- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to another episode of Inside the Data
- 0:12on Inside the Birds, and of course I'm Jeff Boscher
- 0:15alongside the data expert, the analytics man, Sam Finkle. What
- 0:19is it that one of our readers once called you
- 0:22analytics guy? Yeah, yeah, a question for the analytics guy
- 0:26when you are the analytics guy, Sam. And we have
- 0:29two more good questions that we've gotten submitted to Inside
- 0:32the Birds at gmail dot com for you. And what
- 0:35I think we're going to do is be able to
- 0:37answer these questions and then sort of turn the page
- 0:40in the next few additions Inside the Data to this
- 0:44year's team because the questions are obviously that we're getting
- 0:47are still from last year and that's great. Won the
- 0:50Super Bowl. People want to relive that. But pretty soon
- 0:52we'll start to formulate some ideas of some good analytical
- 0:56projects for the twenty twenty five Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:59Speaker 2: That sounds like I'm very excited for that for sure. Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Now the Eagles are in the middle of training camp
- 1:04and it's hard right now, right Sam, because you know,
- 1:08it's hard to do analytical stuff until we know exactly
- 1:10who's playing what position and we can concretely say, you
- 1:14know what they might look like in twenty twenty five,
- 1:16but for now, there's some good competition going on. Have
- 1:18you been following.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, and thanks to you and the other people
- 1:23at Inside the Birds, there's some great content and great coverage,
- 1:27so definitely keep looking at that stuff.
- 1:30Speaker 1: All right, good stuff, Thank you, and please continue to
- 1:32submit questions for Sam at inside the Birds at gmail
- 1:37dot com. So, Sam, our first question is about last
- 1:42year and specifically how the Eagles did against top pass rushers. Well,
- 1:48we know the Eagles won the Super Bowl. We know
- 1:49the Eagles had the number one defense, so on the surface,
- 1:52we can probably say they did pretty well. And we
- 1:55also know they had one of the best, if not
- 1:57the best offensive lines in the sport, so we could
- 2:00probably surmise it did pretty well against the top pass rushers.
- 2:03But it is always good to go deeper inside the numbers,
- 2:06right and see exactly how well they did. So I
- 2:11will in a second bring up the screen of the
- 2:14charts that you put together and we will start to
- 2:18take the scalpel and fourceps to it. All right, So
- 2:22this was a little bit subjective, right, and we you
- 2:26and I collaborated and said, well, top ten pass rusher
- 2:29is a very subjective kind of category, so you and
- 2:34I had to pick out some of the best ones.
- 2:36So how did you go about deciding which ones you
- 2:38were going to take too?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean even before that, I think it's important
- 2:43to understand the process that I didn't just look at
- 2:47the offensive line, because you know, these pass rushers didn't
- 2:52always go against the same guys. So when we talked
- 2:56about it, we decided that the best approach was to
- 2:58look at how these pass rushers performed, and we talked
- 3:02about doing win rate, and so I went in PFF
- 3:06and I looked at the win rate, and then I
- 3:08realized they don't have individual game win rates, right, So
- 3:11I had to make an audible on that. Uh, and
- 3:15I decided to just look at how they produced on
- 3:18average throughout the season, and then look at that compared
- 3:22to how they produced versus the Eagles in that one game. Nice,
- 3:27and then to decide who makes the top pass rushers.
- 3:31I looked at who generated the most sacks and who
- 3:34generated the most pressures, and I just picked among that list.
- 3:39There were a couple guys that arguably could have been
- 3:42chosen as well, but I think I have a pretty
- 3:45good mix of you know, ones that are considered the
- 3:49top generational pass rushers right now on the edge, and
- 3:53then a couple a couple of young guys too, So
- 3:56sure it makes sense.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, I know to your point, and we'll get
- 4:02to him in a second. If you go look at
- 4:04the stats per se for Jared Verse, who was a
- 4:07rookie last year, I think he only had a few sacks.
