Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's talk right now about the million Dollar Fish and
- 0:03Speaker 1: what we can expect for this season, because we know
- 0:05Speaker 1: that it is returning to the Northern Territory for its
- 0:07Speaker 1: eighth season, with the search for Australia's Most Wanted fish starting.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I believe it's tomorrow morning.
- 0:14Speaker 1: But joining me on the line to tell us a
- 0:16Speaker 1: little bit more is the head of Events for NT
- 0:18Speaker 1: Major Events, korin Hardey.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Good morning, Koran, morning, Katie.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Here are you going.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm very well, even better after you and the barrel
- 0:27Speaker 1: Monday turned up here at the studio earlier this morning
- 0:30Speaker 1: and the barro was looking fantastic.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I don't worry about the pittrol price. May get out
- 0:36Speaker 3: there and catch them finish exactly.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Now, tell me a little bit more about what we
- 0:42Speaker 1: can expect this year.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, this season. It's the eighth season, isn't it.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Yeah, eighth season and it's shaping up to be the
- 0:50Speaker 3: biggest yet. Our registrations are up over sixteen percent over
- 0:53Speaker 3: fourteen thousand rios already, which is absolutely phenomenal to so
- 0:58Speaker 3: early on the season, so very much expect to be
- 1:00Speaker 3: way up over the forty thousand marks by the end
- 1:02Speaker 3: of the year. But more importantly, there's one hundred and
- 1:05Speaker 3: ten thousand dollar fish out there, and there's nine one
- 1:08Speaker 3: million dollar fish potentially still swimming around. So not only
- 1:11Speaker 3: have we got the one fish, the one million dollar
- 1:13Speaker 3: fish that goes in this year, but there's obviously the
- 1:15Speaker 3: previous ones that are still floating around as well. So
- 1:18Speaker 3: they get out there, drop a line and anyone can
- 1:20Speaker 3: do it. You know, you don't have to be a
- 1:21Speaker 3: superstar fisherman or any of that. As long as there's
- 1:25Speaker 3: a line in the water, you've got a chance to
- 1:27Speaker 3: grab a big one.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, anyone can have a go.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So nine chances this year, so from all the previous
- 1:33Speaker 1: eight seasons and obviously this season.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So surely it's going to go off one of these years.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Koran, it has to do. I've got no doubt about it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I cert want to be around for it, There's no
- 1:44Speaker 3: doubt about that. Yeah, bit of a shouldn't dig following.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I imagine it'd be great fun.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It'd be so wonderful for tourism as well, particularly, you
- 1:51Speaker 1: know when you talk about that adventure sort of tourism
- 1:53Speaker 1: and bringing people to the Northern Territory to have a
- 1:56Speaker 1: crack at fishing.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Absolutely season I suppose seven last year was our biggest shit.
- 2:02Speaker 3: You know, when you've you've got an economic stimulus of
- 2:05Speaker 3: over forty five million, you know, and of that is
- 2:08Speaker 3: effectively sixteen million a new money. It's it's massive, you know.
- 2:11Speaker 3: The attendance. The attendance is the inter state visitation. There's
- 2:15Speaker 3: so much to do, so much to think about, and
- 2:18Speaker 3: just the unique experiences. We've got the best waterways going.
- 2:22Speaker 3: It's Australia's Richard's fishing comp For us that live here,
- 2:25Speaker 3: we're pretty lucky really well get a chance every day.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Hey talk us through the different areas where obviously the
- 2:31Speaker 1: fish are released. Because I know when we were talking
- 2:34Speaker 1: on the week that was this morning, Joe Hersey, who's
- 2:36Speaker 1: the member for Catherine, was wondering, she's you know, she's
- 2:38Speaker 1: keen to get out fishing near Katherine.
- 2:40Speaker 2: What areas are included?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, all the regions. So if you look at the
- 2:45Speaker 3: I suppose the five main reward five fishing regions, so Darwin,
- 2:48Speaker 3: Tewee Islands, kakadu arnhum Land and Catherine. I can assure
- 2:52Speaker 3: you now that there's been empty fisheries. I'm a fantastic
- 2:55Speaker 3: partner and that support us that have been out over
- 2:58Speaker 3: the last month or so, tag and fish throughout all
- 3:01Speaker 3: of those waterways from those regions.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Now, what about the charity the charity partner? Is there
- 3:07Speaker 1: still a charity partner for this year?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, there's three so Starlight Children's Foundation, Counter Council and
- 3:14Speaker 3: Shoreline Aur trusted partners. So funding again folks like, if
- 3:18Speaker 3: you're out there and you catch you catch a fish,
- 3:20Speaker 3: you get the opportunity to donate one thousand dollars to
- 3:22Speaker 3: one of those official charities. So all going, well, we're
- 3:25Speaker 3: throwing a few checks, you know, our fantastic charity partner's
- 3:29Speaker 3: way and they get to benefit the community in the
- 3:31Speaker 3: long term.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Now, Karen, what do people need to do if they
- 3:35Speaker 1: want to register and if they want to take part
- 3:37Speaker 1: this year or this season.

- 4:08Speaker 3: great fun.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So fourteen thousand people have already registered. What's the highest
- 4:13Speaker 1: number we've ever had in a season.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's just under forty thousand, So that's what we're saying before.
- 4:20Speaker 3: It's all roads towards, are leading towards at the moment.
- 4:23Speaker 3: An absolute fun for season eight. So we're really excited
- 4:27Speaker 3: and it's one of our great it's one of ours,
- 4:28Speaker 3: I suppose our favorites that we have favorites, but it's
- 4:31Speaker 3: one of our better ones that we enjoy working on,
- 4:33Speaker 3: that works through the shoulder season, that keeps us all
- 4:35Speaker 3: busy over Christmas, and like I said, when everyone's getting
- 4:38Speaker 3: a bodyed to get the moment get away, drop a
- 4:40Speaker 3: line in and real in the big one.
