- 14:02:10Hi everyone, I'm Jerry Marcello and
- 14:02:12welcome to the City
- 14:02:13Center podcast from West Palm
- 14:02:14Beach.
- 14:02:15When it comes to having fun outdoors,
- 14:02:17West Palm Beach is known
- 14:02:18for events like "Forthon
- 14:02:19Flagler," "Holiday in Paradise," and of
- 14:02:21course, the award-winning "Green Market."
- 14:02:24Today we're going to talk about another
- 14:02:26outdoor event that has
- 14:02:27just been named one of the
- 14:02:29top three best outdoor concert series in
- 14:02:32the country that's by
- 14:02:33USA Today's Top 10 Best
- 14:02:35Readers Poll.
- 14:02:36It's a weekly gathering of live music,
- 14:02:39fun, and a very special
- 14:02:40sense of community you
- 14:02:41might not know about.
- 14:02:43Join us for the City
- 14:02:44Center podcast, next.
- 14:02:52Joining me today is Mary Pinnock,
- 14:02:54Marketing and Community
- 14:02:55Events Manager for the City
- 14:02:56of West Palm Beach.
- 14:02:58Mary, welcome.
- 14:02:59Welcome, thank you, Jerry.
- 14:03:01Clamatus by Night, a
- 14:03:02long-standing event in the community.
- 14:03:04Tell us a little bit more about it.
- 14:03:06Oh my gosh, well, we
- 14:03:07celebrate its 30th birthday next June.
- 14:03:10Wow, 30 years.
- 14:03:10It really is 29 and holding.
- 14:03:15Clamatus by Night is one of our heritage
- 14:03:17events here in the
- 14:03:18City of West Palm Beach.
- 14:03:19It's hard to believe
- 14:03:20since June 5th of 1995.
- 14:03:24I know, can you believe that?
- 14:03:26It's been rolling almost every Thursday.
- 14:03:28We take just like four off a year and
- 14:03:30that's holiday time.
- 14:03:32Okay, so unlike some of the yearly events
- 14:03:35like Fourth on Flagler
- 14:03:36and Holiday in Paradise,
- 14:03:37this is happening nearly every weekend
- 14:03:40for the last 29 years.
- 14:03:41It's 48 times a year every Thursday.
- 14:03:44We're how the weekend gets started.
- 14:03:47The other thing that we say, it's where
- 14:03:49memories and music are made.
- 14:03:51Nice.
- 14:03:52It really is.
- 14:03:54What was the seed that
- 14:03:55started this rolling?
- 14:03:56What made this come to life?
- 14:03:57Way back when, 1995.
- 14:04:01I think it was May of
- 14:04:021995, might have been April.
- 14:04:05The mayor at the time, Nancy Graham, she
- 14:04:07called me into her office one afternoon.
- 14:04:09She had a local beer distributor in her
- 14:04:11office that was, I
- 14:04:12think, trying to pitch orange
- 14:04:13juice or something crazy like that.
- 14:04:16But he had an idea and she had, well, she
- 14:04:19had the idea and he
- 14:04:20liked it to start a weekly
- 14:04:23concert entertainment
- 14:04:24series downtown for the summer.
- 14:04:27At that time, it was
- 14:04:29pretty much dead downtown.
- 14:04:31People left here at five o'clock, the
- 14:04:34speed of a bullet out
- 14:04:35of town, they were gone.
- 14:04:37Right?
- 14:04:38Right around that period of time, there
- 14:04:40weren't a whole lot of
- 14:04:41people living downtown.
- 14:04:43Nobody lived downtown.
- 14:04:45I can't think of hardly any buildings
- 14:04:47that were downtown that
- 14:04:48were residential, mostly
- 14:04:51office workers.
- 14:04:52She said, "I want to give this a shot."
- 14:04:55She was really trying
- 14:04:56to create a destination.
- 14:04:57We had just had the
- 14:04:58centennial the year before.
- 14:05:00She was very much in favor and believed
- 14:05:03in events as a way to
- 14:05:04bring the community together
- 14:05:06and to bring them downtown.
- 14:05:09I said, "Okay.
- 14:05:11Of course, I'm going to say
- 14:05:12whatever needs to be done."
- 14:05:13She said, "I want to start it in June."
- 14:05:17We had 30 days to put together the event.
