- 0:24Speaker 2: up until five o'clock and then at seven o'clock a reminder,

- 0:43Speaker 2: seven if you're unable to catch the Thursday.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Airing of it. And a fun show.
- 0:48Speaker 2: We have linebackers coach co defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen. What
- 0:53Speaker 2: a job he's done with that linebacking corps. And also
- 0:56Speaker 2: Jordan Shipley, one of the all time long worn heroes,
- 0:58Speaker 2: the last guy before Ryan Niblett, the last guy to
- 1:02Speaker 2: return two punts for a touchdown in a single season.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Shipley did that back in two thousand and nine, the
- 1:07Speaker 2: year the Long Ones went all the way to the
- 1:09Speaker 2: National Championship the BCS National Title Game before falling to Alabama,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and Chipley had two punt returns for touchdowns that season.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So we'll visit with Jordan tonight on the program as well.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Producer of the program is Jay Carman. How's your day going?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Pretty good?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like DC out there today, like Washington, DC.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yeah, a little colder.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Is this a little more like climatetologically speaking, more inside
- 1:37Speaker 2: the Beltway?
- 1:37Speaker 1: What you feel this time of year?
- 1:38Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, it's a little bit, a little bit of
- 1:41Speaker 4: a sharp change from what we saw byt a week ago.
- 1:43Speaker 3: That was fast.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I saw a.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I saw a crawl on the bottom of it said
- 1:51Speaker 2: the National was getting close to naming their new field manager.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Then they did name their new field manager.
- 1:55Speaker 1: That's how close they were.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and I heard it, saw it this morning as
- 1:58Speaker 2: it was close, and then I got caught caught up
- 2:01Speaker 2: in media Zoom's first one for Steve sar Keys and
- 2:04Speaker 2: then one for Sean Miller.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So they have a new manager.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Blake Viewterra is going to be the youngest manager in
- 2:08Speaker 4: fifty years in the Big Leagues, thirty three year old
- 2:12Speaker 4: director of player development from the Rays. Some folks thought
- 2:15Speaker 4: he was going to be a front office candidate, but
- 2:17Speaker 4: many saw him as a future manager. Paul Taboni, youngest
- 2:21Speaker 4: GM now in Major League Baseball, taps the youngest manager.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So youth movement in Washington.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you to be served. We'll see how that plays out. Hey,
- 2:30Speaker 2: coming up in a few minutes, Roger Wallace, Sports director
- 2:34Speaker 2: k x A, and of course NBC thirty six here
- 2:36Speaker 2: in Austin and my broadcast partner and Long Worn Football
- 2:39Speaker 2: will join us. We'll talk some long worn football clearly
- 2:41Speaker 2: as they get ready for the Vanderbilt Commodores. And Roger
- 2:45Speaker 2: and Keith Warlan will call a very important high school
- 2:47Speaker 2: football game tonight in the next to last week of
- 2:50Speaker 2: the regular season in twenty five six a huddo at
- 2:54Speaker 2: Vista Ridge. And so we'll visit with Roger about that
- 3:00Speaker 2: later on in the program. Obviously, we'll have him conceivable
- 3:03Speaker 2: this hour. In the three o'clock hour, we'll hear from
- 3:09Speaker 2: Sean Miller, the brand new men's basketball coach University of
- 3:12Speaker 2: Texas Longhorns open the season next Tuesday in Charlotte against
- 3:17Speaker 2: Duke and so we'll hear from Sean Miller coming up
- 3:19Speaker 2: at the three o'clock hour. In the four o'clock hour,
- 3:22Speaker 2: long wrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian, we'll hear from Sark
- 3:25Speaker 2: the update of the final media weekly opportunity that is
- 3:31Speaker 2: afforded the media, the media Zoom. So we'll hear from
- 3:34Speaker 2: Sark coming up in the four o'clock hour. But we
- 3:37Speaker 2: begin with baseball, where now the Toronto Blue Jays are
- 3:40Speaker 2: one went away from winning their first World Series in
- 3:43Speaker 2: thirty two years since nineteen ninety three, and they wasted
- 3:47Speaker 2: no time getting off to a good start, as we
- 3:51Speaker 2: did this yesterday. This is fun to hear this audio
- 3:54Speaker 2: because this is father and son Dan Shulman. You've heard
- 3:57Speaker 2: him a lot on ESPN, but he's doing the telecast
- 4:00Speaker 2: on Sportsnet in Toronto and his son Ben Shulman is
- 4:05Speaker 2: the play by play voice on radio for the Blue Jays.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So the Jays wasted no time in getting off to
- 4:12Speaker 2: an excellent start. David Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Junior back
- 4:18Speaker 2: to back home runs to open the ball game. First,
- 4:21Speaker 2: the call from the Elder Statesman, Dan Shulman.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Game five is underway with a fly ball to d
- 4:29Speaker 5: Cleft done the first pitch of the ball game, and
- 4:36Speaker 5: David Schnyder has hit it out.
- 4:40Speaker 2: What a starts, Okay, So that was the runt. Two
- 4:45Speaker 2: pitches later with Vlad Junior up.
- 4:48Speaker 6: This happened here and the Blue Jay fans making a
- 4:51Speaker 6: ton of noise, and.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Now Calero rips one to d Clift, p.
- 4:55Speaker 7: It's gone, and two.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Batters in up two to that thing. My oh my,
- 5:03Speaker 5: what a start for the Blue Jays here tonight.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It was all of that, all right.
- 5:07Speaker 2: So that's Dan Shulman on Sportsnet, the television network in Canada.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Now here's his son Ben Schulman calling the two home
- 5:17Speaker 2: runs on Blue Jays Radio.
- 5:19Speaker 6: Snell into the Liners the first pitch of Game five
- 5:22Speaker 6: of the World Series, and it's in high left field
- 5:24Speaker 6: and deep callback at the track, leaps at the wall.
- 5:28Speaker 7: And that ball it's gone.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Our first pitch homer for David Schneider.
- 5:36Speaker 6: And the Blue Jays take the.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Lead of the first.
- 5:40Speaker 7: Welcome to Game five.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And the one Lottie rocks the.
- 5:44Speaker 6: Ball left field and deep back.
- 5:46Speaker 2: To the wall.
- 5:47Speaker 8: It is good again.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Back to back Blass.
- 5:51Speaker 6: In the first and in three pitches the Blue Jays
- 5:55Speaker 6: leap to nothing.
- 5:57Speaker 1: What in the world are we watching right now?
- 6:00Speaker 2: They were watching was only getting started because that was
- 6:02Speaker 2: the offense. And then trey Is Savage struck out twelve
- 6:09Speaker 2: batters and in the game, absolutely dominant in the game
- 6:14Speaker 2: full the Blue Jays who wind up winning it by
- 6:17Speaker 2: a score of six to one. So a tremendous effort
- 6:20Speaker 2: by trey Ya Savage, who then you know, just had
- 6:26Speaker 2: all the support and the adulation from his teammates with
- 6:30Speaker 2: what he did and also from his manager. But before
- 6:35Speaker 2: we get to that, there was David Schneider, the guy
- 6:37Speaker 2: who really got it off and going with that first
- 6:39Speaker 2: pitch home run.
