• 2:07
Speaker 2: the capitol. We have confirmed he will be with us
• 2:09
Speaker 2: though on tomorrow's show. So should the City of Charleston
• 2:14
Speaker 2: have term limits for elected officials? Your mayor, city council,
• 2:17
Speaker 2: et cetera. Two people that say yes. Council members Joe
• 2:21
Speaker 2: Solomon and Shannon Snodgrass both joined me this morning. Good morning, Shannon.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: We'll start with you. Welcome to the show.
• 2:25
Speaker 5: Good morning, Dave, thanks for having me.
• 2:27
Speaker 2: But a while since you've been on, you've been you
• 2:29
Speaker 2: hadn't been there since we upgraded the studio.
• 2:31
Speaker 5: I know, and I'm very impressed.
• 2:33
Speaker 2: That's genuine simulated brick behind you. So so, just so
• 2:36
Speaker 2: you know, Joe Solomon is here as well. A good afternoon, sirm.
• 2:40
Speaker 6: Good after good morning?
• 2:42
Speaker 2: Did I say good afternoon? See here's the thing I'm
• 2:44
Speaker 2: on the I do this show, and I do the
• 2:46
Speaker 2: afternoon show. I'm just gonna start saying hello that because I'm.
• 2:48
Speaker 6: Gonna stick with good morning to get money.
• 2:51
Speaker 2: Good morning until it's morning for somebody. Now, what's you're on?
• 2:54
Speaker 2: Charleton City Council. What is your ward? Are you at
• 2:56
Speaker 2: alfe and Shannon Ward eleven? Ward eleven? Okay, so we
• 3:00
Speaker 2: got Ward eleven and you are at large Joe's so
• 3:05
Speaker 2: I'll start with Joe. I'll start with you. Why they
• 3:07
Speaker 2: need for term limits.
• 3:08
Speaker 6: I think we need some fresh voices on city council
• 3:11
Speaker 6: to bring some fresh energy. And basically, if you look
• 3:14
Speaker 6: at the current board of the ballot right now, there's
• 3:18
Speaker 6: you know, because there's an election happening. So the city
• 3:21
Speaker 6: has twenty wards. Of those twenty wards, eleven are uncontested.
• 3:27
Speaker 6: I mean, just one candidate is running. Of those eleven five,
• 3:31
Speaker 6: almost half are folks running for at least their third term.
• 3:35
Speaker 6: So an idea with term limits is that we invite
• 3:40
Speaker 6: more people to take turns. And so what we proposed
• 3:43
Speaker 6: is three consecutive terms as a limit, and a term
• 3:48
Speaker 6: is four years, so that's twelve You serve twelve years
• 3:51
Speaker 6: in a row, take a break, you want to come
• 3:53
Speaker 6: back later, welcome back, and that can rotate more of
• 3:55
Speaker 6: our neighbors, more fresh energy. And I think we've seen
• 3:58
Speaker 6: over least the that I've been on these last few years,
• 4:01
Speaker 6: that fresh voices really do make a big difference.
• 4:04
Speaker 2: Shannall, what about you? What do you think?
• 4:05
Speaker 5: And I'm one of the longest serving and I also
• 4:08
Speaker 5: co sponsored this bill. I believe strongly in term limits.
• 4:11
Speaker 5: We had them, We have that. I mean, if you
• 4:13
Speaker 5: want to see a mess, look at Congress. So I
• 4:16
Speaker 5: believe that it holds people accountable. It makes them realize
• 4:21
Speaker 5: that it's not I hear so often my ward my seat.
• 4:26
Speaker 5: I strongly believe I am renting that seat. I represent
• 4:30
  Speaker 5: the taxpayers. I don't represent other council people. I don't
• 4:35
Speaker 5: represent the mayor whomever is the mayor at the time
• 4:38
Speaker 5: we have we were elected by taxpayers.
• 4:41
Speaker 7: You have to have that.
• 4:44
Speaker 5: It becomes such a loyalty to leadership. When you have longevity,
• 4:49
Speaker 5: you don't have. It's the same policy, it's the same ideas,
• 4:55
Speaker 5: especially if you don't have much turnover at the at
• 4:58
Speaker 5: the mayor level. So that's why I believe in term limits.
• 5:02
Speaker 5: And because there is such a thing as incumbency advantage,
• 5:07
Speaker 5: you know, a name recognition. So a lot of people
• 5:10
Speaker 5: won't sign up because they know that. You know, there's
• 5:14
Speaker 5: several have and myself included, have been on council a
• 5:19
Speaker 5: long time. I was hoping that there was some you know,
• 5:24
Speaker 5: a lot of people reached out to me and wanted
• 5:25
Speaker 5: me to run again, both Republican and Democrat in my ward.
• 5:29
Speaker 5: So I think they believe I'm a strong voice on
• 5:32
Speaker 5: council and I do hold people accountable financially, especially so
• 5:38
Speaker 5: there's a few things I'd like to see happen, so
• 5:40
Speaker 5: I look forward to it.
• 5:41
Speaker 2: But now, okay, you've been on counseled for a while.
• 5:46
Speaker 2: How would this affect you if you and.
• 5:49
Speaker 5: It's not going to affect anyone on council at this time.
• 5:52
Speaker 5: It wouldn't go into effect until twenty thirty. So let's say, well,
• 5:56
Speaker 5: the first of all our bill that we proposed, there
• 5:59
Speaker 5: were five four of us. It got tabled in committee,
• 6:02
Speaker 5: which is another bill that I hope we get to
• 6:04
Speaker 5: talk about. So that wouldn't even take effect till twenty thirty.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: So if you've already served one term, that would go
• 6:12
Speaker 5: onto your clock, so you would have two more terms
• 6:15
Speaker 5: starting in twenty thirty. Well, we needed to revise the
• 6:18
Speaker 5: bill some. We put forth some amendments from to the committee,
• 6:22
Speaker 5: but the committee didn't add any amendments and clean it up,
• 6:25
Speaker 5: like to make it simple. Three terms start twenty thirty
• 6:29
Speaker 5: into story. The bill also had some staggering things in
• 6:33
Speaker 5: it which got a little confusing. But we're going to
• 6:37
  Speaker 5: resubmit the bill.
• 6:38
Speaker 2: There is there a lot of support, and you think
• 6:40
Speaker 2: among other council members for this. You know, off office,
• 6:44
Speaker 2: you have time, you have twenty of twenty, as Joe said,
• 6:46
Speaker 2: you have twenty ward members and then you have six
• 6:49
Speaker 2: at large, so total of twenty six. So is do
• 6:52
Speaker 2: you sense a lot of support from the and Joe
• 6:54
Speaker 2: after Shannon ways in you can wait and go ahead
• 6:56
Speaker 2: and go and channel.
• 6:57
Speaker 5: I'll be honest with you. Off the floor, they say, oh, yeah,
• 7:00
Speaker 5: we believe in term limits, especially for the mayor. And
• 7:02
Speaker 5: so I'm going to do a bill that says for
• 7:05
Speaker 5: three terms for city council. I'm going to do two
• 7:08
Speaker 5: terms for the mayor, treasurer and municipal judge.
• 7:13
Speaker 2: Make it like that.
• 7:14
Speaker 5: We're going to make it real clean. Starts in twenty
• 7:16
Speaker 5: thirty into story. If here's the problem. You've got council
• 7:21
Speaker 5: people voting whether they want to be career politicians or not.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: Perhaps I believe that you are a public servant.
