- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show Jima with
- 0:03Speaker 1: us on Mike Chrispino. We're back with you on Saturday,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and it's a three point thirty kickoff at the Rent
- 0:09Speaker 1: as the Huskies wrap.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Up the first half of their schedule.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We'll have a bye week following this game with Florida
- 0:15Speaker 1: International and we'll get to the Panthers in just a moment.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Want to talk a little defense coach here.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We're going to have ty King on with us a
- 0:23Speaker 1: little bit later in the program, and he had seven tackles.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He's been a real, you know, impact guy on your
- 0:30Speaker 1: defensive units. And we talked to him about getting used
- 0:34Speaker 1: to playing next to people who he never played with.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I mean, the chemistry thing in football is really important.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I think you would agree and tell me about that
- 0:46Speaker 1: because now he's playing next to people that he never
- 0:49Speaker 1: played next to, and he's had you know, the spring
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the summer camp and now we've had some games here.
- 0:54Speaker 1: How do you look at that unit because Omar Diamande
- 0:57Speaker 1: is doing a nice job. I mean that unit is
- 0:59Speaker 1: starting to come together.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with you, and we need to see
- 1:03Speaker 3: even better results than we're seeing.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But so much a plan.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Good defense is that cohesiveness and the trust and the
- 1:09Speaker 3: guys that are in front of you, behind you and
- 1:11Speaker 3: beside you. And you're starting to see that, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 3: you see it growing practice and you see it transformed
- 1:15Speaker 3: to the game. I think that we've got a really
- 1:19Speaker 3: good linebacker crew, you know, with Brian, param and Umar
- 1:23Speaker 3: and Taekwan. And I'm going to throw a mirror Renwick
- 1:25Speaker 3: in there, because I think he's a darning good player.
- 1:27Speaker 3: He hasn't gotten a lot of snaps yet, but you know,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and we'll rotate those guys through. Brian didn't play as
- 1:33Speaker 3: much as past week. He was dinged up just a
- 1:36Speaker 3: little bit. He's fine, But having four guys that you
- 1:40Speaker 3: really feel that you can count on is a nice thing.
- 1:43Speaker 3: And then you know, the accumulation of reps that they've
- 1:46Speaker 3: been able to take together through spraying, like you said,
- 1:48Speaker 3: through summer and now through games are just it's starting
- 1:53Speaker 3: to show up in the consistency of their play.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Ty King will tell us a story in a
- 1:58Speaker 1: few moments, but I'm going to tell you the story
- 2:01Speaker 1: about his recruiting and coming here and meeting you and
- 2:04Speaker 1: bringing his mother. And I was impressed by this because
- 2:09Speaker 1: he said that you didn't tell him what he wanted
- 2:12Speaker 1: to hear, and like the other guys did who he
- 2:14Speaker 1: had gone to talk to.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So I wonder, when you meet with.
- 2:19Speaker 1: A player and you haven't really met him and you're
- 2:21Speaker 1: talking about maybe they come to Yukon to play.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Football, how do you approach it?
- 2:25Speaker 1: I mean, you just, you know, shoot from the hip
- 2:28Speaker 1: a little bit and find out what a guy's about.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And I was impressed. But the reason he said he
- 2:34Speaker 1: came here is that you didn't tell him what.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Everyone else was trying to tell him.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And I'm saying to myself, wait a minute, what the
- 2:41Speaker 1: heck went on there?
- 2:42Speaker 3: Well, I don't lie. I'm not gonna lie to him
- 2:44Speaker 3: or mislead him. I think, you know, in order to
- 2:48Speaker 3: get your their best and in order to have a
- 2:51Speaker 3: happy mom, I have to understand the reality of the situation.
