- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Noadriball, the podcast where we talk
- 0:09Speaker 1: about netball, but we talk about so much more. And
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the week when a lot of grand finals have
- 0:13Speaker 1: been put to bed and decided, whatever the result may be,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we are facing a new season. It is spring, still
- 0:21Speaker 1: a lot of netball to talk about. I'm Carolyn Swindell,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm kath.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Cox, I'm Lizzellis.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, this is rare.
- 0:28Speaker 3: We like pushing three or four weeks.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We've all been all being together.
- 0:31Speaker 3: I know something's going to happen.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Well, someone's going to add a little holiday soon.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a couple of weeks. We're good for the minute. Hey,
- 0:39Speaker 3: tell me about your week though, because you tootled off
- 0:42Speaker 3: to the land of the Long White cloud. Last you
- 0:45Speaker 3: did that, we were talking about your airport Shenanigans when
- 0:48Speaker 3: you had a couple of wines in the lounde yes
- 0:50Speaker 3: and went.
- 0:51Speaker 2: A little rogue with the shopping.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I did, and I was very disappointed this time because
- 0:54Speaker 1: I thought I'm going to go to because it's the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Tapapa the museum in Wellington, which is great. They have
- 0:59Speaker 1: a star at the airport and that's where I saw
- 1:01Speaker 1: the earrings and thought I'm not buying earrings. I've got
- 1:05Speaker 1: enough earrings. I'm responsible, and then went into the lounge,
- 1:08Speaker 1: had a couple of lines and went, I'll get online,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and then I ended up buying three pairs of them.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But the store has closed, so I can't even find
- 1:14Speaker 1: out who the manufacturer was because they were such great earrings.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But I hope that it comes back. But no, so
- 1:19Speaker 1: I didn't buy any I had six flights in six
- 1:22Speaker 1: days last week. I went to New Zealand went to
- 1:25Speaker 1: Wellington and saw my mum and then together we went
- 1:27Speaker 1: down to Nelson and drove to Rewalker where my aunt
- 1:30Speaker 1: and uncle are. Then we flew back and then the
- 1:32Speaker 1: next day I got home Friday night, and then flew
- 1:35Speaker 1: to Brisbane for my goddaughter's twenty first on Saturday night,
- 1:38Speaker 1: which was very fun. But I don't want to see
- 1:41Speaker 1: an airport for a little while. I have opinions about airports.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I have opinions about people at airports. I paid seven
- 1:48Speaker 1: dollars and ten cents for a coffee at the airport.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Did you see my comment on your social media post?
- 1:53Speaker 4: No?
- 1:53Speaker 3: I was I rate for you? That really pisces me off?
- 1:57Speaker 3: And was it bad?
- 1:58Speaker 1: It was okay, yeah, but what I did love it
- 2:01Speaker 1: was ten thirty on a Sunday morning, and you know
- 2:04Speaker 1: it may have something to do that. I felt a
- 2:06Speaker 1: little bit dusty from the twenty first because you got
- 2:08Speaker 1: to show these young people how to party.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Right, you have a shot?
- 2:11Speaker 2: I did never shot?
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, what was it?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Tequila?
- 2:15Speaker 2: Terrible to heal it?
- 2:16Speaker 3: Tequila just straight up to Kere with the lemon and
- 2:18Speaker 3: the salt.
- 2:18Speaker 1: No, we just this is my god, I just can't
- 2:21Speaker 1: said you're doing this, and it's like, well, if I'm
- 2:23Speaker 1: doing it, your parents are. And her mother, who was sensible, refused,
- 2:27Speaker 1: but her father did it and we gathered the other
- 2:29Speaker 1: godparents together. So that was nice.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But I have never been out on a night out
- 2:33Speaker 2: where there's been shots and it's finished.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Well yeah, well I don't know how it finished for
- 2:37Speaker 1: them because they all went out so but and it
- 2:40Speaker 1: was looking pretty well. But so we stayed there. It's like,
- 2:44Speaker 1: why would we go out?
- 2:45Speaker 3: No, because it escalates very quickly. Want to get out?
- 2:48Speaker 3: I reckon the last time we were together, shots made
- 2:50Speaker 3: themselves present. We threw them over our shoulder.
- 2:53Speaker 2: We did.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yes, that's very same, is very smart because the other
- 2:58Speaker 3: person that bought them was so okay it is and
- 3:01Speaker 3: they're not looking around U, so he's actually drinking it
- 3:03Speaker 3: or not. I just want everyone. I think Gordy was
- 3:06Speaker 3: there too, and Gordy threw it over her shoulder too.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Which there was a lot of wet floor action. Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 2: time around, and I was like, I have not I
- 3:13Speaker 2: don't care. I don't care who I hit with this
- 3:15Speaker 2: shot going over my shoulder. I'm not drinking it because
- 3:17Speaker 2: I know if I drink a shot, it's like rocket
- 3:20Speaker 2: fuel for me and I go, I go crazy, and
- 3:22Speaker 2: then I'll fall off a cliff. And I'm fifty two
- 3:24Speaker 2: years old and I don't need that in my life.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So I was like, yeah, yeah, I'll have a shot
- 3:29Speaker 2: over the shoulder. It goes.
- 3:30Speaker 3: If you didn't have to wake up the next day
- 3:32Speaker 3: and function, you'd probably do it. That's my biggest handbreak
- 3:35Speaker 3: now and want to feel crap, and now it takes
- 3:38Speaker 3: two days to recover.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I was going to stay the problem one. I reckon,
- 3:42Speaker 1: this is what I did. One shot and that's it.
- 3:45Speaker 2: No, hang on, can I say on that note? One
- 3:48Speaker 2: shot is too many and then one hundred is not enough?
- 3:50Speaker 2: So for me, it's not It's true it's a slippery slope.
- 3:55Speaker 1: But I'm at the airport with my seven dollars ten
- 3:57Speaker 1: coffee and it's ten thirty in the morning and the
- 4:00Speaker 1: wine tasting people are there, and I always think, who
- 4:03Speaker 1: does who is doing the wine tasting at the airport.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I love wine tasting. It might actually be my religion.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'm not sure yet, but you know, it's like I've
- 4:11Speaker 1: never particularly at ten thirty on a Sunday morning, I
- 4:13Speaker 1: would have thought, why don't you start staffing this thing
- 4:15Speaker 1: from midday? Yeah, she was delightful. I didn't see anyone
- 4:19Speaker 1: doing the wine tasting, but clearly if they're paying a
- 4:22Speaker 1: staffer to be there and do it, they think it's
- 4:24Speaker 1: worthwhile doing. But it's like Brisbane Airport did make me
- 4:28Speaker 1: think that I wanted to drink heavily, but it wasn't
- 4:31Speaker 1: going to be the wine tasting.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I reckon some people would though, Like you know,
- 4:34Speaker 3: when you're heading out on a holiday and you just
- 4:36Speaker 3: got the buzz. I always have a champagne when I
- 4:39Speaker 3: get to the airport when I'm going on holidays, Yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 3: wouldn't matter what time of the day it was. So
- 4:42Speaker 3: they probably think there's a few people that are going
- 4:44Speaker 3: to rock up and have their wines. Wine's a different story, though,
- 4:46Speaker 3: wasn't it. I'm not going to drink a red wine
- 4:48Speaker 3: at eight o'clock in the water, no, celebrate my holiday. No.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So I'm trying not to drink Monday to Thursday at
- 4:53Speaker 1: the moment.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And how's that going for you?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Well, okay, mixed success. But last Monday I was at
- 5:00Speaker 1: the lounge at the International Lounge, flying to New Zealand
- 5:04Speaker 1: and it's like, well, what am I meant to do here?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Clearly I can't. It's not a Monday if you're at
- 5:09Speaker 1: an airport, right, it's no time, it's no day, it's
- 5:12Speaker 1: just wherever you are.
- 5:14Speaker 3: So international airport, let's be clear, because we all fly
- 5:17Speaker 3: far too much for that to.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Be a general rule.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yes, so I've seen enough of airports for a little while.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, not fair enough. Although you know you think about
- 5:26Speaker 2: like the barists. I've never had a good coffee at
- 5:29Speaker 2: an airport that I've had to pay for half from
- 5:32Speaker 2: Melbow Melbourne Airport.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Yeah like that you pay for you've had freebezy. Talking
- 5:37Speaker 3: about in the lounges and stuff.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not talking about the lounge like I've never
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know when you have to fly Jetstar or something
- 5:42Speaker 2: like that and there's no lounge option, and if you
- 5:44Speaker 2: come by yourself a coffee.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Melbourne's the only place because they've got a Saint Ali
- 5:48Speaker 3: as soon as you go in. And there's also a
- 5:50Speaker 3: campus at the domestic terminal in Melbourne, both of which
- 5:54Speaker 3: are frequent dripless.
