- 1:55Speaker 2: Ruth and Boaz Unite In our last story, we were
- 2:00Speaker 2: introduced to Naomi and Ruth. Naomi lost everything because of
- 2:05Speaker 2: the death of her husband and two sons, and the
- 2:07Speaker 2: only person to remain faithful to her was Ruth, her daughter-in-law.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Both Ruth and Naomi ventured to Bethlehem, Naomi's hometown. There,
- 2:18Speaker 2: Ruth worked the fields of a kind and noble man
- 2:21Speaker 2: named Boaz. Boaz protected Ruth and showered her with favor.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Now we learn of Ruth and Boaz's connection and romance,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and their relationship begins a bloodline that would change the
- 2:33Speaker 2: world forever, as inspired by the book of Ruth.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas,
- 2:44Speaker 3: with today's episode of the Bible in a Year podcast.
- 2:48Speaker 3: In our last episode, we heard how Naomi and Ruth
- 2:51Speaker 3: journeyed from Moab to Bethlehem, Naomi's homeland. Ruth had pledged
- 2:56Speaker 3: her loyalty to her mother-in-law and embraced the God of
- 2:59Speaker 3: Israel as her own God. The two women faced a
- 3:03Speaker 3: difficult life in their new home. Both were widowed, and
- 3:07Speaker 3: they had no children to care for them. They depended
- 3:10Speaker 3: on the gleanings from the fields of harvest, which Ruth
- 3:13Speaker 3: worked hard to collect. it was there in the fields
- 3:17Speaker 3: that she met a man by the name of Boaz,
- 3:19Speaker 3: who showed her great kindness and mercy, knowing what she
- 3:23Speaker 3: had done for Naomi. Boaz was a God-fearing man who
- 3:28Speaker 3: was wealthy, generous, and protective of Ruth in her vulnerability
- 3:32Speaker 3: as a poor foreigner. And today we'll learn of a
- 3:35Speaker 3: deepening of this relationship and how Boaz and Ruth will
- 3:39Speaker 3: come together to begin a family line that will trace
- 3:43Speaker 3: all the way to the fulfillment of God's promised Redeemer.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Not just for Israel, but for the whole world. So
- 3:51Speaker 3: let's listen to this beautiful love story.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Ruth worked the fields of Boaz for weeks, and moment
- 3:59Speaker 2: by moment she pined after him. It was not his
- 4:02Speaker 2: wealth or looks, but the kindness and humility he displayed
- 4:05Speaker 2: to all his servants and workers. She spoke often of
- 4:09Speaker 2: him to Naomi. and Naomi's heart grew excited for Ruth.
- 4:13Speaker 2: She watched her sweet daughter smile as she spoke his name,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and welled with excitement before she left to work the fields.
- 4:21Speaker 2: As Ruth was speaking, Naomi interrupted her and said, Ruth,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you work so hard. Naomi stopped, wiping away a few tears.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It is my deepest desire for you to find rest
- 4:33Speaker 2: for your heart and hands. You should go to Winnow
- 4:35Speaker 2: Barley tonight with Boaz and the rest of his servants. Then,
- 4:39Speaker 2: after he has ate and drank... You should stay the night,
- 4:42Speaker 2: along with the others in his household. Uncover his feet
- 4:45Speaker 2: when he sleeps. That will wake him up gracefully so
- 4:48Speaker 2: you two can talk in private. I have a feeling
- 4:51Speaker 2: you will know where you stand after that. Ruth did
- 4:55Speaker 2: as Naomi said. She washed her hair and put on
- 4:59Speaker 2: fresh clothes and departed gleefully to the threshing floor where
- 5:03Speaker 2: people were winnowing the barley. She worked and laughed alongside
- 5:07Speaker 2: Boaz and the rest of the workers. Every once in
- 5:10Speaker 2: a while, Ruth and Boaz would meet each other's eyes
- 5:12Speaker 2: for a brief moment. The entire house ate together afterwards,
- 5:16Speaker 2: and the people began to retreat to their beds to sleep.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Boaz was the last to leave the dining hall. He
- 5:22Speaker 2: stumbled around the candlelit room and rested his eyes on
- 5:25Speaker 2: a heap of grain. Ruth watched from a distance as
- 5:28Speaker 2: Boaz fell into a deep sleep. She gracefully walked over
- 5:32Speaker 2: to the foot of where Boaz lay. Slowly and with
- 5:35Speaker 2: great care, she uncovered the blanket from Boaz's feet. The
- 5:39Speaker 2: slight breeze came in from the window and tickled his toes.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Boaz opened his eyes and sat up immediately. All Boaz
- 5:46Speaker 2: could see was a dark figure laying at his feet.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Ready to draw his sword, he said, Who are you?