- 6:41Speaker 8: He has a really good change up as Austi's his curveball,
- 6:44Speaker 8: his slider, so he has a lot of good pitches. Obviously,
- 6:47Speaker 8: his fastball is ninety six ninety eight, so you can't
- 6:49Speaker 8: really take that for granted as well.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But you know, George kind.
- 6:54Speaker 8: Of always preaches always be ready for the fastball first
- 6:56Speaker 8: pisch lead off the game, and George has done it
- 6:58Speaker 8: for numerous years, and you know, I got to take
- 7:00Speaker 8: some advice when I can get it, And yeah, sitting
- 7:03Speaker 8: fastball was up on his zone. I didn't really think
- 7:05Speaker 8: I got it, but you know, maybe playoff baseball, they're
- 7:08Speaker 8: a little bit juice.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Well, I don't know.
- 7:11Speaker 2: George, of course, being George Bringer, who I think will
- 7:13Speaker 2: be back for Game six. He was available for pinch
- 7:16Speaker 2: hit duties if needed last night, so I think he'll
- 7:18Speaker 2: be back for Game six.
- 7:20Speaker 1: All right.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So John Schneider, the manager, talked about this historic outing
- 7:26Speaker 2: for tray You Savage, Uh, he was pretty good.
- 7:32Speaker 9: Historic stuff, you know what I mean when you talk
- 7:34Speaker 9: about that stage and his numbers, getting ahead of a
- 7:40Speaker 9: lot of hitters, tons of swinging miss you know, it's
- 7:43Speaker 9: it's one thing to be in the zone and it's
- 7:47Speaker 9: another thing to be in the zone and get some
- 7:49Speaker 9: swinging miss. So slider and split were electric. You know,
- 7:52Speaker 9: I said it before the game. It's it's a different
- 7:56Speaker 9: picture when he has his stuff. You know, Game one
- 7:58Speaker 9: didn't have a feel for his splits, so kind of
- 8:02Speaker 9: blown away at what he did.
- 8:04Speaker 2: As many were, including his Savage himself, talking about his journey. Remember,
- 8:08Speaker 2: he started the season in Class A ball in Jupiter, Florida.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Then he went to High then he went to Double A,
- 8:15Speaker 2: then he went to Triple A, then to the bigs.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Now in the World Series with a rookie record twelve
- 8:20Speaker 2: strikeouts scattered three hits over seven innings to get the win.
- 8:24Speaker 10: It's a crazy world, crazy world. Hollywood couldn't have made
- 8:28Speaker 10: it this good. So just being a part of this,
- 8:31Speaker 10: I'm just very blessed.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So now the Jays are one went away and they're
- 8:35Speaker 2: going back home with a three games to two series lead.
- 8:38Speaker 2: A game six tomorrow night Toronto and Los Angeles, and
- 8:43Speaker 2: the Blue Jays will.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Try to wrap it up. The Dodgers try to stay alive.
- 8:47Speaker 2: They do have Yoshinoba Yamamoto going to the mountain tomorrow night.
- 8:50Speaker 2: If the Dodgers win, there will be a seventh and
- 8:53Speaker 2: final game on Saturday night. All Right, we'll hear more
- 8:57Speaker 2: on this throughout the course of the program afternoon, but
- 9:00Speaker 2: up next we talk to football with Roger Wallace here
- 9:02Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the
- 9:04Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app Here on a Thursday afternoon on Sports Radio
- 9:14Speaker 2: AM thirteen hundred of the Zone on Thursdays, we take
- 9:18Speaker 2: the opportunity to talk football with Roger Wallas, my broadcast
- 9:24Speaker 2: partner on long worn Football Broadcast and of course sports
- 9:28Speaker 2: director at KXAM, where they do their high school football
- 9:33Speaker 2: telecast on Thursday nights on KBVO, which you can see
- 9:37Speaker 2: tonight on KBVO channel fifty one. As Roger joins us down,
- 9:42Speaker 2: I'm completely throwing you a curveball on this only because
- 9:45Speaker 2: it's fresh in my mind last night after watching the
- 9:48Speaker 2: World Series game. Of course, you know me a Dodger fan,
- 9:49Speaker 2: so I'm all out of sorts, so I'm just flipping
- 9:51Speaker 2: around the channel, and then I remembered that Austin FC
- 9:55Speaker 2: was in game one of its playoff series with LAFC,
- 9:58Speaker 2: So I turned it on and watched the second half
- 10:01Speaker 2: of that, and I just had a total heartbreaking night
- 10:05Speaker 2: all the way around, because that was kind of tough
- 10:07Speaker 2: for SC last night, giving up that late Lake goal
- 10:10Speaker 2: there for l a f C to win.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Okay't quite here yout thim at Roger.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Uh, Okay, we we might have.
- 10:25Speaker 1: A mute bender or table.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Maybe it may just have to give Roger call if
- 10:29Speaker 2: it doesn't pop up there on the phone. So I'll
- 10:33Speaker 2: tell you what, Roger, We'll try to reconnect with you
- 10:35Speaker 2: on the phone on this. But it was it was
- 10:37Speaker 2: a tough, narrow two to one defeat, and that was
- 10:43Speaker 2: after FC had fallen behind one deal close first half,
- 10:48Speaker 2: kind of some bad luck for the Verdium Black Ryan
- 10:52Speaker 2: Hollingshead played a low pass across the six yard box
- 10:55Speaker 2: and deflected in off Brandon Heinzeich and then Austin responded
- 11:00Speaker 2: well at a halftime John Gallagher, uh equalized it. But
- 11:05Speaker 2: l A f C getting that lead, they okay, so
- 11:06Speaker 2: rogers with us now. Uh, like I said, just it
- 11:09Speaker 2: was a bad, bad luck, bad night for me all around,
- 11:12Speaker 2: but it was. It was certainly some ill misfortune for
- 11:16Speaker 2: FC last night.
- 11:18Speaker 11: Yeah, it's tough.
- 11:18Speaker 12: I mean, last last team to play in the playoffs.
- 11:21Speaker 12: They've been so anxious to get this going, had success
- 11:24Speaker 12: in their two regular season matches with with l A
- 11:27Speaker 12: f C. And then you know, it seems like about
- 11:30Speaker 12: every other goal you're wondering was there off sides or not?
- 11:33Speaker 11: But belongs a goal.
- 11:34Speaker 12: Obviously Austin f C probably thought he was off sides,
- 11:37Speaker 12: but regardless.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:38Speaker 12: Yeah, now they've got to come home and at least
- 11:40Speaker 12: it's a you know, the format changed for years ago
- 11:42Speaker 12: where they.
- 11:43Speaker 11: Get another shot two out of three series.
- 11:45Speaker 12: So Sunday night, either the season comes to an end
- 11:49Speaker 12: or or they go back to Los Angeles next.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Week exactly in uh, the you know the fact that
- 11:56Speaker 2: I thought it was a nice response from FC when
- 11:58Speaker 2: they got down one nil on the on that unfortunate
- 12:01Speaker 2: goal which definitely could have had offside call, and there
- 12:03Speaker 2: was a lot of conversation about it, and then on
- 12:06Speaker 2: the second one it's well, so it's it's been kind
- 12:08Speaker 2: of interesting to see that. But you pointed out, you know,
- 12:12Speaker 2: FC's done well against LAFC last tear match, so I'm
- 12:15Speaker 2: sure this isn't a mental thing or a confidence thing
- 12:18Speaker 2: for them.
