Transcript
- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scroll, Tik Tok's AI summary feature
- 0:04allegedly generated a racist description of a black creator.
- 0:08The Aussie government banned Sneako from the country, Mr.
- 0:12Beast compares himself to Adele, and James Charles goes off the
- 0:16rails on a user asking him for money.
- 0:19Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:23culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:25media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:29through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:31I'm your host Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:34youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:38Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:40A Friday mini scroll and as usual, a Friday mini scroll.
- 0:43The stories are random as fuck, but we are here and we're going
- 0:45to have a good time anyways. So before I get started, help us
- 0:50get to 1000 Spotify star ratings.
- 0:52Stop the bop. OK, I think we're going to get
- 0:54there this weekend. We only have a few left so
- 0:56please Spotify star rate US. Thousands of you listen to every
- 1:00single episode. Please just star rate US if you
- 1:02have Spotify and you haven't done it yet and then I will stop
- 1:04asking you. We will have stop to the bop.
- 1:07OK, the first story that I have for you guys today is a really
- 1:11upsetting 1. So Tik Tok's AI summary feature
- 1:15was racist towards a black creator.
- 1:18A content creator named Aisha Marie Noel is going viral after
- 1:21discovering that Tik Tok's AI summary feature had generated a
- 1:25racist description of one of her videos.
- 1:27Aisha is a creator with over 110,000 followers and she
- 1:31primarily post commentary videos about politics and culture.
- 1:34Yesterday, she made a video saying she was notified about
- 1:36this by a follower who had clicked on the summary of her
- 1:39video of a video that she had posted and saw that Tik Tok's AI
- 1:43described Aisha in the video as quote turning into a stylized
- 1:47monkey. The video in question was simply
- 1:49just her lip syncing along to a song as she celebrated 110,000
- 1:55followers. So the TikTok AI called me a
- 1:58monkey. I got a message from one of my
- 2:04followers that you know that AI summary which is so fucking
- 2:07stupid by the way. TikTok get rid of that shit.
- 2:09Nobody wants that. The AI summary that shows up
- 2:13underneath people's videos. If you look this follower and
- 2:16shout out to you. Thanks for bringing this to my
- 2:18attention. Messaged me saying that
- 2:21something racist was in my AI summary for one of my videos and
- 2:25asked me if I wanted to see it and was just expressing concern
- 2:28about it. And I was like, yeah, send it to
- 2:30me. Thank you so much for bringing
- 2:31this to my attention. And the summary of my video was
- 2:36that this video is of a person who is transforming into a
- 2:41monkey essentially. This is so upsetting, it's so
- 2:45disgusting and it's also an example of something that
- 2:48Annabelle talks a lot about on mini text scroll how AI is
- 2:52becoming increasingly racist as these tools get quote UN quote
- 2:55smarter. So a 2024 study by Cornell
- 2:58University found that as AI tools have grown in size and
- 3:01capability, overt racist outputs appear to be decreasing.
- 3:05But covert bias, so like hidden discriminatory tendencies, are
- 3:10actually increasing. So this means that AI might not
- 3:14spew like obvious slurs, but it can still embed stereotypes or
- 3:19biased assumptions in less visible ways.
- 3:21And I would say this is a prime example of that.
- 3:23So Isha's post has gone so viral for obvious reasons.
- 3:27And well, obviously we all know that these AI summaries and
- 3:31search queries on TikTok are often very wrong.
- 3:34I think at the end of the day, TikTok still needs to be held
- 3:37accountable as a company for what its AI tools are
- 3:40suggesting. The unfortunate reality is that
- 3:42we are at this place where AI has become so quickly like one
- 3:46of those things that people can hide behind and use to like,
- 3:49skirt blame or repercussions. And actually a case in point was
- 3:53one of Annabelle's stories on Wednesday about Bunny Hadiya and
- 3:56the Uber AI. And, and it's like the Uber
- 3:58driver can say, oh, it was Grok just like going off the rails.
