Latest / Foul Territory / Eno Sarris: Pitching tipping tech paranoia + Why to root for Brewers
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: You know, Sires a senior writer for the Athletic back
- 0:06Speaker 1: on foul territory with us pitching aficionado, analytics stuff, plus
- 0:11Speaker 1: the whole deal. Also listen to him on rates and barrels.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Really appreciate the time again. You know, it's great to
- 0:15Speaker 1: see you. And there's two key articles I want to
- 0:17Speaker 1: hit with you. So I'm actually going to start with
- 0:19Speaker 1: one put together by some of your colleagues on pitch
- 0:22Speaker 1: tipping and how much paranoia there is and how there
- 0:25Speaker 1: are a lot of MLB players really speaking publicly, I
- 0:28Speaker 1: think more than ever this year about it. So where
- 0:31Speaker 1: do you stand on where we're at as a sport
- 0:34Speaker 1: with pitch tipping taking over as a way to get
- 0:37Speaker 1: an edge.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen it the traditional way this year
- 0:41Speaker 2: with Hazes Lozardo kind of showing inside his glove and
- 0:46Speaker 2: having to figure out how to hold his glove, you know,
- 0:48Speaker 2: tighter to his body and have to make that adjustment.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I mean, that's totally above board. That's we've played baseball
- 0:55Speaker 2: that way forever. If you can see into the glove
- 0:57Speaker 2: and you can give a sign from second base, then
- 1:00Speaker 2: that's part of the game where I think that it
- 1:03Speaker 2: you know, this piece goes and talks about what's what's
- 1:06Speaker 2: uniquely challenging about the modern game is we have all
- 1:09Speaker 2: these technological ways to spot tips now, and so you
- 1:13Speaker 2: can run a player's biomechanics through the machine and the
- 1:17Speaker 2: machine can point out, oh, his elbow here or this
- 1:21Speaker 2: or that and kind of highlight places where their delivery
- 1:25Speaker 2: is different for different pitches. Then you can take that
- 1:27Speaker 2: back to the hitters meeting and say, can we see this?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Is this actionable? You know, the machines say this and
- 1:33Speaker 2: this and this. Then you can even take it to
- 1:36Speaker 2: the traject machine, which is this you know, new wave
- 1:39Speaker 2: pitching machine that really shows you the pictures delivery and
- 1:44Speaker 2: kind of gives you kind of a hologram almost of
- 1:46Speaker 2: the pictures delivery. And you can actually start to take
- 1:48Speaker 2: the tips to the pitching machine and practice them. So
- 1:51Speaker 2: now you can before the game, you know, the hitting
- 1:54Speaker 2: group can say, hey, you know, we think his elbow
- 1:57Speaker 2: does this on sliders.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Can you see it?
- 1:59Speaker 2: We'll throw on traject Oh yeah, I can see it.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I can see it. I can see it.
- 2:03Speaker 4: And this is.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Why Cody Bellinger says, sometimes I can't even unsee it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Once they tell me what the tip is so you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: the the this is part of the old school game
- 2:13Speaker 2: coming together with the new school tools, uh to make
- 2:16Speaker 2: it really difficult. But kind of came to a point
- 2:19Speaker 2: with Matt Strom on the on the on the mound
- 2:23Speaker 2: kind of showing into his glove and Andy pa Has,
- 2:27Speaker 2: you know, sticking his arm out. But after the game,
- 2:30Speaker 2: Andy pa Has says, well, you know, I wasn't giving
- 2:33Speaker 2: pitch type. I think what he was giving was pitch
- 2:35Speaker 2: location because he made that movement on two different pitch types,
- 2:40Speaker 2: as Strom pointed out on social media, but both pitches
- 2:44Speaker 2: were inside, so I think he was tipping location. The
- 2:47Speaker 2: catcher was tipping location by setting up early, and Pies
- 2:51Speaker 2: was relaying that. I think that's less I defer. I
- 2:55Speaker 2: want to defer to the hitters here on the panel,
- 2:57Speaker 2: but I would throw this to you guys. It's less
- 3:01Speaker 2: useful maybe to have location because pitchers missed their location.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It doesn't give you pitch type. How do you feel
- 3:06Speaker 2: about tipping location and would you want to know that
- 3:09Speaker 2: if you were a hitter at the plate.
