- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 111! We're really getting into the groove now. Lucas: We sure are. Today, let's talk about two verbs you use every single day. Luna: Ooh, I'm curious. Which ones? Lucas: To eat and to drink. In Amharic, to eat is መብላት. Luna: መብላት. That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is! Let's break it down. The root is ብላ. Repeat after me: መብላት. Luna: መብላት. Lucas: Good. And to drink is መጠጣት. Luna: መጠጣት. That one feels a bit easier. Lucas: Yeah, the root is ጠጣ. መጠጣት. Luna: መጠጣት. Lucas: Now let's use them in the present tense. I eat: እበላለሁ. Luna: እበላለሁ. Lucas: I drink: እጠጣለሁ. Luna: እጠጣለሁ. So the prefix እ means I? Lucas: Exactly. And the suffix ለሁ is the present tense marker. Let's practice a mini dialogue. If I ask you, 'ትበላለህ?' — do you eat? Luna: ትበላለህ? That sounds like 'you eat'? Lucas: Right. The prefix ት is for 'you'. For a woman, it's ትበያለሽ? But we'll stick with ትበላለህ? for now. So, Luna, ትበላለህ? Luna: አዎ, እበላለሁ. Yes, I eat. And what about drink? ትጠጣለህ? Lucas: Perfect! ትጠጣለህ? means 'do you drink?' And you can answer: አዎ, እጠጣለሁ. Luna: አዎ, እጠጣለሁ. Let's practice a quick scene. Imagine we're at a café. Lucas: Okay. I'll be the waiter. ትበላለህ? Luna: አዎ, እበላለሁ. ትጠጣለህ? Lucas: አዎ, እጠጣለሁ. I'll have a coffee. You? Luna: Tea for me. So እጠጣለሁ works for both of us. Lucas: Exactly. Let's repeat the four phrases one more time. I eat: እበላለሁ. Luna: እበላለሁ. Lucas: I drink: እጠጣለሁ. Luna: እጠጣለሁ. Lucas: Do you eat?: ትበላለህ? Luna: ትበላለህ? Lucas: Do you drink?: ትጠጣለህ? Luna: ትጠጣለህ?. Okay, I think I've got that. Lucas: You're doing great.