- 12:19Speaker 11: Well, I think they're confident.
- 12:20Speaker 12: I think the way the season's gone just because they've
- 12:24Speaker 12: had a battle through so many different things, and you know,
- 12:27Speaker 12: the US Open Cup run was great. They got a
- 12:30Speaker 12: chance to play for a trophy, but it kind of
- 12:31Speaker 12: took its toll on the front end and on the
- 12:33Speaker 12: back end because.
- 12:35Speaker 11: Of the way they had to manage the roster.
- 12:36Speaker 12: And then you know, I mean go back to losing
- 12:39Speaker 12: their leading score Brandon Vasquez in July, and owen Wolf
- 12:43Speaker 12: has emerged. Obviously Galler got the goal last night, but
- 12:47Speaker 12: I think regardless of what happens Sunday night, it's been
- 12:50Speaker 12: quite a first year for a coach that people weren't
- 12:53Speaker 12: sure if that was the right move to get Nico
- 12:55Speaker 12: Svez and then he had to kind of work with
- 12:57Speaker 12: a patchwork roster as well. So I would say moving
- 13:01Speaker 12: forward regardless, as we now year five of the MLS,
- 13:06Speaker 12: you kind of learned that these rosters can can get
- 13:09Speaker 12: overhauled pretty quickly. It seems like they have a good
- 13:12Speaker 12: base moving forward.
- 13:13Speaker 2: No doubt about it. All right, let's jump to the
- 13:15Speaker 2: American football. So now I say that and it's a
- 13:20Speaker 2: combination of American football and Australian rules football, because that
- 13:25Speaker 2: was one of the fascinating things that came out of
- 13:28Speaker 2: the Sark or rather the Clark Lee SEC teleconference yesterday
- 13:35Speaker 2: was the fact that.
- 13:38Speaker 1: The Gold Coast Suns team from Queensland.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Australia watched that Netflix series The Enny Giving Saturday following
- 13:47Speaker 2: the SEC teams and saw the shock the world thing
- 13:49Speaker 2: of Vanderbilt beating Alabama and their head coach so taken
- 13:55Speaker 2: by Damian Hardwick, he and his assistants fly twenty two hours.
- 14:00Speaker 1: It's been two days with.
- 14:01Speaker 2: The commodores this week to say how do you guys
- 14:03Speaker 2: do it? That sort of thing, But it kind of
- 14:05Speaker 2: reflects an overall national fascination about this program and how
- 14:10Speaker 2: quickly Clark Lee has turned this group around, doesn't it?
- 14:14Speaker 11: Yeah, it really does.
- 14:15Speaker 12: And I may have told this before, but I was
- 14:17Speaker 12: I was working in Kansas when Bill Snyder did what
- 14:19Speaker 12: he did at Kansas State, and at the time that
- 14:22Speaker 12: was the greatest build people would say of all time,
- 14:25Speaker 12: from Sports Illustrated calling them the worst team in college
- 14:28Speaker 12: football to being a constant contender, and Vanderbilt maybe even
- 14:33Speaker 12: more so because what we thought might be a you know,
- 14:36Speaker 12: limited resources, a school that maybe didn't have the fan
- 14:40Speaker 12: base or the resources for football.
- 14:43Speaker 11: We know they have resources.
- 14:45Speaker 12: And then being in the SEC you combine all that
- 14:48Speaker 12: is it is amazing what they've done. And I think
- 14:51Speaker 12: it's too simple, and I fall into this trap to think, oh,
- 14:53Speaker 12: they got Diego Pavia, they got this pied piper and
- 14:58Speaker 12: success followed. Do that in bad basketball a little bit
- 15:00Speaker 12: more than you can do it with one player in football.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:04Speaker 2: And and UH had a good conversation about him last night,
- 15:09Speaker 2: UH with Sark when we were doing the show, and
- 15:12Speaker 2: he said, he said, I want I want to make
- 15:14Speaker 2: sure that I'm clear on this. He's he's a very
- 15:18Speaker 2: talented football player. He he does some really well skilled things,
- 15:24Speaker 2: especially if you're not locking him down. That said, his
- 15:27Speaker 2: best talent is his attitude and his leadership in getting
- 15:32Speaker 2: everybody to believe that they're that that they're going to
- 15:36Speaker 2: win every game. Andrew Ali Gretta, their play by play guy,
- 15:38Speaker 2: was on with me yesterday and uh, he said that
- 15:42Speaker 2: he one time said to pave you know, I really
- 15:44Speaker 2: kind of believe that you believe that every game is winnable.
- 15:49Speaker 2: And Pavey said, it is. It is and everybody does
- 15:53Speaker 2: believe that. But but beyond that, and I think Sark's
- 15:56Speaker 2: point was Pavey, along with Clark Lee, of course, has
- 16:00Speaker 2: instilled the belief.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Now they've had a talent to it.
- 16:03Speaker 2: And of course we're all familiar with Cedric Alexander and
- 16:06Speaker 2: what he did at LBJ. And by the way, is
- 16:12Speaker 2: is his record now on the verge of is Crenshaw
- 16:18Speaker 2: on the verge of breaking that record?
- 16:21Speaker 12: Yeah, we might have it. We might have it next week.
- 16:24Speaker 12: I think he needs two fifty now the Anderson running
- 16:28Speaker 12: backs start at LBJ to get that AISD record, So
- 16:31Speaker 12: we might have it in that season finale. Anderson and
- 16:34Speaker 12: Weiss a week from tonight out at the Field.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Wow, okay, all right.
- 16:37Speaker 2: So but then in addition Cedric Alexander, he got mk Young,
- 16:41Speaker 2: who's a native text and he's from Midland Legacy. He
- 16:44Speaker 2: like pavienn Eli Stowers, transferred in from New Mexico State.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So there's this pipeline from Los Cruises to Nashville. What
- 16:51Speaker 2: does that say about the state of college football these
- 16:54Speaker 2: days when really good football players are moving from Los
- 16:58Speaker 2: Cruises to Nashville.
- 17:01Speaker 12: Yeah, and the common threat is Jerry Kill, who was
- 17:03Speaker 12: kind of Clark Lee's right hand man, and you know,
- 17:07Speaker 12: he was the one I think Jerry Kill pretty much
- 17:10Speaker 12: told Clark Lee if the story goes as I remember, that,
- 17:13Speaker 12: you need to get this guy.
- 17:14Speaker 11: And Clark Lee had enough confidence in what he said
- 17:18Speaker 11: to go get him. So yeah, it's crazy.
- 17:21Speaker 12: I mean, you got a fair estate transfer leading a
- 17:24Speaker 12: top five team in Ole Miss or top ten team
- 17:26Speaker 12: in ole Miss. So yeah, we're way beyond trying to
- 17:30Speaker 12: make sense of oh if they played here. Certainly that
- 17:33Speaker 12: doesn't translate to here that those stories are too many
- 17:37Speaker 12: And we don't know what's going to be the quarterback
- 17:39Speaker 12: situation on Saturday with Texas, but there could be a
- 17:43Speaker 12: guy that was at Gardner Webb and Jacksonville State and Troy.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Matthew Calwell will be ready at the ready if needed.
