- 0:01If you were a pastor or a teacher and you
- 0:04were being sent to a church community
- 0:08that was just beginning and you only had 5 or
- 0:126 weeks with them and then you were called to other places,
- 0:16what would be the most important teaching or doctrine or foundation
- 0:20that you would want to present to get
- 0:24that brand new beginning church to grow?
- 0:28This is exactly what it was with Paul when he went
- 0:31to Thessalonica and he started this church,
- 0:35and he only had maybe 5 or 6 weeks with them total.
- 0:40And what did he talk about? What was the
- 0:44most important thing on his mind that he wanted this persecuted, highly persecuted
- 0:49church to know and understand and believe and embrace?
- 0:53He talked to them in both 1 and 2 Thessalonians
- 0:58about the harpazo, about the coming of the Lord
- 1:01to gather up the church into the clouds to be
- 1:06with him. This was the main theme in
- 1:101 and 2 Thessalonians. Listen in
- 1:14as we unpack 2 Thessalonians chapter 1 today.
- 1:19Welcome to the One Year Audio Bible Podcast. Today is October
- 1:2413th. Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire
- 1:27Bible in one year. This week we are reading from the
- 1:30Israel Bible for the Hebrew Scriptures and from the King James for
- 1:34the New Testament. Exodus 34:10-26.
- 1:45He said, I hereby make a covenant. Before all
- 1:49your people I will work such wonders as have not been wrought on
- 1:53all the earth or in any nation, and all the people who
- 1:57are with you shall see how awesome are Hashem's deeds which I
- 2:01will perform for you. Mark well what I command you this
- 2:05day. I will drive out before you the Amorites,
- 2:08the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites,
- 2:11the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Beware of making
- 2:15a covenant with the inhabitants of the land against which you are
- 2:19advancing, lest it be a snare in your midst.
- 2:22No, you must tear down their altars,
- 2:25smash their pillars, and cut down their sacred posts.
- 2:30For you must not worship any other god, because Hashem,
- 2:34whose name is Impassioned, is an impassioned
- 2:37God. You must not make a covenant with
- 2:41the inhabitants of the land, for they will lust after their gods and sacrifice
- 2:45to their gods and invite you, and you will eat of their sacrifices.
- 2:51And when you take wives from among their daughters for your sons,
- 2:54their daughters will lust after their gods and will cause your sons to
- 2:57lust after their gods. You shall not make
- 3:01molten gods for yourselves. You shall observe the Festival of
- 3:05Pesach, eating unleavened bread for 7 days,
- 3:08as I have commanded you, at the set time of the month of
- 3:12Abib, for in the month of Abib you went forth from Egypt.
- 3:18Every first issue of the womb is Mine,
- 3:21from all your livestock that drop a male as firstling,
- 3:25whether cattle or sheep. But the firstling of
- 3:29a donkey you shall redeem with a sheep; if you do not redeem it,
- 3:33you must break its neck. And you must redeem every firstborn
- 3:37among your sons. None shall appear before Me empty-handed.
- 3:426 days you shall work, but on the 7th day you
- 3:46shall cease from labor. You shall cease from labor even at plowing
- 3:49time and harvest time. You shall observe the Festival
- 3:54of Shavuot, of the Firstfruits of the Wheat Harvest, and the
- 3:58Feast of Ingathering at the Turn of the Year. 3 times
- 4:02a year all your males shall appear before the Sovereign Hashem, the God of
- 4:06Israel. I will drive out nations
- 4:10from your path and enlarge your territory. No one will
- 4:14covet your land when you go up to appear before Hashem your
- 4:17God 3 times a year. You shall not
- 4:21offer the blood of my sacrifice with anything leavened, and the sacrifice
- 4:25of the Festival of Pesach shall not be left lying until morning.
- 4:30The choice firstfruits of your soil you shall bring
- 4:33to the house of Hashem your God. You shall not
- 4:36boil a kid in its mother's milk.
- 4:44Jeremiah 22:1-23:20.
- 4:49Thus said Hashem, go down to the palace of the king of
- 4:53Judah where you shall utter this word.
- 4:56Say, Hear the word of Hashem, O King of Judah,
- 4:59you who sit on the throne of David, and your courtiers and
- 5:03your subjects who enter these gates. Thus said Hashem,
- 5:07Do what is just and right. Rescue from the defrauder
- 5:11him who is robbed. Do not wrong the stranger,
- 5:14the fatherless, and the widow. Commit no lawless act and do
- 5:19not shed the blood of the innocent in this place. For if you fulfill this
- 5:23command, then through the gates of this palace shall enter kings of David's
- 5:28line who sit upon his throne riding horse-drawn chariots with
- 5:32their courtiers and their subjects. But if
- 5:35you do not heed these commands, I swear by Myself, declares Hashem,
- 5:39that this palace shall become a ruin.