- 5:55Speaker 2: You might not know this.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Catherine has her higher degree in coffee. If you ever
- 6:00Speaker 1: want to know where the good coffee is, Catherine Cox
- 6:03Speaker 1: is the person to tell you. And you know it's
- 6:06Speaker 1: we are in the presence of an expert.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I have the bean hunter out which has never steered
- 6:12Speaker 3: me wrong.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Ell, it's got me onto that years ago.
- 6:15Speaker 2: It's good. Yeah, it's good.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Oh no, I didn't. I mean it's so. I was
- 6:18Speaker 1: running late yesterday for my flight, so I didn't go
- 6:21Speaker 1: into the lounge and I just went up and said
- 6:23Speaker 1: can I take a coffee on board? And she said,
- 6:24Speaker 1: as long as it's got a lid on it. So
- 6:25Speaker 1: I went right now, I'll just go and buy a
- 6:27Speaker 1: coffee here seven dollars ten and a little bit of sad.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Later on it was like.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I do wonder though, if like when they do the
- 6:35Speaker 2: job interviews for the brewister at the airport. The first
- 6:37Speaker 2: question is can you make shit coffee?
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yes?
- 6:39Speaker 2: I can. Yes, There's an all press place at Sydney
- 6:44Speaker 2: Airport and I like all press beans. But somehow they
- 6:47Speaker 2: still managed to murder it. So I don't know what
- 6:50Speaker 2: it is, but I think if that's the criteria, that
- 6:53Speaker 2: you murder the beans, no matter how good the beans.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And there's a lot of breistas at the airports who
- 6:58Speaker 2: are killing that, they're doing very well.
- 7:00Speaker 1: When I was in high school, I have a friend
- 7:02Speaker 1: whose mother was very snobby. And this friend of mine,
- 7:05Speaker 1: who shall remain nameless, left her first husband and she
- 7:09Speaker 1: started going out with this younger guy and her mother
- 7:11Speaker 1: was very unhappy. So she told her mother he's a barrister.
- 7:16Speaker 1: He was a barista. She already met the coffee shop.
- 7:19Speaker 1: He's a barrister and she was happy.
- 7:23Speaker 3: And he makes a great cup of coffee as well.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Wish that could be potato potato right?
- 7:29Speaker 4: Oh?
- 7:29Speaker 2: I love it? I love it, Coxie. Can we have
- 7:31Speaker 2: an update? I know that Harper last week at post
- 7:35Speaker 2: Grand Finals of post finals celebrations may or may not
- 7:38Speaker 2: have drawn blood from her friend. Is there an update
- 7:41Speaker 2: on that?
- 7:41Speaker 3: It's bustard. She's having surgery on Thursday. Yeah, oh broken,
- 7:48Speaker 3: Because surgery is not cheap. They're going to a little
- 7:51Speaker 3: private hospital up the road. She did say, though, funnily enough,
- 7:55Speaker 3: that she's had this kid's had grommets when she was little,
- 7:58Speaker 3: and she also breathes with her mouth open, and I thought, oh,
- 8:01Speaker 3: I should get some of those stickers to put over
- 8:03Speaker 3: a mouth that we were talking about one app But
- 8:05Speaker 3: she went and saw that in those throats. Specials E
- 8:08Speaker 3: and T whatever they called. He did a check up
- 8:10Speaker 3: of it and one of her nostrils has actually got
- 8:12Speaker 3: more something in it that blocks her breed turbanets. I
- 8:15Speaker 3: think it is is courrect. Yes, So she's getting that
- 8:18Speaker 3: done at the same time, and I was like, fantastic.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Don't actually feel.
- 8:22Speaker 2: As bad You've solved a problem.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah. I was like, you're welcome, because they wouldn't have
- 8:25Speaker 3: found that had half a not busted her notes.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Oh that's true. But it did prompt some dribblers to
- 8:31Speaker 2: ask how I had broken your nose. Catherine and a
- 8:33Speaker 2: postgram final celebration, it was so very similar. It was
- 8:38Speaker 2: very very similar.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I don't think it was a handstand.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Well, well, the week before the Grand Final, my husband.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Julie had got Matthew to come in because my husband
- 8:46Speaker 2: was a rugby player and he's now, you know, coaches kids,
- 8:50Speaker 2: and she got him to come in and just do
- 8:53Speaker 2: some stuff with tackle pads, and so Matthew took that
- 8:56Speaker 2: a little bit too literally and taught us how to tackle.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And it did not help us in the Grand Final
- 9:02Speaker 2: because we lost that particular Grand Final. But was that
- 9:06Speaker 2: one of your no that was against Phoenix, who was
- 9:10Speaker 2: the precursor to the Vixen's And in the post grad
- 9:13Speaker 2: final celebrations, there was a big sort of party in
- 9:15Speaker 2: the foyer at Kudos Bank Arena and Catherine and I
- 9:19Speaker 2: must have had this thought about tackling Julie Fitzgerald at
- 9:21Speaker 2: the same time, and we both went to do it.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And as Katherine came from one angle and I came
- 9:26Speaker 2: from the other angle, mice fist swung around and collected
- 9:29Speaker 2: Catherine's nose. She came blood just gushing, and I had
- 9:36Speaker 2: had a few beers and I was like, I.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Just I think I remember saying at the time, thank
- 9:43Speaker 3: God I'm drunk.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Because this would really Julie completely. Julie was like this iceberg.
- 9:54Speaker 2: She just looked at us and gold caper and goal shooter,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and then that we both stood off and I had
- 9:59Speaker 2: blood all over my hand. It was Catherine's pot. Oh God,
- 10:02Speaker 2: Julie Fitzgerald.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So we had a surprise retirement party for her yesterday.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Fantastic because Jules godlover like she knew she was going
- 10:11Speaker 3: to retire at the end of the season. She had
- 10:13Speaker 3: her last game and I knew. So it was killing
- 10:17Speaker 3: me because all I wanted to do was talk about her,
- 10:19Speaker 3: celebrate her with the send off that she deserved right
- 10:23Speaker 3: twenty seven years of National League. But she was such
- 10:27Speaker 3: a class act right to the very end in that
- 10:28Speaker 3: she let Joe Harden, who was also retiring, have that time.
- 10:31Speaker 3: She didn't want to announce it and still any of
- 10:33Speaker 3: the spotlight. But after the game, I was chatting with
- 10:36Speaker 3: Jan Troy, who was the first ever manager of the Swifts,
- 10:38Speaker 3: and we just said, we can't let this slide, like,
- 10:41Speaker 3: she has to be celebrated. So at that point we
- 10:44Speaker 3: sust a date out that we could get all the
- 10:46Speaker 3: kids together first, because the Fitzgerald kids is a cast
- 10:48Speaker 3: of thousands, now locked all them in and then we
- 10:51Speaker 3: worked backwards so we had the surprise. Yesterday, she thought
- 10:55Speaker 3: she was going out for lunch with some friends and
- 10:57Speaker 3: they were just having a drink before lunch at the
- 10:59Speaker 3: bar that we're all hiding at, and she walked in,
- 11:02Speaker 3: and we're all supposed to just jump out and give
- 11:04Speaker 3: her a big surprise, but the grandkids could not help themselves,
- 11:07Speaker 3: and they just ran at us, and they one ran
- 11:09Speaker 3: at her and the next one ran at her. And
- 11:10Speaker 3: She's just looking at all these kids running at her, thinking,
- 11:13Speaker 3: what I know, these children? What are they doing here? Anyway,
- 11:17Speaker 3: So we did some speeches and we had a beautiful
- 11:20Speaker 3: video from Lee's that we showed because she couldn't be there.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Todd Miller did a great little tribute video as well.