- 17:52Speaker 2: I Sark, I think feels optimistic. I guess is the
- 17:57Speaker 2: way because Arch has practiced. But the way the protocol works,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and Sark's very quick to try to help people understand this.
- 18:06Speaker 2: The way the protocol works, you can't just declare him
- 18:10Speaker 2: ready to go, you know, just because he practiced on
- 18:13Speaker 2: was he first and foremost he has to practice on Thursday.
- 18:17Speaker 1: That's part of the protocol.
- 18:18Speaker 2: So he did go through the practice this morning, but
- 18:21Speaker 2: there's some other cognitive things and some other stuff he
- 18:23Speaker 2: has to go through before he can be cleared to
- 18:26Speaker 2: then be classified as probable or questionable or whatever. He's
- 18:30Speaker 2: questionable right now, but you can't declare him ready to
- 18:33Speaker 2: go for the game until he passes all those those
- 18:35Speaker 2: other tests. Still, I think Sark feel's confident aut And
- 18:39Speaker 2: the one that's kind of surprising me is Michael Taff
- 18:43Speaker 2: being able to come back and work so quickly.
- 18:46Speaker 12: Yeah, and that would be that would obviously be huge
- 18:49Speaker 12: depending on how they wrap up that hand, and you
- 18:53Speaker 12: know what, they.
- 18:54Speaker 11: Can can get a soft cast on.
- 18:55Speaker 12: There's something that's legal that he can go out there
- 18:58Speaker 12: and play with just just having is not only his.
- 19:01Speaker 11: Ability but his leadership and a guy.
- 19:03Speaker 12: That played in that tough Vanderbilt game last year he
- 19:06Speaker 12: had I think he ended up picking that game as well,
- 19:10Speaker 12: So that would be big both get both sixteams back
- 19:14Speaker 12: on the field Saturday.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Yeah, against this Vanderbilt offense.
- 19:17Speaker 2: And we've talked about it and one of the guys,
- 19:19Speaker 2: I guess we should give some credit to old pal
- 19:21Speaker 2: tim back with what he's done with this Vanderbilt offense,
- 19:25Speaker 2: with Pavia, with Alexander, with the one two punch with
- 19:28Speaker 2: Alexander and Young and Stowers of course being being a
- 19:31Speaker 2: big time targeted tight end.
- 19:34Speaker 12: Yeah, they're scary now.
- 19:36Speaker 11: They didn't.
- 19:36Speaker 12: You know, they weren't great offensively obviously in a seventeen
- 19:38Speaker 12: to ten win over Missouri, So then.
- 19:41Speaker 11: You go, okay, they must have a pretty good defense too,
- 19:43Speaker 11: and they do.
- 19:45Speaker 12: But even last year when we were there, it kind
- 19:47Speaker 12: of felt like Texas took control and you look up
- 19:49Speaker 12: and it's a one score game and Texas needs fourth
- 19:52Speaker 12: down stops and and you know, field goals to a
- 19:55Speaker 12: big run and then a field goal to kind of
- 19:57Speaker 12: ic it. But this team, it doesn't go away such
- 20:00Speaker 12: a mirror I think, not not just Pabia, but I
- 20:02Speaker 12: think the way Clark Lee has built the program as well. So, uh,
- 20:07Speaker 12: you know it's gonna be ah, it's gonna you know,
- 20:09Speaker 12: pack your lunch and your hard hat Saturday for this
- 20:12Speaker 12: one for the Longhorns.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Visiting with Roger Wallace, sports director k X A N
- 20:16Speaker 2: And of course I broadcast partner in Long Horn football.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Let's shift to high school now, because the telecast you
- 20:22Speaker 2: guys have is a huge matchup tonight and uh, in fact,
- 20:28Speaker 2: uh you even said it last week when you were
- 20:31Speaker 2: talking about games on down the road. You said, we
- 20:34Speaker 2: we've kind of had to take our lumps on some
- 20:35Speaker 2: of those. Uh, some of those games have been lopsided.
- 20:38Speaker 2: But these next two weeks, tonight's game with Huddo and
- 20:41Speaker 2: Vista Ridge and next week with Anderson and Weiss, I
- 20:44Speaker 2: mean they promised to be really impactful games, not only
- 20:48Speaker 2: in terms of the quality of the game itself, but
- 20:50Speaker 2: what it means to the district races.
- 20:53Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 12: I mean you look at twenty five six day and
- 20:55Speaker 12: it's five pretty much five for four and Huddo's in
- 20:59Speaker 12: good shape, Bobby, they have the five wins they have
- 21:03Speaker 12: the win over Round Rock. They also have that win
- 21:08Speaker 12: over Vandergriff or they lost I'm sorry to vander it,
- 21:10Speaker 12: but they have the win over a round Rock. So
- 21:12Speaker 12: tonight's kind of a pivotal game there, Vista Ridge. If
- 21:16Speaker 12: they can get past this one and get to five
- 21:17Speaker 12: and two, you like their chances against Westwood somebody. A
- 21:21Speaker 12: pretty good team's going to be on the outside looking
- 21:23Speaker 12: in in a very competitive nine team district. Round Rock
- 21:27Speaker 12: sitting at four and too, and they still have to
- 21:28Speaker 12: play Vandergriff next week after they play Stony on Tomorrow
- 21:33Speaker 12: night at the Palace.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Well here, you know, me, I get into a lot
- 21:37Speaker 2: of the minutia thing and if if I'm going to
- 21:39Speaker 2: if I'm going to be the one and I did
- 21:41Speaker 2: the other day to when somebody asked sarka question that
- 21:47Speaker 2: was so it delved into so much minutia, I said
- 21:50Speaker 2: it bordered It was bordering on the booger eating status.
- 21:54Speaker 13: You know.
- 21:55Speaker 2: So if I'm going to say that about that, I
- 21:57Speaker 2: got to say that.
- 21:57Speaker 1: About myself as well.
- 21:58Speaker 2: But in diving in this the thing that I came
- 22:02Speaker 2: up with that that just kind of really raised my eyebrows,
- 22:06Speaker 2: was you laid out who had beaten who. Vista Ridge
- 22:09Speaker 2: had beaten round Rock but lost to Vandergriff and lost
- 22:12Speaker 2: to McNeil. McNeil beats Vandergriff but loses to round Rock,
- 22:17Speaker 2: and now they've got that tough closing schedule, and they
- 22:19Speaker 2: were also upset by Sea to Ridge. And then you
- 22:22Speaker 2: have Huddle, which has the loss to Vandergriff, but they've
- 22:25Speaker 2: beaten everybody else, and then they've gotten these two big
- 22:29Speaker 2: games left tonight against Vista and then next week against McNeil.
