- 0:00Speaker 1: Rolling on with development camp and joining us now this
- 0:02Speaker 1: year's second round pick and Crack and prospecting the forward
- 0:05Speaker 1: Casey Utrend as well.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Welcome to Seattle.
- 0:08Speaker 1: First off, formerly, but what's your take away from your
- 0:10Speaker 1: first day on the ice and all that you've taken
- 0:12Speaker 1: away from around you?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been awesome. It's been a great, great few days.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Like you said, it's we were talking before and you know,
- 0:19Speaker 3: it's a it's a quick process, but uh, you know,
- 0:21Speaker 3: I'm really glad to be here and all the guys
- 0:23Speaker 3: and all the staff have been super welcoming and it's
- 0:25Speaker 3: been so really fun so far.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It's a few days enough to allow yourself to let
- 0:30Speaker 1: all of this sink in. As far as what it
- 0:32Speaker 1: meant to be drafted by an NHL team, not really,
- 0:35Speaker 1: to be.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Honest with you, I think it's gonna take a little bit,
- 0:37Speaker 3: a little bit more time. But uh yeah, well, uh
- 0:40Speaker 3: we'll see. I don't know, uh you know, when a
- 0:42Speaker 3: little hit, but I'm sure.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Will at some point.
- 0:44Speaker 1: What was a phone like when you went back and
- 0:46Speaker 1: check that thing once a smoke all clear?
- 0:47Speaker 2: From day two? Yeah, it was a lot of texture
- 0:50Speaker 2: and friends and families. It was really cool. And that's uh, honously,
- 0:53Speaker 2: that's the most.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Special part of you see all the people that you
- 0:55Speaker 3: know support you and you know have helped me along
- 0:58Speaker 3: the way, and you know it's just just a a
- 1:00Speaker 3: stepping in the.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Process and you know, just kind of me getting a
- 1:04Speaker 2: new journey here. But yeah, it's great to get that
- 1:06Speaker 2: support from there.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Whether it's the environment, whether it's your surroundings, whether it's
- 1:09Speaker 1: the building or anything else.
- 1:10Speaker 2: What are your first impressions of this place? Yeah, obviously
- 1:12Speaker 2: the facilities speak for themselves. They are awesome.
- 1:14Speaker 3: We're obviously here at in a practice facility, but we
- 1:17Speaker 3: want to say a Climate Pledgey yesterday and it was unreal,
- 1:20Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Place is awesome and you know, just a city itself,
- 1:23Speaker 2: like it's it's awesome. It's a you know, a really
- 1:25Speaker 2: cool spot.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So what was the one spot either here or over
- 1:28Speaker 1: at Climate Pledge Arena that made you stop and think,
- 1:32Speaker 1: whoa this is now NHL territory.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, just stepping in here.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I mean you see all the facilities and you know,
- 1:38Speaker 3: being an NHL practice facility, it's it's pretty sweet.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So I think, yeah, just being in here and yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 2: it's awesome.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I read something where your father said as far as
- 1:47Speaker 1: what you built up with your own mental side of things,
- 1:52Speaker 1: your dad once said, you hate losing. What's the most
- 1:55Speaker 1: important thing you learned about your emotions and how you
- 1:58Speaker 1: can use those to your advantage as a player.
- 2:00Speaker 2: From your dad, Yeah, I think just.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Growing up, he always uh you know, I grew up,
- 2:04Speaker 3: you know, with with two brothers and in a neighborhood
- 2:07Speaker 3: with a lot of kids in my Asian we'd always
- 2:08Speaker 3: hang out and he playing sports, and no matter what
- 2:10Speaker 3: it was, I think, you know, we're always competitive, and
- 2:13Speaker 3: I know I just just hated to lose. I remember, like, uh,
- 2:16Speaker 3: you know, being a young young kid and playing your
- 2:18Speaker 3: baseball in the backyard and like losing a game and
- 2:21Speaker 3: you know, in the grand scheme of things, it means nothing,
- 2:23Speaker 3: but like that's that's the biggest game in the world
- 2:26Speaker 3: right there, and you know you're upset, you're crying after
- 2:27Speaker 3: you're losing, which is look at back on it now,
- 2:29Speaker 3: it sounds silly, but I think that's where you kind
- 2:32Speaker 3: of learn, know the competitiveness and hating to lose, and
- 2:35Speaker 3: you know, to a certain Greece, well, I don't really
- 2:37Speaker 3: think you can teach it and I think some some
- 2:39Speaker 3: people are just you know, competitors and some people just
- 2:41Speaker 3: don't really have that.