• 7:29
  Speaker 8: You're not.
• 7:31
Speaker 5: Those seats are not career seats. You ask it what
• 7:35
Speaker 5: I'd love to see put it on the ballot. I
• 7:38
Speaker 5: guarantee you taxpayers want term limits, jo you.
• 7:42
Speaker 2: Want to follow up?
• 7:43
Speaker 6: Sure, So I shared some numbers earlier, but here's a story.
• 7:47
Speaker 6: In December and January, I held some workshops at the
• 7:50
Speaker 6: library about how to run for council, because it's a
• 7:52
Speaker 6: process that needs some demystification. So got that big room
• 7:56
Speaker 6: at the library, tried to fill it up December and January,
• 7:59
Speaker 6: and folks would come and I didn't any party any
• 8:02
Speaker 6: cause any platform, invited everyone, incumbents, newcomers, and we had
• 8:06
Speaker 6: a lot of fun. And at those workshops, what I
• 8:09
Speaker 6: heard from folks is they wanted to run, but they
• 8:12
Speaker 6: were scared about running against an incumbent. And three people
• 8:15
Speaker 6: actually told me through those workshops and offline too, three
• 8:19
Speaker 6: people from one specific ward said they were afraid to
• 8:23
Speaker 6: run in that ward. And I'll use a pseudonym here.
• 8:25
Speaker 6: They said, we're afraid to run against Big Bob. And
• 8:29
  Speaker 6: you know Bob's Bob's a good guy. You know he'll
• 8:32
Speaker 6: tell you there's nothing to be afraid afraid of him,
• 8:34
Speaker 6: and I agree. But there's this sense that they're going
• 8:39
Speaker 6: up against royalty, that they're not going up against a
• 8:40
Speaker 6: neighbor because you've been in there that long.
• 8:42
Speaker 2: And there is something that comes with what's called earned
• 8:45
Speaker 2: media too. And I don't necessarily mean what we do here,
• 8:48
Speaker 2: but you see this a lot maybe in especially like
• 8:51
Speaker 2: in the legislature and things of that nature. I mean,
• 8:54
Speaker 2: we interview senators and delegates all the time, and you
• 8:57
Speaker 2: can't tell them just because they're running for office that
• 8:59
Speaker 2: they can't come on and tell you about a water project.
• 9:02
Speaker 2: Now we can keep them from campaigning. Sure, you know,
• 9:04
Speaker 2: we can say you can't come on the ship, but
• 9:06
Speaker 2: you know what we can't tell what we can't really
• 9:08
Speaker 2: tell people. Okay, Senator Smith, you have this, you have
• 9:11
Speaker 2: this bill for Tucker County. I'll just use I'll just
• 9:14
Speaker 2: make that up or whatever. We can't say you can't
• 9:16
Speaker 2: come on the air. We're not going to interview because
• 9:17
Speaker 2: you're a candidate. So to your point, there is something
• 9:20
Speaker 2: to be said for that.
• 9:21
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 9:22
Speaker 5: I was just very disappointed that, you know, the committee
• 9:26
Speaker 5: or and it's in rules which hopefully we'll get into
• 9:28
Speaker 5: this other bill which plays into that. You know, they
• 9:32
Speaker 5: could have made some minor changes. We threw those out
• 9:35
Speaker 5: from the floor in the committee meeting, but instead it
• 9:39
Speaker 5: was just table. You know, I hope that the people
• 9:42
Speaker 5: that are listening, if you believe in term limits, reach
• 9:44
Speaker 5: out to your council person, reach out to your ward,
• 9:47
Speaker 5: reach out to your aut large members, reach out to
• 9:50
Speaker 5: the mayor's office, or come and speak at city council
• 9:53
Speaker 5: as a as a public speaker. If you feel strongly
• 9:55
Speaker 5: about term limits. I mean, it's it's time for some
• 9:58
Speaker 5: change across the bord.
• 10:00
Speaker 2: And you mentioned that it would be staggered because you
• 10:04
Speaker 2: could have with that many council people. You could have
• 10:06
Speaker 2: a disaster on your hands if you suddenly have twenty
• 10:08
Speaker 2: six new council members and perhaps a new mayor and
• 10:11
Speaker 2: the other positions that you mentioned as well. I mean,
• 10:14
Speaker 2: you know everybody looking at everybody going what do we do?
• 10:17
Speaker 2: You know, so you can't you can't have all new people.
• 10:19
Speaker 5: And the way that if you set the time limit
• 10:22
Speaker 5: for twenty thirty, then everybody's going to be by design staggered.
• 10:27
Speaker 5: Some people will have already served just one term. Some
• 10:30
Speaker 5: people won't be able to run again because that will
• 10:32
Speaker 5: be would have been your fourth term, so to speak.
• 10:36
Speaker 2: So what would you say to people that would say
• 10:38
Speaker 2: and I recall Robert Byrd. This is one of his
• 10:41
Speaker 2: famous quotes, is we have term limits. It's called the
• 10:44
Speaker 2: ballot box, and people can choose to vote either one
• 10:46
Speaker 2: of you. What would you say to somebody who says that.
• 10:50
  Speaker 6: I'd say that's what I would say if I was
• 10:53
Speaker 6: running again, I no understanding power. But when I talk
• 10:56
Speaker 6: to neighbors and potential candidates, that's not what I hear.
• 11:00
Speaker 6: I hear like, I want to run, I want to serve,
• 11:02
Speaker 6: I want to give my all, But I don't know
• 11:04
Speaker 6: if I can go against Big Bob, and that ward
• 11:07
Speaker 6: is uncontested, right, and that person's running for their seventh term,
• 11:11
Speaker 6: including one partial. So I just don't think it plays
• 11:15
Speaker 6: out the way that that talking point plays out. And
• 11:17
Speaker 6: if you look at the field of at large, you know,
• 11:20
Speaker 6: I'm an at large councilor generally a lot of folks run.
• 11:24
Speaker 6: There's six at large seats in the City of Charleston.
• 11:27
Speaker 6: In twenty eighteen, I think seventeen people ran. In twenty
• 11:31
Speaker 6: twenty two, fifteen people ran for those seats, and now
• 11:34
Speaker 6: fifteen people again are running for those seats. So why
• 11:37
  Speaker 6: is that? Well, I think it's because it's you're not
• 11:39
Speaker 6: entirely going up against an incumbent. It's not like one
• 11:42
Speaker 6: to one, right, you just need one of those at
• 11:44
Speaker 6: large seats. So I think the at large, the huge
• 11:46
Speaker 6: number of folks that run time and time again shows
• 11:48
Speaker 6: that folks want to run and serve Charleston. But there's
• 11:51
Speaker 6: this there's this anxiety around running against folks that are
• 11:54
Speaker 6: running for their third, fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh term
• 11:57
  Speaker 6: in their ward.
• 11:59
Speaker 5: And you know, it's back to the same thing. I think,
• 12:02
Speaker 5: if you want to be a public servant, do your part.
• 12:06
Speaker 5: I was on the Health Department for twenty years. I
• 12:08
Speaker 5: took myself off because that's just too long.
• 12:12
  Speaker 2: I loved it.