- 14:05:22Usually an event named Clamatus by Night
- 14:05:24had started the year before for, I don't
- 14:05:27know, six or eight weeks.
- 14:05:28It was a rolling event that went up and
- 14:05:30down Clamatus Street.
- 14:05:32It was a preliminary to the Clamatus by
- 14:05:35Night as we know now.
- 14:05:37We had the name,
- 14:05:38Clamatus by Night, said it all.
- 14:05:42On June 5th of 1995, we started with a
- 14:05:46platform, literally like an
- 14:05:47eight-foot table first stage.
- 14:05:49It was a one platform stage.
- 14:05:52We had one keg of beer
- 14:05:54and one pizza vendor.
- 14:05:59That was it.
- 14:06:00That was it.
- 14:06:00That was what we had.
- 14:06:02We were just hoping to
- 14:06:03get some people together.
- 14:06:05Sure enough, about an hour into the
- 14:06:08event, this bus pulls up.
- 14:06:13I'm going to say they were in town for
- 14:06:14some kind of conference.
- 14:06:16They were actually
- 14:06:17looking for a restroom.
- 14:06:20Four hundred people got out of a couple
- 14:06:21of buses and they didn't
- 14:06:24leave until it was over.
- 14:06:26That was the beginning
- 14:06:28of Clamatus by Night.
- 14:06:30Of course, now it's grown into, we have a
- 14:06:33professional stage, we
- 14:06:35have professional sound
- 14:06:37company.
- 14:06:37We bring in some of the top bands
- 14:06:39regionally and
- 14:06:40sometimes nationally as well.
- 14:06:41It's a fantastic sound.
- 14:06:42It's a beautiful, beautiful venue.
- 14:06:45As you point out, professionally done,
- 14:06:47very, very nice thing.
- 14:06:49One of the things that strikes me most
- 14:06:50about Clamatus by Night
- 14:06:51is the sense of community
- 14:06:53that you've got down there.
- 14:06:54You see the same faces, you see new
- 14:06:56faces, but everyone knows each other.
- 14:06:59I think the beauty of this event and the
- 14:07:02events that we do,
- 14:07:04they're free events, first of
- 14:07:05all.
- 14:07:05Everybody can come.
- 14:07:07There's not anything to
- 14:07:09stop anybody from coming.
- 14:07:11The beauty of these events is you can
- 14:07:13have a crowd where one
- 14:07:14person drove up in a Mercedes
- 14:07:17and the other person walked up because
- 14:07:19they can't afford a car.
- 14:07:22They're all out there on the
- 14:07:23dance floor, they're together.
- 14:07:25There's no awareness of our differences.
- 14:07:32Isn't that nice?
- 14:07:35Everybody feels like they belong.
- 14:07:38If we can accomplish that with an event,
- 14:07:41maybe we can accomplish
- 14:07:42that in a bigger arena.
- 14:07:45Absolutely.
- 14:07:46That's a great message to send.
- 14:07:49With Clamatus by Night being such a
- 14:07:50long-standing, long-running
- 14:07:52event in the city persona and
- 14:07:57its style, what do you think
- 14:08:01really makes each event unique?
- 14:08:04Is it the band?
- 14:08:06Is it the weather?
- 14:08:07What makes each one so special?
- 14:08:09This is so many
- 14:08:09different things, I think.
- 14:08:11Obviously the music.
- 14:08:12We have a variety of different music.
- 14:08:14If you come one week and you hear rock,
- 14:08:16you're not going to
- 14:08:17hear rock the next week.
- 14:08:18You might hear Motown
- 14:08:18or Country or Reggae.
- 14:08:21There's a variety.
- 14:08:23We're pretty picky with the music.
- 14:08:25We really try to do a good search to
- 14:08:27bring in bands that are
- 14:08:28popular locally, but also
- 14:08:30bands that are touring.
- 14:08:32You may only get to see those bands once
- 14:08:34or twice a year
- 14:08:35because they're headed to the
- 14:08:36Keys to play at another
- 14:08:39location that books live music.
- 14:08:42The bands play a role.
- 14:08:44The time of year, right now we're seeing
- 14:08:47a lot of families because school's out.
- 14:08:50It's staying light later.
- 14:08:51That great lawn.
- 14:08:52That grass is amazing.
- 14:08:54The kids are playing frisbee.
