- 0:04SPEAKER_04: From Fairbugs, welcome to the Flyer Show!
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: Happy New Year and welcome to the Flyer Show from the icebox that is Watson.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: My name's Ian Seeger.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: I'm EdHicks, and I'm Dave Corderwood.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: We've got a fantastic show for you tonight.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Um, a bunch of news that crept out over Christmas.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: Um, and then we're gonna be taking a look at the year because there's a hell of a lot of stuff going on.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: So, on that basis, we mustn't forget we've got to say thank you to Sky Demon for their continued support.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Both last year, the year before, probably the year before that, and definitely this year.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: So, thank you very much, Sky Demon.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: And here is a brand new tip.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Hi, I'm Tim from Sky Demon.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Welcome to this week's top tip.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: In another video, we show how to locate a flight log and open it to see a preview of where you went and the timings of the log.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: You can also explore a log in detail, and to do this, select Explore in Sky Demon.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: You'll see the log is shown with a blue line on the main map, and here in Virtual Radar 2, where you can see the recorded altitude next to airspace.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Also on the main map is a thin magenta line representing the planned route you had loaded when you did the flight.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: You can zoom in to see every detail of the recorded breadcrumb line.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Back down in virtual radar, notice this little white aircraft symbol.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: You can pick it up and drag it around to see your recorded altitude and speed at every time in your log.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Notice how the aircraft moves in the main map as I move it around virtual radar.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: When you've finished exploring your log, close it with the little red button down here.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: For our full user manual, go to skydemon.ero and choose help and support.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: I love the um I love being able to replay what you did.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's uh it's a great debriefing tool.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: And also, to be honest, you can go, okay, someone said I infringed there.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: I didn't.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it's yeah, it's if you've done it all right, then it's it's your record of going, look, I'm all good.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Well apparently the CA disregards things like GPS and moving map records.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Who'd have thought that, eh?
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: Anyway, there you go.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: It's been, I have to say, the weather over Christmas and into the new year has been pretty I mean, it's been really cold but pretty stunning.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: Uh so we sh shall we see what Simon has in store for us.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: Come on then, Simon.
- 2:35SPEAKER_04: Give us a good start.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Even all, hope you're doing well this evening.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, get set for a wintry spell of weather as we go through this weekend.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: You all have heard all the talk of snow and of amber weather warnings and of significant falls of snow, but that's going to take place overnight tonight and into tomorrow for some of us.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So, what we've got here is the chart for Friday.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So, let's get into the weekend and see what things are doing, what's happening as we go through the weekend for our flying.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Well, Friday we've still got some sleet and some snow affecting eastern parts of England running down through East Anger.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: A brisk northerly wind, gale force wings actually tomorrow morning here.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Elsewhere, a few snow flurries, a few wintry flurries affecting western Scotland running down into northern and western parts of Wales.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Elsewhere, yes, a lot of cloud, particularly across Scotland, across northern England, but but the cloud tending to break and some sunny spells are starting to come through during the afternoon.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: So actually, it's a getting better situation, particularly southern England, the Midlands, Wales, Western Scotland.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: A few showers though getting into the southwestern part of England.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: No, overnight tonight, a frost sets in, I call it a sharp frost by Saturday morning.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But Saturday morning you can see here lots of broken clouds, but generally fair conditions for many of us.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, one or two showers perhaps in the northern parts of Wales, but generally it's dry a couple of showers across part of uh eastern Yorkshire.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Typical bases at 4,000 feet, topped at about 10,000 feet.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Windier conditions for the far north of Scotland.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: There's a chance of some gales here and more incident, right?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And uh a few showers affecting northwestern parts of Ireland, but for most of us actually, it looks fairly decent.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Now, even the afternoon looks okay on Saturday as that ridge of high pressure is going to be building in.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: A few showers across uh northern and western Scotland, increased cloud affecting western parts of Wales and parts of Ireland, and some drizzle getting into Southern Ireland later on, but for the most it looks like being a reasonable afternoon.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And then Sunday, starts of okay across eastern areas, but look at the ice bars.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Can you see that they'll be coming closer together already early on Sunday morning?