- 4:01And I had no idea. And then like Uber can be like,
- 4:04oh, was it really our driver or like, was it actually AI?
- 4:07And I feel like the unfortunate reality is in this case, like,
- 4:09wow, TikTok should absolutely be held accountable for what is
- 4:14coming up in their search queries.
- 4:16It's hard to hold them accountable for that because
- 4:19they can so easily just be like, oh, well, like it's AI, it was
- 4:22trained off the Internet and user behavior, not us.
- 4:25And I understand that it would be a huge job for a company to
- 4:28manage that behind the scenes. It reminds me of the
- 4:31conversations that we used to have about moderation before
- 4:33moderation probably just got completely taken over by AI over
- 4:36the past couple of years. But you know, like these tech
- 4:39platforms and the problems that they had around moderation and
- 4:43now the problems that they have around AI prompts and
- 4:46suggestions and queries and things like that.
- 4:49Managing all of that and rectifying the problems behind
- 4:52the scenes with that. Like, yes, that is a ginormous
- 4:55job that until these tech companies are forced to take
- 4:58action on it, they won't because it's going to cost them so much
- 5:01money and it's going to be this huge endeavor.
- 5:04But sorry, you're also TikTok. Like you literally have billions
- 5:08and billions and billions and billions of dollars.
- 5:10Like with great power and billions of dollars comes great
- 5:14responsibility. OK, if you want to have the
- 5:16biggest video sharing platform in the entire world, you are
- 5:20going to be held to a very high standard.
- 5:22I think we should be holding them to a much higher standard
- 5:25than we hold them to. Not just TikTok, all of these
- 5:28tech platforms. There's always so many
- 5:30bootlickers in the comments who are like, oh, well, they can't
- 5:33control it. Like could you imagine how much
- 5:35time and energy and money it would take to moderate something
- 5:38like this to change something like this?
- 5:39Like you have no idea how these LMS work.
- 5:42It's like, no, I do. I understand that.
- 5:44But they've all the money in the world to buy themselves that
- 5:47time and to buy themselves that service.
- 5:50Like they can make it happen. If anyone can make it happen,
- 5:52it's them. And they should be forced to
- 5:55make that happen. All right, the next story that I
- 5:57have for you guys today, this is a palate cleanser because it
- 6:00will make us feel better. The Australian government has
- 6:02banned Sneako from entering the company the company the Country
- 6:07for life. Famous manosphere streamer
- 6:10Sneako was reportedly kicked out of Australia and hit with a
- 6:13lifetime ban of re entry after authorities and media scrutiny
- 6:18focused on his online history and behavior.
- 6:20So Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed on
- 6:23Wednesday that the decision was taken to prevent someone who
- 6:26authorities view as spreading hatred from remaining in the
- 6:29country. He said.
- 6:30Quote, our government has made it very clear we will use every
- 6:33power available to us to protect our community from people coming
- 6:36to this country to spread hatred.
- 6:38The clauses that have been used to cancel this visa were amended
- 6:41by the Parliament earlier this year.
- 6:43That means it's not simply the current visa that's canceled,
- 6:46but now there is a lifetime ban preventing him from ever
- 6:49applying to another Australian visa.
- 6:50We are a better country when he is somewhere else, yes.
- 6:54So Sneako first built his large following through live streams
- 6:57and commentary videos, but in recent years he's become one of
- 7:00the most divisive figures in the online world because he's become
- 7:03ingratiated in the manosphere. He's been banned from major
- 7:07platforms including YouTube and Twitch over alleged violations
- 7:10of their rules for hate speech and harmful conduct, and has
- 7:13faced criticism for promoting misogynistic and extremist
- 7:16leaning content. Over the years he's become this
- 7:19like central figure in the manosphere, like I said, and he
- 7:22spouts a lot of anti feminist, anti-Semitic and racist views.
