Transcript
- 0:08Good morning, family. How are you guys doing?
- 0:13Turn to 2 Timothy chapter 4. We will finish this
- 0:17letter today after we do the reading. Yep. Just
- 0:21getting ready. Thank you. All right. I will read
- 0:25a question. Heidelberg Catechism, you will read
- 0:27the answer. Question number 52. How does Christ
- 0:31return to judge the living and the dead comfort
- 0:34you? In all distress and persecution with an
- 0:39uplifted head, I confidently await the very judge
- 0:43who has already offered himself to the judgment
- 0:47of God in my place and remove the whole curse
- 0:51from me. Christ will cast... all his enemies
- 0:55and mine into everlasting condemnation, but will
- 1:00take me and all of his chosen ones to himself
- 1:04into joy and the glory of heaven. Amen. Isn't
- 1:09that beautiful? I don't know, that gives me comfort.
- 1:15So let's pray and we'll get started. Father,
- 1:17I want to thank you so much for your goodness.
- 1:18Thank you, Lord, for your word. Thank you for
- 1:20this wonderful letter. I pray, Lord, as we go
- 1:23through this, a letter of 2 Timothy chapter 4,
- 1:26that we really see the emphasis on the Word of
- 1:30God. that the truth of God prevails, and that
- 1:33we are responsible to be a steward and a caregiver
- 1:36of that word, and to proclaim the word in the
- 1:39gospel in season and out of season, Lord, and
- 1:43that we stand firm on the rock of Christ, the
- 1:46sureness of our salvation. Lord, we do praise
- 1:49you and thank you for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 1:51May the full counsel of your word be spoken.
- 1:53Help us to rightly divide it for your glory.
- 1:55In Jesus' name, amen. So we do have several new
- 1:59people. We are an expository church. We preach
- 2:02verse by verse. You will see that. Even though
- 2:05I'll be summarizing this chapter, we will go
- 2:07through every verse. I will not give you all
- 2:09the information because if I did, I'd run out
- 2:12of things to preach, and I want to go back eventually
- 2:14in a couple years to these letters, hopefully.
- 2:18So we have a lot to look forward to, and we have
- 2:20a lot to look forward to through the Word. So
- 2:21let's get started. I charge you in the presence
- 2:24of God, chapter 4, verse 1. and of Christ Jesus,
- 2:28who is to judge the living and the dead, and
- 2:31by his appearing and his kingdom. Preach the
- 2:34word. Be ready in season and out of season. Reprove,
- 2:38rebuke, and exhort with complete patience and
- 2:41teaching. For the time is coming when people
- 2:44will not endure sound teaching and have itching
- 2:48ears that will accumulate for themselves teachers
- 2:50to suit their own passions and will turn away
- 2:53from listening to the truth and wander off into
- 2:56myths. As for you, always be sober -minded. Endure
- 3:01suffering. Do the work of an evangelist. Fulfill
- 3:04your ministry. For I am already being poured
- 3:08out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure
- 3:11has come. I have fought the good fight. I have
- 3:14finished the race. I have kept the faith. Henceforth
- 3:18there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,
- 3:21which the Lord, the righteous judge, will reward
- 3:24to me on that day, and not only to me, but also
- 3:29to all who loved his appearing. Do your best
- 3:33to come to me soon. For Demas, in love with this
- 3:37present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.
- 3:42Cretans has gone to Galatia. Titus to Damasia
- 3:47is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you,
- 3:52for he is very useful to me for the ministry.
- 3:56Tychicus, I have sent to Ephesus. When you come,
- 4:01Bring the cloak that I have left with Carpus
- 4:04at Troas, also the books and above all the parchments.
- 4:11Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm.
- 4:14The Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
- 4:17Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposes
- 4:20our message. At my first defense, no one came
- 4:24to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not
- 4:29be charged against them. But the Lord stood by
- 4:32me and strengthened me so that through me the
- 4:36message might be fully proclaimed and all the
- 4:40Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from
- 4:44the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from
- 4:47every evil deed and bring me safely into his
- 4:50heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and
- 4:53ever. Amen. Prisca and Aquila and the household
- 4:58of Onesiphorus. Eretus remained in Corinth, and
- 5:03I left Tromfimus at Maltus. Do your best to come
- 5:10before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you,
- 5:14as do Pudens and Linus, Claudia, and all the
- 5:18brothers. The Lord be with your spirit. Grace.