- 2:56Speaker 3: You know, you're gonna have to come in here and
- 2:57Speaker 3: you're gonna have to compete. Everything's earned nothing. And when
- 3:02Speaker 3: you say that to a guy and he embraces it
- 3:04Speaker 3: the way taekwon, did you know you got the right
- 3:07Speaker 3: kind of guy? You know, you know you got a
- 3:09Speaker 3: guy that loves to compete that's a fighter. That's that's
- 3:12Speaker 3: all about ball. And I felt with this kid like
- 3:17Speaker 3: an instant connection. I did. I don't know how you felt,
- 3:21Speaker 3: but I was like, yeah, this is my kind of guy.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And I still feel it, and I feel it even stronger,
- 3:27Speaker 3: like very quickly, I've come to really really respect and
- 3:31Speaker 3: appreciate and like this this young man. And uh, I'm
- 3:35Speaker 3: so glad he's on our team. But I think it
- 3:37Speaker 3: all has to start with honesty. We yeah, I mean,
- 3:39Speaker 3: you don't shoot from the hip, but yeah, you have
- 3:41Speaker 3: a plan, but that's based upon what you know. But
- 3:44Speaker 3: when you sit down with a family and questions start
- 3:46Speaker 3: getting asked, and I'm not gonna lie, you know, I
- 3:49Speaker 3: tell the parents I don't want a call from an
- 3:52Speaker 3: unhappy mom or an unhappy dad or an unhappy aunt
- 3:55Speaker 3: her uncle because I've told them something. We'll promise them
- 3:59Speaker 3: something and then it's not happening. So it's all about,
- 4:03Speaker 3: you know, being honest. And if, like I said, in
- 4:07Speaker 3: the case of this guy, when you told him it
- 4:09Speaker 3: wasn't going to be easy, it's like he was like, great,
- 4:12Speaker 3: that's how I want it. You go, okay, yeah, I
- 4:14Speaker 3: want this kind of guy on my team.
- 4:16Speaker 2: For sure.
- 4:17Speaker 1: The other thing about him which was impressive in what
- 4:19Speaker 1: he was saying is that he came into the meeting
- 4:22Speaker 1: with you and with his mom, and he's really trusted
- 4:25Speaker 1: his mother's opinion on what the interchange would be. And
- 4:29Speaker 1: I thought that was smart, right, you come in with
- 4:32Speaker 1: somebody who you trust, his mom, and they talk to you,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and they talk about football, and they talk about Yukon,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and then he went with her opinion and what she
- 4:42Speaker 1: thought of you and the whole circumstance, And I just
- 4:46Speaker 1: I just think that is a really good way to
- 4:48Speaker 1: do business.
- 4:49Speaker 2: If you can do it that way.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Well, you're a parent. I'm a parent, and I think
- 4:53Speaker 3: that you know, I always try to approach every meeting
- 4:55Speaker 3: I have with those people as if I were sitting
- 4:59Speaker 3: in their shoes.
- 5:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I have kids that were D one athletes. You know,
- 5:04Speaker 3: I was on recruiting visits. You know, my son was
- 5:08Speaker 3: an All American lacrosse player played at Maryland. I went
- 5:11Speaker 3: to some of the best high school or college lacross
- 5:14Speaker 3: program in the country and sat with their coaches yea,
- 5:17Speaker 3: and I asked the questions that were important to me
- 5:20Speaker 3: as a parent, And of course it dawned on me.
- 5:22Speaker 3: If these are the things that I'm looking for for
- 5:25Speaker 3: my son, then I need to make sure I'm providing
- 5:28Speaker 3: them for somebody else's son.
- 5:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:30Speaker 3: The number one thing is honesty and transparency and making
- 5:33Speaker 3: sure that they know that their kids are going to
- 5:35Speaker 3: be in good hands and taken care of and their
- 5:37Speaker 3: well being is going to be number one priority. So
- 5:39Speaker 3: that's just what you know, that's just my philosophy. I
- 5:41Speaker 3: don't know what anyone else's philosophy. For me, it's always,
- 5:44Speaker 3: you know, how would I want my son or my
- 5:48Speaker 3: daughter Because my daughter in law played, my stepdaughter played,
- 5:51Speaker 3: you know, two time national champion at USC and beach volleyball,
- 5:55Speaker 3: So I got some athletes in the family, and it's like, Okay,
- 5:58Speaker 3: how do I want my kid treated? That's how I'm
- 6:02Speaker 3: going to treat your kid.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good philosophy, no doubt. I coached Jim Morrow,
- 6:09Speaker 1: whether it's the Yukon Football Coaches Show continues in just
