- 0:00Do you want to be whole? We are essentially in the same
- 0:05position as Adam and Eve. We are told not to violate the
- 0:10commandments of God, but for whatever reason we do.
- 0:14We can either believe and be born again by water and the
- 0:17Spirit and enter the Kingdom of God, or not and remain us with
- 0:22the foolish virgins outside the door.
- 0:26Jesus Christ is the solution. The essential problem in life is
- 0:50separation from God our Father, resulting in chaos, darkness and
- 0:56death. Jesus Christ bridges that gap.
- 1:02He is the way offsetting chaos, the truth offsetting darkness,
- 1:07and the life offsetting death. Hello, my name is Larry
- 1:13Corbridge and welcome back to the Stand Forever series.
- 1:17This is episode 9. In the last several episodes, we
- 1:23considered what I just mentioned as the essential problem,
- 1:28problem in life. This and many of the coming
- 1:32episodes will focus now on the solution again, the essential
- 1:40problem. Problem in life is separation
- 1:43from God our Father. We are essentially in the same
- 1:48position as Adam and Eve. We are told not to violate the
- 1:53commandments of God, partake of the fruit of the tree of good
- 1:57and evil. But for whatever reason we do,
- 2:02we suffer the same consequence cut off from the tree of life as
- 2:06we gain the same benefit, the knowledge of good and evil, and
- 2:12we must discover the same and only solution.
- 2:17We can't partake of the fruit of the tree of life without going
- 2:21through Christ. Jesus Christ is the solution.
- 2:33He alone bridges the gap. He said I am the way, the truth
- 2:39and the life. No man cometh unto the Father
- 2:43but by me. Again, He is the way, offsetting
- 2:49chaos. He is the ideal to which every
- 2:53human heart and mind should aspire.
- 2:56He is the truth offsetting darkness.
- 2:59He reveals how to realize those aspirations.
- 3:04He is the life offsetting death. He provides the power to do it
- 3:11and the reward when you do. He is the why, the how and the
- 3:17what. He is Alpha and Omega, the
- 3:21beginning and the end and the course in between.
- 3:26He is the destination, the route and the outcome.
- 3:30Every good thing can be ours only because of him.
- 3:35As Aaron, the son of Mosiah said, since man had fallen, he
- 3:40could not merit anything of himself.
- 3:44But he continued, the sufferings and death of Christ atone for
- 3:49their sins through faith and repentance, and so forth, And
- 3:53that he breaketh the bands of death, that the grave shall have
- 3:58no victory, and that the sting of death should be swallowed up
- 4:02in the hopes of glory. Paul declared that in the
- 4:07dispensation of the fullness of times, our God and Father might
- 4:13gather together in one all things in Christ which are in
- 4:18heaven, and which are on earth, even in him.
- 4:23In a similar vein, King Benjamin proclaimed and and saying this,
- 4:28And moreover, there shall be no other name given, nor any other
- 4:34way, nor means, whereby salvation can come unto the
- 4:38children of men, only in and through the name of Christ the
- 4:44Lord Omnipotent. And then ether urged saying, And
- 4:49now I would commend you to seek this Jesus, of whom the prophets
- 4:55and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and
- 5:01also the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, which beareth
- 5:05record of them, may be and abide in you forever.
- 5:13As with all of Scripture, the Gospel of John points to Christ
- 5:19and engenders faith in him. But John especially reveals the
- 5:25Christ who is the Way, the truth, and the life.
- 5:30So consider this. Let's start with John chapter 3.
- 5:34Imagine this. It is dark in the night.
- 5:39A man quietly makes his way through the streets of
- 5:42Jerusalem. He is well dressed.
- 5:45He is a powerful Jewish official of high rank and esteem.
- 5:51He finds the house and it and is shown to the chamber or court,
- 5:55where at long last he stands before this unusual man.
- 6:02Never has he felt at such a loss.
- 6:04Never has he felt such a presence as he feels now he is
- 6:09invited to sit. He gathers his wits and says,
- 6:13respectfully, Rabbi, we know that thou art to teach you come
- 6:17from God, for no man can do these miracles that thou doest,
- 6:23except God be with him. And then Jesus replies saying,
- 6:30Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he
- 6:36cannot see the Kingdom of God. Puzzled, Nicodemus says, how can
- 6:42this be? Jesus says, Verily, verily, I
- 6:46say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,
- 6:51he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.
- 6:57John chapter 4. Jesus and his disciples travel
- 7:02nearly 100 miles from Jerusalem back to Galilee.
- 7:07They pass through Samaria, an area which Jews generally avoid
- 7:12because of their disdain for the Samaritans.