- 11:25Speaker 3: But Julie spoke at the end and you forget where
- 11:30Speaker 3: the Swifts have come from. I mean, you look at
- 11:33Speaker 3: them now and there's such a powerhouse. Like if you
- 11:36Speaker 3: think of sporting clubs, they're one of the biggest. Certainly
- 11:39Speaker 3: netball that comes to my right. But Julie and Jan
- 11:44Speaker 3: sat on the lound room floor when they got told
- 11:47Speaker 3: that the National League was starting in nineteen ninety seven
- 11:49Speaker 3: and that all the teens had to be named after birds,
- 11:52Speaker 3: having an argument about which bird we would be the
- 11:55Speaker 3: two of them in the Lund room. That's where the
- 11:57Speaker 3: Swifts came from. Ah ow it because it's said that
- 12:01Speaker 3: they are super fast and they don't slow down when
- 12:05Speaker 3: they change direction. And Julie's like, love that. That sounds
- 12:09Speaker 3: like a great network.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Have gone with the sacred ibis actually with legs as
- 12:15Speaker 1: long as yours sacred chickens.
- 12:20Speaker 2: We have one of those get got by an eagle
- 12:22Speaker 2: at our place this week. So that was interesting, right anyway,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I digress, so interesting you talk about that, Catherine, because
- 12:28Speaker 2: subsequent to Julian Jan thinking about that and making the
- 12:31Speaker 2: pitch for one team to be called the Swifts, I
- 12:34Speaker 2: was at a meeting which was like they had a
- 12:36Speaker 2: heap of players there with Netborn New Southharres. This was
- 12:39Speaker 2: years ago. This was, yeah, a long long time ago,
- 12:43Speaker 2: and I'm talking about the fact that there were going
- 12:44Speaker 2: to be two Sydney teams, going to be the Sydney
- 12:47Speaker 2: Swifts and the Sydney something else. And a dear old
- 12:50Speaker 2: lady put a hand up and said, maybe one team
- 12:53Speaker 2: could be the Sydney Swifts and the other team could
- 12:55Speaker 2: be the Sydney Swallows.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And we'll have a rational team called.
- 13:08Speaker 3: The only when she's surprised, I do you know.
- 13:12Speaker 2: The hard thing was she was such a lovely old lady,
- 13:14Speaker 2: and I thought, I'm not going to explain to her
- 13:17Speaker 2: Wire Team can't make the Swallows like explained to your mother.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Wire Team cut as well as anyway. It never got
- 13:23Speaker 2: up in the other city. Team eventually became to Sydney Samdpipers.
- 13:26Speaker 2: But I just thought to myself, oh my god, lord,
- 13:29Speaker 2: that's just.
- 13:30Speaker 1: At this moment too for the Dribblers who liked to
- 13:33Speaker 1: listen to this podcast in the car with their daughters
- 13:35Speaker 1: and have fun with that.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But it was funny though, because not only did they
- 13:42Speaker 3: talk about the name, but just what they did.
- 13:44Speaker 2: At the start.
- 13:45Speaker 3: It was the two of them. They did everything, they
- 13:48Speaker 3: did the merchandise. Their kids then were on the stall
- 13:52Speaker 3: selling the merchandise. One of the kids was in the
- 13:55Speaker 3: Swift's costume as the mascot. They did the first sponsorship
- 13:59Speaker 3: pitch that went out just Julie, just jan and she
- 14:03Speaker 3: said all the money basically that they sold and they
- 14:05Speaker 3: made from the merchandise was what they wanted to top
- 14:09Speaker 3: us up with because we weren't paid. So they were
- 14:11Speaker 3: doing all this stuff in you know, Lieu of trying
- 14:14Speaker 3: to give us a little bit of extra cash on
- 14:15Speaker 3: the site. And Julie said it was funny because back
- 14:17Speaker 3: then winning the game was more important, or almost as important,
- 14:22Speaker 3: as how much merchandise, say had sold every.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Game, because they wanted to know how much money this
- 14:27Speaker 4: struggling club was earning. But it was just such a
- 14:30Speaker 4: great little reminder of you know, you see the swifts
- 14:32Speaker 4: now and you just forget two really passionate netball mums
- 14:37Speaker 4: started that out and look where it is now.
- 14:39Speaker 3: It's insane, it's amazing, so cool.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I had no idea of the breadth of Julie's skills,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and I'm seeing a little but time job for her
- 14:47Speaker 1: in the No Dribble Empire. She could sell merchant do
- 14:50Speaker 1: sponsorship deals and things on.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Her head, on her head. So when I first met
- 14:55Speaker 2: Julie and I told this story, I actually was an
- 14:58Speaker 2: eighteen year old kid fucking nineteen ninety one and I
- 15:02Speaker 2: was at under nineties New South Wales selections and I
- 15:05Speaker 2: think back then the coach wasn't a selector because the
- 15:07Speaker 2: selectors were sort of sitting around talking. We're all sitting
- 15:10Speaker 2: sort of up in the bench at the old and
- 15:11Speaker 2: Clark Center in Sydney, and this really nice lady started
- 15:15Speaker 2: talking to me and she was like, oh, you think
- 15:17Speaker 2: they'd be able to make up their mind and I
- 15:18Speaker 2: was like yeah, chatting away to her. And then at
- 15:22Speaker 2: the end they said and here's the team and here's
- 15:25Speaker 2: the coach up. And it was this nice lady that
- 15:28Speaker 2: I've been talking to, but at the time like she
- 15:31Speaker 2: was coaching the new South Wales under nineteens team. And
- 15:35Speaker 2: then I came back from the Institute of Sport and
- 15:37Speaker 2: I went and played with her Kareing Gay team. She
- 15:39Speaker 2: would turn up to training with four kids in toe
- 15:42Speaker 2: and I remember John, her youngest would have been three.
- 15:45Speaker 2: He just spent hours over a couple of years going
- 15:48Speaker 2: having one of those little trikes. He would just go
- 15:50Speaker 2: round and around the outdoor court that we used to
- 15:53Speaker 2: train on up at pinball. And so she was a
- 15:56Speaker 2: single mum with four kids. She had a job in
- 15:59Speaker 2: graphic design, like she used to do that for somebody,
- 16:02Speaker 2: and then she eventually ran Hornsby Basketball Association and she
- 16:06Speaker 2: was coaching us and she had a lot of help
- 16:08Speaker 2: from her mum who used to look after the kids.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And I live with her mum for a little while
- 16:12Speaker 2: when I came back to Sydney. But everything that she
- 16:16Speaker 2: gets out of the game now she absolutely deserves because
- 16:19Speaker 2: she did it so tough. And the thing that I
- 16:21Speaker 2: take away from her is I often think about what
- 16:24Speaker 2: would Julie do, not when I'm coaching, but when I'm
- 16:26Speaker 2: actually raising my kids, because she's got four superb children
- 16:31Speaker 2: now are all adult children, and she did it on
- 16:35Speaker 2: her own, like and she's amazing. So to have someone
- 16:38Speaker 2: like that in our lives, I'm so grateful for because
- 16:40Speaker 2: she's I couldn't tell you a single netball skill she
- 16:42Speaker 2: taught me even though she coached me for that long,
- 16:45Speaker 2: not because she didn't, because she taught me heaps, but
- 16:48Speaker 2: it's small that I think about now all the other
- 16:50Speaker 2: skills that she was teaching us at the same time.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah, but the kids are first hand witness to what
- 16:55Speaker 3: work ethic is all about, right, Yeah, because they are
- 16:57Speaker 3: all now prepared to do the h yards work their
- 17:01Speaker 3: butts off for There's two lawyers, a lawyer, a barrister
- 17:03Speaker 3: and a doctor.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And then a coffee making barrister or like a real one.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And John's into property, so I've I mean, they're all
- 17:12Speaker 3: absolutely killing it. Impressive humans.
- 17:14Speaker 2: But it was such a great.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Day anyhow, and good on you for making sure that
- 17:18Speaker 1: gets marked because I was so I was so touched
- 17:22Speaker 1: when Julie announced her retirement because I didn't know in advance,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but I knew immediately. Well, you haven't made this decision
- 17:29Speaker 1: in the last fifteen minutes. You've known this for a while,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and you just you let Joe have the stage. You
- 17:35Speaker 1: let the fans celebrate Joe and her career. So I
- 17:38Speaker 1: think that's really fabulous that you organized that.
- 17:41Speaker 3: It was cute.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Well done.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Yeah, well done, Elizabeth.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Yes, speaking of netball, what elst we're on the topic Friday.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Oh you talk to us about Friday real brace yourself.
