- 2:17And Speaking of spooky season, today we are here to talk about
- 2:23Cabin in the Woods with one of my very best pals, Jimmy
- 2:26Winslow. Hello.
- 2:27Hello. Hello, Molly.
- 2:29Hi, I love your Shall we call it sand?
- 2:34We can shirt. Yeah, No one would.
- 2:36No one would call this brown unless they were crazy.
- 2:39Unless they were colour blind, which if you are, we're allies,
- 2:42yeah. Although.
- 2:44Although. You can see Brown.
- 2:46Well. Or maybe not, I don't know.
- 2:48Maybe some people who are colour blind, they only see grey, so
- 2:51maybe they'd say it's a light grey, you know what I mean?
- 2:55Yeah. Or a dog if you would ask.
- 2:57Oh, a dog would. A dog would see it as light
- 2:59grey. That is true.
- 3:01But I bet they could sniff out that it's actually sand, you
- 3:03know? Yeah.
- 3:05Jimmy, how are you? I'm doing good, I can move in.
- 3:08It is already October. It is already October.
- 3:11Insane. It is insane considering I know
- 3:14that this is like the least interesting thing that I could
- 3:16say about October, but I rode my bike over here in my shorts and
- 3:19when I leave here I'm going to be riding my bike home in my
- 3:22shorts thinking, oh man, should have worn pants, you know what I
- 3:25mean? Yeah, yeah, it is hot though it.
- 3:28Was it is during the day? It's cool at night.
- 3:31Well. Are you a fall girly?
- 3:34I was technically born in the fall.
- 3:36I do love the fall. Technically, yes.
- 3:39Denver Fall. Yeah.
- 3:42Can mean hot, it can mean cold. Yeah, it's unpredictable, which
- 3:48I guess is exciting. Keeping us on our toes.
- 3:51We will very likely get our first snow at the end of this
- 3:54month. Yes.
- 3:55Well, down here at least. But, you know, I like the
- 3:59leaves. Yeah, that's fun.
- 4:01It's good running weather. Yeah.
- 4:03I just can't wear like slutty little shorts anymore.
- 4:06Except on Halloween night. Because we will do anything,
- 4:09actually, and I will what? Are you going to be for
- 4:11Halloween? I'm going to be a mailman.
- 4:15A little insider information for those who do not know Jimmy has
- 4:21professional experience as a mailman.
- 4:23Will not need to get a new costume.
- 4:25Yes, I am OK not to bring this up.
- 4:29You can immediately. Do it.
- 4:30Whatever it is, bring it up. I know that like Halloween is
- 4:34like the gay holiday. Sure.
- 4:39I can appreciate that and also it is so stressful every.
- 4:47Well, OK, it's because I'm a procrastinator.
- 4:49That's like actually what the. Problem is, yeah, this is
- 4:50actually. This actually has everything to
- 4:53do with you. Nothing to do with Halloween,
- 4:57although, OK, it is fast fashion and it's procrastination and I
- 5:01get a double whammy from that. Yeah, so I always end up
- 5:05throwing together costume last minute.
- 5:08And I know that because, well, because when you're, you know,
- 5:13you're my boy, but also because I can think off the top of my
- 5:16head right now of all of the costumes that I've seen you in
- 5:20the past like five years, and they're all like, they're all.
- 5:24So not really costumes is kind of what I'll say.
- 5:29But with the excitement and it, it's sort of the energy of I'm
- 5:35in a full get up. But if you were to just see a
- 5:40photo, you'd say looks like just a little man sitting in a living
- 5:47room. Yeah, I mean, I I genuinely
- 5:50cannot tell you what I was for Halloween in the last five
- 5:55years, except Alexis Rose from Schitt's Creek famously.
- 6:00OK. That was actually pretty good,
- 6:02but that was also kind of a last minute, right?
- 6:04Yeah, and it's like literally the only time I think I've since
- 6:08I was a literal child been like, this is what I'm going to be.
- 6:12I'm going to do this outfit on purpose to be this character.
- 6:16So this year is going to be different.
- 6:18Yeah, Because you told me weeks ago that you were going to be a
- 6:22mailman for for Halloween. Yeah, I decided very far in
- 6:26advance. You decided the first day that
- 6:28you signed up at USPS for a job You said I've got a Halloween
- 6:32costume for. Ever.
- 6:34Ever. Yeah, like you will be seeing me
- 6:38as a mailman every year for the rest of my life.
- 6:40Potentially. I love that.
- 6:43And that's OK and. And you know what?
- 6:45That is OK. People love a mailman.
- 6:48Look, and we know that for when you went viral on TikTok one
- 6:53time that one time. Yeah.
- 6:55Yeah, people were. I was just talking to someone
- 6:58about that the other day. They were like, oh, cuz of
- 7:02course, famously I have also gone viral on TikTok one time
- 7:05and, and they were like, oh, were people creepy to you?
- 7:10And I was like, not really. It wasn't like when my friend
- 7:13Jimmy made this wholesome video about how being a mailman is
- 7:17great because you know you don't have imposter syndrome, you
- 7:20don't have a lot of screen time, and they let you wear a cute
- 7:22little outfit and everyone was like fuck.
- 7:25Me, Jimmy. Yeah, it's a lot of men are
- 7:28creepy. Yeah, men are garbage.
- 7:30Like I do think for more than one reason, I will just say that
- 7:35men should maybe have a break from being on the Internet.
- 7:38You know what, I think that we should make men kind of like
- 7:40take a test, like an empathy test to see if they can have
- 7:47social media accounts. Because some can't handle it,
- 7:50no. No, no, no.
- 7:53OK, so obviously we know that you love Halloween, despite
- 7:56always throwing together a costume.
- 7:58How do you feel about horror? Movies.
- 7:59OK, I do love horror movies. This is the part of this month
- 8:03that I love. I will watch almost any scary
- 8:07movie just because I like the feeling.
- 8:12The rush is quite that. Controlled fear, I think, is a
- 8:16very appealing feeling. Yeah, I don't love gore.
- 8:22Yeah, necessarily. OK.
- 8:24The substance was crazy. That's like too far for me.
- 8:28The fact that you watch that on a date.
- 8:31I was deceased when you told me that.
- 8:34Yeah, without giving even more details, that makes that even
- 8:38crazier. Yeah.
- 8:39Absolutely. But yeah, I love a scary movie,
- 8:43especially if it's smart. And this one, Oh boy.
- 8:48It is I you're so. Smart.
- 8:50It's so flippin smart. I didn't realize, like, I don't
- 8:57know, the first time I watched Kevin in the Woods, Yeah.
- 9:00And I went in to a rewatch. I watched it like 2 days ago.
- 9:03Whatever. Being like, oh, I remember what
- 9:06happens. Like I've got it down.
- 9:09Like I didn't have strong feelings one way or another
- 9:11about like actually I remember being like, oh, there's like
- 9:14some unexpected things going on. I didn't realize.
- 9:18There's almost a sci-fi behind the curtains situation going on,
- 9:27which is very interesting, but it also feels very like cult
- 9:31kind of horror. Yes.
- 9:33And I didn't realize this until I was like doing my homework
- 9:36like a good little boy and. Thank you for that.
- 9:40Well, and that's why they call him the Scholar.
- 9:41Scholar. Yeah, God, I was going to like,
- 9:47OK, OK. The The thing is, Joss Whedon,
- 9:51yes. I don't know what the drama is.
- 9:54OK. He's problematic or something
- 9:57has been cancelled. I don't know what it is.
- 9:58Oh, really? Some may say that OK people who
- 10:03pay attention better than me. However, the person who directed
- 10:08it, which I guess Drew Goddard, Yep, he did some stuff for
- 10:14Buffy. Yeah, he the the two of them
- 10:17worked together on Buffy created it, actually.
- 10:20Yeah, and I feel like that element shines through.
- 10:23Oh my gosh, it's so Buffy. Like, it's very playful.
- 10:28It's very like, yeah, we're technically doing a horror
- 10:31movie, but there's almost kind of like a theatrical and like a
- 10:37literal theatre, like, play kind of sense to like how everything
- 10:41pieces together on purpose. Yeah.
- 10:44Like, it's this is not a slasher.
- 10:46Not really. Yeah, it kind of.
- 10:49I guess it's doing like a reference to everything.
- 10:51Yeah, it's really, I think what this movie does really well,
- 10:56what Happened in the Woods does really well, is it's both an
- 11:00homage and a satire. Like I think that it does a
- 11:04great job of giving homage to movies like, I don't know, like
- 11:11Evil Dead and like every zombie movie, like especially 28 Days
- 11:15Later, but like Hellraiser, the Mummy it we've got clowns, we've
- 11:21got that like creepy little family, The Texas Chainsaw
- 11:24Massacre, very Friday the 13th, very Halloween.
- 11:29But it also and it's like, you know, sort of giving a nice nod
- 11:34to those films and sort of bringing this entertainment
- 11:38value by giving nod to those films.
- 11:41But also is very clearly a criticism of some of the more I
- 11:47don't know, like torture porn type movies, the ones that are
- 11:50really just like creepy basement, like Saw, hostile, the
- 11:55weird little family from Hills Have Eyes, you know?
- 12:00Don't. It's bad.
- 12:03In my opinion, I think that movie is really bad.
- 12:08So, yeah, movies like that that were like especially punishing
- 12:11to women, like during during the like mid aughts was when those
- 12:18types of movies started to become really popular.