- 7:16They arrive in a city known as Saikhar or Sikhar.
- 7:22There is a famous whale there known as Jacob's Whale.
- 7:25It is midday. Jesus sits alone at the whale,
- 7:29resting from the journey. His disciples have gone into the
- 7:33city to buy food. A woman approaches.
- 7:36She is a Samaritan. She comes to the well to draw
- 7:40water. She looks at Jesus and sees that
- 7:44he is a Jew. She says nothing and as she
- 7:48draws water from the well, Jesus speaks.
- 7:53Give me to drink, He said. The woman is surprised that he,
- 7:58a Jew, would speak to her, a woman and a Samaritan, for any
- 8:03reason, much less ask drink from her.
- 8:06She says, How is it that thou being a Jew, asketh drink of me,
- 8:11which I am a woman of Samaria, for the Jews have no dealings
- 8:16with Samaritans? Jesus replies, If thou knewest
- 8:21the gift of God, and who it is that sayeth to thee, give me to
- 8:25drink. Thou wouldest have asked of him,
- 8:28and he would have given thee living water.
- 8:33She is puzzled. She says, That has nothing to
- 8:37draw with, and the whale is deep.
- 8:38From whence then hast thou living water?
- 8:43Jesus answers, Whoso drinketh of this water shall thirst again.
- 8:50But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him
- 8:54shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him
- 9:00shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting
- 9:06life. She then says, Sir, Give me this
- 9:10water that I thirst not, neither come hit her to draw.
- 9:16Jesus tells her to find her husband and return with him, and
- 9:19she says, I have no husband. He replies, Thou has well said,
- 9:25I have no husband, for thou has had five husbands, and he whom
- 9:30thou now hast is not thy husband, and that saidest thou
- 9:35truly? She, of course, is astounded and
- 9:41disturbed that Jesus knows the sorry and secret details of her
- 9:46adult life, and in one breath relates them to her.
- 9:51The disciples return and they're surprised to see Jesus speaking
- 9:56to a Samaritan woman, but no one says anything.
- 10:00She's unsettled by what has transpired, and she feels the
- 10:03disapproval of these other men. She leaves and returns to the
- 10:08city, where she tells others, Come see a man which told me all
- 10:14things that I ever did. Is not this the Christ?
- 10:20Think. Think about what is transpiring
- 10:23here. Think of what Jesus offers and
- 10:27to whom he extends the offer. She is a woman and women at this
- 10:34time have no social status. Samaritans are despised.
- 10:40She has been married five times and is living with yet another
- 10:45man who is not her husband. Jesus offers living water and
- 10:53the promise of eternal life to her, a woman, a Samaritan, a
- 10:59person with a sordid past, even now living in sin.
- 11:04In dramatic fashion, Jesus declares His offering of living
- 11:09water and eternal life is to all and for all who are willing to
- 11:15drink, including those of lowly stationed, those with a sordid
- 11:20past, and those currently living in sin.
- 11:26Those who partake of the water he offers will have in them a
- 11:31well of water springing up into everlasting life.
- 11:37Those who drink from any other source will thirst again.
- 11:42John chapter 5. We're making our way through the
- 11:47Gospel of John. Jesus returns from Galilee to
- 11:53Jerusalem, another 100 miles along dusty roads.
- 11:58An old man waits by the side of the pool.
- 12:01The air is filled with the noise of the bleeding of sheep from
- 12:04the nearby market, and with the clamor of hordes of people
- 12:09pushing and jostling, jostling their way through the nearby
- 12:13streets of Jerusalem. An old man hopes for the Jewish
- 12:18festival to pass quickly, because so many more people now
- 12:23crowd the edge of the pool, and his chances for reaching the
- 12:27pool in time are hopeless. Still he waits.
- 12:32Still he watches for the movement of the water.
- 12:36Still, he hopes in quiet desperation in the heat of the
- 12:41day. There is a a porch of stone
- 12:47around the edge of the Pool of Bethesda and the porches,
- 12:51divided into 5 parts. Each part has a set of columns
- 12:55that rise to sustain a roof, which gives some shelter to the
- 12:59sick. Infirmed, deformed and disabled.
- 13:04They wait each day for the movement of the water.
- 13:07They believe that when the water moves, the hand of an Angel
- 13:11causes the movement and the first to reach the healing
- 13:14waters will be healed. For 38 years the old man has
- 13:20been unable to move without great effort and pain.
- 13:26For 38 years he's been virtually disabled and nearly immobile.
