Transcript
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to Valley Hatcheries Podcast.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Today we're kicking off a brand new segment called Chicken Support Insights.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: This is where we take the real conversations that happen every day in our support department and bring them directly to you.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: The questions, the concerns, the planning, the troubleshooting, all of it.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I'm Courtney, the customer support manager here at Valley Hatchery, and I'm excited to open episode one.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: This series is for everyone, whether you're gearing up for your first chickens or you've been managing a flock for years.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: We support every kind of chicken keeper, beginners who want clear guidance, senior keepers who already have systems that want to stay sharp, and the long-term planners who map out their flock years ahead.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Today I'm joined by Connie, our most tenured support representative, who many of you have already known from the phone calls and email.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Connie, thanks for being here.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Courtney.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I'm glad to be part of episode one.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Customers put a lot of trust in us when they reach out.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So getting to talk through some of the topics is something I'm excited for.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And we hear so much every day.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: It's time to share that experience in a format everyone can use.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: One of the biggest reasons we created this series is that we've noticed a pattern.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Whether someone is brand new or deeply experienced, they usually have the same core goal, confidence.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: They want to feel certain that they're doing things right the right way.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And that their breeds are set up for success and that their choices match their goals.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Beginners usually ask things like, is my brooder warm enough?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Or what should I expect at the post office?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And those questions are completely normal.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: There's a lot to learn early on, and you don't know what you don't know.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Experience keepers come in with totally different conversations.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: They ask about rotating breeds, managing egg cycles, hardiness, predator issues, or how to structure their order to spread out laying.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The questions go deep because they've already mastered the basic.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And that's why we wanted this series so we can seek to both ends of the spectrum in one place.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about the beginner side first, Connie.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: What would you say are the topic concerns or mistakes we see with new chicken keepers?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Preparations, hands down.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: The excitement kicks in, they place the order, then the reality hit.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, my chicks are coming.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Now what?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: We get a lot of calls where people say, they're arriving tomorrow.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: What do I do?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And that's stressful for them.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: There's so much value in preparing the brooder early.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Heat lamp tested, proper bedding down, feed ready, water filled, everything cleaned and running before the box ever arrived.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: If the brooder is set up and stable, the rest becomes so much easier.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And the pickup at the post office is another thing.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: We always remind people make sure your phone ringer is on.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Turn up the volume.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Understand that timing, little details like that, make the entire first day smooth instead of overwhelming.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And we're happy to walk beginners through those steps.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's a five minutes call, sometimes an hour, but those conversations are very important.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Now on the other end of the spectrum, we've got the seasoned chicken keepers, and they come in with very different priority.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Experienced keepers want specifics.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: For example, what breed handles extreme cold better?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Or how do I time pull it so I have winter eggs?
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: If I add this breed, will it change the flock dynamics?
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: What's the best spacing between orders to keep production steady?
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: They're operating on a whole other level, thinking seasons ahead.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Think of climate, seed cost, house adjustments, and long-term productivity.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And we love those calls because they're really strategic.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: They give us a chance to help people refine something they've already been good at.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: It's not about foundational sets, it's about optimization.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And those customers value honesty just as much as beginners do.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: If something won't work, they want to know now, not later.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Thinking of thinking ahead, let's talk about the big trend this year.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: People are already calling us about the 2026 flock planning.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: It's been constant.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: People want to know when pre-orders open, which breeds will be available early, and what timeline they should expect.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And for everyone listening, yes, we're working diligently to get pre-orders open soon.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: The demand is real this year.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: People are planning earlier than we've seen in a long time.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And that's smart.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: If you're thinking about your 2026 block, now is the time to start planning.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: It's not in the springtime.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Now is the time.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Planning early gives you the best choices, the best timing, and the least stress.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: It also gives you time to set up your system, whether that's upgrading housing, adjusting your coop layout, or preparing for winter layers.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: One thing I really want listeners to understand is how adaptable our team is.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: No matter who contacts us, we adjust to their background and needs.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: New keepers keep get simple step-by-step guidance, senior keepers get more in-depth technical conversations.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And we're always on it.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: That's a big part of our department culture.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: We set up real expectations, not glamorous ones.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: If your setup needs tweaking, we'll tell you.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: If the breed isn't right for your climate, we'll say that up front.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: That transparency is what helps customers avoid preventable issues and build long-term success.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: In future episodes, you'll hear from all of our rets.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Everyone brings something unique to the table.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Different experience levels, different types of calls, different problem-solving approaches.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: That diversity is what makes our support team so strong.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: We'll be diving into topics like selecting the right breed for your goals, brooder mistakes we see every season, climate considerations, integration and flock management, shipping expectations, predator concerns, and troubleshooting as your birds grow.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And pairing different reps together, each episode will give listeners a clearer picture of the kinds of conversations we have every day.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Sometimes a new rep will ask a question experience keepers didn't even think to add.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And that pushes the topic further.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, I dubbed.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Well, that wraps up episode one of Chicken Support Insight.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Connie, thanks for being uh here with me today to kick this off.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Courtney.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: I'm really looking forward to Kent continuing the series.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: We'll be back soon with more members of our support team as we dig deeper into the questions and challenges chicken keepers face every day.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Whether you're preparing for your first chicks or planning your flock two years out, we're here to help.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: You do it with clarity and confidence.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you in episode two.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Bye for now.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Bye bye.