- 12:21And a lot of the more classic slashers and what I would
- 12:25consider to be more entertaining horror films were not really not
- 12:30really on the scene as much. So I think that they did a good
- 12:33job of like bringing in those elements that are really
- 12:36entertaining and giving this, I don't know, this like,
- 12:40revitalization to the genre while also being like, isn't it
- 12:46silly? We're kind of making fun of
- 12:48ourselves and directly criticizing these like torture
- 12:54porn movies, you know what I mean?
- 12:56Well, and then there's like kind of that weird element to because
- 13:01the movie's so self aware with all the references, but you end
- 13:06up with this thing like, I think the sci-fi thing, like the
- 13:08background of all the guys in the suits watching them, almost
- 13:12like they're the audience watching the same movie we are.
- 13:15Yeah, obviously they're in it, especially at the end, in a very
- 13:20different way. But like you, you get the idea
- 13:23that, like, what we're spectating is the history of
- 13:30horror movies, and they're getting off literally, like even
- 13:33on the choices that they're going to make in real time
- 13:37leading down one of the baddest of those other movies.
- 13:41Right. It's like in order to explain
- 13:44why horror movies have these tropes, they created this entire
- 13:48sci-fi scaffolding to be like, these tropes are so silly.
- 13:54It's as though there were little engineers behind a Control Board
- 13:59making people make all these stupid decisions, and that's
- 14:03like, so freaking funny. Yeah, Yeah, it is.
- 14:08OK, So I guess if we start right off at the very beginning, let's
- 14:12start the characters were it kind of gets off to a fast
- 14:16start. Yeah, we're moving, We're
- 14:19moving. We've got Gary and Steve, played
- 14:22by Bradley Whitford, who I love, West Wing.
- 14:25What West Wing? West Wing, he's he like has
- 14:29really aged well too, I would say.
- 14:31I I would have to agree. Who?
- 14:36Yeah, he's, he's a forever hot in my mind.
- 14:41So they're, so they're preparing for this mission.
- 14:43They've got to do it every year. And they're the only ones who
- 14:46are still in the running to complete the mission other than
- 14:49Japan. And they're like, OK, we got to,
- 14:52we got to complete the mission. It's all very mysterious in the
- 14:54beginning. And then we go right to this
- 14:57college campus. This girl, Dana is just in her
- 15:01underwear and we don't really know why.
- 15:03And OK, this is, like, the first moment this movie is so much
- 15:07smarter than I gave it credit for.
- 15:08Yeah, like, right off the bat, we have, like, the setup, like,
- 15:13a typical jock, whatever. All these, like, tropes that you
- 15:17end up in. Like especially the kind of
- 15:20slashers where it's like innocent girl.
- 15:23Yep, the version, the athlete, the horror, the scholar, and the
- 15:27fool are the five archetypes. Right.
- 15:30Oh, I wonder also. Oh no, I was going to say if the
- 15:33order that we see them in is also like the order that like
- 15:37events play out with it, but it's not.
- 15:38That's not. But we do get this weird thing
- 15:40where once you see the movie and you see the like which ones are
- 15:45assigned to which roles, you can very easily see how quickly it's
- 15:50proven false that any one of them can fit in any one of those
- 15:53category. Yes, like they need to they need
- 15:56to make the whore a whore by being like, oh, we're going to
- 16:03pump this room with pheromones so that she takes off her
- 16:06clothes right and the virgin isn't actually a virgin right.
- 16:11They they make the jock kind of dumb by like pumping the air
- 16:16full of gas, right? Like they they have to engineer
- 16:22all of these kids to fit into the archetypes that they set up
- 16:26for them, which automatically like proves them to be not like
- 16:31not fully accurate. I thought that was so fun.
- 16:35There is also like a weird kind of strange.
- 16:37I don't know if it's a pothole or if it's like kind of the
- 16:39point to make fun of the mythology of it too.
- 16:41But the the whole premise of the movie being there's some kind of
- 16:45like supernatural rule about like fundamental components of a
- 16:52person that have to be like sacrifice.
- 16:54Yeah. And then they like very quickly
- 16:57are like, except this doesn't exist, right.
- 17:00So like, why are we going to all the effort to like a make
- 17:02everything actually engineered? For the for the subterranean
- 17:07gods, right? Obviously.
- 17:10It's like we're in this. It's like they've created this
- 17:14cinematic universe that every horror movie lives within,
- 17:18right? And that's so fun.
- 17:21Also, I did realize too, it's almost given Breakfast Club.
- 17:27Like it's not I guess exactly A1 to 1, but you have.
- 17:31Oh God. Not that I know any of those
- 17:33actors names, but like you have the nerd in both, like Nerd
- 17:37scholar. Yeah, you have jock in both.
- 17:41Yeah, you have. The Virgin.
- 17:43The Virgin in both like the Molly Ringwald, I guess the like
- 17:47the. Then the other two don't really
- 17:49fit but. Fool I guess is kind of like the
- 17:52rule breaker guy. Yeah, and then the other girl is
- 17:56just kind of a freak. Yeah.
- 17:58Yeah. So, but it is similar in that
- 18:00like the the setup of the movie is that there are these five
- 18:06archetypes. And then like as we go through
- 18:08the film, we discover that there's a lot more beneath the
- 18:11surface. But in order to make the
- 18:15structure work, whether that structure is high school social
- 18:19systems, whether that structure is like horror movie, we have to
- 18:23put people into these categories that may not fully capture who
- 18:26they are. Well make the OK so the virgins
- 18:29in her underwear in the first scene talking about how she has
- 18:32been sleeping with her teacher. Yeah, I forgot.
- 18:35That so we're we're saying hi, virgin.
- 18:37Yeah, like hot in your underwear, talking about
- 18:40sleeping with your married professor, whatever.
- 18:43And then the the whore is just sorry to this girl.
- 18:51Just a girl with short Hollister shorts.
- 18:54Right. And but then then we immediately
- 18:56like finally she's like pre Med or something.
- 18:58So it's like, OK, she's just a whore because she's I guess dyed
- 19:01her hair blonde and is hot. So like, oh, I guess that's how
- 19:06you're settled. But then we get Chris Hemsworth,
- 19:11and he's supposed to be like the jock, whatever, right?
- 19:15But he throws a football, misses, goes right out of the
- 19:18window into the scholar's hands, right?
- 19:21Like. And the fool.
- 19:23The smartest of them all, Yeah. Yeah, so like immediately set up
- 19:28all of these stereotypes, immediately break all of them,
- 19:30Yes, in like they are not messing around with the
- 19:34timeline. Yeah, and it's fun because you
- 19:37don't have to see a lot of horror movies to know what a
- 19:40horror movie trope is like, you know, that that like they're
- 19:46they got to keep the virgin alive and they got to kill the
- 19:48whore first. You know that they're going to
- 19:51have a weird remote place in the middle of nowhere that's kind of
- 19:55creepy. And there's going to be a creepy
- 19:56basement, like, you know, these things going into it.
- 20:00So when they start to, when they start to reveal what's going to
- 20:04happen next? We're already sort of cheering
- 20:08for the next thing to happen because we know that that's
- 20:10what's going to happen. Yeah.
- 20:12And we, and we think we've seen the script before, Yeah.
- 20:15And I guess in a lot of ways we have, yeah.
- 20:17Until maybe the final act and everything.
- 20:19It's like absolutely unhinged. Yeah.
- 20:23But yeah, it's I find it very refreshing that we get to be a
- 20:30little bit in on the joke of how stupid it is.
- 20:34Yeah, So they, oh, also wait, this, I don't know how on
- 20:39purpose this is. We do get the fool driving with
- 20:42the bong, right? He makes sure to lock his door
- 20:48and leaves the window rolled down, right.
- 20:50So we're we're getting these things where it's like, even
- 20:53even though he's smart and he like can't figure shit out
- 20:55later, he is very scatterbrained.
- 20:58Obviously, Yeah, which is like, OK, so there is a little bit of
- 21:02fool. There's a little bit of fool.
- 21:04They aren't so removed from their archetype that they're
- 21:08that it's like completely unbelievable that they would be
- 21:11fit into that category. We can see how the engineers
- 21:14would be like close enough and then fudge the details.
- 21:17Right, yeah. And OK, this part's unclear to
- 21:19me. So we get moving forward like so
- 21:22we're on our way to a cabin with a cousin that maybe does not
- 21:25exist. Yeah, exactly.
- 21:29Which like, OK, I'll forgive that because like we're, we're
- 21:32moving. We're moving.
- 21:32Again, it's like we're living in this horror movie cinematic
- 21:36universe where it doesn't matter if the cousin is real or not,
- 21:40you know? It just seems they really go out
- 21:44of their way, like the people, the puppeteers, to really mess
- 21:49with these kids lives way in advance.
- 21:51Yeah, like. Because this is an annual
- 21:54sacrifice they had all year to prepare.
- 21:56Totally. It's a Christmas.
- 21:57This is like Santa. This is Santa.
- 21:59Yeah, and all the little elves. Exactly.
- 22:03So we get like this even like the guy at the gas station,
- 22:06right? We see he's like this like
- 22:07Confederate flag in the so funny.
- 22:09When he says I was in the war and he says which war?
- 22:11Yeah, Brother, brother fighting brother.
- 22:14Blue versus Gray. So funny.
- 22:16Yeah, It's like a little joke. Like it's really, really funny.