- 5:53Speaker 2: I am your servant, Ruth, she whispered. Please, spread your
- 5:56Speaker 2: wings over me as a redeemer. Her heart was beating fast,
- 6:00Speaker 2: and her hands sweat slightly out of nervousness. Boaz was
- 6:04Speaker 2: known as a kinsman redeemer. In those days, kinsmen-redeemers could
- 6:08Speaker 2: marry a widow in place of a deceased relative in
- 6:11Speaker 2: order to take care of her. Ruth was truly asking
- 6:14Speaker 2: if Boaz would want to marry her. Ruth could barely
- 6:18Speaker 2: see Boaz's smile in the dim candlelight. He sat up
- 6:21Speaker 2: more and leaned over towards her and said,' In all
- 6:24Speaker 2: your time here, you have not chased after all the
- 6:27Speaker 2: young men here, whether poor or rich.' INSTEAD YOU HAVE
- 6:30Speaker 2: REMAINED HERE WITH ME, WORKED, AND BEEN PLEASANT COMPANY. DO
- 6:34Speaker 2: NOT FEAR, AND TAKE HEART, BECAUSE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU ARE
- 6:38Speaker 2: A WORTHY AND BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. IT COULD NOT BE SEEN
- 6:41Speaker 2: IN THE NIGHT, BUT RUTH WAS BLUSHING. BOEZ TOOK HER
- 6:45Speaker 2: HAND AND SAID, I AM NOT THE ONLY REDEEMER HERE
- 6:48Speaker 2: IN BETHLEHAM. THERE IS ANOTHER THAT LIVES CLOSER TO YOU
- 6:51Speaker 2: THAN I. TOMORROW MORNING I WILL SPEAK WITH HIM. IF
- 6:55Speaker 2: HE DOES NOT WISH TO REDEEM YOU, IT WOULD BE
- 6:58Speaker 2: MY ABSOLUTE PLEASURE. The two of them smiled at each other,
- 7:02Speaker 2: with only a dim candle and the crescent moon shining
- 7:04Speaker 2: on their faces. Ruth lay there at his feet until morning.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Boaz sent her off with more barley for her and Naomi,
- 7:12Speaker 2: and then Ruth left early so nobody would see her,
- 7:15Speaker 2: lest Boaz lose his honor. Ruth rushed home to bring
- 7:19Speaker 2: back good reports to Naomi. The two women laughed and
- 7:23Speaker 2: cried with one another. Naomi took Ruth by the cheeks
- 7:26Speaker 2: and said, Trust me. The man will not rest until
- 7:30Speaker 2: the matter is settled today. And sure enough, Boaz rushed
- 7:33Speaker 2: in the morning to meet with the other Redeemer. Boaz
- 7:37Speaker 2: sat at the gate of the other Redeemer, waiting for
- 7:39Speaker 2: him to come out to meet him. He thought of
- 7:42Speaker 2: Ruth while he waited and watched the sunrise. She was beautiful, humble,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and kind enough to take care of her mother-in-law when
- 7:49Speaker 2: she didn't have to. He sat and daydreamed, looking blankly
- 7:52Speaker 2: in the horizon. The other Redeemer walked from his home
- 7:56Speaker 2: to the gate and sat beside Boaz. There, Boaz spoke
- 8:00Speaker 2: of Ruth and Naomi, and asked if the man would
- 8:02Speaker 2: want to redeem her for himself. The man was willing
- 8:05Speaker 2: to redeem Naomi and her property, but unwilling to marry
- 8:08Speaker 2: her or Ruth, lest he muddy his own family inheritance. Therefore,
- 8:13Speaker 2: Boaz was given permission to marry Ruth and redeem her.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Boaz did his best to remain composed and hide his excitement.'
- 8:20Speaker 2: Very well, I shall redeem her,' Boaz said. The two
- 8:25Speaker 2: men laughed, and Boaz and Ruth began to make arrangements
- 8:28Speaker 2: for their wedding. The time had come, and all of
- 8:31Speaker 2: Bethlehem was there to witness the union of Ruth and
- 8:34Speaker 2: her redeemer Boaz. Boaz watched as his bride Ruth approached
- 8:38Speaker 2: the altar. She was beautiful, despite her brokenness. Ruth looked
- 8:43Speaker 2: at her redeemer and groom, Boaz. He was strong yet gentle,
- 8:47Speaker 2: and worthy of her devotion. The two of them were
- 8:50Speaker 2: married and experienced the bliss and unity of marriage. Together
- 8:54Speaker 2: they conceived a child and named him Obed. He was
- 8:58Speaker 2: the father of Jesse, the father of David, Israel's king.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Boaz and Ruth's marriage was but a thread in the
- 9:04Speaker 2: greater tapestry of God's marvelous plan. One day there would
- 9:08Speaker 2: be another wedding of sorts. The imperfect and broken bride
- 9:12Speaker 2: would stand before her strong and gentle Redeemer. A beautiful
- 9:16Speaker 2: picture that reflected a greater truth was unfolding. A picture
- 9:21Speaker 2: of God's love and redemption for His people and their
- 9:24Speaker 2: loving devotion to Him in return.