• 12:13
Speaker 5: We made a lot of changes on that board. But
• 12:17
Speaker 5: and now I just I feel like there's just so
• 12:20
Speaker 5: much you become loyal to leadership. We have a very
• 12:25
Speaker 5: large council. I'm not necessarily opposed to, you know, is
• 12:29
  Speaker 5: it too large?
• 12:29
  Speaker 1: Is it not?
• 12:30
Speaker 5: But what bothers me also is I don't think the
• 12:33
Speaker 5: public at large understands that council people get paid to
• 12:37
Speaker 5: come to meetings. We get paid. I voted know on
• 12:41
Speaker 5: our rays several years ago. They gave themselves a raise
• 12:45
Speaker 5: and along with some other elected positions. But we get
• 12:49
Speaker 5: paid two fifty for each meeting. But the biggest thing
• 12:53
Speaker 5: is why I also believe that there are some that
• 12:56
Speaker 5: want to run for council, especially if you're independently Floyd.
• 13:00
Speaker 5: You get full time benefits. For those of you listening,
• 13:04
Speaker 5: we get full time benefits. As a full time employee.
• 13:09
Speaker 5: That means full time healthcare. So and and I never
• 13:14
Speaker 5: even knew that the first term I served.
• 13:16
Speaker 2: No wonder people don't want to leave.
• 13:17
Speaker 5: That's exactly right, bingo and and I and and that's
• 13:21
Speaker 5: not what it's. It's not a career position. We rent
• 13:25
Speaker 5: that seat. We represent taxpayers. Let's keep it simple, you know.
• 13:29
Speaker 5: And and again, if if anybody ever wants to watch
• 13:32
  Speaker 5: a city council meeting, you should. It's it's online. It's
• 13:36
Speaker 5: quite interesting because some of these meetings almost are just
• 13:42
  Speaker 5: it's so there's not a lot of it's very rare
• 13:46
Speaker 5: that something does. I can't remember anything that other than
• 13:50
Speaker 5: some of the things that back a few years ago.
• 13:54
Speaker 5: It's very hard to see in any committee. I can
• 13:57
Speaker 5: tell you an example. I was on Finance committee. I
• 14:01
Speaker 5: voted no. I was probably the first no vote on
• 14:06
Speaker 5: finance in years. I got removed from that committee. Soon thereafter,
• 14:13
Speaker 5: I can't tell you. So the so even when it
• 14:16
Speaker 5: gets down to our other bill that we put forth,
• 14:20
Speaker 5: maybe our committees are broken when you don't have enough
• 14:23
Speaker 5: debate among them and enough diversity to even engage in,
• 14:28
Speaker 5: you know, some instead of going in with a preconceived
• 14:33
Speaker 5: idea or vote that that's not that's not good for
• 14:37
  Speaker 5: the city.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: Do you think term limits would help that?
• 14:39
Speaker 5: Councilors, Absolutely, because then you're not you're not engaged, and
• 14:44
  Speaker 5: I mean you're you're not. You know, You've got a
• 14:46
Speaker 5: short period of time to do what you want for
• 14:49
Speaker 5: your ward in the city, and you're gonna and you're
• 14:51
Speaker 5: gonna be passionate about it and still setting there thinking
• 14:54
Speaker 5: I got another ten years or I got another term,
• 14:56
Speaker 5: or you know, like Joe said, there's eleven that are uncontested.
• 15:00
Speaker 5: Some of mine have been uncontested. I have two opponents
• 15:03
Speaker 5: this time that signed up late so and ones from Tennessee,
• 15:09
Speaker 5: and I think the other one I'm not sure where
• 15:12
  Speaker 5: he's from. But and that's good. I think that's that's good.
• 15:15
Speaker 5: Let people have a choice.
• 15:17
Speaker 2: They're from Tennessee. One of them, well, it was okay
• 15:23
Speaker 2: residents living here now, okay, all right, all right, so
• 15:26
Speaker 2: what was your other bill? Because you said you want
• 15:27
Speaker 2: to talk about another and I'm going, Joe, let you
• 15:30
Speaker 2: start that, because we've got to start to wrap it
• 15:31
  Speaker 2: up here.
• 15:32
Speaker 6: This speaks to the council member stungrass is point that
• 15:36
Speaker 6: where in need of some committee of reform, and basically
• 15:40
Speaker 6: a lot of our committees don't meet and and and
• 15:43
Speaker 6: uh and and and they can be a lot more proactive,
• 15:47
Speaker 6: not quite as passive. And so what this bill does
• 15:51
Speaker 6: is it basically allows the council president to choose committee members.
• 15:56
Speaker 6: So it adds like another buffer, basically lets council governor itself.
• 16:00
Speaker 6: Only the mayor chooses council council members to be on committees.
• 16:03
Speaker 6: And but we are an independent branch. This says, we
• 16:07
Speaker 6: elect our council president and we ask them to do
• 16:10
Speaker 6: that for us through the process.
• 16:12
Speaker 2: That's what that bill does.
• 16:13
Speaker 6: And I think, perhaps more importantly, what it also does
• 16:16
Speaker 6: is it allows that those committees to choose their own
• 16:19
Speaker 6: chair and vice chair, to choose their own leadership, instead
• 16:22
Speaker 6: of relegating that back to the executive branch. And actually,
• 16:25
Speaker 6: let's that committee, that hive mind, that wisdom in that
• 16:27
Speaker 6: group figure that out. And do it every two years.
• 16:30
Speaker 6: Here's an example of why I think that would be
• 16:32
Speaker 6: a good idea. I'm you know, we generally cause trouble
• 16:35
Speaker 6: if I may, council Member Snoudgrass and Eye, and so
• 16:38
Speaker 6: we're not really put on committees that meet that often,
• 16:40
Speaker 6: you know. But one of those is that recycling an
• 16:43
Speaker 6: environmental committee, and we're on that committee with that with
• 16:45
Speaker 6: a good colleague, council Member em At Pepper, and he's
• 16:48
Speaker 6: clearly an expert in the in the environmental field. And
• 16:52
Speaker 6: if we were able to choose our own chair for
• 16:54
Speaker 6: that committee, I think would be a no brainer that
• 16:57
Speaker 6: we would say we we'd like council Member Pepper to
• 16:59
Speaker 6: be that chair. And so I would trust the process
• 17:04
Speaker 6: and I would trust our colleagues to figure that out.
• 17:06
Speaker 6: So that's what that's what that bill does.
• 17:08
Speaker 5: In just a comment. Another one that got tabled in
• 17:11
Speaker 5: committee or and it's in rules, the chair has not
• 17:14
Speaker 5: changed in two terms that I recall. That bill got
• 17:20
Speaker 5: tabled as well, needed some tweak because it was brought
• 17:24
Speaker 5: up by our city attorney that the president is pro tem,
• 17:28
Speaker 5: so we needed to you know, give her more authority
• 17:31
Speaker 5: to do that. But if you have the mayor who's elected,
• 17:34
Speaker 5: pick from elected city council to form your committee, and
• 17:38
Speaker 5: then the mayor picks the chair. Why do you need
• 17:41
Speaker 5: city council at all? Just let the mayor run the
• 17:45
Speaker 5: city because there's no separation of power. You know, you
• 17:50
Speaker 5: can't you just basically or again, it's too loyal to leadership.
• 17:55
Speaker 5: This gives it some diversity, It gives us some fresh
• 17:59
Speaker 5: opportunity for new policy.