- 22:18Fool's a little sharp. Yeah, he's sharp.
- 22:20And very defensive of the girls, which like actually is a through
- 22:24line that thank. God.
- 22:26Yeah, he's like actually doing the Lord's work, frankly.
- 22:30Frankly, ironically. I loved him.
- 22:32He was my favorite. I think he's supposed to be our
- 22:34favorite, right? Probably, yeah.
- 22:36I mean, he's he's almost a hero. Us, the viewer.
- 22:39Yeah. But even the the part about the
- 22:41gas station thing that I like too is right after they leave.
- 22:45So like they're getting gas, whatever he the foreshadowings,
- 22:49of course, off the rails the whole time.
- 22:50Of course, he's like, you have enough gas to get there not to
- 22:53leave. And they're just like, OK,
- 22:56sounds fine to me. But then he also calls in to
- 23:02like whatever the I don't know what we want to call this
- 23:04organization. We can call it the facility.
- 23:06That's what they call it. OK, yeah, so he calls into the
- 23:09facility and even he's doing a character.
- 23:12Yeah, that was so funny. And they're like a roasting him,
- 23:15even though he comes across as very scary.
- 23:17Like that's of all of the things in this movie that are actually
- 23:21scary in real life. People like that are the real
- 23:25threat that could actually exist.
- 23:27Oh yeah. And then you find out he's like
- 23:30doing a play, basically. He's like saying his lines.
- 23:34Yeah, which is a bit weird. He's kind of method you could
- 23:39say because he can't really dropped, he can't really drop
- 23:42the ACT even when he's talking to right the engineers, but it
- 23:48is an act. Totally.
- 23:50Yeah, Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 23:52So then we see the force field more foreshadowing the hawk.
- 23:56Was in the right? Yep, Yep.
- 23:57Like we're really getting sci-fi and foreshadowing really leading
- 24:02up to it. Oh yeah.
- 24:04One other thing that I want to say about just the the beginning
- 24:07of the film is that the outfits are so on point with the times
- 24:15it was made. So the movie was actually
- 24:17supposed to come out in 2009, but MGM was having financial
- 24:20problems so it didn't end up getting released until 2011 when
- 24:23Lionsgate bought it. But the outfits are so 2009
- 24:31through 2011 code. We got the ballet flats, we got
- 24:36the side bangs, we've got the low rise Capri pants, business
- 24:40casual blouse. We've got the tiny Hollister
- 24:43shorts. Like, I can't really remember
- 24:46well enough if some of those trends and some of the tech like
- 24:51the iPod mini or iPod nano in the ihome remember.
- 24:55Like, I don't know if those things were already a little bit
- 24:57outdated by the time that it was actually released in 2011, but
- 25:01I'm pretty sure it was close enough.
- 25:03Anyway, those things really, really brought me back.
- 25:09It it does, even though they're like college students, it does
- 25:15just feel like generic. Everyone was doing that at the
- 25:19time, right? Like it's a little before our
- 25:23time, I guess. Yeah.
- 25:24'Cause we were 'cause we were in high school, right?
- 25:27Yeah. But yeah, they felt completely
- 25:30relatable. Yeah.
- 25:33As the. Wheeler those clothes I would
- 25:35have that that would have been my my outfit, kind of a kind of
- 25:39a a blouse, low rise Capri pants, ballet flats, side bangs.
- 25:46The pictures of you from mortified, I know not that far
- 25:48off not. That far off we all remember the
- 25:50side bangs we do. And OK, wait, the thing about
- 25:54glasses. Let's talk about.
- 25:55It so he put Oh my gosh, what's his name?
- 25:58This is why I have to take notes.
- 26:02Jesse Williams So. Holden who?
- 26:04Hottie. He's so hot, and it's like, of
- 26:07course he's gonna be hot and a scholar.
- 26:09Duh. Right, because they're all gonna
- 26:10be hot. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:12But I like how they're like, oh, we have to put him in glasses,
- 26:14like maybe so he's not like, too hot.
- 26:17They have to put him in glasses so that they're like, Oh yeah,
- 26:19that's why he's the scholar. Yeah, I'm like which is.
- 26:22The other part that it's so funny, it's so on purpose that
- 26:25they're like, we're going to take this guy who's just kind of
- 26:27conventional beefcake. We're going to put him in
- 26:30glasses, call him a scholar. Yeah.
- 26:33And then we get like, so Chris Hemsworth, I guess.
- 26:38So when it comes out he he would have been in Thor, but he would
- 26:44have filmed this I guess before. So we get kind of like a fresh,
- 26:51but he's he's a little bit younger, skinnier, but they're
- 26:55still like, OK, we're putting you in the Letterman jacket.
- 26:58He's kind of the authority figure in the group, almost like
- 27:01maybe just by nature of like. I think that it's like because
- 27:06they forgot to give him some of the dumbed down gas for a little
- 27:09bit. Remember when he's like, we all
- 27:11have to stay together and then they're like, no, no, no, no.
- 27:16Also the the technology, it's so wild to me like that the mix of
- 27:22the magic and the technology at the same time, but like the fact
- 27:25they have like a chemistry team, a demolition team or whatever,
- 27:29like all of these like very, very elite like technology that
- 27:34we still right now probably don't have.
- 27:37Hopefully not well. Well, not that we know of, but
- 27:41they they really do turn on like the like the even you find out
- 27:45like the the blonde hair dye, I guess, Yeah.
- 27:50Is what's making her dumb. Yeah, which love that.
- 27:53So funny. We're dumb blonde jokes still.
- 27:57Yes. OK.
- 27:57Yeah, at the time. Oh yeah.
- 27:59Very much, very much in the zeitgeist.
- 28:01Yeah. OK, so wait, they get to the
- 28:04cabin. We're immediately doing like the
- 28:07are the Airbnb thing where everyone's like, oh, I want my
- 28:11room. Yeah.
- 28:12And it's immediately creepy. Of course.
- 28:14I don't know how they're not seeing what we are seeing.
- 28:18Again, because they are being engineered to fit into this
- 28:23premise that's like that a normal person would never be
- 28:29like, Oh yeah, this seems totally normal and good.
- 28:32Yeah, it's. Yeah.
- 28:33Like we get the painting is first scary thing to me.
- 28:36Yeah. And then we get like the weird,
- 28:41almost like the like the feeling that like Barbarian had to where
- 28:45it's like it doesn't feel like we're the only ones in this
- 28:47house. Yes, we're not alone in this
- 28:50house. Right.
- 28:52And then I think even OK, so we get whatever like the little
- 28:54moment with the see through. Oh, the two way mirror.
- 28:58Yeah, which I guess is like the, the, the point there is what,
- 29:03like he's a good guy. Holden's like, I could look at
- 29:07her naked, I could look at the virgin.
- 29:08Yeah, that part that's like really one of the only parts
- 29:10that like doesn't make sense to me because it's not like the two
- 29:16way mirror was there to show that this house was used for
- 29:20torture that was in the basement.
- 29:21They had the like the dark room or whatever this two way mirror
- 29:25thing was just to establish that these characters are like, I
- 29:29don't know that they're interested in each other, that
- 29:31they're like sexually attracted to each other, but also they're
- 29:34not going to like look at each other naked without their
- 29:37consent. I don't know that whole thing.
- 29:39Like I didn't understand why it was there even.
- 29:44Like both from perspective of the engineers and also from the
- 29:49perspective of like the film makers.
- 29:52Like the meta commentary. I'm like why is there a two way
- 29:54mirror? What does this mean?
- 29:55I I do wonder if they were trying to establish some kind of
- 29:58like necessity for the sacrifices to be like moral or
- 30:03like maybe they were supposed to not.
- 30:04Be. Maybe so it's supposed to be
- 30:06like they if they deserve it, we don't like feel bad for them if
- 30:10they're like shitty people or something.
- 30:13But I will say actually the one funny moment is OK, we find out
- 30:17it's a two way mirror. OK, she's about to be naked.
- 30:20Yes, he says no, let's swap rooms.
- 30:22What does he immediately do? Get in front of the mirror,
- 30:25takes off his. Look, I mean, if you looked like
- 30:28that, wouldn't you be taking off your?
- 30:29Clothes. I mean, I do it anyway, you'd
- 30:31say. You'd say look through this
- 30:34mirror. Yeah, but that it's.
- 30:35Like all in. Yeah, it's like, OK, so you
- 30:38we're just showing our each other our naked bodies, knowing
- 30:42that that's what we're doing now.
- 30:43Oh, for sure. Like OK.
- 30:48Yeah. And then, OK, and then the lake
- 30:51is kind of a weird element. I guess it's a little bit of
- 30:53like a, we're going to come back to this later in like a four
- 30:56trope kind of a setup way. Totally.
- 31:00Water is like very mysterious, dark, creepy.
- 31:03I guess we get the payoff for them not wanting to get in the
- 31:06water earlier. And then she does, she ends up
- 31:09in the water when she almost dies.
- 31:11And then. And then that guy gets killed by
- 31:13merman. That was funny.
- 31:15You bet on him. That thing is gross.
- 31:17That was really gross. Wait, OK, there's something I
- 31:22Frick. I was just going to say when we
- 31:24were talking about the lake. Dang it, Jimmy.
- 31:29Well, it'll it'll come back to you.
- 31:31It will come back to me. I know that.
- 31:33I know. One thing's for sure is that
- 31:35it's going to come back to. Me it will.
