- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's
- 0:02Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show. Just wrapping up that Butler game for
- 0:05Speaker 1: a moment, Coach Caravan on an ankle. It was not
- 0:08Speaker 1: one hundred percent and he told us in a postgame
- 0:10Speaker 1: it hurt. Nineteen point seven rebound, six assists, three blocks,
- 0:15Speaker 1: by the way part of winning that game. I mean,
- 0:18Speaker 1: that guy, I can't run. I don't run out of
- 0:23Speaker 1: superlatives with him. I just can't. I got to come
- 0:25Speaker 1: up with new stuff every game.
- 0:27Speaker 2: The way he attacked the game. And listen his ankle.
- 0:30Speaker 3: You know, there's a lot of players that a lot
- 0:33Speaker 3: of basketball players.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Would not have played on his ankle.
- 0:36Speaker 3: You know, they would have been thinking longer term about themselves.
- 0:42Speaker 2: But that's Caraban.
- 0:44Speaker 3: And you know, as a man and as a competitor
- 0:47Speaker 3: and as a Yukon man. So yeah, I mean, I
- 0:51Speaker 3: just want him to attack every game he plays like that.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You know, like I said, where he took seventeen shots,
- 0:58Speaker 3: you know where he was all over both backs, you
- 1:00Speaker 3: know where he was being an assertive player. You know,
- 1:04Speaker 3: I don't want to ever go back to like the
- 1:06Speaker 3: three shot attempts at halftime box.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Score that I look at with him, it's like, you know, you.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Came back here to obviously to pursue more championships, but
- 1:15Speaker 3: also to learn how to be a leading man. And
- 1:19Speaker 3: you know, part of learning how to be a leading
- 1:21Speaker 3: man is just a willingness on a nightly basis to
- 1:24Speaker 3: attack the game and to take the shots and to
- 1:28Speaker 3: drive the ball, and to attack the game in a
- 1:31Speaker 3: manner where you're just super assertive and super aggressive and
- 1:35Speaker 3: if it doesn't work out in the end, we'll live
- 1:38Speaker 3: with the results. You've got to be able to accept
- 1:39Speaker 3: the criticism that comes with that, the responsibility that comes
- 1:43Speaker 3: with that. I know how that feels. And that's the
- 1:46Speaker 3: responsibility that the best player feels when you know, and
- 1:50Speaker 3: you've got to be willing to attack it that way,
- 1:53Speaker 3: and that's the responsibility that you know that only the
- 1:56Speaker 3: face of the team and the head coach feel the
- 1:59Speaker 3: weight and that in the program.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Ale's caravan. And this I don't know if you
- 2:04Speaker 1: if this is a fair question or not, but a
- 2:06Speaker 1: guy who's is unselfish and his team oriented, is someone
- 2:10Speaker 1: like him when you say you got to be our
- 2:12Speaker 1: leading man, does he have to cross over a little
- 2:15Speaker 1: boundary and almost be a little selfish in some sense
- 2:18Speaker 1: to do what you want him to do well.
- 2:21Speaker 3: In particular with with with Liam out at this particular time,
- 2:25Speaker 3: he has to be I think he's forced to do
- 2:28Speaker 3: a lot more with Liam Ount, I think unfortunately for Hassan,
- 2:32Speaker 3: you know, he's having to do more creating and have
- 2:36Speaker 3: the ball in his hands more, just because we don't
- 2:39Speaker 3: have a lot of players that you know, are natural
- 2:42Speaker 3: creative with the dribble so or can generate shots and
- 2:46Speaker 3: two on ball situations to create opportunities for the centers
- 2:50Speaker 3: and the shooters. So you know, I think, you know what,
- 2:53Speaker 3: when Liam is back and healthy, it's going to allow
- 2:56Speaker 3: him to maybe be a little bit less aggressive. But
- 2:59Speaker 3: even when Liam is he should be asserting himself on
- 3:03Speaker 3: these games. You know, he's one of the best players
- 3:05Speaker 3: in the Big East. He's a first teamer in the
- 3:08Speaker 3: Big East, and he should attack these games like he's
- 3:11Speaker 3: a he's a player of the year type of guy.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You mentioned the Bigs Samson. Johnson had a couple of
- 3:17Speaker 1: good games in a row. He was plus twelve in
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Butler game, fourteen points for him, five rebounds, four blocks.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Let's talk about him first, because Samson has been around. Obviously,
- 3:26Speaker 1: he's a winner. He's had got a couple of rings.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He's been a program guy and an important player for
- 3:32Speaker 1: the Huskies in the last several seasons. What are you
- 3:34Speaker 1: seeing from him here in these last couple It seems
- 3:37Speaker 1: to me like he looks like he's extended himself to
- 3:40Speaker 1: a little bit of another level because he's really developed
- 3:44Speaker 1: and really contributed big time in these last few.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Sam is a warrior, you know, and
- 3:50Speaker 3: it's like he just he gives you, It just gives
- 3:53Speaker 3: you absolutely everything he's got. This team doesn't isn't filled
- 3:58Speaker 3: with those types of you know, competitive warrior types. You know,
- 4:03Speaker 3: where hard Camp Spencer played, how hard Andre Jackson.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Played for you.