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And so that southerly wind is going to increase.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: And it looks like even by early doors, we've got rain and fleet into southwest Scotland, western Wales, and southwestern England.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: As that moves eastwards, although the leading edge of that is going to be turning increasingly into snow.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I think it's going to become quite a problem during the course of Sunday morning and into Sunday afternoon as this front moves in.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Gale falls suddenly winds getting up to 40 or 45 knots as well ahead of that system, and then that passing its way eastwards as we get through into Sunday afternoon and into Sunday evening and bringing a further fall of snow.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: So the day the obvious really, isn't it?
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Having seen that, it is certainly going to be Saturday.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So the message is make the most of that and get out and uh enjoy.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: If you are tempted by Sunday morning, just watch that ice in the wrist.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Now, um, my next aviation weather school part one is rapidly approaching, and it's going to be a completely live online course presented by me on the consecutive Tuesday evenings of the 27th of January and the 3rd of February between 6 30 pm and 9pm.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: After each of these sessions, you actually get a recording to watch for up to a week of the session.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So you can go back and uh see if you missed anything or just brush up on anything perhaps you didn't get the first time around.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: This is a perfect course for all pilots, regardless of your flying experience.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And people from pre-PPL right the way through two commercial pilots have done the course and said they got a heck of a lot from it.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: I will show you how to spot Weather Windows survived as in advance, how to extract the most out of the surface weather charts.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I'll get you understanding forecasts as well more from official sources, and I will get you flying more, I will get you flying out more safely and give you some of my forecasting hints and tips.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: It's great fun as well.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: So if you want to make your mission this winter to get yourself ahead of the game, ready for when the new flying season starts, then this is the course for you to book your place now and go to weather school.co.uk and just on the right hand side here you will see Aviation Weather Part 1 live online.co.uk and that can be yours.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, I will leave you with that.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Have a fantastic weekend, won't you?
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Enjoy the snow if you get it, and take care on Sunday.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Make the most of Saturday if you can.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: I'll see you next week.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Okay, not so good.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Storm Goretti.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: Was it?
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: And a a not very memorable name.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Uh there you go.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Right, let's get into the news.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: What's going on?
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: There wasn't a bit a huge amount over Christmas, but Oh, that was a pretty important story, I think.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: There's the first uh actual Father Christmas?
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: No, it wasn't Father Christmas, but uh no, he it was the first actual real-world emergency landing using autoland.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Uh and it wasn't fitted to a Cirrus, because they've got most of them.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: Uh it's fitted to a King Air, and it was a retrofit.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: Actually, I looked it up, and it's actually the very first retrofit uh to a King Air.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: Um so it's So this is this is the Garmin Autoland System.
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: Um basically push a button and it takes over, doesn't it, and says Yes.
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: You can either push the button uh if if if if if one of your passengers is happening to panic because you've passed out.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:09SPEAKER_05: But in this case, two professional pilots were flying from one airport in Colorado to another.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: And on the way, Colorado being mountainous, they were quite high, they were passing through 23,000 feet, and suddenly they had rapid cabin depressurization.
- 8:23SPEAKER_05: Um so they've got to do something.
- 8:25SPEAKER_05: Apparently the pilots did not pass out.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they managed to get their oxygen masks on quickly, but the Garmin Autoland automatically senses something like a depressurization and uh kicks in.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: And so Autoland automatically kicked in.
- 8:39SPEAKER_05: They didn't have to activate it, um, and it made the decision.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: We're gonna uh fly to it selects the right airport, it did that.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: It then talks to uh the ATC, you know, making these robot-like uh calls.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: Um and the two pilots who are sitting there with their oxygen masks on by now, you know, they they they assessed the situation.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: Apparently it was IFR conditions, including icing.
