Latest / Ghost Cult Magazine Podcast / PODCAST: Episode 835 - Dave Davidson (Revocation) on New Gods, New Masters. Precision & Playlists
Transcript
- 0:00I think there's just certain kind of artists that you can
- 0:02hear where you're like, OK, this this just sounds like it was
- 0:05just cranked out and like doesn't have any kind of soul to
- 0:08it. So it's a bummer when capitalism
- 0:11kind of sinks its teeth into art and, you know, just sucks the
- 0:16life from it. But you know what I mean?
- 0:17We got death metal and we got classical music and jazz and,
- 0:20you know, all sorts of cool forms of, of, of rock and, and
- 0:24hip hop that, that go against the status quo.
- 0:27So, you know, at the end of the day, no one forces you to listen
- 0:29to any out there. You can, you know, choose your
- 0:32own playlist. What's up
- 0:39everybodyitskefi@coastcoatmag.com I am super stoked to be joined
- 0:44by our old friend Dave Davidson. A revocation.
- 0:46How you doing man? I'm doing good man, thanks for
- 0:48having me. Of course, thanks for being
- 0:49back. Like I was just saying, I moved
- 0:52from Brooklyn to California during the plague and I used to
- 0:56see you just socially all the time and see your bands play all
- 0:59the time. And I think the last interview
- 1:01we did was at Vitus, which bums me out.
- 1:05St. Vitus Bar now sadly closed,
- 1:07hopefully to come back someday in some other form, you know,
- 1:10proud of what those folks did. And I love that place to pieces
- 1:14as you know, as you did too. But yeah, man, new album, new
- 1:17gods, new masters coming out on Metal Blade Records new
- 1:20recording lineup, although the lineup's been together for a
- 1:23minute. New album.
- 1:24How's it feeling? 9 albums in like 20 years of
- 1:27Revocation ish almost, and like 30 plus years as a musician for
- 1:31you, maybe more. I don't know if you're
- 1:33sentimental or care about milestones, but journalists we
- 1:35have lizardbrains so we have to. Yeah, yeah, no, it is quite,
- 1:40quite a feat. I mean, I was surprised that it
- 1:43was the 20 year anniversary. Like the the the press team from
- 1:45Metal Blade kind of brought it up and I was like, oh shit, it's
- 1:47been 20 years already. Like just wasn't even on my
- 1:49radar. I was so focused on this new
- 1:50record coming out that I kind of forgot that we have another
- 1:52major milestone coming up in our career.
- 1:55So yeah, that's it. I mean, it's definitely a point
- 1:57of pride for me. I mean, the fact that we're
- 1:59still out there doing it and I've, you know, been able to
- 2:01travel the world and, and, and put out some records that I'm
- 2:04really passionate about and, and, and meet so many great and
- 2:07talented people, you know, along the way in the process.
- 2:10So, so yeah, it's, it's, it's been quite a journey.
- 2:12I mean, regarding the record itself, I'm incredibly proud of
- 2:15it. And I think it's a real
- 2:18milestone in our career. Feels like an amalgamation of a
- 2:22lot of different components of the revocation sound over the
- 2:25years. But also like anything, we
- 2:26always try to kind of push the boundaries.
- 2:28And I think we brought some some new elements to the table,
- 2:31certainly this time around. Yeah, I'm just incredibly proud
- 2:34of it. Well, I'm, I'm not supposed to
- 2:36have favorite bands, but I am. This is a favorite band of mine,
- 2:39as you know, and I am incredibly proud of you because it is hard
- 2:43to maintain any kind of consistency in the world in
- 2:47anything worth doing that's artistic.
- 2:49And this is a band I've been a fan of from the very beginning.
- 2:53I'm proud to say I was there at the start and hooked immediately
- 2:57and still there. And this record's a banger, man.
- 2:59It's all bangers and right off the bat I, I wrote like in my
- 3:03notes, you know, beautiful guitar work, beautiful guitar
- 3:07work. Next track, beautiful guitar
- 3:08work. Just like really, you know, you
- 3:11always seem to level up whatever you're doing on the axe.
- 3:15But I really love some of the stuff on here.
- 3:17It's not. And nothing is thrown away.
