- 1:17master your choices before they master you.
- 1:21I have a fresh glass of delicious orange
- 1:24juice here, squeezed, so I'll be having that
- 1:26tonight in between the breaths of the show.
- 1:29And the granular is how to make better
- 1:33decisions faster.
- 1:35Series 5, Show 31, episode number three, welcome,
- 1:39everyone, to the ever-popular Inspirations for Your
- 1:42Life show.
- 1:43I am John C.
- 1:45Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:49podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at
- 1:53Montclair State University, passionate lifelong learner, and grateful
- 1:56now to be a published author of Drained
- 1:59to Driven.
- 2:00Life is filled with decisions.
- 2:02Some are small, while others can change the
- 2:04direction of your life and the future.
- 2:07The difference between feeling stuck and moving forward
- 2:10often comes down to how you make decisions.
- 2:13Today, I'm going to explore 30 practical principles
- 2:15that will help you think more clearly, decide
- 2:18more confidently, and keep making progress without getting
- 2:21trapped by doubt or overthinking it.
- 2:25Number one, clarity creates confidence.
- 2:28When your goals are clear, your decisions become
- 2:30easier.
- 2:32Uncertainty often comes from not knowing what truly
- 2:35matters.
- 2:35Let me get a sip of this orange
- 2:36juice.
- 2:38Delicious, nice and cold and fresh.
- 2:41Number two, avoid overthinking it.
- 2:44Just avoid it.
- 2:45Thinking is valuable, but endless analysis paralysis is
- 2:49no good.
- 2:50It often causes delays rather than progress.
- 2:52Gather what you need, then move forward, guys.
- 2:55Gather the right information, number three.
- 2:58Better information leads to better decisions.
- 3:00Learn enough to make an informed choice without
- 3:03becoming overwhelmed.
- 3:05I think sometimes people, they want to do
- 3:08the research, but then they do so much
- 3:09research that they put themselves into this corner
- 3:12and they're like, I don't know what I'm
- 3:14supposed to do.
- 3:15I have no idea what I'm supposed to
- 3:16do.
- 3:17I think that's a huge problem for a
- 3:20lot of people.
- 3:23Number four, focus on what matters.
- 3:26What moves the needle?
- 3:28Not every detail deserves equal attention.
- 3:33Concentrate on the factors that will have the
- 3:36greatest impact.
- 3:38Number five, trust preparation.
- 3:41Preparation reduces uncertainty.
- 3:42The more prepared you are, the more confidently
- 3:44you'll make decisions.
- 3:47Number six, don't chase perfection.
- 3:50Waiting for the perfect answer often means missing
- 3:54good opportunities.
- 3:57Progress almost always beats perfection.
- 3:59I know when I was younger, I always
- 4:00wanted to chase perfection, but perfection done is
- 4:04better than perfect, I like to say.
- 4:06Because if something's done, you can always make
- 4:08it better, right?
- 4:09But if you're just constantly trying to make
- 4:11something perfect and it doesn't go anywhere, it's
- 4:13like you're in this endless loop and you
- 4:16can't get out of it.
- 4:16I think that becomes a problem for a
- 4:19lot of people out there today.
- 4:20Again, they chase perfection, maybe not because they
- 4:24want to, but because they feel they have
- 4:26to chase it, all right?
- 4:28And I know a lot of you out
- 4:30there want perfection, I get it, we all
- 4:32want things to be great, but striving for
- 4:34perfection right away can cause analysis paralysis.
- 4:39And that's just a fancy way of saying
- 4:42basically delayed execution or procrastination.
- 4:48And so when you overanalyze things too much,
- 4:51you have a tendency to not start, you
- 4:53have a tendency to not do anything.
- 4:55You just keep questioning, well, is this the
- 4:57right thing?
- 4:57Is this the wrong thing?
- 4:58I think that becomes a problem for, again,
- 5:01a lot of people.
- 5:03So that's a big problem that a lot
- 5:07of people don't seem to understand, right?
- 5:10They don't understand that.
- 5:11Number seven, guys, please learn to prioritize.
- 5:15Determine what deserves your attention first.
- 5:19In other words, what moves your needle?
- 5:22Clear priorities make difficult decisions much simpler.
- 5:26I think when we understand that, we can
- 5:29move forward in a better spirit to help
- 5:32ourselves and to help others.