- 13:30And for many years he has come to the pool, desperately
- 13:34waiting, watching and hoping each time to reach the waters
- 13:391st, and each time he is disappointed.
- 13:43As he lies by the edge of the pool, he hears people coming
- 13:48toward him. Some of the voices seem excited
- 13:53as he painfully shifts his way to turn and look in the
- 13:56direction of the commotion. They're standing before him is a
- 14:00man. A man unlike any other.
- 14:05There is no sign of threat in his face, and yet there is
- 14:09something, a power in his presence.
- 14:12It startles him, and he withdraws a bit.
- 14:17At first the stranger says nothing.
- 14:21The old man nervously looks into the eyes gazing upon him, and
- 14:26then the man speaks to him and asks, Wilt thou be made whole?
- 14:33The question floods him with yearning to behold again, to
- 14:36stand tall and walk among men. He's overcome with surprise that
- 14:41one would ask, and with the hope that this one can help him reach
- 14:46the water. He says, Sir, I have no man when
- 14:50the water is troubled, to put me into the pool, but while I am
- 14:54coming another step of down before me, then Jesus says,
- 14:59Rise, take up thy bed and walk. Before he fully understands what
- 15:07is said, strength begins to return to his legs and arms,
- 15:12sensations which he has long since forgotten.
- 15:16With his heart pounding and his thoughts in a swirl, he can only
- 15:21think to do is commanded. And this man, who for nearly 40
- 15:24years has been a helpless in village, stands and without
- 15:29pain, lifts his palate and walks away.
- 15:35Will thou be made whole? Do you want to be whole?
- 15:43Think of what transpires here. Jesus travels from from Galilee
- 15:49to Jerusalem and enters the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath.
- 15:55In most other instances, Jesus responds to the faith of those
- 15:59who seek him and request a blessing at his hand.
- 16:04Here Jesus seeks out the lame man who does not understand what
- 16:08Jesus offers when he asks if he would be made whole.
- 16:13And after performing this unsolicited miracle, Jesus walks
- 16:19out of Jerusalem and returns the long distance back to Galilee.
- 16:24Why? Why travel that long way to heal
- 16:29a man who has no knowledge of him?
- 16:32Was there not sufficient sick in Galilee to heal?
- 16:36Could there be a greater purpose?
- 16:40I don't know, but I wonder, could it be he does this
- 16:44deliberately on the Sabbath to dramatically place and stark
- 16:49contrast the living power of his ministry against the Jews?
- 16:55Ritualistic observance of the dead Law.
- 17:00Blessings come by him, from him, and because of him, even more
- 17:07than the Law. Stay with me.
- 17:12We're now at John chapter 6. Jesus returns to Galilee one
- 17:20day. He climbs a mountain and sits
- 17:22with his disciples. Thousands of people gather.
- 17:25They press to be near him, to hear him, to see him.
- 17:29The time of the Passover feast is approaching.
- 17:33As the multitude gathers, Jesus says to his disciple Philip,
- 17:38Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
- 17:44Jesus knows that they do not have sufficient money to buy
- 17:47bread for this crowd. He says this to test Philip, and
- 17:52Philip immediately considers what little money they have
- 17:55between them. He instinctively looks to the
- 17:58resources of the world for a solution rather than to Christ.
- 18:04He says they have not nearly enough to purchase food for the
- 18:07several thousand people who are now congregating.
- 18:12Andrew says there is a young boy in the crowd who has five
- 18:16loaves, loaves of bread and two small fish.
- 18:19But what is that for a crowd such as this?
- 18:25Jesus takes the loaves and offers thanks and divides the
- 18:29bread among his disciples. They in turn divide the bread
- 18:33among the people. Likewise the fish are divided
- 18:37and distributed to the crowd. Everyone is offered food.
- 18:41They all eat. They are all filled.
- 18:46No one is left hungry. They gather up the fragments
- 18:51which are not consumed. 12 baskets are filled.
- 18:55Nothing is wasted. The Lord amply and generously
- 19:01provides what neither man nor the world can provide in greater
- 19:05abundance than what can be consumed.
- 19:08His provision, offered through His disciples, is sufficient for
- 19:13all, no matter how many. The well in Samaria is the
- 19:20prelude to Jesus offering living water.
- 19:24Feeding 5000 on the heels of Galilee is now the prelude for
- 19:29Jesus to teach that He is the bread of life.
- 19:34Those who partake of the bread he offers will be sustained,
- 19:40have strength and life forevermore.
- 19:45Those who are sustained by any other source will hunger again.
- 19:51His words can be incorporated into the soul as literally as
- 19:56bread becomes the bone and sinew of the body.
