Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way and the producer Cameron Parker alongside, and glad
- 0:05to have you with us, and we're with you up
- 0:08until five o'clock this afternoon, and a reminder at six
- 0:12o'clock we'll be recording Long Worn Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 0:18That'll be the program out at Pluckers and the West
- 0:24Campus location at twenty two twenty two Rio Grand, So
- 0:27we'll be out there for that and hopefully if you
- 0:31are interested, you can come on out and we do
- 0:35allow you to ask questions if you'd like to. But
- 0:41the way you do it is we have these question
- 0:43cards and you fill those out, you write them in
- 0:45the questions we get some entertaining ones. Sometimes, like last week,
- 0:48somebody asked him m Jay or Lebron, just MJA or Lebron,
- 0:54and I knew his answer before you can say. He said, well,
- 0:56you know where I'm going to go. It's at Kobe. Yeah,
- 0:59lots of and and of course as a West Coaster,
- 1:02he's gonna definitely, I mean, Lebron's on the West coast now,
- 1:04but his roots are not in the West coast there.
- 1:07Speaker 2: What about you all the way? M J all the way?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I wouldn't have any argument with that. I mean,
- 1:18and of course both of us grew up in Michael
- 1:21Jordan's home state.
- 1:23Speaker 3: If you're gonna say Kobe, now I know where it
- 1:24starts coming from. But there is no Kobe Bryant without
- 1:28Michael Jordan. So for me, you gotta take m J.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, that's that's fair enough. I And you know,
- 1:40if I remember, when Kobe was still on this earth
- 1:44with us, he gave a great deal of respect and
- 1:49admiration for Michael Jordan, saying that my career would not
- 1:54have been as you know, successful as it's been without
- 2:00without Michael Jordan's competition, without his influence, all of that stuff.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And mj spoke at Kobe's funeral and gave a just
- 2:10a fantastic guilogy to remember Kobe Bryant. It's still one
- 2:15of the best things. It's tough to get through because
- 2:18it's so sad, but you could tell the respect that
- 2:21MJ had for Kobe Bryant. You know, there's a lot
- 2:24of mj impostors, and you know, the way Jordan has
- 2:28dealt with him has been very differently, but you could
- 2:30tell how much respect he had for Kobe Bryant all
- 2:34the way through his career and afterwards that MJ does
- 2:37not always give to a lot of players in this league,
- 2:39past or present.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Absolutely a no doubt about it. Our thanks.
- 2:44Speaker 1: By the way, Scott Howard, to play by play voice
- 2:46of the Georgia Bulldogs, was home with us last hour.
- 2:47If we missed the conversation, certainly you can listen to
- 2:50it on our podcast page at AM thirteen hundred The
- 2:54Zone dot com, so you can do that as well.
- 2:56Coming up in a few minutes, we're going to hear
- 2:59from log Oorne's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. There were a
- 3:01couple of things we didn't get to the other day
- 3:03that I want you to hear, and then from the
- 3:05SEC teleconference there are other things that we'll get to also.
- 3:09Speaker 2: By the way, Cameron, I.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Have a newly minted log in and password now for
- 3:16our Texas I was using one that had been passed
- 3:20along by a now former employee, and I just kept
- 3:23using it, using it, and then when I had to
- 3:25switch laptops because I had a laptop just go belly
- 3:28up on me the other day. You know, when I
- 3:31purchased that laptop during the NI t in twenty nineteen. Wow,
- 3:37when Texas was in because I put it into play
- 3:42in New York in the n I T Final four,
- 3:44when Texas beat TCU and then beat Lipscomb in the
- 3:48championship game there at Madison Square Garden, and I had
- 3:53I've had folks ask me over the years, was that
- 3:56just awful doing the n I T. And I said,
- 3:58let me tell you something. Is the oldest college basketball tournament.
- 4:02He was older than the NCAA Tournament by one year.
- 4:05It used to have a much more prominent place than
- 4:07it holds now. Having grown up in a state where
- 4:13college basketball is revered like North Carolina is, and the
- 4:17n I T.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Grew a great deal of respect.
- 4:20Speaker 1: If you couldn't get into the NCAA Tournament, that sort
- 4:23of thing, I said, let me put it to you
- 4:27this way. I am glad to have been able to
- 4:33broadcast an n I T. I'm even more happy that
- 4:37I was able to broadcast five games in the n
- 4:40I T and that Texas won that n I T.
- 4:44Having said that, I hope never to have to be
- 4:46able to broadcast an n I ever again. Hopefully they're
- 4:48in the NCAA Tournament every year. And I had I
- 4:52had a coach tell me one time that the thing
- 4:55about the n I T is it's one of two things.
- 4:59You either won to win the whole thing or go
- 5:02out in round one. You don't really want the in
- 5:05between because if you go out round one, then you
- 5:08know they're hitting the road recruiting and they're doing all
- 5:10this other stuff and trying to prepare for the next season.
- 5:13Because clearly, if you're in the niit the season did
- 5:15not go the way you wanted it to go. You
- 5:17wanted to be in the NCAAA Basketball Tournament, totally understand that.
