- 1:01Speaker 1: the special impromptu off season episode. Brandickquitto and Austin broad
- 1:05Speaker 1: A lead Prospects with you during our summer break to
- 1:08Speaker 1: break down what's been an interesting couple of days leading
- 1:11Speaker 1: up to the NHL Draft on Friday, hosted in Buffalo.
- 1:14Speaker 1: NHL free agency begins next week as well. We're going
- 1:17Speaker 1: to talk about the Sabers movement so far, extensions, trades
- 1:21Speaker 1: possibilities now with high draft picks, trade possibilities as well
- 1:25Speaker 1: with almost twenty two million in cap spaces you can
- 1:27Speaker 1: see on the YouTube version there. So again, Austin, we're
- 1:31Speaker 1: here taking a break from the beach. I guess from
- 1:33Speaker 1: our summer because the Sabers of and yarmokeek line and
- 1:37Speaker 1: have made quite the noise so far already even before
- 1:40Speaker 1: the NHL Draft and being able to get rid of
- 1:43Speaker 1: some contracts here and set themselves up nicely for some
- 1:46Speaker 1: endless possibilities, whether they use the draft picks or they
- 1:49Speaker 1: use them to go big game hunting.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Also, just quick clarification, with the Benson contract now
- 1:56Speaker 2: officially registered, they're down to about thirteen point eight in
- 1:59Speaker 2: cap space because gotcha, the Benson contract starts this year.
- 2:03Speaker 2: But Yarmo has been not even just Yarmo, the NHL
- 2:06Speaker 2: has been Probably the Cup ended on a Sunday, and
- 2:12Speaker 2: I'd say it took about three days after that before
- 2:15Speaker 2: we got the first trade going. I believe it was
- 2:17Speaker 2: the Ross Colton trade. And then it's kind of just
- 2:18Speaker 2: been transaction, at least one transaction every day since then,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and it's been extremely fun. We kind of figured this
- 2:25Speaker 2: would be an offseason full of trades because the free
- 2:27Speaker 2: agency class wasn't really that good and with arguably the
- 2:33Speaker 2: two biggest free agents Radish and Tuck. Technically they moved,
- 2:38Speaker 2: but they never hit free agency. They were signed in trade.
- 2:40Speaker 2: So like it's been, it's been a very trade filled
- 2:42Speaker 2: offseason which is kind of what everyone predicted. And we
- 2:45Speaker 2: haven't even hitch a life first yet.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it has, and for the sake of the show,
- 2:50Speaker 1: it was great timing because the first order of business
- 2:53Speaker 1: that we're going to talk about today is that Zach
- 2:56Speaker 1: Benson signed a seven year contract extension with the Buffalo Sabers,
- 3:00Speaker 1: an annual yearly annual value of seven point five million,
- 3:04Speaker 1: seven years time, seven point five four. Zach Benson, the
- 3:07Speaker 1: restricted free agent, played so well for the Sabers in
- 3:10Speaker 1: this playoff run, and we knew that it was just
- 3:12Speaker 1: a matter of time before he got that long term deal,
- 3:14Speaker 1: with how much gm R murchiek Line was raving about
- 3:17Speaker 1: him after the season and just his impact on that
- 3:20Speaker 1: team and it was really a heartbeat for them and
- 3:23Speaker 1: a lot of aspects. Austin won. What are your thoughts
- 3:25Speaker 1: on the contract, just initial reactions to that, and what
- 3:28Speaker 1: do you think about the money going forward?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean initial thoughts are you know, we kind
- 3:33Speaker 2: of said it when we did our I don't even
- 3:35Speaker 2: know if you want to call it off season preview,
- 3:38Speaker 2: but I said, at all costs, Benson should be a
- 3:40Speaker 2: long term deal, and you know it wasn't the max
- 3:43Speaker 2: term deal, but a seven year deal is a long
- 3:44Speaker 2: term deal, and to get it at seven point five
- 3:46Speaker 2: per I think is a really nice number. Second highest
- 3:50Speaker 2: paid forward on the Sabers now in terms of aav
- 3:52Speaker 2: and salary, just below Josh Norris. But I mean he's
- 3:56Speaker 2: earned it the way he was able to produce. You know,
- 3:58Speaker 2: his point production took a big leap. His goal scoring
- 4:01Speaker 2: started to become more consistent towards the end of the
- 4:04Speaker 2: year and was really really evident in the playoffs. So
- 4:06Speaker 2: if he can get even you know, fifty percent of
- 4:08Speaker 2: that finishing ability throughout the regular season next year, you'll
- 4:12Speaker 2: see his production take another leap. And we all know
- 4:14Speaker 2: the intangibles, the grittiness, the brains, and the playmak ability
- 4:19Speaker 2: that he brings so kind of just cements Benson as
- 4:22Speaker 2: you know, a top line winger on this team, which
- 4:24Speaker 2: we know he is. But for Buffalo to get effective
- 4:27Speaker 2: minutes of him in his eight, you know, nineteen through
- 4:30Speaker 2: twenty one age seasons. To now lock him up long
- 4:32Speaker 2: term and pretty much have his entire prime locked in
- 4:36Speaker 2: a really solid value is huge and we already know,
- 4:40Speaker 2: like Yarmou gushed over Benson at the end of the
- 4:42Speaker 2: year presser. We kind of knew this was what they
- 4:44Speaker 2: wanted to do, and a big reason why I was
- 4:48Speaker 2: adamant on not giving Tuck money because it, you know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: their own doing. The Skinner buyout was their own doing.
- 4:54Speaker 2: This is the year that it's kind of tight for them,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and if they signed Tuck to ten point five, it
- 4:59Speaker 2: would have been tough to fit Benson in. So getting
- 5:02Speaker 2: him locked up long term and on a really solid
- 5:04Speaker 2: deal it was huge for Yarmo. And I think Arma
- 5:07Speaker 2: has been riding high, kind of seems like he can
- 5:11Speaker 2: do no wrong lately, and this Benson thing is just
- 5:12Speaker 2: a cherry on top before we even get to the
- 5:14Speaker 2: actual meat of the offseason. So, you know, a great,
- 5:18Speaker 2: great start for for Yarmo.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Keck Linen, Yeah, I think that's a great point in
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Skinner butt. I think it's six million against their
- 5:23Speaker 1: cap this season, right, So that would have been tough,
- 5:26Speaker 1: right with if with what Tuck ended up getting with Washington,
- 5:30Speaker 1: which we'll talk about in a minute here, but to
- 5:32Speaker 1: be able to fit all that money in your twenty
- 5:33Speaker 1: one point five million in cap space would dry up
- 5:37Speaker 1: pretty quick.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if let's just say theoretically they signed
- 5:43Speaker 2: Benson a seven point five and tucks here. Now they'd
- 5:47Speaker 2: have about three million, three three million dollars in caspspace
- 5:52Speaker 2: right now, which is not really uh saying much. So
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's it's very good that they were able to, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 2: not only Benson long term, but the tuck thing gives
- 6:04Speaker 2: them wiggle room. So really really tidy worked by Yarmo
- 6:08Speaker 2: on the on the bench. I'm interested to see what
- 6:09Speaker 2: the Benson contract structure is. We know it's seven point
- 6:11Speaker 2: five per year AAV, but I'm curious in terms of
- 6:14Speaker 2: like the signing bonuses and things like that, because right
- 6:17Speaker 2: now the only player forward on the Sabers roster was
- 6:20Speaker 2: signing bonus money is Josh Don't So that's kind of
- 6:23Speaker 2: not something the Sabers did before Yarmo took over. So
- 6:26Speaker 2: it'll be curious to see if it's the more norm
- 6:28Speaker 2: now because if Done signed and there was signing bonuses
- 6:31Speaker 2: for the forwards, and now Yarmo signs Benson and there's
- 6:32Speaker 2: signing bonuses, it feels like the Sabers are finally utilizing
- 6:35Speaker 2: that to their advantage, which is not something they did
- 6:37Speaker 2: under Kevin Adams.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And we know it was going to be around the
- 6:40Speaker 1: don contract and Don't ends up coming in at six
- 6:42Speaker 1: point nine to five for his extension, so a little
- 6:45Speaker 1: bit more for Benson, but I think it's well learned
- 6:48Speaker 1: and with the way the cap is continuing to go up,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I think this is going to be a bargain deal
- 6:52Speaker 1: for the Sabers down down the road here if Benson
- 6:55Speaker 1: continues the trajectory that he's on.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I mean it makes sense, right, Don't sign
- 6:59Speaker 2: earlier and is a little bit older, so, but it's
- 7:02Speaker 2: good to have those two locked up, both on seven
- 7:04Speaker 2: year contract extensions because those two sort of became the
- 7:07Speaker 2: heart and soul for the Sabers, and you know, with
- 7:10Speaker 2: Tuck Dahn, depending on what Yarma does the rest of
- 7:14Speaker 2: the offseason, there's there's a there's a spot in the
- 7:17Speaker 2: top line for one of these two to potentially grab
- 7:19Speaker 2: nothing against Don't. I would bet my money that Benson
- 7:22Speaker 2: has a better shot because we just he's so much
- 7:23Speaker 2: younger and has the more potential. But there's now an
- 7:26Speaker 2: opening for these two to take advantage of, and there's
- 7:29Speaker 2: two players that will do everything in their power to
- 7:33Speaker 2: work hard and grab that. So the Benson contract is nice,
- 7:37Speaker 2: tidy work and again it feels like the last couple
- 7:39Speaker 2: of transactions that Yarma has done had been widely celebrated
- 7:41Speaker 2: and this one is clearly no different.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I said it was his number one priority was
- 7:46Speaker 1: getting Zach Benson signed, and they've done it here on
- 7:49Speaker 1: June twenty fourth, before the offseason even technically begins with
- 7:52Speaker 1: the draft and free agency. So great work there by
- 7:55Speaker 1: yarm Okeeka Linen. And he wasn't done cooking Austin because
- 7:59Speaker 1: we're going in the reverse. Were a chronological order here.
- 8:01Speaker 1: That was the latest piece of business. But one of
- 8:04Speaker 1: the big ones today was obviously Alex Tuck his rights
- 8:07Speaker 1: getting moved to the Washington Capitals. We heard about this today.
- 8:11Speaker 1: It took a little bit of time for the final
- 8:13Speaker 1: trade to actually come through, but Alex Tuck's rights go
- 8:16Speaker 1: to Washington where he signs a seven year contract or
- 8:20Speaker 1: eight year contract excuse me, worth a ten point five
- 8:22Speaker 1: million per season, which again I was adamant that if
- 8:27Speaker 1: it was more than nine, I really wanted no part
- 8:29Speaker 1: of what Alex Tucker was going to bring the Sabers
- 8:30Speaker 1: in an eight year contract. The Sabers do end up
- 8:33Speaker 1: getting a third round pick in return for his rights,
- 8:35Speaker 1: along with forward David Camp, who, for you guys wondering,
- 8:38Speaker 1: is a pending unrestricted free agent, so the Sabers can
- 8:41Speaker 1: choose to let him walk or possibly sign him in
- 8:44Speaker 1: the next week. But considering that the Toronto Maple Leafs
- 8:47Speaker 1: and Tampa Bay Lightning deal and the Darren Radish rights
- 8:50Speaker 1: sign and trade type deal, Tampa Bay only got a
- 8:52Speaker 1: fifth round pick for Radish, So for the Sabers to
- 8:54Speaker 1: get a third round pick for Tuck, I'm taking that
- 8:57Speaker 1: run in all day.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah. No, the third round pick again, obviously with it
- 9:01Speaker 2: being twenty twenty seven, probably upped it a little bit.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And just nothing against Radish, who's been really solid the
- 9:07Speaker 2: last three years, but this last year was kind of
- 9:11Speaker 2: his first year as break terms. Yeah, Tuck has more
- 9:15Speaker 2: of a track record, so I kind of get that.