- 31:36It's all coming back to me. Oh, my God, I remember what I
- 31:40was going to say. It actually had nothing to do
- 31:42with the lake. Oh, my God.
- 31:43OK, so we were set up with this premise of the five archetypes,
- 31:48right? And they have to die in a
- 31:49certain order. What does that mean for the
- 31:52Japanese schoolchildren? Remember, that entire setup in
- 31:58Japan was just like school children.
- 32:02Yeah, I don't know that they fully make that clear.
- 32:07That was one part that, you know, even in the the universe
- 32:12of this movie, I was like, wait, but.
- 32:16Why are they all like if we have to be the tropes?
- 32:19Yeah, if it has to be the tropes in order to satisfy the the gods
- 32:24then then what are you going to say?
- 32:28That this 8 year old is a whore. Yeah, I know.
- 32:30Excuse me. I mean, did you see her hair?
- 32:32No. Yeah, that that part's a bit.
- 32:36Maybe there's different rules. Yeah, in different.
- 32:39Different countries, different cultures.
- 32:41Right. Although actually that would
- 32:44that would work because there are different horror tropes in
- 32:48Japanese horror than there are in American Horror movies.
- 32:51This idea of like the the virgin and the horror in slashers is so
- 32:56American. From my understanding.
- 32:59I'm not a horror movie scholar. Professor, Professor Andy is
- 33:03listening to this and he's saying, no, no, no, there.
- 33:06It actually originated in this country and this year, blah,
- 33:08blah, blah. Anyway, I think from my
- 33:12perspective, from what I know, it's a very American trope.
- 33:16Japanese horror movies are incredible and also don't really
- 33:21follow the same conventions as American Horror movies.
- 33:24To that to that point, I do think one of the biggest things
- 33:28the film's trying to say is that America, our culture is set up
- 33:35in this way that is very like commoditized.
- 33:39Like I don't know if they're meant to say like we're stealing
- 33:44stuff from other cultures too, like with all the monsters we
- 33:46have, because some of those feel like Japanese horror troops,
- 33:49like in the actual monster selection.
- 33:54But we we do get the idea right, that like in America, we're
- 33:58doing sports betting on people getting ritually sacrificed.
- 34:01And it's like we're going back and forth with like this very
- 34:04weird discomfort of like, it's weird.
- 34:08These people are like so glib about the fact that like literal
- 34:11children or, or whatever, I guess 18 year old, barely,
- 34:15they're children to us. They're getting killed.
- 34:19And it's like casual and like a sport kind of stuff.
- 34:25And like in Japan, that's like, not how it goes.
- 34:29Right. Yeah, it's interesting.
- 34:31It's like there is a little bit of this moral question that they
- 34:37pose to us of like, but what if it saved the rest of the world?
- 34:41Like it's very, it's like a, it's like the, the fucking,
- 34:44what's it called? The trolley?
- 34:46Oh. God, actually, yeah, I mean very
- 34:49much the trolley. And it's sort of like, Oh my
- 34:52God, when we get Sigourney Weaver, God bless.
- 34:55Icon. Moment of silence for the
- 34:57goodness of Sigourney Weaver. OK, she's the director and it's
- 35:02like. Is she really?
- 35:04What of the thing of the thing? That's her character's name as
- 35:07the director. She's the, you know, she's the
- 35:10director. And it's sort of like, are we
- 35:13the directors? Are we the engineers?
- 35:16Are we the ones that are watching these horror films?
- 35:19Like with this, I don't know, this glib attitude of like, oh,
- 35:24yeah, people are going to die because it's entertaining and we
- 35:26have to do it. We just have to, you know.
- 35:30It's it's dark. I think that's like the darkest
- 35:32thing about the. Yeah.
- 35:34Movie. But also, horror movies do not
- 35:38like, it's not like we're truly sacrificing these characters in
- 35:42order to protect the rest of the world, you know, not in reality.
- 35:50But are we treating it like that?
- 35:51Are we treating it like, well, this is something we have to do,
- 35:54We just have to kill off these kids and we have to watch and
- 35:57bet on it? They don't have to bet on it.
- 36:01They don't have to. They're not Zac Efron.
- 36:03Bet on it. Oh yeah.
- 36:05God, I cannot. I'm not singing on a microphone.
- 36:08Don't make me. Sing, don't make me, he said.
- 36:12It's musical theater time, yeah. OK I will say so after lake.
- 36:17OK Lakes are spooky to me. I do not like water content.
- 36:21In a movie. Well, yeah.
- 36:23Do you like to swim in a lake normally?
- 36:26Yes, but part of my brain does look out for the merman at all
- 36:31times. Yes, yes, yes.
- 36:33Remember when he's like, Oh yeah, like the fish are going to
- 36:36get you or like, there's no fish, right?
- 36:39Yeah. Well, and she doesn't want to
- 36:41get in. She's like, yeah, I'm going to
- 36:42like, like Tan. She's like, yeah, it's dangerous
- 36:46enough to just tan. That's the way that I'll do.
- 36:48It and also I think it's cloudy, so it's it is like a very stupid
- 36:52like. That was the hair dye talking,
- 36:54yeah. Yeah.
- 36:55Well, but OK, then I will say like's a little spooky.
- 37:00They could have leaned in a little harder maybe if they
- 37:01wanted to with like the music or whatever.
- 37:03Don't really. I think it starts getting
- 37:06spooky. Obviously the truth or dare.
- 37:09It's night time. It's night time when they start
- 37:11playing truth or dare, and that's when it gets creepy.
- 37:14Wait, can I ask you? Yes.
- 37:15What do you say when posed with the question of truth or dare?
- 37:19Do you? Do you choose truth or do you
- 37:20choose dare? It's so depends what I'm with.
- 37:23Oh my God. OK.
- 37:26Men will make you do crazy things if you choose dare.
- 37:29Yeah, don't. Don't you dare choose dare in
- 37:34the company of men. It it's more fun to do the game
- 37:38that way, right? When when you play truth or dare
- 37:40and everyone's speaking truth it, it becomes like a weird
- 37:43therapy. Yeah.
- 37:45Or not therapy, but it's like. It's like a weird like.
- 37:47What's the worst thing you've ever done?
- 37:49What's the weirdest place you ever did it?
- 37:50Yeah, it's like, OK. Yeah.
- 37:53It's like, OK, now we're just like sharing random, Yeah.
- 37:58Story. Now we're.
- 37:59Just I guess, yeah. OK.
- 38:00And now you're getting attention.
- 38:02Good for. You it's two game, it's two
- 38:04separate games and they're like smashed.
- 38:06Together, that is. That's a big thing to say.
- 38:09And honestly, you just blew my mind.
- 38:12Truth or Dare is truly two different games.
- 38:16Wow. But you have to pose it as a
- 38:19question because if you're like, let's just play dare, then it's
- 38:22like, OK, well, I dare you to do this.
- 38:24Like there's no, there's no anticipation of like, what's she
- 38:28going to choose? Well, and I guess that's what
- 38:30Chris Hemsworth almost actually makes this exact same point
- 38:37because he's like, OK, so first of all, Wolf make out first
- 38:40scary moment to me because you think it's going to do
- 38:43something? Yeah, Like, yeah, on the wall.
- 38:47You think it's going to? Yeah, when the eyes, it feels
- 38:50like the eyes are about to move at any moment.
- 38:52Oh yeah, that's taxidermy, babe. That's.
- 38:55Don't like it? That's how it all.
- 38:57That's how it would be in a freaky cabin in the woods.
- 39:00If there was a taxidermy wolf on the wall, it would be.
- 39:03Or a moose as as a Stoner might say.
- 39:07Yeah. But then, yeah, we get like the
- 39:13Chris Hemsworth's basically saying like, oh, you're of
- 39:15course going to make truth. You're the virgin, You're the
- 39:18prude. You're boring.
- 39:19Yeah, you, you are not like, you can't possibly do something
- 39:23interesting, right? And of course, she's like, OK,
- 39:27fine. Which is like, so predictable.
- 39:30Of course. Like it.
- 39:30She plays like right into his hands.
- 39:33Right. And then the trap door just on a
- 39:36we're on a now. Now we're just incredible.
- 39:38We're go it. Started.
- 39:39It's on. It's night time.
- 39:41Halloween started. It's October 1st.
- 39:44Yes, we're going into the scary basement.
- 39:46Yes, alone in the dark. Yeah.
- 39:51And then we're off to the races. Oh yeah, and then we're picking
- 39:54up every single creepy thing. They got the dolls, they got the
- 39:58little music boxes, they got the creepy diary.
- 40:01And she says. The Latin phrase to unlock.
- 40:05You just never say the Latin. Do they explain so we have the
- 40:10thing the fool is hearing voices?
- 40:13Yeah. Do we?
- 40:15Is there a speaker? Are we doing subliminal
- 40:18messaging? Actually, don't.
- 40:19I think that there is. I think that it's like, I think
- 40:23that it we're meant to believe that that's what's happening,
- 40:25OK. Yeah, because he's very much
- 40:28like, as the viewer, you know, too.
- 40:31And he seems getting worse. Seeing where it's like, this is
- 40:34a very bad idea. I've seen a horror movie before.
- 40:37Right. Like we should not be reading
- 40:40the Latin in the scary book in the basement, right?
- 40:43And of course. She doesn't.
- 40:45She does it, Yeah, stupid virgin.
- 40:48Like let the black thing handle or the hocus pocus.
- 40:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. Does the thing.