- 5:34Number eight, eliminate unnecessary options.
- 5:37Too many choices often create confusion.
- 5:40Narrow your options and focus on what truly
- 5:42fits your goals.
- 5:43Now, I want to share something.
- 5:44I was having a one-on-one with
- 5:46somebody.
- 5:47And to keep things confidential, I don't give
- 5:49you the name or the location.
- 5:50So I was having this one-on-one
- 5:51today.
- 5:53And we were just having some conversation back
- 5:55and forth.
- 5:57And after a while, we weren't really getting
- 5:58anywhere, which is OK with me.
- 6:00I was just getting to know the person
- 6:01they were getting to know me.
- 6:02But they were getting a little frustrated.
- 6:03So they said to me, so what's the
- 6:06agenda here?
- 6:07John, what's the agenda here?
- 6:09And I kind of sat back in my
- 6:10chair.
- 6:10And I'm like, oh, there is no agenda.
- 6:13It's just to get to know you and
- 6:15for you to get to know me.
- 6:16And that's it.
- 6:17There's no real anything.
- 6:19They were putting on their sales cap and
- 6:22trying to push.
- 6:23Even though it was quiet pushing, it still
- 6:26felt really strong in the pushing.
- 6:29They weren't happy with just knowing.
- 6:32They were operating from a playbook.
- 6:35Number nine, experience wisdom.
- 6:39Because experience you have will build the wisdom.
- 6:42Every decision teaches something valuable.
- 6:45Over time, experience helps you recognize better opportunities.
- 6:48And maybe you don't see that tonight.
- 6:50Maybe you won't see that tomorrow.
- 6:51But you will eventually see it.
- 6:53I think that's the thing that a lot
- 6:54of people get a little bit psyched about.
- 6:58They don't realize how it's happening.
- 7:00But it can make a truly big impression.
- 7:02Number 10, guys, please stay objective.
- 7:05Separate emotions from facts.
- 7:07Whenever they're possible, objective thinking leads to stronger
- 7:12decisions.
- 7:14Now, that's not just me saying it.
- 7:16That's science that is backing that, right?
- 7:18Science is backing it.
- 7:20And I think that's an important piece when
- 7:22we can understand that.
- 7:25I think sometimes people just don't know what's
- 7:30going on.
- 7:31But I think a lot of times people
- 7:32realize that there's more to it.
- 7:37And that's a piece that a lot of
- 7:39people miss.
- 7:41They think that if they don't understand something,
- 7:47that it must not be good.
- 7:48Or that it may not be for them.
- 7:50So that's not a good way to determine
- 7:52if it's the right fit.
- 7:54Just because you don't know something doesn't mean
- 7:56it's not a good fit.
- 7:58Number 11, think strategically.
- 8:02Consider how today's decision affects tomorrow.
- 8:06Long-term thinking creates long-term success.
- 8:09Number 12, balance logic with intuition.
- 8:13Use facts to guide your thinking while allowing
- 8:16experience and good judgment to support your decision.
- 8:20Number 13, evaluate the risks.
- 8:23Every opportunity has potential, rewards, and possible challenges.
- 8:28But that doesn't mean we shouldn't push forward.
- 8:31Consider both before you're moving forward.
- 8:33Number 14, learn from the mistakes.
- 8:36Mistakes become valuable when you study them instead
- 8:39of repeating them.
- 8:40Remember, like today, it was all about data,
- 8:43right?
- 8:44Data, even though it might have not went
- 8:46the way I wanted, I gained precious data.
- 8:49Every lesson strengthens your judgment.
- 8:52And if you think that you're gonna just
- 8:54walk into every situation and know it, I
- 8:56got news for you.
- 8:57You're gonna be rudely awakened that that's not
- 9:01how it works.
- 9:02And so, if you appreciate the fact that
- 9:05you can gather data and know that not
- 9:07every experience is about advancing forward.
- 9:10It's about gathering data.
- 9:11So today, I gathered data.
- 9:13Now something else new that I started doing
- 9:15for you guys, just for you guys.
- 9:18About twice a week now, usually Monday and
- 9:22probably Wednesday or Thursday.
- 9:24I do a day in the life with
- 9:25John.
- 9:26And so today is the first day I'm
- 9:28gonna be publishing it.