- 18:06Speaker 2: That's for the Netball World Cup. So we launched the
- 18:09Speaker 2: Netball World Cup brand and imagery on Friday. By where
- 18:13Speaker 2: I mean actually the Mark Valveau and the team at
- 18:17Speaker 2: the Netball World Cup. So it's something that's been worked
- 18:20Speaker 2: on over the last several months and it just incorporates
- 18:23Speaker 2: so much great stuff. So you've got to make sure
- 18:25Speaker 2: that you've got a visual identity that is separate from
- 18:28Speaker 2: Super Netball. So really drawing on the World Cup imagery
- 18:32Speaker 2: and so that particular like the logo is very familiar,
- 18:36Speaker 2: but all the stuff that goes around that, so the
- 18:39Speaker 2: vision for the World Cup is braced yourself. The art
- 18:42Speaker 2: and the coloring around that is you know, there was
- 18:44Speaker 2: a heavy First Nations involvement, so Ginny Jones in collaboration
- 18:48Speaker 2: with the group called yarn Up have come up with
- 18:50Speaker 2: all the imagery around it. And I think it's beautiful.
- 18:52Speaker 2: It's really bright and it's really colorful and it was
- 18:54Speaker 2: so good to launch it in Sydney on Friday on
- 18:58Speaker 2: the harbor. It was a sparkle tackle the day. Yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 2: it was great with the Code hangar in the background.
- 19:03Speaker 2: And funny Steve Kemper, who's the new Southwest Minister for Sport,
- 19:06Speaker 2: he walked up and he goes, yeah, you know I
- 19:09Speaker 2: spoke to the right people about the weather for you.
- 19:11Speaker 2: They call me the Minister for Sunshine, so I was like,
- 19:16Speaker 2: thank you to the Minister for Sunshine for delivering. So look,
- 19:19Speaker 2: it was an amazing launch and the thing that I
- 19:21Speaker 2: loved was that the athletes were presented in a really
- 19:24Speaker 2: great way. You know, there was they looked unreal, didn't they. Yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 2: And they had all been dressed in a really striking way.
- 19:31Speaker 2: And you know, all the corporates that I spoke to
- 19:33Speaker 2: afterwards w were there were like, this is amazing. We
- 19:35Speaker 2: want to see more of this because like I walked
- 19:38Speaker 2: up to Mary Cholock and I had two thoughts, A,
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'm so happy I'm retired, and be she's so stunning, right,
- 19:46Speaker 2: And so these women are unbelievable athletes but could also
- 19:50Speaker 2: be catwarp models. They're amazing, right, They all came up
- 19:53Speaker 2: so well. So it was a really great way to
- 19:55Speaker 2: launch and to show that. It was a great way
- 19:57Speaker 2: to say that the Netball World Cup is about showcasing
- 20:00Speaker 2: the best of the best, and we're going to see
- 20:02Speaker 2: lots of different sides of these athletes. But at the
- 20:05Speaker 2: end of the day, you get a World Cup event
- 20:07Speaker 2: that's that's going to be different to a previous World
- 20:10Speaker 2: Cups event because there's a Cup and then the plate competition.
- 20:13Speaker 2: So the games I'm meaningful for longer all the way through,
- 20:16Speaker 2: which is fantastic. And you know, we get to see
- 20:19Speaker 2: best netballers in the world week in week out. In
- 20:22Speaker 2: super netball, we're so spoiled. But this time we get
- 20:24Speaker 2: in twenty twenty seven in Sydney, we'll get to see
- 20:27Speaker 2: them representing their countries and there's just something really special
- 20:30Speaker 2: about that. So yeah, it was a great day and
- 20:31Speaker 2: I thought all the imagery came up really well.
- 20:33Speaker 3: It was amazing. You could tell it was there so
- 20:35Speaker 3: much work put into it. Just looked so professional. You
- 20:38Speaker 3: could tell the girls had been styled for it looked.
- 20:41Speaker 3: It looked amazing. So well done to all of the team.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Thanks, I had nothing to do with it. I
- 20:45Speaker 2: just turned up and beg to get my hair and
- 20:47Speaker 2: makeup done, and you know, you looked good.
- 20:49Speaker 3: I like doing, you know.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 20:50Speaker 1: A quick question. I know I'd be able to find
- 20:52Speaker 1: this by googling, But is what time of year is
- 20:54Speaker 1: the is the World Cup is the same sort of
- 20:56Speaker 1: time of year as the Calm Game? So are we're
- 20:58Speaker 1: looking at it the following year, likely to in early
- 21:00Speaker 1: super Netwole season again to fit that in.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Or to be a little bit later than the common game.
- 21:04Speaker 2: So the comm games I think at the end of
- 21:06Speaker 2: July start next year, so that's a little bit later.
- 21:08Speaker 3: So all you want is free dates in your calendar.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Don't you want a little bit of a heads up
- 21:13Speaker 3: to get your life in order.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I plan, I plan quite far ahead. Things yeah, I get.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It's one of my superpowers, but also one of my
- 21:22Speaker 1: annoying characteristics. I understand this well, good person to ask
- 21:26Speaker 1: that was the boss of it.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Indeed, look, I don't actually know that much, to be honest,
- 21:30Speaker 2: I just sort of go and talk to people.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Okay, well, what do you know about broadcast?
- 21:33Speaker 4: Deal?
- 21:33Speaker 3: Because there's a lot of chat around that. Can you
- 21:36Speaker 3: give us anything? The dribblers want information?
- 21:40Speaker 2: What sort of I'm just I've just worked this out
- 21:42Speaker 2: because I did google net by Walker. I don't want
- 21:45Speaker 2: to say a dating case, I got it wrong, sot.
- 21:46Speaker 2: That's in the twenty fifth of August to the fifth
- 21:48Speaker 2: of September.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Very good to the fifth twenty fifth of AUGUSTA don't
- 21:54Speaker 3: come something you said, Yeah, don't go at my diary
- 21:58Speaker 3: in case something comes up anyone watching from our time.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I love that you too, think you're so popular. So
- 22:04Speaker 1: I'm just saying that's exciting. My son will have finished
- 22:08Speaker 1: high school at the end of next year, so I'm
- 22:10Speaker 1: looking like I've got a pretty good chauffeur for that period. Right, perfect, nice, good,
- 22:16Speaker 1: well play. I'll drive over here and then we can
- 22:18Speaker 1: go together. Right, he could go and pick you up
- 22:22Speaker 1: worry about it home. Okay, So I think the question
- 22:26Speaker 1: is around broadcast deal is benefits of free too are
- 22:29Speaker 1: versus going with a subscriber channel like Fox tell how
- 22:33Speaker 1: much of you know? I don't know shit? Is that
- 22:38Speaker 1: enough questions? But yeah, I think it's more a general
- 22:41Speaker 1: understanding of how does this work from Netball Australia's perspective,
- 22:44Speaker 1: what's in the best interest of the sport.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's a bit of an iterative process that
- 22:51Speaker 2: Netball Australia is going through at the moment with all
- 22:53Speaker 2: the broadcasters that we're talking to, and that is the
- 22:56Speaker 2: balance that has to be weighed up. If you sit
- 22:58Speaker 2: behind a payball, this potentially more money. So if you're
- 23:01Speaker 2: on Fox or Paramount or Stan or any of those,
- 23:05Speaker 2: or Netflix or Amazon you know they're all Disney, ESPN,
- 23:09Speaker 2: you've got to go and sort of see what's available there,
- 23:11Speaker 2: and there generally is more money if you sit behind
- 23:13Speaker 2: a paywall. If you go to free to wear, the
- 23:15Speaker 2: money is less, but the reach is better, right And
- 23:17Speaker 2: so potentially if you do that then you might get
- 23:21Speaker 2: less money from your broadcast deal, but you might be
- 23:23Speaker 2: able to end up with more money from your sponsorship
- 23:25Speaker 2: deals for example. So it's not an either or and
- 23:28Speaker 2: it's not black and white. There's a lot that has
- 23:29Speaker 2: to go into it. So Steph Beltrami is leading that
- 23:32Speaker 2: process for us. She was involved in the cricket deal
- 23:35Speaker 2: a few years ago, so she's got extensive experience in this.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Which was an amazing change, wasn't it Because nine had
- 23:42Speaker 1: had the cricket for decades and they owned the cricket
- 23:45Speaker 1: and it has swapped in that deal. So that must
- 23:47Speaker 1: have been a really interesting negotiation.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's super interesting. And when you sort of, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 2: sit and talk to her about it, the machinations are
- 23:54Speaker 2: just unbelievable. And you know, so she's sort of seen
- 23:58Speaker 2: it and done it before. The experience is which is fantastic,
- 24:01Speaker 2: and I think it's so great for the organization to
- 24:03Speaker 2: have her doing this for us. And at the moment,
- 24:06Speaker 2: it's just about talking to all the broadcasters to see
- 24:10Speaker 2: who's interested at what level of interest. There's a possibility
- 24:13Speaker 2: that parts of it might be split up, so you
- 24:15Speaker 2: might have some games behind a paywall, some on freeedomy.
