- 0:20l A R. S O N Home Services dot com. Tellph number six
- 0:23O eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five three five four
- 0:28three four three. Andrew, how are you doing today? Uh? You
- 0:32know what, My favorite part of this whole show is the lead in music.
- 0:38Yes, I sometimes I used to back the old back in the old
- 0:43days, Andrew, I used to get to pick the songs. Now autumn
- 0:45does en. I'm always I'm always excited just as you are. Is great.
- 0:49Yeah, it's great. I like that. I was dancing in my
- 0:52chair little Well. It's great to talk with you this morning. And we
- 0:58are in obviously a transitional season right now, going from summer to winter also
- 1:02known as fall, and a lot of stuff to be aware of this time
- 1:06of year. And we're going to talk about roofs and the Larson roof experience.
- 1:10And one of the cool things about about what you guys are doing at
- 1:12Larsen Home Services is we've talked in the past about being GAF Master Elite.
- 1:18We've talked about that certification, we talked about the warranty, we talked about
- 1:21the great work that your team does. One of the things too that's very
- 1:23cool is sometimes, especially this time of year, as we're looking towards winter,
- 1:27it's not always a full roof replacement that's needs. Sometimes it's simply a
- 1:33repair here or repair there, something that can prevent some serious damage over these
- 1:37coming months. It is, you know, roof frustration right now, especially
- 1:41this time of year, is is super important if people, for people are
- 1:45worried or concerned that they that they might be having a leak or I mean
- 1:49winter. Winter is a time when a lot of that stuff will will rear
- 1:53its ugly head. But you know, I really wanted to start off with
- 1:56a little story. Month or two ago, one of my reps was running
- 2:00an estimate and had a really good rapport with the people and he thought everything
- 2:07went really really well, and you know, he said, for sure,
- 2:09like they're they're going to go with us. I was all right, great,
- 2:13Well, you called him back a few days later and they had decided
- 2:15to go with somebody else, and so he asked him, you know,
- 2:17well, what made you decide to go with somebody else. And the guy's
- 2:21like, I'm not even gonna lie. It was one hundred percent the price.
- 2:24And he said, well, do you mind telling me what the price
- 2:27was and you know, and I'll just put it out on the show.
- 2:29I mean, this was a it was. It was a really nice rambler,
- 2:32probably a three bedroom, two bathroom with a detached garage. And we
- 2:37were like just under fifteen thousand dollars for this roof, but we were putting
- 2:42on you know, top of the line. It was actually some armor shield
- 2:45jingles and you know, the best of the best. And this other company
- 2:50was going to do the roof for under ten thousand dollars. And when my
- 2:53rep told me that, I said, that's not even possible. I now,
- 2:58I don't even see how they can possibly do that and actually have gas
- 3:01to put in their truck. Still, well, I said, just call
- 3:06them back and ask them what what the heck they're putting on that roof for
- 3:10that price. And he called the guy back and the guy kind of didn't
- 3:15say anything for a second, and he said, you know, I'm actually
- 3:17kind of embarrassed to tell you this, but I actually have no idea.
- 3:22So they were the cheapest price, and they told him that nobody would be
- 3:25able to beat their price, which is true, nobody could beat that price.
- 3:30But this homeowner had no idea what they were actually putting on his roof,
- 3:37what brand of shingle, what style of that brand, what they were
- 3:39doing for underlayments, anything, and that in this day and age with the
- 3:44internet where you can literally research everything to go with somebody because they're the cheapest,
- 3:52but yet you don't know what they're doing. When we come out and
- 3:54give you a roof estimate, not only are you going to know exactly what
- 3:58we're putting on your roof and the color and the style, to the type
- 4:01of underlayment, we're actually going to have pieces of everything we put on that
- 4:05roof so you can see it, you can feel it, you can touch
- 4:09it, you know what's going up there. Then when we do the roof,
- 4:13we're actually going to take photos of the entire process, so you get
- 4:17to see every one of these parts and pieces going on. So what we
- 4:21say we're going to do, you know, we actually do it. Well.
- 4:25Needless to say, this homeowner had actually followed back up with my rep
- 4:30when the roof got done, and it was an absolute disaster. They tried
- 4:32to reuse underlayments, They tried to reuse at edge metals like your drip edge
- 4:40and your gutter apron. And that's how they get away with doing a roof
- 4:44that cheap is they try to reuse stuff. So anyway, just a quick
- 4:48story like whether it's us or it's somebody else. I mean, that would
- 4:53be like saying, Okay, well I'm buying a four door car and they
- 4:56have a four door car and it's half the price, but what kind of
- 4:59car is one of the options? And what is a warranty? So it
- 5:02does matter, But to the untrained eye, it just looks like a shingle.
- 5:06And I always say that you can put the best shingle in the world
- 5:10on, but if you don't do the little things right, the flashings,
- 5:13the edge metals, underlayment, its ice of water, it really doesn't matter
- 5:15because at the end of the day, that beautiful, great shingle will probably
- 5:18leak. You know what I think about, Andrew is is for parents who
- 5:20maybe your grandparents. Maybe you got a playhouse sell back, maybe you had
- 5:25your roof free done and there were some leftover shingles, and you think,
- 5:28ah, I'm gonna put some we'll put some kind of make the playhouse look
- 5:30nice. We'll just throw some shingles up there. And inevitably, as every
- 5:33parent a grandparent knows, it may look nice, but you go inside said
- 5:38playhouse and you suddenly realize those aren't water tight. Whatso it? It looks
- 5:44it looks like you got a roof out of pot. I mean, when
- 5:46and when it comes down to getting bargain bin shingles like you should put them
- 5:48on the playhouse where they should go on the playhouse, on the doghouse,
- 5:54something like that on your home. Und blowing to me, absolutely mind blowing.