- 14:08:57It's just a wonderful space to bring your
- 14:08:59family on Thursdays.
- 14:09:01When Sandy's in town, a giant holiday
- 14:09:04santry, then we've got all the people
- 14:09:06that are celebrating
- 14:09:08the traditional holiday time in December.
- 14:09:12When spring, we get spring break.
- 14:09:15Some of the spring break crowd, it just
- 14:09:18really depends on the time of year.
- 14:09:20We love that about it.
- 14:09:22The fact that it's every single week, but
- 14:09:24it's not always the same.
- 14:09:26The personality
- 14:09:28modifies with the seasons.
- 14:09:31Yes, it very much does, but the
- 14:09:33underlying reason that we
- 14:09:35do it to bring the community
- 14:09:36together is always there.
- 14:09:39Now, you mentioned the bands.
- 14:09:41Say is there an opportunity for a local
- 14:09:44band to audition to be
- 14:09:46a part of the program?
- 14:09:47Sure.
- 14:09:47We are always taking the
- 14:09:49promo packs from local bands.
- 14:09:50They can send an
- 14:09:51electronic press kit to us.
- 14:09:55We have a team that
- 14:09:56reviews them on a periodic basis.
- 14:09:59We book about three months or so out.
- 14:10:01How would he find you?
- 14:10:02How would he get in touch with you?
- 14:10:03You can write to our
- 14:10:03website, wpb.org slash events.
- 14:10:07I come at us by night.
- 14:10:08It says what to do with your EPK.
- 14:10:14So obviously success and a good vibe has
- 14:10:18been a part of this
- 14:10:18program for a very long time.
- 14:10:21The program has been recognized.
- 14:10:23It's gotten an award.
- 14:10:23Tell us a little bit about that.
- 14:10:24It's won many awards over its 29 and a
- 14:10:27half year career, but a
- 14:10:28big one most recently is
- 14:10:30USA Today named it in the top three of
- 14:10:34the best outdoor
- 14:10:35concert series in the country.
- 14:10:38That was by voting.
- 14:10:39The community voted.
- 14:10:41That's neat.
- 14:10:42That means more to us.
- 14:10:44I think that anything, the
- 14:10:45acknowledgement from the community that
- 14:10:48they love the event.
- 14:10:52There aren't many events
- 14:10:53that are that long running.
- 14:10:55I talk to other people at conferences and
- 14:10:57government that work for government.
- 14:11:00Things come and go and people change
- 14:11:03their mind about this or that.
- 14:11:05This truly is something that has
- 14:11:07satisfied and sustained and
- 14:11:09even even more successful.
- 14:11:12The endorsement of the
- 14:11:13folks who were attending it.
- 14:11:15Those are the people who voted for it and
- 14:11:16that pushed this
- 14:11:18program into an awards type
- 14:11:20of environment.
- 14:11:22As you point out, that's really an
- 14:11:23endorsement that I think
- 14:11:24should ring with a lot of folks
- 14:11:26who are thinking about coming down to a
- 14:11:28Klamatas Spinae that the
- 14:11:29folks who go there regularly
- 14:11:31really love the event.
- 14:11:32Absolutely.
- 14:11:33What we see is it only usually takes one
- 14:11:35time for somebody to come down.
- 14:11:38We have our regulars.
- 14:11:40Trust me.
- 14:11:40They're there every week.
- 14:11:42They may not come every week, but they're
- 14:11:43coming once a month
- 14:11:44or a couple of times a
- 14:11:46month.
- 14:11:47They're definitely
- 14:11:47there for the big nights.
- 14:11:49The other thing is that they know with
- 14:11:51Klamatas Spinae is we
- 14:11:52really ... It's the space where
- 14:11:54we celebrate important
- 14:11:56things in our community as well.
- 14:12:00Every Super Bowl that has taken place in
- 14:12:02Miami since 1995, Klamatas
- 14:12:06Spinae has been the official
- 14:12:08Palm Beach County celebration location by
- 14:12:10the Super Bowl as
- 14:12:12designated and sponsored
- 14:12:13by the Super Bowl Hose Committee.
- 14:12:17That is a wonderful thing
- 14:12:18to know that they entrust us.
- 14:12:21That's a big job.
- 14:12:22We have done that at least
- 14:12:25three times, I think four times.