- 5:21be with you. Today's message is still on biblical
- 5:24manhood and biblical womanhood. I want the men,
- 5:26specifically all believers, but specifically
- 5:29men, pay attention to how Paul talks to Timothy
- 5:32here. Living by the truth in the days of apostasy
- 5:39is the message. Principle number one, God's people
- 5:42must always be ready to proclaim the gospel to
- 5:45anyone and everyone. So some very important things
- 6:07I want you to pay attention to in verse 1 and
- 6:092. The first is the word charge. I charge. I
- 6:12earnestly call you Timothy. This is a earnest
- 6:17call to Timothy in the presence of God and of
- 6:21Christ Jesus. This word presence is not that
- 6:24he's just here, even though he's here. This word
- 6:26presence means by the authority of. So look at
- 6:30here from this perspective. I earnestly call
- 6:33you by the authority of God and of Christ Jesus,
- 6:37who is to judge the living and the dead by his
- 6:41appearing and his kingdom. This is what you need
- 6:44to do. The charge is to preach. The charge is
- 6:47to reprove. The charge is to rebuke. You'll see
- 6:50this. I charge you. I earnestly call you by the
- 6:53authority of God to do these things. Preach.
- 6:57Keruso. Keruso means to proclaim. Proclaim what?
- 7:00The word, the logos. What are you to proclaim?
- 7:03The gospel. The gospel in its entirety. Your
- 7:06responsibility is to preach the full counsel
- 7:08of God's word, specifically the full counsel
- 7:11of the gospel of God. It isn't. It isn't, and
- 7:14I'm going to call names out because I've been
- 7:16on a soapbox since I started preaching this morning.
- 7:18So I'm going to be on a soapbox. I'm warning
- 7:21you, okay? It is not Rick Warren. Say this prayer.
- 7:26Welcome to the family. Saying a prayer doesn't
- 7:29get you in heaven. Your prayer doesn't get you
- 7:31there. It's the work alone in Christ alone by
- 7:34the blood of Christ alone through the cross alone,
- 7:37which is by the scripture alone that gets you
- 7:39there. Christ alone gets you there. I want you
- 7:42to get that. Okay? That's important. So when
- 7:45we preach, we preach the full counsel of the
- 7:47word of God. What is the gospel? You guys know.
- 7:49We've been talking about it. What's the gospel?
- 7:51Christ? Crucified? Buried? There you go. Let's
- 7:58go, you guys. All right. That's the gospel. Full
- 8:02gospel. And God, Christ, calls all to repent
- 8:06and believe the gospel. Notice, repentance is
- 8:10a necessity. Repentance is a turning to God away
- 8:14from sin. It's not just the changing of the mind.
- 8:17It's a total regeneration, transformation, renewal
- 8:20in the life and the heart of the individual.
- 8:22And only the Holy Spirit can do that. We know
- 8:26that through the regeneration work of God, takes
- 8:29a dead person, makes them alive through the preaching
- 8:33of the gospel by which faith is planted into
- 8:36the person. The Holy Spirit regenerates that
- 8:39faith into the life of the believer, into the
- 8:42life of the person. That dead person becomes
- 8:44alive and they say, happy birthday. Jesus is
- 8:49Lord. Happy birthday. You'll get it. It's Frosty
- 8:53the Snowman. I said this at Christmas. If you
- 8:55ever watch Frosty the Snowman, I told you I'm
- 8:58convinced it is a Christian cartoon. He puts
- 9:01a hat on, and what's he say? Happy birthday.
- 9:03He's dead, and now he's alive. Okay? So I want
- 9:07you to pay attention to that. And the other thing
- 9:09I want you to notice is he puts on a hat. He
- 9:10puts on the helmet of salvation. I'm just saying.
- 9:14I'm just saying. Okay. So pay attention. Here
- 9:18we go. So you preach the word, he says. Don't
- 9:22just earnestly call by the authority of God to
- 9:25preach the word. Teach the full counsel of the
- 9:29word of God to your families, men. Your responsibility
- 9:34is to prove that what I'm teaching is true. The
- 9:37problem in churches today is they have preachers
- 9:40that sit behind pulpits, tell people what they
- 9:42want to hear. The people go, well, it's got to
- 9:45be the final authority of the word of God because
- 9:46the preacher said it. They don't go home and
- 9:49test the word through the word to determine if
- 9:51that was true. They believe it, and immediately
- 9:54churches explode into this massive growth, and
- 9:58they fill you full of fluffy. No, your job as
- 10:02man is to listen to the preacher, teacher, take
- 10:04what the preacher, teacher has said, verify that,
- 10:08and instill it, if it's true, into your family.