- 3:19Everything is I feel like on purpose and like a great film
- 3:22direct, like a Kubrick, like the every every song on the album's
- 3:25like a little painting and I love that so much.
- 3:28Thank you. Thank you man.
- 3:30I, I really appreciate that. I've, I've, I poured everything
- 3:33I had into this one. And, you know, I mean, every
- 3:37record I, I tried to, you know, just deliver the best
- 3:40performances I can, write the best songs that I cans.
- 3:43And so it's, it's so rewarding to me that it resonates with
- 3:46people. Yeah, man, I think this ones
- 3:48going to, you know, of course, hit people over the head, which
- 3:50you kind of need to do today anyway, you know, no fucking
- 3:54around. Like no, you know, grand
- 3:57symphonic intro, like just here's the record go.
- 4:01And I like that too. And I don't feel like any of the
- 4:03songs are overly long, like, you know, the appropriate amount of
- 4:07time. My other podcast host, when I'm
- 4:11not doing band interviews, likes to say that the perfect album is
- 4:1442 minutes and anything longer than that is hard to maintain
- 4:18people's attention in any genre, but especially death metal
- 4:21related bands. And I was like, you know what?
- 4:23That's, you know, when he's right, he's right.
- 4:26Nick Cameron, you're right. So I like that this.
- 4:29Yeah. This record doesn't feel like
- 4:31there's two. There's any fat on it.
- 4:33It's all, it's all pure meat on the bone.
- 4:36No grizzle. Was that a thing you guys were
- 4:38working towards or you know, just particularly this one is
- 4:41more more groovy, less lengthy, less proggy, more straight up.
- 4:46I think like earlier in our career, we'd have like, you
- 4:49know, 11-12 song records. And as we kind of progressed,
- 4:54we've been kind of slowly, you know, keeping it around like 9
- 4:57songs an album that and that kind of feels like, to me like
- 5:01this, like the sweet spot, like sort of like the magic number
- 5:03there. It's enough for people to
- 5:05digest. But also like what I'm writing a
- 5:08record, I try not to sort of think about anything outside
- 5:11external forces, right? I just want to think about, you
- 5:14know, what the what the record is and the music and, and how
- 5:17it's sort of developing in real time.
- 5:20At the same time, you know, the way people interface with music
- 5:23has just changed. And there's, you know, kind of a
- 5:25whole generation of people that are more just accustomed to
- 5:28singles and, and, you know, don't necessarily think about
- 5:32full length records or whatever. It's more playlist based.
- 5:34So I, I try not to let that, you know, affect how I write songs
- 5:39to think about records. But I guess in some way it's
- 5:41like, OK, like what? Yeah.
- 5:43What is that sweet spot? What's that kind of magic number
- 5:46where I feel like I can, you know, kind of create if it's a
- 5:48concept record, sort of flesh the concept out and have
- 5:51different things to talk about and have it be, you know,
- 5:55multiple tracks that kind of encompass where I'm at as a
- 5:59musician and, and the story that I want to tell, you know, both
- 6:01lyrically and musically and at the same time.
- 6:03Yeah, just, you know, isn't like a 15 long song record where, you
- 6:07know, maybe looking half the songs aren't even going to get
- 6:10listened to if people, you know, don't spend the time with the
- 6:14with the record. So 9 feels like, you know, a, a,
- 6:18a good, you know, you go on a good morning run or a, you know,
- 6:22you're listening to it, you know, wherever, just like you
- 6:25know 1 sitting. You put the record on and and
- 6:27you could absorb the whole thing and then go about your day.
- 6:31Right on, I know people feel like 10 is a good round Number
- 6:35for things. I I do like 9 and and nine does
- 6:38kind of play into some love crafty and things that I know
- 6:41you're you've always been a fan of.
- 6:44You know, I still feel like metal fans.
- 6:46I think there's some empirical evidence that says we're the
- 6:49most loyal listeners of anything.
- 6:51And I know that your interests go far beyond metal, as we've
- 6:53often talked about in these interviews.
- 6:55But umm, I do feel like we are album listeners and we're not.
