- 0:01We are a civilization obsessed with the idea of power.
- 0:06In the external world. We fixate on economic power,
- 0:10political power, military might, physical strength, and various
- 0:16forms of magical and sexual power.
- 0:20We recognize the power of ideas, of charismatic leaders, of
- 0:25religious teachings, and many 10s or hundreds of millions of
- 0:30people have died as a result of the exercise of one power or
- 0:36another through the history of humanity.
- 0:40Popular culture is dominated by imaginations about individuals
- 0:44who possess, develop, or obtain some specific type of individual
- 0:50superpower and utilize it for good or ill in the society.
- 0:56This is a form of escapist entertainment to help make up
- 1:01for how powerless most people feel in relation to the forces
- 1:05at work to drive them through their daily lives.
- 1:10What is rarely recognized is that all of the external powers
- 1:14that are the levers of activity, development and control in the
- 1:18world are based on specific powers that arise within each
- 1:23individual and can be brought forward, focused, trained,
- 1:28developed and manifested by most people if they understand and
- 1:34follow the methodologies needed to do that.
- 1:38Just as we can see extraordinary feats of athletic performance in
- 1:42the Olympic Games, and can understand that these feats come
- 1:46about as a result of intense concentration and training
- 1:49regimens, so also we can begin to understand that with the
- 1:54right forms of concentration and systematic effort, many other
- 1:59forms of power can be brought into realization in our lives.
- 2:04The escapism we see in the worship of superheroes is a
- 2:08misplaced understanding that real power of various sorts is
- 2:13not real or capable of being developed by each of us, and
- 2:17that we therefore have to look outside ourselves for powers
- 2:21that can save us or advance our interests.
- 2:25Rishis, sages and shaman have long understood that the root of
- 2:31all power is within, and that through specific practices many
- 2:36powers can indeed be manifested. Yogic practitioners have long
- 2:41been advised that while powers may develop within them as a
- 2:45result of their practice, they should disregard them so as not
- 2:50to be distracted in their seeking for the eternal Srioro.
- 2:56Bindo and the Mother take a more nuanced view of the situation.
- 3:00They recognize that the seeking after power can become a
- 3:04distraction. However, they also recognize
- 3:09that as consciousness evolves and develops, new powers will
- 3:13naturally begin to express themselves, and this natural
- 3:17evolutionary development is a benefit, not simply a
- 3:21distraction. Thus, there is a role for the
- 3:25exercise of these powers in the furtherance of the progress and
- 3:28perfection of our inner lives and our outer circumstances in
- 3:34the world. People throughout time have been
- 3:38intrigued by the possibility of new occult or paranormal powers
- 3:43that they can access and utilize.
- 3:46Tremendous focus has been placed on methods that developed as a
- 3:50result of interest, including physical, vital, emotional,
- 3:55mental, psychic, and spiritual methods of action.
- 4:00In his Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramanth Yogananda described
- 4:06meeting with many individuals who exhibited powers on a number
- 4:10of different planes. Alexandra David Neal and her
- 4:14various texts relating her experiences and travels in Tibet
- 4:20also describes numerous individuals and the powers they
- 4:24manifested, as well as describing her own first hand
- 4:29experience in developing some of those powers.
- 4:34The current text Powers Within has been extracted, organized
- 4:40and compiled by Doctor AS Delal from the writings of Sri
- 4:45Aurobindo and the Mother. A wide range of powers, many
- 4:50that we recognize as theoretically available to us,
- 4:54and a great many more that we simply do not attend to, are
- 4:58systematically reviewed. The manner of their development
- 5:02set forth, and the proper use and implementation of these
- 5:06powers in our lives is examined along the way.
- 5:12Occult powers, paranormal powers, and other powers of mind
- 5:17and body are discussed and explored in reference.
- 5:25Sri Aurobindo and the Mother powers within.
