- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Tuesday the 17th of
- 0:17October. We are well and truly on our way

- 0:25momentum taking us toward the end of the year.
- 0:28You have pressed pause and you are going to sit with me, walk
- 0:33with me, do sit ups with me. Not that I'm doing setups right
- 0:37now or whatever you're doing that you have invited me to be
- 0:40part of your day so that you and I can read God's word together.
- 0:44God's world changing, universe shaping, all revealing word.
- 0:50What an excellent plan that you and I get to do this together.
- 0:55I hope that this is encouraging you as much as it does me.
- 0:58And well, I'm encouraged that you are here.
- 1:02Thank you so much. Particularly, a number of you
- 1:04have sent me very kind messages of encouragement in the past
- 1:07week about the change that's happening for me in my new role
- 1:11in defense. And I just want to say thank you
- 1:13so much for being so kind and encouraging.
- 1:16Here I am. Here you are and we get to keep
- 1:18on going together. Friends, so good on you and
- 1:21thank you. I'm sure your lives are all
- 1:24equally full and busy with many changes and adventures and
- 1:29opportunities to respond to the word of God and His prompting
- 1:33for you in your life. So I just want to encourage you
- 1:37with every step of faith you take in your day, starting here,
- 1:42taking a bit of time out in God's Word.
- 1:45So having said all that, let us dive into today's Bible reading
- 1:51as we hear all about Paul heading back as promised to the
- 1:55mission field in Ephesus where things are going to get a little
- 1:58bit hairy. So join me friends, as we read
- 2:02together Acts Chapter 19. While Apollos was in Corinth,
- 2:16Paul travelled through the interior regions until he
- 2:19reached Ephesus on the coast, where he found several
- 2:22believers. Did you receive the Holy Spirit
- 2:25when you believed? He asked them?
- 2:27No, they replied. We haven't even heard that there
- 2:31is a Holy Spirit. Then what baptism did you
- 2:34experience? He asked and they replied the
- 2:37baptism of John. Paul said John's baptism called
- 2:42for repentance from sin, but John himself told the people to
- 2:46believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.
- 2:49As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the
- 2:54Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on
- 2:57them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke in other
- 3:01tongues and prophesied. There were about 12 men in all.
- 3:07Then Paul went to the synagogue and preached boldly for the next
- 3:10three months, arguing persuasively about the Kingdom
- 3:14of God. But some became stubborn,
- 3:17rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the
- 3:20way. So Paul left the synagogue and
- 3:23took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions
- 3:27at the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for the next two
- 3:31years, so that people throughout the province of Asia, both Jews
- 3:35and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.
- 3:38God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles.
- 3:43When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin
- 3:46were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases
- 3:50and evil spirits were expelled. A group of Jews was travelling
- 3:55from town to town casting out evil spirits.
- 3:58They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their
- 4:01incantation, saying, I command you in the name of Jesus, whom
- 4:05Paul preaches to come out. Seven sons of Siva, a leading
- 4:10priest, were doing this. But one time when they tried it,
- 4:13the evil spirit replied, I know Jesus and I know Paul, but who
- 4:19are you? Then the man with the evil
- 4:21spirit leapt on them, overpowering them, and attacked
- 4:25them with such violence that they fled from the house naked
- 4:28and battered. The story of what happened
- 4:31spread quickly all through Ephesus to Jews and Greeks
- 4:34alike. A solemn fear descended on the
- 4:37city, and the name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honoured.
- 4:41Many who became believers confessed their sinful
- 4:43practices. A number of them who had been
- 4:46practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burnt them
- 4:50in a public bonfire. The value of the books was
- 4:54several $1,000,000, so the message about the Lord spread
- 4:58widely and had a powerful effect.
- 5:01Afterward, Paul felt compelled by the Spirit to go over to
- 5:05Macedonia and Achaia before going to Jerusalem, and after
- 5:09that he said I must go on to Rome.