- 4:10Nothing's going to jump out at you're like, oh my god,
- 4:11this is twelve and a half sacks, like Micah Parsons. Guy,
- 4:14But I think you have more sacks in the playoffs
- 4:16right than in the actual regular season. And by the
- 4:20time the playoffs came along, this man had become a force.
- 4:22And I think he's going to be a really good
- 4:24ed rusher and a good player this year coming up.
- 4:27So I believe he is on this list correct.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He is a great example of one of the young
- 4:31guys that i'd You're right, it's going to be a
- 4:34problem for years to come.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah. So let's go through some of the guys that
- 4:38you chose, And obviously we start with Trey Hendrickson of
- 4:43the Bengals, right one of the just annual year in
- 4:47year out top pass rushers in the league. It's sort
- 4:50of amazing that the Bengals haven't figured out how to
- 4:53pay him, considering that he's like literally their only good
- 4:57defensive player. But that's not for a discussion for us.
- 5:01Our discussion is how the Eagles fare against him. And
- 5:05before we get into it, I believe you have it marked. Yeah,
- 5:09this is the game. I believe Fred Johnson had to
- 5:12start at left tackle, I think in place of Jordan
- 5:15Mylotta if I'm.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Not there were a couple games where that happened. Actually,
- 5:23so the Jaguars game that happened and then one of
- 5:28the Cowboys games that happened to I'm not sure if
- 5:31that happened for the Bengals game.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Okay, I thought he had played in the Bengals game,
- 5:35but I also could be wrong. I'll go tackle. Yeah
- 5:38he did, Okay, started. I just don't remember if it
- 5:42was at left or right tackle. But he played one
- 5:44hundred percent of the offensive snaps in that game.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So all right, that's more impressive then.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So let's go through this data and tell
- 5:54us what the charts. For those who were watching at
- 5:56home or those who are listening, I'm sorry those were
- 5:59watching see this chart. So those who are listening, why
- 6:03don't Sam you break down the two, four, six, eight
- 6:06categories here that you've chosen.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Sure, So the categories chosen were sacks, sack percentage, which
- 6:13is just you know, sacks over total pass rush attempts,
- 6:17quarterback pressures, quarterback pressure percents, which is again is just
- 6:21the percent of pressures over pass rush attempts, time to sack,
- 6:27time to pressure, quick quarterback pressures, or just quarterback pressures
- 6:32under three seconds and get off, which is until they
- 6:35cross the line scrimmage. Right, pretty easy standard metrics.
- 6:40Speaker 1: By the way, I really appreciate that you isolate sack
- 6:44percentage from sacks because I mean, look at a team
- 6:46like the Eagles that this year especially right, they could
- 6:49have three or four different guys in past rushing roles,
- 6:53and you know, the number of sacks may not be
- 6:55as impressive as your sack percentage because as you could
- 7:00be playing far fewer snaps than say Micah Parsons, who's
- 7:04you know, doesn't come off the field a lot of times.
- 7:06So I think that is a more impressive or it
- 7:09can be a more impressive indicator of the type of
- 7:12pressure and sacks that you're creating.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I agree, and that's hopefully it'll give a
- 7:18good indication of how these guys actually fared in their
- 7:21one game. Now that being said, again, this is it's
- 7:26some of these analysis that analysis that are just you know,
- 7:30they're one game aren't always indicative of you know, a
- 7:34great representation of you know, the actual ability. So that
- 7:39being said, I do want to caveat that these kind
- 7:41of analyzes it's still very fun and still good to do,
- 7:44and it's good to pull you know, small samples from
- 7:48you know, a big, bigger field of work. So it's
- 7:51it'll still be good analysis, but you know it, one
- 7:55game is hard to say that this is representative of
- 7:57how they actually would perform always against the Eagles.