- 22:32Speaker 2: The shakedown on all of this stuff is, and you're right,
- 22:35Speaker 2: Huddle's in the driver's seat if they win tonight to
- 22:39Speaker 2: be the top seed in the Division one bracket, Huddle
- 22:44Speaker 2: of the five contenders, Huddle would definitely be Division one,
- 22:48Speaker 2: Round Rock would be definitely Division one. But round Rock
- 22:51Speaker 2: still us to play Vandergriff if they were to lose
- 22:54Speaker 2: to Vandergriff next week, and if Vista Ridge were to
- 22:57Speaker 2: beat Huddle tonight, and then this to plays Westwood next
- 23:01Speaker 2: week and to places McNeil. If they both get in
- 23:04Speaker 2: and the other two of McNeil and Vandergriff, then this
- 23:08Speaker 2: the Ridge goes is the top seed in Division one
- 23:12Speaker 2: and avoids Lake Travis and by district and plays Bowie
- 23:16Speaker 2: in a rematch of the game that the you and
- 23:18Speaker 2: I had on back earlier in the season. Now that's
- 23:22Speaker 2: also uh you know, depending upon Booie beating Austin High.
- 23:26Speaker 2: If they lose to them tomorrow like they did last year,
- 23:28Speaker 2: then it's gonna you know, mess things up again and
- 23:32Speaker 2: you're gonna wind up seeing Westlake back in.
- 23:34Speaker 1: The D one bracket again. But it's those kinds of things.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And that's the fascinating thing I always find about six
- 23:40Speaker 2: A is because they don't decide who goes Division one
- 23:45Speaker 2: and who goes Division two, is done by ing rollments
- 23:47Speaker 2: at the end of the year, unlike all the other classifications.
- 23:49Speaker 2: It does bring that extra element of drama into the
- 23:53Speaker 2: final two weeks of the regular season.
- 23:55Speaker 11: No doubt.
- 23:56Speaker 12: And uh yeah, I was, I was thinking the same
- 23:59Speaker 12: thing with with Booie and and Austin High. But we're
- 24:01Speaker 12: trying to avoid two years in a row with you know,
- 24:04Speaker 12: having the Maroons keeping out of the playoffs and creating
- 24:06Speaker 12: some certainly some chaos in uh in six A, Division
- 24:11Speaker 12: one and Division two that you know, twenty six twenty five.
- 24:14Speaker 11: Six a's pretty well set.
- 24:15Speaker 12: Just when you look at the the enrollments, you kind
- 24:18Speaker 12: of know where where they're gonna be.
- 24:20Speaker 11: D one, D two. But to this to your point
- 24:22Speaker 11: about the seating, but yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 12: It's gonna be It's gonna be a fun finish. And
- 24:27Speaker 12: you know, it was interesting last week, Craig. I'm sure
- 24:30Speaker 12: you took notice sitting in two below as I did
- 24:33Speaker 12: with what Lake Travis did to h Westlake last last
- 24:36Speaker 12: week at Chaperone.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Absolutely, and and they look, you know, really really solid,
- 24:42Speaker 2: uh so, and and Hank Carter's got that team on
- 24:45Speaker 2: the roll. And and I'm sure you're looking forward to
- 24:47Speaker 2: this not only are you know, we think about some
- 24:50Speaker 2: huge final week of the regular season matchup like Bastrop
- 24:56Speaker 2: Liberty Hill would be really really big next week. Assuming
- 24:59Speaker 2: bast Drop handles it business against Blugerville this week, that's
- 25:01Speaker 2: one big, one big game. Then obviously west Lake dripping Springs,
- 25:06Speaker 2: that's a huge game. And then those other two matchups
- 25:08Speaker 2: we mentioned in twenty five to six a Round Rock
- 25:11Speaker 2: against Vandergriff and Huddo against McNeil. I mean, all of
- 25:16Speaker 2: those could really really be climactic on the final weekend
- 25:19Speaker 2: of the regular season.
- 25:21Speaker 12: Might be better than some first round playoff games depending
- 25:25Speaker 12: on how they take out, and you know, as much
- 25:27Speaker 12: on the line if you're talking about trying to get
- 25:29Speaker 12: to that first round. So yeah, and Dripping Springs, I
- 25:33Speaker 12: mean that program. You know that they're the other ones
- 25:35Speaker 12: when you think of west Lake and Lake Travis and
- 25:38Speaker 12: Lake Travis and Westlake.
- 25:39Speaker 11: However you want.
- 25:39Speaker 12: To just say it, but man, what a job Galen
- 25:42Speaker 12: Zimmern's done in that district to kind of be that
- 25:46Speaker 12: third team and maybe even not just the third team
- 25:49Speaker 12: but one of the tops. So fun finish, got some
- 25:53Speaker 12: great football weather tonight.
- 25:55Speaker 11: I'm fired up on this better tonight.
- 25:57Speaker 1: There you go, There you go.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I was thinking, probably we're we'll go with what sweaters
- 26:02Speaker 2: or quarter zips on Saturday morning?
- 26:05Speaker 12: Whatever you say, I follow your lead.
- 26:07Speaker 11: That sounds good to me.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do that sweaters or quarter zips. Sorry, we
- 26:11Speaker 2: just made the decision. It's on tape somewhere, yeah or digitally.
- 26:15Speaker 2: So hey, thanks for the time. I appreciate you. Have
- 26:17Speaker 2: a great call tonight. Thanks Craig, talk to you all right.
- 26:20Speaker 2: That's Roger Wallis. Keep for on a little joining for
- 26:22Speaker 2: the call tonight. It would be a lot of fun
- 26:25Speaker 2: at seven o'clock on kbv O Vista Ridge hosting Huddo.
- 26:29Speaker 2: That's one of the marquee matchups of this weekend and
- 26:33Speaker 2: it's a Thursday night er, so that's that's really cool,
- 26:35Speaker 2: all right. Coming up next, we have Inconceivable here on
- 26:38Speaker 2: a Thursday afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 26:41Speaker 2: Zone and the iHeartRadio app here.
- 26:43Speaker 5: It is now Craig.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Wa second hour of the program here on Sports Radio
- 27:10Speaker 2: AM thirteen hundred the Zone. Glad you could join us
- 27:13Speaker 2: on this Thursday afternoon Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Carman.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Exciting stuff right around the corner Tonight seven o'clock Long
- 27:24Speaker 2: Worn Weekly with Coach Stark. It's the program we recorded
- 27:28Speaker 2: on Wednesday evenings over on campus and a lot of
- 27:32Speaker 2: fun talking about this football team in this matchup with
- 27:35Speaker 2: the Vanderbilt Commodoores on Saturday. Joining us on the program
- 27:40Speaker 2: will be Johnny Nansen, the co defensive coordinator, the guy
- 27:43Speaker 2: who handles the linebackers are playing at another worldly level
- 27:49Speaker 2: right now.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Some of what those guys are doing, especially Anthony Hill.
- 27:54Speaker 2: In addition to that, we'll visit with Jordan Shipley, the
- 27:59Speaker 2: lifetime long horn because he was the last long worn
- 28:02Speaker 2: to return two punts in a season for touchdowns. He
- 28:05Speaker 2: did it in two thousand and nine against Texas Tech
- 28:08Speaker 2: and Colorado.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Spoiler alert.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Our broadcast operations manager Terry Kelly does a fabulous job
- 28:17Speaker 2: of culling the highlights that we use in the show
- 28:21Speaker 2: and other things, and that goes back historically as well.