- 9:29Speaker 3: We begin today's story with Ruth working hard in the fields,
- 9:34Speaker 3: cleaning from Boaz's crops to feed herself and her mother-in-law, Naomi.
- 9:39Speaker 3: The kindness of Boaz has moved her, and she is drawn,
- 9:43Speaker 3: attracted to this man. Naomi, her mother-in-law, knew her culture
- 9:49Speaker 3: well and understood that Boaz could be a kinsman redeemer
- 9:52Speaker 3: for Ruth, one who married a widow after a relative
- 9:56Speaker 3: had passed on and then cared for her. Ruth was
- 9:59Speaker 3: now satisfied. much more than an in-law to Naomi. She
- 10:02Speaker 3: was like a daughter, and Naomi wanted to give her
- 10:06Speaker 3: rest from her labor. So Naomi instructed Ruth to wash
- 10:10Speaker 3: and anoint herself, in other words, make herself presentable, and
- 10:14Speaker 3: then to wear a cloak to hide her appearance. She
- 10:17Speaker 3: was to go to the threshing floor and stay overnight
- 10:19Speaker 3: near Boaz so that while he slept she could approach
- 10:23Speaker 3: him and uncover his feet and wake him. This would
- 10:26Speaker 3: provide quiet conversation for the two of them. Ruth did
- 10:31Speaker 3: exactly as she was told, and that night as Boaz slept,
- 10:34Speaker 3: she approached him, uncovered his feet, and laid down. Boaz awoke, startled,
- 10:41Speaker 3: and asked who was sleeping at his feet. I can
- 10:44Speaker 3: only imagine what a surprise this must have been to
- 10:46Speaker 3: find a stranger lying so close. This is a very
- 10:50Speaker 3: unusual approach to courtship, isn't it? Unusual, but very effective.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Ruth made herself known. Then she asked him to spread
- 10:59Speaker 3: his wings over her as her redeemer. The words may
- 11:02Speaker 3: seem odd to you and me, but to Boaz, the
- 11:05Speaker 3: meaning was clear. Ruth was asking him if he would
- 11:08Speaker 3: marry her. Boaz was touched by Ruth's request. He knew
- 11:14Speaker 3: she could have gone after younger men in town, men
- 11:17Speaker 3: who were also wealthy, but she had chosen him, and
- 11:21Speaker 3: he was captivated by her. He wanted to say yes
- 11:24Speaker 3: to this request. But he was also an honorable man
- 11:28Speaker 3: and knew there were other factors in this kinsman-redeemer tradition,
- 11:32Speaker 3: issues involving purchase of the land that belonged to Elimelech,
- 11:36Speaker 3: Naomi's husband. And that opportunity should first be offered to
- 11:40Speaker 3: another potential redeemer who was closer to Naomi's land. Boaz
- 11:46Speaker 3: explained all of this to Ruth and said he would
- 11:48Speaker 3: love to say yes, but first must speak to the
- 11:50Speaker 3: other man. He promised to do so the next morning.
- 11:54Speaker 3: And if the other man was unable or unwilling, he
- 11:56Speaker 3: would gladly redeem her. Even here we see the kindness
- 12:02Speaker 3: of Boaz. He was telling Ruth that one way or another,
- 12:06Speaker 3: he would see to it that she was redeemed. Ruth
- 12:10Speaker 3: returned home excitingly awaiting the outcome. Patiently waiting can be
- 12:15Speaker 3: a difficult task. We all know that. But Ruth and
- 12:18Speaker 3: Naomi did just that, hopeful but not insistent. Then Boaz
- 12:23Speaker 3: finally came with great news. He would be her redeemer.
- 12:27Speaker 3: The story, which began with three funerals, would end with
- 12:30Speaker 3: a glorious wedding and the birth of a child. Naomi,
- 12:34Speaker 3: the woman who wished to be called bitter, found joy again.
- 12:37Speaker 3: But God's work in her life was a witness to all.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Ruth 4.14 says, Then the women said to Naomi, Blessed
- 12:46Speaker 3: be the Lord who has not left you this day
- 12:48Speaker 3: without a Redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And the child that Boaz and Ruth bore, his name
- 12:56Speaker 3: was Obed, who would be the father of Jesse, the
- 13:00Speaker 3: father of David. David, who would be the great king
- 13:03Speaker 3: of Israel, the man after God's own heart, and the
- 13:07Speaker 3: progenitor of the Messiah who is yet to come. Dear God,
- 13:12Speaker 3: thank you that you have not left us without a redeemer,
- 13:15Speaker 3: one near to us and dear to us, our Lord
- 13:18Speaker 3: Jesus Christ. Thank you for showing this story that we
- 13:22Speaker 3: might see you. Through your son Jesus, you have redeemed
- 13:26Speaker 3: us and bought us out of slavery that we might
- 13:30Speaker 3: know the joy of knowing you, and overcome even the
- 13:34Speaker 3: most bitter circumstances of life. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for
- 13:39Speaker 3: being our kinsman redeemer. Amen. Thank you for listening to