- 8:00Speaker 1: That makes sense, of course, of course, Yeah, this is
- 8:02and that's why I think we chose, you know, several
- 8:05pass rushers to not just not just go off one
- 8:08game even though it's one game per pass rusher. Sure,
- 8:11you've also done a good job of giving what these
- 8:13pass rushers done against the NF the rest of the
- 8:15NFL on average, But we can only go with the
- 8:18data that we're giving.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, so what.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Do we learn about him? I'm sorry, ahead you're gonna.
- 8:23Speaker 2: What I was gona say, it's the regular season data. That's
- 8:25the right thing I wanted to god. But if you
- 8:29look at Trey Hendrickson, you know, I think a good
- 8:32way to start with this is how he fared against
- 8:34the NFL. Right, So he's he averaged one point zero
- 8:37six sacks per game and a clip of three point
- 8:40six percent. He averaged five point four to one quarterback
- 8:46pressures at a clip of eighteen point nine percent. Uh.
- 8:49It took him about four point one seven seconds on
- 8:51average to time to sack and only two point six
- 8:55seconds in time to pressure. Uh. He averaged two point
- 8:59seven to one quick quarterback pressures per game and his
- 9:02get off was zero point seventy three.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Wow. You know, these are really good numbers that people will,
- 9:07I think find even more impressive as we go along,
- 9:11because he is the only main pass rusher that the
- 9:15Bengals have. I mean, they drafted Schmarstewar, who knows about
- 9:18this coming year, right, but last year he's the guy
- 9:21that everybody drew the circle around. And we'll look at
- 9:24some other players, Parsons, Garrett TJ. Watt, who you can
- 9:27say there are some pretty good interior and exterior rushers
- 9:30around this guy. But for the Bengals, it's really just
- 9:33him and some of his percentages are up there, if
- 9:36not better than some of the guys I mentioned.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And if you look at his statistics versus
- 9:43the Eagles, it's kind of impressive what the Eagles offensive
- 9:46line did, especially with Fred Johnson having to start. So
- 9:50if you look, he didn't get a sack, so obviously
- 9:53there's no sack percentage, and he had two quarterback pressures
- 9:57at a rate of twelve point five percent, which again
- 10:00is lower than what he averaged at five point four
- 10:03to one and eighteen point nine percent. Obviously there's no
- 10:06time to sack. You don't get a sack, and his
- 10:08time and pressure was the same. It was two point
- 10:10six no quick QB pressure, so nothing, no pressures under
- 10:15three seconds, which is impressive because again his time to
- 10:20pressure was two point six, so you would think that
- 10:23it would under that it would be that, but it
- 10:26just means like on average, he had one that was fast,
- 10:29but it wasn't, you know, considered even a pressure and
- 10:31his get off was zero point seven to two, which
- 10:34actually was faster, so it's even more impressive that he
- 10:38was he played faster, he got across the lines fromage faster,
- 10:41and yet it only kept him to two pressures.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that is impressive. He got his get off was faster,
- 10:47and his time to pressure was the same as it
- 10:50was against the rest of the league for that for
- 10:52last year, and yet he was not able to create
- 10:55a pressure or I'm sorry, he wasn't able to create
- 10:58more than two pressures, which is uh and his pressure
- 11:01percentage was lower. So that speaks to a probably the
- 11:05offensive line, especially with a backup and be probably Jalen
- 11:08Hurts being able to know where he's at and getting
- 11:10rid of the ball before the pressure can be created.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and actually like it's it's a little bit statistically
- 11:17impossible that his quick keep pressure wouldn't be one. So
- 11:20I'm thinking that the source data may have been wrong.
- 11:23That was when NFL Pro because if you think about it,
- 11:26is if his time to pressure is the same, a
- 11:28quick quick quarterback pressure is just under three seconds, right,
- 11:32So he had one pressure that was longer and one
- 11:34that was shorter, So his quick quarterback pressure probably should
- 11:37be one. But I just I went off of what
- 11:39NFL Pro had on the on the numbers.