- 9:03SPEAKER_05: They're over mountains, Colorado.
- 9:05SPEAKER_05: Um so it was a quite a complicated situation.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: So they they basically decided to sit there and let the machine do the work.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: Well, actually, there is a school of thought that because in a high stress situation you want to be you know monitoring things and rather than getting as more involved than you have to, and it's actually a good idea to let the automation take the take over.
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: And then what you do is you monitor, make sure it doesn't get any any worse, uh, but be prepared to take over.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: Which apparently they were.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: Anyway, it all happened okay.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: Uh the aircraft landed all right.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: Um and came to a stop on the runway.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: Because of course it closes the it it closes the airport, doesn't it?
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: The action of doing this.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: And of course it announces, it says the airport's closed.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: The airport's closed.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: It announces that on the 80s frequency, it shots shuts down the engine.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: I have to say the um the controller who was dealing with that um did a really good job of trying to kind of str uh stream all the other traffic around it up until the event took place.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: That's right, yeah.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: Because it came round and circled round the back of the south of the airport before making an approach.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Well, I have to say I've listened and so I haven't listened to you, I've read all of the experts on the internet about this, and there are many, many, many theories, all of which are probably right completely.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: But I think suffice to say, I'm looking forward to reading like an official report of which I'm sure there will be.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: I presume there will be an official report into this.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: But the the bottom line is you know, some something worked uh and and auto-landed the aircraft, and that's that's proof.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Did it proof that it can do that?
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: Not only that.
- 10:35SPEAKER_04: It's um uh it's it got widespread coverage, and actually it's it's it's quite it's kind of good for the the non-GA public to be to go, oh wow, a system that lands an airplane or something.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: Imagine that.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: It's not I'm passing this destination.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: I prefer to go there.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Thanks very much.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: And the aircraft was flying again the next day.
- 10:59SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 11:00SPEAKER_05: I did check on Flight Aware, and it's been flying quite a lot since.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know enough about unexpected depressurizations to understand what it could be fixed so quickly, I don't know.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: Well the but the flight from where it landed back to its base was 10,000 feet.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: That makes sense.
- 11:20SPEAKER_04: So I'm guessing it went back and they they did some inspection.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: So but anyway, yeah.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: We'll we'll let you know when we hear the full report.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'll be yeah, be interested to learn about that.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: But um what's next?
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: Bristol.
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: Bristol, yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: So this is news that the Bristol, um uh the pro I mean what must be one of the most popular two-seat side-by-side modern day um uh sport aircraft, uh, has got its biggest engine yet, uh because it's now been fitted with the Rotex 916IS.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: That's the 160 horsepower engine from Rotex.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Uh and this is uh it's gone in the B-23 model, and in late December 2025, uh that got its CS23 approval from IASA.
- 12:02SPEAKER_04: Uh and basically it's but it's made a new range-topping Bristol.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: And this is an aircraft that's designed for training, touring, and some more demanding roles as well, because obviously it's got um uh certified operating altitude up to 18 uh flight level 180, and it can tow gliders, and there's a maximum towing weight of up to 850 kg.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: Um I guess the glider tow market is pretty vibrant in in Europe.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, and lots of people looking to move away from kind of legacy tugs, um, the bigger things, things like pawnees and stuff like that.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, so um 916 powered B-23, um, that sits in the range alongside.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: You can still get the hundred horsepower 912 IS powered version, uh, plus there's one with the 915.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: Quite why anyone would go, oh, have the slightly less powerful.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: I think the 915 is an engine that's gonna go away.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be it's gonna just drift into gentle obscurity.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: But did you know?
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: So there's over uh uh 1,100 Bristols on the the worldwide fleet now, uh delivered since 2009.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: And I think it's important not important, but it it's CS23 certified.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: That makes it, you know, it it sits alongside the the Sustan 152's PA 38 Tomahawks and stuff like that.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: It really is a modern two-seat, fully certified.