- 28:24Speaker 2: So when we found out Jordan Shipley was going to
- 28:29Speaker 2: be on the program, the request was made, Hey, can
- 28:32Speaker 2: you guys pull up one of those two pump returns
- 28:36Speaker 2: that he had for a touchdown in two thousand and nine.
- 28:39Speaker 2: One was against Texas Tech, the other one was against Colorado.
- 28:43Speaker 2: So Terry went to diving in to find him and
- 28:46Speaker 2: she found him.
- 28:47Speaker 3: The problem with.
- 28:48Speaker 2: The Texas Tech one was that there was a flag
- 28:54Speaker 2: on the play, and I remember this.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I remember this.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I'm not gonna throw my broadcast crew under the bus. Okay,
- 29:04Speaker 2: I'm not going to do that, but I will tell
- 29:05Speaker 2: you this. At the time, we had a best producer
- 29:09Speaker 2: I've ever worked with, Bill Harwell, the late Bill Harwell.
- 29:13Speaker 2: And Bill had carried with him a yellow flag like
- 29:17Speaker 2: a penalty flag in his back pocket, so if there
- 29:19Speaker 2: was a penalty he would wave it just to let
- 29:21Speaker 2: us know. And but he would do it unobtrusively, kind
- 29:26Speaker 2: of do it out to the side just so I
- 29:27Speaker 2: could see it, but that I would finish the call
- 29:29Speaker 2: and then say there's a flag on the plate, because
- 29:32Speaker 2: you never know, the flag might have not been germane
- 29:35Speaker 2: to what was going on in penalty declined or whatever.
- 29:38Speaker 2: In this particular case, as Shipley takes off of the
- 29:42Speaker 2: plumb return, I had several different people in the booth
- 29:46Speaker 2: all going waving their arms like flag, flag, Like you know,
- 29:49Speaker 2: Bill goes into reach to pull out the flag, but
- 29:52Speaker 2: he was going to do his normal thing out on
- 29:53Speaker 2: the side, but it flew out of his hands and
- 29:55Speaker 2: it flies like right in front of me. So naturally
- 29:58Speaker 2: write in mid sentence, there's a flag on the play
- 30:00Speaker 2: blah blah blah bah. Here's Shipley's in for the touchdown.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the flag was on tax It didn't matter.
- 30:06Speaker 2: So the call you might say, to use internet terminology
- 30:09Speaker 2: was corrupted a little bit. Fortunately, the Colorado one was
- 30:15Speaker 2: clean and it was longer. It was he had to
- 30:17Speaker 2: step out of a couple of tackles. It was kind
- 30:19Speaker 2: of like the Ryan niblewin. So it worked out well.
- 30:23Speaker 2: So you'll hear it tonight if you're listening to the program.
- 30:26Speaker 2: But we'll talk with Jordan Shipley about it and the
- 30:28Speaker 2: science of feeling punts. Sark asks him about, you know,
- 30:32Speaker 2: feeling that punt when guys are bearing down on you
- 30:34Speaker 2: and all that other kind of stuff, and then we
- 30:36Speaker 2: talk about his receiving this. He's still the all time
- 30:38Speaker 2: leading receiver in yardage and or in touchdowns and second
- 30:42Speaker 2: in yard I mean he's either one or two in
- 30:44Speaker 2: about five or six different categories.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Great guy, Jordan Shipley.
- 30:48Speaker 2: So we'll have that tonight on Long One weekly seven
- 30:50Speaker 2: o'clock here on the program.
- 30:51Speaker 1: It re airs tomorrow night. It said, we'll also have
- 30:55Speaker 1: one segment.
- 30:55Speaker 2: We always bring you the opposing teams segment that we
- 30:59Speaker 2: do in the program on this program on Fridays, and
- 31:01Speaker 2: we'll do that on tomorrows show with start speaking in
- 31:07Speaker 2: some pretty specific terms and in depth terms about the
- 31:09Speaker 2: Vanderbilt Commodorees and what they have to do. The World
- 31:13Speaker 2: Series is shifting back to Toronto with the Blue Jays
- 31:18Speaker 2: now up three games to do.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Think about this now.
- 31:21Speaker 2: In this postseason, Toronto, of course had the best overall
- 31:25Speaker 2: record in the American League. They won ninety four ball games,
- 31:31Speaker 2: and as such they drew a buy in the first round.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Then they would have home field throughout the throughout the
- 31:38Speaker 2: American League playoffs and beat the Yankees. Trey Ya Savage,
- 31:43Speaker 2: who did what he did to the Dodgers last night,
- 31:44Speaker 2: did that to the Yankees in the Division Series. Then
- 31:47Speaker 2: they dropped games one and two at home to Seattle.
- 31:50Speaker 2: They go to Seattle, take two out of three, and
- 31:55Speaker 2: then come back home down three games to two and
- 32:00Speaker 2: win the last two games at Rogers Center to win
- 32:03Speaker 2: the American League Championship. So now they go into the
- 32:05Speaker 2: World Series. They played the Dodgers. The Dodgers were the
- 32:08Speaker 2: number three seed, The one seed was Milwaukee, the two
- 32:11Speaker 2: seed was Philadelphia. The Dodgers first swept out Cincinnati in
- 32:16Speaker 2: the wildcard round. Then they take out the Phillies, not
- 32:21Speaker 2: having home field advantage, and take them out three games
- 32:23Speaker 2: to one in a best of five. Then against the
- 32:26Speaker 2: one seed, the Brewers, they sweep them dominant, just get
- 32:29Speaker 2: masterful performances from their starting pitching, and they won it
- 32:34Speaker 2: in four straight over the one seed. They lost in
- 32:40Speaker 2: all of the great pitching, and then Shoe Aotany's unbelievable
- 32:43Speaker 2: final game that he had in there with the three
- 32:45Speaker 2: home runs and the six shoutout innings, was that the
- 32:46Speaker 2: rest of the team really wasn't hit much. Now it
- 32:49Speaker 2: sticks out like a sore thumb in this the way
- 32:53Speaker 2: Toronto would shut them down of the last three games,
- 32:55Speaker 2: including the eighteen inning game that the Dodgers won. So
- 32:59Speaker 2: their struggle to find their offense right now. And now
- 33:04Speaker 2: I know everybody's looking at the defense and the bullpen.
- 33:08Speaker 1: The bullpen defense was kind of floppy last night.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Blake Snell's not looked good in his two starts in
- 33:14Speaker 2: this World Series, and the bullpen kind of became the
- 33:18Speaker 2: Dodger bullpen again, one that struggled throughout the course of
- 33:21Speaker 2: the season. So as a result of that, Dave Roberts,
- 33:24Speaker 2: the manager, was asked last night after the game, are
- 33:27Speaker 2: the bullpen problems catching up to you and your team
- 33:31Speaker 2: now in this series?
