• 0:00
Chapter twenty two, Pinocchio discovers the thieves, and as a reward for faithfulness,
• 0:05
he regains his liberty. Even though a boy may be very unhappy,
• 0:10
he very seldom loses sleep over his worries. The Marionette, being no exception
• 0:15
to this rule, slept on peacefully for a few hours till well along toward
• 0:19
midnight, when he was awakened by strange whisperings and stealthy sounds coming from the
• 0:24
yard. He stuck his nose out of the dog house and saw four slender,
• 0:28
hairy animals. They were weasels, small animals, very fond of both
• 0:33
eggs and chickens. One of them left her companions, and, going to
• 0:37
the door of the dog house, said in the sweet voice, good evening.
• 0:42
M Lampo. My name is not M. Lampo, answered Pinocchio.
• 0:46
Who are you then? I am Pinocchio. What are you doing here?
• 0:52
I'm the watch dog? But where is Melampo? Where is the old dog
• 0:56
who used to live in this house? He died this morning, died,
• 1:02
poor beast. He was so good still, judging by your face, I
• 1:07
think you too are a good natured dog. I beg your pardon. I
• 1:11
am not a dog. What are you then, I am a marionette.
• 1:17
Are you taking the place of the watch dog? I'm sorry to say that
• 1:21
I am. I'm being punished. Well, I shall make the same terms
• 1:26
with you that we had with the dead Malampo. I'm sure you will be
• 1:30
glad to hear them. And what are the terms? This is our plan,
• 1:36
will come once in a while, as in the past, to pay
• 1:40
a visit to this hen house, and we'll take away eight chickens. Of
• 1:44
these seven are for us and one for you, provided of course, that
• 1:49
you will make believe you are sleeping and will not guard for the farmer.
• 1:53
Did Malampo really do that, asked Pinocchio. Indeed he did, and because
• 2:00
that we were the best of friends. Sleep away peacefully, and remember that
• 2:05
before we go, we shall leave you a nice fat chicken all ready for
• 2:08
your breakfast in the morning. Is that understood even too well? Answered Pinocchio,
• 2:15
and shaking his head in a threatening manner, he seemed to say,
• 2:17
we'll talk this over in a few minutes, my friends. As soon as
• 2:23
the four weasels had talked things over, they went straight to the chicken coop,
• 2:27
which stood close to the dock house. Digging busily with teeth and claws,
• 2:31
they opened the little door and slipped it. But they were no sooner
• 2:36
in than they heard the door close with a sharp bay. The one who
• 2:38
had done the trick was Pinocchio, who, not satisfied with that, dragged
• 2:43
a heavy stone in front of it. That done, he started to bark,
• 2:47
and he barked as if he were a real watch dog. Bow bow
• 2:51
wow, bow wow. The farmer heard the loud barks and jumped out of
• 2:54
bed, Taking his gun. He leaped to the window and shouted, what's
• 2:59
the matter? The thieves are here, answered Pinocchio, where are they in
• 3:04
the chicken coop? I'll come down in the second, And in fact he
• 3:08
was down in the yard in a twinkling and running toward the chicken coop.
• 3:13
He opened the door, pulled out the weasels one by one, and after
• 3:15
tying them in a bag, said to them in a happy voice, you're
• 3:20
in my hands at last. I could punish you now, but I'll wait
• 3:23
in the morning. You may come with me to the inn, and there
• 3:25
you'll make a fine dinner for some hungry mortal. It is really too great
• 3:30
an honor for you. One you do not deserve. But as you see,
• 3:34
I am really a very kind and generous man, and I am going
• 3:37
to do this for you. Then he went up to Pinocchio and began to
• 3:40
pet and caress him. How did you ever find them out so quickly?
• 3:44
And to think that m Lampo, my faithful Malampo, never saw them in
• 3:47
all these years the marionette could have told then and there all he knew about
• 3:53
the shameful contract between the dog and the weasels. The thinking of the dead
• 3:57
dog. He said to himself, Malampo is dead. What is the use
• 4:00
of accusing him? The dead are gone, and they cannot defend themselves.
• 4:04
The best thing to do is to leave them in peace. Were you awake
• 4:09
or asleep when they came, continued the farmer. I was asleep, answered
• 4:13
Pinocchio. But they awakened me with their whisperings. One of them even came
• 4:16
to the door of the dog house and said to me, if you promise
• 4:19
not to bark, we will make you a present of one of the chickens
• 4:23
for your breakfast. Did you hear that they have the audacity to make such
• 4:27
a proposition as that to me? For you must know that though I am
• 4:30
a very wicked marionette, full of faults. Still I never have been,
• 4:34
nor ever shall be bribed. Fine boy, cried the farmer, slapping him
• 4:40
on the shoulder in a friendly way. You ought to be proud of yourself,
• 4:43
and to show you what I think of you. You are free from
• 4:45
this instant And he slipped the dog collar from his neck. End of Chapter
• 4:49
  twenty two.