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: I have to say that's a massive feather in in Bristol's cap to get uh because they've essentially gone they what they started out as a as a manufacturer of kit-built aircraft.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: And they've turned into a a world-class supplier.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: Well done, Bristol.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: Congratulations.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: I don't know a price, I have to say.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: I Googled around.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: Numbers I found suggested that it's going to be around about two hundred and seventy thousand plus that.
- 13:48SPEAKER_05: Don't take that as gospel, but that's that live on six engine is pretty punchy in price, isn't it?
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: I know again, numbers I've seen for that have been around about the forty-seven, forty-eight thousand pound mark plus.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: To be honest, compared to new like Omix and Continentals.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Cheap as chip.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Well, not quite cheap as chips.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: No.
- 14:06SPEAKER_04: Well, and everything is expensive.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: I think if twenty twenty-five taught us one thing, it's everything is expensive.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: I'm going to guess that at the end of 2026, nothing will be any no nothing will be any less uh expensive.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: No.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: Um Dave.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Dave, you're going you're going away this week, aren't you?
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: You're going for a field trip.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm going to Comton Abbas tomorrow to uh talk to Ben Perkins, who is the new uh manager of the airfield, a new accountable manager is the title they have.
- 14:36SPEAKER_05: So as he'll be overseeing safety, events, day-to-day operations.
- 14:40SPEAKER_05: And he's he gave a little interview to the local radio station where he's obviously he's talking to the r to the locals in this particular case rather than uh rather than pilots.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: But he was saying that um uh his main target is rebuilding trust with the local community.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: I it didn't give he didn't expand on that and say why the trust was broken down and where, but um anyway, he's moving forward with that, he said.
- 15:04SPEAKER_05: Uh he also was asked about rumours the airfield might be sold.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Um and he said he hadn't heard anything to do with that at all.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: Um and also whether there'd be an application for a hotel.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: I'd be amazed if it won if there's an application there, because it it's in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
- 15:20SPEAKER_05: It's in a stunning location, and I cannot imagine them getting any more permission to build anything more there.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: Well, you never know.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: You say you say that, but there is there's as a footprint goes for buildings.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: If you put a it's it would be a lovely spot for a boutique hotel.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: It would be a fantastic spot for a but I still think it's better as an airfield.
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: But yeah, it's really interesting because I found the um because there was quite a lot of um posting on Facebook in relation to this radio interview.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: And I was quite surprised I it it seemed like this the situation with the locals has got worse than anticipated.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: It's difficult to say.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: I don't know why.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: Well I'll I'll be seeing Ben tomorrow and I'll ask him but uh see what happened.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: So are you gonna are you gonna write that up?
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Hopefully.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: We're gonna write it up and we're gonna shoot a little video as well.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Look forward to that.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: We'll wear that next week.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Excellent.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Um the other thing that happened David Christmas, well, at the end of last year, Cirrus announced that they'd gone through the 11,000th aircraft that they've built, which is phenomenal, uh, to be honest.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: And they've just announced the 2026 model.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Um has to be said that the G7 was that was a kind of model that came out last year, so there's not a huge amount of change and update on that.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: However, they come on there's now a four-bladed prop that's optional.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: I don't think it gives you any extra performance.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: In the press release itself, it talks about extra ramp appeal.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, wasn't four blade four-blade was available twelve months ago, wasn't it?
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know exactly what the change is.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Is there made it's a new four-blade prop or something.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: But you can get a four-blade prop.
- 16:49SPEAKER_04: Would I get a four-blade prop if I was ordering a new Cirrus?
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: I suppose so.
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: I I still think the only reason they went with four-blade props is because you do I think there's a segment of Cirrus buyers who go.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: Give me a what can I have that makes me uh makes me look like I have more than my fellow other Cirrus owners.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: I still think the big prop, big three-blader on the turbo Cirrus, is like it's huge.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: It's massive.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: I think it's one of the best looking props up close in in G A.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Um I've flown a four-bladed prop Cirrus quite a while ago now, actually.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Right, okay.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: It's uh yeah, it's interesting.