- 9:19Speaker 2: The David Camp is extremely interesting because, like you said,
- 9:23Speaker 2: he's appending UFA. There's no ties to him at all.
- 9:27Speaker 2: But it is curious. It's not like Washington had to
- 9:31Speaker 2: clear out a spot on their roster. I don't think
- 9:34Speaker 2: they were at A. He doesn't have as far as
- 9:37Speaker 2: I mean, he technically has a contract until July first,
- 9:40Speaker 2: which makes sense, But I didn't think they were at
- 9:43Speaker 2: the contract limit or anything like that. So I am
- 9:44Speaker 2: a little curious as to what throwing him in means, Like,
- 9:47Speaker 2: I don't know if Yarmo actually has plans to sign
- 9:51Speaker 2: him or if it was just hey, send me someone's
- 9:55Speaker 2: rights just in case, let's say Beth Mallenstein doesn't come down.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm a little curious with the David
- 10:05Speaker 2: Camp of it all. But in terms of the Alex
- 10:07Speaker 2: Tuck thing, yeah, I mean for me, it was always
- 10:11Speaker 2: it was never really about the AAV for Tuck. It
- 10:14Speaker 2: was always really just about the term. We knew Tuck's
- 10:18Speaker 2: market right when, you know, not Connor, but Connor signed
- 10:21Speaker 2: for twelve million at the start of the year. Kempe
- 10:23Speaker 2: signed for ten point six, and the Kempey one was
- 10:25Speaker 2: kind of like a perfect comparison for Tuck. Very similar production,
- 10:29Speaker 2: a little bit more like similar in age and things
- 10:32Speaker 2: like that. So when talk when Kempey got ten point six,
- 10:35Speaker 2: he kind of figured that would be what Tuck would get.
- 10:37Speaker 2: We'll say Washington was not a team I even remotely
- 10:41Speaker 2: considered it for Alex Duck. I assumed it was either
- 10:43Speaker 2: Buffalo or somewhere out west, And for whatever I don't know.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Something's cooking in Washington. Apparently they're tuck signed there and
- 10:53Speaker 2: wanted to go there for eight years, apparently more than anything,
- 10:57Speaker 2: because it didn't really seem like again, you never know
- 11:01Speaker 2: who signing trades if anyone else is actually an audit
- 11:05Speaker 2: or interested, but Washington being the team that emerged, Yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 2: it was a little bit of a shock.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean, they just are hoarding right wings right now.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I mean, apparently they're gonna move Ryan Leonard to the
- 11:16Speaker 1: left wing because they've got Tom Wilson. They just traded
- 11:18Speaker 1: for Jordan Cayrou and now just did a signing trade
- 11:20Speaker 1: with Alex Tuks. So Washington, I guess, is trying to
- 11:23Speaker 1: have a few final good years for Ovechkin. Maybe, But yeah,
- 11:27Speaker 1: Washington kind of came out of nowhere for me too.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I was figuring there's gonna be like a Calgary or
- 11:30Speaker 1: Seattle or somebody like that. But he stays in the
- 11:33Speaker 1: East Coast. And again, like he earned the right to
- 11:36Speaker 1: get paid, he was underpaid in his last contract with
- 11:38Speaker 1: the biggest goal of the Knights, and again it was
- 11:41Speaker 1: just not right for both sides. We knew Buffalo wasn't
- 11:44Speaker 1: going to pay him, you know, the market value considering
- 11:46Speaker 1: he's the best free agent available in a very weak
- 11:49Speaker 1: free agent class this season, so he almost knew that
- 11:51Speaker 1: this was writing on the wall and that he was.
- 11:53Speaker 1: If the Sabers would have been out of the playoff push,
- 11:55Speaker 1: she probably would have been dealt at the deadline, but
- 11:57Speaker 1: they kept him with an inner rental and like Tuck
- 12:00Speaker 1: had five good years as a Saber, he was major
- 12:02Speaker 1: part of that Jack Eichel trade with Vegas and coming
- 12:05Speaker 1: home to play for his hometown team. But it just
- 12:08Speaker 1: was the right time for both sides to move on.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and it kind of bode goes back to again
- 12:14Speaker 2: nothing not to live in the past, but this one particularly,
- 12:19Speaker 2: we can you could almost say the same for the
- 12:20Speaker 2: Bier mom but specifically the Tuck one was seems like
- 12:23Speaker 2: a direct consequence of just Kevin Adams dragging his feet
- 12:27Speaker 2: a little bit over his last couple of years as
- 12:29Speaker 2: a gem of the Sabers because one didn't do enough
- 12:33Speaker 2: to get the team over the top when Tuck was
- 12:35Speaker 2: on a value like a very good, team friendly deal,
- 12:38Speaker 2: and then last summer when it felt like Tuck was
- 12:42Speaker 2: willing to extend even though things had not gone well
- 12:44Speaker 2: at all. It just never got done, and by the
- 12:48Speaker 2: time Yarmo took over, it felt like it was just
- 12:50Speaker 2: not too late. Like I'm not saying I will not
- 12:52Speaker 2: say a bad word about Alex Tuck at all. He
- 12:54Speaker 2: like you said, he was on a team friendly deal,
- 12:55Speaker 2: Like when he signed with Vegas it was nothing but
- 12:59Speaker 2: a good soldier when he got to Buffalo help break
- 13:02Speaker 2: the drought and everything, and at thirty years old, was
- 13:04Speaker 2: finally getting a chance to maximize his career earnings. And
- 13:08Speaker 2: I don't blame him at all for that, but it
- 13:10Speaker 2: is very It's gonna be one where I look back
- 13:12Speaker 2: and be like, if Kevin Adams gonna got this done,
- 13:15Speaker 2: what would that contract have looked like? Like if he
- 13:16Speaker 2: would have got it done last July first, would it
- 13:19Speaker 2: have only been nine million dollars. I don't know, it
- 13:21Speaker 2: doesn't really matter. It moved on, but it's just one
- 13:23Speaker 2: of those ones where I was just like, this one
- 13:26Speaker 2: felt like a direct consequence of Kevin Adams kind of
- 13:31Speaker 2: not really doing his job properly, and that just kind
- 13:36Speaker 2: of is what it is. I mean, Y almost had
- 13:37Speaker 2: it today. I no disrespect to Alex Tuck, but we
- 13:41Speaker 2: feel like we have a lot of good players on
- 13:42Speaker 2: this roster who can fill in for him. So and
- 13:44Speaker 2: I know it's kind of funny because when Kevin Adams
- 13:46Speaker 2: said growth from within, we all kind of like, what
- 13:48Speaker 2: the heck are you talking about? But it is pretty
- 13:51Speaker 2: evident how much more willing fans, including like myself, are
- 13:56Speaker 2: willing to believe that, because we've seen Oaceland and Hellnious
- 13:59Speaker 2: kind to step up in big moments. So it doesn't
- 14:02Speaker 2: feel extremely crazy. And the Savers have so many assets
- 14:06Speaker 2: in so much cap space to make a move, and
- 14:09Speaker 2: they clearly have a GM who is aggressive and will
- 14:12Speaker 2: try to make those moves. So the Tuck deal sad
- 14:16Speaker 2: to see him go glad we didn't sign it. If
- 14:18Speaker 2: that makes any sense.
- 14:20Speaker 1: No, it does absolutely, And I mean, you know, the
- 14:23Speaker 1: glass half full, glass half empty. I mean, would you
- 14:25Speaker 1: have loved to have him, sure, But when it comes
- 14:27Speaker 1: down to you know, contracts, an eight year deal for
- 14:30Speaker 1: a thirty year old a ten point five million and
- 14:32Speaker 1: as you mentioned, the emergence of guys like like Hellnoose
- 14:36Speaker 1: and Drawn a Blank, Benson.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Beyea and even in the Leach is a Villa Yarma
- 14:43Speaker 2: mentioned by name specifically, which I thought was interesting.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Yep, Yuriko Leach is also a name to mention as well.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Like they've got guys that are continuing to go through
- 14:52Speaker 1: the pipeline here and then whatever they use with the
- 14:53Speaker 1: fourth overall pick, who knows even if they're going to
- 14:56Speaker 1: use it or trade it. But like again, like they've
- 14:58Speaker 1: got the guys to be able to fill the spot
- 14:59Speaker 1: at cheaper rates because you know that they're gonna have
- 15:02Speaker 1: some contracts coming up here. And then you know, Tuck
- 15:05Speaker 1: and Byrom and being off the roster, that just two
- 15:07Speaker 1: things you have to worry about less. Now obviously you
- 15:10Speaker 1: have to try to replace them. But if you're going
- 15:12Speaker 1: to replace from within, you know, I guess that's what
- 15:14Speaker 1: their their plan is. And you know, Tucks of polarizing
- 15:16Speaker 1: figure at times like the season, right because great first
- 15:19Speaker 1: round of the playoffs, second round of the playoffs didn't
- 15:22Speaker 1: even have a point. You know, Like he was a
- 15:24Speaker 1: guy that came to Buffalo and waved the flag when
- 15:26Speaker 1: nobody else wanted to wave the flag. Right when he
- 15:28Speaker 1: came here from Vegas. He basically said in the prescovert
- 15:33Speaker 1: he was talking to a family member and said, throw
- 15:34Speaker 1: it all your Vegas gear. You know, I'm in Buffalo now,
- 15:36Speaker 1: like he really took a lot of pride when the
- 15:39Speaker 1: team was in a drought. You know, he was a
- 15:40Speaker 1: part of the team making their first playoffs and in
- 15:43Speaker 1: fifteen seasons. So honestly, I have no negative things to
- 15:46Speaker 1: say about Alex Tuck either. I just didn't want him
- 15:49Speaker 1: resigned at the money and the term. But that doesn't
- 15:51Speaker 1: mean he didn't like the player and didn't like what
- 15:52Speaker 1: he brought in the locker room and brought in the community.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, one hundred percent. This will be, uh, I think,
- 15:57Speaker 2: a widely celebrated player when he returns to Buffle. I
- 16:00Speaker 2: don't think there will be any ifs answer butts about that.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Glad he got his payd a glad. Yarmo has seemingly
- 16:07Speaker 2: passed his first Big Four tests with flying colors. If
- 16:11Speaker 2: you go to the Dome contract, Benson contract, Tuck situation
- 16:16Speaker 2: in Byron situation has seemed to have hit them out
- 16:18Speaker 2: of the park, which is good because I know some
- 16:21Speaker 2: players or fans were getting antsy, myself included. Mine was
- 16:25Speaker 2: only just because of jealousy. I saw other teams making
- 16:27Speaker 2: moves and was like I wanted on the fun. But
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yarmo has come out swinging, and I feel like he's
- 16:36Speaker 2: not done. I feel like there's there's a lot more
- 16:38Speaker 2: to do or a lot more that's going to be done.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Yess I should say yeah. And the camp part is
- 16:45Speaker 1: interesting interesting to me too, Austin, because like I.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Wonder if best Ballenstein insurance.