- 11:42Speaker 1: But he averages close to three per game, so even
- 11:44one is a pretty you know, with a backup, is
- 11:46a pretty good job by the Eagles.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Anyway, it's still better, but I do want to point
- 11:50that out, that that that's what it probably should be.
- 11:52But again, I can't make up numbers, and I'm not
- 11:55going to.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So fair enough, fair enough, So let's move on to
- 11:59Miles Garrett, who was arguably the best pass ed rusher
- 12:02in the NFL, just signed a huge deal in the
- 12:05offseason that made him the sports highest highest play player
- 12:09I think, or defensive end until like TJ. Watt just
- 12:13signed one. So let's go with Miles Garrett and compare
- 12:17him how he diversed the Eagles versus the NFL.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Sure versus the NFL, he averaged zero point eight two
- 12:24sacks per game, three point one percent of his plays
- 12:28for sacks, four point nine to four QB pressures per game,
- 12:33eighteen point six percent pressure rate. His time to sack
- 12:38was four point one and his time to pressure was
- 12:41two point eight one and he was averaging two point
- 12:44three five quick quarterback pressures per game, again under three seconds,
- 12:48and his get off was zero point seven, which is
- 12:51even faster than Trey Hendrickson, right.
- 12:54Speaker 1: But however, as I was saying before, some of these statistics,
- 12:58he was a little Hendrickson in like sack percentage and
- 13:03pressure percentage, which similar situation though where Garrett on that
- 13:08defensive line was the only guy that people were really
- 13:11really scared about. They have some decent rushers, but nothing
- 13:14like him, and so he still puts up pretty good numbers.
- 13:17But it just showed you how Trey Hendrickson really sometimes
- 13:20flies under the radar, but it's just as good as
- 13:21anyone out there.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely. And then Garrett versus the Eagles, zero sacks,
- 13:27zero percent. Obviously, he had one more QB pressure than
- 13:32Hendrickson at three, and his quarterback pressure rate was much
- 13:35higher at sixteen point seven, but still lower than his
- 13:37average Obviously zero time to sack. His time to pressure
- 13:42was actually faster than his league average, so it was
- 13:45two point three to two point eight one, which is
- 13:48the only category at which he did better against the
- 13:52Eagles than against the rest of the NFL. He had
- 13:56two quick quarterback pressures and his get off was slower
- 13:59as zero point seventy four, which is still pretty fast,
- 14:02by the way. Yeah, pretty mean.
- 14:04Speaker 1: This is the guy who is considered the best that
- 14:06the league's position, and he didn't have a sack, a
- 14:09couple of pressures but less than the five that he
- 14:11averages per game, and a lower percentage of percentage of pressure.
- 14:17So they did a pretty good job. And this is
- 14:19the game, by the way, where I believe it was
- 14:23Lane who got hurt and then Fred Johnson came in
- 14:27because this game occurred first on the schedule. I know
- 14:32that Fred Johnson played thirteen snaps in that game, and
- 14:37then he started the next week against the Giants and
- 14:40the Bengals and the Jags Wars, then the than the Cowboys.
- 14:45Speaker 2: So yeah, absolutely, again, that's even more impressive.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, let us look at the next two guys,
- 14:53and these are some some big guns right here, Micah
- 14:55Parsons and TJ.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Watt. Yes, And I know originally we almost didn't put
- 15:03t J. Watt on here, but I looked at it
- 15:05and he played enough snaps where I thought it was
- 15:08justified to keep him on here.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Right, So this is that he'll be one where sack
- 15:12percentage might be more because he didn't play the entire
- 15:14game or he played limited snaps against the Eagles, right.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Right, Okay, I think he got hurt either in the
- 15:20third fourth quarter, so it wasn't as it wasn't as
- 15:22bad as originally anticipated. Regardless, Let's get into Micah first. Okay,
- 15:29So Micah only played thirteen games this season, so I
- 15:33think that's an important understanding going into looking at him.
- 15:38But in those thirteen games, he's average zero point nine
- 15:41to two sacks at a clip of three point one percent.