- 3:13Speaker 5: Location is the key because I can take a guess
- 3:16Speaker 5: on what's coming depending on who's out there. Yeah, if
- 3:20Speaker 5: a guy gives me in and I'm facing a lefty,
- 3:24Speaker 5: I mean, I ain't getting a slider in and ain't
- 3:25Speaker 5: getting a breaking ball in. I'm getting a fastball or
- 3:27Speaker 5: change of ninety percent of the time for most lefties,
- 3:30Speaker 5: it's going to be a fastball in right so or
- 3:32Speaker 5: even if I'm facing a righty and they give me away,
- 3:34Speaker 5: they're not usually throwing a slider or something outside. They're
- 3:36Speaker 5: usually trying to backfoot it. To me, you got to
- 3:38Speaker 5: know yourself a little bit. So yeah, location location. To me,
- 3:41Speaker 5: the pitch type is fine and it helps you, but
- 3:44Speaker 5: you don't know where they're throwing it. But if you
- 3:45Speaker 5: can get a guy to tell you where to look,
- 3:47Speaker 5: that's a huge advantage.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I agree, but especially with the idea
- 3:54Speaker 2: that like, oh, this is probably hard. So that's probably
- 3:57Speaker 2: what task or thought process was inside. It's probably hard.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It's a one to zero count, I'm gonna gear I'm
- 4:03Speaker 2: gonna gear up for the fastball. And but the the
- 4:07Speaker 2: flip side of this in this this moment in particular,
- 4:10Speaker 2: was that Strom didn't execute. You know, the pitch wasn't good,
- 4:14Speaker 2: so it wasn't even where, it didn't even hit the target.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So but but it probably helped the oscar to some
- 4:20Speaker 2: degree to kind of you know, go think ahead and
- 4:23Speaker 2: be like, this is probably a fastball.
- 4:24Speaker 4: It's coming.
- 4:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:26Speaker 6: I got to ask you this because social media blows up.
- 4:29Speaker 6: There's people from right field saying, oh see, he's got this,
- 4:33Speaker 6: he's got this signe see and he's taken this. He's
- 4:35Speaker 6: taking his phone camera all the way from right field
- 4:40Speaker 6: and seeing like, oh see, how obvious it is. How
- 4:43Speaker 6: much do you feel like, as somebody and I'm not
- 4:47Speaker 6: saying this in any in any way defaming you, you
- 4:50Speaker 6: didn't play that. When you see something as demonstrative as
- 4:55Speaker 6: this or this, do you feel like it is actually
- 5:00Speaker 6: them having the sign? Or do you feel like teams
- 5:02Speaker 6: are now playing the cat and mouse game like look
- 5:05Speaker 6: at us, look at us.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Patrick Bailey admitted that earlier in this season. That's in
- 5:12Speaker 2: the piece from Anny McCully. He admitted that he was
- 5:14Speaker 2: just doing it to mess with the picture and now
- 5:17Speaker 2: the pictures like, what what do they got on me?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I'm in my head? And so yeah,
- 5:22Speaker 2: there's definitely some of that, and you know, I do
- 5:24Speaker 2: try to defer to people with play. That's why I
- 5:27Speaker 2: mentioned when the machines kind of kick something out. If
- 5:30Speaker 2: I was part of that, you know, hitting group that said, hey,
- 5:32Speaker 2: the machine say he does this with his elbow or something,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I would bring it to the hitters, not like this
- 5:37Speaker 2: is a tip and you guys have to act on.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I'd be like, can you see this? Is this something
- 5:41Speaker 2: that's useful to you? And ask them and and and
- 5:45Speaker 2: give them the opportunity to decide for themselves rather than
- 5:48Speaker 2: sort of tell them. I remember there was a tip
- 5:51Speaker 2: that was that somebody discovered on social media that they
- 5:54Speaker 2: were very sure about. It was Padre's picture, and I
- 5:57Speaker 2: forget what the tip was a better or so. It
- 5:59Speaker 2: was something about like his mouth before before he threw sliders,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and this person was very sure of it because he'd
- 6:06Speaker 2: shown that in these couple of days that like, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: he was he was he was doing this weird thing
- 6:11Speaker 2: with his mouth before sliders. But then I was like, okay,
- 6:14Speaker 2: let me just look at a random game and use
- 6:17Speaker 2: this idea. And I couldn't replicate it in a random game.
- 6:20Speaker 2: So maybe one day he was doing this weird thing
- 6:23Speaker 2: with his mouth, but that doesn't mean he does it
- 6:25Speaker 2: every time. So yeah, I think that the social media
- 6:29Speaker 2: aspect is interesting. I mean it's really exploded on social media.
- 6:32Speaker 2: It's like kind of the jamboification to some extent, where
- 6:35Speaker 2: like everyone's like, oh, I've got this figured out. You know,
- 6:38Speaker 2: he does he you know, he blows a bubble before
- 6:41Speaker 2: he throws every slider. You know, sometimes it's true and
- 6:43Speaker 2: sometimes it's not.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Ft fam. Another reason why you should love Arena Club
- 6:50Speaker 1: is the grading system. So you recently pulled a slap
- 6:53Speaker 1: pack and then you said, hey, it's not great. Great
- 6:57Speaker 1: it for me? They gave you an eight point five
- 6:58Speaker 1: out of ten on your Audi whitey Ford card, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: then they show you all the details of the grading system.
- 7:04Speaker 1: It's very interactive within the app, and then you're done.
- 7:07Speaker 1: If you want to sell the card or you want
- 7:09Speaker 1: to know what it's worth, you've got it.
