In Part I of Death to America: The History Behind the Chant, I go back to the beginning of modern Iran’s struggle with foreign power — oil, empire, monarchy, and the growing realization that some of the country’s most important decisions were being shaped far beyond its borders.
This is where the story starts: not with 1979, but with the fight over who would control Iran’s resources, its government, and ultimately its future.