- 10:12If it's not true, instill the word, because that's
- 10:14what you're doing. If the preacher's preaching
- 10:16the word, he's preaching the word in its entirety,
- 10:18and it's sound, you're preaching and teaching
- 10:21the word to your family. Okay? And for the ladies,
- 10:26if there's not a man in the home, your support
- 10:29is the church. Okay? We have pastors and elders
- 10:32to help you do that. Very important. Preach.
- 10:34Preach the word. Every single morning. One of
- 10:37the things I didn't mention in first service
- 10:39that I'll mention now is preach the word to yourself.
- 10:43The gospel. Love the gospel. There is nothing
- 10:47greater on the planet than the gospel and King
- 10:51Jesus, the one who has given us his gospel. Be
- 10:55ready in season. This word, be ready in season,
- 10:58means when the opportunity arises. Example, Jesus
- 11:03sends them out two by two. What do they do? They
- 11:06knock on the door. Jesus says, if you knock on
- 11:08the door and a man of peace answers and he lets
- 11:11you in, stay as long as they allow you. And when
- 11:15your welcome is done, leave and go on to the
- 11:19next house. If you knock on the door and there's
- 11:21not a person of peace and they reject you, wipe
- 11:24the dust off your feet and go to the next person.
- 11:27That's what this means here. When the opportunity
- 11:29arises, there should be people of peace when
- 11:32you go to preach the gospel and tell someone
- 11:34about Jesus that they're going to want to hear
- 11:36it. If they want to hear it, your opportunity
- 11:38is there. But there's one more. It's the out
- 11:42of season. Be ready in season and out of season.
- 11:45Out of season means when there is no opportunities.
- 11:49In other words, you should be preaching the gospel
- 11:51to every creature, even when there isn't an opportunity.
- 11:55Even when you knock on the door and the person
- 11:57of peace doesn't want to hear it, and you go,
- 11:58you know, Jesus loves you, and if you die in
- 12:00your sin, you're going to go to hell, and he
- 12:02died on the cross, was buried, rose again on
- 12:04the third day to give you life. Sorry, I don't
- 12:07want any. No, it's not Jehovah's Witness. It's
- 12:09okay. The point is that we preach when we have
- 12:13the opportunities, and we preach even when. How
- 12:18do we preach? Why should we preach? Well, we
- 12:20preach for the purpose of reproving. We have
- 12:24been charged by the authority of God to preach
- 12:27and to reprove. Reprove means to reprehend severely.
- 12:33How about in the church? Can you think about
- 12:35that? So the scripture says in Corinthians that
- 12:39are we to judge those outside of the church?
- 12:44Most people say, no, thou shall not judge. For
- 12:47the measure by which you judge, you shall be
- 12:49judged. Take the log out of your own eye before
- 12:53you judge the speck in your brother's eye. But
- 12:55you know the Bible says that we are to judge
- 12:58those in the church. It's right here. And it's
- 13:00in 1 Corinthians chapter 4. 1 Corinthians chapter
- 13:044, reprove. How can I reprehend you severely
- 13:08for your junk, for your trash, for your sin,
- 13:11if I have to worry about you thinking that I'm
- 13:15being judgmental? Will iron sharpen iron? No.
- 13:20We must reprove, especially as elders. That's
- 13:24why we must walk circumspect. We don't go in.
- 13:30condemning and beating, we come in with patience
- 13:33and teaching. So we reprove, we reprehend severely,
- 13:38and we admonish. The second, rebuke, censure
- 13:41severely, and assign fault. That's why we have
- 13:46church discipline. Church discipline not only
- 13:48assigns fault, but removes the unrepentant, deals
- 13:51with the unrepentant, or severely censures the
- 13:56unrepentant. limits the amount of activity that
- 14:00person has within the body because they're not
- 14:03willing to align themselves with Christ. It's
- 14:06hard. The third, exhort, means to urge, admonish,
- 14:10warn, and advise. Isn't that interesting? So
- 14:14God has called us, earnestly called us, and has
- 14:18given us authority by his own purpose and plan
- 14:22to preach, to reprove, to rebuke, and to exhort.