- 5:42For thus said Hashem concerning the royal palace of Judah: You
- 5:46are as Gilead to Me, as the summit of Lebanon,
- 5:50but I will make you a desert, uninhabited towns.
- 5:54I will appoint destroyers against you, each with his tools.
- 5:58They shall cut down your choicest cedars and make them fall into
- 6:01the fire. And when many nations pass by
- 6:04this city, and one man asks another, why did Hashem
- 6:08do thus to that great city? The reply will be,
- 6:11because they forsook the covenant with Hashem their God and bowed
- 6:16down to other gods and served them. Do not weep for the dead
- 6:20and do not lament for him. Weep rather for him who is leaving,
- 6:24for he shall never come back to see the land of his birth.
- 6:28For thus said HaShem concerning Shallum, son of King Yoshiyahu
- 6:33of Judah, who succeeded his father Josiah
- 6:37as king, but who has gone forth from this place: He shall never
- 6:41come back. He shall die in the place
- 6:45to which he was exiled, and he shall not see this land again.
- 6:50Ha! He who builds his house with unfairness,
- 6:53and his upper chambers with injustice, who makes his fellow man
- 6:57work without pay and does not give him his wages,
- 7:01who thinks, I will build me a vast palace with spacious
- 7:04upper chambers provided with windows, paneled in
- 7:08cedar, painted with vermilion. Do you think you are more a king
- 7:12because you compete in cedar? Your father ate
- 7:16and drank, and dispensed justice and equity, then all went well
- 7:19with him. He upheld the rights of the poor and
- 7:23needy, then all was well. That is truly heeding
- 7:27Me, declares Hashem. But your eyes and
- 7:30your mind are only on ill-gotten gains, on shedding the
- 7:34blood of the innocent, on committing fraud and violence.
- 7:38Assuredly, thus said Hashem concerning Jehoiakim
- 7:42son of Yoshiyahu, king of Judah: They shall not mourn for him,
- 7:46Ah, brother! Ah, sister! They shall not mourn
- 7:49for him, Ah, Lord! Ah, His Majesty!
- 7:55He shall have the burial of a donkey, dragged out and
- 7:58left lying outside the gates of Jerusalem. Climb Lebanon
- 8:02and cry out, raise your voice in Bashan, cry out from Abiram,
- 8:06for all your lovers are crushed. I spoke to you
- 8:10when you were prosperous, You said, I will not listen.
- 8:13That was your way ever since your youth. You would not heed Me.
- 8:18All your shepherds shall be devoured by the wind, and your lovers shall
- 8:22go into captivity. Then you shall be shamed and
- 8:25humiliated because of all your depravity.
- 8:29You who dwell in Lebanon, nestled among the cedars, how much grace
- 8:32will you have when pains come upon you,
- 8:35travail as in childbirth? As I live,
- 8:39declares Hashem, if you, O King Coniah,
- 8:43son of Jehoiakim of Judah, were a signet on My right hand,
- 8:46I would tear you off even from there. I will deliver you
- 8:50into the hands of those who seek your life, into the hands of those
- 8:54you dread, into the hands of King Nebuchadnezzar of
- 8:58Babylon and into the hands of the Chaldeans. I will hurl
- 9:02you and the mother who bore you into another land where
- 9:05you were not born. There you shall both die.
- 9:09They shall not return to the land that they yearn to come back to.
- 9:13Is this man Coniah a wretched broken pot,
- 9:17a vessel no one wants? Why are he and his offspring hurled
- 9:21out and cast away in a land they knew not?
- 9:26O land, land, land, hear the
- 9:29word of Hashem! Thus says Hashem: Record this man
- 9:33as without succession, one who shall never be found acceptable,
- 9:37for no man of his offspring shall be accepted to sit on the throne of
- 9:41David and to rule again in Judah.
- 9:48Ah, shepherds who let the flock of my pasture stray and scatter,
- 9:51declares Hashem. Assuredly, thus said Hashem, the God of Israel,
- 9:55concerning the shepherds who should tend my people: It
- 9:59is you who let my flock scatter and go astray. You gave no
- 10:03thought to them, but I am going to give thought to you for your wicked
- 10:06acts, declares Hashem, and I myself will gather the remnant
- 10:11of my flock. From all the lands to which I have banished them,
- 10:15and I will bring them back to their pasture where they shall be fertile
- 10:19and increase. And I will appoint over them shepherds who will tend
- 10:24them. They shall no longer fear or be dismayed, and none of
- 10:28them shall be missing, declares Hashem. See, a time
- 10:32is coming, declares Hashem, when I will raise up a true Branch of
- 10:36David's line, He shall reign as king and shall prosper,
- 10:40and he shall do what is just and right in the land. In his
- 10:44days Judah shall be delivered and Israel shall dwell secure.
