Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:09every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:21It is a big day here for the Infinite Scroll Mini Scroll
- 0:25podcast because today this episode is officially my 300th
- 0:32podcast episode. What the hell?
- 0:35So I feel like there are a lot of new subscribers here,
- 0:38especially on YouTube and you guys might not know the lore of
- 0:42the podcast. I feel like there is some
- 0:45confusion that this is like a YouTube channel as opposed to a
- 0:50podcast. And I think that's just because,
- 0:52you know, the whole, our whole back catalogue is not on
- 0:55YouTube. We only started filming the
- 0:57podcast at the beginning of last year, at the beginning of 2023.
- 1:01And so there's like 3 full seasons in our RSS feed that is
- 1:05not on YouTube. Please don't go back and listen.
- 1:08It makes me want to die. It makes me want to cringe.
- 1:11But yes. So we started this podcast in
- 1:14February 2020. It was a weekly podcast and then
- 1:17we went to twice weekly. And then when my Co host and
- 1:20business partner left, I went to basically a daily podcast five
- 1:24days a week and that was this year.
- 1:25So it has been such an evolution, such a journey and it
- 1:29feels a bit bittersweet. I was talking about this on my
- 1:32TikTok and my Instagram. Follow me on Instagram, please
- 1:35at Lauren Meisner under score, But I was talking about this on
- 1:40those platforms because I remember when we hit 100, say a
- 1:45million, I wish when we hit 100 episodes and it was so exciting.
- 1:50We actually threw like a dinner for some of you guys in Sydney
- 1:54and you came and we treated you to this like beautiful dinner at
- 1:57Chin Chin. And it was just like such an
- 1:59exciting moment. And if you had asked that girl
- 2:03then where the podcast and the business would be at 300
- 2:07episodes, I would have said somewhere so different than
- 2:11where I actually am. So it is difficult, I think,
- 2:15sometimes to reflect on these milestones because it feels like
- 2:19I'm not at the place that I wish that I was, Like, I wish the
- 2:22business. So this is like an arm of my
- 2:24business. I own a media brand.
- 2:26It can be hard to look at some of the podcasts that do similar
- 2:29coverage, whether they're in Australia or internationally and
- 2:32see, you know, how successful they are and kind of of course,
- 2:36like, compare and just be like, OK, I've been doing this for
- 2:38five years. Like, how have we not had our
- 2:40big break yet? And part of it is that for the
- 2:43first three full seasons reasons, we had no marketing or
- 2:46distribution plan. Like I said, we didn't film it.
- 2:48So we didn't have clips on TikTok.
- 2:50We didn't have clips on YouTube, we didn't have full videos on
- 2:53YouTube. So anyways, that's just a bit of
- 2:56a tangent there. But yes, so this is my 300th
- 2:59episode and I'm so thankful to all of you guys, whether you've
- 3:03been here for years or you're a new listener for like sticking
- 3:07it out with me, figuring out kind of the new vibe of this
- 3:10podcast, rolling with the punches.
- 3:12We've had a lot of changes, not just this year, but like over
- 3:14the course of all the seasons, we've had many changes and
- 3:18evolutions and I'm just really grateful for all of you guys.
- 3:22Also, I should note, I know you guys on YouTube that watch on
- 3:25YouTube really liked the background that I had yesterday,
- 3:28but I just like could not figure out the lighting and it is a
- 3:30sunny day today. So I was like, I just need to
- 3:32capitalize on this big window and the sun and just go back to
- 3:36my bedroom and do it where I was doing it before.
- 3:38But I also have a couple other housekeeping things to let you
- 3:41guys know about. The 1st is that I have a very
- 3:44exciting sponsorship coming up and I would love if you guys
- 3:47would support it. It would help me and the
- 3:50business so much because I'm so excited about the sponsorship.
- 3:54It is for the app carted this so is not sponsored by them, but
- 3:58they have sponsored the deep dive on Friday and we have a
- 4:01tick tock campaign going live over the next couple weeks with
- 4:03them, but I'll put the link down below.
- 4:05If you guys are interested in downloading the app after you
- 4:09listen to the ad and you kind of learn more about it, please use
- 4:12our link instead of just going into the App Store because it
- 4:15really, really helps us out. It is like a practical Pinterest
- 4:18board basically like all the influencers are using it and
- 4:21posting about it. It's literally like A wish list
- 4:23app where you can curate different like aesthetics and
- 4:26boards for like what you want to buy.
- 4:28And then you can put those exact links from the stores in them.