- 7:00I know there's sort of a segment of people that are still kind of
- 7:03like I just discovered metal and I'm playlists and this and that
- 7:07and I get digital natives, Gen. alpha, whatever the fuck
- 7:11marketing term applies. I still feel like it's important
- 7:14to make records for yourself as an artist, for you, and I think
- 7:17it's important. Yet like I don't feel like
- 7:20you're overly metal blade is not breathing down your neck.
- 7:24I don't hear a single what's the video going to be?
- 7:27I feel like you still have some rain in that they might they
- 7:30might suggest things, but it's still your baby.
- 7:33Of course, Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's great to feel like
- 7:35you have complete control, which, you know, it's a nice
- 7:40luxury. I mean, I feel like sometimes
- 7:42bands it's like it turns into such like a paint by numbers
- 7:45thing. And it's like, you know, I mean,
- 7:46I've heard stories about different genres of music where
- 7:50it's like it's it's where they've got kind of ghost
- 7:52writers on everything. And it's so down to a tee where
- 7:54it's like, oh, it's going to be, you know, in this summertime,
- 7:58we're going to write in this key even or like it's going to be in
- 8:01this tempo for the winter. We're going to do a different.
- 8:04So it's a great feeling to know I'm not beholden to any of, of
- 8:07that shit because it just seems like it sucks all of the on and
- 8:10creativity out of music and just literally becomes like a, you
- 8:13know, product that you're just fucking churning out.
- 8:15And, you know, probably for a lot of people that are writing
- 8:17that type of music, it's just a paycheck.
- 8:18Like, I don't know how much they're really pouring their
- 8:20heart and souls into it. But, you know, it's, it's one
- 8:24sliver of, of the music business that luckily I don't have to
- 8:28interface with. And I can just kind of write
- 8:30music and, and songs for for myself.
- 8:33But yeah, lucky number 9, I guess that's.
- 8:36Lucky 9 I am. I'm jealous of sometimes pop
- 8:40musicians having like, dipped my toe back into making music again
- 8:43myself. I'm like, man, it's like, Oh
- 8:47yeah, I forgot how how hard I am on myself when it comes to the
- 8:51writing process. And like, you know, I just need
- 8:53to be more punk rock about stuff personally.
- 8:55But like, I'm jealous of pop artists sometimes because it's
- 8:58like they don't have to think like that.
- 9:01They're not hand wringing over this, over the littlest thing.
- 9:04They're just like funk it, throw it against the wall.
- 9:06Got 18 producers to make one track.
- 9:07Let's throw your thing on and do it.
- 9:10Like there's something probably liberating about that.
- 9:12I guess so, yeah. I mean, that being said, I think
- 9:15there's some incredible pop out there.
- 9:16You know, like there's, so there's some artists that, you
- 9:18know, write amazing song. So like to me, if it's a if it's
- 9:21a good song, it's a good song. There's novel ideas in in all
- 9:25forms of music and, and, and sometimes, you know, just like a
- 9:28great pop hook that that you know, it has an interesting
- 9:33melody with a, with a cool orchestration, you know, that,
- 9:36that, that could be a great thing.
- 9:37So I'm not, I'm not anti pop or anything like that.
- 9:39I think there's just certain kind of artists that you can
- 9:41hear where you're like, OK, this this just sounds like it was
- 9:44just fucking like cranked out and like doesn't have any kind
- 9:47of soul to it. So it's a bummer when capitalism
- 9:51kind of sinks its teeth into art and, you know, just sucks the
- 9:56life from it. But you know what I mean.
- 9:58We got a fucking death metal and we get classical music and jazz
- 10:01and, you know, all sorts of cool forms of of rock and hip hop
- 10:05that that go against the status quo.
- 10:07So, you know, at the end of the day, no one forces you to listen
- 10:10to any of the shit out there. You can, you know, choose your
- 10:13own playlist at least, you know, for the time being, who knows,
- 10:15maybe we all get brain implant ships and it's like you got to
- 10:17fucking you get the new whatever record downloaded straight to
- 10:20your brain interface that you are forced to listen to with ads
- 10:24for Coca-Cola, you know, peppered in there as well.
- 10:27And in which case, just fucking unplug me from the Matrix at
- 10:30that point. Exactly.
- 10:32I'll just. I don't want to eat the steak
- 10:34and pretend it's delicious when I know it's not steak.
