- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast, the Hell Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Yeah Edition,
- 0:13Speaker 1: as we take an in depth look at the Bengals
- 0:15Speaker 1: preseason opener in nineteen fourteen win over the defending Super
- 0:19Speaker 1: Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The song hell Yeah, by
- 0:23Speaker 1: the way, is by the band Lake Street Dive by
- 0:27Speaker 1: request alas I can't sing like the Great Rachel Price.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Coming up radio replays from Saturday's win, my one on
- 0:36Speaker 1: one conversations with two Bengals rookies who had impressive debuts,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and postgame analysis from Dave Lapham. The Bengals Booth Podcast
- 0:44Speaker 1: is presented by bud Light. Seltzer Refreshed the Game, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: here's a quick reminder that you can have the latest
- 0:50Speaker 1: edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 0:54Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify,
- 0:59Speaker 1: or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing since the Bengals
- 1:03Speaker 1: Booth soundtrack. My friend Jed de Musi, the former sports
- 1:08Speaker 1: reporter from Local twelve in Cincinnati, listens to this podcast
- 1:12Speaker 1: and did what he calls a labor of love. Others
- 1:16Speaker 1: might call it an incredible waste of time, but I
- 1:20Speaker 1: got a huge kick out of it and truly appreciate it.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Jed took every song I reference at the beginning of
- 1:26Speaker 1: this podcast and created a playlist on Spotify. It's one
- 1:31Speaker 1: hundred and fifty three songs and counting, beginning with One
- 1:36Speaker 1: Last Time from the Hamilton soundtrack and ending with King
- 1:40Speaker 1: of the Road recorded by Roger Miller fifty seven years ago.
- 1:45Speaker 1: That is until Jed ads hell. Yeah. So, if you
- 1:49Speaker 1: would like to see and or listen to all of
- 1:52Speaker 1: the songs referenced on this podcast, go to Spotify and
- 1:56Speaker 1: search for the Bengals Booth soundtrack, the only soundtrack with
- 2:01Speaker 1: both Alice Cooper and New Kids on the Block. Now,
- 2:05Speaker 1: let's get to football. We knew going into Saturday's preseason
- 2:09Speaker 1: opener that Joe Burrow would not play. He still might
- 2:13Speaker 1: at some point in the preseason, but Zach Taylor said
- 2:16Speaker 1: it would not be in Game one. Seven time Super
- 2:19Speaker 1: Bowl champ Tom Brady, on the other hand, did play
- 2:22Speaker 1: the opening series for Tampa Bay and took a hit
- 2:25Speaker 1: the third time he dropped back to pass. Rookies Joseph
- 2:28Speaker 1: Osai and Cam Sample are both in to rush. Tom
- 2:31Speaker 1: Brady On third down and ten, Giovanni Bernhardt packet and
- 2:34Speaker 1: running back lines up to the right of Brady, catches
- 2:37Speaker 1: a high shotgun snap, looking scrambling and sacked. Brady brought
- 2:42Speaker 1: down at the thirteen yard line, and as the Bengals
- 2:45Speaker 1: sack them on third and ten, rookie Joseph Osai got
- 2:48Speaker 1: there first and shared the sack with the Bengal's biggest
- 2:51Speaker 1: free agent acquisition, Trey Hendrickson. It was an impressive debut
- 2:55Speaker 1: for Osai, who had two other quarterback hits and to
- 2:59Speaker 1: tackle for loss in the running game. You'll hear from
- 3:02Speaker 1: him in just a bit, and he wasn't the only
- 3:04Speaker 1: Bengals rookie who made an impressive play right off the bat.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Fakes a toss to the right. Rosy receiver screen set
- 3:10Speaker 1: up for Jamar Chase, runs for the first down and
- 3:13Speaker 1: gets tackled inside the twenty five at the twenty three
- 3:17Speaker 1: sixteen yards on the receiver screen. First NFL touch for
- 3:20Speaker 1: Jamar Chase that helped the Bengals reach the red zone
- 3:23Speaker 1: on their opening drives. No score, first quarter, eight thirty
- 3:26Speaker 1: eight left. Here's a stretch run to the left. P
- 3:28Speaker 1: Ryan slices through a small hole makes it down to
- 3:31Speaker 1: the eighteen for a two yard rid. I'm setting up
- 3:34Speaker 1: third down in five. Tampa Bay says that that's a fumble,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and they feel like they've got possession of the football.
