it just builds so much animosity.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: So he didn't fuck with my hommie.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: Man, it was just me and my homie, Rico and
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: Todd Rico, and we was like some real live entourage shit.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: So then the next contract, you.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: Know, we sat there like a team and Todd Todd
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: handled you know, Todd handled itself.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: And people used to always say, like.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: Man, why he got hearing me's so young and da
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: da da da, And I was like, man, I don't
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: give a ship because like, by the time I retire,
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: like he will be where you guys are, and he
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: will have young dudes that believe in him and the
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: like they go for me. It was like for us
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: to do it so differently, you know what I mean
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: that like by the time he got to a point
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: where he had, you know, his maturity or hit his
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: veteran status in the game, he would see all kinds
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: of different ways, you know, uh, to just be in.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: In the industry, will become a great agent.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: And then you look look at Rika Hans, he working
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: with h the Sacramento Kings, and he wanted the you know,
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: the lead player development guys in the league.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: All right, so you said the top five rappers, I'm
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: gonna switch it. I'm gonna go top five l A
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: born ball players.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: LA born ball players that you guys know, No, just.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Anybody your your favorite, your favorite. Raymond Lewis I heard
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: him before.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: He's the street. He got a documentary coming out on Radon.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: He's a guy jumping over cars and all.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: That's Mitchell, that's Ivers Send me Steph Kurr.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: He never made it to college, made it to college.
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: He led the college with like he average forty three points,
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: went to cal State LA shot fifty nine percent from
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: the field.
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: Wow, wow, bro, that's like the shin guard.
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: It was like Steph carried me Iverson. He was, uh,
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: he's like this figure. Everybody in LA chase you know
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: what I mean, like our Earl Manigold or like how
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: to be we got yeah. Like but for us, it's like,
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: you know, all all our damage is done in high school,
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: like what you do in the gym.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: There's no street basketball out here.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: Broka ain't no street basketball. Like you got drive bars
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: and all that. Ain't nobody playing out. It don't make sense,
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: but you gotta like earn your stripes. And Raymond Lewis
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: went all the way to the league got black ball.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: So his story is about a dude.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: Who who you know, had this east Side mentality but
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: also was so great that he didn't he knew his
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: value and so at the time where the league, you know,
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: was not really respecting that.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: You just see like this guy in love for the game,
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: but like constantly getting knocked down, you know what I mean.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: Raymond Lewis number one, John Williams, number.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: Two, John like John Williams who played for the Cats.
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: John Williams played for Washington Wizards. Yeah.
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: They So he was like, you know, like all these
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: dudes are like huge figures, but I mean it's so
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: many dudes from l A bro Like if I if
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: I do this shit on this show, threat, Like that's
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: a lot of dudes I didn't see kind of lived under,
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: Like you know you live under this, Raymond Lewis. You
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: got Marcus, Marcus Johnson, you got you got to do
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Wayne Pole League. Uh, you know you got dudes like
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: Gumby right, you got Stage Bozman.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: You know, Paul Paul. Uh.
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: You know, if I were the name people that y'all
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: would know, it would probably be like Paul Paul George,
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Paul Pierce.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: Paul Englewood. He went to Paul George, England, England.
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: Kenny Bruner, I would say, Russell in high school are
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: now like.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: You guys that's James, Yeah, that's Bru. I mean those
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: are guys at eleven twelve to you.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: Darrell Right, he went pro out of high school the
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: first I made, the first dude out of Lady go
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: pro out of high school. That's what you get, Tyson
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: Chandlers right, I'm a botman. Copt what the Domingas mentioned?
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Dominga? What's the best high school? We was having this
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: conversation with like, I can't say.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: Didn't even say that, because you can say that gets
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: you to say Chrishaw, you can say, uh, Westchester.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: Everybody kind of like had their runs free minded, you know,
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: Westchester heard Westchester. We didn't say fair fact though Fairfax
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: got an argument like if you do all time teams
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: like do this, and.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: Like l A got a lot of basketball players, a
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: lot of double basketball players, dudes who played in the
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: league that you wouldn't even think played in l A.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: I think now you know, currently there's about fifty sixty
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: guys in the league from l A most.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: I think That's what I said. The New York l
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: A thing is not a competition right now. Professionally, it's not.
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: It's not cool. We got, we got, we got, Kimba
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: took a hit, you took a head. Yeah, it's been
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: a rough couple of yeah, yeah, yeah, we get. It
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: was the point God City, no point guard, that's not
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: even a question.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: It was a point on the city. And then now
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: we got I mean we got so yeah, I mean
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: I got, Hey, man, I do not fight that. Yeah,
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: our point Goud City a l A got some smokes.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: Point God, you got sham gun. We got skipped that.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Mark Jackson, Mark Jackson, Rod Strickland, Strickland, tiny ar Man nostalgic,
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: very nostalgic. Yeah, well we'll take that. Any What's what's
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: next for you?
