- 1:14Hello and welcome to another episode of Bible Women and Bathrobes.
- 1:18I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:20Anderson, and joining me today is Jen Wright.
- 1:22Welcome back, Jen.
- 1:24Thanks, Tamara.
- 1:25I'm happy to be here and we are so happy to have you.
- 1:30And today, guys, we are continuing with that story leading up to the Nativity of Jesus Christ.
- 1:35We've covered the story of Elizabeth and Zacharias.
- 1:38We've covered the story of the angel appearing to Mary.
- 1:41And now we're in Luke chapter one.
- 1:44We're going to cover verses 39 through 45.
- 1:47This is Mary right after the angels appeared.
- 1:50And that's kind of where we pick up the story.
- 1:53And we talked last week, Jen, about how when the angel Gabriel came to Mary, the example he gave her of how the nothing is impossible with God was that her cousin Elizabeth was six months pregnant with a baby.
- 2:12Oh my gosh.
- 2:13Right.
- 2:14And this is a woman who has already gone through menopause.
- 2:16So she's older.
- 2:18I mean, I know how draining pregnancy is on was on me as a younger mom, but I, I can't even, I'm kind of perimenopausal right now.
- 2:28I can't even imagine like getting pregnant at this point in my life.
- 2:31Like I would be exhausted.
- 2:33I'd probably be in bed like most of the time.
- 2:35Right, right.
- 2:37Well, and I think it's so interesting because Mary, of course is this young girl.
- 2:41Right.
- 2:41She's probably somewhere in her mid teens is what we think.
- 2:45And she would have known Elizabeth her whole life as someone who was barren.
- 2:51And at the time the stakes of that were very high.
- 2:54And so it would have been something that she would have had compassion about or really kind of known about.
- 3:03And so this miracle for her would really change how Mary kind of would look at this, at this cousin, right at her friend.
- 3:12So I think it's really, it's amazing that they get to go through this experience of divinity together and that their roles can shift with each other.
- 3:21I think it's really cool.
- 3:23Yeah.
- 3:24And I think it's interesting we, we read last week, or maybe it's the week before, where Elizabeth, when she conceived it says she hid herself for five months.
- 3:37So, you know, here we are the next month.
- 3:41I don't know if word had started to spread yet or not.
- 3:44Obviously Mary hadn't heard.
- 3:47But the angel tells Mary, hey, your cousin's pregnant.
- 3:51Like what?
- 3:53You know, and, and it's interesting.
- 3:56That's kind of where we are when we pick up the story in verse 38, known verse 39, it says, and Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste.
- 4:07I love the wisp.
- 4:08Haste.
- 4:08She's like, holy cow, Elizabeth is pregnant.
- 4:11I better go help.
- 4:12Do you know what I mean?
- 4:13Yeah.
- 4:14And I'm sure there was a little bit of God's nudging there, you know, that she went with haste into the city of Judah.
- 4:24And having Elizabeth, you know, here she is.
- 4:28She has just gone through several months where she's kind of been secluded by herself.
- 4:32I can't believe this is finally happening to me.
- 4:35And that's where Mary comes into the story.
- 4:38You know, Elizabeth, obviously six months pregnant.
- 4:40You can't hide that anymore.
- 4:41You know what I mean?
- 4:42She's just been through the nausea phase.
- 4:46Her old bones are creaking.
- 4:48She's probably moving, you know, tired, so, so tired.
- 4:55And Mary has just had this miraculous event happen to her.
- 5:00You know, Tam, we're talking about the effects of that on Elizabeth.
- 5:04And I just have, I have so much compassion for her because in our fertility journey, right, those, that first part of pregnancy is exciting, but it's also really nerve wracking.
- 5:20Like we don't know Elizabeth's whole story.
- 5:22We just know that she wasn't able to have children.
- 5:24And waiting every month to find that out is so heartbreaking that she would have gone through that time and, and then having hit menopause, right.
- 5:38Like having been beyond that time, really thought that that matter was kind of at rest.
- 5:43So I think it's really interesting to think about her coming back to that.
- 5:47And man, I'm not sur that she was nervous for those first couple of months about whether this pregnancy would last or Just not knowing a totally new, like, re.
- 6:00Wrap your head around it moment.
- 6:02And I think it's.