- 3:40Speaker 1: They're trying to walk off the field defensively and they're
- 3:42Speaker 1: saying it's Tampa Bay's ball. Following the p Rhyan fumble,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the Buccaneers drove seventy nine yards to score still a
- 3:49Speaker 1: two tight end formation for the Buccaneers. Here's a run
- 3:52Speaker 1: play for bon running left. He gets a push from
- 3:55Speaker 1: behind and he takes it into the end zone for
- 3:57Speaker 1: the game's first score. He saw Vaughan made it six nothing.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But the Bucks followed that with a comical mistake on
- 4:04Speaker 1: the extra point. They lined up in a trick formation
- 4:07Speaker 1: at the two yard line as if they were going
- 4:09Speaker 1: to attempt a two point conversion, then shifted into a
- 4:12Speaker 1: kicking formation and booted the pat But since twenty fifteen,
- 4:18Speaker 1: extra point kicks have started from the fifteen yard line. Therefore,
- 4:22Speaker 1: the Bucks were too close and Ryan suck Ups kick
- 4:26Speaker 1: didn't count. It was a preseason game for the coaches too.
- 4:30Speaker 1: On the Bengal second drive, quarterback Brandon Allen once again
- 4:33Speaker 1: drove the offense into the red zone a trail six
- 4:36Speaker 1: nothing shotgun snap Allan throws a little cut on the
- 4:39Speaker 1: run by Mike TLAs Hey bubbles the football inside the
- 4:42Speaker 1: twenty and the fucketeers recover at the twelve yard line.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Two drives, two red zone fumbles. Not good. On the
- 4:52Speaker 1: Bengals third drive, they turned it over again sort of
- 4:57Speaker 1: shotgun snap to Alan sets up a pass. His row
- 5:00Speaker 1: is the intercepted picked off at the fourth wall. Now
- 5:03Speaker 1: the ball is battered away by Mike Thomas and he
- 5:06Speaker 1: plucks it out of the air unreal. Javon Hagen intercepted
- 5:10Speaker 1: the pass and as he started to return following the interception,
- 5:14Speaker 1: the ruling on the field is a double change of possession.
- 5:18Speaker 1: First half. Boy, he just slipped out of his hand.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I mean as he's returning it. I don't know if
- 5:23Speaker 1: he's trying to change hands with the football or what.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But Hagan just lost possession of the football man and Thomas,
- 5:31Speaker 1: like you said, Dan, hustle right there pluck it out
- 5:34Speaker 1: of the air. Man. That that was one crazy play.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Two turnovers on the same snap, and the Bengals took advantage.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Closing out the half with their best drive of the night.
