- 0:00Speaker 1: Wildlife ranger Ian Hunt. Good morning to you, Ian.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning Katie.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Ian. What's happened?
- 0:09Speaker 2: We received a phone call this morning from a member
- 0:11Speaker 2: of the public, so they'd witnessed a crocodile attack a
- 0:15Speaker 2: dog on the beach at Katherinea near Ripstone Cliffs, and
- 0:19Speaker 2: we went to attend obviously to work out if we
- 0:21Speaker 2: could apprehend that crocodile. When we got there, there was
- 0:26Speaker 2: no sign of the crocodile, which was unfortunate, but we
- 0:29Speaker 2: did manage to catch up with the guys that had
- 0:31Speaker 2: had their dog attacked and the poor little stuffy had
- 0:35Speaker 2: definitely received some puncture wounds from a crocodile there this morning.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Oh no, so tell us exactly where that was, Ian.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So that was just out the front of the stairs
- 0:45Speaker 2: that go down to the beach from Ripstone Cliffs onto
- 0:47Speaker 2: Kasina Beach.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And so that crocodile at this point in time, you've
- 0:53Speaker 1: not been able to capture it, but presumably it's still nearby.
- 0:58Speaker 2: That's what we think at the moment. Yeah, we haven't
- 1:01Speaker 2: been able to locate it whereabouts at the moment. We
- 1:04Speaker 2: did do an expensive search of the beach this morning,
- 1:06Speaker 2: but we've been unable to locate him at this point.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Made how's that little staffy.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, he's got a few holes in him, just in
- 1:15Speaker 2: the back of his legs there, so he's definitely had
- 1:17Speaker 2: a run in this morning. But he seemed in good
- 1:19Speaker 2: spirits when we caught up with him, so hopefully he'll
- 1:22Speaker 2: be well on the road to recovery in the next
- 1:24Speaker 2: few weeks.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Wow, and any idea what the size of that crocodile
- 1:27Speaker 1: is based on you know those Well, you've said little holes,
- 1:31Speaker 1: so I'm assuming it's a smaller crocodile, but I could
- 1:33Speaker 1: be very wrong.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, that's did We did have a couple of people
- 1:37Speaker 2: call in so they had seen the crocodile this morning,
- 1:40Speaker 2: And obviously the size of that crocodile ranges from people
- 1:43Speaker 2: who witnessed that animal. But yeah, judging by the size
- 1:47Speaker 2: of the bite marks, it would probably be a two
- 1:49Speaker 2: meter plus crocodile.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And so really this is a very timely reminder Ian,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I guess firstly for people to really take care if
- 1:59Speaker 1: they are in the area today. By the sounds of it,
- 2:02Speaker 1: there is a crocodile there and it is well, it's
- 2:05Speaker 1: attacked a dog this morning.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. Obviously We are aware, and most people
- 2:10Speaker 2: should be aware that there are crocodiles moving up and
- 2:13Speaker 2: down our coastlines all the time. But yeah, the extra
- 2:16Speaker 2: vigilant at the moment, there is a crocodile that's been
- 2:18Speaker 2: around obviously has a tax one dog. So if you're
- 2:21Speaker 2: planning on taking your dog for a walk in the
- 2:22Speaker 2: next couple of days, please be extra vigilant.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That is incredibly good advice. Now, I if anybody sees
- 2:28Speaker 1: that crocodile, should they get in contact with you.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Absolutely that not only any crocodile that sided around the
- 2:34Speaker 2: darw And Harbor and Management area please contact us as
- 2:37Speaker 2: soon as possible on our mobile number which is on
- 2:39Speaker 2: the website that numbers man twenty four hours a day,
- 2:42Speaker 2: seven days a week. And the earlier we get onto
- 2:45Speaker 2: these croc sidings, the easier of this for us to
- 2:47Speaker 2: deal with those animals.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, now, Ian with that. At the risk of sounding
- 2:51Speaker 1: like I'm repeating myself, I'm just thinking, if someone's jumped
- 2:53Speaker 1: in their car now and they've just joined us and
- 2:56Speaker 1: they are hearing about this crocodile attack on a dog,
- 3:00Speaker 1: little staffy this morning, can you just explain for us
- 3:03Speaker 1: one more time exactly where it was and what areas
- 3:06Speaker 1: people need to be vigilant with this crocodile in particular
- 3:10Speaker 1: this morning.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yep. So this incident happened at Dripstone Clifts at Catherine
- 3:14Speaker 2: and Beach, just across from where the stairs go down
- 3:19Speaker 2: as alum in your set of stairs and go down
- 3:20Speaker 2: and cliff onto the axis of the beach there, and
- 3:23Speaker 2: it's just out the front in the shallow water at
- 3:26Speaker 2: the front of those steps of Dripstone Cliffs. But yes,
- 3:29Speaker 2: it's they're reminder for all people to be extra vigilent
- 3:31Speaker 2: along the beach this morning, in this afternoon, if they're
- 3:33Speaker 2: walking their dogs, if they do see a crocodile or
- 3:36Speaker 2: any they think might be a crocodile, please let us
- 3:38Speaker 2: know as thing as possible.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean I would assume that most people
- 3:41Speaker 1: don't let their kids sort of wait in that water
- 3:44Speaker 1: or anything anyway for the fear of crocodiles and also stingers.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But you know, anybody out there listening, do not let
- 3:51Speaker 1: your dog, yourself, anybody near that water.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's exactly right. Yeah, please stay out of the water
- 3:56Speaker 2: where possible. That's good advice.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Ian Hahn Wildlife Ranger, Thank you very much. For your
- 4:02Speaker 1: time this morning. I really appreciate you letting us know
- 4:05Speaker 1: and making all of our listeners aware of this situation.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Thank you, Statty, thank you,
