- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. You're getting less bang for your buck
- 0:04Speaker 1: at the gas station this morning. Gas is up another
- 0:07Speaker 1: two point six cents, putting the price over two dollars
- 0:11Speaker 1: a leter in most areas. A bit of a break
- 0:14Speaker 1: for those who rely on diesel as prices on the
- 0:16Speaker 1: island have been lowered by three point two cents and
- 0:20Speaker 1: two and a half cents in Labrador West for a
- 0:23Speaker 1: soil decreases by about two point seven cents, while stove
- 0:27Speaker 1: oil is down by almost two cents. There's little to
- 0:31Speaker 1: no change in the price of propane. A twenty nine
- 0:35Speaker 1: year old woman has been charged with resisting arrest and
- 0:38Speaker 1: assaulting a police officer after a recent incident in Happy Valley.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Goose Bay. Police responded to reports of an unwonted person
- 0:46Speaker 1: making threats at a home in the community around eight
- 0:48Speaker 1: o'clock Wednesday evening. Police located the woman nearby. She reportedly
- 0:52Speaker 1: refused to comply with the officer's demands and physically assaulted
- 0:56Speaker 1: an officer. The accused is facing three counts of assault
- 1:00Speaker 1: a police officer and one count of resisting arrest. The
- 1:04Speaker 1: federal government has announced six hundred and seven million dollars
- 1:08Speaker 1: for a national action Plan to end gender base violence.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Federal Minister Rishie Valdez made the announcement yesterday along with
- 1:16Speaker 1: her provincial counterparts, including an L Minister Leela Evans. Evans
- 1:21Speaker 1: says she expects this province to receive thirteen million dollars
- 1:25Speaker 1: based on the last round of funding and hopes to
- 1:27Speaker 1: use that money to support programs across the province.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Do we have a lot of programming in place that
- 1:33Speaker 2: we want to be able to continue to support and
- 1:37Speaker 2: also too, is we actually as part of our declaration
- 1:41Speaker 2: of gender based violence as an epidemic, we do have
- 1:44Speaker 2: this task force has just started and we want the
- 1:48Speaker 2: task force to work to identify the supports the programming
- 1:55Speaker 2: that we as a province needs to put in place.
- 1:58Speaker 1: The federal government also announced seven hundred thousand dollars to
- 2:02Speaker 1: support a crisis support hotline. The provincial government says it's
- 2:07Speaker 1: spending some thirty one million dollars to build three hundred
- 2:10Speaker 1: and forty four new affordable rental units. Government made the
- 2:14Speaker 1: announcement yesterday, saying the units will be built at thirty
- 2:17Speaker 1: three sites across the province, with some of the funding
- 2:20Speaker 1: coming from an unrealistic project back in twenty twenty three.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Housing Minister Jody Wall says the units will be through
- 2:27Speaker 1: NL Housing and will be built in eighteen to thirty months.
- 2:31Speaker 3: So we have some units that based on forty two
- 2:34Speaker 3: thousand or less, we have some based on thirty eight
- 2:36Speaker 3: thousand or less. So this is this is important for
- 2:39Speaker 3: the people to province for the families who are working
- 2:43Speaker 3: struggling at times. This this will certainly give them that
- 2:47Speaker 3: hope and optimism that these new units will be available
- 2:49Speaker 3: and for that in that price range.
- 2:52Speaker 1: A family from Boat Harbor on the Buren Peninsula have
- 2:55Speaker 1: a couple of local cabin owners to thank after running
- 2:58Speaker 1: into trouble while on a recent excursion in the Long
- 3:01Speaker 1: Harbor area. Brad Dente's wife Laura slipped on a rock
- 3:04Speaker 1: and broke her leg as the family set up to
- 3:07Speaker 1: have a lunch near the local swimming hole and waterfall.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Dentee's son sought help at a local cabin, but they
- 3:13Speaker 1: still needed to get Laura out of the area in
- 3:15Speaker 1: order for first responders to reach her. He says, local
- 3:18Speaker 1: cabin owners couldn't do enough to help keep Laura comfortable.
- 3:22Speaker 4: And we got blankets and the restore he had back
- 3:25Speaker 4: against the cliffs. One of the gentlemen who he's eighty seven,
- 3:28Speaker 4: he left me, went to his dabin and got a
- 3:30Speaker 4: pan and we put the when we filled it with
- 3:32Speaker 4: water and kip filling and then towels and everything, put
- 3:35Speaker 4: on her leg and put her foot into the pan
- 3:37Speaker 4: of water and at Detroit to keep her because, like
- 3:39Speaker 4: I say, our biggest fear was that she was going
- 3:41Speaker 4: to pass out or our shacking, and so we knew
- 3:45Speaker 4: we had to get her red to sawn her because
- 3:47Speaker 4: we're all we're all dying with the heat.
- 3:49Speaker 1: They're dead anyway, he says. They managed to get her
- 3:51Speaker 1: across the water and a rubber dinghy supplied by another
- 3:54Speaker 1: cabin owner, which they fashioned into a stretcher. Once they
- 3:57Speaker 1: got to the other side.
- 3:58Speaker 4: One of them actually actually walked across the pool. Was
- 4:02Speaker 4: about probably fight for the ladder there, and after we
- 4:05Speaker 4: gather into Robert Inky, one of the gentlemen actually walked
- 4:08Speaker 4: across the pool with her gun and the Robert Ink
- 4:11Speaker 4: herass to the other side where the rest of the
- 4:14Speaker 4: scaffold and got her all. Obviously, it turned out to
- 4:16Speaker 4: be a great stretcher actually, because otherwise I don't know
- 4:19Speaker 4: how he would have got her across the.
- 4:20Speaker 1: List that was there, so, he says, by the time
- 4:23Speaker 1: they got to the road near English Harbor, the ambulance
- 4:25Speaker 1: had not yet arrived, and they decided to put his
- 4:27Speaker 1: wife in the RCMP cruiser for transport to the highway,
- 4:31Speaker 1: where an ambulance showed up to take her to hospital
- 4:33Speaker 1: in Clarenville. She was later transferred to Saint John's for
- 4:36Speaker 1: follow up treatment. Dente calls the people who came out
- 4:39Speaker 1: to help angels. Prime Minister Mark Kearney says Canada will
- 4:44Speaker 1: share the Gordy Howbridge's net toll revenue with the US
- 4:47Speaker 1: for the first fifteen years, but only after operating costs
- 4:51Speaker 1: are deducted. Carney says those net revenues are expected to
- 4:54Speaker 1: be minimal or even negative in the early years as
- 4:58Speaker 1: traffic builds. After the fifteen year arrangement ends, Canada will
- 5:02Speaker 1: keep all toll revenue until the bridge's full construction debt
- 5:05Speaker 1: is repaid, after which revenue will be shared with Michigan
- 5:09Speaker 1: under the original agreement. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