- 40:54I will say this part of the movie it's they start making
- 41:00very strong choices at this point because there's so many
- 41:06options available to them. I do find it interesting to pick
- 41:10like a very hectic, cluttered basement with a billion options
- 41:16to die. Well, that's what makes the bet
- 41:19so exciting. Yeah.
- 41:21And I guess it's a free will thing.
- 41:23And they're really saying there's like there's not three
- 41:25choices of which way you're going to die.
- 41:27There's a countless number. We saw all the different little
- 41:32elevator pods that came out. I mean, there were dozens and
- 41:35dozens and dozens of little monsters that they could have
- 41:38summoned. Yeah.
- 41:39I do think the scale is maybe worth rethinking if they were
- 41:43going to do like a a bit of a, yeah, a revamp.
- 41:46But the scale of it is what is so funny because like, that's
- 41:52when that's when it becomes truly to me, like horror comedy,
- 41:56when they just unleash all of the monsters.
- 41:59It's like they they opened, they opened the gates to the zoo,
- 42:03they let all of the monsters out of the cages and it is just
- 42:10hilarious chaos. So I think that they needed that
- 42:13over the top. I don't know nature of it, but
- 42:17it's not, it's not over the top in the way that like Scary Movie
- 42:21is over the top. It's not like a dumb satire.
- 42:23I think. I think that that's the
- 42:24difference is that this is a smart satire that actually
- 42:28appreciates horror. Scary Movie is like a dumb
- 42:33satire. I I feel like this is more
- 42:36Scream as the happy medium where it's like in Scream they're also
- 42:41self aware of like what the danger is at any given time.
- 42:48They they've all like, seen the movie they're in.
- 42:50Right. There's always that explicit
- 42:52meta commentary where it's like, you've seen a scary movie,
- 42:55right? Yeah, and we we get that here,
- 42:58which I guess works, but it it becomes, I do feel like this is
- 43:05like we're hitting Act 2 at the moment.
- 43:09It's like it's all of a sudden it's OK.
- 43:11Now we're doing a mini section of the movie where we're in like
- 43:16a horror movie for real, right? We have the zombie family coming
- 43:21at us with a the. Zombie torture family, It's so
- 43:24funny. Bear trap.
- 43:25Yeah. And a saw and a knife.
- 43:28It's almost like Addams Family kind of a thing.
- 43:31It's very like, it is actually very Hills Have Eyes.
- 43:36Like in Hills Have Eyes, it's like this.
- 43:40It's like this, Yeah. Like, literally like a creepy
- 43:42zombie torture family. Like they're a little family of
- 43:46monsters that are just creepy. That's it.
- 43:51And then there was there's also the weird element too, that like
- 43:54breaks, like the the fact that the zombies are a supernatural
- 44:01threat and they're coming out of a bunker and like a highly
- 44:05engineered combat. It's it's almost like we've like
- 44:09seen the characters but get put into like a giant snow globe.
- 44:12Yeah, like literally with I guess the force field.
- 44:15Snow Globe is a great way to describe this movie.
- 44:17And then they get to watch. Yeah.
- 44:20Like they have absolute control over every square inch of the
- 44:25entire setting. Yeah, it made me kind of like, I
- 44:29thought it was so cathartic when they let all of the monsters out
- 44:32of their little pods because it's like, you know, a monster
- 44:36in a pod that doesn't get to do any killing.
- 44:39What a lonely little life you know.
- 44:41And you almost get message, jump forward, there's the one.
- 44:45So Chris Hemsworth almost picks whatever that little ball puzzle
- 44:50is. Oh yeah, the Hellraiser thing.
- 44:52Like the little puzzle? Yeah, and that guy does seem
- 44:55sad. Genuinely, Yeah.
- 44:58Sad, sad pinhead guy. He's like so bummed that they
- 45:03didn't pick him. He's like, oh man.
- 45:06But it also seems like he's like one of the ones that's like,
- 45:10doesn't feel interested in like doing like, a lot of them are
- 45:14animals, I guess the family's like.
- 45:17Zombies. Yeah, and it's they're in on the
- 45:22wanting to kill actively like. It's every, I think that like
- 45:30all of the creatures are, it's like in their nature to kill.
- 45:34It doesn't, it doesn't matter which one they pick, the
- 45:37outcome's gonna be the same. And I think that's another
- 45:40commentary on like, you know, horror movies is that like, it
- 45:44doesn't matter what the monster is, the the end result is going
- 45:49to be the same that like the whore is going to die first and
- 45:51the virgin's going to either live or die.
- 45:54But we'll be the last one, you know.
- 45:58I do like they mess with the recipe too.
- 46:00Like, again, they're trying to subvert the expectation.
- 46:03We're like the whore and the jock, the athlete are like out
- 46:08in the woods and he's like, oh, let's do it.
- 46:10And she's like, no, we're like kind of in public.
- 46:13It's right. She's like, I'm chilly.
- 46:15And then they again, because she's not actually a whore, they
- 46:19have to like turn the temperature up, release these
- 46:23pheromones that make her feel like, I don't know, they like
- 46:28they like make them horny and fuck with the temperature.
- 46:32Right. And I also just want to say for
- 46:34the listener that we don't actually call people whores
- 46:37except in in love and in just right.
- 46:41We are speaking a huge compliment, always.
- 46:46Every time. In this context, we are simply
- 46:50working with the names and labels that they have given us.
- 46:53Yeah, so and if you. If you dye your hair blonde,
- 46:56you're asking for it, frankly. Oh my God, that's so true.
- 46:58I've always said that. And you've always said that to
- 47:00me. Yeah.
- 47:01Yeah, anyone who dyes their hair.
- 47:03And not even just blonde. Honestly, really any any
- 47:07colours. Really.
- 47:07Come get it boys. Or whoever.
- 47:10Or and thank you for saying that in this case.
- 47:15She's saying come get it, Chris. Yeah, again, it's so funny
- 47:19because like, even for, I mean, yeah, in 2009 standards, any
- 47:25woman was a whore if she dared to, like, show a little leg.
- 47:32Or belly button God. Forbid, oh, God forbid, but this
- 47:35is a girl who is in a monogamous relationship.
- 47:40She is. She's not sleeping around.
- 47:44No. She's not love him, they are in
- 47:46love. Like.
- 47:48Yeah. They're good people, honestly,
- 47:52as far as I can tell. Yeah, like.
- 47:54Even even in the even for the scale of like what is a whore in
- 47:582009? Like she doesn't fit it.
- 48:00No, yeah. Like we we're literally even 0
- 48:02evidence to believe that that's anything except she's hot.
- 48:06Yeah, that's it. That's it.
- 48:08Which is crazy. Tiny Hollister.
- 48:10Shorts and it is like I do. Honestly it is sad to me when
- 48:13she dies first. Oh my God, me too.
- 48:15Because she doesn't want to be in the woods.
- 48:17It's like it's fault. Like it's typical thing where
- 48:21she's like I don't want to do this, I don't want to be out
- 48:23here. And he's like come on, come on,
- 48:25we have to have 6 on this Like nasty mossy.
- 48:29Oh yeah, that was another. Thing is the likes.
- 48:31They say to her, they're like, oh, like maybe you should go lay
- 48:36down or like, do you want to go lay down?
- 48:37Like they, the other characters know that she's drunk and that
- 48:42her boyfriend is like going to take her outside to go have sex.
- 48:45That was that was like tough. That was tough.
- 48:49Right. Yeah, but that's now we're
- 48:53escalating. She's she's.
- 48:55Wrecked. Immediately wrecked.
- 48:57Yeah. Chris Hemsworth.
- 49:00I mean, I guess he's a little shocked she's dead.
- 49:02Not crying. Well, he's fighting for his
- 49:05goddamn life. Yeah, trying to piece it
- 49:08together. I mean, I mean this whole next
- 49:10section really is just literally like.
- 49:12It's the slashing. Survive.
- 49:14Yeah, it's the slashing this part is, I mean, it's
- 49:18entertaining. It's it's the slasher we came
- 49:21here for. It's, you know, the everything
- 49:25is so like over the top and honestly really well acted.
- 49:31I thought the performances were great, like great directing,
- 49:33great performances. I was like, Oh yeah, we're in a
- 49:36slasher now. Yeah, they they really turn it
- 49:40on. And then and then you do get the
- 49:42whipping. The fool, he becomes aware that
- 49:48he's in a movie in a way that the others don't.
- 49:52Or I guess what does he say? He's like I'm on reality TV.
- 49:55Yeah. Like.
- 49:57That was so funny. He's like, my mom's going to
- 49:59think I'm such a burnout because he finds the camera.
- 50:02But he already knew. He already had a suspicion that
- 50:05things were not as they seem, that there were puppeteers.
- 50:08Does he like OK when he sings Zombie coming at him with a
- 50:12knife? Are are we meant to think he's
- 50:14like, oh, that's not a real knife?
- 50:15Like this isn't a real zombie. No, I think he, he knows that
- 50:18it's real. He knows that there is real
- 50:19harm, OK, but he but he also was like, we don't have free will.
- 50:23Things are being orchestrated right?
- 50:25Yeah. And then he goes, OK, so this is
- 50:28when the movie starts getting very smart.
- 50:30I think we've said that like 3 times.
- 50:32Probably we are meant to believe and like the facility believes
- 50:40he's dead. They pull their little switch to
- 50:42like they do their Hunger Games cannon for his death, whatever.
