- 0:00You're not just feeding people's stomachs, you're feeding
- 0:02dignity. How do you think BBQ gives
- 0:04people hope in ways words can't sometimes?
- 0:08Yeah, and that's something that we pride ourselves on.
- 0:11There's not much I say I have pride on, but we offer our best
- 0:14quality food to everybody. I had a late today to write an
- 0:17article about something we're doing and she's.
- 0:19You mean you just put brisket in the food pantry?
- 0:21I'm like, heck yeah. And she's, wait a minute, didn't
- 0:23brisket like 699 a pound Right now I'm like, Yep.
- 0:26And I spent 24 hours cooking it and I put $20 a seat and go
- 0:29through the whole thing and she's nobody else does that.
- 0:32I said exactly. That's what sets us apart from
- 0:34anybody else. We're offering our best
- 0:36barbecue, BBQ, BBQ, BBQ, BBQ. Ever notice how the sound of
- 0:46sizzling meat and the smell of smoke can silence the noise of
- 0:49the world? Now that's BBQ therapy.
- 0:53If the fire moves you like, subscribe, share and help spread
- 0:57the message because growth, like good BBQ, takes time and
- 1:01patience. Welcome to your therapy session.
- 1:06Welcome to the BBQ Therapy podcast.
- 1:08My name is Tavis Bryant, and today we're talking about more
- 1:12than BBQ. We're talking about purpose
- 1:14through pain, grace through grit, and how one man turned the
- 1:17smoker into a ministry. My guest is Pastor Jordan Davis,
- 1:22the founder of the Smoke and Pasture Project, a movement that
- 1:25feeds the body and the soul. He's giving away free food,
- 1:29brought hope to strangers, and lived through a test that would
- 1:33have broken most folks. Jordan, welcome to barbecue
- 1:36therapy. I got one rule.
- 1:37Make yourself at home. All right.
- 1:40Thanks for having me, man. I'm excited.
- 1:41And the first question I got for you, let's take it back.
- 1:44From what I heard, you were originally from Texas, correct?
- 1:47Yes, I was. I was actually born in Kentucky
- 1:49and then we moved from a little podunk town in Eastern KY to
- 1:53Houston, TX. So big time culture shock.
- 1:56I lived there for a while and man, my dad worked for Shell Oil
- 2:00there. And so we were there for a while
- 2:02and then moved back to Kentucky and then I moved to Oklahoma.
- 2:04I've been all around but them. Texas.
- 2:07That Texas BBQ root took early phase in my life.
- 2:10And you're in Indiana right now. I'm in, yeah.
- 2:13I'm just on the north side of Indianapolis.
- 2:15How did you end up in Indianapolis?
- 2:17Church man, God, Oh my God. We were in Oklahoma City and I
- 2:22was not at a church. I've been a kids master 20 years
- 2:25and I was not at a church and I was just working, helping a
- 2:28friend do some construction stuff.
- 2:29And this church kept calling and calling and I kept hanging up on
- 2:32them. Didn't want anything to do and
- 2:34man, God had other plans. And about six months later I
- 2:37found myself in Indianapolis. So that's the way God works.
- 2:42How did that conversation go with the wife?
- 2:45She's so we're very comfortable here.
- 2:47And I said, yeah, but our whole lives God has allowed us not to
- 2:50be comfortable and here we are again.
- 2:52That's like segues to today. When you were growing up, did
- 2:55you BBQ a lot or did your family BBQ?
- 2:58How did you learn? We ate a heck of a lot of BBQ.
- 3:01We ate that was like our Sunday thing, like a name you
- 3:04restaurant for restaurant Katy, TX, man, that was our Sunday
- 3:07spots going to barbecue. And then my dad did a lot of
- 3:10grilling, a lot of grilling and he always made this BBQ sauce
- 3:13that we all love. I still cannot perfect it to
- 3:15this day. He just makes it better than me.
- 3:18But it's like not a sauce I could ever bottle.
- 3:20Like we bottle sauce, we sell sauce, but it's got sauteed
- 3:22onions in it, like big chunks of sauteed onions.
- 3:25Really good on chicken, really good on chicken.
- 3:27And it's one of those things like you never bottle it, but
- 3:29man, it's good homemade sauce. And just that was like our way
- 3:33to connect to my family. My dad, super big engineer, I'm
- 3:37not that smart of a dude. And so like we always try to
- 3:39figure out like where we could bond.
- 3:41And so a lot of us do outdoor cooking.
- 3:42And then my mom same way, just always cooked.
- 3:46And so cooking was in me very early and then it moved into
- 3:49barbecue and then went away for a little bit.
- 3:51And I found myself man shoot even 9 years ago, I don't think
- 3:54I owned a smoker or a grill and then came back about 8 years ago
- 3:59so. Then once you join the church
- 4:02where you're cooking for the church, how did you get back
- 4:04into it? Started started cooking for the
- 4:07church I bought, man. So not let's see, eight years
- 4:09ago I bought a smoker on Facebook marketplace.
- 4:12I was like, man, I got to get back into this and bought a
- 4:14smoker on marketplace, started cooking food and at the church,
- 4:17started doing a lot of the church.
- 4:19And then that evolved into two smokers, 3 smokers, 5 smokers, 9
- 4:23smokers at one point is what I had in my backyard and that was
- 4:27just feeding people and my wife's man, this could be a cool
- 4:30business. Maybe a little side hustle
- 4:31during COVID, especially like everybody's trying to find that
- 4:34side hustle. And man, I just started giving
- 4:36it away. I'm like, man, I'm not a
- 4:37businessman. I don't want to make money.
- 4:39I want to make people happy. I want to craft smiles one bite
- 4:41at a time. That's what we do.
- 4:43And I started posting videos and then those videos just have
- 4:46taken off. And I spent some time in the
- 4:48hospital with COVID and really re evaluated what I was doing,
- 4:51my purpose for life, and found that video sequence is what God
- 4:55was really using to just proclaim his name to the public.
- 4:58And you were a youth pastor, kids.
- 5:01Man children so birth through 3rd grade is what I've done for
- 5:0420 years. Wow.
- 5:09And the whole time, like, how long were you a youth pastor?
- 5:13So 2020 years, 21 years this year.
- 5:15So I'm still technically full time until March, March.
- 5:18So I'm stair stepping down out of my full time role right now
- 5:20and moving into this nonprofit world.
- 5:22Oh wow, that's excellent. So when the food truck I guess
- 5:27did, did you still try to sell as well as giveaway or did you
- 5:31we? We tried to run the food truck
- 5:34as a free food truck, was the plan.
- 5:36About a year and a half ago we were given a free food truck and
- 5:41to work. We're going to pay it off over
- 5:43time and Labor Day weekend last year the whole truck was gone
- 5:47$130,000 food trailer. That's what it was estimated at
- 5:50was totally stolen. And man, I would, I thought like
- 5:55that was going to be the moment one, it got me some publicity.
- 5:57I thought, man, this is going to be the moment where this thing
- 5:59takes off. God's going to give me like all
- 6:00this money. We're going to be able to just
- 6:02roll and nothing happened. Nothing.
- 6:05And I'm like, wait a minute, God used the all things for glory.
