- 0:27My name is Lachlan Wat and I am responsible for a project called Run.
- 0:35We put out our debut release in twenty twenty as a studio project that I
- 0:41was spearheading with a producer and a session drummer, and from there it had
- 0:46evolved through a few different lineups into being like a full band. And then
- 0:51in twenty twenty three we put out a couple of singles. There's a bit
- 0:55of a testing ground for that, and then now finally we have our second
- 0:59EP, True Heaviness Is Time, which is out now. Beautiful lock on.
- 1:03Thanks for joining us today, brother, thank you for having me Chris
- 1:07Bye, Well those are so Run today releasing a surprise EP titled True Heaviness
- 1:14Is Time. So why the secretive nature of the release? Mate? Like
- 1:18this this day and age, people don't like surprises. I might beg to
- 1:23differ like people seem to be really excited about the surprise bring Me the Horizon
- 1:26album last week? True? And I Yeah, I work in this industry
- 1:34and see bands just doing the same thing over and over again in terms of
- 1:40having pre orders and release rollouts and stuff. And I just thought that because
- 1:47I'm not beholden to anyone else or any record labels or anything. With this,
- 1:49it's like, why not just do it a little bit differently? And
- 1:55we've sort of because the singles. We've released three of the singles so far,
- 2:00and so people have already got fifty percent of the EP because it's six
- 2:05tracks, And if we were to announce the EP now and then have like,
- 2:09Okay, it's coming out in a couple of months, it's like,
- 2:13I feel like that would be a little bit deflationary, like you'd lose a
- 2:15bit of the excitement. And maybe we could have announced the EP a long
- 2:21time ago while we were rolling out these singles. But the way that the
- 2:23artwork is kind of all set up, it's like slowly reveals the bigger picture
- 2:28throughout the singles, okay, And I just think that it's a more exciting
- 2:32way to do it, and you kind of get a little taste of what
- 2:35the bigger picture is with each single and then now boom, you can see
- 2:38the full picture and you understand what we were doing. Yeah, I get
- 2:43it completely, bro. I think it's a great idea. It's just people
- 2:46these days, you find it's just that they're more structured with the way they
- 2:49do things, and I think it's a great idea to upset the Apple card
- 2:53a be it well done, thanks man, oh So, tell us a
- 2:55bit more about the EP from a musical point of view and what you're going
- 2:59for with it. The concept with Run has always kind of just been to
- 3:04be a collision or enmeshing of a few of my favorite subgenres of heavy music,
- 3:14like metalcore and deathcore, but like an old school kind of metal core
- 3:19sound with like post metal and the post black metal sort of thing. Some
- 3:23of the major influences of Run from the start have been like Deaf Heaven,
- 3:31Misery Signals, the Amity Affliction, Parkway Drive, Fit for an Autopsy,
- 3:39Converge, Rosetta, the Ocean, stuff like that, And I think that
- 3:47we've kind of created a sound that you can hear where everything's come from.
- 3:53But I think overall it's kind of unique. And then I don't really think
- 3:58there's any other band that's really doing this is the same mix in the same
- 4:01way that we are. And I think on this new EP, it's a
- 4:06lot more focused. The songwriting is a bit more cleanly structured, and the
- 4:12metal core sound element of it has come a little bit more to the forefront.
- 4:16I still think it sounds like exactly the same band, but the black
- 4:18metal side of things is perhaps a little bit less prominent, and there's a
- 4:25lot more breakdowns, which is fun and a way more satisfying to play live.
- 4:31And it's just kind of happened because of who's in the band now,
- 4:35and like the guy's writing that wrote these songs, you know, come from
- 4:42more of a metal core, hardcore background as opposed to the guy, the
- 4:46producer who I did the first EP with, who was more of like an
- 4:48artistic sort of post metal, post hardcore guy. But yeah, as I
- 4:55said, I still think it sounds like the same band, it's just a
- 4:58lot more focused and a lot more more Washey, oh now you released a
- 5:01single Summer, Spring and Autumn so far made so the names of them strongly
- 5:05suggest the common theme of seasons on the EP. Is that correct? Yes,
- 5:11So EP is called true Heaviness is Time, and it's you look at
- 5:15the cover art, it's like an intergalactic sun dial And I just liked the
- 5:23idea of splitting that into into the four seasons because the concept, well,
- 5:28there's an overarching kind of theme on the record about time and how it comes
- 5:34for us all and it's the most brutal, sort of unifying element of existence.