- 33:32Speaker 14: Yeah, it's hard because you know, you can only push
- 33:36Speaker 14: a starter so much. I thought Blake emptied the tank,
- 33:41Speaker 14: and you know you have an opportunity with the base
- 33:44Speaker 14: open in the sense in this situation, second base was
- 33:46Speaker 14: led up, and you know, I felt Henriquez was the
- 33:49Speaker 14: guy to get him out and you also have a
- 33:51Speaker 14: chance to get a shout out. I pushed Blake as
- 33:55Speaker 14: much as I pushed him all year, and yeah, you
- 33:58Speaker 14: look at the three games that we lost, it you know,
- 34:02Speaker 14: spiraled on us with guys on base, but guys who
- 34:07Speaker 14: got to be better. They certainly had a good game
- 34:08Speaker 14: in Game four, whatever it was. But yeah, I mean
- 34:14Speaker 14: that's just kind of guys have got to do their jobs.
- 34:17Speaker 14: Everyone's got to do their job. And so right now
- 34:20Speaker 14: we're at elimination and we've got to kind of wipe
- 34:23Speaker 14: the slate clean and find a way to win Game
- 34:25Speaker 14: six and pick up the pieces and see where we're at.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, well, I will tell you this, Dave
- 34:31Speaker 2: Roberts is right about that with regardless pitching. But I
- 34:34Speaker 2: think they would also be the first to tell you
- 34:37Speaker 2: the pitching is put on a more backed up against
- 34:40Speaker 2: the wall because the offense isn't happening right now. Mookie Batts,
- 34:45Speaker 2: who I think is three for twenty now in the
- 34:49Speaker 2: World Series, actually got to hit last night, but he said,
- 34:52Speaker 2: we've got to figure out something.
- 34:53Speaker 4: But you look even at the hits they had last night,
- 34:55Speaker 4: Craig obviously, Kei k Hernandez, the big home run and
- 34:58Speaker 4: then you had two kind of seeing eye infield singles
- 35:01Speaker 4: for ta Oscar.
- 35:02Speaker 1: That was it.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's the Dodgers truck out twelve times. They
- 35:05Speaker 2: managed three hits and seven innings against you, Savage. So yeah,
- 35:11Speaker 2: since it since they swept the Reds in the wildcard round,
- 35:16Speaker 2: this is the Dodgers team batting average team batting average
- 35:19Speaker 2: in the postseason after the Wildcard round because they clubed Cincinnati,
- 35:23Speaker 2: but after that against good teams Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Toronto,
- 35:30Speaker 2: they're batting two to fourteen as a team in thirteen
- 35:34Speaker 2: playoff games, five forty four ops with runners in scoring position.
- 35:39Speaker 2: The nine wins in that stretch are obviously a testament
- 35:42Speaker 2: to the starting rotation that's now being asked to kind
- 35:45Speaker 2: of tote it along. But I will tell you this,
- 35:47Speaker 2: and he said he pushed Blake as far as he could,
- 35:50Speaker 2: and Snell did try to give them all that he could.
- 35:52Speaker 2: But Snell hasn't had command of his breaking ball, and
- 35:55Speaker 2: that's a big part of it. So their backs are
- 35:59Speaker 2: to the wall. Now here's another wrinkle, and then and
- 36:04Speaker 2: we'll take a break of them. We're going to hear
- 36:05Speaker 2: from Sean Milder. Here's another wrinkle about this. Remember I
- 36:08Speaker 2: mentioned that the the Blue Jays won ninety four games,
- 36:11Speaker 2: so they got home field advantage in the American League,
- 36:13Speaker 2: and as such, they at home field avtage in the
- 36:16Speaker 2: World Series by one game. The Dodgers won ninety three.
- 36:20Speaker 2: You don't want to know what the difference was. There
- 36:23Speaker 2: was a series in July at Dodgers Stadium. LA won
- 36:27Speaker 2: the first two games. The bullpen blew the lead late
- 36:31Speaker 2: in the Sunday afternoon game. I was watching that they
- 36:34Speaker 2: lost that game. Didn't think too much about it at
- 36:36Speaker 2: the time, other than the fact that Dodgers weren't playing
- 36:37Speaker 2: well at the time. That one game is the difference
- 36:40Speaker 2: between LA having home field and Toronto having for home field.
- 36:43Speaker 2: So if you think games.
- 36:44Speaker 1: In June and July are meaningless, think again. It can
- 36:47Speaker 1: go a long way.
- 36:48Speaker 4: At middle fifty one, right, you know, you're always going
- 36:51Speaker 4: to win about fifty, you're always going to lose about fifty.
- 36:53Speaker 2: And now the Blue Jays are on the precipice, they
- 36:56Speaker 2: are on the verge if they win them a night.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Now the Dodgers have shout Noble Yamamota going for them,
- 37:01Speaker 2: and they have to have it. So they come back
- 37:03Speaker 2: with their their best guy, who had a complete game
- 37:06Speaker 2: in Game two. But even if they win that game,
- 37:08Speaker 2: now you're to Game seven and you get to Game seven,
- 37:12Speaker 2: and the Dodgers are going to have to come back
- 37:13Speaker 2: with another starter who has not been good in his
- 37:17Speaker 2: two most recent outings.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Tyler Glass now wasn't good.
- 37:21Speaker 2: In Game three in the in the eighteen inning game,
- 37:25Speaker 2: but forgot about that because the game win eighteen innings.
- 37:28Speaker 2: He got no decision, and he wasn't good against Milwaukee
- 37:31Speaker 2: and the NLCS. The Dodgers rallied back and one of
- 37:33Speaker 2: the thing, but he struggled. He didn't get through five innings.
- 37:36Speaker 2: So that would be in game seven if it gets
- 37:41Speaker 2: to that point.
- 37:41Speaker 1: But they're gonna have to win game six to fours.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Game seven more reason you might see Kershaw available for
- 37:46Speaker 4: a quick relief appearance if it gets to that point.
- 37:48Speaker 2: And if it gets game seven, their reports don't be
- 37:53Speaker 2: surprised to see Otani come out of the bullpen for
- 37:55Speaker 2: the first time ever Game seven. Like I said, my
- 38:00Speaker 2: broadcast partner in Long Run Baseball, Keep Morland put it best.
- 38:02Speaker 2: He played. You know, he was in the bigs for
- 38:04Speaker 2: thirteen years. It was a three time all American Baseball Texas.
- 38:07Speaker 2: You know what he always says, when you get to
- 38:08Speaker 2: a game seven or the final game of a regional
- 38:11Speaker 2: everybody's got their spikes on.
- 38:13Speaker 11: Yep.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Well in the Nobbies, everybody's got the spikes on there
- 38:16Speaker 2: forget for the final game.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Didn't this whole baseball season of sorts begin with Otani
- 38:22Speaker 4: coming out of the bullpen getting us safe to seal
- 38:24Speaker 4: the World Baseball Classic in Japan?
- 38:25Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 38:25Speaker 1: How about that? How about that?
- 38:27Speaker 3: So chance for some so we'll see chance for some
- 38:30Speaker 3: symmetry there.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but la.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Is gonna have to and uh and by the way,
- 38:34Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember who it is. It's pitching for Toronto.