- 14:12:27I'd have to go back in my head and count,
- 14:12:29but I think it's at least four times that
- 14:12:31we've been that group.
- 14:12:32When the Nationals won the World Series
- 14:12:36and the Astros twice, we
- 14:12:38are the official location
- 14:12:39for those designated
- 14:12:40celebrations during spring training.
- 14:12:44That's due to partnerships
- 14:12:45that we have with the community.
- 14:12:47That all comes back down to the
- 14:12:50reputation the program has
- 14:12:52for community, for quality,
- 14:12:55for all the things that
- 14:12:57people want to be associated with.
- 14:13:00That's really great to see this developed
- 14:13:02and having developed over the decades.
- 14:13:06It's also the place that when people are
- 14:13:08upset about something,
- 14:13:10they know the communities
- 14:13:12here and they come
- 14:13:13together for that as well.
- 14:13:15Last year, one of our part-time popular
- 14:13:20residents, Jimmy Buffett,
- 14:13:22when he passed away, there
- 14:13:24was so much sadness in the community, not
- 14:13:31just in our community.
- 14:13:33We very quickly put together
- 14:13:34a tribute for Jimmy Buffett.
- 14:13:37The right place to do it was
- 14:13:39obviously at Klamatas Spinae.
- 14:13:42We had a huge crowd.
- 14:13:43Everybody was so grateful for that
- 14:13:45opportunity that this year
- 14:13:47we're actually doing it the
- 14:13:50Thursday that starts Labor Day weekend
- 14:13:52and it's the Labor Day weekend show.
- 14:13:54If you know Jimmy Buffett, you know that
- 14:13:56that Labor Day weekend
- 14:13:58show is a very popular term
- 14:14:02in association with Jimmy Buffett.
- 14:14:05We're rolling out with
- 14:14:06the Caribbean Chillers.
- 14:14:07It's a fabulous tribute
- 14:14:09band to Jimmy Buffett.
- 14:14:11We have a bubbles-up tribute that we're
- 14:14:13going to do and some
- 14:14:14other special Jimmy Buffett
- 14:14:16type things.
- 14:14:17We really hope we get that crowd again.
- 14:14:20It'll be August the 29th.
- 14:14:22What do we have it?
- 14:14:22August the 29th.
- 14:14:24August the 29th.
- 14:14:25It starts at the
- 14:14:26traditional 7 p.m. or 6 p.m.?
- 14:14:28Six to nine.
- 14:14:29Okay.
- 14:14:29Six to nine.
- 14:14:30We'll be right out on the Great Lawn with
- 14:14:32those palm trees and
- 14:14:33where he lived in the
- 14:14:35background obviously.
- 14:14:39We'll have the parrot heads of the Palm
- 14:14:40Beaches out again and
- 14:14:41some of the other groups that
- 14:14:43are meaningful to Jimmy Buffett.
- 14:14:46That will be very well attended.
- 14:14:47Let's talk a little bit
- 14:14:48about what is coming up.
- 14:14:50What's on your schedule coming up through
- 14:14:51the rest of the summer?
- 14:14:52We have lots of good bands.
- 14:14:53Of course, like I said, every Thursday we
- 14:14:55have East Harbor Pop
- 14:14:56and Rock this Thursday.
- 14:14:59Then we have Classic Rock and
- 14:15:01R&B, the Melinda Alina band.
- 14:15:03We've got all different
- 14:15:04kinds of bands in August.
- 14:15:05We'll end with the Caribbean Chillers.
- 14:15:08The Derek Mack band is
- 14:15:10going to be here in August.
- 14:15:11That's a local band that's Motown Rock.
- 14:15:14They've played many times in the dance
- 14:15:16crowd where they get a great.
- 14:15:18It's a good energy night.
- 14:15:19Then we have a new
- 14:15:20band, Poor Life Decisions.
- 14:15:21We haven't had them before.
- 14:15:23We try to mix it up.
- 14:15:25We have some bands that we've had, I can
- 14:15:28name a couple, that go
- 14:15:29back almost 30 years.
- 14:15:31We try to bring in some new bands too
- 14:15:33because you have to keep
- 14:15:35it fresh and different.
- 14:15:37Sure.
- 14:15:38Okay.
- 14:15:38If I am someone who has never gone to a
- 14:15:41climatospy night,
- 14:15:42interested in coming, maybe I live
- 14:15:44in city or maybe I live outside somewhere
- 14:15:46in the county, give
- 14:15:47me best tips for really
- 14:15:50enjoying myself.