- 10:36I, I or vegan food. If you're vegetarian or vegan.
- 10:41I don't know. Yeah, like it is pretty
- 10:44interesting to say, you know, at that point, I think that didn't
- 10:48work the last time when I What is it?
- 10:52iTunes did that with the iPhone for U2.
- 10:55That was a mistake. Turns out Lars was right about
- 10:58streaming. Yeah, even though again, I try
- 11:00to urge everyone to just look at streaming as a search engine for
- 11:05music. Anything you can think of is
- 11:06there mostly minus a few artists.
- 11:09Everybody, it's just like Ticketmaster, everybody.
- 11:11Every time somebody's like I'm pushing back, they cave.
- 11:13Later something happens and they or they, you know, they don't
- 11:16cave, but they, something happens and they go back or they
- 11:20that, you know, few people I know King Gizzard and the Lizard
- 11:22Wizard just dropped off all streaming except Band Camp,
- 11:25which also is, you know, has its own issues.
- 11:27So I don't know, I don't know what the delivery system is.
- 11:30I still love albums. I think you do too.
- 11:32That's why you still do what you do.
- 11:34And I do what I do just to get back to the music for a second.
- 11:37In addition, I'm always interested in, you know, I don't
- 11:40think you've ever had like a real true concept record.
- 11:43But I love where you take things lyrically in places and it's
- 11:46always, you know, you know, not unstandard death metal topics.
- 11:50But we, you know, we've talked about Lovecraft and fantasy and
- 11:54sci-fi writers and stuff like that.
- 11:56Anything new on the palette lyrically this time around or is
- 11:59it just more you go back to that same well?
- 12:02Well, I mean, this is a concept record for sure, through and
- 12:04through. You know, it's about artificial
- 12:06intelligence. It's about technological
- 12:08dystopian pathways that were sort of barreling down with no
- 12:14regard to what the outcomes might be.
- 12:17So yeah, I just felt very compelled to write about that
- 12:20stuff this time around. Right on.
- 12:22I do. I don't, I don't think AI is
- 12:24evil per SE. I have seen all the sci-fi
- 12:27movies. I am a big Terminator person.
- 12:29You know, we've been using machine learning for a long
- 12:31time, especially musicians, especially the music industry,
- 12:34right? But I just think this hype, this
- 12:37over reliance, this hype on everything is not good.
- 12:42The little bit of grad school that I did and teaching that I
- 12:45did, I think I would be mad today if I had to also run
- 12:48everybody's papers through AI checkers and chitchat GPT
- 12:52checkers and things like that would annoy the shit out of me
- 12:55for the little bit of professoring that I did it for
- 12:57marketing and, you know, holy shit, you know, so I don't know.
- 13:03I, yeah, I think we can't be afraid of technology.
- 13:06I think it's important, but at the same time, like, yeah, I'm
- 13:09glad people it's important to have these conversations because
- 13:12I just think there's so much hype and I'm I will be honest
- 13:15and not that I'm trying to get a reaction out of you.
- 13:18I'm disappointed that a Rick Rubin or a Timberland is like so
- 13:22in on like Suno AI and things like that.
- 13:25And like they're excited about making cheap robotic music when
- 13:30these they've made some of the best records ever theoretically,
- 13:33or at least according to some people.
- 13:35So I don't know, man. I don't know.
- 13:37That doesn't give me a lot of hope for the bigger music
- 13:39industry. What a bummer.
- 13:42But you got some guests on this record and I wanted to take a
- 13:46second to talk about them. Love the Johnny Davy song.
- 13:52But in general, when you were writing for someone out, you
- 13:54know, you write for yourself, did you have these artists in
- 13:57mind already and reached out? Did you just hand them a song?
- 14:01What did you do? Yeah, I mean, I of course I
- 14:03reached out to see if they were available and, and, and all of
- 14:06that. I mean, I, I could hear their
- 14:08voices on the, the, the tracks that they guested on and, and
- 14:12thought they would be great additions to the record to kind
- 14:14of help tell the story of the, of the, of the concept of the
- 14:19record. And yeah, they, they delivered
- 14:22amazing vocal performances. Johnny Davies sounds absolutely
- 14:26inhuman. You know, Travis, of course,
- 14:28he's got such a great, you know, unique but brutal voice.
