- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 45, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? Feels like we just started. Today we're going somewhere useful. Luna: Ooh, where to? Lucas: The post office! In Dutch: het postkantoor. Luna: Het postkantoor. Okay, I've actually been to one in Amsterdam. It was busy. Lucas: They can be. But with a few phrases, you'll get through smoothly. Let's start with a basic one: Ik wil een brief versturen. Luna: Ik wil een brief versturen. That means 'I want to send a letter.' Lucas: Exactly. Ik wil — I want. Een brief — a letter. Versturen — to send. Let's hear you say it. Luna: Ik wil een brief versturen. Lucas: Perfect! Now, you'll likely need a stamp. In Dutch: Ik heb een postzegel nodig. Luna: Ik heb een postzegel nodig. I need a stamp. Lucas: Yes. 'Ik heb' — I have, but here it means 'I need.' 'Een postzegel' — a stamp. 'Nodig' — necessary. So literally 'I have a stamp necessary.' Luna: Got it. Ik heb een postzegel nodig. Lucas: Good. And if you have a package, you can ask: Hoeveel kost dit pakket? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit pakket? How much does this package cost? Lucas: Right. 'Hoeveel kost' — how much does it cost. 'Dit pakket' — this package. Try it. Luna: Hoeveel kost dit pakket? Lucas: Yes. Then the clerk might ask you where it's going: Naar waar moet het? Luna: Naar waar moet het? Where does it need to go? Lucas: Exactly. 'Naar' — to, 'waar' — where, 'moet het' — must it. So 'To where must it?' Luna: Naar waar moet het? That's a handy question. Lucas: And your answer could be 'Naar Spanje' or 'Naar Amerika'. But the clerk might also ask: Binnenland of buitenland? Luna: Binnenland of buitenland? Domestic or foreign? Lucas: Yes. 'Binnenland' — inside the country, 'buitenland' — outside the country. So if you're sending within the Netherlands, you say 'binnenland'. Luna: Binnenland of buitenland. I'll remember that. Lucas: Let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're at the counter. I'll be the clerk, you be the customer. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Goedemorgen, kan ik u helpen? Luna: Ja, ik wil een brief versturen. Ik heb een postzegel nodig. Lucas: Naar waar moet het? Luna: Naar België. Lucas: Binnenland of buitenland? Luna: Buitenland. Lucas: That's perfect! Buitenland. And the clerk might say 'Dat is €1,55' or something. Luna: Hoeveel kost dit pakket? That was my other phrase. Lucas: Right! So you could also have a package. Let's do another quick scene. You have a package. Luna: Goedemorgen, ik wil dit pakket versturen. Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: Naar waar moet het? Luna: Naar Duitsland. Lucas: Binnenland of buitenland? Luna: Buitenland. Lucas: Dat wordt €8,50. Luna: Oké, bedankt! Lucas: Great! You handled that like a pro. Luna: Dank je wel! So let's review all five phrases. Lucas: Sure. First: Ik wil een brief versturen. Luna: Ik wil een brief versturen. Lucas: Ik heb een postzegel nodig. Luna: Ik heb een postzegel nodig. Lucas: Hoeveel kost dit pakket? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit pakket? Lucas: Naar waar moet het? Luna: Naar waar moet het? Lucas: And Binnenland of buitenland? Luna: Binnenland of buitenland? Lucas: Excellent. You've got this. Next time you're at a Dutch post office, you'll be all set. Luna: Yes! And remember, you can always practice with us at Fexingo. Lucas: Right. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next episode. Tot ziens! Luna: Doei!