- 16:51Speaker 1: That's what I was about to say, is it is
- 16:53Speaker 1: it almost an insurance for somebody that's leaving.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Like they have Beck's rights until July first, along
- 16:57Speaker 2: with camps, but it could be like we're gonna go
- 17:00Speaker 2: back real quick over the next day or so if
- 17:02Speaker 2: his ask is still a little bit too rich for us,
- 17:04Speaker 2: we can go to David camp. Like, I don't know
- 17:06Speaker 2: how much people follow it, but like the Contract to Predictions,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think it's AFP. They're usually pretty bang on campus.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Is only like it's like a vat minimum, which you know,
- 17:17Speaker 2: if back no offense to Beck Mallain sign who is
- 17:18Speaker 2: a player that has become a fan favorite, if someone's
- 17:21Speaker 2: willing to you know, Vancouver is willing to give him
- 17:23Speaker 2: four million on the open market. As much as I
- 17:26Speaker 2: love Beck, Maleenstein can't do that. Sorry, Like just camp,
- 17:30Speaker 2: So like I wonder if it's just we're going to
- 17:32Speaker 2: try to get Beck signed in the next couple of days.
- 17:34Speaker 2: If his ass is a little too rich from us,
- 17:35Speaker 2: we'll pivot to Camp because again funny Camp has versatility,
- 17:42Speaker 2: but he's a center, sabers having a lot of centers,
- 17:45Speaker 2: a lot of bottom six centers. So it was it
- 17:48Speaker 2: was interesting that his name was on there, because, like
- 17:51Speaker 2: I said, I don't think it was a situation where
- 17:53Speaker 2: I looked, the Capitals didn't have a full roster and
- 17:55Speaker 2: they weren't maxed out on contract, So curious why his
- 17:58Speaker 2: name was on there. I would have been just everyone
- 18:01Speaker 2: was just fine with the third round in twenty twenty seven.
- 18:03Speaker 2: So seeing his name I think was a little bit
- 18:04Speaker 2: of a like, oh, that's interesting.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Camp's thirty one, six foot two, one hundred ninety eight pounds.
- 18:09Speaker 1: We've seen him play, you know, player yep. I mean,
- 18:14Speaker 1: Lee fans liked him a little bit. I mean when
- 18:17Speaker 1: he when he was playing with them. You know, he's
- 18:19Speaker 1: you know what you're gonna get out of the guy,
- 18:20Speaker 1: Like he's fourth line player, you know, not gonna ship
- 18:22Speaker 1: in too much. But you know, if you can get
- 18:24Speaker 1: him at a vet minimum, maybe he's an effective player.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I didn't even know he was on Washington. To be
- 18:28Speaker 1: honest with you, I had no idea he was on.
- 18:31Speaker 2: He was Toronto, they cut him, he went to Vancouver,
- 18:34Speaker 2: and then I think Vancouver traded him at the deadline.
- 18:36Speaker 2: It was yeah, yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, year for him. So yeah, David Camp,
- 18:43Speaker 1: we'll see if he's a Buffalo Saber come July first.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But uh, let's move on to the other obvious big
- 18:48Speaker 1: deal and big uh big swing that the Armochik line
- 18:51Speaker 1: was able to able to splash so far the splash,
- 18:55Speaker 1: we'll call it unbelievable. And in full disclosure, I was
- 18:58Speaker 1: in the movies last night and my home was blowing up.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I had to turn it on do not disturb, and
- 19:03Speaker 1: I thought, like something bad happened, And all of a sudden,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I get out and I get a text from you
- 19:07Speaker 1: saying a lot happened, and I'm like just sending the
- 19:10Speaker 1: eyes emoji and then I look and it's like this
- 19:12Speaker 1: trade comes through. It's like unbelievable. Yeah, I mean, Chicago
- 19:17Speaker 1: Blackhawks and Kyle Davidson decide to trade for bowem byrom Yeah. Yeah,
- 19:25Speaker 1: So bowm Biram and Jordan Greenway go to the Chicago
- 19:29Speaker 1: Blackhawks for the fourth overall selection in the upcoming NHL
- 19:34Speaker 1: draft on Friday, along with the second round pick, which
- 19:37Speaker 1: I believe is forty fifth overall and a serviceable defenseman
- 19:42Speaker 1: that's played in the National Hockey League. So yeah, I mean,
- 19:46Speaker 1: and we'll get into your most comments a little bit later,
- 19:49Speaker 1: but the initial reaction here was that Buffalo fleeced Chicago. Yes,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and I know we'll get into a lot of it there,
- 19:56Speaker 1: but what were your initial thoughts on this move and
- 19:58Speaker 1: what you think it means for Buffalo here?
- 20:01Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, I'll I'll just go straight to
- 20:03Speaker 2: the move. We'll talk about, like you said, your most
- 20:06Speaker 2: comments and Byron himself after this. But when I saw
- 20:10Speaker 2: the Freedman tweet of Buffalo and Chicago have ver intensifying
- 20:14Speaker 2: talks on bow and Byrom, I was not hopeful because
- 20:18Speaker 2: there was not a lot on Chicago's roster that I
- 20:20Speaker 2: actually had my eye on. I was like, what is this?
- 20:24Speaker 2: Is this going to be a Sam Rinzel and Tyler
- 20:26Speaker 2: Bertuzzi package, which is fine but not anything remotely fun.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And then the you know, I think it was like
- 20:35Speaker 2: half hour later that we finally saw like the first
- 20:37Speaker 2: reports of what a return was going to be and
- 20:40Speaker 2: when I saw a first round pick before Freedman or
- 20:43Speaker 2: Sarah Valley, someone out there said first round pick is involved.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I was like, well, they only have one first round
- 20:48Speaker 2: pick and it's fourth overall, so my brain was, okay,
- 20:51Speaker 2: it's a twenty twenty seven. Don't love that. And then
- 20:53Speaker 2: Friedman and Sarah Valley both put out, yeah, the fourth round,
- 20:56Speaker 2: the fourth overall pick is involved, and immediately right there
- 20:59Speaker 2: I was like, Okay, this is a very fun trade
- 21:05Speaker 2: for the Sabers. And then the more details that just
- 21:07Speaker 2: kept coming out just kept pushing it towards a home
- 21:11Speaker 2: run for Yarmo fourth overall Louis Crevier, who is a
- 21:15Speaker 2: Logan Stanley replacement but has a little bit more upside
- 21:18Speaker 2: than Logan Stanley and is not I don't think his
- 21:21Speaker 2: lows will be as low as Logan Stanley was. And
- 21:23Speaker 2: then it came out they were taken on Jordan Greenway's contract,
- 21:27Speaker 2: and then it came out that we were also getting
- 21:29Speaker 2: the forty fifth overall selection, and it was the first
- 21:31Speaker 2: time in a long time that I can remember, but
- 21:35Speaker 2: not only was every Sabers fan celebrating, but the entire
- 21:39Speaker 2: hockey world was just like, I don't understand what Chicago
- 21:41Speaker 2: was doing. And let me get this very clear. That
- 21:44Speaker 2: is not a shot at bow and Birom Bowen. Byrom
- 21:46Speaker 2: will be the slam dunk number one defenseman in Chicago.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Is he a number one defenseman? I don't know, but
- 21:52Speaker 2: he's getting what he wanted. There is no competition for
- 21:55Speaker 2: top power play. There is no competition for the number
- 21:57Speaker 2: one spot in Chicago. It is him. Nothing against Flastic,
- 22:01Speaker 2: nothing against Kort Chiinsky, nothing against levsh Like, nothing against
- 22:04Speaker 2: these people. Right now, bow and Biron is their best defenseman.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I don't necessarily know if that's a good thing for
- 22:09Speaker 2: Chicago because Byron was very effective when being Dollion's sidekick,
- 22:14Speaker 2: and that's not a slight. Being Dollion's sidekick is it
- 22:17Speaker 2: would be a very fun role. But this is what
- 22:19Speaker 2: he wanted. And thank you to Kyle Davidson for taking
- 22:24Speaker 2: nearly ten million dollars in cap space away from the
- 22:27Speaker 2: Sabers and for giving us the fourth overall pick, which
- 22:32Speaker 2: can be used to add an elite prospect to the
- 22:35Speaker 2: Sabers team who made the playoffs last year, or can
- 22:38Speaker 2: be used to flip because dear God, I don't I
- 22:41Speaker 2: don't fully understand it from Chicago's side, but it's it's
- 22:46Speaker 2: it was. It was the most fun I've had on
- 22:47Speaker 2: Twitter in a long time, and that includes the Sabers
- 22:50Speaker 2: breaking their drought and winning the first round. It was
- 22:52Speaker 2: just an extremely fun Twitter night for every for hockey fans,
- 22:55Speaker 2: but specifically Sabers fans.
- 22:57Speaker 1: And I mean, if you look at it, Jordan Greenway
- 22:59Speaker 1: for a second round pick, I mean you're able to
- 23:01Speaker 1: get that, get him off the roster essentially for one
- 23:03Speaker 1: more year.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that would have been tough. I honestly was a
- 23:08Speaker 2: little bit surprised that we didn't have to add in
- 23:11Speaker 2: a draft pick. I know, again, the cap went up
- 23:13Speaker 2: as much as it did meant people had cap space
- 23:15Speaker 2: to spare, so like getting these cap dumps was probably
- 23:18Speaker 2: not going to cost what it usually did. But I
- 23:20Speaker 2: at least thought it, you know, when it was fourth overall,
- 23:22Speaker 2: forty fifth overall in Crevier for Byron and Greenway, like,
- 23:25Speaker 2: did we did we have to give up twenty? Like?
- 23:27Speaker 2: Did we have to give them something we didn't? I'm
- 23:31Speaker 2: not going to say I can rationalize it from a
- 23:33Speaker 2: Blackhawks side. I know we're at a Blackhawks thing, but
- 23:35Speaker 2: like they need good players now if they want to
- 23:38Speaker 2: somehow take a step no offense to Bow and bironm
- 23:41Speaker 2: I don't think adding Bow and Byron makes them a
- 23:42Speaker 2: more competitive team than they were last year, as you know,
- 23:46Speaker 2: as offensively dynamic as he can be at times, but
- 23:49Speaker 2: from the Sabers perspective, it became very clear, especially with
- 23:51Speaker 2: Yarmo today, Byron did not want to extend here, not
- 23:54Speaker 2: because he hated Buffalo or anything like that. It was
- 23:56Speaker 2: just simply, I want to be a number one guy.
- 24:00Speaker 2: He's already got a Cup winning. Obviously he wants to
- 24:02Speaker 2: keep winning, but it's not like he's going to be
- 24:04Speaker 2: chasing a Cup for his entire career. He wants to
- 24:06Speaker 2: cash in and play a ton and he's going to
- 24:08Speaker 2: get to do that in Chicago. I don't think he's
- 24:10Speaker 2: gonna win anytime soon, but he's gonna get what he wants,
- 24:14Speaker 2: and Buffalo is able to get huge value for a
- 24:17Speaker 2: player who made it clear he was gone after this year.