• 18:00
Speaker 2: Okay, we're gonna have to leave it there, but real quickly,
• 18:02
Speaker 2: where does it go from here? Where are we now?
• 18:05
Speaker 2: On the on the on the term limits, term limits.
• 18:08
Speaker 5: I'm going to reintroduce a new bill, start over, make
• 18:12
  Speaker 5: it real clean.
• 18:12
Speaker 2: But I think at the next council meeting or I'm working.
• 18:15
Speaker 5: With the city attorney. At last two days ago, I
• 18:18
Speaker 5: already submitted it. I actually had submitted one of them.
• 18:21
Speaker 5: But I'm also going to include the mayor for term limits,
• 18:24
Speaker 5: and the municipal judge and the treasure add those in.
• 18:28
Speaker 5: Make it clean. Clean that bill up, and I think
• 18:31
Speaker 5: we're going to re on Joe, you speak to the
• 18:33
  Speaker 5: council one.
• 18:34
Speaker 6: I think we're just going to try other committee reforms
• 18:36
Speaker 6: and we're just going to keep trying. But I'll add that,
• 18:40
Speaker 6: you know, city Hall doesn't really run on the the
• 18:42
Speaker 6: the ideas of politicians. It doesn't run on it runs
• 18:48
Speaker 6: on wind power. And that wind is people power. So
• 18:50
Speaker 6: people make the wind blow. And so what we're really
• 18:53
Speaker 6: good at is putting our finger up, licking it up
• 18:55
Speaker 6: a little beforehand, and feeling feeling that for that win.
• 18:58
Speaker 6: And right now, the winds. We're not feeling much wind
• 19:00
Speaker 6: in city Hall. So when you talk to neighbors, they
• 19:03
Speaker 6: want term limits, They want city Hall to hustle a
• 19:06
Speaker 6: little harder, especially their council branch. And so I can
• 19:11
Speaker 6: folks contests to council meetings. We have public comment at
• 19:14
Speaker 6: every major meeting. They can write our ads, they can organize.
• 19:17
Speaker 6: We've got to we've got to make the wind blow, all.
• 19:20
Speaker 2: Right, we got to leave it there. Joe Solomon and
• 19:22
Speaker 2: Shannon Songres Charleston City Council. Folks, appreciate you being here.
• 19:24

Speaker 2: coming out of the city of Charleston and the area
• 21:41
Speaker 2: about the sports center complex and also the airports. Mister Solango,
• 21:46
Speaker 2: the President of the Canawa County Commission, was there for
• 21:48
Speaker 2: both and he joins us now Good morning, sir, welcome,
• 21:50
Speaker 2: good thanks for having me on. I do want to
• 21:52
Speaker 2: make a note. We'd hope to have Mayor Goodwin with
• 21:54
Speaker 2: us here this morning. That was a plan, but as
• 21:56
Speaker 2: they said on the Brady Bunch Bend, something suddenly came up.
• 22:00
Speaker 2: Do I get points for that reference? The absolutely She
• 22:02
Speaker 2: texted me last night said she couldn't join. I hate that,
• 22:05
Speaker 2: but well she was on Midday with us yesterday. Yeah,
• 22:08
  Speaker 2: I was on there. Yeah, yeah, I'm won't weare. I
• 22:12
Speaker 2: just I didn't want to make it like she was
• 22:14
Speaker 2: totally mia as well. No, no, no, she I guess
• 22:16
Speaker 2: something came up last night and then she texted me,
• 22:18
Speaker 2: but I'll good. We can chat about it. We can
• 22:21
Speaker 2: chat back and you know a little bit about this
• 22:23
Speaker 2: thing a little bit, all right, So you the other commissioners,
• 22:26
Speaker 2: several other elected officials were there, including Senator Kapado, talking
• 22:30
Speaker 2: about the sports complex. Now seven million dollars for Congress
• 22:32
Speaker 2: is coming. This was something that we started talking about
• 22:36
Speaker 2: back in twenty twenty one when there were a lot
• 22:38
Speaker 2: of bumps in the road. To put it mildly, and
• 22:41
Speaker 2: it's back on track. Take us through the entire process
• 22:45
Speaker 2: going back to twenty twenty one.
• 22:46
Speaker 4: Oh wow, bumps potholes, collapses of the road, you name it,
• 22:51
Speaker 4: this's happened. We've had you know, we came, we had
• 22:55
Speaker 4: this this concept of developing the old Macy's building into
• 23:00
Speaker 4: a sports complex to bring in sports tourism. Sports hourism
• 23:03
Speaker 4: is about a forty billion dollar a year in industry,
• 23:05
Speaker 4: and we're trying to get as much of that pie
• 23:06
Speaker 4: as we can. It's worked very successful at Shawnee. Shawnee
• 23:11
Speaker 4: is approaching the two hundred million dollar mark as far
• 23:16
Speaker 4: as its economic impact in the community and has been
• 23:19
Speaker 4: open for you know what seven years now, So that's
• 23:22
Speaker 4: that's a tremendous return on investment. And so we also
• 23:26
Speaker 4: wanted to do something near the Charleston Coliseum Convention Center
• 23:31
Speaker 4: to where you can combine both facilities and host some
• 23:35
Speaker 4: of the largest indoor travel sports in the nation. And
• 23:39
Speaker 4: so when we were looking at it and we saw
• 23:41
Speaker 4: that there was an opportunity to acquire the Macy's building,
• 23:47
Speaker 4: then that's that's what we did. And the purpose would
• 23:50
Speaker 4: be to have a center that the community can use
• 23:54
Speaker 4: all week and then on the weekends we would bring
• 23:57
Speaker 4: in these massive basketball and volleyball type tournaments and really
• 24:03
Speaker 4: generate significant economic impact We've seen it work elsewhere. It's
• 24:08
Speaker 4: working in Bridgeport, it's working in the indoor facility in Wheeling,
• 24:13
Speaker 4: it's working in other states, and I am certain it
• 24:17
Speaker 4: will work here, and so that was a thought behind it.
• 24:20
Speaker 4: We saw that it worked with Shawnee. We knew that
• 24:22
Speaker 4: if we had an indoor facility, it would work here.
• 24:25
Speaker 4: But we also wanted something for residents to be able
• 24:28
Speaker 4: to use during the week, and so the concept of
• 24:30
Speaker 4: the indoor sports complex was.
• 24:33
Speaker 2: Was hatched. Okay, And originally we talked about an aquatic center,
• 24:36
Speaker 2: and you've been on the show many many times over
• 24:38
Speaker 2: the years to talk about why that's not going to
• 24:40
Speaker 2: be a part of them.
• 24:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I wanted it to be a part, you know.
• 24:43
Speaker 4: But unfortunately, when you look at the cost estimates and
• 24:46
Speaker 4: also when you take into account what the experts that
• 24:50
Speaker 4: we hired to tell us what to put in there,
• 24:52
Speaker 4: this is not you know, it's not like I sat
• 24:53
Speaker 4: down and said, hey, this is the sport that I
• 24:55
Speaker 4: want in the complex, and certainly mayor Goodwin didn't that.