- 6:08What's the deal? But what happened is, in
- 6:11hindsight now, you always realize what the real story is
- 6:14years down the road. But a year later, the food, the
- 6:17free food events was what got the vision off the ground for
- 6:20me. That's not the thing.
- 6:22And so I really wrestled for the last, like, year of what is the
- 6:25thing? What are we supposed to be
- 6:26doing? What's this look like?
- 6:28And one day I'm in a group with some guys and they're like
- 6:30Jordan, like, if you could just dream big, what would you do?
- 6:32And I said, I want to be the largest producer of fully cooked
- 6:35prepackaged meat for food pantries.
- 6:37And they're like, where did that come from?
- 6:39And I'm like, man, I don't know. I don't know where that came
- 6:41from, But that's the thing. And so the food trailer getting
- 6:45stolen really opened that door to where I figured out the
- 6:48thing. Everything else was just a why
- 6:50or a how of how we got started. But this is the thing that's
- 6:53driving what we're doing in the Smoking Pasture project.
- 6:56When did it stop being a hobby and start becoming something
- 6:59holy? When did you realize that fire
- 7:01wasn't just cooking, it was changing people's lives?
- 7:04I think the first event I did where I actually took a smoker
- 7:07to the public and realize all these dudes that were pretty
- 7:10messed up guys would gather around a smoker and hang out and
- 7:14be vulnerable. Oh, have good conversations.
- 7:17And I'm like this, there's something here.
- 7:19And so that's when I started getting into the BBQ competition
- 7:21kind of world, a little bit of, hey, what's it look like for me
- 7:26to be able to be this light in this dark community?
- 7:29What I love about your story, it wasn't about business first.
- 7:32You woke up thinking OK let's serve people and tell me about
- 7:38that mindset. Feeding people with 0
- 7:40expectation in return because everybody can't do that.
- 7:43I mean it. And people look at you.
- 7:45Probably like you're. Crazy.
- 7:47Yeah, and even people ask me a lot like, how do I do that?
- 7:51You've got to make sure your motives are right.
- 7:53You just got to be careful. You got to realize that you're
- 7:56going to get taken advantage of. And that's OK if your heart's in
- 7:59at the right spot. People, I just planned.
- 8:01Obviously we're in a time right now where there's lots of things
- 8:04happening in our nation, no matter where you're at.
- 8:07I'm getting asked to do a lot of events and people are like, how
- 8:09are you going to make sure those people really need it?
- 8:10I'm not. We're just going to put food on
- 8:12the table and not ask any questions.
- 8:15And so some people are like, if you can't get over that, you're
- 8:16not going to be, you're not going to be happy because you
- 8:18will get taken advantage of. But I think for me, realizing
- 8:22that I, I'm nothing, God's doing everything and God's providing
- 8:25the food and God's going to provide the people that are
- 8:27going to show up. Even when I put meat in the food
- 8:29pantry, God has ordained that place, that food pantry for me
- 8:32to put meat in. And he's going to pick the
- 8:34people that are going to come in there.
- 8:35And it's nothing. It has nothing to do with me.
- 8:37And I think until you get to that spot, like you're going to
- 8:40have struggles. But I got to that point where I
- 8:43started doing it and I realized this is my passion, this is my
- 8:46life goal, this is my legacy. Yeah, and but the thing about
- 8:51that is once you do your part, if the other person that comes
- 8:55and get it, if they for the wrong motive, that's between
- 8:59them and God, not you. And one thing I like about you
- 9:03is a lot of people that feed people like homeless and stuff
- 9:09like that, they'll force them to sit down, try to preach to them
- 9:13and all that before they feed them knowing they hungry.
- 9:17So they they feel handcuffed that they got to sit down and
- 9:21get religion forced on them. But you do the reverse where you
- 9:25just feed them and they know you're a pastor.
- 9:28They'll come to you and say, hey, because you touched their
- 9:31heart and did something that other people wouldn't do.
- 9:34And I love that you do that. That's what like the smoking
- 9:39pastor project came about from that like obviously I'm a
- 9:41pastor. I love to barbecue, love to
- 9:42smoke. Like we just left it simple.
- 9:44So it's that been that catchy fun thing on especially on
- 9:46social media. People are like what you smoking
- 9:48pastor? And I'm like, let me tell you.
- 9:50And what it's been fun is we don't like you're 100% right.
- 9:54We'll do these big events. We'll feed 1000 people in a
- 9:57month and be like, hey, like we never people are people, the
- 10:00church people a lot of hate on me.
- 10:02You don't get out there and preach and you take it, man, you
- 10:04should. You don't know the conversations
- 10:06that happen in the background or you don't know the phone calls I
- 10:09get late at night from somebody that got fed and wasn't willing
- 10:13to open up at that point. But they're like, hey, I know a
- 10:15pastor that truly just loves me for who I am.
- 10:18And then they reach out. And so there's tons of after
- 10:21stories that I mean, we, it would take hours to be able to
- 10:23share those with you. These all I can do is cast seeds
- 10:28out there and somebody else may water them, somebody else may
- 10:31harvest them, but I'm just throwing seeds everywhere I go.
- 10:33Because you don't know how they touch their light.
- 10:35They don't know where that next meal is coming from.
- 10:37And you feel that need. And it may change their life
- 10:41forever. And you may be out there to try
- 10:43to fix the spiritual need, but until you can fix that physical
- 10:45need, that spiritual need is the least of their worries at that
- 10:48moment. Because if I don't, if I don't
- 10:50have a meal and I don't know where the meal coming from, I'm
- 10:53not going to be receiving Christ and I'm going to take it the
- 10:56wrong way that you trying to force it on me to give me a
- 10:59meal. So Yep, exactly.
- 11:01You're doing things right. Tell me a little bit about the
- 11:03Free Food Fridays. Yeah, so that's how a lot of
- 11:08this popped up is while I was trying to work a full time job,
- 11:11while I was trying to do these events.
- 11:12Like I was just getting tired, man.
- 11:14You know how it is you work a full time job and then you have
- 11:16this side hustle. Basically, I'm not making money.
- 11:19I'm trying to just put meat on food tables.
- 11:21So what we decided is like before the, and this was way
- 11:23before the the food pantry stuff of us trying to do fully cooked
- 11:27pre packaged meat, we said, we're just going to do free food
- 11:30Fridays, one month, one week. It's probably going to be like a
- 11:32civil service thing. So we've done a lot of fire
- 11:34stations, a lot of police stations, a lot of nursing
- 11:36homes, healthcare workers, like any of those kind of people,
- 11:38somebody that's out there, teachers, lots of schools.
- 11:41And then one week we're just going to go hand out random acts
- 11:44of kindness, like to people on the street and they may need it,
- 11:48they may not need it, but we're just going to hand out food.
- 11:51And so we started doing that. And so that's taking off.
- 11:53And then in this time now, even though my focus is gone from
- 11:57events, I'm planning 2 free Food Fridays this Friday because this
- 12:01it's still the heart of what we're doing.
- 12:03When you hand somebody a plate who's had a rough week and who
- 12:06maybe didn't know where the next meal was coming out coming from,
- 12:11what does it do to you when you see they face and see how they
- 12:15light up just because the act of kindness?
- 12:19And that's just what changes the heart, man.