- 5:44Speaker 1: It's a handoff to Evans, he goes low, He's into
- 5:47Speaker 1: the end zone, touchdown Bengals with thirteen seconds left in
- 5:52Speaker 1: the first half, rookie Chris Evans scoring from the one
- 5:56Speaker 1: to give the Bengals a seven six halftime lead despite
- 5:59Speaker 1: committee three turnovers to just one for Tampa Bay. But
- 6:03Speaker 1: that stat turned in the second half. Griffin gets ready
- 6:07Speaker 1: to throw his pass over the big bable then pick
- 6:10Speaker 1: Henderson with the interception for the Bengals. He's running it
- 6:13Speaker 1: back and Henderson makes it down to the thirty five
- 6:16Speaker 1: yard line of Tampa Bay, where the Bengals take over.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Jayalen Davis with a breakup and Trayvon Henderson with the pick.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It led to a forty yard field goal by Evan
- 6:26Speaker 1: McPherson and a ten sixth lead. More of the same
- 6:29Speaker 1: than next time. The Bucks got the ball, catches the shotgun,
- 6:32Speaker 1: snap sets up and throws in the traffic dot Deer
- 6:35Speaker 1: intercepted by Frasier running back to the thirty five, the
- 6:38Speaker 1: thirty and Cavan Frasier catching the ricochet who goes out
- 6:43Speaker 1: of bounds at the twenty six yard line. Again it
- 6:46Speaker 1: was Jalen Davis deflecting a pass that was picked off
- 6:49Speaker 1: by a teammate that led to an Austin Cybert field
- 6:52Speaker 1: goal in a thirteen six lead. The Bengals not only
- 6:55Speaker 1: had the two picks in the second half, they put
- 6:58Speaker 1: a ton of pressure on Tampa Bay's quarter backs, finishing
- 7:01Speaker 1: with four sacks and thirteen quarterback hits. Darius Hodge, an
- 7:05Speaker 1: undrafted rookie out of Marshall, led the way with five
- 7:08Speaker 1: QB hits and one and a half sacks. Another Evan
- 7:12Speaker 1: McPherson field goal gave the Bengals at ten point lead
- 7:15Speaker 1: going to the fourth quarter, but a bad pass by
- 7:18Speaker 1: third string quarterback Kyle Shermer gave the Buccaneers some hope.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Shotgun snaps Sherman Ustro intercepted at the fifteen It's going
- 7:25Speaker 1: to be a pick six, Joseph Jones intercepting the pass
- 7:31Speaker 1: and running it in untouched for the pick six, and
- 7:35Speaker 1: just like that, the Buccaneers are back in this game.
- 7:38Speaker 1: A two point conversion made it sixteen fourteen with eleven
- 7:42Speaker 1: minutes to go, but rookie quarterback Kyle Trask was no
- 7:45Speaker 1: match for the Bengals pass rush. The rookie quarterback has
- 7:48Speaker 1: the ball he's back to throw, being chased running toward
- 7:51Speaker 1: the right side. I sacked brought down from behind by
- 7:55Speaker 1: Darius Hodge. My man. Hodge is killing it on the
- 7:59Speaker 1: edge since an. He closed out the game with a
- 8:01Speaker 1: clock chewing drive highlighted by a twenty four yard run
- 8:04Speaker 1: on third and two by Jaques Patrick and a twenty
- 8:07Speaker 1: two yard screen pass to Chris Evans. Austin Cybert put
- 8:11Speaker 1: the finishing touch on a nineteen fourteen win play clock
- 8:15Speaker 1: at ten, game clock at twenty nine. This will be
- 8:19Speaker 1: a thirty eight yard field goal try from the right
- 8:21Speaker 1: hash for Austin Cybert. The snap back to Huber, he
- 8:25Speaker 1: puts it down. The kick is up and it is good.
- 8:29Speaker 1: That should be coffin nails. I am Bam. Before we
- 8:35Speaker 1: go inside the locker room, we remind you that the
- 8:37Speaker 1: Bengals Booth podcast is presented by Bud Light Seltzer. It's
- 8:40Speaker 1: light and refreshing with a hint of fruit flavor. The
- 8:44Speaker 1: player who generated the most buzz was third round draft
- 8:47Speaker 1: pick Joseph Osai, who left the game in the second
- 8:50Speaker 1: half with a wrist injury. There's no update on the
- 8:53Speaker 1: severity yet, but he was in good spirits when I
- 8:56Speaker 1: spoke to him after the game. We're in the locker
- 9:00Speaker 1: room with rookie Joseph Oside. Part of the Bengals excellent
- 9:04Speaker 1: performance in the preseason opener and in your case, a
- 9:07Speaker 1: sack of Tom Brady on the Patriots opening drive. How
- 9:11Speaker 1: big of a throw was that? It was awesome? You know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I grew up watching him and it was again play
- 9:18Speaker 1: before Robin Harcouse. He was lined up against me, So
- 9:22Speaker 1: it was definitely dope seeing those guys and living a dream.
