- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions. Possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking and just bring some joy into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody, good morning.
- 0:30Can you hear that? Can you hear all those frogs?
- 0:33Don't they sound magnificent? This is so special.
- 0:37We have been void of this sound for weeks and weeks because we
- 0:41were very dry. And yesterday we got a boatload
- 0:45of rain and all of a sudden the frogs woke up, came out of the
- 0:49trees. They're like everywhere right
- 0:51now. And the trilling is going on so
- 0:54loud. So super excited.
- 0:57Anyway, we're doing the podcast from here this morning.
- 1:00Sun's not even up. OK, so let's talk about
- 1:03expectations versus standards. So there's many differing
- 1:08opinions on this, but I'm going to give you mine because this is
- 1:12something that I truly live by myself.
- 1:15So I have very high standards for myself and the things that
- 1:20I'm involved in and my how I keep my home, how I keep my
- 1:25farm, how I take care of my animals.
- 1:27I have super high standards. I know that.
- 1:31I know they're a pain in the butt.
- 1:33I let me be the first one to say that I know that and my
- 1:38standards are just that. They're my standards.
- 1:42That doesn't mean that I have to have those standards for
- 1:46everyone around me. It means I have those standards.
- 1:50For me, an expectation is somebody else that's around me
- 1:56and then saying, well, I expected you to dot, dot dot do
- 2:00whatever that might be. Expectations versus standards.
- 2:05It's an interesting conversation because often the 2 are
- 2:08commingled. They become twisted.
- 2:11They become like mushed together, if you will.
- 2:15And people confuse them and say, well, I expect that you're going
- 2:19to do this or I expect this. Well, now you've got your
- 2:23standards. Putting something on someone
- 2:25else who may have different standards, which may be lower or
- 2:28higher, This works both ways. And that sets up a recipe for
- 2:32disappointment. Believe me, I've lived it.
- 2:34I know. And when I had to figure out the
- 2:36difference between expectations and standards in my own
- 2:40definitions and how I was seeing them, then I could sort it out
- 2:44and try to say, OK, well, if they're my standards, then I
- 2:48have to hold myself to those standards and nobody else.
- 2:51Like, that's it. Just because someone's in my
- 2:54world doesn't mean that I'm holding them to that standard.
- 2:57It means I'm putting an expectation out there
- 3:00potentially. But again, without telling
- 3:03somebody, that's not fair. And you have to give people the
- 3:07idea of these expectations. You really like, have to say,
- 3:11well, here, this, this is what I'm looking for.
- 3:15You don't have to even say I expect because now that just
- 3:18sounds very, especially if it's a loved one with you, you know,
- 3:23that just sounds very controlling sometimes.
- 3:25So you're like, well, you have to put them out there and say,
- 3:28is this something that you could do or is this something that you
- 3:32could work on with me or approach it in a way that makes
- 3:36you likable instead of dictoria, You know, you want to be a
- 3:40dictator and you'll be dictatorial in the whole thing.
- 3:42You want to be approachable with it and the standards that you
- 3:47have. Some people will say, well,
- 3:49lower your standards and it's really more of lower your
- 3:53expectation. Just lower your expectations,
- 3:57but keep your standard for yourself.
- 3:59So I get up early every day so that I can get a lot of things
- 4:03done before I start working. Nobody forces me to do that.
- 4:06I put that on myself. I have high standards, so I
- 4:11recognize I'd never used to when I was younger.
- 4:14I'd be like, well, I would expect, you know, my person to
- 4:17be that way, but my person is not that way.
- 4:20So I have to look at things the way I am.
- 4:22I willing to give up that standard.
- 4:24And the answer is no, I'm not willing to lower my standards,
- 4:28but I am willing to shift my expectations.
- 4:31Do you see the difference? And it's a really big deal and
- 4:34it really stops a lot of stress. And if I do have an expectation,
- 4:38I have to be very forthcoming in what it all means.
- 4:41I have to be very specific of what that is so that my, my
- 4:47family can understand it or my clients or my partners in
- 4:51business, whatever it is that they, I, I, they understand that
- 4:54I have that expectation based on the standard.
- 4:58So I will language it that way. I will say, listen, my standard
- 5:01is this. And if you're going to work with
- 5:03me, like let's say it's a partnership that I have with
- 5:06somebody, I and I'll come right out and say it, this is my
- 5:08standard. This is how I run it, and my
- 5:11expectation is that if you're going to use my content, you're
- 5:14going to do it the same way. And if you're not, then you
- 5:17can't use my content. And I can be that way because
- 5:20I'm telling them my standard and my expectation and they can
- 5:23agree and then I can hold them to it.
- 5:26But it's a lot less stressful if you approach it this way.
- 5:30OK my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you
- 5:33tomorrow. And I hope you enjoyed the frogs
- 5:35in the background because I certainly did.
- 5:37I'll see you then. Bye.