- 10:48And this is the name by which he shall be called: Hashem is our
- 10:52Vindicator. Assuredly a time is coming,
- 10:56declares Hashem, when it shall no more be said,
- 10:59As Hashem lives, who brought the Israelites out of the land of
- 11:03Egypt! But rather, As Hashem lives, who brought
- 11:07out and led the offspring of the House of Israel from the
- 11:11Northland and from all the lands to which I banished them, and they shall
- 11:15dwell upon their own soil. Concerning the
- 11:19Nevi'im, my heart is crushed within me, all my
- 11:23bones are trembling. I have become like a drunken man,
- 11:27like one overcome by wine, because of Hashem
- 11:31and His Holy Word.
- 11:36For the land is full of adulterers; the land
- 11:39mourns because of a curse. The pastures of
- 11:43the wilderness are dried up; for they run to do evil, they strain to
- 11:47do wrong. For both Navi and Kohen are godless; even
- 11:52in My House I find their wickedness, declares Hashem.
- 11:56Assuredly, their path shall become like slippery ground; They
- 12:00shall be thrust into darkness, and there they shall fall. For I will
- 12:04bring disaster upon them, the year of their doom, declares Hashem.
- 12:09In the Nevi'im of Shomron, I saw a repulsive thing.
- 12:13They prophesied by Baal and led My people Israel astray.
- 12:18But what I see in the Nevi'im of Jerusalem is something horrifying:
- 12:23adultery and false dealing, They encourage
- 12:27evildoers so that no one turns back from his wickedness.
- 12:31To Me they are all like Sodom and all its inhabitants
- 12:35like Gomorrah. Assuredly, thus said the LORD
- 12:39of hosts concerning the Nevi'im, I am going to make them eat
- 12:42wormwood and drink a bitter draught. For from the
- 12:46Nevi'im of Jerusalem godlessness has gone forth to the whole land.
- 12:51Thus said the LORD of hosts, Do not listen to the words of
- 12:55the Nevi'im who prophesy to you. They are deluding you.
- 12:59The prophecies they speak are from their own minds, not from the
- 13:03mouth of Hashem. They declare to men who despise Me,
- 13:06Hashem has said, all shall be well with you. And to all who
- 13:10follow their willful hearts they say, no evil shall befall you.
- 13:14But he who has stood in the Council of Hashem and seen
- 13:18and heard His Word, he who has listened to His Word,
- 13:22must obey, Lo, the storm of Hashem goes
- 13:26forth in fury, a whirling storm.
- 13:30It shall whirl upon the heads of the wicked.
- 13:33For the anger of Hashem shall not turn back till it has fulfilled
- 13:37and completed His purposes. In the days to come,
- 13:42you shall clearly perceive it.
- 13:492 Thessalonians 2:1-17.
- 14:012 Thessalonians 1:1-12.
- 14:06Paul and Silvanus and Timothy unto the church of the Thessalonians
- 14:11in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to
- 14:14you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 14:18We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren,
- 14:22as it is meet, because that your faith grows exceedingly
- 14:26and the charity of every one of you all toward each other abounds,
- 14:31so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches
- 14:34of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions
- 14:38and tribulations that you endure. Which is a manifest token
- 14:42of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy
- 14:46of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer,
- 14:50seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense
- 14:54tribulation to them that trouble you. And to you
- 14:58who are troubled, rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall
- 15:02be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels
- 15:06in a flaming fire taking vengeance on
- 15:10them that know not God, that obey not the gospel of our Lord
- 15:14Jesus Christ, who shall be
- 15:18punished with everlasting destruction from the
- 15:22presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power, when he shall come
- 15:26to be glorified in his saints, to be admired in all them
- 15:30that believe, because our testimony among you was believed,
- 15:34in that day. Therefore also we pray always
- 15:38for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling
- 15:42and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness and the work
- 15:46of faith with power, that in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
- 15:50may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our
- 15:54God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 16:00Psalm 83:1-18.
- 16:04Keep not silent, O God, hold not your peace,
- 16:08and be not still, O God. For lo, your enemies
- 16:11make a tumult, and they that hate you have lifted up the head.
- 16:15They have taken crafty counsel against your people, and consulted
- 16:20against your hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us
- 16:24cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may
- 16:28be no more in remembrance.
- 16:31For they have consulted together with one consent; they are confederate
- 16:36against you: the tabernacles of Edom
- 16:39and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagarenes,
- 16:44Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, the Philistines
- 16:47with the inhabitants of Tyre; Asshur is also
- 16:51joined with them: they have helped the children of Lot.
- 16:57Selah. Do unto them as unto the Midianites,
- 17:00as to Sisera, as to Jabin at the Brook of Chison,
- 17:04which perished at Endor. They became as dung for the earth.
- 17:09Make their nobles like Oreb and like Zeeb,
- 17:12yes, all their princes as Zeebah and as Zalmunna,
- 17:15who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.