- 12:21It doesn't get old. And that that goes from it being
- 12:23a homeless person on the street to a person that you know can
- 12:26afford the food is still that the act of food crosses all
- 12:31barriers. And seeing that smile of whether
- 12:34they're physically starving to death or they just haven't had
- 12:37anybody love on them in a long time, and they may be wealthy.
- 12:41It's the act of kindness that only Jesus can do because Jesus
- 12:44is changing that heart to that warm food.
- 12:46Yeah, but I will say there is nothing else like being in a
- 12:49cold spot and handing out food to somebody that's truly cold
- 12:52and hungry. And we can at least fix one of
- 12:54those. You're not just feeding people's
- 12:56stomachs, you're feeding dignity.
- 12:58How do you think BBQ gives people hope in ways words can't
- 13:02sometime? Yeah, and that's something that
- 13:05we pride ourselves on. There's not much I say I have
- 13:07pride on, but we offer our best quality food to everybody.
- 13:11I had to leave the date is write an article about something we're
- 13:13doing and she's. You mean you just put brisket in
- 13:16the food pantry? I'm like, heck yeah.
- 13:17And she's. Wait a minute, didn't brisket
- 13:19like 699 a pound right now? I'm like, Yep.
- 13:21And I spent 24 hours cooking it and I put $20 a seat to go
- 13:24through the whole thing. And she's nobody else does that.
- 13:27I said, exactly. That's what sets us apart from
- 13:29anybody else. We're offering our best.
- 13:32SO obviously, as this nonprofit is growing, I've had to figure
- 13:34out how how to bring money in to keep this thing going.
- 13:37And so we do a little bit of catering and we do some high end
- 13:40catering. And what I can tell people is
- 13:42you may be at that fancy bougie gala, and I want you to know
- 13:45that same food I'm giving you on a plate that you're paying a
- 13:48budget for, I'm putting that same meat in a food pantry.
- 13:52Yeah. We offer people our best.
- 13:53Everybody is our neighbor. That's the another problem with
- 13:58food pantries because most people give away stuff that's
- 14:02laying in a cabinet that they don't want, stuff that's
- 14:05expired. Instead of bringing something
- 14:07that they would eat, they're giving people anything, which is
- 14:12a bad representation because you might as well not do it at all
- 14:15if you giving somebody's trash because you it's pretty much
- 14:19just looking down on people. Yep, well, that's what and
- 14:22that's where this meat thing has really taken hold now of man, if
- 14:25I could just tell you stories of the and not knocking any
- 14:28company, big name companies that you would know, man, like I'll
- 14:32go in a food pantry and it'll look like perforated dog meats.
- 14:34What they're sending these food pantries and expecting them to
- 14:37do something with it. Like it's let alone that they're
- 14:40going to maybe not have the means to cook it and not know
- 14:43how to cook it. But now they got to cook
- 14:44something that I wouldn't even touch.
- 14:46What do you feed to my dog? Like that is the, that's what we
- 14:50think of people. Like that's horrible.
- 14:53And that's really why people ask why does it have to be cooked
- 14:56meat? I can make sure I'm putting a
- 14:57quality product on the table and somebody don't have to think
- 15:00about cooking it. We talked a lot today about
- 15:03we're moving into a little bit of like full meal prep and
- 15:05people are like, why are you getting that full meal prep?
- 15:07If you get a person off the street that's homeless, they're
- 15:10moving into being given a job. The first debate they have
- 15:14actually the second debate, the number one is they got to have
- 15:16clothes to wear to work. Number 2 is how they're going to
- 15:18for lunch every day. And so if we can do those kind
- 15:22of things and take that stress off them, then they're truly
- 15:25having a rebound time of getting back on their feet.
- 15:28That'll motivate them to try to succeed because just giving them
- 15:33a piece of meal really ain't doing anything for them because
- 15:36vegetables and all this other stuff that that goes with it, it
- 15:40means a lot that people have a whole meal and not trying to
- 15:45like a lot of people would give them a little portion instead of
- 15:48letting people eat and and to their full enjoy themselves and
- 15:53be satisfied. Because at the moment with a lot
- 15:56of people going through, they need little small things that
- 16:00bring joy to them to let them know that people care.
- 16:04Let them know that hey, I can make it.
- 16:07And by you coming there with your positive attitude and them
- 16:12getting stuff like brisket, most of them probably haven't had
- 16:16real brisket, not no Texas brisket for sure.
- 16:20Last time they had ribs or anything like that.
- 16:23And it makes them feel special and not just having hot dogs or
- 16:29anything that's just thrown together because it's easy to
- 16:33take the easy way out. But what you're doing, it takes
- 16:38time to prep that. You got to put a lot of time
- 16:41into cooking it, the sides and everything like that.
- 16:44And I'm pretty sure you still work a full time job besides
- 16:47doing this. And that's what I still get.
- 16:50Amazing. The comment you just made, like
- 16:51people don't understand the quality part.
- 16:54Like we were cooking that thing for the WNBA.
- 16:56When WNBA was here in Indy last year, they did a lot of like
- 17:01girls skills camps, underprivileged girls skills
- 17:03camp. So I went and fed all the girls
- 17:05and I miss Sheila, what's her name?
- 17:07Miss Chantelle Anderson, big NBA player WNBA.
- 17:09She's I'm 6 Ford, that girl, I came to her shoulder.
- 17:12I don't know how tall she is. She tall, but she came by and
- 17:16she's like, wait a minute, I thought you were just serving
- 17:17grilled cheese. And she's like, when we do
- 17:19grilled cheese, we're doing Texas toast.
- 17:20We're doing three kinds of cheese.
- 17:21I'm putting either pulled pork, brisket or chicken on that BBQ
- 17:25sauce like garlic butter. We're layering that thing up.
- 17:28She's I want one of those. I can't believe this is what the
- 17:31quality of what you're giving away for free.
- 17:32She goes, I serve downtown on Skid Row.
- 17:35Every now and then I see that stuff.
- 17:37And that's not what's being served in my homeless community.
- 17:39And I'm like, yeah, that's what God has allowed us to do through
- 17:42awesome sponsors and donors. That's how we're able to do what
- 17:44we're we're doing. And she's so we still stay in
- 17:47contact. All because of grilled cheese
- 17:48sandwich. That's excellent.
- 17:52Let's talk about the trailer being stolen and when that
- 17:55happened, how what was your reaction?
- 17:57Would you like God? Why me?
- 17:59Or did you know this would might have been part of the plan to
- 18:03see handle it or I can't. Even it almost is like one of
- 18:08those like PTSD blackout moments still for me of I was at an
- 18:13event. So the trailer was parked at our
- 18:16church, which is like right on a highway, but very secure spot.
- 18:21Not in a bad part of town even not great, but not bad.
- 18:24And I was doing an event and all of a sudden I just looked up and
- 18:27I think I just I was with our youth pastor and I just start
- 18:30crying. He's what is wrong.
- 18:31I was like, my trailer is gone and I'm just, I was just broken,
- 18:36just totally broken. And I think for weeks I thought
- 18:40the trailer was going to come back.
- 18:41They ended up finding the trailer all chopped up.
- 18:42State trooper called me late one night and he's, dude, we've all
- 18:45drew straws. Nobody wanted to call you.