- 4:31So you can curate like let's say you're like vacation wardrobe or
- 4:34whatever. You can see how much everything
- 4:36costs and then you get like notifications and things like
- 4:38that when like the prices drop and whatever It's really cool.
- 4:41So anyways, so if you guys are interested said please use our
- 4:43link. Again, this particular episode
- 4:45is not sponsored, but I just wanted to let you guys know
- 4:47about that link. OK.
- 4:48And the last thing that I wanted to mention is obviously I'm here
- 4:51visiting my parents in Canada right now and then I go to
- 4:54Europe next Thursday because one of my best friends is getting
- 4:57married in Italy. So Sean and I are going over for
- 5:00a two week Europe trip and I'm taking those two weeks off and
- 5:05I'm a little bit like overwhelmed by it, but I think
- 5:07it'll be good. Like I really need a break.
- 5:09Like I really need a break. So I'm hoping that I can like
- 5:12actually properly relax. However, that means there won't
- 5:15be time for like a full deep dive next Friday.
- 5:18So there'll still be a deep dive this Friday coming up, but next
- 5:21Friday because I leave on Thursday, I won't have capacity
- 5:24to get like a typical like big deep dive up.
- 5:27So I was thinking either we could just have no episode or if
- 5:31you guys want AQ and AI could do AQ and a because that would
- 5:34require a lot less editing from my editor.
- 5:36So I could get that up and like schedule it in time for me to,
- 5:40you know, have it up before I leave.
- 5:41So let me know if you guys want AQ and AI can do one and let me
- 5:45know what questions If so, maybe put them in the comments or just
- 5:48DM me. You can DM infinite scroll.
- 5:50You can DM my Instagram. So yes, all right, I have three
- 5:55stories for you guys today. The first one, we have to talk
- 5:58about this. Chapel Roan has opened up about
- 6:01fans crossing her boundaries yet again in a new TikTok series.
- 6:06So yesterday, Chapel Roan posted two TikTok videos about how
- 6:09uncomfortable it makes her when fans approach her in public, ask
- 6:13for photos, or cross like certain boundaries with her.
- 6:16I need you to answer questions. Just answer my questions for a
- 6:19second. If you saw a random woman on the
- 6:21street, would you yell at her from the car window?
- 6:24Would you harass her in public? Would you go up to a random lady
- 6:28and say, can I get a photo with you?
- 6:30And she's like, no, what the fuck?
- 6:33And then you get mad at this random lady.
- 6:37Would you be offended if she says no to your time?
- 6:43I'm a random bitch. You're a random bitch.
- 6:47Just think about that for a second, OK?
- 6:50I don't care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever
- 6:56is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a
- 7:02little famous, whatever. I don't care that it's normal.
- 7:04I don't care that this crazy type of behavior comes along
- 7:09with the job, the career field I've chosen.
- 7:13That does not make it OK. That doesn't make it normal.
- 7:16I don't. Doesn't mean I want it, doesn't
- 7:18mean that I like it. I don't want whatever the fuck
- 7:22you think you're supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a
- 7:26celebrity. Chapel has opened up about how
- 7:28she doesn't like this element of fame before in different
- 7:31interviews, especially over the last few months when her fame
- 7:34has really risen. However, while she was in the
- 7:37middle of kind of her star rising, I actually did see
- 7:40something, I think it was maybe on Reddit where somebody was
- 7:43talking about how this is like an ongoing thing with Chapel.
- 7:46So like and they weren't saying it in a negative way, but they
- 7:48were just saying it's like well known in and her like OG fanbase
- 7:52that even before she was anywhere close to like as famous
- 7:55as she is now, she would constantly ask her fans not to
- 7:59approach her in public, especially because Chapel is
- 8:01like a drag persona for her. It's like an art project.
- 8:04And so her kind of everyday self, Kaylee doesn't want to be
- 8:08approached by fans. So it's definitely like a
- 8:10running thing with her. So the reception to these videos
- 8:13has been very mixed. Some people feel like just off
- 8:16the bat, this is like the beginning of the end that we are
- 8:19going to see of Chapel Roan, which would be very, very sad.
- 8:23I really hope that's not the case.
- 8:25But it feels like she's already getting pushed to a point so
- 8:29early in her career of just being fed up with fame all
- 8:33together. And she's talked about just like
- 8:35going off grid, like she talked about on Drew follows podcast,
- 8:37how she just wants to like, or how she she said when it gets to
- 8:40the point where she's so famous that her friends and family are,
- 8:44I'm not sure if she said like shouldn't say put in danger, but
- 8:46if like they're getting messages and harassed and if it's just
- 8:49not fun, she would stop doing it.
