- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shaun here. It's Monday.
- 0:14It is the 4th of May. You know what that means?
- 0:18It is May, the fourth International Star Wars Day, and
- 0:22it's great to have your company. Whether you are into R2D2 and
- 0:26his friends or not, this is a day that a lot of people around
- 0:29the world will be celebrating that incredible franchise of
- 0:32good versus evil, the space opera that changed it all.
- 0:37But there is a much bigger opera, a much bigger story that
- 0:41changes it all, which is the one that we are going to continue
- 0:44reading this week. And you, if you have been with
- 0:48me for a little while, we have been reading through the book of
- 0:50Joshua, which started out with this fascinating narrative of
- 0:54God's people passing over the Jordan River into the promised
- 0:58land and has now become this incredible document which
- 1:02outlines the inheritance that God's people have taken as
- 1:07they've gone into that land. And as a contrast from last
- 1:10week, today is a very short reading, only 1011, no, just 10
- 1:15verses as we hear about 1 1/2 tribes and the land that they
- 1:20will inherit. So let us hear this story of
- 1:23God's faithfulness to his people as we read together the details
- 1:28of this gift that he gives them. And as we hear these, we can
- 1:32reflect on the gift that God gives us in Jesus.
- 1:36As we read together Joshua chapter 16,
- 1:49the allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended
- 1:52from the Jordan River near Jericho, east of the springs of
- 1:55Jericho, through the wilderness, and into the Hill Country of
- 1:58Bethel. From Bethel, that is, Luz, it
- 2:02ran over to Atteroth in the territory of the Archites.
- 2:06Then it descended westward into the territory of the Japhlotites
- 2:10as far as Lower Beth Horon, then to Giza and over to the
- 2:15Mediterranean Sea. It was the homeland allocated to
- 2:19the families of Joseph's sons Manasa and Ephraim.
- 2:23The following territory was given to the clans of the tribe
- 2:26of Ephraim. The boundary of their homeland
- 2:29began at Ateroth Ada in the east.
- 2:33From there it ran to Upper Beth Horon, then on to the
- 2:36Mediterranean Sea From Mikmath and the north to the boundary
- 2:41curved eastward past Tanoth Shiloh to the east of Genoa.
- 2:46From Genoa it turned southward to Attaroth and Nara, touched
- 2:51Jericho, and ended at the Jordan River.
- 2:55From Tapua the boundary extended westward, following the Cana
- 2:58Ravine to the Mediterranean Sea. This is the homeland allocated
- 3:03to the clans of the tribe of Ephraim.
- 3:07In addition, some towns with their surrounding villages in
- 3:10the territory allocated to the half tribe of Manasseh were set
- 3:13aside for the tribe of Ephraim. They did not drive the
- 3:17Canaanites out of Giza, however, so the people of Giza live as
- 3:21slaves among the people of Ephraim to this day.
- 3:36But thank you that you are a steadfast and reliable entity in
- 3:41our lives and that with so many parts of our life, we have to
- 3:46wonder about motivations and we have to wonder about
- 3:49trustworthiness and we have to wonder about dependability.
- 3:52But not so with you. Whatever you say, you do,
- 3:57whatever you promise, you fulfil it.
- 4:01And so we can just lean in. And as we read your word and we
- 4:05read your promises to us, we know that these declarations
- 4:10will be upheld. And we know that you are
- 4:14faithful and good. And we thank you for your
- 4:18faithfulness and goodness in our lives.
- 4:20And the way that that has played out again and again, and the way
- 4:25that that ultimately plays out through the gift of Jesus who
- 4:29changes everything and brings us home into you and your embrace
- 4:34eternally. So we thank you, our wonderful
- 4:37Father, our loving provider, and our beautiful Saviour.
- 4:42We pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