- 5:21But once you're in it, are you in it to
- 5:23win it? And that's that's the deal. So I'm glad
- 5:26it was done for those people who have snided the comment,
- 5:30what do you do hang a ban or they didn't hang.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A separate banner for the NIT.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Just like most basketball programs, they'll hang banners up showing
- 5:38all a list of all the NCAA tournament appearances. There
- 5:41is one banner that shows NIT championships. I think maybe
- 5:47even total appearances, but championships they won two nineteen seventy
- 5:51eight when A. Lemons was the coach, and then of
- 5:53course in twenty nineteen. Those were Those were the two
- 6:00and that's it, and hopefully never had to do it again.
- 6:02But anyway, I had a newly purchased laptop and it
- 6:07finally gave up the ghost the other day.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I was working pretty well but finally died out.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So I had this other laptop that Linda had given
- 6:14me for Christmas and said, you need to put this
- 6:17in the plane.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I had not, so the months had gone.
- 6:19Speaker 1: By, had not intended to do it, and then finally
- 6:21it did it. It went under and I had to
- 6:24do it, and to press it in the service. Well,
- 6:25that meant re establishing passwords and you know, easy shortcuts
- 6:31to things, documents, all that other kind of stuff. So
- 6:35but I do now have my own specific password which
- 6:39brings me to the text line, and you're certainly welcome
- 6:44to text the program like these folks did. For example,
- 6:51we were talking about Jerry Jones earlier and somebody called
- 6:54him Jerryatric He is eighty two, turned eighty two on
- 6:58Sunday and somebody else. As much as I don't like
- 7:01Jerry Jones, I just hope he doesn't have the same
- 7:05downhill spiral like Vince McMahon did. Considering these two have
- 7:10very similar personalities. Vince McMahon, I think it was a
- 7:14little more aggressive. Alpha had to be that alpha dominant
- 7:20personality because of WWE and all that other stuff and
- 7:24UFC and all all of those things. So anyway, that
- 7:29or Vince McMahon what the XFL also was his other
- 7:33big thing. So then and then somebody else said the
- 7:37Oregon coach talking about Dan Landing kind of gaming the
- 7:42system using that twelve minute on the field thing because
- 7:45it ran time off the clock, so it ran four seconds,
- 7:50so it left him with six seconds, so that by
- 7:52the time Will Howard slid to the turf, time ran out.
- 7:57So yeah, they gained the system on that, and then
- 8:00it got changed today by the NCAA. Somebody elsead the
- 8:02Oregan coach reminds me too much of vodka Tom, and
- 8:07I may or may not be saying that because I'm
- 8:08a Buckeye fan.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Help me. I'm vodka Tom.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Tom Herman was vodka. I never saw Tom Herman have
- 8:19a vodka. I never saw that. Okay, and then somebody
- 8:24else said, hey, your alma mater also won the n IT.
- 8:26Yes they did. North Texas did under Grant Maccastle, who's
- 8:30now the coach of Texas Tech. They did. They won
- 8:32also a CBI. A CBI Texas playing in the CBI once.
- 8:38That's one I could say, I hope never happens again,
- 8:42and probably never.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Would of it.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I don't know that Texas would accept the reason they
- 8:46did in twenty thirteen. It was the only time in
- 8:49his whatever sixteen years that rig Barnes ever missed the
- 8:52NCAA tournament. And the reason they accepted it that year
- 8:57in twenty thirteen was he had I think seven freshman
- 9:00and he wanted them to play and said, these guys
- 9:02need experience. Well, the Irin Center had all kinds of
- 9:07date conflicts, so they couldn't play any home games, at
- 9:12least they were not. They were going to have to
- 9:13play two on the road at Houston, and if they
- 9:17won that, they were going to have to go to
- 9:20James No, George Mason and play there before getting a
- 9:24chance to host I think a semifinal. Well, they didn't
- 9:27get that far because they lost on a tipping at
- 9:29the Buzzer to Houston seventy five to seventy year or
- 9:32seventy three seventy one.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Anyway, they lost.
- 9:34Speaker 1: At what is now the what is it for Tita Pavilion. Yeah,
- 9:41we were there last year and it was it was
- 9:45rather it was not good for Texas. Houston's a good
- 9:48basketball program, but anyway, they lost that night to that
- 9:51and that was the only time they've been in the CBI.
- 9:54And this Texas men's team is picked. It's ranked nineteenth
- 10:02in the preseason Bowl pick seventh in a very competitive SEC.
- 10:06And we're gonna hear from Rodney Terry tomorrow on the
- 10:09program about that. And we're also gonna hear from Vic Schaefer,
- 10:12the Texas women's head coach, because they've been at SEC
- 10:14basketball media days, so we'll hear from them about that.
- 10:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Up next, we'll hear from Long Words head football coach
- 10:21Steve Sarkisian from the SEC teleconference and a couple other
- 10:24things that he had to offer on Monday that we'll
- 10:27get to as well when we continue here on Sports
- 10:29Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