- 50:47And he's not. Oh yeah.
- 50:50Huge twist later, like he's dragged off into the woods.
- 50:54I don't know how he's not dead frankly.
- 50:58Especially while very high like. But they said that the stuff
- 51:03that he was smoking was actually making him smarter.
- 51:05They're like, Oh no, it's actually making him more aware
- 51:08of what's going on. I kind of like that.
- 51:10Yeah, also huge. They can literally like, manage
- 51:13to drug people with their hair coloring.
- 51:18Yeah, at their whatever stylist or like the salon, but somehow
- 51:22they like, can't control the weed he has.
- 51:23Yeah, it's like, OK, yeah. Doesn't sound like a fool to me.
- 51:28Sounds like they're the fools, frankly.
- 51:30And you said it. And they OK, so order goes.
- 51:36Or we're meant to believe Horror fool.
- 51:41No horror. Because and then we think you
- 51:43guys, the other three trying to escape, Chris Hemsworth has a
- 51:47little hero moment, which we know obviously is not going to
- 51:51work. OK.
- 51:53And then this confused me. They drive back and then Holden
- 52:00gets stabbed in the neck by the zombie in the truck.
- 52:05That was just what, hanging there the whole time?
- 52:07They were like trying to do the force field moment.
- 52:11He's just waiting. Yeah, probably because it's like
- 52:13more exciting to the gods that they, like, space it out a
- 52:16little, right? You know?
- 52:18I don't know. Yeah.
- 52:19I mean, the gods want to be entertained.
- 52:21That's what the whole thing's for.
- 52:22I guess so. It's like their sleepy time tea.
- 52:26It's their sleepy time tea. Their annual sleepy Time tea.
- 52:30Right, Yes. So that that those deaths all
- 52:33happen quite. It's quite quickly for us at
- 52:37least. Yes, she is dying.
- 52:41They're starting to celebrate. Yeah.
- 52:43Because they're like, it doesn't matter if she lives or dies.
- 52:45Right, which is also. She just must suffer.
- 52:48Yeah, that's. I mean, but that's the trope.
- 52:51It's like the Virgin might live, she might die, but she will
- 52:54suffer. Right.
- 52:56Everyone she loves is going to get killed.
- 52:59Yes, she will be left alone. She will never be the same.
- 53:02Right, And then we get big surprise.
- 53:05The fool's the hero. He's also somehow genius enough
- 53:08to find the entrance. The bunker, Yeah.
- 53:14That the zombies came out of. Yeah.
- 53:15He's also now an electrician or something.
- 53:18Right. He figures out how to work the
- 53:20elevator. It seems like maybe it wasn't
- 53:23that hard. I mean, would it be hard for me?
- 53:26Yes. Would it be hard for someone who
- 53:28maybe has seen a breaker box before and done something with
- 53:32it? Maybe not.
- 53:34I was going to say, you know, one huge kind of this movie is
- 53:37that there's zero gay content. Not one clear thing happens
- 53:42literally the whole time, however.
- 53:43Except for Sigourney Weaver's like suit.
- 53:48That's true. I think that was a little that
- 53:50was, I mean, honestly, that was huge.
- 53:53I mean that. Was huge for the LG Power T
- 53:56audience. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:58And if we want to read into it, yeah, figuring out the elevator
- 54:01just by randomly hitting wires, gays and stem.
- 54:04That's so true. And you know what?
- 54:06There is an argument to be made that all of those monsters were
- 54:09actually living in the closet and they girl came out.
- 54:15Damn. It's coming out.
- 54:16The National Coming Out Day is actually what that day was.
- 54:20And they did it. And they and they did it.
- 54:23Heads will roll. So actually, I think, yeah, it
- 54:29actually was pretty good. Sure.
- 54:31But there was not enough kissy kissy, smoochy, smoochy.
- 54:35Right, yeah, we we see one shirtless guy.
- 54:40I'm so sorry. Although I guess we get we get
- 54:43some hore tits. That's true.
- 54:46And the men, really. That was icky.
- 54:49That was icky because it was sort of like, I don't know, it
- 54:54was played as though like, yeah, they're the bad guys.
- 54:57And the other ones that are like, don't just try and get her
- 54:59to take her top off are the good ones.
- 55:00But it's like they're bad too because they're all complicit in
- 55:03this scheme. But at the same time, it's like,
- 55:06well, are they all bad? Or are they just doing their job
- 55:09because they have to please the gods when we get safe humanity?
- 55:12We get the one security guard, which I guess is meant to like
- 55:15kind of answer that question because he he's the only one
- 55:19there. That's like, this is my job.
- 55:20I don't take pleasure in this. Everyone else is kind of like
- 55:24into it. But it's like, OK, but you're
- 55:26still there. Like, it doesn't really matter
- 55:28that much whether you're taking it doesn't matter to the people
- 55:32who are being killed, whether or not you take pleasure in it.
- 55:36You're still like, it doesn't matter that to them whether
- 55:39you're placing a bet, the outcome is going to be the same
- 55:41for them. So why are you so much better
- 55:45than everyone else you know? Which I guess gets to the whole
- 55:48point. The fool and the virgin, they're
- 55:52going to stick it to the man. It's a huge F you for putting us
- 55:56through this. Let the monsters out.
- 55:59Yeah, chaos. Chaos.
- 56:03Insane. Yeah, I love it.
- 56:05They chose so many monsters. Yes.
- 56:10Of every flavour and we we intimately see them all doing
- 56:16wild. Stuff, it was like, wow, this is
- 56:20the, this is the homage to Harmony.
- 56:26This is where everyone says, oh, there's that from that movie,
- 56:28there's that from that movie, there's that from that movie,
- 56:30right? It's fun.
- 56:32And then we get the question ultimately right, which is a, do
- 56:38we believe the facility that this like what they're actually
- 56:41saying is going to happen is real?
- 56:43Why? OK, why were they so quick to
- 56:47believe Sigourney Weaver's character when she's like, yeah,
- 56:50This is why this is all happening?
- 56:53So you're going to have to die in order to save humanity,
- 56:58Wouldn't it be? Wouldn't it behoove you to say,
- 57:02am I sure about this? Why would they believe this lady
- 57:05anyway? I'm sorry I interrupted you.
- 57:06You're going to say another thing.
- 57:07No, that that's like exactly. It's it's the they have to make
- 57:12a decision of whether or not like it is like kind of what the
- 57:19security guard is right? It's like, is he actually better
- 57:22than them for being there right. And if you believe the
- 57:26assumption, the premise is true that literally every human being
- 57:30on earth will die, right? If this doesn't happen, then
- 57:36then you can say like he's not happy about it, but he's trying
- 57:40to like keep the world from ending, right?
- 57:42But but then to your point begs the question, if you have to
- 57:46accept that anyway, why not just lean in and say like, I'm what?
- 57:51I'm going to sit here and be depressed.
- 57:53Yeah. And like, really miserable about
- 57:55the fact that we're like killing people if you have to do it
- 58:00every year. Like you, I think I understand
- 58:04how a human would be like, I can't emotionally handle being
- 58:08sad about the reality of this the whole time, right?
- 58:12And flipping the switch. Oh yeah.
- 58:16Although you get to the point too with like seeing the success
- 58:19of all the other ones. The other option is like, what
- 58:28if America's not the one that fails?
- 58:30Yeah. Right.
- 58:32Like it, it's this weird thing to be like, oh, it's always our
- 58:35responsibility to be the one that like, actually does the
- 58:38messed up wild stuff. Well, they did say that Sweden
- 58:43had a perfect record. Right, right.
- 58:45Yeah. Was it Sweden?
- 58:47Yeah. Some other country that they
- 58:48said had a perfect record. But it but it kind of begs the
- 58:51question, they're like operating under the assumption every other
- 58:54country has their shit together enough that they won't be like,
- 58:59I don't know. Well, in the universe of this
- 59:03movie, there's a reason why some countries have better horror
- 59:10movies than others. Remember that.
- 59:12It's like. That's why Japan and the US were
- 59:14like the last two to be in the running because Japan and the US
- 59:18have they make, they make good horror movies.
- 59:22So it's not so much about like the well, it's not, it's not a
- 59:25direct commentary on like the morality of this entire culture.
- 59:31It's more like, it's more like the that country's ability to
- 59:36make a good horror movie. Right.
- 59:39Which it like, yeah, I guess we're seeing.
- 59:42But it might be, it might also be what you're saying like
- 59:44indirectly, I think, yeah. Yeah, when you kind of get to
- 59:48the point too, right? Where the like the at the end.
- 59:54God, what is Dana I guess. Dana.
- 59:58I guess I'm like, I guess a perfect.
- 59:59Way to describe her. She's Dana, I guess.
- 1:00:02Dana and Marty are there, and Dana's like, actually going to
- 1:00:06maybe shoot him. Oh yeah.
- 1:00:08Because she's like, well, it's the world, are you?
- 1:00:11And you can tell she's sad about it.
- 1:00:13And it's like she's attached to him because he's actually like
- 1:00:16friends with her and like has like literally saved her.
- 1:00:20He's like literally a good person.
- 1:00:22Right. And the way he sees it right is
- 1:00:25like, it's not worth me being a bad person just to save the
- 1:00:32world. He said, you know what, burn it
- 1:00:35all. He said humanity was probably
- 1:00:38doomed to for this. You know, it's like this is how
- 1:00:42it was meant to be. And I think that that's like,
- 1:00:46it's such a satisfying ending. It's like it's the end of the
- 1:00:52world. Literally everyone dies.