- 18:47Nobody wanted to call you. And I had to go identify, check
- 18:51the numbers, go to the impound lot and the trailer sitting like
- 18:54totally sideways, all of it stripped out, nothing left
- 18:56inside. And the guys, do you want this?
- 18:59I was like, no, I don't want this.
- 19:00It's not worth anything to me. And honestly, like I was really
- 19:04at a moment, I was not in a good spot spiritually or mentally at
- 19:07that point. And it took some weeks to figure
- 19:09out. OK, God, like I know you are in
- 19:12control. I don't understand this.
- 19:14But I also know that if it's my will, the trailer would be, we'd
- 19:18be rolling in it right now. So this has got to be your will.
- 19:21And I don't understand it, but I'm in it.
- 19:23And I think that was the day when everything changed for me.
- 19:26OK, God, like I'm not chasing, I'm not chasing my dream.
- 19:29I've said a lot that I think for a little while, both in ministry
- 19:32over 20 years and in this that I was chasing a platform, not
- 19:36obedience. Like there's been a lot of times
- 19:39where I'm like, man, I'm just chasing, I'm chasing that 100K
- 19:41followers or I'm chasing that whatever.
- 19:44And all of a sudden it was like one day I was just like,
- 19:46alright, God, like this is your plan.
- 19:48I just didn't along for the ride.
- 19:49Take me where you want to go. And since then it's been like no
- 19:52regrets and the food haven't thought about the trailer a
- 19:55bunch like stuff like this brings it up and I'm like, yeah,
- 19:57we had it. It's gone like no big deal now,
- 20:00but there for a while it was bad.
- 20:02And I think now seeing how that. Trailer allowed me to get to a
- 20:09step, but also built some networking things that I needed.
- 20:13And now I'm still the guy that let us use that trailer.
- 20:16I'm still really good friends with him.
- 20:18Think about that. That dude loaned us a trailer
- 20:21that we were going to pay off in five years.
- 20:22Didn't give him a dime. I lost his trailer and we're
- 20:25still buddies. That's the only God.
- 20:27And from what I heard, I think I heard on another podcast, that
- 20:30you went and bought all the supplies again after that
- 20:34happened with your own money. With my own money.
- 20:38So my wife and I probably today we always laugh because I don't
- 20:41do money well of as far as I'm spend our money.
- 20:44So I think we're probably we took, we probably spent about 25
- 20:46grand of our money to get just aware back where I could do what
- 20:50I needed to do. And so we luckily only had one
- 20:54small smoker in there and some warmers and we lost a lot of
- 20:57knives, a lot of equipment, stuff like base model stuff.
- 21:01So it's doing that and then trying to get to that next
- 21:03level. We've obviously had to buy more
- 21:04and more equipment, but we still are probably 40% funded by the
- 21:11public and 60% by us personally. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 21:16That's a. Pastor's salary y'all.
- 21:20And after that, haven't you entered a BBQ competition and
- 21:23won the People's champion? What did that mean?
- 21:25Lost everything. That was pretty cool.
- 21:28That was the that was one of the moments where it was like, all
- 21:31right. And God really showed that that
- 21:33day that man, there's part of this that I think at some point,
- 21:37I still see a little bit of this every day of, Hey, you're going
- 21:41to have fun doing this and I want you to pastor these BBQ
- 21:43people. And so that was the day that
- 21:46like that turn, it turned from like I say, a job.
- 21:49Some of this has been felt like a job.
- 21:51Some of it I'm not great at a lot of the scheduling stuff.
- 21:53So it's felt like work. That was the day where this is a
- 21:56passion and a joy and it brings gives me more joy than anything
- 21:58else in life. Yeah, definitely.
- 22:01Because like you said, speaking to the BBQ people, just because
- 22:06you're out there with the BBQ people, you don't have to do
- 22:09what they do. You can have fun without
- 22:11drinking, you can have fun without being around cigarettes
- 22:14and all that other stuff and not feel awkward or anything.
- 22:18But a lot of people admire that you have that restraint and they
- 22:23actually look up to you and you'll see a lot of them come to
- 22:26you for real life advice. And it means a lot because a lot
- 22:31of what women don't know is when guys get around each other,
- 22:34they're, we actually talk to each other and tell what's going
- 22:38on truly with each other because we don't have to feel like we're
- 22:43being judged sometimes. And a lot of us go through the
- 22:47same thing. And like you say, R sharpens R.
- 22:50And so when we get around each other, it it helps sharpen each
- 22:55other and motivate each other and it changes lives.
- 22:59Tell me about the partnership that you had with Helping His
- 23:02Hands. How did that come about?
- 23:05That actually started, I met through a mutual friend, I met a
- 23:09guy named Ryan. And so they do disaster relief,
- 23:12big time disaster relief. So any big disaster and
- 23:16especially East Coast or Midwest, they are the
- 23:19predominant big leader in that. And so I met him through a
- 23:22friend and he told me one day, what do you need to get this
- 23:26thing off the ground? That's when I was trying to
- 23:28figure out a trailer. I was like, man, I really feel
- 23:29like I'm just have a trailer do these events and he just so
- 23:31happens we have 1. So it started with a trailer
- 23:34discussion, but what we didn't know is that by me going to look
- 23:39at the trailer, I ended up going and doing my first free Friday
- 23:42food event. I went and fed a bunch of
- 23:44prisoners that were on a work release stocking a food pantry
- 23:47at their facility and I fed those guys food and that's where
- 23:52a lot of this just really took off.
- 23:54I was like man, this was so much joy, so much fun.
- 23:56I drove 2 1/2 hours to do this event and the whole way back I
- 24:00just called my wife and I was like, I want to do this every
- 24:02day for the rest of my life. This is what we're supposed to
- 24:05be doing. And so that friendship really
- 24:08evolved, evolved into that dude was with me at that first BBQ
- 24:11competition. He's been with me at 3 BBQ
- 24:13competitions since then. I've went and fed their whole
- 24:16town had a huge tornado came through and they had a bunch of
- 24:19people come do all the cleanup. We went and fed everybody.
- 24:22I've done a fundraiser for them. Like it's just been a great
- 24:25friendship and partnership with them.
- 24:28That's excellent. And plus when y'all going to
- 24:30feed prisoners it it, you never know how that changes their
- 24:34lives because most people going to be standoffish because oh
- 24:38you're in jail and all that and some of them need a second
- 24:42chance. Some of them made mistakes and
- 24:45they learned a lesson. So being able to be treated like
- 24:51that and a decent meal, it goes a long way with them.
- 24:56You do fundraisers, you sell your own sauces and rubs,
- 24:59building from the ashes. When people donate, volunteer,
- 25:02or even just share your posts, does that feel like God's way of
- 25:06saying keep going? I got you.
- 25:08The sauce and seasoning, like I always say, I'm not in the sauce
- 25:11and seasoning world. I love it, but it's what it's
- 25:13done has been, it's been a, it's been, I say a business card that
- 25:16opens doors. And so a lot of times you can
- 25:18make it somebody's day to always almost, you all see me out in
- 25:22public. Usually I have sauce and
- 25:23seasoning in my truck and I love giving it away because what that
- 25:26does that just shares a little bit of hope and it shares who
- 25:29what we're trying to do. So on all my seasoning bottles
- 25:32has a QR code that tells the story of what we're doing at the
- 25:35nonprofit. And so people get that QR code
- 25:36that scan it, they're like, hey, we need to find out all about
- 25:39the smoking faster project and what you're doing.