- 4:09Speaker 3: You know, these guys were like action heroes and and
- 4:12Speaker 3: you know and and and even you know, like you know,
- 4:15Speaker 3: Donovan and Adama. I mean, these guys were just warrior
- 4:19Speaker 3: types and you know, in their own way, and and uh,
- 4:23Speaker 3: you know, like that's what Samson brings. And that's why
- 4:26Speaker 3: we just, you know, we've we've got to start to
- 4:28Speaker 3: start games with him in the lineup because you need
- 4:32Speaker 3: people like that, especially to start a game playing with
- 4:35Speaker 3: that level of just urgency and effort and and his
- 4:39Speaker 3: you know, his offensive. You know, listen, we we're the
- 4:43Speaker 3: foul discrepancy, you know, on a nightly basis. I think
- 4:46Speaker 3: part of it is you know, bad fortune, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: and part of it is, you know, we've got to
- 4:52Speaker 3: do more to continue to throw the ball to both centers.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You know, we've got to develop, continue to develop tarifs
- 4:58Speaker 3: as a guy, we could throw it in the post too.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And then we got to get the ball to Samson more,
- 5:03Speaker 3: you know in space as a roller non lob dunk
- 5:06Speaker 3: where you know he could He's got you know, one
- 5:09Speaker 3: dribble attack the rim. You know, we just we got
- 5:11Speaker 3: to get fouled more. We got to find more ways
- 5:14Speaker 3: to generate you know, paint points and rim shots and uh,
- 5:19Speaker 3: you know, but Sampson people, you know, like you just
- 5:22Speaker 3: have no idea, you know how critically important his spirit
- 5:26Speaker 3: is to our program right now.
- 5:28Speaker 2: He's a back to back champion.
- 5:30Speaker 1: He's got two rings like Caravan and Diara. Terris Reid
- 5:34Speaker 1: had been a quiet couple of games. I know you
- 5:36Speaker 1: got into him and practice. You were telling me twenty
- 5:39Speaker 1: three minutes against Butler, I want to hear more about
- 5:41Speaker 1: that fourteen points in the game, and Red made some
- 5:45Speaker 1: big plays for you, and maybe the biggest one in
- 5:47Speaker 1: overtime off that loose ball and I thought was going
- 5:49Speaker 1: to end up being a turnover ends up in his hands.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He gets a layup out of it, and that was
- 5:54Speaker 1: kind of the bucket that put you over the top
- 5:57Speaker 1: in that one.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what Tyris is like. At times, Taris
- 6:02Speaker 3: has been a completely different player, but we haven't been
- 6:05Speaker 3: able to unlock it all the way on an every
- 6:08Speaker 3: single possession basis. Playing with the force and the tenacity
- 6:13Speaker 3: and the identity. He doesn't make that type of violent
- 6:17Speaker 3: physical first contact and play with a nastiness nasty Adama.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Was as a player. Adamo is nasty. I mean he
- 6:27Speaker 2: would just destroy you. He was a he was vicious,
- 6:32Speaker 2: he was ruthless.
- 6:33Speaker 3: And you know that that's something that you know that
- 6:36Speaker 3: holds Taris back right now from being as good as
- 6:39Speaker 3: he can be. You know, I hope to be the
- 6:42Speaker 3: coach that can unlock it. I hope that it's not
- 6:44Speaker 3: another coach that unlocks it. But you know what, we're
- 6:47Speaker 3: trying to get him there because you know, when he
- 6:50Speaker 3: shows up, you know, at his absolute max of what
- 6:54Speaker 3: he's capable of he's a he's a difference maker. He's
- 6:56Speaker 3: a great starting center for somebody, and at a dominant center.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but what that'd be nice to unlock all of
- 7:04Speaker 1: his gifts, that's for sure. Dan Hurley with us back
- 7:07Speaker 1: in a moment on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show