- 14:27How should we, as men, do these things? And as
- 14:31women of God do these things, we must do it with
- 14:34complete, in all manner, patience. This word
- 14:38patience means forbearance and teaching. We don't
- 14:41just do this because we think we have authority.
- 14:47The only thing that can change the heart of any
- 14:50and every individual is the word. Not your way,
- 14:54not what you think, not what you demand. What
- 14:56the word of God says, the word of God becomes
- 14:59the teacher, as Paul states. We also know that
- 15:03because he states it in Timothy, 1 Timothy, 2
- 15:07Timothy, sorry, chapter 1. Look what it says.
- 15:10Chapter 1, verse 13 and 14. the good deposit
- 15:25entrusted to you. Pay attention. It's the word
- 15:30of God that matters, okay? Patience and teachings,
- 15:33forbearance and teaching. Look what it says here,
- 15:362 Timothy 2, verse 1 and 2. And then, my child,
- 15:41be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ
- 15:43Jesus and what you have heard from me in the
- 15:47presence of many witnesses. Entrust to faithful
- 15:51men who will be able to teach others also. You're
- 15:56starting to hear a common theme here, aren't
- 15:59you? Chapter 3, verse 13 through 17. On from
- 16:06bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But
- 16:08as for you, continue in what you have learned
- 16:11and have firmly believed, knowing from who you
- 16:15learned it. and how from childhood you have been
- 16:19acquainted with the sacred writings which are
- 16:23able to make you wise for salvation through faith
- 16:26in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out
- 16:31by God and is profitable for... teaching, reproof,
- 16:36correction, and training in righteousness, that
- 16:39the man of God may be complete, equipped for
- 16:43every good work. What is the common theme here
- 16:46in all four chapters? The Word of God. I can
- 16:53preach and teach all day long, but if you don't
- 16:56go home and allow the Word of God to do the work
- 16:59in your life, you will not change. You guys should
- 17:05know that. I've asked you guys to memorize it.
- 17:07If you haven't memorized it, please memorize
- 17:09it. It's one of the main verses I memorized when
- 17:11I first got saved. Therefore, I urge you, brothers,
- 17:14in the view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies
- 17:16as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing unto
- 17:19God, for this is your reasonable act of worship.
- 17:22And do not be conformed to the pattern of this
- 17:25world, but be transformed by the renewing of
- 17:28your minds so you can test and approve what God's
- 17:31will is, His good, pleasing, and perfect will.
- 17:33And there is only one place to find His will.
- 17:39It's not with those false... That call themselves
- 17:41pastors tell you the will and purpose of God
- 17:45is here. You don't have to go discover it. God
- 17:47didn't create your own purpose for you. Your
- 17:50job is not your purpose. Jesus is your purpose.
- 17:53Proclaim Christ where you're at. That's the important
- 17:56part. Whatever you do, whatever you do, it's
- 17:58Christ is your purpose. Now, second principle.
- 18:02God's people hold to sound doctrine and to stand
- 18:06solely on the rock of truth. Ephesians 4, 13
- 18:09through 14. until we attain the unity of the
- 18:12faith and the knowledge of the Son of God to
- 18:16mature manhood to the measure and stature of
- 18:19the fullness of Christ so that we may no longer
- 18:22be tossed to and fro by ways and carried about
- 18:26by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning and
- 18:30by craftiness and deceitful schemes. Why? Look
- 18:33what it says in verse 3 and 4 of 2 Timothy 4.
- 18:37For the time is coming. The time is when people
- 18:43will not endure. People will not bear. They will
- 18:48not tolerate sound teaching. They will not tolerate
- 18:52the inerrant truth and doctrine of God. We are
- 18:57now. We have people that are teaching and preaching,
- 19:00and we have things going on in our society that
- 19:03are antithetical in every way to Christ and his
- 19:07gospel and his word. Not every preacher that
- 19:11you see on TV is good. I'm about to offend some
- 19:15older folks, maybe some younger ones. So I'm
- 19:18going to give you one. You guys are going to
- 19:19be shocked. Let's deal with this issue. They
- 19:22will not tolerate sound teaching, but having
- 19:25itching ears, they will accumulate, they will
- 19:28heap up, they will accumulate in piles. Teachers
- 19:33to suit their own passions, their own desires
- 19:36that are forbidden, their own lusts, and will
- 19:39turn away from listening to the truth and wander
- 19:42off, go astray into myths, into fictions, into
- 19:47fables, into imaginations, and into dispensationalism.