- 24:19Speaker 3: So that's what I was going to ask you, because
- 24:20Speaker 3: a lot of the sports do that now, don't they.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not crickets. Yeah, and if you think back
- 24:25Speaker 2: to the last the broadcast deal before the current ones
- 24:28Speaker 2: with nine, two games a week were live on nine
- 24:33Speaker 2: and two games a week were live on I think
- 24:36Speaker 2: was it Telstra TV or was the app or something
- 24:38Speaker 2: like that, and then they got after they were done
- 24:41Speaker 2: live on that, then they got uploaded to nine. Now
- 24:44Speaker 2: you could watch them on delay a little while later.
- 24:46Speaker 2: So this Fox Cell deal has been the first time
- 24:49Speaker 2: that all the games in super Netball have been on live,
- 24:54Speaker 2: so you know there's that component which is really valuable
- 24:57Speaker 2: as well. And Fox have been a terrific partner. Despite
- 25:00Speaker 2: their choice of Catherine Cox it's a commentator, I don't
- 25:02Speaker 2: know about that. They've been amazing. Yeah, right, So, but
- 25:05Speaker 2: so that that's been terrific. So now we just have
- 25:07Speaker 2: to work out what the next iteration is and you know,
- 25:10Speaker 2: lots of people have opinions it should all be I'm
- 25:12Speaker 2: free to wear, but there's also bills to pay, right,
- 25:15Speaker 2: so you've got to work out where you can be
- 25:17Speaker 2: and what's what's the best best for the sports. So
- 25:21Speaker 2: but you know, hopefully by the end of this year
- 25:23Speaker 2: we'll know what the broadcast deal from twenty twenty seven
- 25:26Speaker 2: looks like so where with Fox Now it's the same
- 25:29Speaker 2: again for twenty twenty six and the next deal starts
- 25:31Speaker 2: at the start of twenty twenty seven.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Yep, right, very exciting. Do you might not know this,
- 25:36Speaker 1: but I'm just interested in Steph. Do you like is
- 25:39Speaker 1: that a law background? Like what what's the skill set?
- 25:42Speaker 1: And obviously you know her expertise is that she has
- 25:46Speaker 1: done this for other sports, but it's like commerce background accounting, Like,
- 25:49Speaker 1: how do you like, how does someone get into a
- 25:51Speaker 1: job like that? Do you know?
- 25:52Speaker 2: Oh, do you know what? There's lots of ways into
- 25:54Speaker 2: that sort of job and there's lots of people who
- 25:55Speaker 2: do it. And so Steph really spent a long time
- 25:58Speaker 2: in the commercial area cricket Australia and she sort of
- 26:01Speaker 2: and then worked heavily in this broadcast rights negotiation. So
- 26:06Speaker 2: there are people who come in from a commercial background.
- 26:08Speaker 2: There are people who come into these sort of roles
- 26:11Speaker 2: and come through sporting organizations who might be like start
- 26:14Speaker 2: off with a teachers or sports science, have a sports
- 26:16Speaker 2: science background, and then come into sports organizations and pick
- 26:19Speaker 2: up the commercial skills as they go. I know there
- 26:21Speaker 2: are other people who do this work who have a
- 26:23Speaker 2: broadcasting background, for example, have worked for one of the
- 26:26Speaker 2: Freeedoware channels and you know as producers or in the
- 26:29Speaker 2: commercial area there, and then they come into work on
- 26:31Speaker 2: the sports side. So you know, there's a lot of
- 26:34Speaker 2: ways into it. And like I said, you don't do
- 26:36Speaker 2: a degree in broadcast negotiations. You enter into either a
- 26:39Speaker 2: broadcast or to into a sports organization and you sort
- 26:43Speaker 2: of climb through the ranks that way. With the end
- 26:45Speaker 2: of the day, there's a skill to negotiate that very interesting.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Yeah, when I was a sponsorship manager at the Brumbies,
- 26:50Speaker 1: I had come from a government relations background, so I'd
- 26:53Speaker 1: never worked in sport before, but I had worked for government.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I do have a while we're talking about business book
- 27:00Speaker 1: here foolish words, the most stupid words ever spoken. I
- 27:03Speaker 1: want you to remember this Netball Australia. I don't know
- 27:07Speaker 1: is this a person we want to take advice from.
- 27:09Speaker 1: The point is that you can't be too greedy and
- 27:13Speaker 1: those are the words of the leader of the free
- 27:15Speaker 1: world at the moment, Donald Pump. So take from that
- 27:18Speaker 1: what you will, but certainly good place in this book
- 27:21Speaker 1: for someone.
- 27:21Speaker 2: The point is you can't be too greedy. I'll feed
- 27:24Speaker 2: that into the team. Yeah, that's great.
- 27:27Speaker 1: So leadership quotes? You know a bit about leadership quotes?
- 27:30Speaker 1: Has anyone been asking you for a leadership quotes recently?
- 27:32Speaker 3: Well?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Funny that you meant to that. And you know that
- 27:35Speaker 2: because my daughter just as we start this podcast you
- 27:38Speaker 2: started recording. There's a thing that came through from her.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I've got a text message, do you know any good
- 27:44Speaker 2: quotes about leadership? And I've drafted this and I don't
- 27:48Speaker 2: know whether to press send. I'd like your input. Yes,
- 27:51Speaker 2: a good leader, let's sair children do their own research?
- 27:54Speaker 3: Nice? Yes, I love send? Why are you walking? No?
- 28:00Speaker 3: And then send back your favorite quote of all time?
- 28:02Speaker 3: There's no iron team, but there's two in le Zellas.
- 28:08Speaker 2: There's also a.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Much less PG version of that she uses too, isn't there?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yes, well, a good leader, let's say children do their
- 28:15Speaker 2: own research. Yeah, you can make your own PG version
- 28:18Speaker 2: of that. There is no I love that's gold. But
- 28:22Speaker 2: I'm going to write that. Can you two talk amongst
- 28:24Speaker 2: yourselves while I'm sending this text message back to my daughter?
- 28:26Speaker 3: Yeah, but let us know where the final draft land.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Can I please request? We haven't done it for a while,
- 28:34Speaker 3: but before we finish, I must do a win beneath
- 28:36Speaker 3: our wings. I would love that because the wonderful Michelle
- 28:38Speaker 3: Troy Lizellis was at Julie's function yesterday and she gave
- 28:44Speaker 3: me one ages ago and I have been so slack,
- 28:47Speaker 3: and I said to oh my god, I'll do it.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I'll do it this week. I'll do it this week.
- 28:50Speaker 3: So Hi'm Michelle, I'm doing it soon.
- 28:53Speaker 2: So we will do that.
- 28:53Speaker 1: At the end, I will just now say there is
- 28:56Speaker 1: one week left to get your let's go to pub
- 28:59Speaker 1: match so that they will close midnight on the fifteenth
- 29:02Speaker 1: of September, So get around that. There's some very nice
- 29:06Speaker 1: stuff in there.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I love the one you're wearing now, thank you.
- 29:10Speaker 1: This is the Raglin and it runs slightly large. This
- 29:13Speaker 1: is a medium. I wish I'd gone with the small,
- 29:14Speaker 1: but yeah, I really like this one. That's part of
- 29:18Speaker 1: that normal range, which will still be on sale on
- 29:21Speaker 1: the sixteenth of September.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Great, and why you two have been filling in. I've
- 29:25Speaker 2: actually sent her a couple. There is no iron team
- 29:27Speaker 2: but two in zealous but I've also sent her another one.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Let's pull together and do it my way. I love it,
- 29:34Speaker 2: and I might just suite another one later. This is
- 29:37Speaker 2: a dictatorship, not a democracy, so there's an indication of,
- 29:40Speaker 2: you know, of how I might lead in my family
- 29:42Speaker 2: At almost Beautiful, it's myself.
- 29:44Speaker 3: If she uses those genuinely thinking that they're good, mom
- 29:48Speaker 3: wouldn't steer me wrong.
- 29:50Speaker 1: It's quite I think, a reflection on our parenting standards.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I flicked around a video that we all enjoyed on
- 29:55Speaker 1: the weekend wasn't and it was just a montage of
- 29:58Speaker 1: children just getting hammered by animals. I'm not over by goats.