- 17:24SPEAKER_04: I guess the big deal for Cirrus last year was they introduced Autoland to the range, to the whole range, didn't they?
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I think you've missed some thumb.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that was the biggest deal, because the other thing that's happened is there's there's now higher spec powerpoints uh in for like USB-C PowerPoints.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: Oh you might think that's not important, but maybe the other thing that's happened is they they've got a they they've got a better um weather sort of data thing.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: So they get in the weather, you can get weather worldwide through the Garmin system.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: But you know, I think that bit is gonna come up some tough competition because there's a lot of people putting Starlink.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Starlink and the hundred-watt ports at the back will power Starlink.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know what the politics is between Starlink and Cirrus, but I wouldn't be surprised if Starlink's offered as a if if it comes to built-in mounts and stuff like that.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Because that's gonna be yeah, frankly, the Starlink subscription is probably gonna be less than the other data subscription anyway.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: And that will give you access to well, it's a YouTube and weather, and no time and all sorts of other things.
- 18:24SPEAKER_04: It's funny, I had a conversation with someone uh over Christmas, and they were talking about the fact that you can buy um you can buy Starlink from Curries.
- 18:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: And like the basic the base even the basic subscription is pretty low cost.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: And actually that would this this particular person was like, oh, I'm thinking of doing this and I'll have internet in flight.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: If it wasn't for Space Caron, I think a lot of people would.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Space Carron.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: You don't know.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Monsieur Musk.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Um but don't forget, don't forget, importantly, there are some three new colour schemes in in there, sort of top-of-the-range models.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: You can now get your cirrus in tangerine, moldives, and something called Viridian.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: I'm guessing.
- 19:10SPEAKER_04: So I think Maldives must be.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: I think we can all imagine what that is.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: But Orange, blue, and green colours.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: We do sometimes joke about the cirrus colourways, but let's not forget that if you go back to the 50s and sixties, every year you bought uh every year that Cessna came out with a new range.
- 19:26SPEAKER_04: It was all about next year's colours.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: So Yeah, it's just that next year's colour was always beige.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Beige.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Would you like more beige?
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Anyway, important story.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: The uh deadline for the consultation on Popham Airfield, um to whether whether or not they're going to build Popham Garden Village on the on the site.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: Um the deadline's coming up from the 23rd of January.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: So between now and then, everyone really has to give a big push and try and get uh try and respond to it.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: Um but respond in a non-emotional way, hard to, I know.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: Facts facts and your feelings.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and if you can include evidence such as you know when you visited, what you went there for, um if you go in for say the microlite rally, uh microite trade fair, sorry, the and uh whatever.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, this is basically pushing back because this is uh Popham in a second uh in a second planning application, isn't it?
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: Enough and allied to the fact that the council said that it was not significant.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: And I unf I can't think of anywhere more significant as as an indicator of what will be going on in the UK General Aviation as Popham.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: Popham is a well, it's a fantastic place, but it is a very, very important and significant.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can't remember how many aircraft there were there.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Something like that, yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just it is it is clearly a key airfield.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: And it involves the local communities as well.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: There's lots of lots of people.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: Lots of stuff going on.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: Lots of stuff going on.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: There's events virtually all through the summer.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: Uh no, it's a fantastic place.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: And let's not forget, it's Greenbelt.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: It's not grey greenbelt.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: It's just greenbelt.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: Well and truly greenbelt.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: And uh if you missed uh we had Brian Lloyd from Popper Matters uh on the show last year.
- 21:10SPEAKER_04: Henry, put a link.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: Um so uh yeah, it's that's worth it.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: If you didn't see that, catch up on that.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, definitely.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: And we'll we'll all be putting our putting our words in.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: If you could do that too, that would be great.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: We'll be reminding you between now and the twenty-third.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: So you leave it till the twenty-second.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: I know we all do.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: Losing airfields is bad, but losing airfields and not taking any action is worse.