- 9:29It will actually be put up on YouTube.
- 9:35I don't think I'm gonna put it as
- 9:37a broadcast.
- 9:39I'm still thinking about that.
- 9:42I might replay it as a broadcast, but
- 9:46I don't know.
- 9:47I have to think about that.
- 9:48Maybe I'll put it as a broadcast later
- 9:50on.
- 9:50That might be a good idea, right?
- 9:52Put it out as a broadcast, put it
- 9:53on all the channels, let people watch it.
- 9:56So it's gonna be a day in the
- 9:57life of John.
- 9:57So it's gonna be part of JC Academy.
- 10:00And I think the thing that's interesting about
- 10:03that is I'm gonna be sharing kind of
- 10:05what my day's like, what goes on behind
- 10:08the scenes.
- 10:08Not every little nitty gritty detail, but I'm
- 10:11gonna be sharing a lot of things.
- 10:12I won't be sharing personal things, but I'll
- 10:14be sharing the stuff that you guys don't
- 10:16see, hopefully you can appreciate what goes into
- 10:18a lot of things.
- 10:20Number 15, please stay decisive.
- 10:22Once you've gathered the information you need, make
- 10:25your decision with confidence and commit to it.
- 10:29I didn't say commit to it once, I
- 10:30said commit to it.
- 10:31So make that life commitment.
- 10:33I think that's a very important thing for
- 10:35us to all understand.
- 10:38And when we learn how to commit to
- 10:40something, it's like we're passionate, right, and we
- 10:46keep going and going.
- 10:48We go for that finish line, and the
- 10:50finish line keeps moving for us.
- 10:52We keep moving our boundary, which is great.
- 10:54We keep extending.
- 10:55We keep pushing our comfort zone just a
- 10:58little bit further than it was before, because,
- 11:00you know, success doesn't happen, guys, from us
- 11:03just staying comfortable.
- 11:06Sorry, it doesn't.
- 11:07Number 16, please keep learning.
- 11:09Every decision expands your experience.
- 11:11The more you learn, the more confidence you'll
- 11:13have when facing future choices.
- 11:17Number 17, build confidence, guys.
- 11:20Confidence doesn't come from always being right.
- 11:23Nope.
- 11:27It comes from knowing you can learn, adapt,
- 11:30and keep moving forward.
- 11:32That's one of the hardest things for people
- 11:34to understand.
- 11:35How do you move forward when people can't
- 11:38do things, right?
- 11:39I think that becomes a big problem for
- 11:42a lot of people.
- 11:44And, you know, when we think about moving
- 11:47forward and we try to move forward, a
- 11:51lot of people say, gee, this isn't working.
- 11:52So they try to do one or two
- 11:53things.
- 11:54They give up.
- 11:54Some people try to retool and go back
- 11:56to the drawing board.
- 11:57Other people just say, oh, it's not working.
- 11:59So I'm just going to fake it and
- 12:01make people think it's working.
- 12:02That's bad.
- 12:03I know a lot of people doing that
- 12:04when it comes to artificial intelligence.
- 12:06They don't have a clue, but yet they
- 12:09make it sound like they're an expert.
- 12:11And they're not.
- 12:13Number 18, guys, please stay accountable.
- 12:17I can't stress this more than anything.
- 12:20Take ownership of your decisions and their outcomes.
- 12:25See, accountability helps you grow faster than making
- 12:27excuses ever will.
- 12:30But making excuses is a way to get
- 12:32out of the situation and feel comfortable.
- 12:36Comfortable.
- 12:37I think that's a very important thing.
- 12:40If we can feel comfortable, then I guess
- 12:43we can move forward.
- 12:45But I want to tell you that that's
- 12:47not enough.
- 12:48We got to feel uncomfortable.
- 12:50See, when something is a little bit challenging
- 12:52for us, our brain's like, OK, this isn't
- 12:54working.
- 12:55I've got to now kick into high gear,
- 12:58kind of like, you know, with your car,
- 12:59right?
- 13:00If it can't get up the hill, it
- 13:00has to kick into higher gear, whether it's
- 13:02in a manual car or automatic car.
- 13:04It has to do something different, something it
- 13:06doesn't do all the time.
- 13:07And when that happens, it creates more of
- 13:09a moment with us, which raises our dopamine
- 13:13and adrenaline.