- 24:22Speaker 1: And I know Yarmo would also mention. And we're going
- 24:24Speaker 1: to actually play a little bit of Yarmo's press conference
- 24:27Speaker 1: right after this in a little bit just going over
- 24:28Speaker 1: the Byron in the tough comments because there were a
- 24:30Speaker 1: couple of things I really want to touch on that
- 24:32Speaker 1: he talked about. But one part was that some players
- 24:35Speaker 1: have taken Buffalo off of their no trade list. Yes,
- 24:38Speaker 1: so that is also a plus that Buffalo is becoming
- 24:41Speaker 1: a little bit more of a destination, as Yarmo will
- 24:44Speaker 1: mention that we'll hear about. You know, Biram wanted to
- 24:46Speaker 1: be a number one defenseman. He's been stuck in the
- 24:48Speaker 1: shadow of Kill mccarr in Colorado. He's now stuck in
- 24:51Speaker 1: the shadow of Rasmus Dallen here in Buffalo. So, as
- 24:55Speaker 1: you mentioned, whether he is a number one defenseman or not,
- 24:57Speaker 1: he believes he is. I'm surprised from the sh Chicago
- 25:00Speaker 1: standpoint that there was not an extension eminent fear.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I don't think they were allowed to because Byron wasn't
- 25:06Speaker 2: even allowed to talk to Buffalo for an extension until
- 25:09Speaker 2: July first, I don't think because he's technically in the
- 25:13Speaker 2: first year of his second I don't know. It's very weird.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Clearly there is back channels where they probably were talking already.
- 25:19Speaker 2: He even said today in this introductory zoom, I haven't
- 25:22Speaker 2: taught contract yet, but I'm going to be here for
- 25:23Speaker 2: a long time, so I think Chicago had a pretty
- 25:25Speaker 2: solid idea. But I just don't think legally CBA they
- 25:30Speaker 2: were allowed to do this. But it would have been
- 25:33Speaker 2: very funny if there was no If there was no
- 25:34Speaker 2: extension coming and we got all that for Byron, that
- 25:36Speaker 2: would have been even worse for Blackhawks fans.
- 25:39Speaker 1: And especially with what the rumored AAV is going to
- 25:43Speaker 1: be for Byron in his next contract. It's looking to
- 25:45Speaker 1: be around twelve and a half to thirteen million potentially
- 25:48Speaker 1: per season, and Buffalo just was not going to be
- 25:51Speaker 1: in a position to do that with what they're paying
- 25:53Speaker 1: dollen Power Samuelson, Like they couldn't lock up a second
- 25:57Speaker 1: pair defenseman for thirteen million a year.
- 25:59Speaker 2: No, listen, I don't whatever. I don't think there was
- 26:03Speaker 2: any chance they were paying him more than dollying, whereas
- 26:06Speaker 2: I think Chicago will pay him more than Dollian. So
- 26:09Speaker 2: it just it is what it is. Like I said,
- 26:11Speaker 2: he the top four was lightning in a bottle for
- 26:14Speaker 2: Buffalo last year. It was clearly their play driver. It
- 26:16Speaker 2: was their heart and soul. It sucks to lose Byron
- 26:19Speaker 2: because he is a very good offensive defenseman, but when
- 26:21Speaker 2: you still are bringing back three out of that top four.
- 26:25Speaker 2: That's a good thing. And I thought it was pretty
- 26:27Speaker 2: notable that Kacklin and straight up said we're looking for
- 26:30Speaker 2: a Byron replacement already, which I mean, he didn't have
- 26:34Speaker 2: to say that, but he did, so I thought that
- 26:35Speaker 2: was pretty notable.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, they're gonna have to find another number
- 26:39Speaker 1: four defenseman, right like we were. We'll talk about the
- 26:41Speaker 1: kessel Ring trade. Like you treat you, you moved out
- 26:43Speaker 1: to defencemen, so you almost think that they're going to
- 26:46Speaker 1: be in the market for one. It doesn't sound like
- 26:49Speaker 1: Crevier's going to be like you said, he's gonna be
- 26:51Speaker 1: a third pair of guy at most, another big defenseman,
- 26:54Speaker 1: which seems to be Yarmo's mo o in his trades
- 26:57Speaker 1: and acquisitions, just acquiring you know, tree unks back there.
- 27:00Speaker 1: But that can skate. Crevier, you know, he was a
- 27:02Speaker 1: seventh round pick back in twenty twenty but almost a
- 27:04Speaker 1: good story and played some games for Chicago and seems
- 27:07Speaker 1: like he can skate for a player his size, which
- 27:09Speaker 1: is pretty rare being at the size that he is.
- 27:13Speaker 1: So we'll see sort of how he fits into Buffalo here.
- 27:15Speaker 1: But with the return of getting fourth overall, and the
- 27:18Speaker 1: second round pick for a cap dump of Greenway and Byron,
- 27:21Speaker 1: who wasn't going to resign after this season anyway. I
- 27:24Speaker 1: don't think you've got to come up with a better
- 27:25Speaker 1: dream scenario for Buffalo here.
- 27:27Speaker 2: No, and again, nothing against Crevier, nothing against the Blackhawks.
- 27:31Speaker 2: I Thinkrevy is very serviceable player, but it was notable
- 27:35Speaker 2: when Blackhawks fans were like, he was literally our best
- 27:38Speaker 2: defenseman at times last year. Again, nothing against Crevier, nothing
- 27:42Speaker 2: that's to Blackhawks. He does not need to be anything
- 27:46Speaker 2: close to a Maybe there's times where he's got to
- 27:52Speaker 2: step up into the top four, maybe depending on what
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yarbo does. But clearly he is going to be the fifth, sixth,
- 27:57Speaker 2: seventh defenseman here, and I like the skill set that
- 28:00Speaker 2: brings for that role. If he is Logan just straight
- 28:02Speaker 2: up a Logan standard replacement, I'll be it right handed
- 28:04Speaker 2: instead of left handed. I am fine with that. I
- 28:06Speaker 2: am fine with Crevier playing on the third pair. Watching
- 28:08Speaker 2: some of his tape and things like that. He's big,
- 28:10Speaker 2: he's physical, he likes to fight, he's got a big
- 28:12Speaker 2: shot literally Logan stand so I'm cheap, way cheer, yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 2: way cheaper. I am fine with that. Yeah, so getting
- 28:19Speaker 2: that on top of the two picks and clearing up
- 28:21Speaker 2: the cap space. Home run remains to be seeing what
- 28:24Speaker 2: happens next, but that's what we'll talk about it a
- 28:26Speaker 2: little bit later. But yeah, I mean so far off
- 28:29Speaker 2: and running. Liked every move that yar mode. And now
- 28:33Speaker 2: the fun part is every move that comes now is
- 28:37Speaker 2: basically going to be an addition for the Sabers.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yep, it will be. Let's go to Yarmokeka. Linon's quick
- 28:42Speaker 1: thoughts here about three or four minutes from earlier today,
- 28:46Speaker 1: speaking with the media down in Buffalo at the Bills
- 28:49Speaker 1: headquarters where the Sabers are hosting their draft with it
- 28:51Speaker 1: being decentralized even though they are the hosts, and he
- 28:54Speaker 1: discusses the boem Byrom and Alex Tuck moves. Let's hear
- 28:57Speaker 1: what he had to say from today.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Are you getting to these situations that you've seen around
- 29:01Speaker 3: the league now that players have the right to become
- 29:05Speaker 3: ufa unrestricted free agent in this case a year from.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Now, and and.
- 29:11Speaker 3: You know, we we liked Boneen bire him a lot
- 29:13Speaker 3: and wanted to resign him. That wasn't going to happen,
- 29:16Speaker 3: and so we had to make a decision, and and
- 29:19Speaker 3: the deal that we had in front of us, and
- 29:21Speaker 3: a couple of deals but we had in front of
- 29:23Speaker 3: us were too good to pass on. So we made
- 29:27Speaker 3: the trade. And now we have some draft capital that
- 29:31Speaker 3: we can use to improve our team, whether it's in
- 29:34Speaker 3: the near future with the trade, through a trade or
- 29:36Speaker 3: or by making a pick. But we'll weigh all those
- 29:40Speaker 3: options until the draft time and and make make another
- 29:44Speaker 3: decision or two.
- 29:46Speaker 1: He didn't want to negotiate.
- 29:47Speaker 3: He wasn't going to sign with us, so didn't leave
- 29:49Speaker 3: us an option to to do anything else. But this well,
- 29:53Speaker 3: we tried to convince Bone to stay. That was the
- 29:56Speaker 3: first priority, and we did that basically. I was working
- 29:59Speaker 3: on that during the whole a year. And and and
- 30:01Speaker 3: you know, because I thought his role was big on
- 30:03Speaker 3: a team he played twenty two twenty three minutes only
- 30:07Speaker 3: the power play play time was the difference between Rasmus
- 30:12Speaker 3: Dealin who who had the most nice time on the
- 30:14Speaker 3: team on d But you know, he, uh, he wanted
- 30:19Speaker 3: to get a chance to be a number one defenseman.
- 30:20Speaker 3: I respect that he has a year left before he
- 30:24Speaker 3: gets to a free agency and and uh uh, you
- 30:29Speaker 3: know that's that's when the players have a lot of
- 30:32Speaker 3: power and now you see that sometimes even two years
- 30:34Speaker 3: left in the contract where a sort of make a
- 30:38Speaker 3: power move and and make it well known that they're
- 30:41Speaker 3: not signing an extension. And then then the more term
- 30:45Speaker 3: that you have left, the better value you can get
- 30:49Speaker 3: for a player. In this case, we had one more
- 30:51Speaker 3: year left before his free agency, and we we feel
- 30:54Speaker 3: like we got very good value. Well, yeah, that's in
- 30:57Speaker 3: this case. That always comes with the with the territory
- 31:00Speaker 3: that they want to know if they can get them resigned,
- 31:02Speaker 3: and you know, if that didn't happen, they would have
- 31:04Speaker 3: been in the same situation that we were, so that
- 31:08Speaker 3: would have affected the trade. Every team that we talked
- 31:11Speaker 3: to basically wanted to know if he was going to
- 31:13Speaker 3: resign with him. So, but I'll leave that up to
- 31:15Speaker 3: Chicago to talk about. I think that's a question for
- 31:19Speaker 3: him more than me. We we wanted to sign him.
- 31:22Speaker 3: The one thing that I've always said that is, you know,
- 31:25Speaker 3: it depends on the contract. Obviously, with a thirty year
- 31:30Speaker 3: old player, there's there's risk involved. If you want to
- 31:34Speaker 3: go max term eight years, it still is. Then there's
- 31:38Speaker 3: the money and and we're tight on cap. This summer
- 31:42Speaker 3: because of the we have that Skinner buy out counting
- 31:45Speaker 3: six and a half million against our cap just this year.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Then we'll get into a lot better situation a year
- 31:51Speaker 3: from now. But but the AAV counts all eight years
- 31:55Speaker 3: and and so that's something that we needed to consider,
- 32:00Speaker 3: is that, Okay, if we signed him to a certain number,
- 32:02Speaker 3: does this now mean that we have to take two
- 32:04Speaker 3: or three, maybe four players off our roster to make
- 32:07Speaker 3: it work cap wise. And so that that was a
- 32:11Speaker 3: balancing act with our take on things. And you know,
- 32:16Speaker 3: it's he's a good player, but we have we have
- 32:20Speaker 3: a lot of faith in our group and and he's
- 32:23Speaker 3: he's going to be missed, but but we'll be fine. Yeah,
- 32:28Speaker 3: I think we have a pretty good idea. So now
- 32:32Speaker 3: now it's it's just looking at it if we can
- 32:34Speaker 3: get some massive value back for somebody that wants to
- 32:37Speaker 3: sign him, and we can do a sign and trade
- 32:39Speaker 3: and and get get at least something in return.