- 9:25Speaker 1: But I just know we got to get back to work,
- 9:28Speaker 1: so it'll be dope. We got great guys on that
- 9:32Speaker 1: line all over. You know, for him to get moved,
- 9:35Speaker 1: it was it was a team effort for him to
- 9:36Speaker 1: get moved to me. I just happened to be in
- 9:38Speaker 1: the right place at the right time, so you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: it was a great effort. I can't wait to see
- 9:42Speaker 1: how we grow as a team throughout the season. You're
- 9:44Speaker 1: being modest. I admire that technically a combined sack between
- 9:48Speaker 1: you and Trey Hendrickson, but was it surreal to look
- 9:51Speaker 1: down and see the goat after your first preseasons sack?
- 9:55Speaker 1: It was definitely dope, man, it was awesome. I looked
- 9:58Speaker 1: before the place started. I looked back and I saw him,
- 10:00Speaker 1: and I was like, mine, that's that's Tom Brady. So
- 10:03Speaker 1: it was definitely dope. But um, yeah, i'd be just
- 10:05Speaker 1: hopefully there's many more of those to come, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: And that wasn't your only good play. You applied pressure
- 10:11Speaker 1: on several occasions. How did you feel you did overall
- 10:13Speaker 1: in your preseason debut. Um, I can always do better.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I always like to could take myself like that. I'm
- 10:18Speaker 1: sure we'll go back and watch the film and there'll
- 10:20Speaker 1: be multiple players I could have made and things I
- 10:23Speaker 1: could have done better. But um, coach Hobby does a
- 10:25Speaker 1: great job of analyzing things on the sideline and letting
- 10:28Speaker 1: us see it quicker so we can play faster. So
- 10:31Speaker 1: props to him on allowing me to be loose and
- 10:34Speaker 1: just just do what I need to do. And then, um,
- 10:36Speaker 1: a couple of I had a lot of games that
- 10:38Speaker 1: allowed me to come free with my interior alignment camp
- 10:40Speaker 1: sample and Monnie bled show. They did a good job
- 10:43Speaker 1: of getting vertical so I could Uh, it's again, it's
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's a team effort, man. I just be in the
- 10:49Speaker 1: right place at the right time, that's all. It is. Man.
- 10:52Speaker 1: We're talking to Josefo say, it's a preseason game. Ultimately
- 10:55Speaker 1: it doesn't count in the standings, but anytime you play,
- 10:58Speaker 1: you want to walk off a winner. How does it feel? Sure,
- 11:00Speaker 1: it feels great, you know, um, and it's uh. It
- 11:03Speaker 1: definitely builds the team's confidence up. You know, we were
- 11:05Speaker 1: able to come out here and play against h I
- 11:08Speaker 1: don't know if anybody's heart, but those guys won the
- 11:10Speaker 1: Super Bowl last year, so it's definitely. Um it it
- 11:13Speaker 1: feels great to be able to come out here and performing.
- 11:15Speaker 1: It wasn't pretty, but um, we did what we could
- 11:18Speaker 1: and to come out with a win. That's that's that's
- 11:21Speaker 1: ultimately what you want to do, no matter what if
- 11:23Speaker 1: they're if they're naming my college coach, Oller says, if
- 11:26Speaker 1: they're naming winners and losers, we want to win the
- 11:27Speaker 1: damn thing. So we're glad we won. Can you describe
- 11:31Speaker 1: the feeling of running out onto the field for the
- 11:33Speaker 1: first time in an NFL game? You know, it felt surreal.