- 7:26For years, clips of him using Nazi slogans and offensive
- 7:29rhetoric have circulated online and have been cited by groups,
- 7:32raising concerns about how his influence may impact
- 7:35impressionable young audiences. So the reason why Sico was in
- 7:39Australia is because he was on this Southeast Asia like content
- 7:43travel tour where he was going to meet up with other creators
- 7:45and they were going to film content together.
- 7:46And Australia was part of that tour for him.
- 7:48And the band came essentially after media outlets started
- 7:52questioning why someone with his background would be granted a
- 7:54visa in the 1st place. Especially because we just went
- 7:57through the Bondi attacks on the Jewish community in December.
- 8:01So this pressure prompted the government to cancel his visa
- 8:03and impose a ban on him, Which obviously was a very good
- 8:07decision. Now, the last time that we
- 8:09reported on Sneco in any type of meaningful way was actually back
- 8:13in 2023 before mini scrolls. So it was in our viral news
- 8:17episode. And it's because there was a
- 8:18clip going so viral from a fan event where a group of young
- 8:22boys who were his fans, they approached him and they started
- 8:25shouting almost like his talking points back at him.
- 8:28So they were saying like homophobic, transphobic and
- 8:30misogynistic comments at him to get his approval.
- 8:33They were saying things like, all gays should die and fuck the
- 8:36women. And this went viral because a
- 8:39lot of people saw it as essentially, like, the
- 8:41consequences of his actions. Because in the video, Sneako
- 8:45appeared visibly uncomfortable and like, kind of tried to
- 8:47respond with awkward remarks. He was kind of like, no, no, no,
- 8:50we love women. And he seemed really, like,
- 8:52taken aback at the time by what was being echoed back to him by
- 8:56his young fanbase. So people kind of, I think we're
- 8:59like a little bit hopeful after that video being like, oh, maybe
- 9:01he's realizing, you know, the consequences of what he's
- 9:04putting out there like this. Is it like he's watching it
- 9:07happen in real time and he's realizing like, oh, fuck, like
- 9:09maybe I've taken it too far this kind of, you know, extremist
- 9:12rage baiting. But no, I don't think much has
- 9:17changed. Also, after that video went
- 9:19viral, he then issued this like, quote UN quote apology.
- 9:22It was like a sarcastic apology where he essentially defended
- 9:25the video. He claimed the kids were joking
- 9:28and then he blamed the LGBTQ inclusive education and media
- 9:33for positioning it or like twisting it in the wrong way.
- 9:37So for now, we in Australia are marked safe from another
- 9:40Manosphere creator. All right, the next story that I
- 9:43have for you guys, unfortunately, my next story is
- 9:45also about a problematic male influencer, but Mr. Beast is
- 9:50feuding with the pop culture update account on X pop base
- 9:55after they didn't give him a good enough birthday shout out.
- 9:59OK, so they posted today Mr. Beast turns 28 and it's just a
- 10:04picture of Mr. Beast. And if you know anything about
- 10:06these pop culture update accounts, they're always like
- 10:09Zara Larsson stuns in new photo and they explain like where she
- 10:13was or why she was doing that. And when it's someone's
- 10:16birthday, they usually do post a lot more than Mr. Beast turns
- 10:2028. OK, so it was a very bare bones
- 10:23like it does. It does let you know where the
- 10:26moderators or the account coordinators sit with Mr. Beast.
- 10:30OK, OK, so he responds with a screenshot, the birthday post
- 10:35that Pop Bass gave to Adele, which reads Happy 38th birthday
- 10:39to the iconic Adele. The Emmy six time Grammy and
- 10:43Oscar winning vocalist is one of the biggest forces in music
- 10:46history. With numerous records to her
- 10:48name including one of the fastest selling albums of the
- 10:5021st century. She is one of the best selling
- 10:53and most acclaimed artists of all time.
- 10:55OK. And then he screenshots that and
- 10:58responds to Pop Bays for his birthday announcement and says.
- 11:03I find it funny how different these two tweets are.