- 6:04It's really cool that Mary's had this moment, too, and that they're gonna go with haste to each other, right?
- 6:10Like, she's gonna go and find her friend.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:13Yeah.
- 6:14It.
- 6:15It is so beautiful.
- 6:18And.
- 6:18And as you remember, Zacharias at this point, can't talk.
- 6:24So it's interesting that this whole conversation.
- 6:26We don't know if Zacharias was there when Mary and Elizabeth had the conversation.
- 6:30He couldn't have contributed, you know?
- 6:33No, but.
- 6:35But he could have been there.
- 6:37But we have now this whole conversation that happens between Mary and Elizabeth.
- 6:42And it is so beautiful what God does with these women.
- 6:48It says in verse 40.
- 6:50So Mary entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elizabeth.
- 6:55And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leapt within her, leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost, and she spake out with a loud voice and said,
- 7:08blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
- 7:14And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
- 7:18For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leapt in my womb.
- 7:24And blessed is she that believed, for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
- 7:31So amazing.
- 7:33So this beautiful, beautiful thing here, and I think it's really cool that the same salutation that Elizabeth uses is what the angel says when he greets her.
- 7:50Blessed art thou among women.
- 7:52You see it again?
- 7:53Elizabeth says it.
- 7:54Blessed art thou among women.
- 7:56Oh, talk about a second witness right there.
- 8:00Bam, bam.
- 8:01Any thoughts?
- 8:02I mean, there's a ton that we need to unpack in these verses here.
- 8:05Jen.
- 8:05I really love that second witness.
- 8:07I think often when we're moving forward in life, we take those first initial steps, right?
- 8:14And we can have a lot of energy.
- 8:16And I think the thing that keeps us going are those small second witnesses of being on the right track.
- 8:23And we do.
- 8:24We get that through prayer.
- 8:25We get that through continued relationship with the spirit, relationship with others.
- 8:29But as we go there, there are those milestones that we can expect and that we can be surprised by with God, where he says, this is it.
- 8:38You're doing it.
- 8:40And I.
- 8:40So I love the repetition and language.
- 8:42I really like that you brought that up.
- 8:43I think it's really, really cool.
- 8:46And I love that John Lepton in the womb, right?
- 8:49John's always gonna witness.
- 8:51He's gonna be that forerunner for Christ.
- 8:54And so I just love that, man.
- 8:58It started early.
- 8:59These.
- 9:00These cousins.
- 9:01It was very sweet.
- 9:02What do you think?
- 9:04Oh, my goodness.
- 9:05Well, I.
- 9:07I was also impressed.
- 9:08And it was interesting.
- 9:09If we kind of go back to.
- 9:14In Luke, same chapter, chapter one, verse 15, when the angel Gabriel talked to Zacharias, he said that John would be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
- 9:32And so I think this kind of ties in as well, that here he is still in his mother's womb and he is leaping for joy.
- 9:43Yeah.
- 9:44Mary shows up.
- 9:48Like you said, this is something.
- 9:49And.
- 9:50And I think it also shows us some.
- 9:52You know, we have the scientific question, you know, when does a soul enter the womb?
- 9:59We don't know, but obviously it's happened already in this case.
- 10:04Do you know what I mean?
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06Right, right.
- 10:09That's really sweet.
- 10:10The other phrase that kind of sticks out to me, and this is important one, when it talks about the babe leaps in her womb, but Elizabeth being filled with the Holy Ghost.
- 10:19And what I like about it is that it's this into Christ's life.
- 10:23Like, here's the beginning of his life, and the Holy Ghost is testifying to Elizabeth about who he is.
- 10:30Right.
- 10:31John leaps, but it's the Holy Ghost who tells and who inspires her with what.
- 10:37With who it is that Mary is carrying.
- 10:42And it's going to be again in the upper room that Christ is teaching his disciples that it's the Holy Ghost who will tell them who he is.
- 10:51So I like that it's this start, and it's going to be the end of Christ's life, too, that how we come to know him is through that testimony of that still small voice of that Holy Ghost and Holy
- 11:03Spirit.
- 11:03So I really love it.
- 11:06I just had a thought that was really cool as well, that it's interesting to me that these first witnesses of Jesus Christ that speak things verbally are women.
- 11:19Because Zacharias couldn't tell his story yet, you know, his mouth was shut.