- 11:36Speaker 1: It did, and I tried all day to keep my nerves,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and as soon as I got on that field, it
- 11:41Speaker 1: was just all went away. You know. Um, I was nervous,
- 11:44Speaker 1: but again, the Vets, they did a very good job
- 11:47Speaker 1: of reminding us that this is just another game. You know,
- 11:49Speaker 1: we've been playing this game a lot of us since
- 11:52Speaker 1: we were uh peewee, you know, little guys and then
- 11:55Speaker 1: some of us, so a lot of guys maybe a
- 12:01Speaker 1: little bit later, but it's another game of football. And
- 12:05Speaker 1: the Vets, the vest did a really good job of
- 12:08Speaker 1: reminding in this stat and then obviously helped me calm down.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And then it's again, it's just time to play. So
- 12:13Speaker 1: I went on there did the thing. One game, one win,
- 12:16Speaker 1: a sack of Tom Brady. Not a bad start on
- 12:18Speaker 1: a best start at all. Hopefully we can keep going. Man,
- 12:21Speaker 1: it'll be awesome. Congratulations, Thank you so much. The Bengals
- 12:25Speaker 1: offensive standouts included running backs Jaquez Patrick, who finished with
- 12:29Speaker 1: seventy one yards on fifteen carries, and Chris Evans, who
- 12:32Speaker 1: had sixty combined yards between rushing and receiving. They got
- 12:36Speaker 1: extra work because of the absence of trey ViOn Williams,
- 12:39Speaker 1: who missed the game with a hamstring injury. Evans has
- 12:43Speaker 1: been impressive in training camp and it carried over to
- 12:46Speaker 1: his preseason debut. In the locker room with rookie Chris Evans,
- 12:50Speaker 1: who had an excellent preseason debut, scoring the bengals only touchdown.
- 12:54Speaker 1: How do you feel about your first preseason game in
- 12:57Speaker 1: the NFL. I feel good. Played a lot of plays
- 13:01Speaker 1: on special teams, in on offense, and I'm just you
- 13:04Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, just trying to learn and get better,
- 13:06Speaker 1: and I'm saying found a role on the team. Twenty
- 13:09Speaker 1: five rushing yards, thirty three receiving yards. I mentioned the touchdown.
- 13:13Speaker 1: You and jack Quez Patrick provided a nice one two
- 13:16Speaker 1: punch when the Bengals needed to run it out, run
- 13:18Speaker 1: out the clock at the end of the game. So yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 1: we mean, we practiced every day. We practiced hard. Older
- 13:24Speaker 1: gods push us. We work on ball security, you know
- 13:26Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And you know what I'm saying, Like
- 13:29Speaker 1: our co say, We're just trying to add value to
- 13:31Speaker 1: the team and do what we can for each other.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Describe the touchdown run I could have the play before
- 13:38Speaker 1: was close that I thought I was. I was gonna
- 13:40Speaker 1: reach it out, but I didn't want to because I
- 13:42Speaker 1: ain't want to know what I'm saying, risk of fumble.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So we came back to next play and we were
- 13:48Speaker 1: saying punch it in. The old line was punch it in,
- 13:50Speaker 1: punch it in, run the same play, and we did
- 13:51Speaker 1: it and I got in. I thought the short pass
- 13:54Speaker 1: to you at the end of the game was a
- 13:55Speaker 1: great call. I'm sure Tampa Bay expected a run. You
- 13:59Speaker 1: did a great job of scooting down the sideline and
- 14:02Speaker 1: staying in bounds to keep the clock running. Yeah. On
- 14:04Speaker 1: one of my plays, one of my inside zone plays,
- 14:06Speaker 1: I had run out of bounce I think the series before,
- 14:09Speaker 1: and it was on the sideline telling me to stay
- 14:12Speaker 1: and bound, so I'll try to cut it back in
- 14:13Speaker 1: so I have to stand bounce, so keep the clock running.