- 19:54Why? Because it doesn't teach the sovereignty
- 19:57of Christ. It doesn't teach the kingship of Jesus.
- 20:01It teaches the kingship of you. While you're
- 20:04busy looking at the world events, you're not
- 20:07looking up, as Paul states. We loved his appearing.
- 20:13While you're busy looking at whether the mark
- 20:15of the beast is coming or whether Israel's built
- 20:18a temple or you're busy looking at whether...
- 20:21Israel owns the land of Israel. You're not busy
- 20:25looking for Jesus. It takes your focus off the
- 20:30king and puts your focus on you. Why? Because
- 20:33you want to escape what's coming. God has promised
- 20:37we will escape that. So why are we so focused
- 20:39on escaping it? Why are we so intent of getting
- 20:42ready when the only thing we should be ready
- 20:45on is the earnest call of the believer to preach
- 20:48the word? Now here's my, I had a particular individual
- 20:52I talked about today. I know some of you probably
- 20:54watch him and you feel like he was a good teacher
- 20:57and I felt he was pretty okay. But it's at a
- 21:00level where it's ridiculous. David Jeremiah.
- 21:03He makes millions off of selling the end times
- 21:06to you. It's enough. My call to him is to preach
- 21:12the gospel, David. Preach the full counsel of
- 21:15the word of God, which you've done in the past,
- 21:17which you're not doing now. You're too focused
- 21:19on what you think is happening in the world.
- 21:22The people of God, if they're preaching the full
- 21:24counsel of God's word, focused on the gospel,
- 21:27are ready for his return. Stop trying to get
- 21:29people ready. You get people ready by preaching
- 21:32the gospel and getting them to do the work of
- 21:35the ministry. How do we know that? What does
- 21:38Jesus say? We're going to see that next. What
- 21:41does Jesus say? Be ready. How are we ready? Do
- 21:45the work of an evangelist, he says. Isn't that
- 21:47what he just said? Do the work of an evangelist.
- 21:50Preach the gospel. He doesn't say, hey, get ready
- 21:52for Jesus' return. I'm looking up as I'm working
- 21:56out. That's the idea here. Third principle. God's
- 22:00people work with all diligence not to be found
- 22:04idle when our Lord returns, eagerly watching
- 22:07and serving. Until that great day. That's what
- 22:13you need to be doing. That's your purpose. That's
- 22:17the purpose and plan. One purpose, one plan.
- 22:19Whether you work in construction. One God. One
- 22:22faith. One baptism. One way. The gospel. Christ.
- 22:26That's your purpose. Whether you do art. Whatever
- 22:32you do. The gospel. Christ. That's it. Whether
- 22:35you're an electrician. Whether you work at a
- 22:37donut shop. The gospel, a bank, the gospel. Everywhere
- 22:41you go, it's Christ and him crucified. Do the
- 22:44work of an evangelist. Look what he says here.
- 22:47Luke chapter 12, verse 43. Blessed is the servant.
- 22:52Blessed is that servant whom his master will
- 22:55find so doing when he comes. 2 Timothy 3, 5 through
- 23:008. As for you, Timothy. Always is the term in
- 23:05the ESV. Empos, meaning in all circumstances,
- 23:09in all things, in all ways, all the time. Be
- 23:14sober -minded. Be circumspect. Be clear -headed.
- 23:18Young men, be circumspect. Clear -headed. Focus
- 23:23on the goal that is set before you. Run the race.
- 23:26Run it hard. Don't stop running. Endure suffering.
- 23:32I want you to notice that. He doesn't say you're
- 23:35going to have your best life now. He doesn't
- 23:37say that God doesn't want you to suffer. God
- 23:39wants you to suffer. Godliness. Suffer produces
- 23:41endurance. Endurance produces patience. Patience
- 23:44produces character. Character produces integrity.
- 23:50Look, endure suffering. You cannot be an evangelist
- 23:54if you're not suffering. People must be comfortable
- 23:58with the gospel preach. Do the work of an evangelist.
- 24:02Fulfill. Bring to bear. Make full your ministry.
- 24:06Hear that, Owen. That is your focus, okay? For
- 24:13I am already being poured out as a drink offering,
- 24:17and the time of my departure has come. Paul realizes
- 24:21I am going to die, and my work is finished. I'm
- 24:26done. Look at his attitude. It's beautiful. Many
- 24:30preachers preach on this, but I want you to hear
- 24:32why Paul states it the way he does. I have fought.