- 15:45His QB pressures were five point seven to seven with
- 15:48a clip of nineteen point one percent. His time to
- 15:51sack was four point eight, his time to pressure was
- 15:54two point seventy four, his quick quarterback pressures were two
- 15:59point five four game, and his get off was zero
- 16:03point seven to seven mm hm. And just those compared
- 16:08to the other guys, you know, he's right up there
- 16:11with them on all pretty much every stat.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yeah, this is just in Michael Parsons is good. He's
- 16:17a good player. That sack the three point one, I
- 16:20mean that's right up there with right Garrett, a little
- 16:23bit lower than than Hendrickson. And the point nine two,
- 16:25which is like a sack of game, is even better
- 16:28than Garrett's. So good stuff.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's pretty impressive for sure, and hopefully the
- 16:35Cowboys can't figure out how to pay him.
- 16:37Speaker 1: So but against the Eagles, how did he do comparatively?
- 16:42Speaker 2: So here's what's interesting. Obviously, he played two games against
- 16:46the Eagles, so you had to kind of look at,
- 16:50you know, his numbers and divide them by two, and
- 16:53so you have one point oh sacks, which means he
- 16:57had two sacks against them. So everything was you know,
- 17:00his average, His sack percent was five point four percent.
- 17:05His QB pressure was four, which means it was eight.
- 17:08His QB uh, you know, pressure percentage was twelve point
- 17:12five percent. His time to sack was four point eight three,
- 17:15his time and pressure was two point five to nine.
- 17:18He had two quick quarterback pressures, means he had four
- 17:21and his get off was zero point seven to six
- 17:24in both games, right, and so if you look at those,
- 17:29you know, it's it's pretty actually pretty even.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 17:33Speaker 2: He had more sacks than average against the Eagles and
- 17:39higher clip, but he had less quarterback pressures at a
- 17:43lower clip. His time to sack was a little was
- 17:48a little bit slower, which was better for the Eagles,
- 17:51but his time to pressure was quicker, which was obviously worse.
- 17:55And then his he had less quick quarterback pressures than
- 17:59he did against average teams, and his get off was
- 18:02almost the same. He was a little bit faster, right,
- 18:05And then I went back and I watched his two
- 18:08sacks and they both were against Fred Johnson.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Ah, there you go, So I mean, this is a
- 18:13really good job. Then against Michael Parsons, one of the
- 18:15best in the league. I particularly think the percentage here
- 18:19is that it took his sack was one. It was
- 18:22at five point four percent, right, Yeah, his normal one
- 18:26is three point one percent, So that to me is
- 18:28a pretty dramatic drop. And then you have a two
- 18:31game sample, not even just a one game sample. So
- 18:33they did a pretty good job against him, kept him lower,
- 18:37way lower on the quarterback pressure percentage from nineteen down
- 18:41to twelve and a half. Right, even though he had
- 18:43a little bit faster of a get off, and even
- 18:45though his time to pressure was a little lower, So
- 18:48when he did cause a pressure, he was causing a
- 18:50faster normal but his number of pressures or overall percentage
- 18:53of them were far lower against the Eagles and the
- 18:56rest of the league.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Great well said, for sure, not even sure if Fred
- 19:01Johnson was credited on the sack. By the way, because
- 19:04what he did is he started with him and then
- 19:05he rushed inside and just cleaned up basically on both sacks. Actually,
- 19:10it was really interesting.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Glad you brought that up. This is why when we
- 19:13were discussing how to go a go for this, we
- 19:15didn't want to do sort of win rate versus lineman, right,
- 19:20because that could take forever and because of twisting and
- 19:22stunting and a lot of these guys are always on
- 19:24the move. So we evaluated it as an offensive line
- 19:27as a whole against a pass rusher, which I thought
- 19:31was the better way to do.