- 14:17Speaker 1: It's preseason game, doesn't count in the standings, but anytime
- 14:20Speaker 1: you take the field, it's fun to walk off a winner, right,
- 14:23Speaker 1: it feels good. I was talking to one of the
- 14:25Speaker 1: Shrimp coaches on the sideline and a winners a wind
- 14:27Speaker 1: no matter who you play. And you know what I'm saying,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Michael's talents before the game, you know what I'm saying.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And we're using this motivation playing the Super Bowl chance
- 14:35Speaker 1: before when we just moved through it and got a bunk.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Thank you. That an excellent camp so far. Congratulations on
- 14:40Speaker 1: a great first game tonight. Yes, I appreciate it. Here
- 14:43Speaker 1: are a few eye opening stats. The Bengals held Tampa
- 14:46Speaker 1: Bay at twenty nine rushing yards on seventeen carries. That's
- 14:50Speaker 1: one point seven yards per rush, and while the Bengals
- 14:54Speaker 1: weren't super efficient in the run game, they did finish
- 14:57Speaker 1: with one hundred and eighteen yards out on the ground.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The Buccaneers four quarterbacks had a combined passer rating of
- 15:02Speaker 1: thirty three point six and got sacked four times. The
- 15:07Speaker 1: Bengals did not allow a sack. Cincinnati's highest graded players
- 15:11Speaker 1: according to Pro Football Focus, where Trenton Irwin on offense,
- 15:15Speaker 1: he had three catches for thirty five yards, plus a
- 15:18Speaker 1: thirteen yard punt return and a tackle on kick coverage.
- 15:22Speaker 1: On defense, DJ Reader, Darius Hodge, and Joseph Osai all
- 15:26Speaker 1: had exceptional grades in short If not for the two
- 15:30Speaker 1: red zone fumbles in the first half, it likely would
- 15:33Speaker 1: have been a lopsided Bengals win. Now a time for
- 15:36Speaker 1: postgame analysis with Dave Lapham Lap It's preseason game. It
- 15:41Speaker 1: doesn't count in the standings, but being in the locker
- 15:43Speaker 1: room after the victory, it's obvious it meant something to
- 15:46Speaker 1: these guys to take on the defending Super Bowl champs
- 15:49Speaker 1: and beat them on their home field. Yeah, and I think,
- 15:52Speaker 1: you know their home field. Tom Brady came out there
- 15:54Speaker 1: and the fans started roaring. I mean, the environment was
- 15:57Speaker 1: pretty good and they had to respond to that and
- 16:00Speaker 1: they did. They did in a big way. And defensively,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I thought the biggest story was no explosives that was allowed.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You know, they just I think it was one play
- 16:09Speaker 1: of twenty two yards was the only thing over twenty
- 16:11Speaker 1: yards that I think occurred during the game. And then
- 16:14Speaker 1: they had you know, they had the three takeaways. Unfortunately
- 16:17Speaker 1: the four gives offensively, that has to be cleaned up.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But a lot of good things happened in the football game,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and when you had to make plays to finish the game,
- 16:25Speaker 1: they made plays to finish the game, particularly running the football.
- 16:28Speaker 1: And let's face it, Tampa new they're going to run
- 16:30Speaker 1: the football, and the guy still came off the ball
- 16:31Speaker 1: and Patrick got his pads down and just ran some
- 16:35Speaker 1: people over. A good night for several members of this
- 16:38Speaker 1: rookie class. Jamar Chase touched the ball once, had nice
- 16:43Speaker 1: gain on a screen passed early Jackson, Carmen played a
- 16:46Speaker 1: ton of snaps. Chris Evans was impressive at running back.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Joseph Ossai sacked the goat. Tom Brady cam Sample had
- 16:53Speaker 1: a sack at the end of the game to put
- 16:54Speaker 1: it away. Evan McPherson was perfect on his kicks. That's
- 16:58Speaker 1: good production for these guys in the first time it is,
- 17:00Speaker 1: and you know, it wasn't too big for him, as
- 17:02Speaker 1: Paul Brown used to say, you know, and uh that
