- 0:00Speaker 1: So mate says.
- 0:01Speaker 2: A club house celebrates its fifth birthday with a special
- 0:04Speaker 2: party on October sixth, featured live music, games, prizes, food,
- 0:07Speaker 2: had more.
- 0:08Speaker 1: As you say, mate, So firstly, happy birthday.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Make five years old is long, but in the scheme
- 0:12Speaker 2: of things, it's a damn long time.
- 0:15Speaker 3: It feels like I've aged twenty years and five.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Yeah, we've probably been open seven but the first two
- 0:23Speaker 4: years were like bring your own eski and just a
- 0:27Speaker 4: bit of a shit show but fun. But yeah, legitimately
- 0:30Speaker 4: five years and hoping to celebrate with everyone, have a
- 0:33Speaker 4: good time and throw some of our favorite bands on
- 0:35Speaker 4: the stage for the day.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Oh before I actually get into the music made, I
- 0:39Speaker 2: see you've also got a hot tub there?
- 0:41Speaker 3: How's that going to work? We try and roll out
- 0:45Speaker 3: the hot tub every year.
- 0:46Speaker 4: It's one of those memes where it's like what my
- 0:50Speaker 4: friends think I'm doing and what I'm actually doing is
- 0:52Speaker 4: probably ends up as four overweight guys in the hot
- 0:55Speaker 4: tub with beer bottles at the bottom.
- 0:58Speaker 3: N But yeah, it's just something extra up.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Bring your dogs, bring your towel, and a lot of
- 1:03Speaker 4: the bands jump in after their set and just a
- 1:05Speaker 4: good time. Mate, Try and encourage as much of a
- 1:07Speaker 4: good time at MOS as we can.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Oh sure, now you said there is eight bands playing, Mate,
- 1:13Speaker 2: including Cakes, there's Couch with It, Hammers and Ringer, but
- 1:17Speaker 2: briefly made like, tell us a little bit about each
- 1:19Speaker 2: band on the line up and why you want them
- 1:22Speaker 2: to be partying birthday celebrations.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I think, yeah, there's a bit of a scene.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Like we cater to all genres at MOS, everything from
- 1:31Speaker 4: you know, blues to heavy to comedy, but there's probably
- 1:34Speaker 4: a certain vibe that a lot of the punters dig
- 1:37Speaker 4: and that's i'd say the new sort.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Of the new post punk stone and rock psych rock
- 1:45Speaker 3: kind of feels.
- 1:46Speaker 4: So we try to put together a lineup of of
- 1:48Speaker 4: young bands that sort of cater to the majority of
- 1:51Speaker 4: our crew that froth and come regularly. So all the
- 1:55Speaker 4: bands on the bill I rate one hundred percent some
- 1:57Speaker 4: of the best bands on the Goal Coast in Australia
- 2:00Speaker 4: for mine. All great energetic live shows and yeah, big
- 2:05Speaker 4: riffs and groovy. So yeah, I've just tried to put
- 2:08Speaker 4: together something.
- 2:08Speaker 3: That that will be a fun day. Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Now, I know people always say this, Mate, but this
- 2:14Speaker 2: is one show that will sell out because there's going
- 2:16Speaker 2: to be so many people want to be a part
- 2:17Speaker 2: of it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So where can people find out more information and get tickets?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Now, yeah, there's still some most as a clubhouse.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Dot com has the ticket link and yeah, we've got
- 2:29Speaker 4: tickets left for the Sunday, October sixth event. It's a
- 2:32Speaker 4: public holiday on the Monday, so it's a bit of
- 2:35Speaker 4: a no brainer if you want to come and party
- 2:37Speaker 4: on that day. There might be tickets left on the door.
- 2:40Speaker 4: But I wouldn't resk it.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I wouldn't risk it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And you also said at the top we all mentioned
- 2:45Speaker 2: about excuse me about winning the Gold Coast Live Venue
- 2:49Speaker 2: or Live Music Venue of the Year org. But as
- 2:52Speaker 2: well as reading that, you also took out the gone
- 2:54Speaker 2: for Hall of Fame.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Mate, you're inducted into that.
- 2:57Speaker 2: So that's a pretty big honor, mate, What does it
- 3:00Speaker 2: actually mean to you and me?
- 3:02Speaker 4: To bos Ah, it's huge, Like, yeah, the chance of
- 3:05Speaker 4: me getting in the Hall of Fame for anything else
- 3:07Speaker 4: in my life an next to none. So what they
- 3:10Speaker 4: do is if you win three of a category, you
- 3:13Speaker 4: get put into the Hall of Fame.
- 3:15Speaker 3: So far it's Amy Shark and us.