- 5:43And I just thought the seasons kind of lent themselves to some really nice
- 5:47visuals and color schemes and stuff. And when we didn't actually write the songs
- 5:54with the specific seasons in mind, it was like, oh, we got
- 5:57got a bunch of songs. Time to kind of figure out the concept and
- 6:00put it all together. And I was kind of like, this song has
- 6:03the most blast beats, and it's the most black metal sounds, the darkest.
- 6:08This obviously has to be winter. This song has kind of got like
- 6:13a bit of a bit of like the slow delayed kind of intro, and
- 6:18it's starting to get a bit darker. It feels like autumn to me.
- 6:21This song has the big melodic chorus that's obviously summer. This one's an explosion
- 6:27of energy. It's it's spring. And then to flesh it out a bit
- 6:34more, we have the title track as the intro, and then we just
- 6:38we had an extra song laying around and thought we'd do one more with one
- 6:44way out as as like a big finale sort of closer. All right,
- 6:48Well, what we'll do bro is like the EP's only got six songs on
- 6:51it. Like you say, so, well, I want to go through
- 6:54each track individually made and tell us a bit more about the song of what
- 6:57you're going for with it and how it relates to the theme of the record.
- 7:00So it starts with true Heaviness is Time. Yeah, So that's literally
- 7:05just like a title track and intro track. Like we started playing that song
- 7:12a couple of years ago, just as like a live intro, and it
- 7:17never used to have lyrics. It was just like a song to get the
- 7:21crowd ged up and I'd sort of do like a kind of hey, what's
- 7:25up, we are such and such thing over it. So there's no real
- 7:30concept or lyrics to it. I think there's like two lines of lyrics that
- 7:33aren't just the title itself, and that's so that's that song. It's pretty
- 7:40simple. It's just an announcement, this is what the EP is, this
- 7:44is what it's about, have some washing riffs to get you psyched up for
- 7:47what's to come. Has Sweet and Spring and featuring Joel Birch is up next.
- 7:55Yeah, So that's just kind of like a bit of a mission stay
- 8:00song. I suppose it's it's just about being alive and creation and trying to
- 8:07kind of link this ep into having like a spacey kind of theme, because
- 8:13that's always been a thing with Run Is, like the sci fi kind of
- 8:16space vibes, and the there's a there's a reference to like the Big Bang
- 8:24in the opening track, and that's basically just like all right, life has
- 8:31begun, creation is here, and then we sort of resolve that in the
- 8:37final track with the opposite end of that. But I think I don't have
- 8:43to think of hang on, give me a sec I don't. I don't
- 8:48know if there's any specific event or anything that inspired that song, but it
- 8:52is just kind of a lyrical waxing on being alive and how it's uh,
- 9:01you know, not always easy perhaps, but it's still a beautiful thing.
- 9:07Yes, right, then you've got Summer. Yes, Summer is it's like
- 9:15I'd say when I said, it's bright kind of musically, but lyric ah
- 9:24incredibly sad and were inspired by really dark subject matter. I had rewritten the
- 9:30lyrics to Summer and scrapped them several times over because I just wasn't really sure
- 9:35what the song was about and I wasn't happy with anything. And then when
- 9:41Ryan from Polaris passed away. It kind of something clicked and I understood what
- 9:48the song was about at that point, and getting John Floriani on the song
- 9:54to sing as well was really cool because I kind of ripped off some of
- 9:58his lyric from the last Trophy Ies record with the chorus, like because I
- 10:05think he's got a line on one of their songs that says like, if
- 10:07you go now, you only pass on your pain. Stay here, And
- 10:11what I wrote was like, you took your pain and you passed it on
- 10:16to others, and then a bit of a double meaning thing saying I took
- 10:20your art to recreate it as my own, as in like I've ripped off
- 10:24my friend here lyrically, and I'm sort of trying to be trying to take
- 10:28the passing, the untimely passing of a friend is something constructive, like because
- 10:33Ryan was a very inspiring talented musician, and I figured the best way for
- 10:41me to honor the deaths of my friends is to immortalize the feelings that I
- 10:48got from those events into songs. Oh and Autumn is up next, and
- 10:56that's interesting in the fact that it's the only one out of the season is
- 10:58that hasn't got a guest artist. Is there a reason for that. I
- 11:03tried to get a guest vocalist on it, and the one that I was
- 11:07going for couldn't do it, and so eventually I just was kind of like,
- 11:13well, if I can't get the big the big gun, then I
- 11:18will just do this one myself. So it's like I just thought fifty to
- 11:22fifty guest vocals, not guest vocals in terms of the tracks. But Autumn
- 11:31is another suicide inspired song. I wrote the lyrics to that song after returning
- 11:39home from Sean Kennedy's funeral in twenty twenty two. I believe it was Sean
- 11:48from I Killed the prom Queen, and obviously I killed the prom Queen.