- 30:02Speaker 3: And the one, the one that made me my pants,
- 30:05Speaker 3: the spider was that yours?
- 30:07Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yes, So this is like one of those kids parties,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and I wish, why do kids get this? I would
- 30:12Speaker 1: love to go to a party where it like a
- 30:13Speaker 1: reptile party or something where someone in a very safe
- 30:16Speaker 1: environment says, do you want to hold this snake? Or
- 30:18Speaker 1: you know, let's learn about this shingleback or whatever. But
- 30:21Speaker 1: this was spiders by the looks of things. And there
- 30:23Speaker 1: was a large tarantula in a perspex box and this
- 30:26Speaker 1: person's walking around showing the little kids stumbles, had the
- 30:31Speaker 1: box open sept This just tarantula falls on this poor
- 30:36Speaker 1: little three year old.
- 30:38Speaker 3: It was the person filming it.
- 30:42Speaker 2: The camera went all over the ship.
- 30:43Speaker 3: They obviously shipped their pants as well. But it was
- 30:46Speaker 3: a tarantula, like it wasn't a little spider, big hairy beast.
- 30:50Speaker 1: That kid's still in theery.
- 30:53Speaker 2: I was pussy.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I just love that stuff when animals and kids come
- 30:57Speaker 3: face to face and the kit ends up on the
- 31:00Speaker 3: good end of it.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I wonder what it says about us, say, because I
- 31:03Speaker 2: watched these and laugh, and then I go to the
- 31:05Speaker 2: comments and people are like, you shouldn't laugh. People got hurt,
- 31:09Speaker 2: you shouldn't laugh, blah blah blah blah. Oh I'm a
- 31:11Speaker 2: really bad human, but we're all of us. Three are
- 31:14Speaker 2: bad humans.
- 31:14Speaker 3: How about the one where the kid was running up
- 31:16Speaker 3: the hill being chased by geese was stairical.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Geese are nasty though, And the little girl who got
- 31:25Speaker 2: who got beat in the head. I got beat in
- 31:27Speaker 2: the head by a black swan when I was five,
- 31:28Speaker 2: and I've never ever forgotten it. It was awful, but
- 31:31Speaker 2: I still laughed.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Oh, this is interesting conversation. Then have you had a
- 31:34Speaker 3: close encounter that's going to write?
- 31:36Speaker 1: Not that I can think of. I mean, obviously sweeped
- 31:39Speaker 1: by magpies and isn't that the topical horrifying conversation at
- 31:43Speaker 1: the moment? No, have you ever been well?
- 31:46Speaker 3: And Mum told me this story recently and I've forgotten
- 31:48Speaker 3: about it. But when we first moved to Australia, we
- 31:50Speaker 3: were living out in the Northwest where the Koala Park is,
- 31:54Speaker 3: and we went to the Koala Park and she said
- 31:56Speaker 3: one of the kangaroos took a liking to me and
- 31:59Speaker 3: had me like wrapped up and they were all freaking out,
- 32:04Speaker 3: just waiting for it to either kick or do whatever
- 32:07Speaker 3: it was going to do. And she said, My face was, oh,
- 32:10Speaker 3: this is nice. I'm having a cuddle. To the moment
- 32:12Speaker 3: that I started to see all the staff kind of
- 32:14Speaker 3: try to work out how to get me out of it,
- 32:16Speaker 3: and then I lost it. They're all, no, steak, come here,
- 32:19Speaker 3: you go, stake bloody How I'm not slightly traumatized by
- 32:23Speaker 3: that at all?
- 32:24Speaker 1: No, so funny, but I took Loss to Tarankazoo when
- 32:27Speaker 1: we were when he was little, we used to have
- 32:29Speaker 1: the zoo pass, which was great. You just go and
- 32:31Speaker 1: you get so good, go for an hour and you know,
- 32:33Speaker 1: it fills half the day or whatever. But there was
- 32:36Speaker 1: a school group having a talk from one of the
- 32:38Speaker 1: rangers and we just sort of sat in the back
- 32:40Speaker 1: and I gave him a sandwich and the next thing,
- 32:43Speaker 1: this EMU comes in between. This EMI's head comes in
- 32:46Speaker 1: between the two of us, and he's only about three.
- 32:48Speaker 1: It's like they're quite freaking up close. It didn't do anything,
- 32:51Speaker 1: just looked at our sandwich and it's like, yeah, please
- 32:55Speaker 1: go away.
- 32:56Speaker 3: We have had one of those pettings, not a petting zoo,
- 32:58Speaker 3: but the ones you would just talking about the fort
- 33:01Speaker 3: recently and they had a massive python, talking massive. There
- 33:05Speaker 3: was three adults holding it and my one rule was
- 33:09Speaker 3: I'm down the other end. I'm not up the head end,
- 33:12Speaker 3: so I was holding its tail. Those things are so
- 33:16Speaker 3: heavy and so scary. Even they're like, oh no, they're
- 33:19Speaker 3: really gentle. Would you pat what would you hold what?
- 33:22Speaker 1: In that type of environment? I think I would like,
- 33:24Speaker 1: I'm not a big snake fan. I don't think that
- 33:26Speaker 1: makes me unusual, but it's like I'm quite fascinated by them.
- 33:30Speaker 1: But they go, oh, just let's have it for the kids.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I know to tell with the kids, they've got many
- 33:35Speaker 1: years to learn about animals and conquer their fears.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Did you have snake encounters in the jungle? Is?
- 33:41Speaker 2: Yeah? Actually I had one that never didn't make the
- 33:43Speaker 2: cart spilling because I was so brave. So we had
- 33:46Speaker 2: this challenge this one day. They gave us the challenge.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I said, you're not allowed to react to anything, and
- 33:51Speaker 2: if you get through the day without reacting to anything,
- 33:53Speaker 2: you get I don't know, a packet of the team
- 33:54Speaker 2: or something at the end, right I tap out.
- 33:57Speaker 1: We had we had if people gave you the shitsh
- 34:00Speaker 1: that's unreasonable.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Well, one of the things that they did was one
- 34:02Speaker 2: of the first things they did was Dicko had got
- 34:04Speaker 2: vaded out the day before and they got him to
- 34:07Speaker 2: walk in and he'd had a shower and he was clean,
- 34:11Speaker 2: and he walked in. He must have had a like
- 34:14Speaker 2: he had a tray of biscuits or he had a
- 34:17Speaker 2: tray of food and he was trying to get us
- 34:19Speaker 2: to eat it. And he was like like he was
- 34:21Speaker 2: walking up offering us food and saying, Hi, guys, how
- 34:23Speaker 2: are you going. It's so great to see him. We'd
- 34:25Speaker 2: literally just spent three weeks with him and he was
- 34:28Speaker 2: someone who I connected with and I was like, I
- 34:30Speaker 2: can't believe. I kind of inspect him and say hi,
- 34:33Speaker 2: and then he's food under his I was like, oh
- 34:35Speaker 2: my god. So we none of us reacted to him,
- 34:38Speaker 2: and he skipped out and we knew he was skipping
- 34:40Speaker 2: out for a beer, which even heard us even more.
- 34:42Speaker 2: But then I had to go up into the top
- 34:44Speaker 2: TALKI where they do you interview? Like you went on
- 34:46Speaker 2: one interview and while I was sitting, they were talking
- 34:49Speaker 2: to me one of the rains, So what was that
- 34:51Speaker 2: word you used?
- 34:51Speaker 1: You had to go into the what it's called a
- 34:53Speaker 1: top TALKI right, and okay, as in to talk as
- 34:56Speaker 1: he picked.