• 24:58
Speaker 4: We actually hired experts to do this for a living,
• 25:01
Speaker 4: to tell us what would work best here, and the
• 25:03
Speaker 4: aquatic center was not in it. But you also look
• 25:06
Speaker 4: at the amount of construction that would be required. You know,
• 25:11
Speaker 4: instead of a sixty or seventy million dollar project, it
• 25:14
Speaker 4: was going to be one hundred plus million dollar project
• 25:17
Speaker 4: plus an monthly maintenance of about one hundred thousand dollars
• 25:22
Speaker 4: or more for the swimming pool, and so it was
• 25:25
Speaker 4: just cost prohibitive. We have a certain limit on what
• 25:29
Speaker 4: we can do financially, and I think it would have been,
• 25:34
Speaker 4: at least at this time not financially feasible to do.
• 25:37
Speaker 4: And so we wanted to take a step back and
• 25:40
Speaker 4: look at what are the what are the sports that
• 25:43
Speaker 4: generate the maximum return on your investment, And that's kind
• 25:47
Speaker 4: of that's what we're gearing it towards. And so if
• 25:49
Speaker 4: you look at the swimming versus say volleyball, there's swimming
• 25:55
Speaker 4: is a big travel sport. I know, there are some
• 25:58
Speaker 4: aquatic centers that have been six well and then some
• 26:02
Speaker 4: have not. And so is look at a return on
• 26:04
Speaker 4: investment basically is what it comes down to.
• 26:07

• 26:19
Speaker 2: lot of the online chatter people were saying, you know,
• 26:23
Speaker 2: after the announcement was made, they've been saying it for
• 26:24
Speaker 2: the last couple of years about this, and we won't
• 26:26
Speaker 2: go into all that, but one of the things was
• 26:29
Speaker 2: what we only got, you know, until ten o'clock, and
• 26:32
Speaker 2: if we did that, we would both grow out full beard.
• 26:34
Speaker 2: It's while we're sitting here. But one of the things
• 26:37
Speaker 2: that people has said is that they felt that perhaps
• 26:42
Speaker 2: the center it was that there was a lot of
• 26:44
Speaker 2: emphasis place on bringing in these teams from out of
• 26:46
Speaker 2: state to play there, much like a Shannie, but there
• 26:48
Speaker 2: might not be a lot for just the local folks here.
• 26:53
Speaker 4: Address that, well, you know, I've yet to find a
• 26:55
Speaker 4: project that makes everyone happy. You know, it's impossible to do.
• 27:00
Speaker 4: It doesn't matter what you come up with. You know,
• 27:03
Speaker 4: Shawnee took the same criticism everyone said that we were
• 27:06
Speaker 4: going to. You know, we're in the process of building
• 27:10
Speaker 4: the Knawk County uh UH Sheriff training facility. That's taking criticism.
• 27:16
Speaker 4: You know, if you come up with an idea, there
• 27:19
Speaker 4: are always naysayers. It doesn't matter what the idea is.
• 27:22
Speaker 4: I say that if I was standing on the street
• 27:24
Speaker 4: corner handed it down one hundred dollars bills, somebody would
• 27:27
Speaker 4: be mad at me that I didn't have changed, you know,
• 27:29
Speaker 4: two fifties instead. And that's just the way it works,
• 27:32
Speaker 4: you know, that's the process. We listen to the criticism.
• 27:35
Speaker 4: We understand where they're coming from. Uh, But in reality,
• 27:39
Speaker 4: you have to do what you think is best. And
• 27:41
Speaker 4: I think that this is this is probably best. I
• 27:43
Speaker 4: also think it's completely untrue. We're going to have the
• 27:47
Speaker 4: facility we'll be able to use by the residence, particularly
• 27:49
Speaker 4: during the week There's going to be a gym, there's
• 27:51
Speaker 4: going to be U pickleball. Uh, there's going to be basketball,
• 27:55
Speaker 4: there's going to be volleyball. There's going to be a
• 27:56
Speaker 4: lot to do. There's going to be rooms where people
• 27:59
Speaker 4: can come in and have birthday parties and those types
• 28:02
Speaker 4: of things. So I think it is going to be
• 28:03
Speaker 4: kind of a community hub that it generates a lot
• 28:06
Speaker 4: of money on the weekends, and that's the goal. Just
• 28:09
Speaker 4: like Shawnee has been.
• 28:11
Speaker 2: We had a text here and I'll go ahead and
• 28:12
Speaker 2: throw it out there. Does the seven million dollars from
• 28:15
Speaker 2: the federal government make the town Center harder to acquire
• 28:18
Speaker 2: as a donation? The town Center because the property and
• 28:20
Speaker 2: let me give a little background here. Mayor Goodwin announced
• 28:23
Speaker 2: not long ago, months or two ago, that the city
• 28:26
Speaker 2: was in negotiations with the whole group, the owners of
• 28:28
Speaker 2: the mall, to possibly have them give the town Center
• 28:32
Speaker 2: as a donation. Textures wanting to know, will this make
• 28:35
Speaker 2: it now harder now that you get the seven million dollars?
• 28:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think so. I think it will. And
• 28:40
Speaker 4: by the way, the seven million dollars is not for
• 28:42
Speaker 4: the entire sports facility. I mean that that's going to
• 28:45
Speaker 4: be about between ten and fifteen percent, and then the
• 28:48
Speaker 4: rest will be funded through hopefully we can get some
• 28:51
Speaker 4: additional grants, and then we're going to have some corporate sponsors,
• 28:55
Speaker 4: and then we're going to have bonding as.
• 28:57
Speaker 2: Well, you know. So it's not like that seven million,
• 29:00
Speaker 2: seven million's not going to build the whole thing.
• 29:02
Speaker 4: It is not, but it was an important piece of
• 29:04
  Speaker 4: the puzzle.
• 29:05
Speaker 5: It was. No, it is.
• 29:07
Speaker 4: It is kind of what you know, the city and
• 29:09
Speaker 4: the county jointly have put in about five million dollars
• 29:11
Speaker 4: so far, but it was that's a massive piece because
• 29:14
Speaker 4: we each have bonding capacities. You know, we've had bonding limits,
• 29:17
Speaker 4: just like anybody would have a credit card then. But
• 29:19
Speaker 4: there's only so much money you can borrow. And I
• 29:22
Speaker 4: don't want to get the county, and I know the
• 29:23
Speaker 4: mayor feels the same about the city into any financial stress.
• 29:27
  Speaker 4: I wouldn't do that my business. I wouldn't do it
• 29:29
Speaker 4: at my house. I'm certainly not to do it for
• 29:31
  Speaker 4: the county.
• 29:31
  Speaker 5: So the.
• 29:35
Speaker 4: Issue is going to be whether or not the mall
• 29:39
Speaker 4: is acquired by the city. I don't think that this
• 29:42
Speaker 4: announcement is going to hurt that at all. That the
• 29:44
Speaker 4: mall owners are going to look at this as whether
• 29:46
Speaker 4: or not they can unload the mall and secure some
• 29:48
Speaker 4: type of tax benefit. It's not going to be a sale.
• 29:52
Speaker 4: It's not like they're going to sale it to the city.
• 29:54
Speaker 4: So it's not like they're looking for and you know,
• 29:57
Speaker 4: increased price for the mall. In fact, it may help
• 30:01
Speaker 4: the mall owners uh increase the value of the mall
• 30:05
Speaker 4: uh and get a bigger tax right.
• 30:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking it. So it makes the
• 30:09
Speaker 2: value of the mall go up. And then if they
• 30:12
Speaker 2: do the donation or whatever works out with the city
• 30:15
Speaker 2: portion of it or whatever, it's a bigger tax break.