- 17:05Speaker 1: to to get something like that um under their belts
- 17:10Speaker 1: to work from and improve upon, you know, I mean,
- 17:13Speaker 1: it's a good starting point and their miles to go
- 17:15Speaker 1: before they rest. But it's and it's always better to
- 17:20Speaker 1: do it after a victory. And again, the Buccaneers, they
- 17:25Speaker 1: may not have had their Super Bowl team out on
- 17:27Speaker 1: the football field all that much, but it was the Bengals,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you know, had guys that weren't necessarily going to be
- 17:34Speaker 1: counted upon to play a ton of snaps either. And
- 17:36Speaker 1: the fact is Tampa Bay's got a culture now, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and and and everybody is involved with that culture. I mean,
- 17:43Speaker 1: they have sixty one guys on that roster that were
- 17:46Speaker 1: Super Bowl members last year, so that kind of permeates everything.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And for the Bengals school out there and compete with them,
- 17:52Speaker 1: I think means something. You know. I know, it's it's
- 17:53Speaker 1: only a preseason game, it's the first preseason game, but
- 17:56Speaker 1: they went out there and went toe to toe with
- 17:58Speaker 1: a pretty good football team. One of the things we've
- 18:00Speaker 1: talked about time and time again so far during training
- 18:02Speaker 1: campus how good the coverage has been on a regular
- 18:05Speaker 1: basis during practice. That certainly carried over to the game
- 18:09Speaker 1: in Tampa Bay. And it wasn't just the starters top
- 18:12Speaker 1: to bottom. The coverage was excellent, I agree. And they
- 18:14Speaker 1: had you know, they didn't have a huge number of
- 18:17Speaker 1: bodies back there. They had some guys with soft tissue injuries,
- 18:20Speaker 1: and the guys that played plaster people pretty darn well.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I mean it was they suffocated that passing game and again,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you know, just one play off over twenty yards in
- 18:30Speaker 1: an NFL game, that's pretty impressive. I mean, all of
- 18:33Speaker 1: these guys were out on the football field for a reason.
- 18:36Speaker 1: They all played at a high level of college football
- 18:39Speaker 1: and be able to control and contain what they are
- 18:42Speaker 1: trying to do out there schematically, which is a good scheme.
- 18:45Speaker 1: You know, Byron Leftwich knows what he's doing as an
- 18:48Speaker 1: offensive coordinator and they you know, I'm not saying that
- 18:52Speaker 1: it was an unbelievable game plan. Everybody nobody's really a
- 18:55Speaker 1: game plan and all that much at this stage, but
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, you match up with guys and it's like,
- 18:59Speaker 1: you know, can I can I stay with you? You're
- 19:01Speaker 1: going to separate from me. For the most part, they
- 19:03Speaker 1: didn't allow any separation. They stayed right with him. Anybody
- 19:06Speaker 1: in particular really stand out to you, well, you know,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I think I think Patrick obviously, you know, took advantage
- 19:14Speaker 1: of a of a big opportunity. And the interesting thing
- 19:18Speaker 1: with me is Evans his numbers aren't going to show
- 19:20Speaker 1: the plays that he made. I mean, this dude was
- 19:22Speaker 1: like a whirling dervish out there. Man. He looked like
- 19:24Speaker 1: the Tasmanian Devil with those you know, three sixty spins
- 19:28Speaker 1: he was doing and going north and south. I mean,
- 19:30Speaker 1: he was pretty impressive and made some plays. And again
- 19:34Speaker 1: the rookie edge guys, you know, consistent, consistent pressure. There's
- 19:37Speaker 1: a there's a lot of guys that contributed, and honestly,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you know, watching McPherson kick of football, dude, that's like
- 19:45Speaker 1: a clean up home run hitter. That's like going to
- 19:48Speaker 1: batting practice when Ken Griffey Jr. Was with the Reds
- 19:52Speaker 1: and watching him and listening the ball come off his
- 19:54Speaker 1: bat man. I remember going down there the first time