- 11:28And so who is one of the first witnesses besides Mary?
- 11:31It is Elizabeth.
- 11:33Elizabeth.
- 11:34And then it's going to be Anna, and then it will be Simeon.
- 11:37Right.
- 11:37But it is.
- 11:38It is these women who testify of the Christ child's coming.
- 11:42And I think that's really.
- 11:43That's a really good point.
- 11:45I like it.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:46And so sometimes, I know I've heard a lot of women ask.
- 11:50And in fact, as I was starting this podcast, there were women who were saying, I would love to have you talk about women in the Scriptures, because often we feel marginalized because back in this day, you know, women
- 12:01just didn't speak up and speak out as much.
- 12:03There's so few witnesses of women compared to men in the Bible.
- 12:07And so I love that we see these witnesses of Jesus Christ being so key and so pivotal that it started with women.
- 12:19Well, and I love it, too, because Christ, of course, and telling his own lineage is going to go through women, right?
- 12:26He's going to talk about tomorrow.
- 12:28He's going to bring that forward.
- 12:30And I don't think it's an accident.
- 12:31Of course, at his time, it was a patriarchal society, and in some ways it is here now, too.
- 12:36But Christ saw the role of women in bringing about divine roles and purposes, and he still sees that now.
- 12:46And I just.
- 12:47I love that.
- 12:48I mean, we're going to come back to that later, in later verses.
- 12:53How women in Scripture influence each other.
- 12:55It's pretty cool.
- 12:56Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:59Oh, my goodness.
- 13:01I love how you also said she was filled with the Holy Ghost.
- 13:03And I think this is something we can look for in women and each other, that God will often fill us with the Holy Ghost.
- 13:15And when we speak with the power of the Holy Ghost, that amazing things can pop out of our mouths.
- 13:20I know that there's times, like when I've been.
- 13:23When I've had a friend come to me or even a child come to me, and they'll say, mom, here's what I'm dealing with, or my friend, here's what I'm challenged with.
- 13:32And, you know, in my brain, I'm thinking, I honestly have no idea what to say in this instance.
- 13:39And I'm praying, dear Lord, help me know what I shall.
- 13:44What I should say.
- 13:45Because I.
- 13:46I am speechless.
- 13:48I don't.
- 13:48I don't have the answer to what they're talking to me about.
- 13:52And then I sit back and I'm amazed sometimes at what comes out of my mouth.
- 13:58I'm just like, whoa, where did that come from?
- 14:01I don't even know.
- 14:02I like when you learn something, too, right?
- 14:05When you're like, yeah, thanks.
- 14:07Yeah.
- 14:07I'm like, wow, that was really smart.
- 14:09Where did that come from?
- 14:13I'm gonna write that down.
- 14:14Yeah.
- 14:17So I think.
- 14:17I think that's cool.
- 14:19It's a cool thing that we can kind of pull out of this, is that we can invite the Holy Spirit to be with us, to be the words coming out of our mouth in situations where we may not
- 14:32know what to say and then watch what happens.
- 14:35I mean, just stand back and be Amazed.
- 14:40You know, you saying that it does remind me, in verse 42 of her, of the way that it describes.
- 14:46Elizabeth is speaking out with a loud voice.
- 14:49I don't.
- 14:50I think we just sometimes can be hesitant to speak.
- 14:54And I like what you're saying.
- 14:57As far as relying on that Holy Ghost to fill in those gaps.
- 15:00Let's speak.
- 15:02Speak of your experience, speak what you've learned, and let's see how the Holy Ghost can work things together for good.
- 15:08Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 15:10Absolutely, yeah.
- 15:12Loud voice.
- 15:12I like that you brought that out.
- 15:15And then she repeats the words of the angel.
- 15:17Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
- 15:22How amazing that Elizabeth gets to testify her witness of Jesus Christ, you know, and she doesn't even see it.
- 15:33Like, Mary, you.
- 15:34At this point, Mary, you probably can't even see that she's pregnant.
- 15:37You know, she's got to be in the very, very beginning stages of a pregnancy.
- 15:43And.
- 15:44And yet Elizabeth knows, by the power of God, like a.
- 15:50Like, Mary doesn't even have to broach the subject.
- 15:52I'm sure she was traveling from.
- 15:55From Nazareth over to Judah to this, into a city of Judah.