- 32:43Speaker 1: There was sabers Jar manager Yarmo key line and speaking
- 32:46Speaker 1: with the media earlier today video and audio video and
- 32:48Speaker 1: audio courtesy of w g r z t V, Austin
- 32:52Speaker 1: the last part, there was a little bit about the
- 32:53Speaker 1: signing trade, which ended up happening with Alex Stuck later
- 32:55Speaker 1: in the day. But what were your thoughts from what
- 32:57Speaker 1: Yarmo said there, it was he was pretty uh, he's
- 33:00Speaker 1: pretty honest about both the buyer MA and the Tuk
- 33:02Speaker 1: situations and that they weren't they just weren't comfortable with
- 33:05Speaker 1: what the kind of money that they wanted.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Yeah, for Tucky, I think it was a combination of
- 33:10Speaker 2: term and dollars, right. He even said, he's like when
- 33:12Speaker 2: you have a thirty year old and you go max term,
- 33:14Speaker 2: there's risk involved, which is kind of what anyone who
- 33:18Speaker 2: was against signing Tuck. That was basically an argument, right, Like,
- 33:22Speaker 2: I love Tuck, He's a great player. I'm not saying
- 33:24Speaker 2: he's not worth ten and a half million. I just
- 33:25Speaker 2: can't give him. I just I'm very leary of giving
- 33:28Speaker 2: him eight years with Byram, I honestly am a little shocked.
- 33:34Speaker 2: There was just no like, no, I want to go somewhere.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I'm number one. I thought maybe if you offer him
- 33:40Speaker 2: the ten mil that he was looking for, maybe you
- 33:43Speaker 2: could convince him to stay. The Armold made a good point, like,
- 33:46Speaker 2: aside from power Play one, he was playing all things considered,
- 33:51Speaker 2: a top pair role defenseman, clearly the power play one,
- 33:55Speaker 2: and that extra couple minutes of ice time at even
- 33:57Speaker 2: strength is what he is looking for and he's gonna
- 34:02Speaker 2: get it, and it'll be interesting to see what his
- 34:03Speaker 2: contract looks like. But like Yarma said, you got to
- 34:07Speaker 2: find a way to maximize the value of players in
- 34:10Speaker 2: these situations, and I think he did. Getting what you
- 34:12Speaker 2: got for Byron was awesome. And getting a third rounder,
- 34:14Speaker 2: even if it's next year and a potential rights to
- 34:18Speaker 2: a guy you might look at signing it, just a
- 34:21Speaker 2: third rounder alone is good because Toronto only had to
- 34:24Speaker 2: give up a fifth for Darren Radish. And I know,
- 34:26Speaker 2: like I said, two different types of players, but a
- 34:28Speaker 2: third next year versus a Firth this year, like a
- 34:31Speaker 2: fifth this year versus a third next year. I think
- 34:33Speaker 2: he did very good on those two situations.
- 34:37Speaker 1: And those are the two best free agents available talking Radish,
- 34:40Speaker 1: and now they're both off the market, so that makes
- 34:43Speaker 1: it even even less of a free agent class that
- 34:46Speaker 1: we knew was going to be fireworks in the trade market.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Because of this free agent class, there wasn't just a
- 34:51Speaker 1: there wasn't enough impact players for teams that are really
- 34:54Speaker 1: making it to looking to make big rides and big,
- 34:57Speaker 1: big moves this offseason to improve their team. When you
- 35:00Speaker 1: look at the free agent list, there just really isn't
- 35:02Speaker 1: that many players that are going to make that big
- 35:03Speaker 1: of a difference. Even the Alex Tucks, and they are
- 35:05Speaker 1: in rashes of the world, you know, have question marks
- 35:08Speaker 1: as well, So not that they're off the board, and
- 35:10Speaker 1: we knew that those two were going to get paid
- 35:11Speaker 1: just based off of that alone.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of the thing we've been saying the
- 35:17Speaker 2: whole time was it's why I thought Tuck one, it
- 35:23Speaker 2: would go to the market. If I'm being honest, this
- 35:24Speaker 2: is your year to maximizing the classes week. He didn't
- 35:27Speaker 2: go to market, but he got the money he was
- 35:29Speaker 2: looking for from Washington. Not a whole lot left in
- 35:35Speaker 2: terms of difference makers. There's obviously players to sign, but
- 35:39Speaker 2: it just feels like, again, there's gonna be a ton
- 35:40Speaker 2: more trades happening rather than free agency. You know, whether
- 35:45Speaker 2: you look at there's like the John Carlson's of the world,
- 35:49Speaker 2: or he'll get a nice short term contract with some
- 35:52Speaker 2: big money. I'm sure there's the Anders lead. These are
- 35:55Speaker 2: all older veteran guys who can't help your team. But
- 35:58Speaker 2: these are not guys that are gonna like, I'm sorry,
- 36:01Speaker 2: I can't say that, because we don't know what the
- 36:02Speaker 2: heck is gonna happen. Charlie Coyle got a six year
- 36:05Speaker 2: deal from Columbus. These are not guys that typically you
- 36:09Speaker 2: would say, oh yeah, I'm gonna hand out huge contracts too.
- 36:12Speaker 2: But we know what happens on free agency, so it's
- 36:14Speaker 2: gonna be very interesting to see who picks and chooses
- 36:17Speaker 2: to add via free agency versus what trades are still
- 36:20Speaker 2: out there to be made. But I think in the
- 36:23Speaker 2: early test that, like I said earlier, Yarmo has passed
- 36:26Speaker 2: all of his early test this offseason, and now time
- 36:30Speaker 2: for hopefully it's time for some fun, because now it's
- 36:34Speaker 2: time for him to go hunting. Whether he trades the
- 36:38Speaker 2: fourth overall pick, whether he trades the twentieth overall pick,
- 36:41Speaker 2: whether he trades some young players on this team, he's
- 36:44Speaker 2: got a lot of options. And if you know what
- 36:48Speaker 2: he said about the no trade clause holds true, there's
- 36:50Speaker 2: some players that were not normally typically available to Sabers
- 36:54Speaker 2: Sabers fans that we can start looking at because there
- 36:59Speaker 2: were start to become a little bit more taken serious
- 37:01Speaker 2: around the league. So it's hopefully going to be a
- 37:04Speaker 2: fun week and a half to two weeks up here.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean, when you look at what's available
- 37:10Speaker 1: and what's not available in the free agent list, you
- 37:11Speaker 1: almost wonder. You know, it's got to come from the
- 37:13Speaker 1: trade market, and you know, Yarmo, he's already shown that
- 37:16Speaker 1: he's not afraid to make big swings, and you expect
- 37:18Speaker 1: one coming to Buffalo here. The other trade from a
- 37:21Speaker 1: little bit while ago. This seems like three weeks ago
- 37:24Speaker 1: considering what else has happened. But Michael kessel Ring, you know,
- 37:27Speaker 1: we know sort of what happened with him being in
- 37:29Speaker 1: Lindy's doghouse throughout the rest of the season, didn't really
- 37:31Speaker 1: play got into that one playoff game where he played
- 37:34Speaker 1: like under eight minutes or something like that. Just was
- 37:37Speaker 1: not a guy that ended up being in the long
- 37:39Speaker 1: term plans. After we thought he was going to be
- 37:41Speaker 1: the centerpiece of the JJ Pitturk trade to Utah, which
- 37:45Speaker 1: luckily landed them Josh don in the deal, who ends
- 37:47Speaker 1: up being the major part of that. But they move
- 37:50Speaker 1: him to a team in San Jose that I follow
- 37:51Speaker 1: pretty closely. They need, you know, NHL types of defenseman.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Michael Kesterering could even potentially play top pair depending on
- 37:58Speaker 1: what they do, but at least a defenseman for the
- 38:01Speaker 1: San Jose Sharks is a right shot. And Buffalo flip's
- 38:05Speaker 1: first round picks with the Sharks their second first because
- 38:08Speaker 1: obviously the Sharks picks second overall, but they flipped them
- 38:11Speaker 1: number twenty for twenty seven and Michael Kessel Rings. So
- 38:14Speaker 1: Buffalo moves up seven spots there and finds a new
- 38:17Speaker 1: home for a defenseman that has shown that he can
- 38:19Speaker 1: be a top four and we'll have every opportunity with
- 38:22Speaker 1: a young Sharks team.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I was kind of something we assumed was going
- 38:26Speaker 2: to happen. I honestly thought, especially when I thought Bowen
- 38:30Speaker 2: Byron was still part of this long term future, I
- 38:32Speaker 2: didn't think Husting had any shot of staying here. He's
- 38:36Speaker 2: a pro, right, he wants to have a bigger role,
- 38:38Speaker 2: kind of like Byron did, and I didn't think he
- 38:40Speaker 2: would be happy sticking around on a third pair role
- 38:44Speaker 2: or fighting for a roster spot. Basically, especially with the
- 38:47Speaker 2: arbitration rights, you don't want to pay that type of
- 38:49Speaker 2: player the money. He probably would have been awarded, and
- 38:52Speaker 2: just kind of everything you heard about him after he
- 38:56Speaker 2: was healthy and not getting in the line up, it
- 38:58Speaker 2: kind of felt like there was a bit of a action there.
- 39:00Speaker 2: So you know, I thought maybe you'd be able to
- 39:02Speaker 2: get a second or third round pick for him. You
- 39:04Speaker 2: kind of got that based off evaluation of twenty seven
- 39:07Speaker 2: to twenty it's it's about equivalent of a mid to
- 39:10Speaker 2: late round second pick. So decent work there from Yarmo
- 39:15Speaker 2: on a player who was just looking for a fresh
- 39:18Speaker 2: start and asked for a fresh start. So good value there.
- 39:21Speaker 2: And you know, the almost spent a lot of draft
- 39:24Speaker 2: capital at the trade deadline and he's done a decent
- 39:25Speaker 2: He's sorry, decent is underselling it. He's done a very
- 39:28Speaker 2: good job of recouping the draft capital that he spent.
- 39:32Speaker 2: And this Kestling trade was kind of the first one
- 39:35Speaker 2: that kind of started everything off.