- 3:17Speaker 4: So it took our venue in the year three times
- 3:21Speaker 4: in five years, and we get.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Moved to that sort of status, and for us, yeah,
- 3:25Speaker 3: it's just.
- 3:27Speaker 4: When you're so busy and caught with your blinkers on it,
- 3:30Speaker 4: it's really rare to take a step back and just
- 3:32Speaker 4: appreciate the journey that you've been on.
- 3:34Speaker 3: So something like that is just a bit of a
- 3:36Speaker 3: tip of the hat to us.
- 3:37Speaker 4: And yeah, we value that award and the Hall of
- 3:40Speaker 4: Fame status personally one hundred percent. It means that we're
- 3:44Speaker 4: on the right track and we're doing something right and
- 3:46Speaker 4: it gives us a bit of steam to keep going
- 3:49Speaker 4: in sort of uncertain times.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah, the Music Venue of the Year award, it's great.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It looks good on the shelf, it's a great thing
- 3:57Speaker 2: to talk about, but what actually goes into making your
- 4:01Speaker 2: venue I suppose good enough to even be nominated for that.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, there's I've been a part of the judging panels
- 4:08Speaker 4: as well. It's probably about twenty people on the judging
- 4:11Speaker 4: panel from all walks of music industry life, and they
- 4:15Speaker 4: look at things like variety of offering in terms of
- 4:19Speaker 4: genre and events. They look at accessibility, just the friendliness
- 4:24Speaker 4: and the overall vibe of a place and how a
- 4:26Speaker 4: venue is attracting sort of larger shows, like for us,
- 4:31Speaker 4: we're starting to get a lot of big shows at
- 4:32Speaker 4: two fifty cap, which we.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Weren't a few years ago. You know.
- 4:36Speaker 4: So they look at trajectory and just everyone votes and
- 4:40Speaker 4: they say their piece, and yeah, we were lucky to
- 4:42Speaker 4: take it out. I think for me, just being a
- 4:45Speaker 4: muso first, if I wanted to cater to musicians first
- 4:49Speaker 4: at the venue, like we've got a lot of things
- 4:51Speaker 4: set up sound wise and comfort.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Wise, green room wise, that helped that first.
- 4:56Speaker 4: And it's just flowed on to being a fun and
- 4:59Speaker 4: safe play where people can come and express themselves. And yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 4: there's no fear of any drama or anything like that.
- 5:06Speaker 4: So yeah, we tried to create a cool space. Right now,
- 5:09Speaker 4: I want to take you back to the beginning.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Makers.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I've always wondered this fore, I've never actually asked you, like,
- 5:14Speaker 2: why did you call it Mo's Desert Clubhouse in the
- 5:16Speaker 2: first place.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Yeah, we all met at a festival and American called
- 5:21Speaker 4: Burning Man, which was in Reno in Nevada, and we
- 5:26Speaker 4: made a stop in the Mahave Desert along the way,
- 5:29Speaker 4: which was a really cool place to hang out for
- 5:32Speaker 4: a few days, and we came back to Australia wanting
- 5:36Speaker 4: to do something creative. I've sort of had all the
- 5:39Speaker 4: hats of the industry on, but having my own venue
- 5:41Speaker 4: was the ultimate goal.
- 5:43Speaker 3: So yeah, we.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Thought Mahave Desert Clubhouse or Mo's Desert Clubhouse was a
- 5:48Speaker 4: good name. And there's a big mural on the sidewall
- 5:51Speaker 4: that sort of shows a journey of Mo's and yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 4: we really didn't know what we were when we started.
- 5:56Speaker 4: We wanted a space to store our cars and maybe
- 6:00Speaker 4: have some office space and we lived upstairs for a while.
- 6:02Speaker 4: But over time it's just sort of, yeah, evolved into
- 6:07Speaker 4: a real live music venue for Australia. So yeah, pretty stoked.
- 6:10Speaker 4: But yeah, it started with some extremely munted chats at
- 6:14Speaker 4: Burning Man.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So over the years, I suppose, how was your initial
- 6:20Speaker 2: vision for mose club House.
- 6:22Speaker 1: How does it progressed over the years to where you
- 6:24Speaker 1: are now?
