- 0:00Speaker 1: Does the meat need to be submerged? It's one more thing.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Thing.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Wow, what I have finally, after the suggestion coming to
- 0:17Speaker 1: me from friends, family, co workers and listeners for years
- 0:24Speaker 1: as a single parent trying to figure out how to
- 0:27Speaker 1: feed my kids, as a guy who can't cook, I.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Have finally.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Finally opened up the box, gotten out the crock pot
- 0:35Speaker 1: and put something. Wow.
- 0:38Speaker 2: How long was it? Just stating?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Just stating in it?
- 0:45Speaker 2: I mean it's been a decade, right, I've had a few.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I think I got one for when I got married. Well,
- 0:50Speaker 1: now we use that one, so I huh, they gave
- 0:55Speaker 1: it to you.
- 0:55Speaker 2: That one.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We used a lot, a lot. I washed that thing
- 0:59Speaker 1: a million times, which is fine. Stuffing a crock pot's good.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I can't believe I'm just getting around to it. And
- 1:04Speaker 1: I'll tell you what chat GPT is usual. Chatbots helping
- 1:07Speaker 1: a lot. It had all the most Like I said,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I want, I want to have roast beef like my
- 1:13Speaker 1: mom made it. I'm just picturing a plate of roast
- 1:15Speaker 1: beef with ketchup on it that you know, just falls
- 1:18Speaker 1: apart under your fork. Roast beef with the potatoes. It's
- 1:22Speaker 1: so good. And it told me.
- 1:23Speaker 2: How to pip on roast beef.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You you don't.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Oh no, that's so good. Oh.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Anyway, according to chat GPT, that's a common beginner's mistake
- 1:36Speaker 1: thinking that the the meat needs to be submerged because
- 1:40Speaker 1: the amount of broth that I put in there, the
- 1:42Speaker 1: meat's sticking out over the top of it. And it said, no, no, no,
- 1:44Speaker 1: if you haven't completely covered, it'll ruin it. But that's
- 1:47Speaker 1: a common beginner mistake. I said, how about the potatoes.
- 1:50Speaker 1: They're not submerged either. No, that's perfectly fine. It cooks
- 1:54Speaker 1: an a combination of the liquid and the steam and
- 1:56Speaker 1: the heat and everything in there for eight to ten hours.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So anyway, one thought that I was having and if
- 2:04Speaker 1: if this turns out even close to the stuff that
- 2:07Speaker 1: the way my mom made it, which was probably if
- 2:10Speaker 1: I asked her, she'd probably say, yeah, that's something I
- 2:12Speaker 1: threw together on busy days because it was so dang
- 2:14Speaker 1: easy and it takes no you know, skiller time. But
- 2:18Speaker 1: it's so delicious. I can't believe I'm just getting around
- 2:21Speaker 1: to trying it now.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Are we talking like a pot roast? Yeah? Pot roast, yeah, corn, carrots.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And potatoes that I threw in there. And you know
- 2:31Speaker 1: onion soup mix on top, and it's going to come
- 2:34Speaker 1: out delicious.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah. See to me, the only sauce needed is the sauce, yea,
- 2:39Speaker 2: the broth. The fixen's there? What do you call it?
- 2:41Speaker 1: The juice? Yes, Michael, you gotta try a pork line.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Pork lines are great in crackpots.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna try all kinds of things if this works out.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Can I just throw a fish in her like it's
- 2:52Speaker 1: head on and its tail and everything you could. I
- 2:59Speaker 1: was thinking about the.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You can throw a dead cat there if you wanted.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh, tender was right off the tail.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You gotta slow cook it.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Huh ah, This mouser is tender.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Boy.
- 3:20Speaker 1: What's your like among your favorite things that your mom
- 3:24Speaker 1: used to make? Because I'm thinking about I'm trying to
- 3:26Speaker 1: do a better job of cook for my kids. And
- 3:27Speaker 1: roast roast beef and the crock pots one of the
- 3:29Speaker 1: things my mom would make that was so good.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I know you and I agree on this. I gotta
- 3:33Speaker 3: go right to the meat loaf. I have never understood
- 3:37Speaker 3: jokes about meat loaf. Maybe it was my mom made
- 3:39Speaker 3: really good meat loaf, and my wife makes really good
- 3:41Speaker 3: meat loaf.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Oh, my god, that's it. One of the top items
- 3:45Speaker 2: in the food pyramid. To me, it's delicious.
- 3:47Speaker 1: How much talent involved in a meat loaf? Because I
- 3:50Speaker 1: was thinking about, like some of the stuff I love,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I just.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Got to make sure it's not dried out.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I loved my mom's fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But I'm not gonna be able to make that.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I just I'm just taught m.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Meat loaf. Possibly, yes, Michael.
- 4:04Speaker 3: See the beautiful thing about meat loaf before Michael steps up,
- 4:08Speaker 3: is that, uh, it's fabulous for dinner and Little Worcester
- 4:12Speaker 3: shear sauce and yeah, I indulgent a little ketchup in
- 4:15Speaker 3: that hypocrite.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You're right guilty.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Ah.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But then the next day it's even freaking better on
- 4:21Speaker 2: a sandwich, a meat loaf sandwich. I'm drooling like a
- 4:26Speaker 2: dog over here just thinking about it.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Michael, That's what I was gonna say.