- 39:37Speaker 1: And we thought that the Sabers would trade number twenty seven,
- 39:40Speaker 1: but it was maybe for something. But they end up
- 39:42Speaker 1: moving up in the draft, so they've got at the
- 39:44Speaker 1: time of recording this, they're picking four and twenty on
- 39:47Speaker 1: Friday night, so it'll be interesting there. But again, this
- 39:50Speaker 1: is a nice trade for San Jose as well. I
- 39:52Speaker 1: think they get kessel Ring almost at a bargain, I
- 39:54Speaker 1: would say, for only seven spots for what they were
- 39:57Speaker 1: looking for, a right shot. And again he was a
- 40:00Speaker 1: main piece of the j. J. Perturka trade last summer,
- 40:02Speaker 1: but Josh Doone obviously has become a major part of
- 40:05Speaker 1: that as well. So obviously Kevin Adams deserves some flowers
- 40:08Speaker 1: and making sure that Josh Stone was part of that
- 40:10Speaker 1: trade when it was just originally kessel Ring, but it
- 40:13Speaker 1: just seemed like he was not going to be part
- 40:14Speaker 1: of the long term future. He was passed on the
- 40:16Speaker 1: depth chart, it felt like by guys like Logan Stanley
- 40:19Speaker 1: and even like Luke Schen and Zach Metza, right, So
- 40:22Speaker 1: unfortunately for kessel Ring, but he's gonna have a great
- 40:24Speaker 1: opportunity out there in San Jose. So that was the
- 40:27Speaker 1: final trade there. So Austin will get to the juicier
- 40:31Speaker 1: stuff here. The rumors, everything that's going on right now.
- 40:33Speaker 1: It's been a wild already NHL offseason, and I'm sure
- 40:37Speaker 1: it's gonna ramp up before Friday's Round one and even
- 40:40Speaker 1: Round two on Saturday, leading into NHL Free agent frenzy.
- 40:43Speaker 1: But a lot of options for the Sabers here. We've
- 40:45Speaker 1: heard names flying around if they do decide to trade
- 40:48Speaker 1: the picks or they select four and twenty. We've heard
- 40:52Speaker 1: the Connor Hellibucks, the Matthew Knives, the Vinton Trochecks today.
- 40:56Speaker 1: But what are your just initial thoughts on what you
- 40:59Speaker 1: think they're going to do with four and twenty hit,
- 41:01Speaker 1: whether they select it or trade it.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I don't really know what they're gonna do. I am
- 41:07Speaker 2: of the ilk of keep for trade twenty, mostly just
- 41:12Speaker 2: because one drafting in the top four I know isn't
- 41:16Speaker 2: always an exact science. The top four pick could be
- 41:19Speaker 2: very good, can be very bad. But when you're the
- 41:21Speaker 2: saver reas and you just made the playoffs and you
- 41:22Speaker 2: have the potential to add a very I don't think
- 41:28Speaker 2: it's a stretch to say what would be your Maybe
- 41:31Speaker 2: it would be your immediately your top prospect in your organization,
- 41:33Speaker 2: depending on how you view like Benson's not a prospect.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Hellany snoslon are not prospects anymore. So like this kid
- 41:38Speaker 2: you took it forth overall, whoever it is, would be
- 41:40Speaker 2: your immediate top prospect. And on the flip side, I'm
- 41:43Speaker 2: not advocating for trading a guy like an Oaceland or
- 41:46Speaker 2: a cool each or something like that. But when you're
- 41:48Speaker 2: adding a top four pick, it does make that a
- 41:51Speaker 2: little bit more palatable if you're gonna go big game hunting.
- 41:55Speaker 2: So I am of the opinion where you should draft
- 41:57Speaker 2: at fourth and trade twentieth. At the very least, you
- 42:02Speaker 2: should hold for as long as possible to see how
- 42:05Speaker 2: the board falls. Not saying this is going to happen.
- 42:07Speaker 2: There is a zero point zero one percent chance of
- 42:09Speaker 2: this happening. But in a world where potentially ivar Stenberg
- 42:13Speaker 2: could be available at fourth overall, adding a player like
- 42:16Speaker 2: that is a home run. Or if you look at
- 42:19Speaker 2: the forward who could be available at four, whether it's
- 42:21Speaker 2: Byork who is a just built in a lab to
- 42:24Speaker 2: be a Buffalo Saber based off the type of player
- 42:27Speaker 2: that they love, or a Kale Malhultra who has a
- 42:30Speaker 2: lot of high end center potential as well. So I
- 42:33Speaker 2: just think keeping four allows you so many options to
- 42:36Speaker 2: extend the length of your potential window while also having
- 42:39Speaker 2: currency like twentieth, forty fifth and some young players to
- 42:43Speaker 2: make your team better to capitalize on the immediate future.
- 42:49Speaker 1: And I think, honestly it's all going to depend on
- 42:52Speaker 1: san Jose at two, whether they pick Stenberg or whether
- 42:55Speaker 1: they pick Chase Reed, I think is really going to
- 42:57Speaker 1: make the board fall. We know the Malho connection to Vancouver,
- 43:01Speaker 1: that seems like all the stars will align for him
- 43:03Speaker 1: to be there at three for them. But if Stenberg
- 43:06Speaker 1: falls to three, does that pivot Vancouver to select Stenberg
- 43:09Speaker 1: ahead of Melhood, leaving malholtre in at number four for
- 43:12Speaker 1: Buffalo or potentially Chase Reid if San Jose doesn't take
- 43:16Speaker 1: him at number two and they really need a defenseman,
- 43:18Speaker 1: although clearing out Eckland to basically move in Stenburg, Like,
- 43:21Speaker 1: there's so many moving parts to this, but I think
- 43:23Speaker 1: san Jose at two is the wild card and how
- 43:25Speaker 1: they're going to be the domino effect of how the
- 43:27Speaker 1: rest of this thing goes.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think, Sorry, I don't obviously know
- 43:32Speaker 2: what they're thinking of. In my personal opinion, it's Stenberg.
- 43:36Speaker 2: It too like there's just there's no reason to overthink that.
- 43:39Speaker 2: I know people are saying they need a defenseman. Chase
- 43:41Speaker 2: Reid's pretty solid, Carson Carroll's is really good, things like that,
- 43:45Speaker 2: but I just don't think it's I don't think there's
- 43:47Speaker 2: any reason to overthink it. You take Stenburg with his potential,
- 43:50Speaker 2: and then that makes it interesting at three and four
- 43:52Speaker 2: because we know the malculture connection to Vancouver and we
- 43:56Speaker 2: know now Buffalo has a shot at adding a true
- 44:00Speaker 2: potential blue chip forward prospect again into this organization while
- 44:05Speaker 2: also being a playoff team. So it's that's why I
- 44:07Speaker 2: think it's it's more fun to keep four because it
- 44:11Speaker 2: makes your long term future even better, and then you
- 44:13Speaker 2: have the pieces to make your short term future better.
- 44:15Speaker 2: So unless someone knocks your socks off, there's no reason
- 44:18Speaker 2: to move. For as much as I love the Matthew Nyes,
- 44:20Speaker 2: I don't know if I can stomach trading four for him.
- 44:24Speaker 2: As much as Connor Hallibuk is very fun, There's no
- 44:26Speaker 2: way I'm trading fourth overall for a goalie you mentioned Trocheck.
- 44:29Speaker 2: No chance I'm trading four for Vincent Trocheck. The only
- 44:32Speaker 2: thing where I think maybe I could be entice is
- 44:34Speaker 2: if you're telling me Jason Robertson could be a Buffalo Stabra,
- 44:36Speaker 2: Sure you're gonna have fourth overall, but I still think
- 44:40Speaker 2: trade twenty and assets and keep four is the way
- 44:43Speaker 2: to go. And in terms of if they stick, at four.
- 44:46Speaker 2: What are they gonna do? I don't know, because Yarmo
- 44:48Speaker 2: does like to do some off the board stuff in
- 44:50Speaker 2: the first round, whether it was the Ye York Channikov
- 44:52Speaker 2: pick a couple of years ago and things like that.
- 44:55Speaker 2: So a lot of options for Yarmol Kecklin and to
- 44:58Speaker 2: improve this team now and to make the future even stronger.
- 45:02Speaker 1: I agree. I think twenty should be dealt, whether it's
- 45:04Speaker 1: for somebody you know that it be the trade market
- 45:07Speaker 1: or well, it has to be the trade market, so
- 45:09Speaker 1: I mean twenty to me, I think would be expendable
- 45:12Speaker 1: for they'd have to blow your socks off, as you mentioned.
- 45:15Speaker 1: But again I think it all depends on what San
- 45:17Speaker 1: Jose does at two. Reds twenty two brings up a
- 45:20Speaker 1: good point in the chat that with San Jose acquiring
- 45:22Speaker 1: the ninth overall pick from Ottawa, you almost wonder if
- 45:24Speaker 1: that's where they take their defense and whether it's you
- 45:26Speaker 1: knowsmits or you know what I mean, like either verr
- 45:30Speaker 1: hooff Smith's or Carrol's. If they fall to nine at
- 45:33Speaker 1: San Jose, I think they have to take Stenberg at two.
- 45:35Speaker 1: But again the conversation's there and Mike Greer former Saber
- 45:39Speaker 1: has also been open to the possibility of making that trade.
- 45:42Speaker 1: But I don't unless the Zach Wrensky's coming back. I
- 45:44Speaker 1: don't know if San Jose is trading that pick.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and as far as we know, the Lorensky meaning
- 45:49Speaker 2: is not happening till after the draft, which is a
- 45:50Speaker 2: bold strategy by Columbus.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Yeah. So I mean Buffalo at four. Realistically, if Chase
- 45:56Speaker 1: Reed is there, do you take him or do you
- 45:57Speaker 1: go with B. York.
- 46:00Speaker 2: As much as I like Chase Reid, I think, yeah,
- 46:07Speaker 2: you gotta go B. Yorke. I think you gotta go B. Yorke.
- 46:09Speaker 2: He fits the mold. He's a playmaking center who plays
- 46:15Speaker 2: a similar style to to Zach Benson and Constant Helenious
- 46:18Speaker 2: like I think that he is my guy. I would
- 46:21Speaker 2: not be upset about Malhotra I saying this, and I'm
- 46:25Speaker 2: not saying I would be on board for this or whatever.
- 46:27Speaker 2: I know Yarma likes to be a little off the board.
- 46:29Speaker 2: It's a little bit too early for him for my liking.
- 46:31Speaker 2: I do really like Albert Smits. I just can't see
- 46:34Speaker 2: for being Smit's but I wouldn't hate that even if
- 46:38Speaker 2: it is a little bit of a reach, because I
- 46:39Speaker 2: really do like this style of hockey that he plays
- 46:43Speaker 2: and what he would bring. But I think you got
- 46:45Speaker 2: to go with one of those forwards if if you're
- 46:46Speaker 2: staying at four and they're available, which the two of
- 46:49Speaker 2: them are going to be available if the board falls
- 46:51Speaker 2: the way it's supposed to.
- 46:53Speaker 1: But you you like the go Byork the.
- 46:56Speaker 2: As Yeah, he is the guy. Yeah.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I mean if Malhultra for some reason doesn't go to Vancouver.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Like Malhotra a lot too.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah, And obviously if Stenberg fell to four, like you
- 47:09Speaker 1: run up to the.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Table, sty Stenburg falls.
- 47:11Speaker 1: The four, and like with twenty in a in a
- 47:17Speaker 1: potential trade, like it's twenty available, Like does twenty get
- 47:20Speaker 1: you trocheck?