- 7:10Speaker 4: It's like getting taken a school on cards. And I
- 7:12Speaker 4: think that's the coolest part of it. If you're young
- 7:14Speaker 4: or old, you understand, Hey, this is how it gets
- 7:17Speaker 4: deciphered all the way through. It shows you the numbers
- 7:19Speaker 4: and how they went through it. I think that's the
- 7:21Speaker 4: coolest part about this whole thing. And then you can
- 7:23Speaker 4: keep it traded or sealth or whatever you want.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And it's so much more efficient to do this through
- 7:29Speaker 1: Arena Club. Whether you're ripping a pack, there's the slab packs,
- 7:32Speaker 1: buying a card, selling a card, grading a card. It's
- 7:34Speaker 1: all there for you. We talk about it all season long.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Arena club dot com slash foul is where you can
- 7:40Speaker 1: go to give it a shot. Twenty percent off your
- 7:42Speaker 1: first card purchase. Arenaclub dot com slash foul. Use the
- 7:45Speaker 1: code foul at checkout and get twenty percent off.
- 7:48Speaker 3: You knows.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Here's a couple of things on what you just said. One,
- 7:50Speaker 5: if a guy was tipping, you had to get it early, okay,
- 7:52Speaker 5: It had to be before he picks up his leg
- 7:54Speaker 5: before he goes. Yes, you can get tips off mouths.
- 7:57Speaker 5: There was a bunch of guys that tip. You'll hunt.
- 7:59Speaker 5: Santana tiped to his mouth for a while, so he
- 8:01Speaker 5: started chewing gum. He would do different things, so, yes,
- 8:04Speaker 5: that was a real thing. Tyler Clipper did that with
- 8:07Speaker 5: his mouth. I hit a home er off on one
- 8:08Speaker 5: time because he would go on fastball, stick.
- 8:13Speaker 3: His tongue out on change up. But you could see it.
- 8:14Speaker 5: It was early, right, So those things matter. My question
- 8:18Speaker 5: is is okay? Patrick Bailey I know this, and I'm
- 8:21Speaker 5: not the old guy on my law and get off my.
- 8:23Speaker 6: Long guy at all.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I love the new age way to play. Well, why
- 8:27Speaker 3: doesn't anybody go out there?
- 8:28Speaker 5: And we've had this conversation on here before, Like Crawts
- 8:30Speaker 5: will tell you, if there was a guy we even
- 8:32Speaker 5: thought was given anything, Catcher would walk out.
- 8:34Speaker 3: To the mountain.
- 8:35Speaker 5: You act like you're picking up the rosenbag or talking
- 8:37Speaker 5: to your picture, and you're not even talking to your picture.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You're talking to the guy at second base and you say, hey.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Look, I don't know if you're giving anything or not,
- 8:43Speaker 5: but if you move on the next pitch, the guy
- 8:45Speaker 5: at the plate is gonna get one, okay. And the
- 8:47Speaker 5: easiest way to do is you go out your picture
- 8:49Speaker 5: and say all right, I'm gonna call Slider and you
- 8:52Speaker 5: throw it up and in and you watch the hitters reaction.
- 8:53Speaker 5: He'll tell you if the guy's given him location. Right,
- 8:56Speaker 5: But how come it isn't police differently? You know, we
- 8:58Speaker 5: got guys out there waving their hand, even if they're
- 9:00Speaker 5: just messing with the picture, they're making it so obvious
- 9:04Speaker 5: that it's like, how do we not police this better?
- 9:06Speaker 3: As a sport?
- 9:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I came up with Jazz a little bit.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Jazz was was showing off a tip against the Braves
- 9:15Speaker 2: and he kind of was like flapping his arms at
- 9:18Speaker 2: second base, and you know, the Braves coaching staff let
- 9:23Speaker 2: him have it, and it became an issue after the game.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And so to some extent, I think, you know, that
- 9:29Speaker 2: was some policing without having to hit Jazz, or at
- 9:32Speaker 2: least kind of making Jazz answer questions after the game
- 9:36Speaker 2: and kind of pointing out that he looked silly out there,
- 9:39Speaker 2: you know, flapping his arms around and stuff. But maybe
- 9:43Speaker 2: you know, Jazz hadn't planned it and he just spotted
- 9:45Speaker 2: a tip on the fly and he didn't know what
- 9:48Speaker 2: to do, so he just started flapping his arms, you know,
- 9:51Speaker 2: like I wasn't there for you know, the pregame meeting.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I doubt they were like, Jazz, if you get a tip,
- 9:56Speaker 2: flap your up the arms that have been down like
- 9:57Speaker 2: an eagle.
- 9:58Speaker 6: You know.
- 10:00Speaker 2: So I can't answer that one for you, because you know,
- 10:03Speaker 2: I haven't been in those shoes. But sometimes it looks ridiculous,
- 10:07Speaker 2: and you know, with the PA has thing, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 2: for him to say afterwards, I wasn't tipping, and he
- 10:13Speaker 2: wasn't like giving pitch types like he probably was trying
- 10:16Speaker 2: to convey some sort of information or getting someone's head.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So I don't know that he was completely truthful in
- 10:21Speaker 2: his comments afterwards either, But you know, nobody wants to
- 10:24Speaker 2: give it away an edge at this point this season, especially.