- 8:51And she was like, I'm at that point.
- 8:52So some people feel like that could be a very real
- 8:54possibility. And then of course, there are
- 8:56some people who feel like that reaction and that sentiment that
- 8:59she has towards fans is kind of entitled.
- 9:02Like it's entitled for her to not want fan interaction.
- 9:06And then others are defending her because of how toxic standom
- 9:10culture can be. I think there's always of course
- 9:13an element of like required interaction with fans.
- 9:17It's not a one way St. when you are a public figure and you are
- 9:20asking people to support you by spending their money, their
- 9:24time, their energy, traveling, things like that.
- 9:27You know, like of course there is an element where you need to
- 9:31give something to them too. And unfortunately just in the
- 9:34realm of celebrity that is not always just your art.
- 9:38Like there does need to be some type of like give and take.
- 9:42However, I think that the exposure that social media and
- 9:46particularly TikTok subjects modern day artists to has really
- 9:52increased fan entitlement lately.
- 9:54And I also think that at the height of paparazzi culture in
- 9:57the 90s and 2000s, a lot of celebrities probably felt this
- 10:01exact same way as Chapel, but they didn't have a Direct Line
- 10:06to their fans to express that. And like, Chapel's not the only
- 10:09celebrity that we've ever seen, you know, take to TikTok or
- 10:12Twitter or whatever and be like, leave me alone.
- 10:14Like Doja Cat, you know, has done that many times.
- 10:16It's like it's like a thing that's happening and I think
- 10:19sometimes it gets chalked up to like, oh, these Gen.
- 10:23Z faves or these younger stars just don't get it.
- 10:26They don't want to play the game.
- 10:27It's like that Gen. Z kind of like label.
- 10:30Everybody's like, oh, they have all these boundaries and
- 10:32whatever. But I think there's so much more
- 10:35to it than that. I think fan entitlement is at an
- 10:38all time peak because of platforms like TikTok.
- 10:41And because of platforms like TikTok, these celebrities have
- 10:45an opportunity to clap back. I am sure that there were
- 10:48celebrities having having mental breakdowns all the time about
- 10:51fan behavior and entitlement and stalking and things like that,
- 10:55but we just didn't see it because they couldn't have it.
- 10:57To us. There was always that layer of
- 10:59media protection there between a celebrity and a fan base.
- 11:02And then from the fan perspective, I do think there's
- 11:04this like, weird protectiveness with a lot of parasocial
- 11:09relationships developed online, and it almost makes their fan
- 11:13entitlement worse. So I find that a lot of fandoms
- 11:16for Gen. Z stars really infantilize those
- 11:19stars. They really infantilize the
- 11:21celebrities that they stand, including Chapel.
- 11:23Like she speaks out about being uncomfortable with fame and
- 11:27overwhelmed by certain elements of it.
- 11:30And her stands almost go like overboard to protect her.
- 11:35And it's as if she's like this fragile, like little girl that
- 11:38can't, you know, handle the limelight so that they swoop
- 11:41into like, save the day. And they're like the real fans
- 11:44because they actually know her and they actually have her best
- 11:47interest at heart. Like they are there to keep her
- 11:49safe. But that protectiveness also
- 11:51makes them have sometimes even more inappropriate behavior
- 11:54towards that celebrity because like they feel special as the
- 11:58fan. It's like they feel like Chapel
- 12:01isn't speaking to them. Like they are not the crazy fans
- 12:05that she's talking about. It's like the other ones who are
- 12:07like not real fans and like don't actually know her and
- 12:11wouldn't understand that she's like overwhelmed by this type of
- 12:13attention. So they almost feel like they
- 12:16have this free pass. And I'm not sure if it's
- 12:18conscious or not. Like I don't know if they
- 12:20realize that they're doing it, but they're acting as if they
- 12:23have this free pass because they're one of the chosen ones.
- 12:25Like they're one of the good ones when really like they are
- 12:28the ones that she is speaking to.
- 12:30I think at the end of the day, I feel really bad for her.
- 12:32I think regardless of where you sit on, like, if it's entitled
- 12:37to feel that way or if the fans are too rabid and crazy, like
- 12:40whatever your opinion on this is, I think at the end of the
- 12:44day, it's very clear that one of the most popular or like fastest
- 12:48rising artists right now in the world is struggling so much.
- 12:51And we're watching it happen. And she's telling us
- 12:53consistently. And it does make me question
- 12:56like who she has around her in terms of her team.
