- 0:01Speaker 1: This is parent Data. I'm Emily Ostrom.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Chelsea Snaro. Hey, I need your help,
- 0:24Speaker 2: give me a hold back and get a chance. Thanks Monny.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Hi Chelsea.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Hey Emily. How's it going.
- 0:42Speaker 3: It's good, okay, So welcome to parent Data podcast.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I would love if you could introduce yourself because I
- 0:49Speaker 1: know you, but listeners do not, maybe or maybe they do.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Sure. Yeah, my name is Chelsea Snaro and I'm a
- 0:56Speaker 2: professional tra athlete. My claim to fame is winning the
- 1:00Speaker 2: iron Man World Championships when my daughter was a year
- 1:04Speaker 2: and a half old, and yeah, I was a kind
- 1:08Speaker 2: of brand new mom just surviving and did this crazy thing.
- 1:13Speaker 3: No, just like we're all surviving, just for the people
- 1:15Speaker 3: who aren't really aware.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Could you maybe say what you do in the What
- 1:20Speaker 1: does the iron Man involve?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's this ridiculous event where we swim three point
- 1:27Speaker 2: eight kilometers, then we bike one hundred and twelve miles,
- 1:30Speaker 2: and then we run a marathon. And at the World
- 1:33Speaker 2: Championships it's usually in Kona, Hawaii, so super hot, human
- 1:38Speaker 2: volcanic environment, and your.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Best event in this is the marathon, right.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yes, I come from my running background. I ran competitively
- 1:50Speaker 2: in college and post collegiately, and then I found triathlon
- 1:54Speaker 2: in my late twenties and have had this kind of
- 1:56Speaker 2: second go at a pro career. But I really was
- 2:00Speaker 2: starting to find my groove in triathlon around twenty nineteen
- 2:04Speaker 2: twenty twenty, and when I realized we were in think
- 2:07Speaker 2: of a pandemic and I wasn't going to get to
- 2:09Speaker 2: race for a while, I decided to choose motherhood and
- 2:14Speaker 2: get pregnant, to have a baby, and then see what
- 2:16Speaker 2: I could do when returning to sport.
- 2:19Speaker 1: What okay, So tell us a little bit about your family,
- 2:21Speaker 1: your family set up.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You have one kid, Sky, right.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I have one kid, yea s guy. She is three.
- 2:29Speaker 2: She is a spicy little lady, but yeah, having a
- 2:33Speaker 2: lot of fun with her. My husband is a trained firefighter,
- 2:37Speaker 2: but he actually left his job last year to be
- 2:41Speaker 2: a stay at home dad and support me in my career.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So we travel all around the world as a little
- 2:49Speaker 2: family of three, going from like training camp, trading camp,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and race to race. And you know, we're quite transient,
- 2:57Speaker 2: but it's a fun journey.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Is is Sky a good traveler? I mean, I guess
- 3:03Speaker 3: she sort of must be.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Yeah, she's super adaptable. I guess she started going to
- 3:07Speaker 2: training camp. She went to her first training camp with
- 3:09Speaker 2: me when she was three months old. I raced a
- 3:14Speaker 2: half hired man when I was four months postpartum.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Cool, I know me too.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, it's so ridiculous. Also, yeah, it's so interesting.
- 3:25Speaker 2: You know. I kind of was very public about my
- 3:28Speaker 2: return to racing goals when I was pregnant, and I
- 3:31Speaker 2: look back, it's very well documented. Actually, there's this video
- 3:34Speaker 2: of me where I'm nine and a half months pregnant, right,
- 3:38Speaker 2: because pregnancy has ten months, not nine months. People. Anyway,
- 3:43Speaker 2: I am massive, waddling around my block walking my dog,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and I say, so, here's how it's gonna go. I'm
- 3:49Speaker 2: gonna pop out this baby around my due date, and
- 3:51Speaker 2: then I'm going to get back to training a couple
- 3:54Speaker 2: of weeks later after I recover, and I'm gonna race
- 3:56Speaker 2: and it's all gonna be great. And I would have
- 4:00Speaker 2: went that way, but it was a challenge for sure.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So let let me ask you, what is your late
- 4:09Speaker 1: night panic Google?
- 4:10Speaker 3: Right now?