- 6:00Now not mind blown when I found out how the actual process went,
- 6:03because I know how much roofing materials cost. And honestly, since COVID,
- 6:11like the prices of these things, the prices of petroleum based products, like
- 6:16they've gone up, been up, been up. I mean, I would
- 6:20say since twenty twenty, they've we've probably had twenty price increases on materials.
- 6:26Now that has slowed down and that has started to normalize. But and when
- 6:30I say normalized, like it's flattened out. But they're never going to go
- 6:34down. I can tell you I've been roofing for a long time and the
- 6:38prices have never went down. So yeah, you know, one of the
- 6:42things that that impressed me is is, you know, you guys a couple
- 6:46of few years ago now redid our roof and one of the things that was
- 6:48impressive to me was, as you mentioned, getting a detailed invoice of what,
- 6:53you know, what the products are, what's all being put in.
- 6:56But the other thing too, that like, it's some of these little things
- 6:58that that you don't notice, and you're probably as a homeowner, not supposed
- 7:00to notice right away. But I've since noticed things like the flashing around our
- 7:04chimney. We've got to I live in a brick house and we've got a
- 7:08nice upfront a brick chimney on the front of our house. There's there's a
- 7:12metal flashing that that your crews put on there, and it's color matched.
- 7:15It's not just a nice flashing, it literally matches the brick. And that's
- 7:19why I'm saying this has been a couple of years where I hadn't really noticed
- 7:24that little detail, and I think by design, I hadn't really noticed that
- 7:28detail. But you're like, wow, those guys really did some really did
- 7:31some great work, not just quality work, but as far as visually,
- 7:35they took the time to make sure that every part of that that roof was
- 7:39done right right, And I'm sure we used a red or a brown flashing
- 7:43out a suit. Yep, yeah, we match. We always match as
- 7:46good as we can. But I'm glad that you brought that up because our
- 7:49number one roof restore issue that we fix is chimney flashing. Because chimney flashing,
- 8:00excuse me, is a detail that we take very seriously because chimneys are
- 8:03a major league point. It is typically the biggest hole penetration that goes through
- 8:09your roof, so on the back of your chimney, if it's more in
- 8:15our standards, if it is more than three feet away from the peak of
- 8:18your roof. So in other words, if it is three feet down your
- 8:22roof from the peak, it needs what's called a cricket on the back of
- 8:24it. And a cricket is basically another small roof that we build off the
- 8:28back of the chimney, so when the water comes down from the top of
- 8:31the roof, it doesn't just hit the big flat back part of your chimney.
- 8:35Well, a lot of chimneys do not have this. So if you
- 8:39can imagine over time, all this water coming and hitting the back of the
- 8:41chimney and snow piling up, not only snow, but leaves and debris,
- 8:46and if nobody's up there inspecting the roof, what it leaves and debris turned
- 8:48into. They turn into dirt, and they sit there and eventually it leaks
- 8:52and then someone's like, oh, I need a new roof, and they
- 8:54get a new roof put on, and hopefully they're not like this homeowner that
- 8:58we just met a few a couple months ago, and they don't know what
- 9:01they're getting on their roof, because what happens is untrained technicians come up and
- 9:07do their roof, and what they get is they get new flashing put around
- 9:09their chimney. But it's not actually cut into the chimney. It has to
- 9:13actually be physically cut into the chimney. It has to have a proper bend
- 9:18on it, and then it has to be sealed. So for off chance
- 9:22at water was to run down the chimney and go into said cut, because
- 9:28it is bent the proper way, it forces the water back out. But
- 9:31what happens most of the time is someone just wraps a flashing around the chimney
- 9:35so it looks good and then they just use cock or blackjack to just gob
- 9:41it up and seal it up, which doesn't last very long. So that
- 9:46is a that's a very very key component to a roof, and we charge
- 9:50quite a bit extra for a brick chimney because it takes There are only certain
- 9:58people on the roofing crew that can touch that chimney and they've been roofing for
- 10:03a very very very long time, and we want to make sure that they're
- 10:05taking the proper time and care to flash that chimney right. So big time
- 10:11roof restore issues are leaking around chimneys not having crickets, and that's one of
- 10:18the things where we come in and look at your shingles and go, well,
- 10:20you know what your shingles are actually a they're really great, they're in
- 10:22great shape, but nobody put a cricket on your chimney and nobody flashed it
- 10:26properly. But we can pull some shingles off, we can restep flash,
- 10:31then we can reput the chimney flashing on, build a cricket and get your
- 10:35roof to where it needs to be so that those shingles are going to be
- 10:37good for you for a lot of years, and we take a lot of
- 10:39pride in them. It's pretty amazing the work that you guys do, and
- 10:41it's a great opportunity. Today is a great day to have the folks from
- 10:45lur Storme Surfaces come out get you a roof inspection. It's not going to
- 10:48cost you anything. The best thing is going to come out, take a
- 10:50look and say everything's great. You've got a fantastic roof. The worst thing
- 10:54that can happen is you ignore that warning, go through winter and discover,
- 10:58oh my goodness, water and other things has been pen trading my roof.
- 11:00It's important day again. It's not going to cost you anything to start that
- 11:03conversation. Haven't come out do that inspection six oh eight five three five four
