- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Nothing else defines you quite like your family.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: It's where you got your name, your personality, your sense of place in this world, and so much more.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Some writers came from a supportive environment where his or her parents and extended family nurtured their talent.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: They were encouraged to write and express themselves.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Others were not so lucky.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: They had a much harder climb to writing success.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: They had to break out of a family system that didn't encourage writing, saw it as a worthless pursuit, or worst of all, was an abusive environment.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: In his book, The War of Art, Stephen Pressfield makes a keen observation.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: He says this often couples or close friends, even entire families, will enter into tacit compacts whereby each individual pledges unconsciously to remain mired in the same sloth in which she and all her cronies have become so comfortable.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: The highest treason a crab can commit is to make the leap for the rim of the bucket.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You know it's hard, probably nearly impossible, to break out of a dysfunctional family system.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: If you grew up in this kind of environment, or perhaps you're still there, please find other writers who can't support you.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You have bigger goals and brighter dreams than the cold gray nothingness that surrounds you.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: They might be your family or friends, but they don't define you.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: You have the power to define yourself.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So make that leap for the rim.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Is it easy?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Of course not.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: But is it worth it?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