- 21:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Um so let's all try and make a difference.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 21:35unknown: Yes.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: I think you've got some good news and some um some about last year.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: Some good news about twenty twenty-six.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: So this is uh obviously uh last year um a flyer ran the FLY twenty twenty-five challenge, which was uh to fly twenty hours, uh to fly two new types and uh to also I'm trying to remember what the fifth.
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: No, that was twenty twenty four.
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: Um, five airfield visit five new airfields to you.
- 22:11SPEAKER_04: Um so uh we've had um we've had uh a thread running through the year on the Flyer Forum.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: It's been really great.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: Obviously that's all down to the uh all the the Flyer Club subscribers who could participate in that.
- 22:30SPEAKER_04: It's been fantastic.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: Um and the the big news is that um we've got four uh there are four people who managed to achieve the Fly 2025 Challenge goals.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: Um and uh they are um there's a forum user called Wandered Two, uh uh Neville Parton, uh Melanie Moxon, and a guy called StratoTramp.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Um and they all achieved their the Flight 2025 goals in various different ways.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: Um Wander2 said my personal aims for 2025 to was to renew my flying instructor rating and and solo a tiger moth.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: I did all of those.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: But he said, then I saw Flight 2025, and he said uh I ended up he said I got the hours.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: Um an aeroplane taking off, yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: I've got the hours, I've flown two new types, I've done five new airfields, uh that's all cool.
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: Neville Parton, on the other hand, absolutely smashed it, 119 hours as P1.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: Um and he also he s says including six hours as in in a new role as a CRI, he said I got three new types as P1 and visited thirteen new airfields.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: Uh Melanie Moxon, who was also Flight 2024's winner.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: Um she's uh she said I did 52 hours, uh got two new types and did five new airfields.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: Uh and StratoTramp, uh he was he got it in right up to the wire at the end of the year, but he said I got my 20 hours, he got uh got two new types and and five new airfields, which I thought was it was it was really good to see.
- 24:07SPEAKER_04: It was it's a really excellent thread.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: Um there were some ex there was some really good honourable mentions.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: A guy called Uncle T did 29 hours, got five new airfields, got one new type, um, but did do f two new passengers to to GA, which was a 2024.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: That's a good thing, isn't it?
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: Um IO390, forumite user IO390, did 24 new airfields, including a whole bunch.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: Twenty four in Europe.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: And not not only that, he hadn't been flying up until June or July in the year, because he was rebuilding his engine in an R in his R V six.
- 24:41SPEAKER_04: Uh and in the remaining time of the year did 120 hours.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: So um Good job.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: So really impressive.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: Um, and one other LS eight pilot, who's a glide who flies a lot of gliders, did eighty-two hours, and I think that was all gliding, um uh did one type, a cadet mark two, um, and did a whole bunch of new turning points and uh got up to over nine.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: I say I'm not sure new turning points.
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: He said he said he said nearly five new turning points, but he did I he said he said I did five thousand kilometres across country.
- 25:16SPEAKER_04: So I thought that was quite impressive.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: I guess in a color you don't particularly want to go flying.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: No.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: Find a new landing.
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: Ideally, your flights would be eight to eight all the time.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: That's it, yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_04: But anyway, um those four fabulous winners of Fly 2025, um uh your prize is to uh come and join us at uh the uh flyer flyer show uh HQ at Wadswick.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: Uh come and join us on a on a recording day and uh join us for lunch.
- 25:43SPEAKER_04: Uh we'll be in contact with all of you guys.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: And you're all wondering, Fly 2026, how can I take part?
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: Um and How can they take part?
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: They can take part.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: So the the fly 20 hours thing seems to be a popular number, so we're keeping that in there.
- 25:58SPEAKER_04: So fly 20 hours, uh fly two new types or introduce two new people to GA.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: Um and for the six, we're saying get a selfie at one of these six places.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: Uh bonus points if you've got your flyer lanyard with you, uh and your target events.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: No, not yet.