- 19:32Speaker 2: It, absolutely all right, Great t J.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Watt, who, as you said, got injured door than game,
- 19:38but he still played roughly three quarters, so we have
- 19:40enough of a sample size to see how he did.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Absolutely so against you know, the NFL. He averages zero
- 19:49point six y' eight sacks per game, which is the
- 19:51lowest we've seen so far, at a sack percent of
- 19:55two point two percent. He had averaged two point eighty
- 19:58eight quarterback pressures per game at a rate of nine
- 20:01point four percent. His time to sack was four point
- 20:04five to nine, His time to pressure was three point
- 20:06oh five. He averaged one point six quick quarterback pressures
- 20:11and his get off was zero point eight three, which
- 20:15again is the worst out pretty much on all them
- 20:18that we've seen, right, right, and yet he gave the
- 20:22Eagles a lot of trouble. He did, and if you look,
- 20:26he wins on five categories against the Eagles. He wins
- 20:29in sacks, sack percentage, QB pressures, QB pressure percent time
- 20:35to sack.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Yeah, well, his sack percentage is a big Then again,
- 20:39it's just one game and not even a full game,
- 20:41so this can be skewed by just having three straight
- 20:44really good pass rushes in a row. And I think
- 20:46do we say, was anybody hurting this game?
- 20:51Speaker 2: I I'm not sure. I know Goddard was not playing,
- 20:55which if you want to do that as a part
- 20:58of it.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Oh, that's a huge part of it. I do remember
- 21:00this because they did play a lot of twelve personnel
- 21:03against the Steelers. They came out and did a lot
- 21:05of hurry up in that game. And I think it
- 21:07is because kal Katara in forgot or we know his
- 21:11blocking isn't great and he was asked at times to
- 21:13have to standalone block on TJ Watt.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Actually both sacks involved Cal Katara. Well, I watched them,
- 21:21and cal Katara and Game Well both chipped him on
- 21:25a play and then Lane went for cover up, but
- 21:27Jalen stepped up in the pocket and Lane isn't credited
- 21:30for the sack because you know, the quarterback moved up
- 21:33in the pocket and that was where the sack happened.
- 21:35The second sack was cal Katara chip and then Lane
- 21:39went to support it, and then he just got around Lane.
- 21:42And honestly, I think the sack was probably credited against
- 21:45Jalen because he just held the ball for way longer
- 21:49than you probably needed to in that situation. Yeah, but yeah,
- 21:53that's that's the circumstances by how the sacks actually happened.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And by the way, this is a good time to
- 21:58notice that note before we moved the next one, that
- 22:00Jalen Hurts took a ridiculous number of sacks for a
- 22:04winning quarterback and a team that won the Super Bowl
- 22:07last year. I have the numbers in front of me.
- 22:09It was the most of his career in terms of
- 22:11not only sacks, which was thirty eight that actually ties
- 22:15for the most, but his sack percentage was nine point
- 22:19five to two, which was I think the fourth highest
- 22:22amongst starting quarterbacks in the league, and way higher than
- 22:25his career average of seven point two to two. So
- 22:28he did a phenomenal job of holding onto the ball
- 22:31when he got sacked. But just because we always say
- 22:35off sacks aren't always an offensive line stat. In some cases, yes,
- 22:39like Calcatera misses a chip, that's bad, or game Will
- 22:42can't hold his pass protection that's bad. But also some
- 22:47of the best pass rushers didn't do well against the Eagles,
- 22:49even though Hurts took an absurd number of sacks, which
- 22:53to itself is pretty amazing.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think maybe one day in the offseason
- 22:58next year, maybe we can go into why certain sacks
- 23:02are credited against offensive linemen and why they're not. That
- 23:05might be a fun exercise. But like you said, we're
- 23:08gonna go back into twenty twenty five content soon, So.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Right, all right, we're gonna we'll go to Jared Verse.
- 23:15And like I was saying before, this guy is a
- 23:17guy who really heated up in the playoffs, more so
- 23:20in the regular season. So some of his regular season numbers.