- 24:36I have struggled with difficulty and danger.
- 24:40What has he struggled with difficulty and danger?
- 24:43The good fight. The praiseworthy contest. Do
- 24:47you guys know that the Christian life is a praiseworthy
- 24:49contest? It's a praiseworthy race. Win, run as
- 24:55if you are going to win the prize because you
- 24:58will. Christ is your prize. Look what it says
- 25:01here. I have finished. My race, my praiseworthy
- 25:06contest has come to a close. The race, the course
- 25:10of life, I have kept the faith. How many of you
- 25:13guys thought about that? Your life literally
- 25:15is a race, a course of life. You're literally
- 25:18on the running course of life in everything that
- 25:23comes with it. Then look, henceforth, meaning
- 25:26the future, in the future, there is laid up,
- 25:30there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness.
- 25:33Isn't that nice? And what's amazing is I get
- 25:36to take this wonderful, beautiful crown of righteousness
- 25:39and lay it at the feet of Christ and say, no,
- 25:42you are my righteousness. What a beautiful picture.
- 25:47Notice, it's the Lord, the righteous judge. That
- 25:52will reward it to me on that day is what he says.
- 25:55Christ, when you're done and you ran the race,
- 25:58he will take that crown and lay it before you.
- 26:01And you will in love and adoration and worship
- 26:05lay it before his feet and say, no, you're my
- 26:08righteousness. You deserve the glory and the
- 26:12praise and gratitude. Look at verse 1. What day
- 26:17is he talking about? Verse 1, chapter 4, verse
- 26:201. I charge you in the presence of God and of
- 26:23Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and
- 26:26the dead by his appearing and his kingdom. That
- 26:31day is what Paul's talking about. What day? Revelation
- 26:3520. There is only one judgment seat. There's
- 26:40not the Bema seat, as the dispensationalists
- 26:42teach, for the righteous of God. And then there's
- 26:46not the throne judgment for the wicked. Read
- 26:50Revelation 20. Look what it says here. And the
- 26:53sea gave up the dead that were in it. And death
- 26:56and Hades gave up the dead that were in them.
- 26:58And they were judged, each one according to what
- 27:01he has done. Let's go up a little bit. Verse
- 27:0712. Okay? Verse 12. And I saw the dead, great
- 27:11and small, standing before the throne, and books
- 27:13were opened. Then another book was opened. Notice.
- 27:16Which is the book of life. By what was written
- 27:22in the books according to what they had done.
- 27:28Everyone is judged on that day. Everyone is judged
- 27:31on that day. Turn to Luke chapter 12. Luke chapter
- 27:3512 verse 41. Peter said, are you telling this
- 27:39parable for all of us? For us or for all? And
- 27:42the Lord said, who then is the faithful and wise
- 27:45manager? whom his master has set over his household
- 27:49to give them their portion of food. Blessed is
- 27:56the servant whom his master will find so doing
- 27:59when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set
- 28:03him over. all his possessions. But if that servant
- 28:09says to himself, my master is delayed in coming
- 28:12and begins to beat the male and female servants
- 28:15and to eat and drink and get drunk, it doesn't
- 28:20matter. Jesus isn't going to return. I can live
- 28:23any way I want to. The master of that servant
- 28:26will come on a day when he does not expect him
- 28:29and at that hour he does not know and will cut
- 28:32him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful.
- 28:37Look what it says in 47. And the servant who
- 28:40knew his master's will but did not get ready
- 28:43or act according to his will will receive a severe
- 28:47beating. And look what else it says. But the
- 28:51one who did not know. will receive a light beating,
- 28:59everyone to whom which much is given, of him
- 29:03much is required. And from him to whom they entrusted
- 29:08much, they will demand the more. Now understand
- 29:11this, those who claim that they're believers
- 29:14in Jesus and know the truth, live like the devil,
- 29:18I'll give those quotes, God will demand a higher
- 29:22accountability for you. God will rescue his people
- 29:31and bring us safely home. Colossians chapter
- 29:351 verse 13 through 14. He has delivered us from
- 29:37the domain of darkness and transferred us to
- 29:40the kingdom of the son he loves in whom we have
- 29:43redemption, the forgiveness of sin. I'm going
- 29:46to summarize verses 9 through 21. I want you
- 29:49to pay attention to a couple things here. First,
- 29:53Demas. Demas was a quote unquote believer. Supposed
- 29:58to be in unity with Paul and the mission of the
- 30:01gospel. But Demas was in love with this present
- 30:05world. And as a result, he deserted and the kingdom
- 30:08and the gospel and gone to Thessalonica. He abandoned
- 30:13his post. Don't abandon your post. Next, verse
- 30:1711. Out of everybody. Luke alone is with him.