- 19:57Speaker 1: to watch that. Dude. That was a show. I was
- 20:00Speaker 1: seen a guy hit a baseball like he did, and
- 20:02Speaker 1: Evan hits a football. You know that kind of crazy
- 20:05Speaker 1: as well. He gets that quick elevation, he smokes it. So,
- 20:08Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, there's a lot of you know, there's
- 20:10Speaker 1: a lot of good things that you know that they
- 20:13Speaker 1: can certainly build on. Sometime in the last week, I
- 20:15Speaker 1: asked somebody from the front office, Hey, give me a
- 20:17Speaker 1: guy near the bottom of the roster or somebody that
- 20:21Speaker 1: we're not even thinking about that's been impressive when you
- 20:24Speaker 1: review the tape on a nightly basis, he said, number
- 20:27Speaker 1: forty four Darius Hodge. And I'm sure a lot of
- 20:30Speaker 1: Bengals fans have watched the game on TV tonight are going,
- 20:32Speaker 1: Who's who's number forty four. I can't believe I didn't
- 20:35Speaker 1: mention him. With the edge pressure and watching him against
- 20:40Speaker 1: the Bengals offensive lineman and one on one pass rostrils
- 20:43Speaker 1: he carried it over. I mean, he's had a share
- 20:45Speaker 1: of wins. There's no two ways about it. Thing about him,
- 20:49Speaker 1: he's got a low pad level because he's got a
- 20:51Speaker 1: low center of gravity anyway. And the dude's strong now,
- 20:54Speaker 1: I mean, and he can The thing. The thing that
- 20:57Speaker 1: I like about him is there's not a whole lot
- 20:59Speaker 1: of waste did motion in the moves he makes. He's
- 21:02Speaker 1: always advancing towards the quarterback, and he's advancing, you know,
- 21:04Speaker 1: with a good lean, and he's he's he's got some
- 21:08Speaker 1: got some ability. I mean, there's he's got some physical
- 21:11Speaker 1: ability that you'd like to develop. There's no question about it.
- 21:14Speaker 1: He's he had he had himself a strong game tonight.
- 21:17Speaker 1: He had a sack and had multiple pressures to boot,
- 21:21Speaker 1: so that was a good definite on his part. I
- 21:22Speaker 1: agree with you. The last time we were down here
- 21:25Speaker 1: for a regular season game was twenty fourteen. I'll never
- 21:27Speaker 1: forget being on the field and ninety minutes before kickoff
- 21:31Speaker 1: or something like that, Andy Dalton comes out of the
- 21:33Speaker 1: tunnel and pukes into a garbage can and the Bengals
- 21:37Speaker 1: went on to win. He was definitely ill that day,
- 21:39Speaker 1: got three bags of ivs before kickoff and led the
- 21:42Speaker 1: Bengals to a win. Well, nobody puked as far as
- 21:45Speaker 1: I know, and the Bengals came away with a win.
- 21:47Speaker 1: They came away with a win. Osai has a little
- 21:50Speaker 1: bit of a risk issue that they got to check
- 21:52Speaker 1: out and make sure it's not anything, you know, significant,
- 21:56Speaker 1: and I guess until I get the final world and
- 21:58Speaker 1: that you hold your breath a little bit. But I'm
- 22:00Speaker 1: not sure that there's anything else that you know, is
- 22:04Speaker 1: mind boggling in terms of injury. And that was good.
- 22:07Speaker 1: That's a good thing too, because it was physical. I mean,
- 22:10Speaker 1: it was a physical football game. There's no question about it. Guys.
- 22:12Speaker 1: We were laying it out on the line out there,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and there's no doubt in my mind the temp by
- 22:17Speaker 1: Buccaneers did not want to lose the first game that
- 22:20Speaker 1: they lined up in front of their home crowd. I
- 22:22Speaker 1: have to winning a super Bowl in front of their
- 22:24Speaker 1: home crowd. I don't give a damn if it's a
- 22:26Speaker 1: preseason game or a scrimmage. They don't want to disappoint
- 22:29Speaker 1: their fans. And it was physical, and the Bengals answered
- 22:32Speaker 1: the bell and match the physicality. That's a good start.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Let's do it again next week in Washington. I'm with
- 22:37Speaker 1: your coach. The Washington game is Friday night at eight.
- 22:42Speaker 1: The football team opened the preseason with a nine point
- 22:45Speaker 1: loss at New England. That's going to do it for
- 22:48Speaker 1: This episode of the Bengals Booth Podcast, brought to you