- 23:23May you may look at this chart if you're watching
- 23:24and say, why are you using this guy? You know,
- 23:26compared to Micah Parsons. But this guy's gonna be the
- 23:29real deal, so we threw them on the list.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, And honestly, his bread and butter for the regular
- 23:35season was pressures rather than sacked. So, I mean, he
- 23:39just got to finish, and he did finish obviously in
- 23:42the playoff run, and he probably will that sack percentage
- 23:46will go up way higher in the upcoming season.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:50Speaker 2: That's wow.
- 23:50Speaker 1: That pressure percentage is pretty good. As I look at
- 23:53it now and I go back and look at some
- 23:54of the others, it's it's pretty darn good for a rookie.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's pretty impressive. So he had zero point
- 24:02three to five sacks per game, one percent sack rate.
- 24:07His quarterback pressure was four point four to seven with
- 24:10the sixteen point eight percent clip, which is the one
- 24:12we were saying was impressive. His time to sack was
- 24:15four point sixty six, his time to pressure was two
- 24:17point eight. He averaged one point five to nine quick
- 24:21quarterback pressures, and his get off was zero point eight three.
- 24:26All right, and against the Eagles, Eagles managed to keep
- 24:29him to zero sacks, one pressure, five point three percent
- 24:33of you know, the rate, zero time to sack. His
- 24:36time to pressure was significantly faster than his average time
- 24:40to pressure at one point nine, and obviously it's a
- 24:42quick quarterback pressure. But his get off was the same
- 24:46as his average.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Right, so his time to pressure was really just from
- 24:49that one pressure because only had one. Yeah, right, so
- 24:52it just happened to be a really good pressure on
- 24:54that Who knows what happened. It could have been like
- 24:57a play action where he was right there. We have
- 24:59no idea, But the point is it's a very small
- 25:01sample size on that time of pressure.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Awesome, all right. Didn't want to forget a guy who
- 25:08often flies under the radar, Josh Heinz Allen, so we
- 25:12can no longer have to confuse him with the quarterback
- 25:14Josh Allen. Do you remember the game where they played
- 25:17against each other and Josh Allen sacked Josh Allen.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I do remember that. That is awesome on the stat
- 25:22sheet too, right.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I think they were in the same draft also, if
- 25:25I'm not mistaken, Yeah, I think so.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, which is hilarious.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It is, But Josh Heines Allen is one of the
- 25:32better sort of under discussed pass rushers in the league
- 25:35every year.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he was talked about a lot during
- 25:38his rookie season and maybe his second season, and then
- 25:40it just kind of fell off, even though his play
- 25:42has been pretty decent.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yes, so what would we see from him against the rest.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Of the NFL. So he's averaging a sack every other
- 25:51game zero point five quarterback pressure is four point one
- 25:57nine quarterback pressure percent fourteen point nine percent, time to
- 26:01sack four point sixty three time to pressure three seconds,
- 26:05averaging zero point eight one quick quarterback pressures per game
- 26:08and this get off with zero point eight five. Now,
- 26:11interestingly enough, I believe this is Yeah, it is the
- 26:17absolute like best performance against the Eagles. So it was
- 26:23him or TJ. Watt, But he beats TJ. Watt by
- 26:25one category. TJ Watt only one five of the eight,
- 26:30you know, Josh heinz Allen won six of the eight. Yeah,
- 26:33And I looked at both his sacks two one was
- 26:35against Fred Johnson and one was against Calcatara.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Man, Like, the answers to the tests are there sometimes, right,
- 26:42I mean, that's great extra work by you to figure
- 26:45out where those pressures came from or where some of
- 26:48them came from. And that's a big difference when you're
- 26:50comparing it versus Jordan Malatta and Dallas Goddard. And you know, yes,
- 26:55the EU was won a Super Bowl. It's great and
- 26:56they were able to overcome their deficiencies. But they kind
- 26:59of why this year in camp they are really honed
- 27:03in on trying to find good backup offensive linemen because
- 27:06in general, Fred Johnson did a good job. It's certainly
- 27:09no shame to give up a sack to Josh Allen
- 27:11er a pressure, but Grant Calcutta has really hurt them
- 27:14at times in the blocking game. And you know, they
- 27:17brought in a bunch of different tight ends and they
- 27:18have a guy like e. J. Jenkins who's two hundred
- 27:20and sixty pounds I believe to fifty something like that,
- 27:23converted a wide receiver, big wide receiver as a tight
- 27:26end and have worked with him on blocking.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, And if you just want to look at
- 27:32these stats really quickly, it was two sacks against the
- 27:37Eagles that we just talked about. Eight point seven percent
- 27:41quarterback pressure is four which was less than his average.
