- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host Andrew McGivern
- 0:11for August 12th. Today is World Elephant Day, and
- 0:15if there's an animal that deserves its own global
- 0:18celebration, it's these magnificent giants.
- 0:22World Elephant Day was created in 2012 by Canadian filmmaker
- 0:25Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of
- 0:29Thailand to raise awareness about the urgent challenges
- 0:33facing both Asian and African elephants.
- 0:37These incredible creatures are the largest land animals on
- 0:40Earth, but their size isn't what makes them truly remarkable.
- 0:45Elephants are known for their intelligence, their complex
- 0:49social structures, their incredible memory, and their
- 0:52deep emotional bonds with their families.
- 0:55They mourn their dead, celebrate births, and protect their young
- 1:00with a fierce devotion that puts most humans to shame.
- 1:06But here's the sobering reality. Elephants face numerous threats,
- 1:10including poaching for ivory, habitat destruction, and human
- 1:14elephant conflicts. World Elephant Day reminds us
- 1:19that these gentle giants need our protection, and that their
- 1:23survival depends on our awareness and action.
- 1:26There's something profoundly moving about elephants.
- 1:29Maybe it's their wise, knowing eyes, or the way they care for
- 1:33each other, or simply the majesty of watching these
- 1:36ancient souls move through their world with such grace and
- 1:40purpose. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:43from the famous conservationist and primatologist Jane Goodall,
- 1:48who once said what you do makes a difference, and you have to
- 1:53decide what kind of difference you want to make.
- 1:58Jane Goodall spent her life studying animals and fighting
- 2:01for their protection, and her words capture perfectly why
- 2:05World Elephant Day exists. Every choice we make, every
- 2:10action we take, ripples outward and creates change.
- 2:15The question is whether that change helps or harms the world
- 2:18around us. When it comes to elephants, this
- 2:21couldn't be more relevant. The decision to buy ivory
- 2:25products makes a difference, unfortunately a terrible one.
- 2:29The decision to support elephant sanctuaries and conservation
- 2:33efforts makes a difference, and it's a life saving one.
- 2:38The decision to educate ourselves and others about
- 2:42elephant protection makes a difference too.
- 2:44A hope given one. But Goodall's wisdom extends
- 2:48beyond elephants to every aspect of our lives.
- 2:52Every day, we're making choices about what kind of difference we
- 2:55want to make. Do we want to be people who lift
- 2:59others up or tear them down? Do we want to protect the
- 3:03vulnerable or ignore their plate?
- 3:06Do we want to leave the world a little better than we found it,
- 3:10or simply take what we can and move on?
- 3:14The beautiful thing about elephants is they seem to
- 3:16naturally understand this concept.
- 3:19They live in communities where the older elephants teach the
- 3:21younger ones, where they protect the vulnerable, where they
- 3:25remember and honor those who came before them.
- 3:29Now, I'm not an elephant, and I've never seen an elephant in
- 3:33the wild, but I do like making elephant heads out of Mandarin
- 3:37orange peels, a long trunk, and the big ears on either side.
- 3:44Definitely an elephant. I mean, what else could it be?
- 3:49So today, in honor of World Elephant Day, think about Jane
- 3:53Goodall's challenge. What kind of difference do you
- 3:57want to make? Maybe it's supporting elephant
- 4:00conservation. Maybe it's being more patient
- 4:03with your family. Maybe it's choosing kindness
- 4:07over convenience in your daily interactions.
- 4:11Remember, you don't have to be massive like an elephant to make
- 4:15a meaningful impact. Sometimes the smallest acts of
- 4:18compassion create the biggest ripples.
- 4:21That's going to do it for today. May you make a difference worthy
- 4:25of the gentle giants we celebrate today.
- 4:27And may you never forget that your choices matter.
- 4:31And also don't forget to make some funny elephant heads with
- 4:34your Mandarin orange peels, too. I'm Adam McGivern, signing off
- 4:38for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:42Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