- 20:01John Chapter 7. Jesus lead leaves Galilee
- 20:06forevermore one last time. He makes the trip back to
- 20:12Jerusalem. We find Him in the temple.
- 20:16The people are sharply divided about Him.
- 20:19There are many who are hostile and seek his life.
- 20:22Others believe in him but are afraid to publicly express their
- 20:26belief in the Temple. Jesus is challenged by certain
- 20:30Jews regarding his standing to teach.
- 20:34After all, who should listen to him?
- 20:39What is there to recommend him? He has no position, no
- 20:43authority. He's not a learned rabbi.
- 20:47He has no home, no property. He said he had nowhere to lay
- 20:53his head. He comes from an obscure
- 20:56village. Why would anyone listen to him,
- 21:01much less the hordes of people that press about him to see him,
- 21:06hear him, touch him? Why they say that is those that
- 21:14challenge him. How knoweth this man letters,
- 21:18having never learned? Jesus replies, saying, My
- 21:24doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
- 21:29If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine,
- 21:34whether it be of God or whether I speak of myself.
- 21:39Jesus is in the temple on the last day of the Feast of the
- 21:42Tabernacles. As part of the ceremony, the
- 21:46priests carry water from the Pool of Siloam in golden
- 21:50vessels, who then place the water on the temple altars.
- 21:54This offering is made as a petition to God for rain and
- 21:57good crops. As this happens, Jesus stands
- 22:02and cries out. If any man thirst, let him come
- 22:07unto me and drink. He that believeth on me, as the
- 22:12Scripture have said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of
- 22:17living water, meaning the spirit and power of the Holy Ghost.
- 22:22John chapter 8. We're getting there.
- 22:26It is very early in the morning on the Sabbath day.
- 22:30It is still dark. One man descends from the Mount
- 22:34of Olives. He crosses the little valley
- 22:37floor and ascends the heel on the other side to the eastern
- 22:41wall that surrounds Jerusalem. He enters the Temple.
- 22:46People are waiting for him there.
- 22:48He sits down and begins to teach.
- 22:51As he teaches, there is a commotion across the courtyard.
- 22:55A group of people, including scribes and Pharisees, move
- 22:58toward him. They hold a woman.
- 23:02Their intent is to cause Jesus to say something that will
- 23:05condemn him. They burst in on him and his
- 23:09small group and roughly placed the woman before him, saying
- 23:13this woman was taken in the very act of adultery.
- 23:18The Law of Moses demands she be stoned.
- 23:21What do you say? Jesus ignores them.
- 23:27He Stoops stand, and with his finger writes on the ground as
- 23:32if he does not hear. Hear them.
- 23:36They persist, they press for an answer.
- 23:39Finally Jesus stands and he looks at them and says, He that
- 23:45is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
- 23:53Those who brought the woman look at each other.
- 23:56Then they look down. They say nothing.
- 23:59They are unsure what to do. The tension of the air begins to
- 24:04dissipate as he again Stoops down and again writes on the
- 24:09ground. After some moments of awkward
- 24:13silence, they leave. One by one they go away.
- 24:18Jesus then stands again and looking on the woman asks woman,
- 24:25Where are thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee?
- 24:30She says, No man, Lord, he replies, neither do I condemn
- 24:37thee. Go and sin no more.
- 24:43John Chapter 9. Later in the same day as Jesus
- 24:49leaves the temple, he passes by a man who is blind from birth.
- 24:56He has never seen the light of day.
- 24:59The disciples asked if this man was born blind as as punishment
- 25:03for sin of the man or his parents.
- 25:08Jesus explains neither this man nor his parents sin and among
- 25:12other things declares I am the light of the world.
- 25:20He then does this amazing thing. He then spits on the ground,
- 25:26Stoops down and makes clay out of his spittle.
- 25:32He places the clay in his hands and then on the eyes of the man.
- 25:37He tells the man go wash in the pool of Siloam.
- 25:43The blind man obeys. Surely he does not understand,
- 25:50and yet he obeys. None of this makes any sense.
- 25:55He finds his way to the pool. He reaches out in the darkness
- 25:59and feels the cool water in his hands.
- 26:02He washes the clay from his eyes.
- 26:05And then, for the first time in his life, darkness gives way to
- 26:10glorious life. He was blind, and now he sees
- 26:17John chapter 10. Jesus teaches that his sheep
- 26:22hear his voice and follow him, for they know his voice.
- 26:27He says that he is the door of the sheep, saying, I am the door
- 26:33by me. If any man enter in, he shall be
- 26:36saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture.