- 17:19O my God, make them like a wheel, as the stubble before the wind.
- 17:24As the fire burns a wood and as the flame sets
- 17:28the mountains on fire, so persecute them with Your tempest and make
- 17:32them afraid with Their storm. Fill their faces with shame
- 17:36that they may seek Your name, O Lord. Let them be confounded
- 17:40and troubled forever. Yes, let them be put to shame
- 17:44and perish, that men may know that You, whose name
- 17:47alone is Yahweh, are the Most High over all
- 17:51the earth.
- 17:56Proverbs 25:11-14. A word
- 18:01fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of
- 18:05silver. As an earring of gold and an ornament
- 18:09of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
- 18:14As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger
- 18:19to them that send him, for he refreshes the soul of his
- 18:22masters. Whoso boasts himself
- 18:25of a false gift is like clouds and wind without
- 18:30rain. I want to speak to you today from
- 18:33our reading from 2 Thessalonians chapter 1.
- 18:38And Paul was in Thessalonica for maybe
- 18:425 to 6 weeks. And he planted the church.
- 18:46And in 1 Thessalonians, he basically lays the groundwork and
- 18:49he gives them a basic doctrine and teaching about
- 18:54an event that would come called the Rapture or
- 18:58Harpazo, where Jesus
- 19:03comes and we are caught up to him in the clouds.
- 19:08And so he lays that foundation of that teaching in the first book of
- 19:12Thessalonians. Now in the second letter or the second book.
- 19:16The reason why Paul wrote this second letter is
- 19:20because somebody came along and had stirred the pot
- 19:24and was creating all kinds of controversy and fear and anxiety
- 19:28because, well, in the next chapter, which we'll see
- 19:32tomorrow when we read it, is that somebody wrote a letter saying,
- 19:36oh, the rapture has already happened and you missed it and
- 19:40you're still here, and so you're going through the tribulation period. And so the
- 19:44people in Thessalonica were all upset thinking that
- 19:49they had missed the Rapture. Thessalonica was,
- 19:52uh, at the heart of commerce, and there
- 19:56were roads going from the north, the south, the east, and the west, and all
- 20:00kinds of commerce and trade and travelers were passing through.
- 20:04And it was highly, highly, highly persecuted. The early
- 20:08believers were greatly persecuted from the Roman Emperor.
- 20:13And so things were very, very bad. So he wants
- 20:17to set the record straight, and he gets into that in chapter 2, which we'll
- 20:21read tomorrow. But in the first chapter,
- 20:25we see some wonderful lessons that we can glean from
- 20:28this very first chapter that we read today.
- 20:32Some key lessons and takeaways that we can glean from this chapter is that
- 20:36we are to be found worthy of the calling of
- 20:40being in Christ Jesus. We are to be found blameless
- 20:45even in our afflictions.
- 20:47Blameless does not mean that you're absolutely perfect
- 20:51and you never sin and you never make a mistake, but that you are pursuing
- 20:56a holy lifestyle. And we're also—
- 21:00another lesson we can glean from what he shares in this chapter is that we
- 21:04are to let our love for one another keep growing,
- 21:08that that love for one another in the body of Christ
- 21:12needs to continue to grow because that's like a little taste
- 21:17of heaven. And we are to find, may Christ
- 21:21be in you on that day. What day?
- 21:25The day of the Lord. The day when Jesus comes back
- 21:29to judge a Christ-rejecting
- 21:33generation of people to judge the wicked and
- 21:37the crooked and the corrupt and those who have rejected Him.
- 21:42And He also says that there's a time coming when those who
- 21:46afflict you will themselves be afflicted, and that
- 21:50eternal destruction is coming to those who do not obey
- 21:54the gospel, that there's a day of reckoning
- 21:58coming. But judgment is mine, says the Lord. We are to
- 22:01walk in grace and in forgiveness, and in humility,
- 22:05but there is a day of reckoning, and that eternal
- 22:09destruction is coming to those who do not obey the gospel,
- 22:13and that Jesus will be revealed in flaming fire
- 22:18with His mighty angels. We could summarize this chapter
- 22:22by saying we are to keep growing in our love for one
- 22:26another. We are to live holy, blameless lives.
- 22:30And Jesus will return in flaming fire, and those
- 22:34who do not obey the gospel will go to
- 22:38destruction. So Father,
- 22:42we just want to take these truths from this scripture and apply
- 22:46them to our lives. Help us, Lord, to continue to grow in love
- 22:50for the brethren in the family of God.
- 22:54Please guide us into the right church community that
- 22:58You have for each one of us. Where we can fit in,
- 23:01where we can belong, where we can connect,
- 23:05where we can love and be loved by others
- 23:09in the family of God. I pray this in Jesus' name.
- 23:14Amen. That's it for today. We'll see