- 12:59I saw some people say, like, you know, is it possible that
- 13:02artists and celebrities, especially because of the rise
- 13:05of TikTok and social media, like they're just not as media
- 13:08trained and that's protected from these elements of like
- 13:12rapid fame as previously? And I'm not sure, but I really
- 13:17hope that whatever she's going through, she gets through it.
- 13:19I hope that the fans, if they are, like, stalking her and
- 13:22being crazy and really invading her space, like it just leave
- 13:26her alone. Like she's telling you she
- 13:27doesn't like it. OK, The next story that I have
- 13:30for you guys is that Alex Cooper has inked a $125 million podcast
- 13:36deal with SiriusXM. So after weeks of rumors that
- 13:41Alex Cooper was looking for a $100 million deal following her
- 13:44Spotify exclusive contract, it has been confirmed via Variety
- 13:49that SiriusXM is ready to pay up.
- 13:52So according to the publication, the deal will run a little over
- 13:55three years starting in 2025. They also got reports that the
- 13:59deal was closer to $100 million for three years as opposed to
- 14:02125. But either way, she got that.
- 14:05What is that, like 9 figures? Whatever, she got that big
- 14:08payday. I'm bad enough.
- 14:10So we'll start in 2025 because Alex's $60 million Spotify deal
- 14:14for three years will end in December of this year.
- 14:17So, as per Variety quote, SiriusXM will have exclusive
- 14:20rights for advertising, distribution, content, events,
- 14:23and more for Cooper's flagship Call Her Daddy podcast, as well
- 14:27as the lineup of shows from her Unwell Audio network.
- 14:30Call Her Daddy will continue to be available to Spotify
- 14:33listeners. So I would say that this seems
- 14:36like Sirius is really trying to take over Spotify's place in
- 14:40like the podcasting world. I don't think they've been as
- 14:44aggressive about it in the sense of like doing it all at once.
- 14:47Like there was just like this year or two, there felt like
- 14:49Spotify was just like grabbing up like every big podcast that
- 14:52they could and spending so much money.
- 14:54And we know that they've kind of changed course, like they've
- 14:57kind of changed their strategy and they're getting rid of that
- 15:00like true exclusive type of opportunity, it seems.
- 15:04And obviously they're not renewing some of these bigger
- 15:06contracts and stuff. So it feels like Sirius is
- 15:09almost trying to like fill that gap, but in a longer term, like
- 15:12more sustainable way. Recently, Sirius acquired
- 15:15several huge podcasts, obviously call her Daddy.
- 15:18They acquired Smartless Crime Junkie.
- 15:21So definitely trying to compete in the audio space.
- 15:24All right, in the last right that I have for you guys is just
- 15:27like an interesting tech culture youth story, iPad kids are
- 15:33taking over Twitter. So new data by parental control
- 15:37research firm Custodio found that 31% of Gen. alphas aged 7
- 15:43to 9 have a Twitter account. OK.
- 15:45And I'm thinking it's in the US because I think that this study
- 15:48that they did or this like this data that they collected, sorry,
- 15:51they did it via software, not by like respondents.
- 15:55I think it was US based. But either way, that is a
- 15:58massive number. Comparatively, the same data
- 16:00found that 28% are on Reddit and 26% are on Facebook.
- 16:06So X is the highest. The firm theorizes this might be
- 16:09because Twitter is ingrained in Google search.
- 16:11So when kids Google things basically on their tablets, you
- 16:14know, iPad, kids, whatever, they get X results and they click
- 16:18through and then they're kind of in the feed, right?
- 16:20So then they make an account. As per TechCrunch quote.
- 16:22Meanwhile, parents often think of X as an older app, so they
- 16:25may not block it or restrict it as they do with other social
- 16:28media apps like Tiktok or Snapchat.
- 16:30Unfortunately, parents ignorance could leave their kids to be
- 16:33exposed to inappropriate content.
- 16:35The report noted that X could expose these younger kids to
- 16:38hate speech, pornography, and disinformation, pointing to
- 16:42reports that indicate that 13% of all X posts feature adult
- 16:46content. I mean yes, I actually think
- 16:48like I hate a fear mongering moment and I think there is way
- 16:51too much of that online. But I do think that children
- 16:54being on X, especially after Elon Musk's takeover is so bad.
- 17:00Like definitely they should not be exposed to X Kids that are 7
- 17:04should not be seeing what is happening on X.
- 17:07It is like the depths of hell on that app.
- 17:11Anyways guys that's it for mini scroll today.
- 17:14That is it for my 300th episode. It is crazy to say that, so
- 17:20thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 17:23and subscribe. Please sign up to carted with
- 17:26our link down below if you're interested.
- 17:28I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 17:30Bye.