- 26:41Now listen to this, He says, I am come, that they might have
- 26:45life and that they might have it more abundantly.
- 26:52I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd giveth his
- 26:55life for his sheep. John Chapter 11 Jesus approaches
- 27:02Bethany a short distance from Jerusalem.
- 27:05Mary and Martha are despondent. Lazarus is dead.
- 27:11Why had Jesus not come three days ago when first summoned?
- 27:16As Jesus approaches Bethany, Martha goes out to meet him.
- 27:20Mary stays in the house. Had he come, their brother might
- 27:25have lived. Now he is dead and there's
- 27:26nothing to be done. Martha finds Jesus on the
- 27:31outskirts of Bethany. She bluntly says if you would
- 27:35have been here, my brother would not have died.
- 27:39She also declares she is certain her brother will rise in the
- 27:42resurrection. Jesus replies, I am the
- 27:47resurrection and the lion. He that believeth in me, though
- 27:52he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth and
- 27:58believeth in me shall never die. Martha goes back to the house.
- 28:04She tells Mary that Jesus waits for for her.
- 28:09Mary leaves quickly and is followed by many of the mourners
- 28:12who are gathered at the house. House.
- 28:15She goes to where Jesus is waiting.
- 28:17She falls at his feet and flatly says, as Martha had said, if
- 28:23thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
- 28:28Jesus is saddened and weeps. Some of the people, seeing him
- 28:32weeping, comment on his love for Lazarus and say, could not this
- 28:37man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that?
- 28:40Even this man should not have died.
- 28:45Little do they know what it's about to transpire.
- 28:49No one imagines it. Jesus goes to The Cave where the
- 28:54body of Lazarus rests. Others follow.
- 28:58He commands the stone to be removed from the entrance.
- 29:01Martha objects. She warns him not to enter
- 29:05because now the body is decaying and the smell of death will fill
- 29:09the tomb. Tomb.
- 29:10It is too late to do anything. He says, said I not unto thee,
- 29:16that if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldst see the glory of
- 29:20God. The stone is removed, He stands
- 29:24at the entrance of the tomb. He lifts his eyes heavenward and
- 29:29says, Father, I thank thee that thou has heard me.
- 29:34And with a loud voice he cries. Lazarus come forth, and he who
- 29:43was dead comes forth. Most of the miracles recorded by
- 29:51the apostle John are those miracles which symbolize A
- 29:56redeeming truth about Jesus Christ and His mission on earth.
- 30:02Out of the exchange exchange between Christ and Nicodemus
- 30:06comes the foundational truth that one must be born again to
- 30:12enter the Kingdom of God. We can either believe and be
- 30:17born again by water and the Spirit and enter the Kingdom of
- 30:20God, or not and remain us with the foolish virgins outside the
- 30:26door. Jacob's well in Samaria provides
- 30:31the setting for Jesus to declare that he has living water to
- 30:35offer and that whosoever drinks of it will never thirst again.
- 30:41Either we believe and drink and never thirst more, or we don't
- 30:47and thirst still at the pool of Bethesda, he asks, Will thou be
- 30:54made whole? As with the lame man, we can
- 30:58either believe and seek his healing power and be made whole,
- 31:04or not and remain broken and incomplete.
- 31:10On the heels of Galilee, Jesus declares, I am the bread of
- 31:15life. If we partake of the bread he
- 31:19offers, we shall not not want. Either we believe and partake of
- 31:25the bread, His bread, the bread of life, and hunger no more, or
- 31:30we don't and hunger still. He gives sight to the blind man,
- 31:37blind from birth, and declares I am the light of the world by his
- 31:44power. We who are blinded and deceived
- 31:48by the world, by ignorance, deception, and sin, may come to
- 31:53see clearly, come to see things as they really are by the light
- 31:59of Christ. Either we believe and see
- 32:02clearly, or we don't and stumble in the dark.
- 32:08He is the door and the Good Shepherd.
- 32:11Either we believe and pass through the door into His fold,
- 32:15or we don't and we remain outside the door.
- 32:19He raises Lazarus from the dead and declares that He is the
- 32:24resurrection and the life. Either we believe and have life
- 32:29more abundantly, or we don't and remain dead still.
- 32:36The essential problem in life is separation from God our Father.
- 32:44That is the disparity between who and where He is and who and
- 32:50where we are. Jesus Christ alone bridges that
- 32:56gap if we will believe and follow Him to the end and help
- 33:02others do the same. Again, He is the way, the truth
- 33:10and the life in His holy name, Jesus Christ, Amen.