- 25:41So I love that part. But the videos and stuff has
- 25:45been pretty cool of especially like on Tik, Tik Tok's been, I
- 25:48tell creators, you got to find your platform.
- 25:50Tik Tok's been my platform. We do a lot on TikTok.
- 25:53But what it's found is TikTok has been for as good as it's
- 25:55been for me as a non profit, as a creator, it's been good for me
- 26:00mentally because there's a whole BBQ world on TikTok that has
- 26:02just blown up, especially in the last little bit.
- 26:06And at any given time, I do a lot of lives and they'll be some
- 26:09big name people in those lives. And you just realize that these
- 26:13dudes that we look up to in the BBQ world, man, they're just
- 26:16normal people and they have a passion for BBQ, but they also
- 26:18have a passion for people. I've been getting connected real
- 26:21close with Tyrone Matthews from he was on Netflix.
- 26:24So me and him, I've gotten close just we've exchanged cell phone
- 26:27numbers, had a couple calls now and like I always looked up to
- 26:30that dude now. I mean, we're talking about
- 26:31doing an event together. That's what the BBQ community is
- 26:34all about. And just like you said, doing
- 26:37this, I've ran across people I'd never thought I'd have or have
- 26:42met and numbers in my phone where I'm like, I've seen these
- 26:46folks on TV. It's ridiculous to support, like
- 26:50you say, TikTok. I wasn't really big in the
- 26:52TikTok. I actually started this in June
- 26:55and I was on the fence about it. And I went to Memphis and May
- 27:00and made some connections there and I'm like, OK, I got to get
- 27:04this started. So I started in June and all the
- 27:08way up to now, it's like so many people had came on to do
- 27:12interviews and it's like amazing.
- 27:15Because you would think that why would you come over here and
- 27:19talk to me? And guys say, why not?
- 27:22Why not? Because you got to you even
- 27:24though you're not out there all the time with them, but you have
- 27:28an angle that's different from everybody else.
- 27:30And if you do, like I told you to, everything go as planned.
- 27:35And I try to show people how important these people I'm
- 27:41bringing on are and try to promote like a promote what you
- 27:45do, promote what others do to show that it is.
- 27:49There's a whole bunch of avenues for people.
- 27:53There's not just one lane when it comes to barbecue.
- 27:55There's a whole Expressway. If you choose to do like you do
- 28:00or if you choose to do a restaurant or season rub or
- 28:03anything like that, it you don't have to do what everybody else
- 28:07is doing. God going to give you your own
- 28:10lane and when he blesses that nobody else can do anything, do
- 28:14that. So what you're doing, people
- 28:18might think you're giving away, but on the flip side, you
- 28:22setting yourself up for later in life because God got you for the
- 28:26hard work that you're going to do what you're doing now.
- 28:29And then and not, it's not even about that.
- 28:31It's that you're building a lot. So my oldest son, I have an 18
- 28:34year old senior in high school. He's wanting to do culinary.
- 28:37And the other day he was like, dad, like what he's you're doing
- 28:40the hard work for me. What if God's plan is you're
- 28:42building this platform and I get to run with it?
- 28:44I'm like, yeah, what about that? That's what hit you right here.
- 28:48When you're here, you can't understand that and yet you're
- 28:50actually influence on them and it's it's I don't even know what
- 28:57to say right there that's. And that's what's been funny and
- 29:02what's been fun is like watching my kids world be changed like
- 29:06all because of TikTok because all their friends follow me and
- 29:10then on set. So we do if you follow us, we do
- 29:13a Sunday Night Live cooking shows.
- 29:14Usually we have a lot of people that watch our cooking stuff on
- 29:17Sunday nights. Now all my friends, all my kids
- 29:20friends, they want to come over to our house on Sunday night
- 29:21because they know the smoking pastor and his wife are cooking
- 29:23and they know they're going to get that food.
- 29:26And so our house has been this hot spot now and these kids,
- 29:29we're in a town where all the all their friends, way nicer
- 29:32houses, way bigger places, way better stuff.
- 29:35They come to our house and they're like, Hey, we want to
- 29:37come there because we're welcomed.
- 29:38We have fun, we get fed and we just get a laugh with the with
- 29:42Jordan and Katie spoken pastor and Katie.
- 29:44And it's been fun to watch. Like my kids realize like what
- 29:48God has done has impacted their lives just as much too.
- 29:51Let's talk about it a little bit about your rub and your sauces.
- 29:55Explain a little bit about them so people can know your.
- 29:57Products so we got a sweet rub really good on pork and chicken.
- 30:01That's just called everything we have is stuff.
- 30:03So I'm pretty, pretty generic sweet stuff.
- 30:06We have a saucy stuff, but our big thing is our Peach BBQ
- 30:09sauce. And actually I am like I have
- 30:11one bottle later in here somewhere.
- 30:12We're totally out and we actually just redid our Peach
- 30:14sauce. We it will be hitting the stores
- 30:17in about 10 days with a brand new addition.
- 30:19So we switch from a Peach extract to a Peach pureed
- 30:22Peaches. So I'm pumped because I just, I
- 30:26literally right before we got on here, I had four chicken legs
- 30:28with this new sauce because they sent me a sample bottle and I
- 30:30can't put it down. It's so good.
- 30:32But what we say is it's not about the sauce and rub.
- 30:35We don't even list the stuff we've been having out.
- 30:37We don't even make like we just been white label and stuff.
- 30:40We just found products that we were able to be, we were able to
- 30:42do what we wanted with, but for us, it's all about getting in.
- 30:46So God had opened that door. We're in Ace Hardwares, we're in
- 30:49some butcher shops, we're in some local stores.
- 30:52And what's turned into is it's gave us a voice in those worlds.
- 30:56So we first started putting stuff in Ace Hardware now like I
- 31:00am the brand spokesman for all our local Ace stuff.
- 31:04I just filmed Turkey videos tonight for them five things not
- 31:07to do this Turkey season. And So what that's done is it's
- 31:11they Ace Hardware now has uplifted this brand smoking
- 31:14pastor project. What they don't know is what
- 31:17that it's doing is it's putting that nonprofit brand out there
- 31:19so much. And so that's been just a
- 31:22blessing of the sauce and seasonings.
- 31:24And I didn't think I was going to be do it very long.
- 31:26I thought it was just going to be a short run just to get our
- 31:28name out there. But people trust what we put
- 31:30out. So that's why we're trying to
- 31:31amp up switching Co Packers, switching who we're doing stuff
- 31:35with and just trying to put out the best product.
- 31:36Obviously, because we're putting out the best food, want to be
- 31:39putting out that best product. And so I think there's also that
- 31:41thing of a lot of the guys on the in the BBQ world, if they're
- 31:45going to buy a base pork or chicken rub, why not buy it from
- 31:48us? So what happens is I have a
- 31:49donor that buys all of this for us.
- 31:53So every dollar goes to the nonprofit.