- 1:00:55And it's such a satisfying ending, Yeah.
- 1:00:57Yeah, I mean, because what do you, what do you do in that?
- 1:01:00Situation. What else are you going to do?
- 1:01:02Like I'm I'm not killing my friend I went on the camping
- 1:01:05trip with. I'm going to smoke a joint in my
- 1:01:09bloody shirt with my pal and say sayonara.
- 1:01:14That's what they do. Yeah, also, even if she kills
- 1:01:17him, she's not getting out of there alive with all those
- 1:01:21monsters running loose. Well, yeah, the premise is that
- 1:01:23she would kill him and then kill herself.
- 1:01:26Oh, would she? Well, I guess, yeah.
- 1:01:28Or die from dying out or whatever.
- 1:01:30Yeah. Wait, if she goes to him, she
- 1:01:33doesn't have to though, right? But she probably would.
- 1:01:36Yeah, but she probably would. Yeah, or like, I'm assuming the
- 1:01:39werewolf bites that stop her from killing him are going to do
- 1:01:44her over. Yeah, but but how crazy.
- 1:01:46If you're like, Oh yeah, I believe you.
- 1:01:49I have to kill you to stop the world.
- 1:01:51And then it's like if the premise is false and you didn't
- 1:01:53actually have to do it. Right, if Sigourney Weaver was
- 1:01:56lying. Right.
- 1:01:58Then you have to live with that. So I think it's like the safe
- 1:02:02bet of like, I'm not going to kill my friend just with these
- 1:02:06because you can't disprove the alternative, right?
- 1:02:09That's true. You can't disprove it till the
- 1:02:11sun comes up. Yeah, just like if you don't
- 1:02:13kill him, the only way to find out if it's real.
- 1:02:18It's to wait. Is and then you don't get the do
- 1:02:20over obviously. But if she does kill him and the
- 1:02:23world doesn't end, she doesn't know if it was real or not
- 1:02:27anyway because she either stopped the apocalypse or she
- 1:02:32just did what they wanted and the world was never going to end
- 1:02:35anyway. Although I will say the the fact
- 1:02:40all of the supernatural stuff is happening is maybe why they
- 1:02:44believe her right? Because it's like all of the
- 1:02:48stuff I thought did not exist and like should be impossible.
- 1:02:52They're like, oh, this is this is all true.
- 1:02:56And if that is true, then this must also be true.
- 1:02:59That, that makes sense. They'd go to a lot of like, I
- 1:03:04don't know, it's a lot of work to put that whole facility
- 1:03:06together. Apparently.
- 1:03:07I don't know who collected the monsters or how.
- 1:03:12Yeah, I don't know. Very dangerous to have like
- 1:03:15basically it's like a bunch of nuke.
- 1:03:17Like it might as well be like an arsenal of nukes collected.
- 1:03:20It'd be weird to have like. Guess what, some places do have
- 1:03:24arsenals of nukes. That's true.
- 1:03:27I don't know any. And neither do I.
- 1:03:31Right. No, Yeah.
- 1:03:33I'm like, I'm don't target me U.S. government, but I yeah,
- 1:03:39it'd be a lot of work to do all that if it wasn't real.
- 1:03:43So I guess that's why they're going to be like, OK, I'll I
- 1:03:45guess I'll take your word for it.
- 1:03:47I'll see. You were an alien.
- 1:03:49They saw alien. They were a huge fan.
- 1:03:51Big fan of your work so. I guess, yeah.
- 1:03:56Plus the pantsuit. Really convincing.
- 1:03:58Totally. Anyone in a pantsuit can tell no
- 1:04:00lies. That's actually so true.
- 1:04:03I forgot about that part. Yeah.
- 1:04:05OK, Jimmy, do we think this movie holds up?
- 1:04:08I do. I do too.
- 1:04:11I think like it's really cool to see the direction that the
- 1:04:15horror genre has gone since this film.
- 1:04:19Like I think that there are there has been this really fun
- 1:04:24like revitalization of slashers. There's been this really fun
- 1:04:28crossover between sci-fi and horror.
- 1:04:32There's been like a lot of a lot of horror films with meta
- 1:04:37commentary on the horror genre itself.
- 1:04:41I just you know, it's not like the dumb torture porn movies
- 1:04:46have totally gone away, but they don't have the same from my
- 1:04:49perspective. They don't have the same, you
- 1:04:53know, no pun intended, chokehold that they did that they did on
- 1:04:58our culture compared to what like 2007, 2008 ish, you know,
- 1:05:05so I don't know. I just think like it holds up
- 1:05:08because it's really smart. Like the CGI is not good, but it
- 1:05:11doesn't really matter. It was good at the time, right?
- 1:05:15And but. And it wasn't important for it
- 1:05:17to be good. Wasn't important for it to be.
- 1:05:18Good. Like if if it's not perfect,
- 1:05:21then it's like, oh, we meant that on purpose.
- 1:05:24So it yeah, is a commentary on right, how bad CGI can be or
- 1:05:28whatever in a horror. Totally.
- 1:05:29Totally. Yeah, so.
- 1:05:31Do you think other movies actually were influenced by
- 1:05:36like? I haven't thought about it at
- 1:05:37all. Like if if anything is like
- 1:05:39referenced this or like changed because of it.
- 1:05:42I would. I'd buy it if someone told me.
- 1:05:44But. You know, it's hard for me to
- 1:05:47think of like a specific Easter egg that I've seen in other
- 1:05:52movies. I'm sure that like other people
- 1:05:54who are better versed in horror could call me out on that, but I
- 1:05:59think that it's more like we've gone, we've gone so far on like
- 1:06:05the commentary on the commentary on the commentary that that's, I
- 1:06:11don't know. I think it's, it's a part of
- 1:06:13culture beyond just horror too, that there's like always a
- 1:06:16commentary on a commentary on a commentary.
- 1:06:19And I think, yeah, like, I don't know.
- 1:06:23I do think it holds up. It, Yeah, it.
- 1:06:25It feels like a very nice way to put a button on horror movies up
- 1:06:29until that point, yeah. Even Even if nothing directly
- 1:06:36comes from like a like if they made a sequel or something
- 1:06:39right, it'd be very weird. Yeah, like they can't.
- 1:06:42Yeah, but yeah, there's nothing about it that like actually is
- 1:06:48problematic feeling. Nothing I clocked is like
- 1:06:52actually like I I guess if you really want to go crazy digging
- 1:06:58for something, it's like the fact that like you were saying
- 1:07:04earlier, like the Chris Hemsworth character, like the
- 1:07:07jock is like very aggressive, like trying to be like.
- 1:07:11But that, like even that is like meant to be pointing out that
- 1:07:15trope of men. Yes, yes.
- 1:07:18And also like his sexual aggression is engineered by the
- 1:07:23people at the facility, right? Yeah.
- 1:07:26Or at least I think it's supposed to be.
- 1:07:27So yeah, I think. A kind of a rare find of a movie
- 1:07:33that has, like, nothing. Yeah.
- 1:07:34And even that's like, not even the construction of the movie
- 1:07:36itself. Right.
- 1:07:38They did say at some point there was there's one word.
- 1:07:44What was it, Celebutard? I think that probably Denise.
- 1:07:52Well. Yeah, it's also just a clunky
- 1:07:54word. Yeah.
- 1:07:56I'm not enticed to want to say it anyway.
- 1:07:58Yeah. So we'll just kind of leave it
- 1:08:00in 2011. Yeah, OK, cool.
- 1:08:03Who do they say that? I can't remember I that's all I
- 1:08:06wrote down was Celebi tard. Celebi Tard.
- 1:08:11And I believe you. And I'm so sorry for saying Oh
- 1:08:15my God. Oh my God.
- 1:08:16OK, Speaking of things aging well, have you seen Jimmy?
- 1:08:20This this TikTok of there's like this, this artist, this little
- 1:08:29maker who creates a create your own carabiner kit.
- 1:08:34Are you familiar? With this OK, OK.
- 1:08:36Oh God. You must send it to me.
- 1:08:39OK, so there is a there's this like sweet little gay creator
- 1:08:46who's like, I have this, this, I don't know, Like I don't
- 1:08:53actually understand the mechanisms of it, but it's a
- 1:08:57build your own, no. No.
- 1:09:01Nice. Yeah.
- 1:09:02Carabiner. Yeah, we can't.
- 1:09:04Some words we can't shorten. And and she like goes into I
- 1:09:09mean, she is like so amped on it, like just sweet, blissful,
- 1:09:15like just elated about this new, this new trick up her sleeve,
- 1:09:22right. And the.
- 1:09:24And she means it very genuinely has no idea she's saying
- 1:09:27something probably. Has no idea her apology video is
- 1:09:31so. No, she had to make one.
- 1:09:34It's. So earnest, Jimmy.
- 1:09:36But that's The thing is she's. Like I woke up.
- 1:09:38I woke up and I didn't know. And like, I'm so sorry.
- 1:09:42Like I was like, so excited, but you know, obviously, you know,
- 1:09:48minus the slur, like. Minus the.
- 1:09:51Slur. Oh my God.
- 1:09:52Other than the slur, I've. Shout out to shout out to Miriam
- 1:09:55Moreno who made me aware of this of this TikTok.
- 1:09:59I gotta say the the comments section is everything.