- 13:13I think that's a very powerful thing for
- 13:16all of us to understand.
- 13:18Number 19, please, please, please trust your values.
- 13:22Your values provide direction when decisions become difficult.
- 13:26Let your principles guide your choices, not temporary
- 13:29emotions.
- 13:30Improve your judgment.
- 13:32Number 20, good judgment.
- 13:35Well, need some more orange juice is what
- 13:36it means.
- 13:38Really good.
- 13:39Good judgment develops through observation, reflection, and experience.
- 13:45Every thoughtful decision strengthens your ability to make
- 13:48the next one happen.
- 13:54Pretty neat, right?
- 13:58When we get comfortable with a situation that
- 14:03we once found difficult, it means we've got
- 14:06to lift the bar.
- 14:08We've got to raise that bar more, right?
- 14:10We've gotten too comfortable.
- 14:11We have to keep getting a little uncomfortable,
- 14:13not painful, just a little uncomfortable so we
- 14:15can keep growing.
- 14:16Otherwise, we're never going to grow anymore.
- 14:19Number 21, please avoid emotional decisions.
- 14:22A lot of people hire and fire based
- 14:24on emotions, and that's not professional.
- 14:26And it's not ethical either, right?
- 14:30Strong emotions can cloud clear thinking.
- 14:33Give yourself time to respond thoughtfully instead of
- 14:36reacting impulsively.
- 14:37So that's about being proactive instead of reactive.
- 14:41When we're proactive, we make decisions based on
- 14:44the data or data that we're gathering, right?
- 14:48And so when something's not going well, what
- 14:50I say to myself is, okay, not that
- 14:51it didn't go well, I say, okay, I
- 14:53gathered valuable data that's going to help me
- 14:56make better decisions in my life.
- 14:58That's really cool, all right, when you can
- 15:00do that.
- 15:01Number 22, think beyond today.
- 15:06That's very keen too, right?
- 15:09So consider how today's decision will affect next
- 15:14week, next year, and your long term goals.
- 15:18A broader perspective often leads to better choices.
- 15:21Now, I say this to you because when
- 15:23you learn how to build a solid framework,
- 15:28you have a great foundation.
- 15:30And no matter what you put on it,
- 15:32it's going to be rock solid.
- 15:35That's a key, guys.
- 15:36A lot of people want to build that
- 15:38skyscraper, but they don't necessarily want to build
- 15:40the right things.
- 15:41I'll give you an example.
- 15:41When we were building our house down the
- 15:43shore, rebuilding it, you could have built with
- 15:45brick, okay, just a brick foundation.
- 15:48You could have done spread footings, or you
- 15:50could have done pilings.
- 15:52Well, we decided to do pilings because we
- 15:54were on the water level there right by
- 15:56the bay.
- 15:58And a regular, let's say, concrete or cement
- 16:01foundation isn't going to hold very well.
- 16:03Spread footings, as the land kind of erodes,
- 16:07well, the foundation's going to be wobbly and
- 16:09it's going to collapse.
- 16:11With pilings, they're driven deep, and either the
- 16:15house can sit on some of it, and
- 16:17some parts, it can be built around it,
- 16:19so it has a strong structure.
- 16:21What I see a need for success, structure
- 16:24and consistency, important.
- 16:27Number 23, solve problems quickly.
- 16:31Don't allow small problems to become larger ones.
- 16:35Address challenges early while they're still manageable.
- 16:39Number 24, focus on progress.
- 16:41You don't need perfect decisions every time.
- 16:44Consistent progress creates better results than waiting for
- 16:48certainty, okay?
- 16:51Certainty is good, but sometimes we have to
- 16:54move forward without certainty, and we have to
- 16:58navigate the waters.
- 17:00Which, and sometimes I know, be hard for
- 17:03people, because we don't know if we're going
- 17:04to get rejection.
- 17:06We don't know if it's going to work
- 17:07out, right?
- 17:10Like today, I was there, and I was
- 17:11uncertain how today was going to go.
- 17:13I wasn't sure.
- 17:15Number 25, stay adaptable.
- 17:18New information may require a different approach.
- 17:20Stay flexible without losing sight of your destination.
- 17:24Never lose sight of your destination.
- 17:26I think that's a big one that I
- 17:28want to share with you.