- 34:57Speaker 2: So it's like a little like a little shed with
- 35:01Speaker 2: cameras in it and you can't see who you're talking
- 35:04Speaker 2: to you but you can hear them, right, So you
- 35:05Speaker 2: go and they talk to and there's a micro you
- 35:07Speaker 2: got your microphone and you have a conversation and one
- 35:10Speaker 2: of the rangers came in. When the South African rangers
- 35:13Speaker 2: came in with his massive snake, and he's stuck it
- 35:16Speaker 2: on my shoulders and I, oh, I wasn't allowed to react,
- 35:20Speaker 2: so I just had to keep the conversation going. And
- 35:23Speaker 2: this snake just slid across me and sell it down,
- 35:26Speaker 2: and I could see I've had to keep looking, but
- 35:28Speaker 2: I could see out of the corner of my eye
- 35:30Speaker 2: like this little snake head like look not how much
- 35:34Speaker 2: we came out, Nne Catherine, I do my keygels and yes,
- 35:40Speaker 2: so but I just sat there. I just knew I
- 35:44Speaker 2: had to be calm because I knew that if I
- 35:45Speaker 2: lost my shit, that's when the snake, that's when things
- 35:48Speaker 2: get agitated. And like the ranger was there in front
- 35:51Speaker 2: of me, so that like there's a safety element they're
- 35:53Speaker 2: looking at. Anyway, I just and then eventually just slither
- 35:55Speaker 2: it off me and they said you can go, and
- 35:58Speaker 2: I just got up and walked out. And then they
- 35:59Speaker 2: got in there, and he hated it because when he
- 36:03Speaker 2: walked in, the snake was on the seat and he
- 36:05Speaker 2: had to sit on the seat like the snake was
- 36:08Speaker 2: and you know, he's English and snakes sort of own
- 36:12Speaker 2: a thing that he might like. So yeah, so that
- 36:14Speaker 2: was that was pretty funny. So that was the only snake.
- 36:17Speaker 2: And you know what all I cared about was that
- 36:19Speaker 2: I didn't end up, you know the viper room where
- 36:20Speaker 2: they put people underground. Yes, and it wasn't for the snakes.
- 36:25Speaker 2: It was I don't like the idea of being a
- 36:28Speaker 2: favorite like that. So I was like anyway, and about
- 36:31Speaker 2: like they kept asking before I went in, like in
- 36:33Speaker 2: the months before I before we started, what are you
- 36:36Speaker 2: most afraid of? And I thought, I'm not letting on it.
- 36:39Speaker 2: That's what I'm most afraid off. So I just kept saying,
- 36:42Speaker 2: telling you, I know I'm not telling you, So I
- 36:44Speaker 2: just kept saying I'm most afraid of getting hurt because
- 36:47Speaker 2: I you know, because I've got kids and I'm not
- 36:49Speaker 2: telling you one. But for having said that though, when
- 36:53Speaker 2: we moved up here, I was terrified of snakes and
- 36:56Speaker 2: Matthew was like, they don't come into your room and
- 36:59Speaker 2: like pull you out of bed, like they're not. As
- 37:01Speaker 2: long as you stay out of their way, They're absolutely
- 37:04Speaker 2: not going to go anywhere near you. And then about
- 37:06Speaker 2: three months after.
- 37:07Speaker 1: We moved stay out of them away by going to Sydney.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Well do you know what the snakes in Sydney are
- 37:11Speaker 2: dressed in suits? I think it's sister, yes, whereas the
- 37:16Speaker 2: snakes here.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Again with Catherine's dating life.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, about three months after we moved up here,
- 37:24Speaker 2: there was a family not far from us, and the
- 37:26Speaker 2: mother heard the cat making a weird noise and it
- 37:29Speaker 2: was in her kid's room. When she walked into her
- 37:31Speaker 2: baby's room and there was a snake in the like
- 37:34Speaker 2: with the baby was a python, So they're not they're
- 37:37Speaker 2: not poisonous. Pythons aren't poisonous. But it was just what
- 37:39Speaker 2: was going to do to strangle it either, No, I
- 37:41Speaker 2: think it was just trying to get warm. Anyway, Oh
- 37:44Speaker 2: my god, I said to Matthew. See they do come
- 37:46Speaker 2: into your room and they do pull you out of
- 37:48Speaker 2: your bed, pick on your little ones.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Oh, I said, I didn't need to know that story.
- 37:52Speaker 1: So just on phobias. I'm a good flyer, having had
- 37:55Speaker 1: six flights last week. But Wellington in New Zealand, as
- 37:58Speaker 1: you know, had a rotation for being deep and we
- 38:00Speaker 1: flew from Nelson to Wellington and we had received notifications
- 38:05Speaker 1: a day before there's going to be some weather and
- 38:06Speaker 1: we're on this Dash eight, so it's it's quite a
- 38:09Speaker 1: little a little fly and we're coming in and it's rugged.
- 38:12Speaker 1: You could feel, you know, the pilot battling against the wind.
- 38:15Speaker 1: But this poor woman who was sitting across the aisle
- 38:18Speaker 1: from mom, and I was incredibly nervous, and any time
- 38:22Speaker 1: there was a there was a dip, she was like
- 38:24Speaker 1: and she had a kid with her who was about
- 38:26Speaker 1: nine and obviously trying so hard to stay calm for
- 38:30Speaker 1: her daughter, but was incredibly free to She's biting this
- 38:35Speaker 1: magazine that she had with her just to try to
- 38:37Speaker 1: stay calm for thing. And it's just like, oh man,
- 38:41Speaker 1: there's no there's no dignity in the situation like that.
- 38:46Speaker 1: All no. But we landed and everyone clapped like it
- 38:49Speaker 1: was the.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Isn't that funny? Yeah, they do that sometimes when it's
- 38:53Speaker 3: a tough landing, like oh well, duly here and alive.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Come fly with me, let's fly, let's lie away here
- 39:03Speaker 2: for you can you.
- 39:04Speaker 1: So we're going to be running out of time. But
- 39:06Speaker 1: there's a couple of things. We promised last week that
- 39:08Speaker 1: we would talk about off season activities for kids. I
- 39:11Speaker 1: want to talk about where we might have future Sun
- 39:15Speaker 1: Corpse super Netball teams located. Because Darryl Milton, celebrity stepdad
- 39:20Speaker 1: of the podcast, put up a great post in the
- 39:22Speaker 1: group last week, they got a lot of chat about
- 39:24Speaker 1: you know, where should it be. Obviously, Jemong's making a planner,
- 39:26Speaker 1: so I reckon, we talk about that one next week,
- 39:29Speaker 1: but there was a request. I think we push off
- 39:32Speaker 1: talking about off season for kids until next week. But
- 39:35Speaker 1: we apparently we didn't talk about the Thunderbirds last week.
- 39:39Speaker 1: You forgot they existed.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I did.
- 39:41Speaker 1: How did they go in the signings season? I reckon
- 39:43Speaker 1: getting mirror Sterling Humphrey not pregnant, that's that would be
- 39:48Speaker 1: in Let's.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Just take that if those in you thinks so greedy?
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah, God, what do they want?
- 39:53Speaker 3: Who else did they pick up? I'm having a mental blank.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Oh they got Kate.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Heffernan, hefn and oursel Maury Vanderberg.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Yeah, Kate Heffernan. I don't know much about Vanderberg. I'm
- 40:01Speaker 3: intrigued to see how she slots in there. Going to
- 40:04Speaker 3: have to stand up and all eyes will be on
- 40:07Speaker 3: her in this Test series against the Proteus because that's
- 40:09Speaker 3: the first team Australia is going to be playing at
- 40:11Speaker 3: the start of October, and I reckon people will be
- 40:14Speaker 3: staring her down to see what they're up against next year.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Great chance to do some reconnaissance if you're the other
- 40:20Speaker 3: club coaches.
- 40:21Speaker 2: But also buy some tickets Nick and see her play.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Yeah, totally but Kate heaven and I think is going
- 40:26Speaker 3: to be a massive, massive one for them to fill
- 40:29Speaker 3: the gap of Hannah Petty, huge, great pickup. So yeah,
- 40:34Speaker 3: Kaiate Thunderbirds fans, you're right now.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Guys, but it is I guess this is the other thing.
- 40:40Speaker 1: You know, we've talked about the pros and cons of
- 40:42Speaker 1: having the international players come into the comp I've got
- 40:44Speaker 1: to say them signing Elmare Vanderberg makes me go, oh,
- 40:48Speaker 1: I'm much more interested in this Diamond series against South
- 40:50Speaker 1: as exactly that reason that it's sort of like what
- 40:54Speaker 1: are we going to be seeing from these unknown quantities?
- 40:57Speaker 1: So we're sorry Thunderbirds fan, but there you go.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Liz.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Do you have anything to add on the Thunderbirds front?
- 41:05Speaker 2: No, only about Kate Heffernan. Do you know she's she
- 41:08Speaker 2: played for New Zealand and cricket too. Cricket, Yeah yeah,
- 41:13Speaker 2: and sister, I really have a problem with athletes who
- 41:15Speaker 2: are good at two sports.