- 26:17SPEAKER_04: No selfies yet.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: No time like the present.
- 26:21SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 26:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 26:21SPEAKER_04: Um so we're looking for uh through the year, selfies at the LAA Rally, um Popham MicroLite Trade Fair, Aero Friedrichshaven, uh EAA Oshkosh, uh Slate Kosh, and uh we'll take a uh a selfie if you come and visit the flyer show HQ at Wadswick.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: Do you want selfies at all of these?
- 26:41SPEAKER_04: No, just one of those six places.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: I think if if someone manages to pull off selfies at all those six this year, I'll be impressed.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: That will almost deserve a special prize.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: You're probably the only person who could do that.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: I yeah, maybe.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: I don't think I've been to all of those in a year.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: No.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: There's always one that I've missed somewhere.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Slate kosh.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'd need to do that this year.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: Um but anyway, so there we go.
- 27:03SPEAKER_04: Fly 2026 uh is open and there will be a new forum thread uh which will get going.
- 27:09SPEAKER_04: Um and we'll put a link in the dis in the video description.
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: So make 2026 your year uh and do the fly 2026 challenge.
- 27:16SPEAKER_04: Could I say 2026 any more?
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: No.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Just a quick reminder: if you are enjoying this, do us a favour, give us a like, comment, subscribe.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: It really does help.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: And better still, join the Flyer Club.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: It's only six pounds a month.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Flyer.co.uk forward slash membership.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: It gets you access to all of our webinar series that we've got.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: We must be 30 or 30 plus of those sitting there at the moment.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Some great content there.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Gets you the free landing fees, um, which are this week, actually.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: We're gonna jump into the free landing fees for January are Redford Gamston, Edsfield, yes, uh Perth, Perth.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Perth, Perth Longside, Longside, that's the other one, yep.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Yep, excellent.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: So that would be good.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: So it gets you all that, and plus it enables us to carry on doing what we're doing.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: So give us give us a hand and do that.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: That would be good.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: Right, let's move on.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: So stuff you can do in 2026, just a quick roundup.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: 2026, because it's yeah, because well, you can obviously.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: You need to make plans now.
- 28:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you it's it's the start of the new year.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: Um and say it again.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: 2026.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: Um and yeah, it's uh it's a big deal.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: Um every year's a big deal.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, have you got plans for 2026?
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fly a hell of a lot more than I managed to fly in 2025.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: It was probably my worst flying year.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Weirdly, things conspired against you a bit, didn't they?
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: They they did.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: There was yeah, there was weather stuff, there was breaking my ankle stuff, didn't help, but it was like being busy.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: It was just like not a good not a good flying year.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: So I need to change that this year.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: What about you, Dave?
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: Well, my I've got one ambition uh for uh for flying this year, and that's that's to renew my SEP rating.
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: Uh because it's been expired for a while now, and even though I've done some flying with an instructor, um I just want to get that rating done.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: For me, flying, it's all about flying P1.
- 29:09SPEAKER_05: I just you know it's nice going passenger or being instructed, but but it's all about being P1.
- 29:15SPEAKER_04: So that's that's your goal.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: And you've you've moved house recently, aren't you?
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: So you're probably near a bit more GA than you've been.
- 29:21SPEAKER_05: Yes, it was a bit difficult where I was before.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: It's down in Plymouth because I was an hour and a half, an hour and a quarter, an hour and a half from the nearest airfield, distant flying from Bobmin, which I really liked, but it was still you know a three-hour round trip basically.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: Um so uh yeah, now in now near Gloucester Airport, um which has makes it much easier.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: Excellent.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: Well that'll be good.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: You um I d I had a I had I f I had what I felt like a was a bumper year.