- 14:31And Luke Lemay, I love his voice.
- 14:34It's very, it's super heavy, but it's also really tortured
- 14:37sounding. So yeah, it was an honor having
- 14:40all three of those vocalists and having Galad Hexaman on the
- 14:42record, you know, famous world renowned jazz guitar player,
- 14:47just an amazing musician all around.
- 14:49It was an honor to have him as part of the record as well.
- 14:52Right on. That's a big get for you.
- 14:53I'm glad that some jazz artists are finding their way onto metal
- 14:56records. I know what a big gore guts fan
- 14:58you have always been and keeping it a little bit in the metal
- 15:02blade family also, I'm sure that's awesome.
- 15:04Too convenient. I know there was a time you
- 15:08couldn't have everybody on your records just like 30 less than
- 15:1130 years ago, and now it's like come be on my record.
- 15:13No problem. So that's killer.
- 15:16We love Travis here and we love Johnny.
- 15:18I'm so thrilled that JFAC record made my whole year.
- 15:21Last year I was like, we were like one of the first people to
- 15:25report that they were going to come back at some point and it
- 15:28happened and I'm really happy about it.
- 15:30A lot of times when bands reunite, it's not for the right
- 15:33reasons. Or, you know, come back records
- 15:36and such as they are. Again, music journalism lingo,
- 15:38not real music fan things, things that are not real for
- 15:42most people. But yeah, great guest
- 15:45appearances. I'm so stoked on this.
- 15:47I want people to hear this whole thing.
- 15:49I can't wait because you know, when I hear a good record and I
- 15:53get to talk to somebody I've talked to a bunch of times over
- 15:55the career, like you, I'm thrilled to see where it's
- 15:58going. Like I know where it's been and
- 16:00now I'm excited to see where it's going.
- 16:01So I know once the fans get it, that's the true testament, but
- 16:06I'm pumped you guys have been doing a little bit of touring.
- 16:10Have you been playing any of the new stuff live yet or not yet?
- 16:12Yeah, yeah, we've played, we've played Compounds of Infinity
- 16:15live, we've played Cronenberg live now.
- 16:18So yeah, it's seems like it's getting a really great reaction.
- 16:21Cronenberg it's just so good. I couldn't have even thought
- 16:24like, that's such such a good thing.
- 16:26Like, you know, maybe there maybe you've been a writer this
- 16:29whole time and didn't know you were supposed to be a
- 16:31screenwriter or a or a book, a novelist.
- 16:34Because like, that is such a good so many things to unpack
- 16:38just with that title, let alone the song.
- 16:40Thank you. Thank you.
- 16:41Yeah, it's it's, you know, I have many different interests
- 16:46and it's kind of fun to have Revocation be this vehicle where
- 16:50I can try out some of my more insane ideas at this point.
- 16:54So, yeah, it was, it was cool. I mean, I got some kind of like
- 16:56help, you know, alongside the My Good Eye team, you know, Dave
- 17:00Brodsky and Ally and kind of help Co direct this little mini
- 17:03horror movie. So it was just a ton of fun and
- 17:06act in it, you know, like, you know, it's it's fun to to, you
- 17:09know, be turned into this hideous creature.
- 17:12It was a good time. Yeah, for real.
- 17:14We love, we love Dave and and Allison.
- 17:17They're great. We my partner's done some work
- 17:20with them on their cruise, so good stuff there.
- 17:24Do you have a favorite Cronenberg movie?
- 17:25I have to ask? Right.
- 17:27Be the fly, yeah? So good.
- 17:29It's still like ahead of its time.
- 17:30Yeah. I feel like it's it's one of the
- 17:33few things from that era that feels like an original movie.
- 17:37Like there's it's so not direct. It's obviously like the whole
- 17:41horror genres comes from some roots.
- 17:43But like it felt so fresh and original, every bit of it that
- 17:47like. It feels to me like the old
- 17:50Universal movies, even where it's more suspenseful than
- 17:54horrifying, which is the best. To me, that's the best.
- 17:57Like a gotcha, a jump scare, a gore fest.
- 18:00Those are fun, right? We love those.