- 31:56So if you're going to buy a chicken rub, you're spending 10
- 31:59bucks, $10 goes a nonprofit that's going to put 3 lbs of
- 32:02meat and food pantries. So every bottle has a story is
- 32:05what I'm trying to start really promoting is I didn't think I
- 32:07was going to run with this, but I think it's something cool.
- 32:09And obviously like we haven't talked about, but I just quit my
- 32:13job. I just resigned, have till March
- 32:16to figure out how we're going to boost this nonprofit world where
- 32:20one somehow I'm going to get paid.
- 32:22I don't even know. I don't even care at this point.
- 32:24We're going to keep putting meat in food pantries.
- 32:25Me is the last thing, but if the sauce and seasoning can help do
- 32:29that, then then we're going to run with it.
- 32:32And so we're going to try to build a brand and who knows,
- 32:34smoking pastor brand, there could be smoking pastors.
- 32:37And my goal is to have smoking pastors everywhere that are just
- 32:40people that are smoking meat and putting in food pantries.
- 32:43And then we can keep that brand the same, the quality of the
- 32:46same by putting that same sauce and that same seasoning, no
- 32:48matter a nationwide thing. Because then if it gets so big
- 32:52and you've got a, if one day you've got a cope, you've got a
- 32:54packing facility, FDA packing facility that we're helping pay
- 32:58for. We're paying you to pack meat.
- 32:59We know that every pork, every chicken, every brisket is going
- 33:03to taste the same based on our sauce and seasoning.
- 33:04So it's a, it's something that I'm realizing like maybe part of
- 33:07this model that's growing. Yeah, and the more you talk
- 33:11about it, the more you inspire other people that may be on the
- 33:14fence about doing it. And also they'll reach out to
- 33:18you and OK, can you give me some tips on how you doing this or
- 33:22how you doing that? And it it that that's your new
- 33:26ministry. So yeah, God got you.
- 33:29I know, I know what you do. I love the fact that we were
- 33:33talking to guy today is the what's this guy grand old oaks
- 33:36BBQ Guy sent me a rub. I get rubs and sauces sent all
- 33:39the time for me to do reviews or me to try this dude.
- 33:42This stuff is amazing. And I was talking to him.
- 33:44I said there's so many family secrets.
- 33:47Everybody's bought into these big name BBQ brands, which is
- 33:50great. But like where's those old
- 33:52school family secrets? Get that stuff out there.
- 33:54Tell your family story. I don't know if you follow like
- 33:57there's a mustard company, Kozutsky that we're all a bunch
- 33:59of guys are on right now. That's a that's I forget what
- 34:021977 I think is when they started creating their first
- 34:05mustard. That's a legacy that can be
- 34:07carried on in the BBQ world. Can be Kennedy BBQ sauce.
- 34:10That's a great dude I was just on the phone with a little bit
- 34:13ago. Is getting this a family secret
- 34:16out? Tell every sauce, every rub.
- 34:19Can have a story. Let's tell those stories.
- 34:21And that's another reason why I do this, to shine the light on
- 34:24people that don't get that exposure like other people.
- 34:28We hear about all the other brands, but there's so many
- 34:31brands out there and people deserve a chance to show their
- 34:35product and what they have because they're just as good as
- 34:38the other products out there, some even better.
- 34:41But I was. Going to say, let's be honest,
- 34:43man, a lot of this small batch stuff is way better.
- 34:46And you it's sad that it's such a, if you'd say cutthroat world
- 34:50of trying to get on a shelf. Like it took me a while to get
- 34:54on a shelf and then I got on one shelf and it to get to the next
- 34:57shelf I thought was going to be easier.
- 34:58No, it's just as much work to get on that second shelf.
- 35:01And so people aren't, they're losing that battle and they just
- 35:03get frustrated and what they got a great product.
- 35:05They just don't have, they're just don't know how to market
- 35:07the story. So I love picking up people
- 35:10sending me stuff and being able to do a 2 minute video and say,
- 35:13hey, go check out this company. They're amazing.
- 35:16And you're using your platform to help somebody else and then
- 35:19somebody use their platform to help you.
- 35:21And just playing it forward, it means a lot to people where,
- 35:25like I said, I don't have followers like some of the big
- 35:28time people. But I want to bring people on
- 35:31because you never know where I'm going to be in the next 3-4,
- 35:34five years, but I want to then people start seeing it and
- 35:40recognizing it and trying different products that are
- 35:45outside the store and even know that, OK, a lot of people might
- 35:49not know Ace have a awesome BBQ section.
- 35:53And I say a lot of times, like no matter how big you are, like
- 35:58if I can help you and then you can help me, we're both building
- 36:01together. But also if you've got 10,000
- 36:04followers and I have 10,000 followers, your 10,000 aren't my
- 36:0610,000. So I'm building a huge network
- 36:08with you and you're getting a huge network for me.
- 36:11And all of a sudden we're both growing and organically and
- 36:14we're reaching different populations than we can reach on
- 36:16our own. And so if you can partner with
- 36:17one of these companies, even if they're way bigger than you or,
- 36:20or for me, like I've been blessed that I'm, I've got to a
- 36:23point where there's some of the guys I'm, I am bigger than.
- 36:25I don't want to just take off and run.
- 36:27I want to help them get a hand up from and take them with me.
- 36:30Like, how can we grow together? Not how can I run faster than
- 36:34you? Exactly, And if, like I said, if
- 36:37I have 10,000 followers and I'm not touching nobody and changing
- 36:41their lives, it means nothing as well as it if every episode that
- 36:47I bring out, you know who the person that I bring on, I'm
- 36:51doing something wrong because I want people that you haven't
- 36:54heard of that in a small town that's trying to get their
- 36:59product out or showcase what they're doing in their city.
- 37:04There's so many people like I interviewed one guy, he's a
- 37:06griller, but he has one arm. I told him to come on, tell your
- 37:10story, tell what happened, tell how you still are barbecuing and
- 37:16despite what happened and motivate other people with
- 37:21disabilities to show that, OK, this doesn't stop what I'm doing
- 37:26because fire within me and I love barbecue and my craft so
- 37:30much that I'm going to keep trying.
- 37:32And yeah, that's what I'm trying to do out there.
- 37:36And that goes back to what you said, like I just, I think
- 37:40people need to hear that if you're trying to grow on social
- 37:44media, you're not the one growing.
- 37:45It's the people that are around you or who's grown you.
- 37:47We were blessed. We hit 10,000 on TikTok pretty
- 37:50quick. It wasn't because anything I
- 37:52did, it was because there's a whole bunch of people that grew
- 37:54that surrounded me and realized what we were doing.
- 37:57They're like, we want to promote you.
- 37:58So I'd pop in rooms and these big name guys are like, oh,
- 38:01smoke of pastures in the room. Everybody go follow him.
- 38:03That it wasn't anything I did. It wasn't that much content
- 38:06sucks. Like it's not that great.
- 38:08It's that these people bought into, not me.
- 38:11They bought into what we're they're doing, which is really
- 38:13they're buying into God. They just don't know it.
- 38:16Your kids, you got one. I got 3.
- 38:19Boys, man. Oh wow, what's the ages?
- 38:221815 and 9. Oh wow I got 2 girls.