- 16:01We don't know where, but she had.
- 16:03Imagine what she is thinking as she is taking that journey.
- 16:07How do I even bring this up to Elizabeth?
- 16:09Hi, I saw an angel.
- 16:11You know what?
- 16:13I'm pregnant.
- 16:14Like, this isn't gonna come.
- 16:15I know.
- 16:16Like, how do I bring this up?
- 16:18And it's like, God solves problem before she even has to bring it up?
- 16:24And.
- 16:25And so I was just thinking, how many times do I sit and fret and stew?
- 16:29Like, I've been prompted to stop by people's houses before.
- 16:32Like, tamara, you need to go visit so and so.
- 16:34And I'm just like, okay, what am I supposed to say?
- 16:40I don't know why I'm here.
- 16:41I'm here.
- 16:42God sent me.
- 16:43You know?
- 16:43I mean, and I love how she's probably thinking about that the whole time she's walking to visit Elizabeth, and yet God just takes care of it.
- 16:54You know, he's like.
- 16:56And the problem that you were fretting about and stewing about, problem solved, done.
- 17:02Yeah.
- 17:02She has her own witness.
- 17:04You don't have to try to explain it.
- 17:06She is.
- 17:07And now they get to be there for each other, right?
- 17:11Oh, it's so good.
- 17:14It's so good.
- 17:16It's so good.
- 17:18Oh, my goodness.
- 17:20Any other thoughts on those few little verses right there?
- 17:2343, 44.
- 17:25No.
- 17:25I do.
- 17:26I really love.
- 17:28Later in 44, like, Elizabeth is saying, Call.
- 17:34She's just recognizing this blessing from the Lord.
- 17:36Right.
- 17:37She's already been blessed.
- 17:38She.
- 17:40And she's witnessing that Mary is the mother of the Lord and how sweet that she gets to come to her.
- 17:46Right.
- 17:48I love at the end of 44, when she's describing how the Holy Ghost worked on her, but that the.
- 17:56Her feelings she describes as for joy and.
- 18:00Oh, my gosh, like, that she could reach through and access that joy in that moment is amazing.
- 18:08I think friendships do that.
- 18:10As far as offering us spaces to set down, maybe outside trouble and reach for joy.
- 18:18Certainly Mary's going to have a time ahead right there.
- 18:21The discussion about what Joseph is going to do with her.
- 18:24This is all ahead of her.
- 18:25Right.
- 18:27But in this moment, Elizabeth accesses joy, and I just think it gives Mary probably permission to do the same.
- 18:34Right.
- 18:35So I just like that little.
- 18:37That descriptor for how she's feeling.
- 18:41I love that word joy.
- 18:44And I think when we have those anxious moments in our lives where we're like, how is this going to work out?
- 18:50I don't know, maybe to look for those little sips of joy that God sends our way, there's just the little tiny miracles, the little tiny blessings that is something that the adversary can't replicate, that joy, that peace that
- 19:07comes from God.
- 19:09And so maybe just when we're feeling anxious or stressed, take a breath.
- 19:17Give it to God.
- 19:22Give it to.
- 19:22Behold, behold the handmade.
- 19:24Okay.
- 19:25Right.
- 19:26Be it.
- 19:27Yeah, I know.
- 19:29But how beautiful that is that.
- 19:31That.
- 19:32That they were both able to.
- 19:34In.
- 19:36They're both in a.
- 19:37In a totally unforeseen circumstance.
- 19:41Absolutely.
- 19:42Yes.
- 19:43Yeah.
- 19:44And.
- 19:44And God sends them to the one person who can relate woman to woman.
- 19:49I'm having a miracle happen to me.
- 19:51Me too.
- 19:52Exactly.
- 19:53There's only two women probably in all of Judea and all of Israel that are having this exact thing happen to them.
- 20:00Both connected to the angel Gabriel, both connected with the Savior's birth, and yet the Lord brings them together.
- 20:08So follow those impressions.
- 20:10If you feel impressed to go visit somebody, go.
- 20:13They might be having a circumstance that you.
- 20:16They need you and you need them.
- 20:18You know, you are uniquely suited to me.
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:21I love that.
- 20:22And to tie into that.
- 20:23I know it's not in this section, but when you look at 46, it says, Mary said, my soul doth magnify the Lord.