- 10:27Speaker 6: For sure, and every pitch matters. So if you get
- 10:30Speaker 6: something for one pitch, that could be what swings a
- 10:32Speaker 6: series and you go home or you stay there. Let's
- 10:36Speaker 6: talk about pitches. Let's talk about what she wrote about
- 10:40Speaker 6: starting or different pitchers leaning on pitches that they normally
- 10:44Speaker 6: didn't lean on throughout this postseason.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been pretty amazing. I looked it up even
- 10:50Speaker 2: show hire Tani.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Show here.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Tani in his start yesterday through more curveballs than he
- 10:55Speaker 2: had in any start ever except for one. So he
- 10:59Speaker 2: basically was like, hey, you guys, are your keyed in
- 11:01Speaker 2: on my splitter and my fastball? Here's the card ball.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Blake Snell threw more change ups than he ever had
- 11:07Speaker 2: in a start. As I pointed out, Uh, Schlitler went
- 11:10Speaker 2: to more sinkers. You know, there's also like they're changing
- 11:13Speaker 2: over time. Schlitzler was throwing more sinkers late in the season,
- 11:17Speaker 2: so that might just been more comfortable with the sinker.
- 11:20Speaker 2: But Nick Povetto was going to with two strikes, was
- 11:22Speaker 2: going to the fastball almost twice as much as he
- 11:24Speaker 2: did during the regular season. Schoobl had a ninety two
- 11:27Speaker 2: on our slider, so he went heavy on that. Matt
- 11:30Speaker 2: Boyd in his first start in the wild card threw
- 11:32Speaker 2: more changeups than fastballs. He you know, he didn't do
- 11:35Speaker 2: that all year. And it goes, you know, hand in
- 11:39Speaker 2: glove with another. You know, I love I love like
- 11:43Speaker 2: researching baseball because so many times old school stuff like
- 11:46Speaker 2: comes flips around and people accuse, Oh, the nerds just
- 11:50Speaker 2: figured out that, like having more pitch types is great.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, okay, But what really happened was we
- 11:56Speaker 2: went through all these different ways where we're like, oh, hey,
- 11:59Speaker 2: throw your best pitch most often. That's how you succeed,
- 12:02Speaker 2: you know, throw your fast one slider, Just throw those
- 12:05Speaker 2: most of the time if those are your best pitches.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But we've come back around now and the newest thing
- 12:11Speaker 2: in vogue is to throw lots of pitches. So pitches
- 12:13Speaker 2: have gone from pitchers have gone from throwing four uh
- 12:16Speaker 2: pitches pitches on average starting pitches. We're throwing four pitch
- 12:20Speaker 2: types on average four years ago. Now it's five, and
- 12:23Speaker 2: that's I know that's only one pitch, but that's a
- 12:25Speaker 2: kind of a big deal to go for the average
- 12:27Speaker 2: that much. So now the average pitcher is throwing five
- 12:29Speaker 2: pitch types. And what you can do if you throw
- 12:32Speaker 2: five pitch types? You come to October and you say,
- 12:35Speaker 2: here's that one pitch that you guys didn't prepare for
- 12:37Speaker 2: and I'm gonna throw the heck out of it.
- 12:38Speaker 3: I'm gonna throw a.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Ton of them and you're not gonna be ready for it.
- 12:42Speaker 2: So there's so much advanced scouting, there's so much thought
- 12:46Speaker 2: process going into so many meetings. So much of this
- 12:49Speaker 2: is like what do you do last time we saw them?
- 12:51Speaker 2: What do we do in the what do you do
- 12:52Speaker 2: in September? And if you can be like, oh, here's
- 12:54Speaker 2: this one thing I haven't done all year that I
- 12:56Speaker 2: saved for this moment, it seems to have worked really well,
- 12:59Speaker 2: and I think it's it's it's almost a troll job.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Pitchers are trolling the opposite offense right now by using
- 13:07Speaker 2: a pitch that they don't usually use.
- 13:08Speaker 6: A lot.
- 13:10Speaker 5: You know, I covered Schooble last night out in Seattle,
- 13:13Speaker 5: and you mentioned he wasn't throwing his change up, but
- 13:16Speaker 5: that was on purpose because they the Mariners hit his
- 13:19Speaker 5: change up.
- 13:20Speaker 3: So he tried to go away from it.
- 13:21Speaker 5: He still got a ton of outs with it last night,
- 13:23Speaker 5: and he gave up a homeer on a slider, so
- 13:24Speaker 5: maybe he should have gone to the change up, but
- 13:26Speaker 5: that was on purpose, right, And he still punched out nine,
- 13:29Speaker 5: walked one, and gave up like four hits and obviously
- 13:31Speaker 5: the two homers. But some of this is game planning
- 13:34Speaker 5: and some of it is, Hey, what did the Mariners
- 13:36Speaker 5: hit Againstchooble in the past, and.