- 6:26Speaker 3: I think it's just a sense of professionalism. Yeah, we
- 6:29Speaker 3: were sort of taking it.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Week by week, year by year at the start, not
- 6:34Speaker 4: really knowing what the end journey would look like, and
- 6:37Speaker 4: we're getting to a point where it is pretty finalized.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Like there's always.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Improvements you can do on a venue, but the vision
- 6:43Speaker 4: has been actualized, and I think just yeah, realizing that
- 6:48Speaker 4: there is interest here and we are attracting bands of note,
- 6:51Speaker 4: and just really focusing in on that, trying to cater
- 6:54Speaker 4: to a wide range of people coming in. And then
- 6:57Speaker 4: you know, in COVID times we scored grants for things
- 6:59Speaker 4: like a podcast room and jam room and a second
- 7:03Speaker 4: bar and back deck and food truck, just trying to
- 7:05Speaker 4: add things to make it a self sufficient venue and
- 7:09Speaker 4: with alternate income streams.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Just a post to the alcohol as well. Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Now, over those five years, mate, there's been a lot
- 7:17Speaker 2: of hell of a lot of highlights for you, I'm sure,
- 7:19Speaker 2: But what's a couple of your band highlights?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Your personal ones.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Probably the biggest pinch me moment was having sunk Loodo
- 7:28Speaker 4: in house up for.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Their fifteen year reunion show.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I was a massive fan back in the day, lost
- 7:34Speaker 4: my shoes in the moshpit to some boiler room thing
- 7:37Speaker 4: that lived or a big day out. And being able
- 7:39Speaker 4: to have a band that was so special back in
- 7:42Speaker 4: the day to play our venue and play our stage
- 7:45Speaker 4: was a real highlight moment.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Seeing grown men cry in the moshpit with beards and
- 7:51Speaker 3: beer bellies.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I wasn't one of them.
- 7:56Speaker 4: But yeah, probably Yeah, the best moments of probably the
- 7:59Speaker 4: bands that you never think you're going to get, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 4: like a COG or a Sunklado or some of the
- 8:03Speaker 4: overseas tour. Is there the real moments of holy shit,
- 8:07Speaker 4: like we've done something here and we're attracting people that
- 8:10Speaker 4: were like my heroes back in the day.
- 8:12Speaker 3: So those are probably the specialist moments I think.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they sort of touch on this just before made.
- 8:17Speaker 2: But COVID was obviously a bad period for everyone in
- 8:20Speaker 2: the industry. Like you guys got a few grands to
- 8:22Speaker 2: stuff to help out. You're also branched out each other
- 8:25Speaker 2: other avenues for a revenue stream, I guess. But since then,
- 8:29Speaker 2: like it still hasn't fully got back to what it
- 8:31Speaker 2: should be, has it.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Like it it's still the international acts are.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Coming over, but the local businesses are still struggling to do
- 8:37Speaker 2: to some extent, are they?
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I feel like there was a golden period
- 8:41Speaker 4: post COVID where where the brakes were put on international
- 8:44Speaker 4: bands and you know, local bands and upcoming bands were
- 8:48Speaker 4: able to put up their ticket price and sales were
- 8:51Speaker 4: through the roof for local, low level mid level shows
- 8:53Speaker 4: in that period, but as time and the economy rolls on,
- 8:57Speaker 4: it seems that times are tight again for everyone finding
- 9:00Speaker 4: that at the venue, like ticket sales are under what
- 9:03Speaker 4: we would think and what the bands I think they'll
- 9:05Speaker 4: do based on that golden sort of period post COVID,
- 9:09Speaker 4: and people are coming out and maybe only having two
- 9:11Speaker 4: to four drinks whereas you know a few years ago
- 9:13Speaker 4: they would have come out and had ten. So and
- 9:17Speaker 4: then you have to look at the youth coming up,
- 9:19Speaker 4: like alcohol isn't as big a a focus for them
- 9:21Speaker 4: as what it was for our generation.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So there's a few factors there to consider.
- 9:25Speaker 4: I don't have the right answer, but at least we're attracting,
- 9:29Speaker 4: you know, larger bands over time and just have to
- 9:32Speaker 4: keep going man and hopefully write out the period with everyone. Yeah.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I think, like there's so many things and people have
- 9:38Speaker 2: got so many different theories on what can happen. But
- 9:40Speaker 2: I think a big one for me anyway, is that
- 9:43Speaker 2: people have stopped pre buying tickets to constance, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 2: like but what they don't understand is that like the
- 9:49Speaker 2: bands and the venues, they all go off the pre
- 9:51Speaker 2: sales though, like people have mentioned it constantly getting canceled
- 9:54Speaker 2: at the last minute, stuff like that. But it's because
- 9:57Speaker 2: you look at the pre sales, there's ten or twenty
- 9:58Speaker 2: pre stales, and bands aren't prepared take that risk, and
- 10:01Speaker 2: venues are prepared to take that risk. I think collectively
- 10:04Speaker 2: the music lovers out there should start pre purchasing tickets again,
- 10:07Speaker 2: and that'll be one step in the right direction, would it.
