- 0:00Chris Daly is here with our daily recap. By the way, Debbie is
- 0:02on a zoom call. She's home because of work commitment, so you get
- 0:06to talk to Debbie by zoom. Awesome. Yes, well, they say
- 0:09survive in advance. You certainly did that exactly. It was. I think
- 0:15we slowed it down a little bit, and maybe we slowed it down a
- 0:18little too much, but I thought we took advantage. They were really tired
- 0:22during the majority of you know, the first half and into the third quarter,
- 0:25and then we lost a little bit of our gas in the fourth quarter,
- 0:28but made enough plays and did enough good things to win the game.
- 0:33Debbie talk, yes, talk about the defense that your team displayed pretty impressive
- 0:39in the first half and even as they get tired in the second half.
- 0:43Yeah, our defense was great that you know, they're a good defensive team
- 0:48when we were a good defensive team, and I just thought we took them
- 0:50out of most things they wanted to do. I thought we had a great
- 0:53game plan going in and we rebounded and got some key rebounds when we needed
- 0:58to. It was really the offensive end where we were struggling. There were
- 1:00points in the first half we kept holding them holding them, holding them,
- 1:03and then we weren't We're coming out empty on the offensive end. So I
- 1:07mean, there were opportunities for us to go up bigger early and we didn't.
- 1:11We weren't able to take advantage. But to their credit, to our
- 1:14kids' credit, we didn't stop defending, and we didn't stop understanding what we
- 1:19needed to do and limiting the looks twenty three points off turnovers that cancels out.
- 1:23I mean, Duke did a great job on the board tonight forty three,
- 1:26twenty eight, sixteen seven on the offensive glass, but just feels like
- 1:29they didn't take advantage of it enough. Well, you know, late in
- 1:30the second half, we weren't really going to the offensive glass. We were
- 1:34going back and trying to you know, wall up so that they couldn't get
- 1:37anything in transition. So you know, some of it we were running the
- 1:41shock locked down. Aliyah had the four fouls, and they were able to
- 1:46you know, we were really more concerned at that point. We were trying
- 1:48to get a good shot and get a good look and then we're trying to
- 1:51just to defend and not give up any threes. But we ended up giving
- 1:53up two anyway, I think. But it was great. You know,
- 1:57this is the same game we lost last year, and you know, I
- 2:01told Nika this in the locker room. I thought she had a great game.
- 2:05She made one shot, so, you know, people that think it's
- 2:07all about scoring, but her defensive game and her defensive presence and just she
- 2:14was just really terrific. Yeah, with a lot of big plays. Yeah,
- 2:17she she made a lot of big plays. Who was five for fifteen?
- 2:22Richardson, Oh yeah, I thought you meant. Nica was like,
- 2:25yeah, no, we did it. I mean, she's a good player,
- 2:29she's a tough player, and we made her score some ways. You
- 2:31know, we gave up some shots that she likes to her left and all
- 2:35of that, but overall, I thought we did a really, really terrific
- 2:38job on her. You talk a little bit about Aleiah picking up that fourth
- 2:45foul and how that changed dynamics for the team a little bit, just in
- 2:50how Brady had to come in and then when to bring Aleah back. Yeah,
- 2:55you know, it's we talk about this a lot with our players.
- 3:00You have to be really smart in these situations. You know, you have
- 3:04to assume that there's going to be one questionable call and then you can't have
- 3:08a dumb one so that you don't have two in the first half. And
- 3:13it ended up being you know, we took a chance and left to Leeann,
- 3:15and she ended up getting her third foul. Her fourth foul is an
- 3:19offensive foul. You know, that's that's something we should be better at.
- 3:23But you know, she still came. You know, that jump shot that
- 3:27she made was big. You know that coming off the bench, having to
- 3:30sit most of the second half, knocking that in at a time we were
- 3:34really needed to have. It was a big was a clutch play, Chris,
- 3:37What about some of the decisions down the stretch when the duke just would
- 3:40double and triple and tie the ball up? Babble is not just decision making
- 3:46or yeah, well it was more once. I think our players were expecting
- 3:53them to foul because they had fouls to give right and and you don't.
- 3:57You don't stand there and hold the ball like it's a loaf of bread.
- 4:00You got to pivot away and then make the pass and then have them have
- 4:01to attack someone else. And we didn't do that. Some of that might
- 4:05be inexperience, because I think KK got caught in that a little bit.
- 4:11You know, Aliyah a little bit at the end. So that's something that
- 4:15we're certainly gonna address tomorrow speaking of KK. And at least we have tomorrow
- 4:18to talk about speaking of KK. Yes, she was five or fifteen,
- 4:23but boy, she attacked the room pretty well tonight. She did. You
- 4:26know, I thought she made some big plays early on, and I thought,
- 4:29you know, then some of the decisions late. You know, we
- 4:32came out of a timeout and needed to we had a set play and I
- 4:38guess she saw an opening and decided to take it. It wasn't the shot
- 4:40that we needed at that time. So for the most part, she played
- 4:43really really well. You know, you can't really it's I don't look at
- 4:49them as freshmen because they've played so much as freshmen, but when you get
- 4:54to this point, they're still freshmen, you know. So they've never been
- 4:58in this moment, in this big and and so we win a game.
- 5:01How many points do we score? Fifty three? Okay? And Ashland didn't
- 5:05score at all, I know, So, you know, to do that
- 5:10without one of our leading scorers over the last you know, three or four
- 5:13games, sometimes you just have to grind it out. And that's what we
- 5:15did today. Debb, you got anything else? One more thing. We
- 5:19continue to talk coach daily about the astronomical number this program has done over the
- 5:26history. It's another Elite eight for your group. What do you have to
- 5:30say about that, Well, you're just you know, I'm really proud.
- 5:33I'm really happy for this particular group because there were a lot of there are
- 5:38a lot of firsts that they've experienced that have not been the most positive in
- 5:43the last few years. Just you know, two losses in a row,
- 5:46just all those kinds of things that happened statistically, So I'm really happy for
- 5:50them. I think it it says a lot about our program and the players
- 5:56that we're able to get because of the consistency. It's a lot of work,
- 6:00you know. I think people don't realize how hard it is. We've
- 6:03made it look easy for a long time. But I think I'm happiest for
- 6:08our players, especially you know, Nika and Paige. Well, not as
- 6:13much Page because she didn't play last year, but it was hard for her
- 6:15to watch, but Nika and Aaliyah really having to go through that last year
- 6:21and have an opportunity to be in the same position and to win the game,
- 6:25even when it got close, you know, so I'm happy for them,
- 6:28and that's a sign of maturity. And and now we have to,
- 6:31you know, prepare for Monday, all right. Take some ice baths for
- 6:34your crew, and we'll see them Monday night, all right, Thank you, Chris,