- 47:23Speaker 2: Should? I don't know. Yeah, listen, I with the trades
- 47:28Speaker 2: that went down the other day, I cannot even begin
- 47:32Speaker 2: to tell you what an actual proper evaluation is anymore.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Because simone Nemets fetched two first round picks. So yeah,
- 47:38Speaker 2: I would be willing to part with twenty for tro Check.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Is that enough to get it done? I don't know anymore?
- 47:45Speaker 1: Right, I saw mock today Mike Moreally of NHL dot
- 47:49Speaker 1: Com has Verhoff going to Buffalo at four, which I
- 47:51Speaker 1: thought was very interesting.
- 47:53Speaker 2: A little bit of a reach, a little bit of
- 47:55Speaker 2: a reach. But I do very much like Keaton Verov
- 47:59Speaker 2: a lot.
- 47:59Speaker 1: He's raw, He's a raw prospect, right, he was a
- 48:02Speaker 1: goalie for the first half of his life. Right, So
- 48:04Speaker 1: you know at four, that's a little bit of a reach.
- 48:06Speaker 1: But again, after we're getting outside the top you know
- 48:08Speaker 1: three or four players, it's notably a weaker draft, right,
- 48:12Speaker 1: Like in.
- 48:12Speaker 2: There's Riarmo said it himself today. There's another fall off
- 48:16Speaker 2: at twenty, which is why he kind of wanted to
- 48:18Speaker 2: get up there.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Right, That's why you make the trade with San Joseta
- 48:23Speaker 1: move from twenty seven to twenty.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Right, So there's a yeah, there's a couple of there's
- 48:26Speaker 2: a couple of big drops in this first round. But
- 48:29Speaker 2: having a top four pick, like I do think if
- 48:32Speaker 2: you end up with a Buorich or Malhotra, you're sitting
- 48:35Speaker 2: pretty I'm not gonna They're not gonna be like the
- 48:37Speaker 2: why don't you never know? I'm not gonna sit here
- 48:40Speaker 2: and say we have a cal mccarr Mitch Marner style
- 48:43Speaker 2: fourth overall pick. But I think if you end up
- 48:45Speaker 2: with one of those two, you have a very very
- 48:47Speaker 2: very solid NHL prospect.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Now, my my other question to you is does this
- 48:53Speaker 1: change anything for redeem Merka. Now, obviously, with Byron being
- 48:56Speaker 1: moved kessel Ring being moved, we know he's probably gonna
- 48:59Speaker 1: need another year to in Rochester before he comes up
- 49:02Speaker 1: to play. You know, we knew that he was traded
- 49:05Speaker 1: to Saint Louis and the Paraco deal, but it got mixed.
- 49:07Speaker 1: So do you see a future here for redeem Merker?
- 49:10Speaker 1: Do you still think that he's going to be a
- 49:12Speaker 1: main trade ship that Yarmo's gonna use at his disposal
- 49:14Speaker 1: if you were to take a defenseman like Chase read it.
- 49:16Speaker 2: For Yeah, No, I think there's absolutely still a future
- 49:19Speaker 2: here for him. I'm not saying I'm not even saying
- 49:22Speaker 2: I would be thrilled or whatever. Part of me wonders,
- 49:27Speaker 2: do you recall Saint Louis and try to get that
- 49:30Speaker 2: Paraco deal done again? What does that deal look like
- 49:32Speaker 2: now now that Saint Louis has a better evaluation of
- 49:35Speaker 2: the market and defense are kind of going for crazy.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Is Merca in a first even enough to get that
- 49:39Speaker 2: done anymore? I don't know. I have honestly wondered if
- 49:43Speaker 2: they just revisit the Paraco deal.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Well, so you even want it though at this point,
- 49:46Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 49:47Speaker 2: I mean, he's a right shot, top four defenseman. I
- 49:50Speaker 2: don't I'm not gonna sit here and say I love it.
- 49:52Speaker 2: But I'm also not gonna sit here and say I
- 49:55Speaker 2: pooh poo it. I'm only bringing it up because it's
- 49:57Speaker 2: a deal that Yarmo did make. It was what was
- 50:00Speaker 2: a trade that happened, It just was mixed by a
- 50:02Speaker 2: no trade clause. So I'm I'm curious as to if
- 50:05Speaker 2: that's something that is revisited or does he pivot and
- 50:08Speaker 2: find another player. Again, not saying Buffalo is gonna trade
- 50:13Speaker 2: for this guy, but like based off guys that are
- 50:14Speaker 2: on the market, we know risk A Linen's name has
- 50:16Speaker 2: been floated out there, we know you know, are you
- 50:19Speaker 2: going big game hunting? Wrensky's name is out.
- 50:22Speaker 1: There, Morgan Riley, he's going out west.
- 50:26Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure they already said, like, do you do
- 50:29Speaker 2: you find I don't know. I'm curious as to that
- 50:33Speaker 2: because even if Murka is still in this organization, I
- 50:35Speaker 2: don't think we're seeing him playing meaningful minutes for buffal
- 50:37Speaker 2: until he's twenty two, which is still two three years.
- 50:40Speaker 1: From now, right, and if the fourth overall pick. Realistically,
- 50:43Speaker 1: if it's not Stenberg, they're gonna be a while before
- 50:45Speaker 1: they make it.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Again, this is nothing. I'm not saying he should
- 50:52Speaker 2: be rushed or anything, but part of me wonders if
- 50:53Speaker 2: it ended up being like a Chase Reid who's comitted
- 50:55Speaker 2: to Michigan State next year as the fourth overall pick,
- 50:58Speaker 2: is he signed next April when the college cheason is over.
- 51:01Speaker 2: I'm not saying he is or isn't. I'm just saying,
- 51:03Speaker 2: like we know, with if it's a Chase Reid, the
- 51:05Speaker 2: route that he goes, usually you go to college your
- 51:10Speaker 2: year after you're drafted because that means you can sign
- 51:13Speaker 2: pro immediately. So, like i'd be curious if that's the
- 51:15Speaker 2: that's the case. That's not an immediate impact, but that
- 51:18Speaker 2: is someone you would be looking at. If Chase Reid
- 51:20Speaker 2: is Buffalo's draft pick, you probably have to factor him
- 51:23Speaker 2: into the lineup in the spring.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Steve Noble says in the chat he believes Klaber is
- 51:29Speaker 1: a gem on defense as well.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Claire is an absolute gem for sure, but at the
- 51:33Speaker 2: same time, if a team wants Klayber to get a
- 51:35Speaker 2: deal done as much as I like Claybor bye bye,
- 51:41Speaker 2: like no offense. I'm not saying these players are good
- 51:43Speaker 2: or not, but we did also add McCarthy inster back
- 51:45Speaker 2: to the NHL roster or not, sorry, the NHL organization
- 51:48Speaker 2: last like a couple of months ago. We signed them
- 51:50Speaker 2: to their entry level deals. So like there are defense
- 51:53Speaker 2: in the system again, so I don't I don't know
- 51:58Speaker 2: that again Subdia having the fourth overall pick, if they
- 52:00Speaker 2: keep it, it could be any one of these guys,
- 52:02Speaker 2: and I'm I'm probably happy with it. I'm just leaning
- 52:04Speaker 2: towards the forwards right now.
- 52:06Speaker 1: And plus, like you've got Metsa, you've got Crevier now
- 52:09Speaker 1: as NHL defenseman, right So there could be another backlog there. Hey,
- 52:14Speaker 1: Ryan Johnson, he's technically still on the roster, isn't he
- 52:16Speaker 1: or in the organization or is he a pending RFA.
- 52:19Speaker 2: No, he signed a three year deal last year.
- 52:22Speaker 1: He was a guy we thought was going to be
- 52:23Speaker 1: a top four at one point, one more point on
- 52:26Speaker 1: the goaltending Austin. I know, lucan In, I forget uh.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I think it was today a tweet went out that Uh,
- 52:31Speaker 1: theremos looking at possibilities for Lucan in do you think
- 52:34Speaker 1: that would have any any ramification on it? Possible Connor
- 52:38Speaker 1: Hellibuck to Buffalo trade. We know Florida is going to
- 52:40Speaker 1: be you know, hot and ready onto that as well
- 52:43Speaker 1: when Bobrowski is gone with the move they just made
- 52:46Speaker 1: for Brady Kachuck, making the Atlantic even more difficult. So
- 52:49Speaker 1: would to Atlantic teams get in a bidding war with
- 52:51Speaker 1: Winnipeg for the services of Connor Hellibuck? Like what like
- 52:55Speaker 1: would you want Hella bucket? What the price is going
- 52:58Speaker 1: to be most likely for Winnipeg and what do you
- 53:00Speaker 1: think the future is there with the other goalies if
- 53:03Speaker 1: that is a you know what Buffalo decides to do.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I would want hellibuk U for sure. I know,
- 53:09Speaker 2: I said I don't know if I would last time
- 53:11Speaker 2: we talked. The more I thought about it, it would just
- 53:13Speaker 2: be extremely fun to add that. But if hellibuk is
- 53:17Speaker 2: coming in, yeah, Lukenan's got to be going the other way.
- 53:21Speaker 2: But just on Lucanan in general, I'm not I'm willing
- 53:24Speaker 2: to give him another year. He's a reasonable contract and
- 53:27Speaker 2: things like that. But if you are willing to listen
- 53:30Speaker 2: on him. It has to be for you, like a
- 53:31Speaker 2: bona fide upgrade. And like I said at the last
- 53:34Speaker 2: podcast that we did, the reason I'm skeptical of that
- 53:37Speaker 2: is there's like four goalies in the league that are
- 53:40Speaker 2: not in that middle tier of could be very good,
- 53:42Speaker 2: could be very bad. And Hellibook's the only goalie available
- 53:45Speaker 2: out of those tiers. So if you can get Hellibuok done, sure,
- 53:50Speaker 2: If not, don't have any Like he almost seems like
- 53:55Speaker 2: he's fine with running it back, but obviously he's not
- 53:57Speaker 2: gonna say he's not fine with running it back. So
- 54:00Speaker 2: he also said he wanted to sign Byral long term,
- 54:02Speaker 2: and that was proved false within a month, so not
- 54:05Speaker 2: false within a month, but it didn't. He was gone
- 54:07Speaker 2: within a month. So I would be all in on Hell,
- 54:11Speaker 2: but depending on the cost. Like I said, there's no
- 54:13Speaker 2: chance in hell I'm including the fourth overall pick, but
- 54:16Speaker 2: Lucanan would have to be going the other way if
- 54:18Speaker 2: that's the case, and for five years left at like
- 54:20Speaker 2: eight and a half million for thirty three year old, Like,
- 54:22Speaker 2: I don't hate that, but I think the ads from
- 54:26Speaker 2: Buffalo are going to be upfront and on defense.