- 5:13He sent his two assistants, Timothy and Arastus ahead to
- 5:16Macedonia, while he stayed a while longer in the province of
- 5:20Asia. About that time serious trouble
- 5:24developed an Ephesus concerning the way.
- 5:27It began with Demetrius, A silversmith who had a large
- 5:30business manufacturing silver shrines of the Greek goddess
- 5:33Artemis. He kept many Craftsman busy.
- 5:37He called them together along with other employed in similar
- 5:40trades and addressed them as follows.
- 5:43Gentlemen, you know that our wealth comes from this business.
- 5:47But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many
- 5:52people that handsome gods aren't really gods at all.
- 5:56And he's done this not only here in Ephesus, but throughout the
- 6:00entire province. Of course, I'm not just talking
- 6:04about the loss of public respect for our business.
- 6:07I'm also concerned that the temple of the great goddess
- 6:10Artemis will lose its influence and that Artemis, this
- 6:14magnificent goddess worshipped throughout the province of Asia
- 6:18and all around the world, will be robbed of her great prestige.
- 6:23At this their anger boiled and they began shouting Great is
- 6:28Artemis of the Ephesians. Soon the whole city was filled
- 6:32with confusion, everyone rushing to the Amphitheatre, dragging
- 6:36along Gaius and Aristarchus, who are Paul's travelling companions
- 6:41from Macedonia. Paul wanted to go in too, but
- 6:44the believers wouldn't let him. Some of the officials of the
- 6:47province, friends of Paul, also sent a message to him, begging
- 6:51him not to risk his life by entering the Amphitheatre.
- 6:55Inside, the people were all shouting some one thing and some
- 6:59another. Everything was in confusion.
- 7:02In fact, most of them didn't even know why they were there.
- 7:05The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward and told him
- 7:09to explain the situation. He motioned for silence and
- 7:13tried to speak, but when the crowd realized he was a Jew,
- 7:17they started shouting again and kept it up for about two hours.
- 7:21Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.
- 7:24Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.
- 7:27At last the Mayo was able to quiet them down enough to speak.
- 7:32Citizens of Ephesus, he said. Everyone knows that Ephesus is
- 7:37the official guardian of the temple of the great Artemis,
- 7:41whose image fell down to us from heaven.
- 7:45Since this is an undeniable fact, you should stay calm and
- 7:49not do anything rash. You have brought these men here,
- 7:53but they have stolen nothing from the temple and have not
- 7:56spoken against our goddess. If Demetrius and the Craftsman
- 8:01have a case against them, the courts are in session and the
- 8:05officials can hear the case at once.
- 8:08Let them make formal charges and if there are complaints about
- 8:12other matters, they can be settled in a legal assembly.
- 8:16I am afraid we are in danger of being charged with rioting by
- 8:20the Roman government, since there is no cause for all this
- 8:24commotion, and if Rome demands an explanation, we won't know
- 8:29what to say. Then he dismissed them and they
- 8:33dispersed. Jesus, following you can often
- 8:46put us at odds with the momentum of the society in which we live.
- 8:54The world promotes self-interest above interest for the
- 8:58vulnerable. Our world promotes success over
- 9:04service. Our world emphasizes the here
- 9:08and now. When you want our hearts set in
- 9:11eternity, Jesus, may your Spirit dwell in US and bubble up in us
- 9:20to create a lens which shapes our sight and our hearts to be
- 9:26focused on you and your Kingdom in the midst of the shouting and
- 9:31competing priorities of the world around us.
- 9:34Just as we saw happening all these years ago in Ephesus, we
- 9:41just pray that your spirit gives us wisdom and faithfulness and
- 9:48kindness and gentleness and all the other fruits that we need to
- 9:53live this Christian life well. And I thank you.
- 9:58I thank you that you call us to a place where we are forgiven
- 10:02and loved, and that our identity is set firmly in who you see us
- 10:09as your loved children. We just pray all these things in
- 10:15your name, Jesus. Amen.