- 11:05I can't tell if this is Mr. Beast throwing like a thinly
- 11:09veiled self-conscious temper tantrum over this or if he's
- 11:13actually like thinking that this is funny, but either way, it's
- 11:16freaking hilarious. OK, the last way that I have you
- 11:18guys today I saw this popping off literally right before I
- 11:21started recording, so I feel this is a developing story.
- 11:25But James Charles is currently under fire after he posted a
- 11:27TikTok mocking a woman who slid into his DMS asking him for
- 11:31money. I.
- 11:31Just got Adm on here from a girl that said good morning.
- 11:34James. I know you'll probably never see
- 11:36this, but if you could just take one minute to read it would
- 11:39really mean a lot to me. I'm really struggling right now
- 11:42because Spirit Airlines just filed for bankruptcy and I
- 11:45haven't lost my job. Here's the GoFundMe link.
- 11:49Any donations help? I'm sure they do, sweetheart.
- 11:55I'm sure they do. You know what else would help
- 11:57you? Getting another job?
- 11:59Yeah try that. Because in the time that it took
- 12:01you to copy and paste the same fuck ass message to myself, who
- 12:05you don't follow by the way, and probably 100 other influencers
- 12:08and celebrities, you could have applied for 100 other jobs.
- 12:10But you didn't because you're a lazy piece of shit and you're
- 12:13entitled and you think the influences and celebrities
- 12:17should fund your life for you. Why?
- 12:19Why would I ever help you? You're not a fan.
- 12:21You don't even follow me. You've never supported me.
- 12:23This is your first time jamming and you think that I'm going to
- 12:26send you money because you lost your job?
- 12:28Oh my God. Welcome to the real world
- 12:30sweetheart. People lose their jobs every
- 12:32fucking day and you're white, pretty, and able bodied.
- 12:36You're in a much better position than a lot of other people out
- 12:38here who are trying clearly much harder to make a better life for
- 12:41themselves. Why would I fucking help you?
- 12:44Aside from that, 17,000 people lost their jobs as pay your
- 12:47airlines why do? You think you need to go?
- 12:49Fuck me, I can at least like 1% respect the mentality of closed
- 12:53mouths. Don't get that.
- 12:54Doesn't hurt to try, but honestly it does hurt to try
- 12:56because now you pissed me off. Okay, I'm not the one.
- 12:58Go find fucking Mr. Reese. This is literally his entire
- 13:00stick. I'm sure the next YouTube video
- 13:02is literally going to be like I rehired all 17,000 of the Spirit
- 13:05Airlines employees and it's going to be the real life.
- 13:07Hunger Games, the last one of them to leave the Spirit
- 13:09Airlines. Plane.
- 13:10Gets to be the CEO of the new company and gets a house at a
- 13:13car, $10 million that everybody else.
- 13:15Dies like go find that video to compete and baby, I'm not
- 13:18helping you. I'm not fucking helping you.
- 13:20All you did was lost your job. OK, welcome to the real world.
- 13:23I can at least understand if you were like James.
- 13:26I'm a long time fan. Here's a a trillion years of DMS
- 13:29and and my support for you. I love you.
- 13:31I'm suffering with a really rare genetic disease that there is no
- 13:34cure for and I'm trying to raise money for myself and other
- 13:37people that have this. Maybe I would help.
- 13:39Maybe I would help because I I love you and I appreciate you.
- 13:42This bitch, you lost your fucking job.
- 13:44Oh oh, oh, oh, what are we going to do?
- 13:49Nothing. I'm going to do nothing.
- 13:51You know what you need to do? Go find a fucking.
- 13:53New one girl put some effort into the workplace.
- 13:58My face when I watch this TikTok.
- 14:01You guys, my job was literally on the floor.
- 14:03OK so do influencers probably receive so many of these
- 14:07messages and are a lot of them probably scams?
- 14:10Yes but if he was really so offended by that message, like
- 14:14delete it, block it, move on, whatever.