- 13:38Speaker 3: They tried to go away from it.
- 13:39Speaker 5: But I'm going to tell you this right now, Terrek
- 13:41Speaker 5: Scouogle's change up is the number one valued pitch in
- 13:43Speaker 5: all of baseball.
- 13:44Speaker 3: You can't take that away. It's the best pitch in baseball.
- 13:47Speaker 3: You still got to throw it. I don't care what
- 13:48Speaker 3: this kind of reports.
- 13:49Speaker 5: So yes, you might lessen it a little bit trying
- 13:51Speaker 5: to do other things, but at the end of the day,
- 13:54Speaker 5: he still got to go with the pitcher strings.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a really interesting idea to talk about, because
- 13:59Speaker 2: even when you're talking about Nick Pavetta like flipping up
- 14:02Speaker 2: his fastball usage. So part of that was on curves
- 14:06Speaker 2: that move like pavettas the Cubs this year slugged seven
- 14:10Speaker 2: fifty and they saw the most pitches like that all
- 14:13Speaker 2: year in terms of movement and velocity. So yeah, to
- 14:16Speaker 2: some extent, he didn't want to get stuck using the
- 14:19Speaker 2: curveball in any predictive way, you know, in any predictable way,
- 14:22Speaker 2: because then they would they would hit it well, and
- 14:25Speaker 2: they'd shown that, so that was part of flipping over
- 14:27Speaker 2: to the fastball. Now they've also hit the fastball well.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But and he didn't stop using the curveball. To your point,
- 14:32Speaker 2: like it's not you know, he can't. He can't get
- 14:34Speaker 2: through a game without using the curveball. So there is
- 14:37Speaker 2: a tension between your strengths and the opponent's weaknesses. But
- 14:41Speaker 2: I just found it interesting that, like, you know, we
- 14:44Speaker 2: have these advanced scouting you know, plans where people are
- 14:48Speaker 2: like they're going to do this and this, and now
- 14:50Speaker 2: you know, there's being a big rise in self scouting.
- 14:53Speaker 2: So you know, I was first turned onto this where
- 14:55Speaker 2: a pitcher, a pitching coach was telling me every time
- 14:58Speaker 2: my pitchers faced the Dodger, it seems like they're totally
- 15:01Speaker 2: ready for our pitching plan. And he's like, I think
- 15:04Speaker 2: that they're just really good at self scouting. So they say,
- 15:07Speaker 2: how would I get Freddy Freeman out if I was
- 15:09Speaker 2: the opposing team? And now I go to Freddy and
- 15:11Speaker 2: I say, they're likely to do X, Y and Z
- 15:14Speaker 2: because I looked at your numbers and I put together
- 15:18Speaker 2: game plan on how to get you out. And so
- 15:20Speaker 2: Freddy can be like, and you can go to the
- 15:22Speaker 2: plate anticipating how they would get him out, So this
- 15:25Speaker 2: would be okay. Well, no one's advanced scouting my curveball, Shohatani.
- 15:30Speaker 2: They're thinking all about the slider and the splitter and
- 15:32Speaker 2: the fastball. So the curveball is a wrinkle that I
- 15:35Speaker 2: can bring into this game that they probably didn't do
- 15:38Speaker 2: a lot of scouting around all.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Right, last quick one here before September fourteenth, because Trey
- 15:44Speaker 6: Savage got called up on September fifteenth. Did anybody see
- 15:50Speaker 6: his stuff, his profile, his metrics as being as dominant
- 15:54Speaker 6: as he's shown, and if so, what heck did the
- 15:57Speaker 6: Jays not call him up before this?
- 16:01Speaker 2: You know? I think that's almost I think this fits
- 16:03Speaker 2: into our what we're talking about here. I think they
- 16:06Speaker 2: didn't want anyone to see him. I think they didn't
- 16:08Speaker 2: want I think this was their surprise, and one of
- 16:11Speaker 2: the first surprises I remember, Like this is Francisco Rodriguez
- 16:14Speaker 2: in two thousand and two being added to the postseason
- 16:17Speaker 2: roster and just blowing up the league. Man he had
- 16:20Speaker 2: one of the best postseasons of all time, and nobody
- 16:23Speaker 2: had seen him before, and it was electric, and nobody
- 16:27Speaker 2: had scouting reports. They hadn't stood in against him, and
- 16:29Speaker 2: it was obvious. So I think, to some extent, you
- 16:32Speaker 2: hide you Savage. The other part is, I mean the
- 16:35Speaker 2: stuff metrics always liked him. But what's interesting about your
- 16:38Speaker 2: Savage is it's so unique. I mean, he's a little
- 16:41Speaker 2: bit like Jonah Tong, He's a little bit like Jeremiah Strada.