- 1:10:05The entire comment section is just Mexican people saying LO
- 1:10:09L0L 0LOL. She has no idea.
- 1:10:12She has no idea. But that's The thing is like she
- 1:10:18obviously is not saying that word ever is a slurp.
- 1:10:20Because she doesn't know I know. Poor thing, I mean.
- 1:10:24Like people who are problematic know the word they're saying is
- 1:10:28a problem. This like sweet naive person.
- 1:10:32The apology, her having an apology video is like I guess
- 1:10:35fine. You know, I'm glad that she she
- 1:10:38did it. Like she was like, I had no
- 1:10:41idea. And I am so sorry.
- 1:10:44And like, yeah, I'm just like, I'm really sorry.
- 1:10:48I guess, I guess she has to do it just to explain why she
- 1:10:50stopped saying it all of a sudden.
- 1:10:52Like the fight. It would be weird if she went
- 1:10:54from saying it all the time in every video.
- 1:10:56Did you say never again with no explanation?
- 1:10:58Yeah, yeah. If it were me, I would have also
- 1:11:02made an apology video. Yeah, but a lot of people saw
- 1:11:06the apology video before the original because the apology
- 1:11:09video like took off. Right.
- 1:11:11And then they went back and found.
- 1:11:13Oh, it's so, it's so funny. I was laughing myself to sleep
- 1:11:18last night. I was watching it like in bed
- 1:11:20right before I went to sleep. And it's I'm licking it up.
- 1:11:24OK, so. So look it up.
- 1:11:27Gosh, why did I bring that up? Well, because celebutard.
- 1:11:31Oh, yeah. It was like, there's some words
- 1:11:32that we need to leave in the past.
- 1:11:34And I was like, Oh yeah. Yeah, do you wanna say it again
- 1:11:37or do? You wanna like just say it one
- 1:11:39more time. Yeah, just for like, Hey,
- 1:11:41what's? A where to?
- 1:11:42What's a way to say a short word for carabiner like Cara?
- 1:11:47Yeah, yeah. OK, Jamie, I have a final game
- 1:11:51for us. We're gonna we're gonna run
- 1:11:53through this. OK, so, so listener, if you've
- 1:11:55heard Jimmy on this podcast before, you may be familiar with
- 1:11:59a game called Gay Enough. This is a game that comes from
- 1:12:02an inside joke about things simply being gay enough.
- 1:12:07And that's all the context that you're going to get.
- 1:12:09But this will be fun for both of us.
- 1:12:12OK, So the question is, is it gay enough?
- 1:12:14We're doing a movie franchise edition.
- 1:12:16Oh, OK. Is the Marvel Cinematic Universe
- 1:12:19gay enough? Oh, this is crazy.
- 1:12:23There, there's there's hot people in it.
- 1:12:28And that's so true. However, it is straight culture,
- 1:12:33almost the pinnacle of straight culture.
- 1:12:35It is aggressively heterosexual to me, yeah.
- 1:12:38Yeah, like even even if like a lot of queer people love comics,
- 1:12:43superheroes, etcetera, right? Find a lot of joy.
- 1:12:47It is engineered so specifically to be mainstream and vanilla you
- 1:12:52have to say it's not good enough.
- 1:12:53Yeah, I agree. OK, Friday the 13th.
- 1:12:59I mean, like I said earlier, horror kind of lends itself
- 1:13:02automatically. Yeah, gay.
- 1:13:06It could be Gayer. It will.
- 1:13:08It always can. Be and that's kind of the
- 1:13:10premise. That's kind of the premise is
- 1:13:11that it always can be. You know, I think that Friday
- 1:13:15the 13th really set us up well for the real life Friday the
- 1:13:2013th pop up tattoo flash sales, which are very gay.
- 1:13:28I'm I'm talking particularly for, you know, like gay girls
- 1:13:32and non binary. Right.
- 1:13:34Very Spencer's at the mall, kind of.
- 1:13:37Cultural No, I'm thinking like the I'm thinking like the oh, I
- 1:13:40just like got a little. I just got a little ditty on my,
- 1:13:44I don't know, on my leg because I'm like a cool girl.
- 1:13:48Right. Yeah.
- 1:13:50I mean, I'm happy to call it gay enough.
- 1:13:53OK, barely. Barely.
- 1:13:56OK, finally, Jurassic Park. Is Jurassic Park gay enough?
- 1:13:59OK, Jonathan, Bailey's in it, the new one.
- 1:14:04That's so true. The little glasses also.
- 1:14:10You know what I will say to me, being on the spectrum and also
- 1:14:17being queer very much go hand in hand, girl.
- 1:14:22Girl. Girl, look at the material.
- 1:14:25Wait, I want to say dinosaur content is inherently very on
- 1:14:32the one hand, neurodivergent Jonathan Bailey's huge plus.
- 1:14:38Yeah, Oh my gosh. Please don't roast me for
- 1:14:42freaking his name. Not is it Jeff.
- 1:14:44Jeff Goldblum. Yeah, thank God.
- 1:14:46And I knew I would remember. Also very gay and like.
- 1:14:53He's like a gay icon. Yeah, even though he's like a
- 1:14:55straight guy, he's a gay icon. Also Laura Dern, The Short
- 1:14:58Short. Oh, she's also a guy.
- 1:15:00Gay icon so. They're all of those are the gay
- 1:15:03parts again, like Marvel made for the mainstream straight male
- 1:15:09viewer, Chris. Proud of it all.
- 1:15:11That part too, yeah, I think it's gay enough for the people
- 1:15:16who know that it's gay enough. Yeah.
- 1:15:20And for everybody else, I think it's aggressively heterosexual.
- 1:15:23Totally. Also something like the
- 1:15:27dinosaurs coming from frog eggs and like it's like a female.
- 1:15:32I don't know, there's like some weird thing with like a like a
- 1:15:34female dinosaur, like mates with, like there's like a weird,
- 1:15:39there's, there's, there's frog DNA, there's frogs involved.
- 1:15:43For sure there's. Frogs and the frogs.
- 1:15:44They're making the frogs gay. Oh, that's.
- 1:15:47So true. So they're.
- 1:15:49So, so it absolutely. I mean from the from the genetic
- 1:15:52level, it is gay enough so the frogs are gay.
- 1:15:56I do think I don't know if frogs are one of them.
- 1:15:58Oh God, not me failing biology right now in real time.
- 1:16:01Oh my God, so embarrassing. There are animals that like swap
- 1:16:04what sex they are. Yeah.
- 1:16:06And I think a frog. That is frogs.
- 1:16:08Yeah, so there you have it. So there you have it.
- 1:16:11Gayer than humans can be, they can be gay in every permutation
- 1:16:16they want. Oh my God, that's so true.
- 1:16:18Yeah, there's fucks me lesbians. They can be gay.
- 1:16:23That's not an exhaustive list. And that is not an exhaustive
- 1:16:26list. But it's some of the things on
- 1:16:28the list, yeah. It's the L and the G.
- 1:16:31Right. And I don't know, I guess
- 1:16:33inherently that that is T also. And a little B.
- 1:16:38Well. But it's certainly Q plus.
- 1:16:41And, you know, emphasis on the plus and.
- 1:16:47Let's not forget the IA. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:51Well. Well.
- 1:16:54We'll include them anyway, you know, I think by definition,
- 1:16:56they, they, they do be fucking into you.
- 1:17:00I don't know. I love you.
- 1:17:01A sisters and brothers and pals however frogs to be fucking.
- 1:17:09Yeah. So I don't know if that's your
- 1:17:11culture. Yeah, but we don't want to
- 1:17:14single you out because we know that we're doing that, you know?
- 1:17:18Now that I've already singled you out, let me sandwich.
- 1:17:21I did not to single. You out?
- 1:17:22But oh God, we're 15 minutes over what?
- 1:17:2417 minutes over what? I aimed for us to be at Jimmy.
- 1:17:28It's it's all my fault. No, it's it's definitely mine.
- 1:17:32OK, thanks. Ours.
- 1:17:33And I was and I was fishing for that listener.
- 1:17:37Thank you so much for being here.
- 1:17:39If you're listening to this and not watching it, you could be
- 1:17:43watching it on YouTube and also on Spotify.
- 1:17:45You can watch the video version. And if you're watching the video
- 1:17:49version, guess what? You could also be listening to
- 1:17:51it. We, we, we offer a little
- 1:17:52something for everybody. Please, please, for the love of
- 1:17:55God, write a review. I have not gotten a review in a
- 1:17:59long time. And it makes me think that you
- 1:18:01don't like me and I just might die.
- 1:18:06Well, and we all do like hopefully not soon.
- 1:18:11Oh, wow. Die.
- 1:18:12Yeah, yeah. So, so hopefully let's let's
- 1:18:17keep me alive and well. Yeah, write a review.
- 1:18:21Just write a review. It's easy.
- 1:18:23It's so easy. Just say wow, 2 hot people on a
- 1:18:27couch, what more could you want out of a podcast?
- 1:18:30There I wrote it. There you go, you could copy and
- 1:18:33paste. Literally everybody just do
- 1:18:34that. Okay?
- 1:18:35Thank you. Yeah, Jimmy, thank you so much
- 1:18:37for coming on the show. This is such a pleasure being on
- 1:18:41the couch in the studio with you.
- 1:18:43I love it. I love it.
- 1:18:44It's a great studio. Yeah, anytime.
- 1:18:46Okay, well, bye. Bye.