- 4:12Speaker 2: My late night panic Google right now?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, or ever you gave me any late night Chelsea.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Well, I was thinking about this, Emily, because I had
- 4:21Speaker 2: this like ridiculous late night panic Google that started during
- 4:25Speaker 2: my pregnancy and then persisted probably during the first year
- 4:29Speaker 2: of Sky's life. Okay, so you didn't get any ridiculous,
- 4:34Speaker 2: Well I did, but I didn't. I didn't. I was
- 4:37Speaker 2: obsessed with baby wipes. I don't know why, like I
- 4:41Speaker 2: got fixated on this, but I sort of thought like
- 4:45Speaker 2: my choice and baby wipes was going to determine, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: her long term life success, like whether or not she
- 4:52Speaker 2: was gonna get get into Harvard or be like a
- 4:56Speaker 2: world class athlete or and whatever. You know. So I
- 5:03Speaker 2: did a lot of research on baby wipes.
- 5:06Speaker 3: What about So it's interesting.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Somebody sent me a panic Google email the other day
- 5:13Speaker 1: asking if chlorox wipes led to autism, and interesting, I
- 5:19Speaker 1: wasn't able to answer it because I couldn't even figure
- 5:21Speaker 1: out where they had gotten this from. You know, sometimes
- 5:24Speaker 1: it's like you can point to something and be like, oh,
- 5:26Speaker 1: that must be where it's from. But this was a
- 5:28Speaker 1: case where I just I have no idea what they're
- 5:30Speaker 1: talking about, and so I wasn't able to be to
- 5:32Speaker 1: be helpful.
- 5:33Speaker 3: But what what is the question you have?
- 5:36Speaker 2: What did you happen?
- 5:38Speaker 3: Babies?
- 5:39Speaker 2: The deal is I thought I was like so broad,
- 5:41Speaker 2: which was maybe part of my problem. But I cannot
- 5:43Speaker 2: tell you how many times I googled what are the
- 5:47Speaker 2: best baby wipes?
- 5:50Speaker 3: What is Google tell you about the best baby whips?
- 5:52Speaker 2: You know what? The the one that populates most is
- 5:54Speaker 2: the water wipes. And water wipes sound nice, right, because
- 5:58Speaker 2: it's like just water, and that's seems pretty clean and
- 6:01Speaker 2: basic and it should be fine. But the water wipes
- 6:03Speaker 2: are not just water. There's like all sorts of chemicals
- 6:06Speaker 2: in the water wipes, and they are not the most
- 6:08Speaker 2: natural wipes. And I like message several friends about like
- 6:13Speaker 2: what wipes they were using? What wipes were going to
- 6:16Speaker 2: be the best? Yeah, natural, safe choice for my kids, booty,
- 6:23Speaker 2: And I ultimately like had to make a decision, right
- 6:26Speaker 2: because this baby came and like we needed a wipe
- 6:29Speaker 2: or buy Yeah, But I never got like a conclusive
- 6:33Speaker 2: Maybe you could write this about this in your newsletter,
- 6:35Speaker 2: because I never got a conclusive answer on what would
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know lead to lifelong success for Sky based on
- 6:43Speaker 2: baby whites? Right?
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think it's it's a hard thing to write about
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the news ever, because I'm but I'll tell you
- 6:47Speaker 1: the answer now, which is it doesn't matter at all.
- 6:53Speaker 3: What kind of wipes you use, uh, for your for
- 6:57Speaker 3: your baby.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I mean that, yeah, yeah, in part because I guess
- 7:02Speaker 1: one thing you worry about is chemicals.
- 7:04Speaker 3: And you know this this.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Generally there are some kinds of chemical exposure that we could.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Worry about, but most of the ways that your kids.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Are exposed to chemicals are through like the environment and
- 7:16Speaker 1: water and other kinds of things, and not through baby wipes. Yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and beyond that, the only really bad thing that can
- 7:25Speaker 1: happen with baby wipes is diaper rash.
- 7:28Speaker 3: And as amocophore on that and then it's over.
- 7:31Speaker 2: It's so interesting when you're in this like really, uh,
- 7:37Speaker 2: I will ultimately write a very like sleep deprived state
- 7:40Speaker 2: where you're probably not thinking super rationally and small things
- 7:44Speaker 2: because totally you know, very big things. But for whatever reason,
- 7:48Speaker 2: like this was the area where I decided I could
- 7:51Speaker 2: gain some like control in the situation.