- 16:44Speaker 2: These are very over the top, sixty degree arm angle
- 16:47Speaker 2: guys with a lot of ride on their fastball. The
- 16:50Speaker 2: thing that may see a Savage different is he throws
- 16:53Speaker 2: a slider with armside movement. There are only four pitchers
- 16:56Speaker 2: in baseball who throw armside movement sliders like that. Dory
- 17:00Speaker 2: Moretta is one of them. It's not a list of pitchers,
- 17:03Speaker 2: you know. But that's the thing that separates him is
- 17:07Speaker 2: first of all, it's extremely over the top, great ride,
- 17:10Speaker 2: good vlow, good command on the fastball, really good splitter.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And then there's just this weird slider you know, that's
- 17:16Speaker 2: like backup slider that doesn't look like anything else. So,
- 17:20Speaker 2: you know, I think he's just really strange. It's probably
- 17:23Speaker 2: really uncomfortable. Even if you went and sat in on
- 17:26Speaker 2: the traject I don't think that you get the full
- 17:28Speaker 2: feeling of somebody that has an extreme arm angle like this.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That's fallsy because you got to make the playoffs, got
- 17:33Speaker 1: to win the division, get the buye, do the whole thing.
- 17:35Speaker 1: So you want a guy up to win games. But hey,
- 17:38Speaker 1: now you got him, it's your secret weapon.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Go for it. You know.
- 17:40Speaker 1: This was great man. Really appreciate the time. Again, they
- 17:43Speaker 1: did talk about you Savage on Rates and Barrels months back.
- 17:46Speaker 3: That's how I found out about him.
- 17:48Speaker 1: And you can dial into his articles in The Athletic,
- 17:50Speaker 1: including the one that we were talking about. A lot
- 17:52Speaker 1: to get to there. You know, thank you, we'll talk soon.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Thanks for having me.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Our playoff coverage for the next few weeks is all
- 18:00Speaker 1: presented by Fox One shout out to them and the
- 18:03Speaker 1: new app and streaming service where you can get yourself
- 18:06Speaker 1: a seven day free trial at foxone dot com. So,
- 18:10Speaker 1: for example, if you're like, I don't have anything else,
- 18:13Speaker 1: but I want to watch the playoffs, then you can
- 18:16Speaker 1: watch AJ and Adam and Adam do their game, and
- 18:19Speaker 1: then eventually obviously the CS and the World Series as well.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Oh you Aj, We're gonna watch you even if we can't.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Right, we have another thought. We were in commercial. I
- 18:31Speaker 3: was like, well, I didn't realize this is live. I know, Sorry,
- 18:34Speaker 3: this is the commercial.
- 18:37Speaker 5: You get MLB obviously in the playoffs because Fox rules
- 18:40Speaker 5: MLB playoffs. I think you get Big Noon, which is
- 18:43Speaker 5: their big college football show. I don't know if you
- 18:45Speaker 5: can get the NFL on there, but yeah, you get games.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Oh well, then how do you not have Fox one?
- 18:50Speaker 5: I have Fox One. I watch it all the time.
- 18:52Speaker 5: I need to watch a game. People are complaining they
- 18:54Speaker 5: couldn't find the game. If you have Fox one, there
- 18:56Speaker 5: it is boom.
- 18:56Speaker 3: It's easy.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Pick your poison brand new series on FT. So your
- 19:08Speaker 1: team's not in it, who do you root for? We're
- 19:12Speaker 1: going to highlight certain franchises and talk more about the
- 19:16Speaker 1: organization and the people around them, and see if you're
- 19:19Speaker 1: going to buy into rooting for them. We're going to
- 19:21Speaker 1: start with the team that had the best record in
- 19:23Speaker 1: baseball this year and they have never put together a
- 19:26Speaker 1: World Series title, the Milwaukee Brewers. Aj why should some
- 19:32Speaker 1: rogue fans switch allegiances temporarily from a team that's not
- 19:37Speaker 1: in it and root for the Brewers the rest of
- 19:39Speaker 1: the way.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Think about this for a second, because their fun at
- 19:45Speaker 5: hell to watch, and the crowd is awesome, and they
- 19:47Speaker 5: have the craziest manager in the game, crazy like a fox, though,
- 19:50Speaker 5: and Pat Murphy says things, does things that are a
- 19:53Speaker 5: little bit off base, but his players get them, and
- 19:55Speaker 5: if you talk to him, he really knows baseball. Just
- 19:58Speaker 5: the way they play kind of an old school baseball.
- 20:01Speaker 5: And if you're into that, and you're into guys at
- 20:03Speaker 5: bunt and guys that take first the third, and guys
- 20:05Speaker 5: that can cover ground defensively and good pitching, then the
- 20:09Speaker 5: Brewers are your team. And one through nine that there
- 20:12Speaker 5: are some of parts over over stars, but for me,
- 20:16Speaker 5: they're just a fun team to watch, and Murph and
- 20:18Speaker 5: the way he handles it, did you guys see Murph
- 20:20Speaker 5: the other day when they scored like nine in the
- 20:22Speaker 5: first two, they showed him in the dugout and he
- 20:24Speaker 5: just had that little i hate to say this little
- 20:26Speaker 5: crap eat and grin where.