- 17:28If you keep having your vision in mind,
- 17:31even if it's not there, you're going to
- 17:33keep working toward it.
- 17:35I think that's probably one of the biggest
- 17:36things I can say to you.
- 17:37You're going to keep working toward it, and
- 17:39as you work toward it, you're going to
- 17:41build more momentum, and guess what you're going
- 17:42to build?
- 17:43You're going to build more confidence.
- 17:47But again, confidence doesn't happen at the flip
- 17:51of a switch, at the blink of an
- 17:53eye.
- 17:54So, people get impatient when confidence isn't there,
- 17:57because they're expecting it to just work.
- 18:01It doesn't just work.
- 18:02It's not like a light you turn on,
- 18:04and it's there.
- 18:06Confidence builds over time, and the more that
- 18:10you can build, guess what?
- 18:12The easier it becomes down the road.
- 18:15I think that's a very important thing for
- 18:19us to understand.
- 18:20It's a very, very important thing for us
- 18:23to understand, all right?
- 18:24So, let's think about this for just a
- 18:27moment, all right?
- 18:28We have a destination.
- 18:30We want to get somewhere, but we're in
- 18:32the middle of something right now.
- 18:33We don't know what to do.
- 18:34So, we don't stop.
- 18:37We can go forward, and we can be
- 18:40aware of our situation, not scared, but aware
- 18:43so that if we have to change our
- 18:45course, or we have to adapt on the
- 18:47fly, right, we can do it easily.
- 18:49I think that's a very important thing for
- 18:53us to understand.
- 18:55We want to be aware of our surroundings,
- 18:57so if we have to change something, we
- 18:59can change it, right?
- 19:01Those are very, very important things for us
- 19:05to understand, all right?
- 19:07Very, very understanding things.
- 19:08That's what we have to know, and it's
- 19:13something that a lot of people don't appreciate,
- 19:16okay, right?
- 19:19And people sometimes just jump to something that's
- 19:25easy.
- 19:31I think that's an important thing for us
- 19:33to be aware of when we can understand
- 19:37that, okay?
- 19:38Awareness helps us make the changes in our
- 19:42lives, all right?
- 19:45Helps us make the changes in our lives.
- 19:47Number 26, guys, better choices create better results.
- 19:53Your results are often a reflection of your
- 19:55decisions.
- 19:56Improve your choices, and your outcomes will begin
- 19:59improving as well.
- 20:01So that's a pretty solid approach, but a
- 20:04lot of people don't think that way because
- 20:06they think that they've got to rush through
- 20:08everything, and that can be a big problem
- 20:13for people because they're like, oh, my gosh,
- 20:14what am I supposed to do now?
- 20:15Let's not panic, right?
- 20:18Number 27, please keep moving forward.
- 20:20Avoid becoming stuck because of one imperfect decision
- 20:23or one little, let's say, mishaps or thing
- 20:26that didn't go right.
- 20:27Learn, adjust, and continue making progress.
- 20:31Number 28, learn from every outcome.
- 20:34Every result provides valuable feedback, data.
- 20:38Success builds confidence while setbacks build wisdom if
- 20:42you're willing to learn.
- 20:43Today, did my one-on-one go as
- 20:45well as it could have?
- 20:47No.
- 20:48Was it a total failure?
- 20:50No.
- 20:51Did I learn some things?
- 20:52Yes.
- 20:53Did I potentially get a new restaurant to
- 20:55maybe invite us as a host to do
- 20:59a show there?
- 20:59Possibly.
- 21:00And I had a good sandwich today, so
- 21:03that was good.
- 21:04And I think when we understand these things,
- 21:07and we realize that even though we're coming
- 21:09there for one thing, just because that thing
- 21:11didn't work out doesn't mean that the whole
- 21:13thing is a loss.
- 21:14I think that's probably a very, very big
- 21:17thing that many people don't understand.
- 21:20They just don't understand it, so they just
- 21:23kind of go at all fours, right?
- 21:25And they're like, I just got to approach
- 21:27it, right?
- 21:28But that might not be the right solution.
- 21:31It might not be the right approach.
- 21:33Number 29, please build decision-making habits.
- 21:37The more often you practice making thoughtful decisions,
- 21:41the more natural they become.