- 2:42Speaker 2: But you know, I think i'd consider myself a competitor.
- 2:44Speaker 2: So got a favorite MLB team? I'm a Red Sox
- 2:47Speaker 2: guy sports fan. Yeah, if you.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Could choose one Red Sox player to trade places with
- 2:52Speaker 1: for one day, who would have been pastor present?
- 2:53Speaker 2: I gotta say Big Poppy right, Yes, a legend. Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 2: that would be pretty sweet to be him for a day.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Casey Mutrin joining us right now.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And we talked to about your daddy also had a
- 3:01Speaker 1: massive football background, Yes, the football side of things. Were
- 3:04Speaker 1: you a big fan also growing up? You can a
- 3:06Speaker 1: chance to watch his highlights at all?
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yeah? We uh, we'd always love you know, on the
- 3:10Speaker 3: on Sundays You're sitting down with my family and be
- 3:12Speaker 3: watching football all day.
- 3:13Speaker 2: That was kind of kind of the best.
- 3:15Speaker 3: And you know, obviously my dad being a football player,
- 3:17Speaker 3: I think that was you know, super fun for us.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I think, you know, some of my earliest memories when
- 3:23Speaker 3: I think of Seattle, I think of.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Obviously the Malcolm Butler interception.
- 3:26Speaker 3: That's kind of my earliest memory of of of watching
- 3:30Speaker 3: you know, the Patriots and obviously that was a really
- 3:32Speaker 3: cool moment. But uh yeah, it's kind of funny now
- 3:35Speaker 3: that being in Seattle, and obviously this year didn't go
- 3:37Speaker 3: our way.
- 3:37Speaker 2: But so I had handled a few months ago. Then
- 3:39Speaker 2: that wasn't great. That's top. We'll let you guys have that. Yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 2: malcolmbal one was tough. I can't. I don't know how
- 3:46Speaker 2: you guys get over that one.
- 3:48Speaker 1: If you can go back and think of the ideal
- 3:50Speaker 1: sunday to watch football, you more of a guy that
- 3:52Speaker 1: would love to be in the seats fifty yard line
- 3:54Speaker 1: or just sitting back over at home with your favorite
- 3:56Speaker 1: snacks and just taking this all in.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, uh, really, Ben, I've never been to
- 4:00Speaker 3: an NFL game, so I think I've only really experienced
- 4:02Speaker 3: to sitting at home and watching at home.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I think it's nice, you.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Know, throwing red zone on getting all the games and
- 4:06Speaker 3: just kind of relaxing on a Sunday.
- 4:08Speaker 1: It's yeah, what defines going back here to the ice
- 4:12Speaker 1: a successful season for you this next year?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think for me, you know, playing in college next
- 4:17Speaker 3: year and just want to be a key contributor and
- 4:19Speaker 3: have a good year there, and you know, just kind
- 4:22Speaker 3: of the effective there and learn a lot and develop
- 4:24Speaker 3: a lot as a player, and uh, I have some
- 4:27Speaker 3: have some other goals that are you know, I kind
- 4:29Speaker 3: of keep driving and keep to myself. But you know,
- 4:30Speaker 3: for me, I just want to you know, have a
- 4:33Speaker 3: really good year next year. And marn Long, so.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You mentioned Brady could Chuck matthew Ns as guys that
- 4:38Speaker 1: you loved watching growing up before we're getting to this level.