- 38:26I got 18 months and 9 year old and I'm 49.
- 38:32Oh, bless your brother. I just got married two years
- 38:36ago, so. Oh yeah.
- 38:38Man, it's a ride. Man, it's a ride.
- 38:40Yeah, it was pretty much my life was work, home, church, work,
- 38:43home, church, work, home, church.
- 38:45And then I finally got married and life is just totally
- 38:50different then because having that partner to push and
- 38:56motivate you and tell you can do it and rub you on your back and
- 39:00know how you operate when you're frustrated and stuff like that,
- 39:05it makes the world a difference. Where there was time for the
- 39:08first 48 years while by myself and I was just there myself
- 39:14trying to figure out, OK, am I going to do this?
- 39:17I'm going to compete, am I going to do this?
- 39:19And I'm on the fence about doing everything.
- 39:21And when she came along, it's like everything just changed and
- 39:26the momentum hit and it was so wonderful.
- 39:30So Speaking of that, let's talk about your wife, Katie, because
- 39:32we're going to give her a prop behind every pitmaster with a
- 39:35vision of somebody holding the line when things get tough.
- 39:38What role has she played in keeping this dream alive?
- 39:42Oh. Man, she's all of it.
- 39:44This was definitely, I feel, I always say I feel bad a lot of
- 39:47times. She works a full time job.
- 39:49She's got so much going on and so she doesn't get to be a part
- 39:53of a lot of stuff, but she's as much as the founder of Smoking
- 39:55Pastor Project as I am. Our our goals.
- 39:58It's so funny, but we met actually in a college class and
- 40:01we were laying out a timeline of ministry long term and both of
- 40:05us were just on the same page. So as we got married, our goal
- 40:08has always been to run a non profit.
- 40:10We thought it was going to be like a bed and breakfast to get
- 40:13like pastors to rehab or recoup and rest.
- 40:16And what's turned into is OK, even if that.
- 40:19So if this is the plan, if it's shifted and this is the plan.
- 40:23Could the BBQ nonprofit eventually help fund the bed and
- 40:27breakfast? Who knows.
- 40:29But it's just been like that dream of us, us doing something
- 40:33together forever has always been part of the dream.
- 40:36And so it's so fun just watching day-to-day.
- 40:38Even today we were just like, man, someday.
- 40:40Because I'm not a detailed person.
- 40:42Like I don't write anything down.
- 40:44I don't write, have a calendar. I literally like people laugh,
- 40:47but I tell the story all the time, like the way I do my day.
- 40:50So I remember this. Today is all Google today's date
- 40:53on my like calendars or on my emails and realize what I said
- 40:57yes to. That's how bad I am.
- 40:58My wife for years has been an admin to VPS at corporate level
- 41:02like she's the most detailed person in the world and she's
- 41:05you frustrate me so much I said, but I need you.
- 41:09So we've talked so much about how someday she'll be able to
- 41:12help more and give up that full time job and our goal.
- 41:15Obviously smoking packs are so big that multiple employees.
- 41:18That person behind you is like I said, numerous time on this show
- 41:23that my wife is just as much as BBQ therapy as I am.
- 41:28Because right now, while I'm down here, she's up there with
- 41:32the kids. And it's, it's just as important
- 41:36as what I'm doing down here because she's allowing me to
- 41:39reach other people and she don't have to, but she's, she wants
- 41:44to. And she's supported my dream
- 41:46like I support hers and just working with each other and
- 41:52ministering to each other, encouraging each other and
- 41:55praying for each other. All that it means a lot because
- 41:59if you don't have that person supporting you.
- 42:01And just like when the your trailer got stolen, if she would
- 42:06have came on, I told you, that's why I told you not to do that.
- 42:09Listen, that that would have broke your momentum even worse
- 42:12than what you were feeling at that time.
- 42:14But I guarantee you, she was like, hey, I'm sorry this
- 42:18happened. We're going to get them next
- 42:20time. We're not going to give up.
- 42:21And that motivation means a lot coming from the person that, you
- 42:25know, the only person that really.
- 42:27Yeah, that's there for you. Yeah.
- 42:30And we talk about too, she's as much of the brand as me man.
- 42:33Shoot, I can put out videos all week long and add up all the
- 42:36views. And when she does a live with me
- 42:38on Sunday night we get more views cuz she's there.
- 42:41That's what I love. But I think it also shows what
- 42:46true marriage looks like and true partnership, and we're in
- 42:49it together no matter what. So the good days, bad days, the
- 42:51days where today when I don't know how I got asked to do 150
- 42:55turkeys here in a couple weeks, I don't know how I'm gonna pay
- 42:57for them. We figure it out together.
- 42:58It's not my problem. It's not her problem.
- 43:00We got this because we know God's got us.
- 43:02And so you're able to have that conversation of like, all right,
- 43:05let's be on the same page on this prayer time because we got
- 43:07to figure out how to go buy 150 turkeys and turkeys ain't cheap
- 43:09this year. You fed thousands for free.
- 43:12You lost, rebuilt, and kept that fire burning.
- 43:15What keeps you showing up every morning, even when it's hard?
- 43:19I think just the opportunity of every day, my prayers, my prayer
- 43:22when I leave my house every morning is God expands your
- 43:24territory and let me just be along for the ride.
- 43:27So having that prayer going into it every day of I did a meeting
- 43:31at 1:00 today that walked even on the books this morning.
- 43:33And it probably is gonna do two things.
- 43:36It's gonna I'm gonna be able to stock a food pantry with
- 43:38probably thousands of pounds in the next six weeks.
- 43:42But I also opened up a whole new door of a network that I didn't
- 43:45even know existed. That truly is the least of
- 43:48these. And so just knowing that every
- 43:51day God's going to open some door.
- 43:53It may not be a financial door for us, but it may be an
- 43:56opportunity that I get a walkthrough and it's just a
- 43:58smile on the face of I came home for that meeting today and I got
- 44:00twice as much work. I don't know how we're going to
- 44:02pay for it. I don't know how any of this is
- 44:03going to work out. But I was so excited because I
- 44:06found a group that is getting no government support, no state
- 44:09support, no local support, and they need help and I have the
- 44:14ability to help them. If you could speak directly to
- 44:18the person listening right now, who is tired, maybe questioning
- 44:22their own purpose, what would you say to them?
- 44:25I say you got to fight. So for me, BBQ started at you
- 44:29got to find joy outside your job.
- 44:31What is that for you? If it's not BBQ, If it's not
- 44:34cooking or pastries or whatever that is, what can you physically
- 44:37go out and do that's joy outside your job?
- 44:40And that's where I think a lot of times we're like, man, you
- 44:42got to go find God. Find, no, you got to go find
- 44:45something that's going to bring you joy because that is going to
- 44:47show you who God really is. I'm going to show you how much
- 44:49God loves you and who he wants you to be.
- 44:52And when you find that joy? It means a lot because I had to
- 44:56talk to my wife about that because I I told her she need to
- 44:59find a hobby, something that relaxes her and something
- 45:02sometimes you ain't got to put much thought into it.
- 45:05She talked about my hobby is reading and learning.
- 45:07And I was like, that's not a hobby.