- 41:16Speaker 1: They shit me, isn't it insane how frequently it happens? Though,
- 41:20Speaker 1: Like you know, Elise Perry was what cricket and she
- 41:24Speaker 1: and Matilda Yeah, you know, there's there's these cross code
- 41:29Speaker 1: I mean, but people who go I will learn a
- 41:31Speaker 1: new sport like Swift's far at Verity Simmons, who I
- 41:35Speaker 1: absolutely loved watching, and I didn't realize that she hadn't
- 41:38Speaker 1: grown up in an AFL house, so when she went
- 41:40Speaker 1: to AFL, it's sort of like, I'm just learning all
- 41:42Speaker 1: of this from scratch. I think that's incredible.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yeah, anyways, doesn't it. It was never a problem for
- 41:49Speaker 2: Catherine and I that we had to choose. Don't have
- 41:51Speaker 2: a good at one sport?
- 41:54Speaker 1: Well, i'll tell you what. Who's had to make some choices.
- 41:56Speaker 1: This week, Bob Jarvis played in a preliminary final Unfortuate.
- 42:00Speaker 1: They got bundled out, played wing defense and then go shitter.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Yeah that's tough.
- 42:06Speaker 2: That's tough at all.
- 42:08Speaker 3: No, Yeah, I like to know what the stats were.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Well, she got one in, I hear not one in
- 42:13Speaker 1: the better than none bar. The fourth quarter for the
- 42:15Speaker 1: Shamrocks might not have been the most competitive one. I
- 42:18Speaker 1: think that they had they stayed in the game until.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Until they were barbing shit.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Well, I think by then they might have gone, Okay,
- 42:25Speaker 1: well this is gone for us.
- 42:27Speaker 3: Put on your bar. One is better than none?
- 42:29Speaker 1: Well, absolutely, yeah, absolutely, even that.
- 42:31Speaker 3: You're happy to have it a crack and then I
- 42:32Speaker 3: see they poured all the wasn't gatoray, but they gave
- 42:35Speaker 3: her a big drenching afterwards.
- 42:36Speaker 1: All the water bottles. Good to say, love her.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Okay, we're beneath our wings.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Time, guys.
- 42:41Speaker 3: I think I have to get this done for Michelle Troy.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Why she will fully rouse me in. And we don't
- 42:46Speaker 3: need Missus Troy rousing at us either. We've been roused
- 42:50Speaker 3: out by Missus Troy a few times.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Sorry before you did that, I'm just going to I've
- 42:53Speaker 2: got a message back from my daughter. That's not very helpful.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I'm glad she was maybe not in this moment, but
- 43:01Speaker 1: in the long term her development will be improved.
- 43:04Speaker 2: This is true.
- 43:04Speaker 3: All right, here we go. This is our wind, beneath
- 43:07Speaker 3: our wings. It's been a long time between rings. You're scrunchy.
- 43:10Speaker 3: If it's not disintegrated already is coming your way with
- 43:13Speaker 3: some big shoes to fill. Our new president of Blaming
- 43:16Speaker 3: Netble Association had a big task ahead, but with an
- 43:19Speaker 3: never say die attitude, Emma Green has worked tirelessly to
- 43:22Speaker 3: fundraise and recruit sponsors for a little association. This year,
- 43:26Speaker 3: We've had new uniform specialist coaching sessions of the first
- 43:29Speaker 3: time players at State got to experience being part of
- 43:32Speaker 3: the athlete village. Emma is humble in her achievements, but
- 43:35Speaker 3: in such a short space of time, the results on
- 43:38Speaker 3: court have been amazing. A special shout out to the
- 43:41Speaker 3: under fifteens who came equal fourth for blamey, isn't it
- 43:47Speaker 3: well done? Guys. With an amazing committee behind her, country
- 43:50Speaker 3: netble is in safe hands and the future looks great.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Thank you to the selflessness of Emma Greenman Michelle great work.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Very first wind beneath our wings was from Orange Netball Association.
- 44:05Speaker 1: So you know, we might see some carnivals out that
- 44:07Speaker 1: way with quite a number of scrunchies being sported.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Which I love with them.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Two number.
- 44:15Speaker 1: That's quite a number, I'll have you know. Yeah. Also
- 44:18Speaker 1: one is also quite an It's not quite a large number,
- 44:21Speaker 1: but good sorry, Barb will tell you one's quite a number.
- 44:27Speaker 1: So in comedy that's called a callback. Very well done,
- 44:30Speaker 1: Thank you, Catherine.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Good work.
- 44:31Speaker 1: So next week we'll talk about our season activities for kids,
- 44:34Speaker 1: or maybe we'll just keep pushing this back out every
- 44:36Speaker 1: week until eternity. But yeah, this is I think that
- 44:40Speaker 1: we've had a we've had a bloody good episode. We
- 44:43Speaker 1: have always a body good episode. We need to go
- 44:45Speaker 1: and practice our pelvic floor muscle exercises. If you're on
- 44:48Speaker 1: a plane this week, don't feel the need to put
- 44:50Speaker 1: your seat back on a short haul flight. That's okay.
- 44:53Speaker 1: You can have your seat upright. That's what we can
- 44:56Speaker 1: all manage.
- 44:56Speaker 3: That sounds like it happened a few times. My god.
- 44:59Speaker 1: You know in New Zealand A Zealand flights, you can't
- 45:00Speaker 1: recline your seats on this short haul international. Yeah, I
- 45:04Speaker 1: think so too. I mean, I do like to take
- 45:06Speaker 1: it just fractionally off vertical. But it's also like, you know,
- 45:09Speaker 1: this woman in front of me, it is like you look around.
- 45:11Speaker 1: You are the only one reclining your seat on a
- 45:14Speaker 1: Sydney to Brisbane flight. My other thing is, feel free
- 45:19Speaker 1: not to put your phone on speaker phone when you're
- 45:21Speaker 1: having a phone call in public. Feel free to use
- 45:24Speaker 1: use the old school or put some headphones on because
- 45:28Speaker 1: we're not interested in that noteting.
- 45:29Speaker 2: That's excellent life of life tips anyway.
- 45:32Speaker 1: So anything netball happening for you this week?
- 45:34Speaker 3: List?
- 45:34Speaker 1: Do we have any netball games left with your we're out.
- 45:37Speaker 2: We want our semi final on Saturday.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Oh congratulations, h so GF now no is Saturday coming?
- 45:43Speaker 2: Yep, so I want to see on Sunday. I can't
- 45:45Speaker 2: believe it a good tough game.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Why did it take us so long to talk about this?
- 45:49Speaker 2: Ah, you know, just because I forgot no.
- 45:51Speaker 1: So that was a good tough game.
- 45:52Speaker 2: That's good, good tough game. And so yeah, training tomorrow night,
- 45:56Speaker 2: last training and then the grand final on Saturday, which
- 45:58Speaker 2: is a beauty exciting.
- 46:00Speaker 3: And what about this team you're playing?
- 46:02Speaker 2: They well, they're a bloody good team. They haven't beaten
- 46:05Speaker 2: us this year, but they did beat us last year
- 46:08Speaker 2: in the semi finals, so they made it through to
- 46:09Speaker 2: the grand finals. So but like half the Rep team
- 46:13Speaker 2: is in my team and the other half is in
- 46:14Speaker 2: the other team, so it'd be really great. Yeah, it's
- 46:18Speaker 2: really good. So they're a ripping team, but so are we,
- 46:21Speaker 2: so it'd be exciting.
- 46:22Speaker 1: So go, it's a good game.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Good luck is an after party planned?
- 46:27Speaker 2: Yes at the pub?
- 46:29Speaker 1: Oh nice, very good.
- 46:30Speaker 3: I can't go wrong with it.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Oh, well, good.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Luck Evelyn and co. Let's just hope for a very
- 46:35Speaker 1: good game. I have no netball, but apparently we're looking
- 46:37Speaker 1: at summer netball soon. But I love summer netball because
- 46:40Speaker 1: we get a squad of about twelve or thirteen. So
- 46:42Speaker 1: if you want a week off, take a week off,
- 46:44Speaker 1: no problem, no training, no training, just hit some giggles.
- 46:48Speaker 1: So but you don't forget Liz. If you need a shoot,
- 46:50Speaker 1: Bub's available. This groa tam good to know if you
- 46:53Speaker 1: want to import her. But yeah, have a great week everybody.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I'm Carol and Swindell.
- 46:58Speaker 3: I'm Cathcox two, I'm Mozelle Spye.
- 47:01Speaker 2: Bye mm hmm