- 20:27Speaker 3: He was just like the first time ever.
- 20:30Speaker 5: You never see Murph smile during a game, but he
- 20:32Speaker 5: just had that little grin and then Craig councils over
- 20:34Speaker 5: in his dugout just stress. And so I just think
- 20:36Speaker 5: they're a fun team to watch, and Murph is great,
- 20:38Speaker 5: and you know, they got some gimmicks, but they make
- 20:41Speaker 5: them work.
- 20:43Speaker 6: I'm gonna say to follow this team because your team
- 20:46Speaker 6: is not in the playoffs. Pirates, Reds, your teams are
- 20:51Speaker 6: not in the playoffs right now. Cardinals, your teams are
- 20:54Speaker 6: not in the playoffs. If you're a small market, you
- 20:57Speaker 6: need to follow this team. And this is the team
- 21:00Speaker 6: should choose because their organization, year in year out, puts
- 21:05Speaker 6: a team out on the field that can win, and
- 21:08Speaker 6: then they get behind them as an organization and say, okay,
- 21:11Speaker 6: this is what you need, this is what you're good at,
- 21:14Speaker 6: and they get the most out of their players. They
- 21:16Speaker 6: don't make any more money than any of the other
- 21:19Speaker 6: small market teams. They're actually the smallest TV market in
- 21:23Speaker 6: baseball until Vegas comes into town. But that's the way
- 21:29Speaker 6: that you can get on board with this team. You
- 21:32Speaker 6: can get on board with how each of these guys
- 21:34Speaker 6: were not necessarily the first pick by other teams. You
- 21:37Speaker 6: can get on board with the fact that they got
- 21:40Speaker 6: the DFA bullpen. I guess it's not as much this year,
- 21:43Speaker 6: but it's a bunch of guys that have been put
- 21:45Speaker 6: together and they figured out how to win. Oh and
- 21:48Speaker 6: they figured out how to win more than everybody else
- 21:50Speaker 6: in Big League Baseball.
- 21:52Speaker 1: It's a great call. You know who I'm thinking about
- 21:55Speaker 1: too in the mix here, Christian Yelich did sign one
- 21:58Speaker 1: of those big boy contract. So if you're a fan
- 22:01Speaker 1: of a small market team and you're like, my team
- 22:04Speaker 1: won't sign up my dude for a long period of
- 22:07Speaker 1: time because my owner's complaining, then you look over at
- 22:10Speaker 1: Milwaukee and you say, successful, they win games, attendance, because
- 22:15Speaker 1: they win games enough money to sign a franchise player,
- 22:18Speaker 1: And that's Yelich coming over from another team.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:21Speaker 1: If you get somebody early on like Jackson Curio, who
- 22:24Speaker 1: already looks like a star player in our sport at
- 22:27Speaker 1: a very young age, then you can wrap them up
- 22:29Speaker 1: for a long period of time. I think the Brewers
- 22:32Speaker 1: make many other fan bases jealous. Aj they even make
- 22:36Speaker 1: big market owners very jealous. Why because then they turn
- 22:40Speaker 1: to their front office executives and say, how come they're
- 22:43Speaker 1: doing that with this and you guys get all the
- 22:46Speaker 1: resources and you can't beat them.
- 22:49Speaker 5: See David Stearns in the Mets at the present moment,
- 22:52Speaker 5: Steve going in to send out an apology letter after
- 22:54Speaker 5: they didn't make the postseason. By the way, it looks
- 22:56Speaker 5: like there's a lot of rooms buying me, it doesn't
- 22:57Speaker 5: it with all the doors and also, as Jeremy pointed out,
- 23:02Speaker 5: it is the best tailgate city in Major League Baseball.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I mean they get there.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Hours before the game and they have and if you
- 23:08Speaker 5: can just walk outside the stadium, you smell the brats
- 23:12Speaker 5: and everything grill burgers on the grill.
- 23:14Speaker 3: It is a great smell. So they also do that right.
- 23:17Speaker 5: And they have one of the best logos in the game.
- 23:20Speaker 5: And they have two mascots. They have Bernie Brewers Slide,
- 23:23Speaker 5: but barrel Man gets very underrated as a mascot. Let's
- 23:26Speaker 5: not forget barrel Man and what they do there.
- 23:31Speaker 6: I want to hit on Yelich because I played with
- 23:34Speaker 6: him the year he won the MVP and then they
- 23:37Speaker 6: locked him up after that. As a small market organization,
- 23:42Speaker 6: you have to you can't miss on these types of signings.
- 23:46Speaker 6: You can't miss when spending two hundred million dollars on
- 23:49Speaker 6: one player. So to me, it's all about how that
- 23:55Speaker 6: player is going to act when things are good and
- 23:57Speaker 6: when things are bad. And Christian Yelich couldn't be somebody
- 24:00Speaker 6: who is more every single day ready to prove that
- 24:05Speaker 6: this contract wasn't a fluke. It wasn't a fluke, wasn't
- 24:09Speaker 6: somebody something that he shouldn't have gotten. So when your
- 24:11Speaker 6: small market doesn't want to lock up a guy like
- 24:15Speaker 6: Christian Yelich, you're really you're losing so much value for
- 24:18Speaker 6: the organization. Yelly almost feels bad that he got the contract.