- 14:18I think there is a difference between what is happening here
- 14:21where he is getting a message that is not hate.
- 14:24Right. She is asking him to contribute
- 14:26to a GoFundMe. Whether that's right or wrong is
- 14:28not really what I'm here to talk about.
- 14:30It's more like she is asking him to contribute to something he
- 14:33believes she's not a fan and that having a GoFundMe for her
- 14:35job loss is like entitled and hoping that influencers will
- 14:38contribute to it. OK, that is so different than
- 14:40when influencers, in my opinion, put somebody who has sent them
- 14:43like a hate DM or something on blast.
- 14:45I feel like in that case, I don't have a strong opinion one
- 14:48way or another in terms of if that's right or wrong.
- 14:51I think it depends on the message.
- 14:52I think it depends on how big the following is of the
- 14:54influencer. I think it depends on lots of
- 14:58factors. That is one of those topics in
- 15:01Internet culture and like creator behavior where I feel
- 15:04like if you argued at me one point or another I would be
- 15:10swayed. You know, like I'm not totally
- 15:11sure where I stand on it, but this was not that.
- 15:14Like why did you have to make a dedicated TikTok about this?
- 15:17This girl was not sliding into your DMS to say anything mean to
- 15:20you. So for him to come guns blazing
- 15:23being like you're a lazy piece of shit and entitled the calling
- 15:27her names coming from somebody who has never had to job hunt as
- 15:32an adult who probably will never have to job hunt as an adult.
- 15:36He has no experience in the job market.
- 15:38He has no idea what the situation is out there right now
- 15:41being like, go get another job as if it's so easy.
- 15:43Yes, You literally just said that thousands of people have
- 15:46been laid off. That is true.
- 15:48So do you think it's a thriving job market?
- 15:51And I know that was not the crux of his point, but for him to say
- 15:55those words at all, to talk about getting a job and telling
- 15:58a follower or somebody, a user, whatever, he doesn't think that
- 16:01she's a fan, somebody to get a job at all from somebody who has
- 16:07been so privileged to never need to get a job.
- 16:10Like my jaws on the floor. Like what an insanely
- 16:13disproportionate reaction. I have no idea why he posted
- 16:16this. The only thing that I will give
- 16:19him credit for in this TikTok is when he dragged Mr. Beast.
- 16:23I thought that was on point otherwise I was like what the
- 16:26fuck is going on? This is such an insane TikTok to
- 16:29post and for him to call her entitled and then for him to
- 16:32post that isn't giving hypocrisy.
- 16:34Someone on Reddit said aren't a lot of influencers known for
- 16:37begging fans to buy whatever merch they have?
- 16:39Yes and I know his point was like well maybe if you were a
- 16:41fan I would help you. But the way that he is
- 16:43positioning this interaction and the way he's made this TikTok,
- 16:48it's like he's sitting on this high horse being like, I'm
- 16:50saving lives. Like when you have a palette to
- 16:54launch or brand to launch, James, like you are Hawking that
- 16:57shit, like you are trying to get your followers money.
- 17:01You are rich because of your fans and your followers.
- 17:03And I know you're saying that this woman is not a follower or
- 17:05a fan, but regardless, you are trying to get like the general
- 17:08public's money. You are trying to get them to
- 17:10spend their personal money on you and to have major money that
- 17:13way. And then to be speaking to
- 17:14people like this, those same consumers like this, this is a
- 17:18wild TikTok. I actually don't even know if
- 17:21he's still kept it up. That's why I'm saying like a
- 17:22developing story because I feel like he may take it down and
- 17:26there may be some very interesting responses on TikTok
- 17:29about this after. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 17:32mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 17:34I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 17:36and subscribe. Help us stop the Bob.
- 17:38I think we're going to get there this weekend.
- 17:41Fingers fucking crossed. OK?
- 17:43I love you guys. Thank you for listening and I
- 17:45will talk to you on Monday. By Centennial World Podcast