- 14:15:51How do I get there?
- 14:15:52Where do I park?
- 14:15:52Those types of things.
- 14:15:54It starts at six.
- 14:15:56If I wasn't working it, I would probably
- 14:15:58come a little early and
- 14:15:59maybe grab something to
- 14:16:00eat on the street.
- 14:16:03The city garages are
- 14:16:05reasonably priced at that time.
- 14:16:08Thursday nights,
- 14:16:09they're not usually too busy.
- 14:16:13I would get here as early as five maybe,
- 14:16:175.30, park, bring a lawn
- 14:16:19chair or bring a blanket.
- 14:16:23The grass though on that
- 14:16:24great lawn is so amazing.
- 14:16:25I've seen people without blankets, but I
- 14:16:29would bring a chair or a
- 14:16:31blanket just for comfort.
- 14:16:32There's no gates or
- 14:16:33anything people have to go through.
- 14:16:34No, it's absolutely free.
- 14:16:35We're right at the foot of Colmata
- 14:16:37Street, right where the
- 14:16:39fountain is, and right in
- 14:16:41that great lawn.
- 14:16:44We have any of the refreshments that you
- 14:16:47would want to drink.
- 14:16:50We have food vendors that
- 14:16:51are out, so that's handled.
- 14:16:54I should plan on
- 14:16:55getting there 5.30, 6 o'clock.
- 14:16:57How late do we go?
- 14:16:58We go till nine.
- 14:17:00We go till nine.
- 14:17:01We find that to be over the course of 30
- 14:17:04years, I can tell you
- 14:17:05many different times.
- 14:17:07We've gone to this, we've gone to that
- 14:17:08nine o'clock's sweet spot.
- 14:17:10At that point, the families, generally
- 14:17:12the kiddos need to get home.
- 14:17:16The adults a lot of times like to go down
- 14:17:18the street, and we're
- 14:17:19really happy to send
- 14:17:20them down the street
- 14:17:21to other establishments.
- 14:17:23Nine o'clock's a sweet spot.
- 14:17:26Like I said, tried many different times,
- 14:17:30and six to nine seems to be the best.
- 14:17:32This time of year, you want to dress cool
- 14:17:35in cool clothes because it can be hot.
- 14:17:38Is it buggy?
- 14:17:39Not bugs, but it can be hot, at least
- 14:17:43till seven o'clock or so,
- 14:17:44you want to wear sunscreen.
- 14:17:46There are shady patches, and as that sun
- 14:17:48goes down beneath the
- 14:17:49buildings, it cools off even
- 14:17:52more.
- 14:17:53We've covered a lot of ground here.
- 14:17:56Is there any specific points you really
- 14:17:58want to share with
- 14:17:59folks about the program?
- 14:18:02I just hope everybody
- 14:18:04realizes how special it is.
- 14:18:07Like I said, I have friends in other
- 14:18:09municipalities, and very rarely do you
- 14:18:13see an event that lasts
- 14:18:16almost 30 years so far with
- 14:18:18the following that it has.
- 14:18:20My kids grew up there.
- 14:18:23Now I'm seeing their kids, you know, kids
- 14:18:25of kids grow up there.
- 14:18:29It really is a...
- 14:18:32My husband never misses it, and it's not
- 14:18:34because I'm there,
- 14:18:35because he says, "I really need
- 14:18:36that once a week.
- 14:18:37I need to be able to be outside."
- 14:18:39All of his friends, he met at Clomadis by
- 14:18:41night, and they're an assortment.
- 14:18:43When I tell you this is an assorted group
- 14:18:45of friends, they all met there.
- 14:18:48They meet just about every Thursday
- 14:18:50night, and they leave the
- 14:18:53drama of their lives behind,
- 14:18:56and they listen to music, and they enjoy
- 14:18:58this beautiful city, and
- 14:19:00they enjoy this beautiful
- 14:19:01event.
- 14:19:02It is a beautiful event, and we're hoping
- 14:19:04that more and more
- 14:19:05people will take advantage
- 14:19:06of this on a weekly basis, and wow, a
- 14:19:09tremendous amount of work
- 14:19:10by you and your team to make
- 14:19:12this happen on a weekly basis.