- 4:43Speaker 1: What parts of their game mean the most to you
- 4:45Speaker 1: as far as the kind of player that you want
- 4:46Speaker 1: to be.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I think for for me, like when you look
- 4:48Speaker 3: at them, they're they're obviously bigger guys you know, who
- 4:51Speaker 3: play really hard and play uh, you know, a really
- 4:54Speaker 3: really physical style hockey. But at the same time, look
- 4:56Speaker 3: at those guys and there's a ton of skill and
- 4:57Speaker 3: they can make a lot of plays. And I think
- 4:58Speaker 3: for me, just bringing that blend of you know, power
- 5:00Speaker 3: forward and competitiveness but also skill I think is something
- 5:03Speaker 3: that you know I have and you know I've worked
- 5:06Speaker 3: to continue to grow on and I think I will.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You know, get better as it goes. Now.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Part of the allure about this level guys tend to
- 5:13Speaker 1: learn more about themselves with how they have to train
- 5:15Speaker 1: and how they have to maybe.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Adjust what they eat and put into their body.
- 5:19Speaker 1: What was the biggest jump for you as far as
- 5:22Speaker 1: changing your habits you know from an earlier rage, whether
- 5:25Speaker 1: it might be what you do in the gym versus
- 5:26Speaker 1: what you you know, put into your mouth and digest
- 5:28Speaker 1: that to give bigger and get stronger as well.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you know, as you go, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: getting to the gym something that's really important, and being
- 5:35Speaker 3: a national team like that's something that's no big there.
- 5:38Speaker 2: It's you know, the office piece is a really big
- 5:39Speaker 2: part of it.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And you know I've developed a lot there basically, and
- 5:43Speaker 3: they've helped me, you know, translate that to on the ice.
- 5:45Speaker 3: So I think that's for me the biggest kind of
- 5:47Speaker 3: adjustment I made as my career is gone.
- 5:49Speaker 2: What's your ideal game day meal? Then?
- 5:52Speaker 1: I love good chicken parm Yeah, I love a good
- 5:54Speaker 1: chicken parts your favorite opt a cheat meal? What's it
- 5:56Speaker 1: gonna be? Kind of like a nice burner and fries
- 5:59Speaker 1: and a most Jacob.
- 6:00Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah, if you can go back and think of the
- 6:03Speaker 1: kind of player that you want to be in five years.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Of course, the NHL is in the picture here, but
- 6:07Speaker 1: what does Casey Utrium look like feel like as a
- 6:09Speaker 1: player at that point?
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I'm just someone who can you know,
- 6:12Speaker 3: affect the game in all areas. Like I said, I'm
- 6:15Speaker 3: a super competitive guy and competitive in all areas in
- 6:17Speaker 3: the ice and you know, for me, just being someone
- 6:20Speaker 3: who can make an impact on the game and in
- 6:21Speaker 3: multiple different ways. And then obviously you know, being someone
- 6:24Speaker 3: rounding out and developing my offensive game as well and
- 6:26Speaker 3: being someone who can contribute on to the line up.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So finally, I'll go back here to this toughest bus
- 6:30Speaker 1: ride that you've ever had coming.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Up coming up as a player? What was it? That's
- 6:33Speaker 2: a good question. We've had some tough ones.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I would say this year we went to Clarkson and
- 6:38Speaker 3: Saint Lawrence, which was probably like fourteen fifteen hours and
- 6:43Speaker 3: it was in the middle of a snowstorm, so it
- 6:44Speaker 3: was pretty sketchy, But that was that was the longest
- 6:46Speaker 3: one that was tough.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So what can you not live without? As far as
- 6:51Speaker 1: one thing that you need on a bus ride
- 6:53Speaker 3: I'd have to say, like by following our computer just
- 6:56Speaker 3: because I'd get way too or Casey, appreciate you, thank you,
- 6:59Speaker 3: thank you,