- 7:55Speaker 1: No, it's it is such a good It is such
- 7:58Speaker 1: a good example of one of these things that just
- 8:00Speaker 1: occupies the mind of you as a new parent and
- 8:02Speaker 1: when you look back, probably as a parent of a
- 8:04Speaker 1: three year old, certainly for me as a parent of
- 8:06Speaker 1: a thirteen year old when I look back at some
- 8:08Speaker 1: of the things that I obsessed about, Like should my
- 8:13Speaker 1: kid wear mittens? That was like a huge thing for
- 8:15Speaker 1: me because my mom told me that if she wore
- 8:18Speaker 1: mittens baby mittens, she would never learn to use her hands,
- 8:22Speaker 1: which like, is ridiculous.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Is ridiculous.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Of course, I'm like, look, I'm googling, like, what kind
- 8:27Speaker 1: of academic papers have been written about mittens? No, there's none.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Obviously this is an insane idea, but it is. This
- 8:34Speaker 1: just sort of so emblematic of the stuff that we
- 8:35Speaker 1: get obsessed with when our kids are little, and we
- 8:40Speaker 1: everything seems like scary and fraught and anxiety provoking.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, I I'm not like ready to have another kid.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think I don't know if I'll choose to have
- 8:55Speaker 2: another kid while I'm still competing, But I'm I'm definitely curious,
- 8:58Speaker 2: you know, like the second go around, you're a little
- 9:02Speaker 2: more rational. Yeah, if I'll be less.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Uh, Producer Tomorrow wants to know if you thought about
- 9:07Speaker 1: wipe warmers. Was wipe warmer's part of your concern?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Okay, you know what, It wasn't part of part of
- 9:13Speaker 2: my concern because very like early on in the process,
- 9:16Speaker 2: of kind of building a registry and like deciding on
- 9:20Speaker 2: the things we needed. We were warned not to get
- 9:23Speaker 2: a wipe warmer, okay, because it would totally ruin her.
- 9:27Speaker 1: It is the number I think the number one thing
- 9:30Speaker 1: when I surveyed people about baby things that you need
- 9:32Speaker 1: or don't need. I think it was the number one
- 9:34Speaker 1: thing that people said, don't get was it wipe warmer,
- 9:37Speaker 1: because they're like, it's it's a waste and they just
- 9:39Speaker 1: get used to it and then you can't wipe their butt.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah, gold Yeah, yeah, yeah. We were warned not not
- 9:46Speaker 2: you know, give her that creature comfort early on.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Totally. You gotta just like get them used to a
- 9:51Speaker 3: cold butt, just like from.
- 9:52Speaker 2: The retrospect, doesn't it feel like that would be a
- 9:55Speaker 2: nice thing to have?
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yes?
- 9:57Speaker 1: And of course, I mean, wouldn't you like like an
- 10:00Speaker 1: nice warm this is like Japanese toilets, you know, wouldn't
- 10:03Speaker 1: we all like a nice warm spray in our butt?
- 10:07Speaker 3: Yeah? I would like that. But now she's now and
- 10:10Speaker 3: now she presumed maybe she uses the bathroom.
- 10:13Speaker 2: On her own, and she does. She's crushing it. She's
- 10:16Speaker 2: like fond potty training. Yeah, it's so fun. She uh
- 10:23Speaker 2: does this really great thing where we have like a
- 10:27Speaker 2: lot of talk about like peeing and pooping now, but
- 10:30Speaker 2: she does this really great. I don't know if this
- 10:32Speaker 2: is normal. I should google this. She will like poop
- 10:35Speaker 2: and she'll look at her poops and she'll blow them
- 10:37Speaker 2: and kiss goodbye, and she'll say pie poopies, and it's
- 10:41Speaker 2: the whole thing. Yeah, it is.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It is quite normal for kids to feel a level
- 10:47Speaker 1: of attachment to their poop, which is different from adults.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And this is part of why kids sometimes have a
- 10:51Speaker 1: hard time pooping on the potty, because it feels like
- 10:55Speaker 1: you're like losing an arm when the poop falls.
- 10:57Speaker 3: You know, it's like a like an important body part.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Has been.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Does it make sense? Does it make too much sense?
- 11:08Speaker 2: I just yeah, I love it.
- 11:10Speaker 3: No, I love it. Goodbye, blow to kiss. It's so
- 11:14Speaker 3: so nice. It's so like generous and thoughtful.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know it's great. I'm I think I've learned.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I love my baby and I think she is, you know,
- 11:27Speaker 2: like God's gift to the universe. But I'm way more
- 11:30Speaker 2: into this like toddler three year old days than I
- 11:34Speaker 2: was into the newborn.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Are you going to get her into Traathon I hope not.
- 11:41Speaker 2: We need like a fund sport. Traathlon is a type
- 11:43Speaker 2: two sort of fun, you know, like the fun when
- 11:47Speaker 2: you're finished. Yeah, And I think it'd be cool if
- 11:49Speaker 2: she was into something that was fun while you're actually doing.
- 11:52Speaker 3: It, like soccer or badminton.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Maybe like tennis, okay, anything like that. But she's gonna
- 12:04Speaker 2: find she's gonna get into whatever she gets into, and
- 12:07Speaker 2: I'm not really that bothered.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Thank you, Chelsea, it was great to talk to you.
- 12:15Speaker 2: You too, have a great week.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Thank you you two MM