- 54:29Speaker 1: But I could be wrong because the top four d
- 54:32Speaker 1: and a top line right winger just went out the
- 54:34Speaker 1: door right with Byram. Yes, talk whether Thompson is going
- 54:38Speaker 1: to be a full time winger, that's also a discussion, obviously,
- 54:41Speaker 1: if they bring in a tro checker a centerman. We
- 54:44Speaker 1: know Robert Thomas's name was thrown around, but it seems
- 54:45Speaker 1: like he's going to stay in Saint Louis for the
- 54:47Speaker 1: time being. So would you move Thompson to the wing
- 54:50Speaker 1: now and try to fill that center spot as a
- 54:52Speaker 1: full time You know that's so realistic. You're looking for
- 54:55Speaker 1: a number one center, not a number one winger.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, listen, I I'm not saying I love
- 55:00Speaker 2: this idea, but if we have a center spine, of
- 55:06Speaker 2: let's use Trocheck because that's a rumor out there, and
- 55:08Speaker 2: I don't think that's an unreasonable cost. It's not my face,
- 55:11Speaker 2: it's not one of my top five options. But it's
- 55:13Speaker 2: also not something I'm going to be like, oh, this
- 55:15Speaker 2: is awful. Actually I shouldn't say, because I don't know
- 55:17Speaker 2: what he would cost. But if we had a Trocheck
- 55:19Speaker 2: Norris mcleoud Carrick center spine, sure don't hate that Trocheck
- 55:28Speaker 2: was still effective at thirty three years old. Don't love it,
- 55:33Speaker 2: but I don't hate it. I just think my favorite option,
- 55:39Speaker 2: and it has a yarmo connection to it, is Kreel Marchenko.
- 55:42Speaker 2: But I feel like that is going to be an
- 55:43Speaker 2: astronomical ass from Columbus if he actually is truly available.
- 55:48Speaker 2: But I think you're either looking at that. I don't
- 55:52Speaker 2: love Mason McTavish. I don't know how truly available. Owen
- 55:56Speaker 2: Tippett is Thomas I think is a no go. Like
- 55:59Speaker 2: these are the six forwards that have been kind of
- 56:02Speaker 2: out there. I think we're either looking at a Troe
- 56:04Speaker 2: check or or a Nie is something that's actually potentially
- 56:08Speaker 2: possible that's gonna happen.
- 56:09Speaker 1: And he's a winger, right, So.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Nice is a winger, yeah, which means Cage's center, which
- 56:13Speaker 2: is fine. But just in terms of top six forwards,
- 56:15Speaker 2: which we know they need, I think we're looking at
- 56:17Speaker 2: Trocheck or Nis is the real possibilities. And to ask
- 56:23Speaker 2: for knives feels outlandish and it's not really at least
- 56:27Speaker 2: shou I was gonna say, but not really because look
- 56:30Speaker 2: at what the trade packages have been so like, it
- 56:32Speaker 2: feels like it's outlandish to me. But it's market value
- 56:35Speaker 2: based off what the heck we've seen go down, So
- 56:37Speaker 2: I don't know it'll be. It'll be very interesting to see.
- 56:39Speaker 2: I the yarmo is saying we're actively looking for the
- 56:42Speaker 2: buyering replacement perked me up a little bit because I
- 56:44Speaker 2: was like, Oh, maybe his big splash move will be
- 56:46Speaker 2: defense and then we'll settle for not settle, well, maybe
- 56:49Speaker 2: pursue like a Trocheck level forward instead. I don't know
- 56:52Speaker 2: it'll be. He's got He's got what just under forty
- 56:58Speaker 2: eight hours now to before the draft starts, so got
- 57:02Speaker 2: a little bit of a deadline coming for him. And
- 57:04Speaker 2: it does seem like Buffalo, Toronto, Montreal, and San Jose
- 57:07Speaker 2: seem to be the most active teams.
- 57:12Speaker 1: And potentially Florida for Hellibuck.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Yeah again, I just and they have to clear out
- 57:16Speaker 2: a contract. And unless I can't see Winnipeg being interested
- 57:20Speaker 2: in Evan Rodriguez, I feel like Winnipeg would want Lindell,
- 57:22Speaker 2: and I just don't know if Florida would do that.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Maybe they would. I mean, adding Hellibook to that team
- 57:26Speaker 2: would be crazy, but if it costs you your number
- 57:31Speaker 2: two center for a goalie, they're a smart team. They've
- 57:35Speaker 2: won two Cups, so I'm not going to question that.
- 57:36Speaker 2: But value wise, it just doesn't seem smart. And Helli
- 57:41Speaker 2: Book does seem willing. Based off every report I've seen,
- 57:43Speaker 2: hell Book seems more willing to go to other teams
- 57:46Speaker 2: than these other guys do. He doesn't seem like Hellbook's
- 57:48Speaker 2: strong arming his way to Florida or Vegas.
- 57:51Speaker 1: He doesn't have a three team no move clause.
- 57:53Speaker 2: It doesn't seem like it. Again, this could just be
- 57:56Speaker 2: quiet and not being reported, but it seems like he's
- 57:58Speaker 2: more willing to go to other Like the teams that
- 58:01Speaker 2: Sarah Vali and Ferraro and all them have said for
- 58:03Speaker 2: Hellbuck have been consistently like Detroit and Buffalo Florida. But
- 58:07Speaker 2: like the fact that Detroit and Buffalo are in on
- 58:09Speaker 2: that list makes me sound like Hellbuck is not pulling
- 58:13Speaker 2: up Brady.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Kuchuk right, And again like long term, probably not the
- 58:18Speaker 1: right decision, but short term they've got barkovn Bennett if
- 58:21Speaker 1: they do move Lundell, right, But yeah, that's they're trying
- 58:24Speaker 1: to win a Cup in the next two years. But
- 58:25Speaker 1: from Buffalo's perspective, I think the X factor here is
- 58:27Speaker 1: Yuri Kulich could he fill in that number one center spot.
- 58:30Speaker 1: We saw he did at times earlier in the year
- 58:32Speaker 1: before he got the blood clots. So, I mean, the
- 58:34Speaker 1: Sabers do have options within, whether that's rushing the Helenus
- 58:39Speaker 1: or who leachs into that role. You know, you would
- 58:41Speaker 1: almost hope that they bring in, you know, a veteran
- 58:43Speaker 1: to kind of stabilize that. You know, Norris, I don't
- 58:46Speaker 1: know what his you know, long term future is on
- 58:47Speaker 1: this team. And Ryan McLeod is also a player in
- 58:49Speaker 1: the name that was thrown around in potential you know deals,
- 58:52Speaker 1: if Buffalo were to make a trade with Saint Louis
- 58:54Speaker 1: and things like that.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I like if the true ask for Hellibuk is
- 58:59Speaker 2: a top six center as part of the package, I mean,
- 59:03Speaker 2: our options are Norris and McLoud, and I just don't
- 59:05Speaker 2: I don't know if that's enticing to Winnipeg honestly, and
- 59:08Speaker 2: it's not a bad thing towards these guys, but on
- 59:10Speaker 2: the flip side, it feels like Winnipeg is not going
- 59:13Speaker 2: to be the type of team to start a tear
- 59:15Speaker 2: it down, So I don't know. Yeah, Norris is an
- 59:21Speaker 2: interesting one to me, just because the no trade clause
- 59:23Speaker 2: kicks in July first. Now, granted, it's only a ten
- 59:25Speaker 2: team no trade list, so it's not like it's that limiting,
- 59:29Speaker 2: but I wonder if we see I don't know, because
- 59:32Speaker 2: if Norris isn't moved and the ten team no trade
- 59:35Speaker 2: clist kicks in, you limit yourself enough to where it's like, oh,
- 59:40Speaker 2: the teams that are on that list would probably be
- 59:43Speaker 2: the teams that are. I don't know Norris is one,
- 59:45Speaker 2: but Cloud's name was out there, But I wonder how
- 59:47Speaker 2: much of that was just I don't local media because
- 59:52Speaker 2: it was a hot topic on WGR, but I don't
- 59:54Speaker 2: know if I've actually seen his name out there on
- 59:55Speaker 2: the rumor mill by like any actual insiders. That's not
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: a guy I'm in a rush to trade either. I
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: know he his playoff appearance and performances have been whatever.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: But a third line center who can put up fifty
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: points for you in the regular season is still extremely valuable.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I have no issue if he's my fourth line center
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: in the playoffs. So not in a rush to move him.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Not necessarily in a rush to move Norris, but Norris,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: I'm just wondering with the no trade clause kicking in
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: and the health concerns. Is something going to happen there?
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: That's a guy I'm looking at. But I get the
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: feeling that a big ad on defense will be the
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: way Yarmo goes, and a quality add up front, not
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: a star add up front anymore, because there's not a
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: lot of star forwards left.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: So I guess I was gonna leave you with final thoughts,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: you know, talks out. Byron's out, Castle rings out, Greenway's out,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Benson's re signed, maybe David camp is a is signed
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: as well. But I guess you know, what are your
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: thoughts here going into Friday? You know, pick and forth
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: picking twentieth. Do you think they're they're gonna keep it?
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Do you think they're gonna trade it? What is your
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I guess, as we you know, close this thing out
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: with Buffalo hosting the draft, you know they're gonna want
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: to make a big splash, and you know, have the
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: theatrics of everything there, So I guess, you know, just
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: a final thought, what do you think they're gonna do
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: on Friday? In possibly Saturday?
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: I'll say this, it's a weird thing. As much as
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: we praise Yarmo for the work he's done, he's done
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: really good work. It's a weird spot where the Savers
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: have actually on paper gotten worse. They haven't gotten better
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: on paper yet, but I've liked everything that they've done.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: So my final thought is, I think Yarmo needs to
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: ramp up the aggression for ads going forward. I think
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: he's going to. He's pretty much hinted that he's going to,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: so you know, factoring in that factoring and I'm team
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: keep forward, Trade twenty and things like that. I would
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: expect over the next couple of days one or two
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: significant moves, whether it's a forward and a defenseman, defenseman
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: and a goalie, I don't I don't know, but I
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: would expect a couple more significant moves coming from Yarmo.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Like you said, we they love the theatrics of hosting
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: the draft and things like that. And now Buffalo went
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: from back round character at the draft to main player
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: because they have a top five pick. So Yarmo and
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: company are going to be busy, and I I have
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: a weird, sneaking suspicion that the next forty eight hours
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: are going to be a lot of fun for Sabers fans,
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: as crazy as that sounds, because the last seventy two
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: hours has been a lot of fun.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and just the last season has been fun, right,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: like breaking the goal away from being in the Eastern
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Conference Final. And now they've got the fourth overall pick,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: one of only two trades that have you know, brought
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: a team into the top five in the last I
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: think it's fifteen fifteen or so years. It's only happened
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: a few times. So Armo kiek line and taking a
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: big swing here and we'll see sort of what the
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: what this team looks like next week or whenever we
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: come back on for you know, the offseason, I guess
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: fallout of everything with the draft, free agency, and potential
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: big trades here. So again, Yarmo sent out a lot
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: of any quality NHL players out the door, but you're
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: expecting that with the cap space here and resigning Benson,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: that this is only the first of many exciting ads
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: for Buffalo here as they're going to look to continue
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: to want to repeat as Atlantic Division champions, but with
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: some of the moves within the division in Toronto and
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Florida looking to get better, you know they're going to
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: have to make make some more moves that remain competitive
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: and probably the most competitive division in the National Hockey
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: League next year, so that's going to be it for
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: our pre draft and free agency. I guess offseason outlook
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: here heading into Friday's draft at key Bank Center in Buffalo,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: Round one on Friday night and then rounds two to
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: seven on Saturday. I will be there covering the event
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: with the credentials, so I'll try to keep things posted here,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: but obviously stay posted with our social media's as well.