- 20:29What I love about this is it's a connection to Hannah and Samuel.
- 20:33Like these are.
- 20:34This is language that Hannah uses way back.
- 20:37Right.
- 20:37This would have been a scripture.
- 20:38It would have been A scripture story that Mary relies on and knows and is familiar with about a child that comes to a woman who prayed for this child.
- 20:51Right.
- 20:52This is Elizabeth's full circle.
- 20:53Right.
- 20:54That Elizabeth is testifying to Mary about her goodness and her joy.
- 20:58And Mary is again tying them in through scripture to their experience that they're experiencing right now of this joy of blessing and of answers from God.
- 21:12So I just really love that, that we can magnify our souls when we allow God access to them, they magnify him.
- 21:22And I love that she reaches back to scripture as a comfort and a second, you know, even a third witness.
- 21:29Here we have Elizabeth as a second and a third witness being in.
- 21:32In those scripture stories of women.
- 21:34Right.
- 21:35I really love it.
- 21:36And it's cool that these women in the New Testament could draw from the stories of the women in the Old Testament and we can do the same thing now.
- 21:45We draw from Testament.
- 21:46My goodness, we have more stories than they did in the New Testament times.
- 21:50We do.
- 21:51Right.
- 21:52And that it applies to us and that you can reach for those things and feel connected to women through time in this search for relationship with Christ.
- 22:02Yeah.
- 22:03Oh, it's so beautiful.
- 22:06I love in verse 45 it says, and blessed is she that believed.
- 22:12Isn't that a wonderful phrase?
- 22:19And.
- 22:20And it says, for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord, basically saying, God has witnessed this to me and it will come to pass.
- 22:30You know, let's tack on one final verse before we conclude and then we'll do two quick takeaways.
- 22:39Verse 56.
- 22:40And Mary abode with her about three months and returned to her own house.
- 22:45So basically, Mary was with her for the duration of her pregnancy and the beginning of hers.
- 22:50And I think it's so cool that Elizabeth has just gone through pregnancy for the first time and now Mary's coming into this.
- 22:58Who knows if she's even told her mom.
- 23:00I don't know.
- 23:02But at least she has this confidant in Elizabeth who knows that the child that she has is of God and she's not going to be shunned by Elizabeth.
- 23:12It's so miraculous how God brought them together and to be and support each other through miraculous pregnancies.
- 23:25Right.
- 23:28All right there, Jen, any thoughts on that?
- 23:30And then your takeaway?
- 23:32Well, I love that she stays with her.
- 23:35I think that's a sign of friendship.
- 23:37I think that that that ability to show up for each other is a divine ability of showing up in time and of.
- 23:50Of really meeting each other where needed.
- 23:53And sometimes it's just going to be in a moment, but other times it is over time and through experience.
- 24:00And I'm grateful for a God who trusts in relationship development over time and who asks those things of us to believe in the relationship with him and that that belief is divine and that we can rely on the
- 24:19Holy Ghost to confirm when we have questions about the path that we're that next straight step.
- 24:27Those are kind of my takeaways from this part.
- 24:29What about you?
- 24:35I think God, there's so much in these few little verses here.
- 24:42I think my biggest takeaway is to trust those feelings we get from God pointing us towards someone.
- 24:51Yes.
- 24:51Especially when it might not make sense in your brain.
- 24:55But I, I love that, that Mary went with haste once she knew what, what she should, where she should be going, that she went quickly and what a blessing it must have been to both of them.
- 25:08I mean, I like, yeah, Zacharias couldn't even talk yet.
- 25:12So, you know, poor Elizabeth was probably dying to talk to somebody.
- 25:21But.
- 25:21So it's funny, but it, she was right.
- 25:25Especially this person having this common experience like you said.
- 25:28That's really, it's really sweet.
- 25:30Go with haste.
- 25:31I like that.
- 25:32Go with.
- 25:33Hey.
- 25:33So if you feel impressed to visit someone or interact with someone or feel a heavy burden, ask God, who should I talk to about this?
- 25:41Will you put someone in my path?
- 25:43It may even be someone you don't know yet, but God will put the right person in your path at the right time and go with haste.
- 25:53Right?
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:55That's great.
- 25:56That's a great take away.
- 25:59Yeah.