- 45:08You need something to do. And then she realized she got
- 45:13back into tennis because she used to play tennis and now she
- 45:16finds that as a getaway to relax and decompress.
- 45:21And they say everybody got needs to find something that they'll
- 45:25do for free. And like I said, like you, you
- 45:29doing that for free. I'm doing this for free.
- 45:31And it feels good to decompress. And it's therapy, like tennis is
- 45:36hurt. There it really is.
- 45:38You just got to find what's your thing and.
- 45:41Well, I think it all goes back to community too.
- 45:43You're building community through this.
- 45:45She's building private community through tennis.
- 45:46But even if it is, if you are, I'm going to say that nerdy
- 45:50person and that's OK. Like it's booked.
- 45:51But are you doing a book club or are you doing, are you going and
- 45:54reading books together? Like what are you doing to be
- 45:56around people that are like minded, that have same values as
- 46:00you? That's what like for me, I'm
- 46:02able to do that every day. And So what seems like to some
- 46:06is I'm just a workaholic man. I'm just living in my passion.
- 46:09I'm living in my joy. And lastly, what's the next?
- 46:11What's next for the Smoking Pastor Project?
- 46:14What are your dreams for the next few years?
- 46:17Yeah, obviously our goal is to be the largest producer of fully
- 46:19cooked pre packaged meat. And I do have a national goal.
- 46:22My goal right now, like short term, long term, I'm actually
- 46:25writing a grant tonight. I found out an hour ago that I
- 46:28could, I was eligible to write a grant for some money.
- 46:31And so I've been just kind of laying out what's that look
- 46:33like. But in the next 6 months, my
- 46:35goal is to be in 50 food pantries in the next six years.
- 46:37And my goal would be in 500 food pantries.
- 46:40And that's a global. I'd love for it to be global in
- 46:4220 years or 10 years or whatever.
- 46:44God could speed that up. God can slow that down, but our
- 46:47goal is just to be in the moment.
- 46:49If I'm planning an event on Friday, but I have an event
- 46:51tomorrow, then tomorrow is the most important event on the
- 46:54books because I can be in that moment tomorrow.
- 46:57So our whole thing is just, man, we're just riding this way.
- 47:00We don't know what guy's going to do.
- 47:01We don't know how we're going to pay for it.
- 47:03We are. I'm not good at asking for
- 47:04money. And so all of a sudden it's man,
- 47:06I got to get out of my comfort zone.
- 47:07And because it's not me asking for money, it's people are going
- 47:10to be blessed by giving to where we can do the things we're
- 47:13supposed to do. Like I said, got to get you.
- 47:15I'll take care of you. You do your part and you'll do
- 47:20his part. All right, I got a quick game.
- 47:22I'm going to play with you and then I'll get you out of here.
- 47:25But in college basketball, they have a tournament bracket.
- 47:27So what I came up with was a tournament bracket with 16 meats
- 47:30that you cook on the grill. I'm going to read each matchup.
- 47:33Just tell me which one you prefer to eat and we'll see
- 47:35which one is the winner. All right, first matchup, smoked
- 47:39baloney versus hamburger. I just did smoke Bologna.
- 47:43I'm not a fan man. Hamburger.
- 47:46Yeah, too I. Think I made mine too sweet.
- 47:47I got to try it again. I think I made it too sweet.
- 47:50I didn't burn ends. It wasn't good.
- 47:52All right, sausage versus pork chops.
- 47:55Oh pork chops 100%. That's my favorite.
- 47:59All right, Brisket versus a hot dog.
- 48:01Oh. Brisket.
- 48:05Brisket's my love language. All right, pork belly versus
- 48:08smoked ham. Oh, that's a guy.
- 48:11That one right there. That's that's a Sweet 16 man.
- 48:14That ain't no first round man pork belly.
- 48:17OK, beef ribs versus smoked Turkey, Beef ribs, All right,
- 48:25BBQ shrimp versus lamb. Oh.
- 48:29OK. Burnt insurance versus pork
- 48:32ribs. Burnt insurance.
- 48:38OK, steak versus smoked chicken. I'm a smoked chicken van.
- 48:45All right, next round of hamburger versus pork chops,
- 48:49pork chops, all right, and brisket versus, let's see, pork
- 48:55belly, OK, and beef ribs versus lamb, beef ribs, OK and burnt
- 49:06ends versus chicken. And final four, pork chop versus
- 49:10brisket. Pork chop.
- 49:14OK. And beef ribs versus chicken,
- 49:20beef ribs, right? And finals is pork chop versus
- 49:25beef ribs. Man, I judge a good steakhouse
- 49:29by pork chop. Man, I want that big old thick
- 49:31center cut pork chop. That's the way.
- 49:32That's my, that's the way I design.
- 49:34Good BBQ right there to find out.
- 49:36Yeah, a little pork chop. Pork chops, yeah, I'll tell you,
- 49:40ain't no nog. But Turkey man, I've got a you
- 49:42can tell a good BBQ restaurant they can make some smoked
- 49:44Turkey. Yeah, definitely.
- 49:47All right, Pork chops is the winner.
- 49:49All right, Jordan, your therapy session is over.
- 49:52And before you give you a chance to do your shout outs and stuff,
- 49:56I just want to tell everybody out there to definitely check
- 49:59him out, support him. Anything that you can to do help
- 50:03him do it. If you got a box of napkins or
- 50:07forks or anything, you never know what you can do to help.
- 50:11Even if it's straws or anything, plates or anything, if you have
- 50:16anything that can help, even just your time, just definitely
- 50:21reach out to him and support him because he's doing a great thing
- 50:24out there and we want to see it successful.
- 50:28And all those that also have a dream of doing what he's doing.
- 50:31Please reach out to him if you have any questions and he'll
- 50:34walk walk you through how to do everything because he's went
- 50:38through it. So he's going to cut the cost of
- 50:41time by telling you how to do it so you won't make mistakes and
- 50:46go through some of the things he had to go through At this time.
- 50:49If you want to give you a website and plug anything, you
- 50:52can definitely do that. Yeah, go check us out Smoking
- 50:55Pastor project.com and then we're on almost all social media
- 50:58platforms just at Smoking Pastor out all of them.
- 51:01And I would just say, man, BBQ world, nobody's an expert.
- 51:03Everybody's a learner. Ask questions.
- 51:05That's my favorite part, man. Thanks for doing this.
- 51:07That's what it's about. Like it's the therapy part of
- 51:10asking questions, learning from each other.
- 51:12Like I said, ain't nobody an expert in BBQ.
- 51:14Everybody's got their way. To do it, I definitely
- 51:17appreciate you sharing your time, sharing your story and
- 51:19coming on and speaking to the people and tell them what you do
- 51:23and what you're about. And I just definitely wish you
- 51:26the best in everything that you're doing.
- 51:28And I'm gonna definitely keep up with you also follow you and
- 51:32watch you and everything you do. So just keep it up.
- 51:35Your efforts are not going in vain.
- 51:38Thank you. You too man, keep it up.
- 51:40I like this. I'm definitely trying and I'm
- 51:42gonna keep moving and not going to give up.
- 51:44And yeah, just keep reaching as many people as possible.
- 51:50All right, and on a note, everybody, we thank you for
- 51:53watching another episode of BBQ Therapy.