- 18:03It's it's about spooky season. So getting ready to do that.
- 18:05Maybe they'll put the Fly on the list to watch this year.
- 18:08I haven't seen it in quite a while.
- 18:11We did just have the 50th anniversary of Jaws.
- 18:13So all the things from our childhood and right before are
- 18:16now like a big deal. I didn't see Jaws obviously till
- 18:19much later because I think if I had seen Jaws, I'd never go near
- 18:22a faucet, let alone a beach in my whole life.
- 18:25If I had seen Jaws as a child, a small imagine seeing Jaws as
- 18:29like a little child, You'd freak out.
- 18:31I think I saw it at first as a teenager on VHS.
- 18:34So yeah, man, again, just super proud of you with this record
- 18:40and super excited to share this interview and and our upcoming
- 18:44review. Any other thoughts what else you
- 18:47have going on? You always have other projects.
- 18:49Any of your other bands active? Or is it just Revocation Time
- 18:52right now? I mean, certainly I'm primarily
- 18:55focused on Revocation with the new record coming out, but you
- 18:58know, I'll take the time to plug some of my other things I got
- 19:01going on the Gargoyle record. The the second album is is
- 19:05pretty much finished. We're just kind of finalizing
- 19:07like some things with the masters right now.
- 19:09So I'm very excited for that. The Pallet Veil material is is
- 19:13kind of on hold right now since, you know, Luke's writing for the
- 19:16Gorguts record and I've got the, you know, the Revocation record
- 19:19about to come up. But certainly when he's, I'm
- 19:21ready to dive back into that. I already have some irons in the
- 19:24fire there, some different ideas cooking.
- 19:25So excited for that. You know, I just did a couple of
- 19:28jazz shows in in New York and and Richmond with some just
- 19:31really killer players. So that was a ton of fun.
- 19:33Hoping to do some more of that sort of in my downtime.
- 19:37I mean, my ultimate goal is just to just fill my, my, my coming
- 19:40years with as much music as I possibly can and, and, and just
- 19:44kind of continue to grow and collaborate with people.
- 19:47And yeah, it's but, but certainly my #1 focus for the,
- 19:52you know, next year or so is going to be Revocation since we
- 19:55have the new record and it's also going to be our 20 year
- 19:57anniversary. So it's going to be a lot of fun
- 19:59things coming down the pipeline there.
- 20:00Totally killer. I of course am also stoked to
- 20:02hear about some some jazz work. Live.
- 20:06Especially, you know, later in life, if you feel like you're
- 20:09slowing down, hopefully not anytime soon, and you want to
- 20:13just sit on a stool and Pizzarelli, this motherfucker
- 20:15and Johnny Smith, this thing. You could do it.
- 20:17I know you can. I've gotten to see a lot of your
- 20:20different bands. Would love to see you do some
- 20:23jazz group stuff. I could.
- 20:26I could totally see the Dave Davidson Quartet someday.
- 20:29I'm into it. I know you would be too.
- 20:31Thank you very much. Well, yeah, hopefully in all
- 20:34this chaos I'll find some time to do a little, do a little
- 20:37writing and arranging for that. So.
- 20:39Yeah, right on. I'm going to wish it into
- 20:41existence. That's there we.
- 20:43Go. Dave, man, it's always a
- 20:45pleasure. Thank you for supporting us over
- 20:47the years. I've been very honored to
- 20:48support you back. It's it's very gratifying to see
- 20:51everything you have put together with the band and and outside
- 20:54too. Thank you so much, my brother.
- 20:56It's a pleasure as always. And yeah, that's the cool thing
- 20:59about metal. It's it's, it's a very, you
- 21:02know, communal thing. We all help each other out and
- 21:06you know, bands wouldn't exist without folks like you and vice
- 21:09versa. So I it's a very symbiotic
- 21:12relationship and we're all part of this strange and beautiful
- 21:17and disgusting Petri dish known as the metal scene.
- 21:20And I wouldn't have it any other way so.
- 21:22Strange. Yeah, strange, but good, Bella.
- 21:25Bedfellows and germs. I'm happy to be 1.
- 21:28We'll see you next, hopefully on the road.
- 21:30Sounds good man.