- 11:50It has been a gigantic influence on my life, one of the reasons I'm
- 11:56playing this kind of music today. And I was incredibly gutted by Sean's passing,
- 12:03and I wanted to put those feelings into a song. And I suppose
- 12:13in a way, Summer is also about him as well, in terms of
- 12:18taking their art, taking the art of my friends, and sort of reinventing
- 12:24it in my own vision to keep their memories alive beautiful. Then you move
- 12:31on to our winter. Yeah, Winter is a Winter is a song that
- 12:39I wrote for my wife, basically about our insane connection that we felt since
- 12:52the moment we met each other, and just how passionate and volatile our relationship
- 12:58has and can be, and that it's kind of a song about how love
- 13:05perhaps isn't always easy and can involve a lot of just as much pain as
- 13:11it can joy, but how we work through it and grow together. Yeah,
- 13:18and you touched on the final track before One Way Out. Instead it's
- 13:22just just a bang and a close the album. Yeah, so One Way
- 13:24Out is kind of not really about anything specific. It's more just like a
- 13:28a philosophical song that probably ties more into the title track than anything else,
- 13:35just just about the nature of existence and some of my thoughts on that,
- 13:41and then the it kind of ties it all up about with this idea of
- 13:48everybody and the whole universe eventually kind of sucking sucking back in on itself and
- 13:54all light going into a black hole, and how it's all like a great
- 13:58mystery. But you know, contrasting Spring to One Way Out, it was
- 14:03like, here's the explosion in the Big Bang, and then One Way Out
- 14:07is like, here's the black hole, the end of I suppose it might
- 14:09be a double meaning the end of the end of life when when your time's
- 14:13up, and the end of the universe itself pretty deep. Now you've also
- 14:20got a limited vinyl run which also features your twenty twenty debut EP where you
- 14:26will Never Find Peace within Your Quiet as the B side. So tell us
- 14:28a bit about that. Yeah, so if you will ever find peace.
- 14:33Never really like got like a vinyl physic like it had like an art print
- 14:37set, but we never did a physical vinyl or a CD or anything.
- 14:41And so, because both EPs can fit on one side of a twelve inch
- 14:46each, it just seemed like a waste to do a single sided twelve inch
- 14:52or to like try and squash it down into a double sided seven or something.
- 14:56It was just like people have been asking for that release on vinyls since
- 15:00the start, well since it came out, and it just seemed like the
- 15:05most efficient way to wrap it all up. And visually, both EPs are
- 15:11very strongly tied together. The cover art for the first EP it starts off
- 15:18as the little tree and then goes up through the landscape until you get to
- 15:22out of space, and then the new EP is like looking back down on
- 15:26that landscape from out of space, and it's the same mountain that you sort
- 15:33of traverse through across the artwork on the first EP and all the different because
- 15:35all the different singles have their own artwork on both EPs, and you kind
- 15:41of traverse the landscape and then you get up into space for the second EP
- 15:45and you're looking back down on that first one. And so I think it
- 15:48just conceptually just makes total sense to have it all as a complete package,
- 15:52and so then we can get that out and then as I move towards whatever
- 15:56the next releases are going to be, there'll be perhaps a continuation, if
- 16:03not a fresh start, or a sort of bit of both with the concepts
- 16:08for that, you know, when where could people get themselves Ahold of the
- 16:11EP or the vital raw Stiff Cut Records will be launching very limited pre orders
- 16:21on the let me check the date, I believe it is the Friday,
- 16:23the seventh of June, and they're very very limited. I think there's about
- 16:30one hundred and eighty copies all up, and all the very variations are extremely
- 16:34limited. So it's a very cool collector's item, and it's very unlikely that
- 16:40either EP will ever be pressed to vinyl again, unless somehow Run blows up
- 16:45and gets really big in the coming years, which would be nice, but
- 16:48I'm not sure that I could really see that happening at this point, so
- 16:52it could just be a very much be just a one and done sort of
- 16:55thing. So if you've ever been interested in owning our release is on vinyl,
- 17:00you get to it. You got a frocker. Well, thanks very
- 17:03much for your time today, Bro, the ap true happiness. His time
- 17:07is out now, So babe yourself, copy yourselves like it's gott some interesting
- 17:11little little bits to go with it too. Light the cover and stuff too,