- 4:31Speaker 2: It's better the next day I caught that sick.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Oh what did your mom make that you really liked? Michael,
- 4:40Speaker 1: Lasagna really good? That requires talent. Also, I have no talent.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Oh no, no, it's there's not much to it. You
- 4:47Speaker 2: just it's layers it's just layers. You gotta cook the noodles, but.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Don't say noodles. You're finally. Italians don't like the word noodles.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Noodles is a pasta.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Gotta I cooked the pasta. That's right for the gabba.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I've said this on the air many, many times. My
- 5:07Speaker 1: biggest failing, absolutely as a single parent, has been the
- 5:10Speaker 1: providing meals for my kids. I just I've never cooked.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I don't like it. I know a lot of people
- 5:16Speaker 1: really love it. I hate it, and I've never done it.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So i'm and I'm unwilling to learn.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Would you got to have a living cooking maid like
- 5:25Speaker 3: Alice from the Brady Bunch?
- 5:26Speaker 2: I should have.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I did have an all pair for a summer and
- 5:32Speaker 1: a sitter who needed someplace to live, and I had
- 5:34Speaker 1: an empty bedroom, so I said, live here and I
- 5:36Speaker 1: won't charge you to sit. So that was my all pair.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But she is from a foreign land and her food
- 5:43Speaker 1: smelled horrible, so I never asked her to cook.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Wow, Wow, what foreign land, you will want to say.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Don't I wouldn't ask her to park my car?
- 5:56Speaker 2: Oh? Okay, fair enough.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Wow that's leaves several choices, but close enough. Ah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 3: I liked it the homes of folks from other cultures
- 6:10Speaker 3: and immediately been overwhelmed by the cooking smells and not
- 6:15Speaker 3: in a good way either, Right, Yeah, and I would
- 6:18Speaker 3: probably enjoy but it's like.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Open the windows. It smells horrible. We need to call
- 6:22Speaker 1: a plumber. Something has gone wrong.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah, somebody did put a cat in a crocknot.
- 6:29Speaker 2: A smell run here.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but I would like to recreate some of the
- 6:33Speaker 1: stuff that I really really enjoyed as a kid, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: definitely the crock pot meals. I can do that.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'll tell you what you I don't know. You know
- 6:41Speaker 2: how cooperative your your older boy is these days.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But lasagna, if the three of you divide it up,
- 6:48Speaker 3: you know you're the head of the pasta committee. You're
- 6:52Speaker 3: dealing with the sauce, which frankly.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Can be pouring it out of a jar. And that's fine.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Jar sauce is so much better than it used to be.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh my god.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and then somebody browns the meat or whatever.
- 7:03Speaker 3: You can go sasage, you can go ground beef, you
- 7:06Speaker 3: can go vegetarian if you know you got limp, wrists
- 7:10Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Many choices and that's genies. You gotta have the ricata.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Speaking of my older son, last night, he came home.
- 7:22Speaker 1: He's out with some of his friends, and he came
- 7:24Speaker 1: home and there was a car out front and I said,
- 7:28Speaker 1: who's that and he said, oh, it's He named his
- 7:29Speaker 1: two friends. He said, we're gonna go do some stuff.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And they were laughing in there at the music playing,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and I was thinking, oh my god, this is the
- 7:38Speaker 1: summer between his sophomore and junior year or high school.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Three guys headed out into the night. Does it get
- 7:44Speaker 1: any better than that?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Oh? Not in my recollection. I don't know what they.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Did or what they were going to do or hoping
- 7:51Speaker 1: to do. But yeah, those are some pretty good times
- 7:54Speaker 1: in your life. I was happy for him that he's
- 7:55Speaker 1: getting to have them.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, here here, Yeah, good times. You've made me win full.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Don't let your meat loaf, don't let your hot dog stand,
- 8:05Speaker 1: don't let your wristwatch all good suggestions.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Right right, Jack, gets yourself a fryer so you can
- 8:12Speaker 3: make that fried chicken.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I don't see myself doing that. Just pop it right
- 8:18Speaker 1: in like a lot of work. Well you just throw
- 8:19Speaker 1: it in there, Yeah, you just throw it in there.
- 8:21Speaker 1: And out comes fried chicken.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I find that her to believe you got a battered
- 8:25Speaker 3: the thing right, the chicken you have breading on there, Michael,
- 8:30Speaker 3: do you have any idea what you're talking about about?
- 8:32Speaker 1: Well, I just I hate to see him be so
- 8:34Speaker 1: defeated over food.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because it's not that hard, but uncertainty. It's funny.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I'm very, very slow at prep and my wife is
- 8:45Speaker 1: very you're missing pardon.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Me your missing plot.
- 8:50Speaker 3: It has been acting up lately. I'm taking an anti inflammatory,
- 8:55Speaker 3: but uh, but she is less so now, but really
- 9:01Speaker 3: hesitant about cooking meat because she's afraid she won't get
- 9:03Speaker 3: it right. And fish, really afraid to cook fish. And
- 9:07Speaker 3: I'm like, I'll be fine, I'll cook it. So you know,
- 9:09Speaker 3: we're like Jack Spratt and his uh and his wife.
- 9:14Speaker 3: A lot of hesitancy to cook is uncertainty of how
- 9:17Speaker 3: it's gonna come out. Generally, it'll come out okay, you'll
- 9:20Speaker 3: learn something, it'll be better the next time, nobody will die.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Probably my hesitancy is I just hate it. I don't
- 9:27Speaker 1: understand people liking to cook.
- 9:29Speaker 2: There's why do you hate it? That's what I'm trying
- 9:32Speaker 2: to get behind.
- 9:32Speaker 1: There's not one tiny aspect of the process, fear fear.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I don't think overcome the fear. It seems like a
- 9:38Speaker 1: lot of work for a little payoff. I think it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: because I don't enjoy eating enough. I think that might
- 9:42Speaker 1: be it.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And yet you eat like a grizzly bear. Man, I
- 9:48Speaker 2: can have a hot contradictions.
- 9:50Speaker 1: With mustard every night for the rest of my life
- 9:52Speaker 1: and be perfectly happy.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go, Well, cook out, I'll talk. Then, Well,
- 9:59Speaker 2: I guess that's it.