- 21:44You see, wise decisions become a habit through
- 21:47repetition, through repetition.
- 21:52And repetition is the mother of all skill.
- 21:54We've learned this before.
- 21:55This is no secret to us.
- 21:58But I want to tell you that people
- 22:00that rush this are unhappy, and I'll tell
- 22:03you why they're unhappy.
- 22:04They rush through something, and they don't necessarily
- 22:07know why.
- 22:08All they know is they want to get
- 22:09to the finish line.
- 22:10They want to get to the next point
- 22:12in their life to rush, but they didn't
- 22:14enjoy the moment.
- 22:17You know, sometimes when my life moves fast,
- 22:19because that can happen, I was, you know,
- 22:20just, dear Lord, I was like, please give
- 22:22me the strength.
- 22:24Please give me the awareness so that I
- 22:27can enjoy my day in a slow day
- 22:30in a meaningful way for the greater good
- 22:33of all concerned.
- 22:34That's pretty powerful.
- 22:35Number 30, guys, great decisions shape great lives.
- 22:40Extraordinary lives are built through thousands of thoughtful
- 22:43choices made with purpose.
- 22:44I didn't say one, discipline and consistency.
- 22:47So thousands, not one choice.
- 22:50So where you are right now, like this
- 22:52juice I'm having, this all happened because of
- 22:55choices I made before the show.
- 22:59And you've got to have structure, and you've
- 23:00got to have consistency.
- 23:01That's no secret.
- 23:03But yet people don't do it because they
- 23:04think they can cut corners.
- 23:06They think it's okay to cut corners.
- 23:10Squares are good sometimes.
- 23:11We need squares.
- 23:12We can't always have cut off corners and
- 23:16not squares, right?
- 23:17We need squares.
- 23:19Every wise decision becomes another investment in your
- 23:22future.
- 23:23And I think that's something many people here
- 23:25don't understand.
- 23:26And I don't think it's that they can't
- 23:29understand.
- 23:29I think it's just a mental change with
- 23:31them.
- 23:33I think it's a change for them to
- 23:37realize that it's about something else, all right?
- 23:43That's important for us to know.
- 23:45And as we know that, then maybe we'll
- 23:50be able to approach things just a little
- 23:53bit differently, just a little bit differently.
- 23:56Not a lot differently, just a little bit
- 23:58differently.
- 23:58And that awareness that we gather is able
- 24:02to take what we've worked on and then
- 24:05the data we've worked.
- 24:06Unlike today's meeting I had, I was just
- 24:09taking it all in.
- 24:10And I was trying to give the other
- 24:11person opportunity, but I could see they kept
- 24:14going to sales mode on me.
- 24:16And I wasn't nasty, but I said, you
- 24:20know, I kept throwing it back.
- 24:21How did you get involved with this?
- 24:23And there was no point in time that
- 24:24I was trying to sell them anything, just
- 24:26sharing what I did.
- 24:27But they were, within five or 10 minutes,
- 24:31they were very agitated.
- 24:33What's the agenda here?
- 24:35There is no agenda.
- 24:37So now what I do my one-on
- 24:37-ones, I just let them know to get
- 24:39together, to get to know you and you
- 24:42get to know me.
- 24:44In closing, guys, making better decisions isn't about
- 24:47being perfect.
- 24:48Let's just get that on the table now.
- 24:50It's about becoming intentional.
- 24:53Every choice gives you an opportunity to learn,
- 24:55to improve, and move one step closer to
- 24:58the future you want.
- 25:00Don't ever let false evidence appearing real, fear,
- 25:03overthinking, or uncertainty keep you from taking action.
- 25:08Don't.
- 25:09It'll rob you of beauty.
- 25:12What we need to do instead, ladies and
- 25:14gentlemen, is we have to learn, not easy,
- 25:17to trust your preparation that you've had.
- 25:20To stay true to your own core values.
- 25:25And remember that wisdom grows through experience.
- 25:30Through experience.
- 25:32That's powerful, guys.

- 26:57learning.
- 26:59And remember, every great life is built one
- 27:04thoughtful decision at a time.
- 27:06I didn't say 100.
- 27:07I didn't say 1,000.
- 27:08We might need to get through 1,000
- 27:09or hundreds.
- 27:10But it's all made one decision at a
- 27:13time.