- 27:44Very close though, seventeen point four percent quarterback pressure rate,
- 27:48which is higher than his average. His time to sack
- 27:52was four point five to seven, which was faster. His
- 27:54time to pressure was two point eight eight, which was faster.
- 27:57No quick, Again, it probably should have a quick QP
- 28:03pressure here. I'm not sure why NFL pro had zero.
- 28:07This is another instance where I marked it as like
- 28:10this is like, why is it less? Even though his
- 28:12time to pressure is less, which means statistically it's impossible
- 28:16for to not have a quick quarterback pressure. So it's
- 28:19it's possible that he loses on this one too. So yeah,
- 28:24but again I can't make up the numbers I have
- 28:26to go and what's based on there, and it's get
- 28:28off was faster.
- 28:30Speaker 1: So I wonder sometimes if there's a psychological element to
- 28:33for a pass rusher when you see someone who has
- 28:36a faster get off, a faster time to pressure, especially
- 28:40the get off, like because your get off should consistently
- 28:42be what it is if you're just that good of
- 28:45a player, right, And I wonder if you kind of
- 28:47see a backup lineman across from you, or a backup
- 28:51tight end that you know can't block, and it just
- 28:53gives you that like extra adrenaline sometimes and you shoot
- 28:56off the ball a little harder.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You know, Oh, absolutely, I'm sure that's the case, especially
- 29:01if you have film on a guy's weaknesses and you
- 29:05just you your skill set, you can you know, take
- 29:07care of that. So definitely all right.
- 29:11Speaker 1: So that that answers that question of how the Eagles.
- 29:14That was it?
- 29:15Speaker 2: That was the last guy.
- 29:16Speaker 1: That was about eight or nine different guys, and you
- 29:19can see Eagles did really well last year and they
- 29:22should be in pretty good hands again this year. Most
- 29:25of those guys sam were edge rusher, some of them
- 29:27moved round around a little bit, and you mentioned some
- 29:31of them sort of got their their pressures off, either
- 29:33a backup lineman or a backup tight end trying to block.
- 29:37But with the current state of the Eagles offensive line,
- 29:41you would think they should be all right again. To me,
- 29:45the real question would be can Jonen Hurts continue to
- 29:50take that many sacks that he did, which, by the way,
- 29:54probably came against a lot of them, not of the best.
- 29:57I feel like most of Jalen Hurts's sacks were almost
- 29:59those distributable sacks because he would hold on, hold on,
- 30:01and then he would just crumble under a pile of
- 30:04two or three guys. We would get to one, but
- 30:06he would hold on to the ball to see another down.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Or Pond.
- 30:09Speaker 1: I wonder how sustainable that is for him to have
- 30:12such a high sack rate and such a low turnover
- 30:17rate fumble rate comparatively when your offensive line is doing
- 30:20a really good job against some of the elite pass rushers.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Sure, and again we only looked at edges, so there's
- 30:25a lot of interior pressure was not you know, looked
- 30:28at in this particular study.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Awesome, all right, we will get to the next question
- 30:34in the next mail bag. That's going to do it
- 30:36for this edition of Inside the Data for Sam Finkel.
- 30:40I'm Jeff Mosher. Thanks for watching Inside the Data on