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Any any other ventures that we didn't talk about that
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: you that you're working on that.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Man, Sports lifestyle and culture, so uh, you know, just
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: building out you know.
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: What I would call a platform for the culture for publishers, creators,
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: uh and people who want to create their ideas, you
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: know what I mean in the premium content short form
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: digital premium.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: Well there's documentaries.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: You know, We've been looking at the Patreons videos and
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: all these all these platforms and saying like, why why
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: can't you know, the culture kind of have its own platform,
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: you know why, you know, why shouldn't this be.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: Against a paywall where people can support?
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: Right, you guys are incredible content makers and creators and
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: have a great show. It's like where where can we
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: all as a community, right as an ecosystem, back ourselves
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: into a corner and say, hey, we have all the
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: tools we need and we can collaborate and you know,
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: create great content. So that's what slick is quick, Yeah,
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: it's creator app, have an n FT marketplace, and then
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: we'll have distribution like subscription distribution for publishers and.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: Creators, for any type of creator and.
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: Think more about think about it as being a production
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: company or creator and having like you're like getting approved.
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: So you just can't anybody just can't run in and
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: just be a party. Can't just run in and just
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: be like start creating a bunch of shit? Were good
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: on the platform? You were probably going to get the
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: tools and like do that. But you know, we we
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: we really want to do a good job of like
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: building out the library right, finding all the hidden gyms
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: and treasures and growing that way, and ain't giving.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Talent and access to like a library and tools and
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: shit like that to work, you know. So I want
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: to thank you before we wrap.
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: I want to thank you because March thirty first, twenty nineteen,
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: obviously we lost Nip and I had went to work
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: the next day. I don't forget, it was a Sunday.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: I went to the work next day. People really didn't
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: understand it. They didn't really understand what he meant. And
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: then I watched you on TNT speak about what he
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: meant to LA and what he meant to the community,
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: and that became the thing I sent out. I said,
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: watch this, that's when he meant to all of us.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: So I want to thank you for that that moment.
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: I appreciate it, Nip. I think Nip is like it's
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: just like man.
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: So it's like it was like, you know, like as
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: a key you see like Tupac in effect that Tupac
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: ad you know what I mean. And then like you're
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: like shit, dude, like if like there will never be
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: another something like that, you know what I mean. And
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: then like you actually like you're living with this dude,
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: you know what i mean, Like you living in this world,
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: and it's like, well, it ain't Tupac, you know what
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: I mean, ain't Tupac, but like a damn this like this.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: Motherfucker fill up a whole gym, you know what I mean.
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: It's like he fill up like he was. He was.
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: He was filled with so much, Like this guy has
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: so much to give, bro. He was so sharp, right,
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: and when you start you talk about consistency, right, you
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: talk about consistency. It's like the ship that he was
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: saying for when he started, you know what I mean,
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: to like the last thing he said.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: Was always consistent about like.
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: I'm taking this ship to a to a whole nother
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: level of like understanding and knowledge, and you know what
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: I'm saying. And so it's like this it was just
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: always dropping gifts. And it's like to live with that,
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: to live in the city with that presence, to run
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: up on him, you know what I mean, and be
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: able to like, you know, to say you had a
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: relationship with somebody who was just constantly like it was
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: like giving you something, you know what I mean, and
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: like where for and people don't really know, like to
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: be where he from in la you know what I mean.
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: And for everybody in the city to fuck with him
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: like that, man, that is that's power in itself, right
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: because he did. He he fucked with people for who
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: they were, you know what I mean, And like he
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: was able to transcend a lot of different layers that
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: people would tried to stereotype.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: Man, you know what I mean.
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: And I think that's why his legacy is going to
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: continue to live, right because it's like.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: You know, he is a Bros. Group from Concrete you feel.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, we were huge fans and it was we went
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: to his show in New York. That was the last
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: show he did in New York, and we went and
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: it was just a dope moment for us to see that,
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Because I never do concerts.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: He's a concert I never put. As soon as he
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: said He's coming to New York, I bought six tickets.
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: Then I called people, I got six's coming with me.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: You know what I'm because the victory like me, like
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: I look more into an artist and you can just
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: tell like he he struck me as somebody deep in
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: just a rapper. You know what I'm saying a lot
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: of people I just listened to music, but I like
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: his interviews more than his music.
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: Like you know what I'm saying. It's like he just
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: he gave me something.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Where it was like, so, yeah, kudos to you for
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: for doing that, because I wasn't sure, but he did.