• 30:17
Speaker 2: It's a bigger tix because and there are businesses that
• 30:19
Speaker 2: this right or wrong. This is this is what they do.
• 30:22
Speaker 2: They they they getting in. The whole group is not
• 30:24
Speaker 2: the only one. They go in and they acquire a
• 30:27
Speaker 2: piece of property like this, they set on it, they
• 30:29
Speaker 2: keep all the do all the things that you're supposed
• 30:31
Speaker 2: to do, you know, as far as paying taxes and
• 30:33
Speaker 2: so on and so forth, and then they unload it.
• 30:34
Speaker 2: And by unloaded I mean a donation or a partial
• 30:36
Speaker 2: donation or whatever. They get a huge tax right on.
• 30:38
Speaker 2: That's right, And that's not the fault of the whole group.
• 30:40
Speaker 2: That's the part that's that's the fault of the government.
• 30:43
Speaker 2: If if you've got a problem with it, what's Chris
• 30:45
Speaker 2: Rock say, don't hate the player, hate the game. That's
• 30:47
Speaker 2: the that's the that's the way this works. You know,
• 30:50
Speaker 2: it's in any of these large holding companies. Landholding companies
• 30:54
Speaker 2: can do that, and we see it from time to
• 30:56
Speaker 2: time here in Kanawk County, and this is one of
• 30:58
Speaker 2: those situations where it, you know, may benefit the whole
• 31:01
Speaker 2: group to unload it to the city.
• 31:02
Speaker 4: We shall see, so that will change. If the whole
• 31:05
Speaker 4: group does give them all to the city, then that
• 31:09
Speaker 4: will change the layout of the sports complex. You know,
• 31:12
Speaker 4: instead of building up, we may just build out. The
• 31:15
Speaker 4: mayor alluded to that yesterday, which could save significant money.
• 31:19
Speaker 4: Anytime you're building up, there's a lot more to deal with,
• 31:22
Speaker 4: a lot a lot more expensive, So then you just
• 31:24
Speaker 4: build out. It also potentially could change the entire footprint
• 31:29
Speaker 4: of the facility. I mean, there's probably more that we
• 31:31
  Speaker 4: could do.
• 31:33
Speaker 1: With the money that we have.
• 31:35
Speaker 2: All right, got a texture for you and then we'll
• 31:37
Speaker 2: take a break. We were sold on an aquatic center.
• 31:40
Speaker 2: We have plenty of basketball courts, pickle ball courts, volleyball courts,
• 31:43
Speaker 2: but only one indoor pool in Charleston. Stop saying you
• 31:45
Speaker 2: can't please every one? What about local kids?
• 31:47
  Speaker 9: Free?
• 31:48
Speaker 2: Sorry kids? That doesn't make money?
• 31:50
Speaker 4: You know, well that's you know, I enjoyed it. I
• 31:52
Speaker 4: like that concept. Now tell me where you're going to
• 31:54
Speaker 4: get one hundred million dollars to build it. Now tell
• 31:56
Speaker 4: me where you're going to get one hundred thousand dollars
• 31:58
Speaker 4: a month to maintain it. So if the texture could
• 32:01
Speaker 4: respond and tell me that, then we'll build it. But
• 32:05
Speaker 4: I can tell you that that I work very hard
• 32:08
Speaker 4: at this. I know the mayor does, I know city
• 32:10
Speaker 4: council does, the other commissioners, and now yet to find
• 32:13
Speaker 4: a solution for that issue. And particularly when you're talking
• 32:16
Speaker 4: about building it, maintaining it and letting people use it
• 32:19
Speaker 4: for free, it's just a I mean, it's not financially feasible.
• 32:24
Speaker 4: The math unfores math on math. So if the texture
• 32:27
Speaker 4: could let me know that, we'll jump right on it
• 32:28
  Speaker 4: immediately and we'll.
• 32:29
Speaker 2: Take a break. You can hang out with me just
• 32:31

• 35:31
Speaker 2: President Ben Selango is here. Senator Shelley Moore Capito was
• 35:34
Speaker 2: a big part of the announcement yesterday.
• 35:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what, So you know, the way that
• 35:38
Speaker 4: this worked out was we were actually we had received
• 35:41
Speaker 4: a congressionally directed funding an ear mark UH two years ago,
• 35:47
Speaker 4: and then there were issues in Congress. They didn't pass
• 35:51
Speaker 4: a budget, they just passed the resolution, and so the
• 35:53
Speaker 4: ear mark died on the vine, if you will. It
• 35:56
Speaker 4: just didn't come into existence, it wasn't signed into the wall.
• 35:58
Speaker 4: And so Center Capitol has been working very hard to
• 36:03
Speaker 4: make those ear marks that were there before happened and
• 36:06
Speaker 4: this was one of them. And this project would not
• 36:09
Speaker 4: have happened but for that ear mark. And so we're
• 36:13
Speaker 4: very very appreciative of that, and because I know she
• 36:16
Speaker 4: went to bat for us on that. It's that is
• 36:18
Speaker 4: not an easy sale. You've got so many different senators
• 36:21
Speaker 4: fighting for money to go into their state.
• 36:24
Speaker 2: Everybody got their hand out, and I don't mean that
• 36:26
Speaker 2: in a bad way.
• 36:26
  Speaker 4: That's what they're supposed to do. That's exactly what they're
• 36:28
Speaker 4: supposed to do. But she has you know, she's been
• 36:30
Speaker 4: in the Senate long enough to where now you know
• 36:33
Speaker 4: she's on appropriation. She has a lot of pool and
• 36:37
Speaker 4: West Virginia is definitely benefiting from that, as we saw
• 36:40
Speaker 4: yesterday just from some of the announcements. But she and
• 36:43
Speaker 4: Senator Justice worked very hard to get that congressionally direct
• 36:46
Speaker 4: to spending request and make sure that it was signed
• 36:49
Speaker 4: into law, which I found out about, I think was
• 36:53
Speaker 4: on February third. It was like ten pm. Somebody called
• 36:56
Speaker 4: me and I was I was ecstatic, not just for
• 36:58
Speaker 4: the Capital Sports Center, but also some of the other
• 37:02
Speaker 4: funding requests that were approved.
• 37:04
Speaker 2: So let's talk about the airport. Yesterday. There was ano
• 37:06
Speaker 2: big announcement up there yesterday about upgrades to West Virginia
• 37:09
  Speaker 2: International Yeager.
• 37:10
Speaker 4: Let me let me start with I don't think people
• 37:12
Speaker 4: realize how much money that airport brings into the community.
• 37:16
Speaker 4: It's around three hundred and sixty million dollars a year.
• 37:19
Speaker 4: Is what that the economic impact to that airport? And
• 37:22
Speaker 4: so anytime you can acquire money or secure money for upgrades.
• 37:27
Speaker 4: It's important, and this one is significant. It basically changes
• 37:33
Speaker 4: the entire look at the airport. It changes where you
• 37:36
Speaker 4: check in, it changes where you board. There's no longing
• 37:40
Speaker 4: to be multi levels. It changes the whole design of
• 37:44
Speaker 4: the airport as far as when you're approaching it. It
• 37:47
Speaker 4: changes the security area, so it makes the airport more secure.