- 10:10Speaker 3: It's one hundred per center step in the right direction.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I guess.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I feel for the individuals who have had a lot
- 10:15Speaker 4: of events canceled so that that trend of pre buying tickets,
- 10:19Speaker 4: which was so prevalent when the venue capacities were reduced,
- 10:22Speaker 4: is sort of dried up a little bit. People are
- 10:24Speaker 4: scared to buy tickets and lose their money. But in
- 10:28Speaker 4: this day and age, like as a venue and as
- 10:30Speaker 4: bands involved, we're looking at that presale number pre show
- 10:33Speaker 4: to determine staffing, to determine if a gig is viable.
- 10:37Speaker 4: And quite often you'll have, you know, something sitting on
- 10:41Speaker 4: forty to fifty pre sale, and then you'll get one
- 10:43Speaker 4: hundred and fifty through the door and there's just no
- 10:44Speaker 4: way to prepare for that, or no a show is
- 10:47Speaker 4: even worth doing so, it's definitely a way that that
- 10:50Speaker 4: people can help if they're up for it, to pre
- 10:52Speaker 4: buy tickets and then everyone knows it's going to be
- 10:54Speaker 4: a good show, or know that it won't be viable,
- 10:56Speaker 4: but just have to see if yeah, trends change, so
- 11:00Speaker 4: they do.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Now, one of your little side projects were involved in
- 11:04Speaker 2: made his little thing called Beats touch Els, So tell
- 11:07Speaker 2: us me more about that.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Yeah, made back to the old website Moss at clubhouse
- 11:14Speaker 4: dot com. There's a what's on there? We've got yeah,
- 11:18Speaker 4: stack of different genre stuff coming out. We've got a
- 11:21Speaker 4: sort of wrapper called Forte and Gooch Palms, Saltree, Dallas,
- 11:27Speaker 4: Frasca Frente, We've got Bob Evans, Andrew Faris remaining, saus King, Parrot,
- 11:33Speaker 4: John Too Good, tanks of.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Shit coming up. Man. So there's something for everyone pretty
- 11:37Speaker 3: much there, Very good.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Now before I let you go, man, I've got a
- 11:41Speaker 2: new segment that I've started where i'd stroll through people's
- 11:43Speaker 2: Facebook pages and find a few photos.
- 11:46Speaker 1: An issue with it? Please explain. I've got yours.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yours aren't too bad, actually make compared to some of
- 11:50Speaker 2: the ones I got, But I just want to check
- 11:53Speaker 2: this one up because not a lot of people actually
- 11:55Speaker 2: know that you are a musician yourself.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Yeah, that was I had a Transveil Diamond Syndicate gig
- 12:02Speaker 4: that that's been my main blues rock band for twelve
- 12:06Speaker 4: to fifteen years. Yeah, I haven't been able to write
- 12:09Speaker 4: a blues song in a while, which must have been
- 12:10Speaker 4: life's gone too good. But other than that, I play
- 12:12Speaker 4: in a band called Rinser and the Black arm Martyr,
- 12:15Speaker 4: And yeah, part of part of life is trying to
- 12:18Speaker 4: stay stay on the guitar and keep that rolling as well.
- 12:22Speaker 4: It's a challenge when you've got so much on. But
- 12:24Speaker 4: that's my true my true love, I guess man, playing
- 12:27Speaker 4: guitar and playing music.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And here's your other true love, buddy. This photo is
- 12:31Speaker 2: absolutely fucking gold.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yeah, getting my boy to work earlys at that age.
- 12:39Speaker 3: So now that's that list my boy.
- 12:42Speaker 4: That was taken Yeah, probably four five years ago now,
- 12:45Speaker 4: But happy days. Man. We're trying to bring the kids
- 12:48Speaker 4: in and give them exposure to to gigs and the
- 12:51Speaker 4: back end of gigs, and who knows, I don't know
- 12:54Speaker 4: if I'd want them to be in the music industry.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I have doesn't have they could deal with this dress.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Yea, hope and get some enjoyment out of it anyway. Cool.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Now we got another one that looks like it's going
- 13:05Speaker 2: to be my personal favorite, mate.
- 13:07Speaker 1: What the hell is going on there?
- 13:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that's our residence shot Ski. It's called at Mo's
- 13:14Speaker 4: twenty bucks for four shots. You have to all work
- 13:16Speaker 4: as a team or you get a fible down your top.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Yeah about a few, mate, I'll try and limit the
- 13:23Speaker 4: shots these days, but a bit of fun, all.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Right, Christ Well, thanks very much for your time, mate.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Most fifth birthday bash is on October the sixth. It's
- 13:30Speaker 2: a Sunday public Hoday on the Monday. He's still tickets
- 13:33Speaker 2: left plenty. Else happened in there, mate, He goes a
- 13:35Speaker 2: champion music venue. You support music really well, so I'm
- 13:39Speaker 2: parf of everyone. Thank you and well done on the awards.