- 30:21I talked to you guys before about how I really
- 30:25believed that the letter to the Hebrews is Paulian.
- 30:31I believe that Paul is the one who gave the letter
- 30:35and that Luke is the one who penned it for him.
- 30:38Why? Because there is Paulian language and there's
- 30:41Lukean language in the letter. So as Paul was
- 30:44communicating this through Luke's personality,
- 30:46you see. his hand in it. Why? Because both were
- 30:50inspired writers of the Word of God. Next, notice
- 30:55he says, Mark, bring him with you. He is very
- 30:58useful to me for the ministry. I want you all
- 31:01to be like a mark. Be useful to the ministry
- 31:04of the gospel of Jesus Christ in every and all
- 31:07circumstances, as we read earlier. Paul requests
- 31:11several things. First, he says, bring the cloak.
- 31:14I think the reason why he asked for the cloak
- 31:17It's because I think he wants to be buried in
- 31:19it. Okay? Next. And then he asks for the books.
- 31:24Why the books? Why books? Because Paul has written
- 31:28all of these letters. He asks for books. Bring
- 31:32the word of God to me. Of the things he's asking
- 31:36for, he wants the parchments. He wants the word
- 31:39of God. Amazing. Do you desire the word? This
- 31:48is before the New Testament was completed. The
- 31:51Bible was not in its entirety. And Paul says,
- 31:54I want the word. Man does not live by bread alone,
- 31:57but by every word that comes from the mouth of
- 31:58God. The law of God is honey, sweet to the taste.
- 32:03Then he says, concerning Alexander, this guy,
- 32:07this fake believer, this faux Christian, he's
- 32:11evil. Straight up just basically says that. He
- 32:14did great harm to me, and the Lord will repay
- 32:16him according to his deeds. And then he warns,
- 32:19and I warn you all. Pay attention to those. You'll
- 32:26know them by the word. Here's what he says. Avoid
- 32:30him too. Guard yourself. Beware. 17. Out of everyone
- 32:35that left Paul, everyone abandoned Paul when
- 32:39he was under the pressure. And he begs for mercy
- 32:41on them. He says, but one did not. One did not
- 32:45abandon me. The Lord stood by me and strengthened
- 32:50me. You're never alone. God is always present.
- 32:55Christ is always present. He is in you. If you
- 32:59know him, he lives in you. You are the temple
- 33:03of God. So that. Here's why Christ did not abandon
- 33:07him. Christ stood by him because he belongs to
- 33:10Christ. Christ strengthened him because he belongs
- 33:13to Christ. This is why we are reformed. It's
- 33:17called the perseverance of the saints. You will
- 33:19persevere. Not only in this life here, but in
- 33:23the life to come, you will. He will keep you
- 33:26from the hour of trial. You are not children
- 33:29of darkness, but children of light. You are not
- 33:32children of wrath, but children of God. He will
- 33:35deliver you. And this is what Paul says. Why?
- 33:39So that the message, the gospel, might be fully
- 33:43proclaimed to every Gentile. That's what he says
- 33:47in verse 17. But notice some very important things
- 33:49here. Verse 18. The Lord will rescue me. No one
- 33:55else will. Christ and Christ alone will rescue
- 33:58you. Guaranteed. And bring me safely into his
- 34:03heavenly kingdom. I will go home one day. And
- 34:06he ends it with this statement. To him be glory
- 34:09forever and ever. Amen. That's our God. Preach
- 34:15the gospel. Do the ministry. Work hard. It's
- 34:18my charge to you. So when I get back, we work
- 34:21hard together. Amen? All right. Father, I want
- 34:25to thank you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 34:27Thank you, Lord, for your word. Thank you that
- 34:30you have accomplished and continue to accomplish
- 34:32your will and plan and purpose in Christ. All
- 34:36things are complete in him. We give you praise.
- 34:39Thank you for your work of sanctification. In
- 34:41Jesus' name, amen.