• 37:51
Speaker 4: It was a significant, significant win for Charleston and Kanawk
• 37:56
Speaker 4: County in West Virginia. And it would not have happened
• 37:59
Speaker 4: but for Senator Capital a Centator Justice. Because twenty five
• 38:03
Speaker 4: million dollars a lot of money. That is a lot
• 38:05
Speaker 4: of money to get on a specific project. Then they
• 38:07
Speaker 4: were able to make it happen. I didn't ask them how,
• 38:10
Speaker 4: but they must have thrown somebody in a headlock and
• 38:13
Speaker 4: squeeze some money out of them.
• 38:14
Speaker 2: Let's go back to the Sports Center for a moment.
• 38:16
Speaker 2: So where are we now now? I mean the announcement
• 38:18
Speaker 2: has been made, So what next?
• 38:20
Speaker 4: So now we need to see if the city's going
• 38:23
Speaker 4: to actually acquire part or all of them all, and
• 38:26
Speaker 4: if that happens, we will look at a modified design.
• 38:29
Speaker 4: If it doesn't happen, we'll probably move forward with the
• 38:32
Speaker 4: design that we had a couple of years ago, which
• 38:35
Speaker 4: is the multi floor you know, three level design. If
• 38:38
Speaker 4: we can make it one level, that's better, But if
• 38:42
Speaker 4: we have to go to multi level, we will and
• 38:45
Speaker 4: you know, if it's one level, we'll be able to
• 38:46
Speaker 4: expand the indoor running track, for instance, We've got to
• 38:49
Speaker 4: do a lot more. And so we want to see
• 38:51
Speaker 4: how those talks go between the city and the whole
• 38:54
Speaker 4: group and hopefully those will be fruitful and if so,
• 38:57
Speaker 4: then we we'll modify the design and then we'll get
• 39:00
Speaker 4: you know, the architect then has to actually come up
• 39:02
Speaker 4: with the the blueprints, the actual designs. That's going to
• 39:06
Speaker 4: take six months to a year, probably closer to a year.
• 39:10
Speaker 4: And as soon as the design's done, we can break around.
• 39:14
Speaker 2: And we want to make sure people realize that if
• 39:16
Speaker 2: you think that here it is February the nineteenth, If
• 39:20
Speaker 2: you think you're going to roll into town in May
• 39:22
Speaker 2: and think that the sports center is going to be done,
• 39:24
Speaker 2: not going to happen. It's going to be several years
• 39:26
Speaker 2: down the several years.
• 39:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, it takes any of these big projects. I mean
• 39:29
Speaker 4: we've had water projects we're working on that have that
• 39:32
Speaker 4: have gone on for almost twenty years. The all Caught
• 39:35
Speaker 4: Water project, what we've been working on is now in
• 39:38
Speaker 4: its eighth or ninth year since we started. So, you know,
• 39:42
Speaker 4: some of these projects, even when what you're dealing with
• 39:44
Speaker 4: federal money and trying to acquire different pots of money
• 39:50
Speaker 4: from the state or the Feds, it just it takes
• 39:52
Speaker 4: a long time. And these are not projects that the
• 39:55
Speaker 4: county or the city could afford to do by themselves.
• 39:57
Speaker 4: There's no way possible. So so getting those partners and
• 40:01
Speaker 4: helping us out is essential, and so the projects just
• 40:04
Speaker 4: take time. Unfortunately, if I can have it done by May,
• 40:07
Speaker 4: it would be done by May, I promise. But all right,
• 40:10
Speaker 4: I know you got to leave.
• 40:10
Speaker 2: But I had another question that had yesting to do
• 40:12
Speaker 2: with what we're talking about. If the person wanted to
• 40:14
Speaker 2: know any known plans to replace the former Kanaw County
• 40:17
Speaker 2: landfill with the new operation anytime soon, Commissioner, I.
• 40:20
Speaker 4: Think there are plans that they're looking at, and but
• 40:24
Speaker 4: I don't know the details of it. I can try
• 40:26
Speaker 4: to find out and maybe we can chat about that
• 40:28
Speaker 4: when next time I come on. But I think there
• 40:30
Speaker 4: are plans, but I don't know the details.

• 44:34
Speaker 2: and he's the president and CEO of a Blue Ridge
• 44:38
Speaker 2: Care just over the border from the Eastern Panhandle, and
• 44:41
Speaker 2: he's hoping to do some good things in West Virginia
• 44:43
Speaker 2: related to healthcare, specifically elder care. So Jason, who actually
• 44:47
Speaker 2: lives in West Virginia, is going to talk about it,
• 44:48
Speaker 2: whether it's Jeff Jenkins will be here with the news
• 44:50
Speaker 2: and more. Metro News Midday powered by Selango Law with
• 44:53
Speaker 2: thirteen News and Tonight Live anchor Amanda Baron and Me
• 44:55
Speaker 2: coming up at noon today. I do want to mention
• 44:58
Speaker 2: something quickly from yesterday's show. I told you about the
• 45:01
Speaker 2: tractor trailer accident that happened around three or so yesterday
• 45:04
Speaker 2: afternoon on the corridor near the shops a trace Fork.
• 45:07
Speaker 2: I was held up in that mess Tuesday afternoon. After
• 45:11
Speaker 2: seeing the overturn and after seeing the overturned tractor trailer,
• 45:14
Speaker 2: I just wondered, what in the heck happened. And it
• 45:17
Speaker 2: may have come off on the show like I was
• 45:19
Speaker 2: blaming the truck driver.
• 45:20
  Speaker 11: I was not.
• 45:21
Speaker 2: I was simply asking how it happened. Well, thanks to
• 45:23
Speaker 2: many of you, I found out what happened. This is
• 45:26
Speaker 2: why I always say we had the greatest listeners in
• 45:28
Speaker 2: the world. Several of you sent me the dash cam
• 45:31
Speaker 2: clip taken from the truck driver's perspective, and it appears
• 45:35
Speaker 2: that someone in a car at the last moment decided
• 45:38
Speaker 2: to exit the shops a trace fork directly in front
• 45:41
Speaker 2: of the truck, and the driver then swerved to miss
• 45:44
Speaker 2: the car, and that's how it happened. So my apologies.
• 45:47
Speaker 2: If it came off like I was blaming the truck driver,
• 45:49
Speaker 2: I wasn't. I was simply questioning how it would have happened.
• 45:52
Speaker 2: And again, so many of you reached out to me.
• 45:54
Speaker 2: I definitely do appreciate it, so I just wanted to
• 45:58
Speaker 2: just wanted to kind of get that out there quickly.
• 46:01
Speaker 2: A couple of quick texts. There are term limits. They're
• 46:04
Speaker 2: called voters. They vote in or out. It is up
• 46:07
Speaker 2: to them, says a tankster.
• 46:11
  Speaker 4: Dave.