- 24:23Speaker 6: He knows he's a good player, but he almost feels
- 24:26Speaker 6: bad that he's getting paid this much and he wants
- 24:28Speaker 6: to go out every single day and prove it. When
- 24:30Speaker 6: he was hurt, he was like, the worst part is
- 24:33Speaker 6: that I'm not out there with the boys. When he
- 24:35Speaker 6: wasn't playing well, he was like, you know what, it's okay.
- 24:38Speaker 6: I'll turn it around because I'm out there every single
- 24:41Speaker 6: day and they can see that I'm not one hundred percent,
- 24:45Speaker 6: but it means more to be out there every day
- 24:48Speaker 6: and playing with the boys. And now he's fully healthy
- 24:52Speaker 6: or as fully healthy as Christian Yelich needs to be.
- 24:55Speaker 6: And he's a freaking lynchpin of that lineup right now,
- 24:58Speaker 6: and they all kind of follow suit behind him, and
- 25:02Speaker 6: they all he's that leader. That's not that you know,
- 25:05Speaker 6: maybe outward leader that some people think, but in that clubhouse,
- 25:09Speaker 6: he sets that tone and he sets that environment.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'll also give credit to the team for valuing their broadcasters.
- 25:19Speaker 1: They have some really good broadcast talent and they stick
- 25:22Speaker 1: around there clearly for a reason. Brian Anderson, Jeff Levering,
- 25:25Speaker 1: and the legend in a class of his own, Bob Buker,
- 25:28Speaker 1: who was a brilliant game caller, a brilliant ambassador of
- 25:32Speaker 1: our sport, funny as hell, and look, he spends a
- 25:35Speaker 1: good chunk of his life calling Milwaukee Brewer games.
- 25:38Speaker 3: So there is a lot.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I mean, if you haven't been to a game out there,
- 25:41Speaker 1: and I would definitely advise it's it's a really fun experience.
- 25:45Speaker 1: The people that you're around from a fan base perspective,
- 25:48Speaker 1: are special, so it makes sense. And it's not like
- 25:51Speaker 1: we're just you know, doing the Milwaukee Brewers kool aid
- 25:55Speaker 1: drinking session here right now. AJ We're going to do
- 25:57Speaker 1: this for some other teams as well. But I think
- 25:59Speaker 1: this is so the way to work at things.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Oh and they're easy to work with.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Mike Vasalo, their their PR guy is great, even though
- 26:05Speaker 5: he you know, he doesn't show up sometimes because he
- 26:07Speaker 5: had his appendix out, Like come on, Basalo be better
- 26:10Speaker 5: than that, right, But you forgot rock there. They're an
- 26:13Speaker 5: analysts who's there a lot. He's great to listen to.
- 26:16Speaker 5: There's just a lot of things that are good. Sophia
- 26:18Speaker 5: Menner and one of their other you know that that
- 26:20Speaker 5: translates for some of the Spanish Spanish players is awesome.
- 26:24Speaker 5: The people just are really nice when you walk through
- 26:26Speaker 5: the ballparking plus, I mean, I mean there is I'm
- 26:28Speaker 5: not quite on the crats, you know, full bandwagon with
- 26:31Speaker 5: the Brewers, but I will say this, I've got to
- 26:33Speaker 5: go down the slide, We've got to run in the
- 26:35Speaker 5: sausage race. It's it's a pretty cool place, Milwaukee and
- 26:39Speaker 5: the town.
- 26:40Speaker 3: It's sneaky good.
- 26:41Speaker 5: If you know where you're going, it is sneaky good.
- 26:43Speaker 5: I was there last weekend and they were having october Fest.
- 26:46Speaker 5: And let's just say there might have been some some
- 26:49Speaker 5: old beers thrown down by me.
- 26:52Speaker 1: They have a few of those out there in Milwaukee.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Yep. They got a lot of fests. They got a
- 26:57Speaker 3: lot of fests in Milwaukee. Concerts.
- 27:00Speaker 5: It's a sneaky great music scene too. Everybody goes to
- 27:03Speaker 5: Milwaukee to do their concert mm hmm.
- 27:05Speaker 3: That's true.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Sneaky sneaky good golf too, by the way, sneaky good.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Golf for a little longer and then and then no.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but I'm not there in the winner, so I
- 27:17Speaker 5: don't really care about this now.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah, they don't have a great football team. I'm not
- 27:22Speaker 3: a big fan of their football team. But the rest
- 27:24Speaker 3: of it.
- 27:27Speaker 1: If you like this segment, let us know in the comments,
- 27:29Speaker 1: and if you want us to bring up another team
- 27:31Speaker 1: in the postseason mix, then we can do that.