- 29:46SPEAKER_04: For me last year, I did more hours than I'd done in the previous years.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: Uh I got the cub flying, uh, which was great.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: Um I flew the RVs a little bit as well.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: Um this year I've decided um I didn't visit so many places last year, so I'm setting myself the challenge of 26 new strips in 2026, um, which will probably be a lot in the cub.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: If you can guess how many times Ed mentions 2026 in this video.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, so that's that's my plan.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: Um and yeah, I obviously tell us in the comments uh what you uh maybe you're planning a new rating that you're gonna add.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: Maybe you're gonna learn to fly.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Maybe this year is your year to learn to fly.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: Um have you got out of flying?
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: Have you been out of flying for a while?
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: Maybe you're gonna revalidate just like Dave.
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: Um but um yeah, and we're really looking forward to or I obviously we've covered um some some major events in our 2026 challenge.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: But I'm definitely looking forward to Aero always a great show.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: Aero, 22nd to the 25th of April, Friedrich's Harvard.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Stunning if you haven't been before, stunning area, stunning show.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I think possibly my favourite show of the year.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Just it just be just go there.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: Being a little later this year as well means the weather will probably be a bit better than that.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: If you if you there are various ways to get there, but if you're going commercially, fly to Zurich and jump in a car.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Go across the lake from Constance to Middle East.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: It's just all awesome.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: Aero's great show.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: We'll be there reporting from it.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: So um come along, find us.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: And the sooner will we have got back from Aero Micro Lite Trade Fair.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: And I really hope that's gonna be a big booming fair this year.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: It's always busy, always popular.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: But given the given the pressure that Popham's got in the building, let's go support it.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: We'll definitely be there.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Lots of stuff going on there.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: That's that's gonna be good.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um I guess following that, uh the next big big event is gonna be Slateclosh.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: Slateclosh.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Um they're in their sixth year now, I want to say.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: I've in my mind they're in their third, but it's probably more than that.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: Just a bit.
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: But this is um they they there was the and it was true.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: They made the the the bold statement that they were the the UK's biggest fly-in last year.
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: And they and they and they were.
- 32:07SPEAKER_04: I think they were.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: Partly because the weather weather rained out LAA rally.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: But um but that is it's that is really establishing itself as a fantastic it is possibly one of the most um kind of involving kind of fly-in festival events.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: It reminds me a bit, actually.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: I haven't actually been to Slate Kosh, but it reminds me of Tankosh.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: You remember the one that used to be held uh I never went to that.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Tunheim.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: That was a fantastic thing.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Everyone called it Tankosh, it was Tanheim.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: That was everyone camping up and down the side of the the feud stands, lots of parties.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: It was it was much more of a gathering than it was a commercial event.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: It was it was a really Yeah.
- 32:45SPEAKER_04: And I think you could definitely apply that to Sleepkosh.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: So uh and they had they had bonkers bonkersly good weather last year.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: And they sold out a beer.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, on the first day.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: On the first day.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Thirsty work.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: I need to try and get there.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: It's always clashed with our PCL show that we run in in Manchester.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: So um hopefully it won't crash this year.
- 33:03SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I'm gonna try this year.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: Um and obviously the the big one, EA Aventure Oshkosh.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: Um interesting year for this year's being held in Nuke, the capital of Greenland.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: I don't think that's true.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: I don't think that's true.
- 33:18SPEAKER_04: Uh but what is true is that is that this year is the 80th anniversary of what's being highlighted as GA's biggest boom year, uh, which was 1946.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: Uh and you go, why is 1946 of interest?
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: Uh but it's because in 1946, um the GA industry in the States delivered over 30,000 new aeroplanes.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: Um it's a bonkers number.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: Nearly 8,000 Pipers, nearly 8,000 Aronkers, 4,000 Cessnas, um 2,5,000 aircoupes and Luscoms.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: Um it was just so a lot of the aeroplanes that we love as vintage types now were were children of 1946.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: So and and not and don't look unfamiliar on air news today.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: No, I know.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: But uh but I know but Air Venture is going to be all about uh certainly a large chunk of that is gonna be all about celebrating those types.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