• 46:12
Speaker 2: I went to the world's largest Chick fil A formerly
• 46:14
Speaker 2: known as a town Center, the other day. It was
• 46:15
Speaker 2: a pleasant visit. I think people are too caught up
• 46:18
Speaker 2: what the town Center was and are sleeping on what
• 46:20
Speaker 2: it is. One of the few third spaces in the
• 46:23
Speaker 2: valley people can just be without an upfront cost, says
• 46:26
Speaker 2: a tankster. And now I'll say this and then we'll
• 46:30
Speaker 2: go to Wilson and Meadows. You're standing by live at
• 46:32
Speaker 2: the Capitol. I will say this. It is on the
• 46:35
Speaker 2: sports project or anything else. It is so easy. This
• 46:38
Speaker 2: is editorializing on my part. It is so easy for
• 46:41
Speaker 2: people who have never attempted to create anything to set
• 46:45
Speaker 2: back on social media and crap on a project. People
• 46:50
Speaker 2: for the most part, who have never attended a meeting,
• 46:52
Speaker 2: never lifted a finger to do anything but to complain online.
• 46:57
Speaker 2: You are welcome to attend Charleston City Council meeting. You're
• 47:01
Speaker 2: welcome to attended County Commission meeting and give them your ideas,
• 47:05
Speaker 2: or better yet, roll up your sleeves and be an entrepreneur.
• 47:09
Speaker 2: It is National Entrepreneurship Week. I learned that yesterday I
• 47:11
Speaker 2: met tring new his midday. Uh but I just I
• 47:14
Speaker 2: was reading the comments on the proposed sports center, and
• 47:17
Speaker 2: I just I mean, and I'm not talking about people saying,
• 47:19
Speaker 2: well I think you should do this. I think you
• 47:21
Speaker 2: should that. There's no problem with that at all. Okay,
• 47:23
Speaker 2: what I am is people. What I do have a
• 47:25
Speaker 2: problem with is that people that are so uninformed that
• 47:28
Speaker 2: they just say this is a total waste of money
• 47:31
Speaker 2: and that they're that nobody's going to go there. And
• 47:33
Speaker 2: people say, well, no, we just need we just need
• 47:36
Speaker 2: to put a you know, elder care in it. Look,
• 47:37
Speaker 2: I like old people as much as the next person. Okay,
• 47:39
Speaker 2: but that's not going to bring in a lot of
• 47:41
Speaker 2: money to Charleston. Okay, this is a great idea in
• 47:45
Speaker 2: my opinion editorializing great, great one. I'm one percent behind
• 47:49
Speaker 2: this idea. Hobby Kerchiville is back with another state of
• 47:53
Speaker 2: mind's interview Metro News Television. It will drop tonight at
• 47:56
Speaker 2: seven o'clock Cobby sitting down with Mountaineer quarterbacking legend Jeff Hosteler.
• 48:00
Speaker 2: State of Minds presented by Hope Gas Greer Industries, drops
• 48:03
Speaker 2: at seven o'clock tonight Metro News Television. Also available on
• 48:06
Speaker 2: all of your devices including Roku, LG, Smart TVs, Fire TV,
• 48:09
Speaker 2: and Samsung Smart TVs. And the Goats, the greatest of
• 48:13
Speaker 2: all Time, will join us for the show I'm introduced
• 48:18
Speaker 2: Midday Today, Texas. Can we consider having this is more
• 48:21
Speaker 2: than there's a sports complex? How about considering making it
• 48:24
Speaker 2: more like a family entertainment venue. Include things you wouldn't
• 48:27
Speaker 2: normally think of, like a bowling nowvey movie theater, roller
• 48:30
Speaker 2: rink arcade, things like that. Look, I would have no
• 48:33
Speaker 2: issue with that as long as they bring money in
• 48:35
Speaker 2: Tech says, didn't the public vote on the aquatic center,
• 48:38
Speaker 2: Not that I'm aware of, Texas, I'm not one hundred
• 48:41
Speaker 2: percent sure, but the facility used as comparison to Bridgeport
• 48:44
Speaker 2: is not free. Also the YMCA and Charles. The YMCA
• 48:49
Speaker 2: in Clarksburg Sands vacant now food for thought and or investigation,
• 48:54
Speaker 2: tex says. Cities with the most swimming pools for one
• 48:56
Speaker 2: hundred thousand residents of the US twenty twenty four, published
• 48:59
Speaker 2: by Statistics the Research Department. City with the largest number
• 49:03
Speaker 2: of public swimming pools per one hundred thousand residents Cleveland. Okay,
• 49:08
Speaker 2: let's go to the capitol. Let's check in with Wilson
• 49:10
Speaker 2: and Meadows and see what's going on there. Good morning, fellows,
• 49:14
Speaker 2: morning sir, how's it going. It's going a beautiful Sorry
• 49:22
Speaker 2: you guys had to hear me editorializing there. But yeah,
• 49:26
Speaker 2: that's what I did. I just heard get off my
• 49:29
Speaker 2: law exactly what I saw.
• 49:31
  Speaker 9: What I heard.
• 49:32
Speaker 2: Now, I said, now this time it would be get
• 49:33
Speaker 2: off my lawn, you old people. That's what I was saying.
• 49:36
Speaker 2: It was exactly the first time. Well, it just it
• 49:39
Speaker 2: just bothers me, you know, I mean, we got we
• 49:41
Speaker 2: got where we're We got a great opportunity with the
• 49:43
Speaker 2: sports complex in downtown Charleston for not only Charleston, but
• 49:46
Speaker 2: all the surrounding areas. And all I'm reading online last night,
• 49:49
Speaker 2: and it's everybody's right to give their opinion, all I'm
• 49:51
Speaker 2: reading online is people crapping all over it and saying
• 49:54
Speaker 2: it's election year stuff. This thing was proposed in twenty
• 49:56
Speaker 2: twenty one. That's when this conversation started, and people certainly
• 50:00
Speaker 2: have a right to weigh in on it. But when
• 50:01
Speaker 2: you've never lifted a finger to do anything, you never
• 50:04
Speaker 2: attended to send city council meeting or county commission meeting
• 50:07
Speaker 2: or whatever, and you just want to sit back and bitch,
• 50:09
  Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I got a problem with that. Well you're
• 50:13
Speaker 2: not wrong, Yeah, okay.
• 50:14
Speaker 14: If you're willing to complain, you should be willing to
• 50:18
Speaker 14: be chair of the committee to fix it.
• 50:20
Speaker 2: That's the way life works. And when people say the
• 50:22
Speaker 2: city or the county needs to put in whatever, that's
• 50:26
Speaker 2: this is entrepreneurship. It's National Entrepreneurship Week. Businesses do this.
• 50:31
Speaker 2: The city can't save the town center. They can negotiate,
• 50:33
Speaker 2: they can't put stores in a town center that's not
• 50:35
Speaker 2: what cities do you put a store in a town
• 50:38
Speaker 2: center or whatever the case may be. I'm done what
• 50:40
Speaker 2: you guys got no, I just sit back, listen to you,
• 50:46
  Speaker 2: all right?
• 50:46
  Speaker 1: You wound up.
• 50:47
Speaker 14: You wound up as the Hope Scholarships who are perturbed?
• 50:51
  Speaker 2: All right?
• 50:51

• 50:55
Speaker 14: would make some changes to the Hope Scholarship, put some
• 50:58
Speaker 14: restrictions in or at rails, depending on how you're looking
• 51:01
Speaker 14: at it. Marty Gerhart's going to explain that bill to us.
• 51:03
Speaker 14: We'll get the thoughts from Delegate John Williams. Also, the
• 51:06
Speaker 14: state Treasurer Larry Pack released a statement yesterday. Of course,

Speaker 14: his office administers of the Hope Scholarship. So we'll get
• 51:12
Speaker 14: all of those perspectives this morning, as well as talk