- 38:36Speaker 2: He's not exactly Chop Liver will be Gosman in games
- 38:42Speaker 2: it's Gosman and and uh, you know he was. He
- 38:46Speaker 2: wasn't bad in Game two. It's just Y'ama Mota was
- 38:50Speaker 2: incredible so the Dodgers. In fact, he didn't give up
- 38:55Speaker 2: that much. It was the bullpen for Toronto that gave
- 38:57Speaker 2: up the bulk of the Dodger runs. Later in the
- 38:59Speaker 2: ball game, when Will Smith hit the home run and
- 39:01Speaker 2: Max Untsey hit the home run, you know you had
- 39:04Speaker 2: most of the damage done later in the game, So
- 39:07Speaker 2: Gosmin in game six. So it's not chop liver now
- 39:11Speaker 2: for the Brewers, I mean for the Blue Jays, But
- 39:13Speaker 2: the Dodgers have got to have another outstanding performance from Yamamoto,
- 39:17Speaker 2: and they have got to find some offense they don't.
- 39:20Speaker 2: It won't matter how well Yamamoto pitches unless he pitches
- 39:24Speaker 2: a no hitter.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Otherwise they're going to lose, all right.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Up next, we're gonna hear from Texas men's basketball coach
- 39:30Speaker 2: Sean Miller right here on thirteen under the zone in
- 39:32Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app.
- 39:39Speaker 1: This is I think one of the.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Really underrated songs that Billy Joel did that Kurt he
- 39:47Speaker 2: used to play it in concerts, doesn't do so much anymore.
- 39:49Speaker 2: And of course now since he's had health issues, he's
- 39:51Speaker 2: been off tour for a while. But it's called Summer
- 39:54Speaker 2: Highland Falls, and it's off of the Turnstiles album, and
- 39:58Speaker 2: I think that's part of the reason why doesn't get
- 40:00Speaker 2: some of the aarplay back even back then. Also because
- 40:04Speaker 2: he had a mega, mega block buster hit off of Turnstiles,
- 40:09Speaker 2: which he wrote about twenty minutes is as the story
- 40:12Speaker 2: goes and that's New York State of Mind, which that
- 40:18Speaker 2: whole thing came from him coming back from California after
- 40:21Speaker 2: he'd done Piano Man and all that stuff about his
- 40:23Speaker 2: time back there. But he was coming back. He was
- 40:26Speaker 2: sick of La and wanted to get back to New
- 40:28Speaker 2: York and he took a bus home. He still have
- 40:32Speaker 2: not broken it up big and was and was on
- 40:35Speaker 2: his way back home. And he had a house there
- 40:40Speaker 2: in Highland Falls in upstate New York. And that's why
- 40:42Speaker 2: it's called Summer Highland Falls.
- 40:44Speaker 3: I love that song. I'm so glad that you appreciate
- 40:47Speaker 3: it well.
- 40:47Speaker 1: And it's it's a sad song.
- 40:49Speaker 2: It's it's about, you know, couples who drift apart, you know,
- 40:52Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But it's but it's really done.
- 40:56Speaker 2: The piccolo trumpet that comes in later they have I
- 40:58Speaker 2: think is just beautiful. You know.
- 41:00Speaker 4: I like knowing that he wrote it on a bus.
- 41:01Speaker 4: You can kind of feel it moving underneath the song.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Same thing with New York State of Mind. At New
- 41:06Speaker 2: York State of Mind kind of came to him in
- 41:08Speaker 2: the deal. And the way the story goes, he gets
- 41:12Speaker 2: off the bus at the bus station, he takes a
- 41:14Speaker 2: taxi up to his home. He gets out of he
- 41:16Speaker 2: races into his house and says, I gotta find a piano.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Got to pay They had just moved into he didn't
- 41:22Speaker 2: know where the piano was. They got to get to
- 41:23Speaker 2: a piano because he had it in his mind. And
- 41:25Speaker 2: that's how he did the New York State of Mind
- 41:27Speaker 2: in about twenty minutes. And he was working on that
- 41:29Speaker 2: song as well. So anyway, a little bit of music
- 41:31Speaker 2: history there.
- 41:32Speaker 4: That's going to keep playing my favorite songs coming back
- 41:34Speaker 4: and you'll teach me all about it.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Wow, I'm a big billy Joel fans folks. Now, all right,
- 41:40Speaker 2: Long Warren basketball team is getting ready to embark on
- 41:43Speaker 2: a new era. Sean Miller, a new head coach coming
- 41:46Speaker 2: down from Xavier, getting ready to start his first season.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Texas will open the season on Tuesday night in Charlotte
- 41:55Speaker 2: against Duke. So they're playing six ring team in the
- 41:57Speaker 2: country in their backyard. So that's going to be a
- 41:59Speaker 2: very very difficult. But he was asked, uh and and
- 42:03Speaker 2: he did a media zom today and here's his opening comments.
- 42:07Speaker 2: He's also going to let you know a little bit
- 42:11Speaker 2: about the injury status because they had some injury status
- 42:15Speaker 2: in Modes Pokatitis, who is their sophomore transfer from Lithuania,
- 42:20Speaker 2: and Lesina Treiori, who is a grad transfer, and both
- 42:25Speaker 2: of those guys had gotten banged up.
- 42:27Speaker 1: So and that's a seventh foot and a six nine guy.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Yeah, same position. Yeah.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Yeah, So he gives us an update on those as
- 42:34Speaker 2: well as starting to get his guys ready for the
- 42:37Speaker 2: Duke Blue Devils.
- 42:38Speaker 15: Yeah, I wanted to start off just on a couple
- 42:41Speaker 15: couple of fronts. One just to update you know, our
- 42:44Speaker 15: our team in terms of our health and where we stand.
- 42:48Speaker 7: Uh as I think a lot of you know.
- 42:50Speaker 15: We went into two unfortunate injuries about three over three
- 42:55Speaker 15: weeks ago with Lesina trey Orri and and mod Ore
- 43:00Speaker 15: to five men, and in both of our closed scrimmages,
- 43:04Speaker 15: neither of those two guys participated, which made both of
- 43:08Speaker 15: those scrimmages problematic. And it's also no doubt about it
- 43:13Speaker 15: put us in a unique situation of the thirty practices
- 43:17Speaker 15: to have you know, in essence about three week period
- 43:19Speaker 15: of time with you know, you're kind of like your
- 43:22Speaker 15: two five men that are going to play a lot
- 43:23Speaker 15: of minutes, both out at the same time. I think
- 43:27Speaker 15: the good news is in Modess's case, he's not only
- 43:32Speaker 15: returned to practice but doing really well. He had an
- 43:35Speaker 15: ankle sprain of significance, but a lot of the bad
- 43:39Speaker 15: is behind him, and I think he's not only set
- 43:42Speaker 15: to play, but my hope is he can have a
- 43:45Speaker 15: good four or five six days before we begin, before
- 43:49Speaker 15: we played Duke in terms of Lessina get a mid
- 43:52Speaker 15: foot sprain injury, and that, you know, is a little
- 43:57Speaker 15: bit more complicated simply because, as you know, a year
- 44:00Speaker 15: goal he missed the season with an acl on his
- 44:02Speaker 15: other leg, So we're just making sure that we don't
- 44:05Speaker 15: put him in a bad position. And either way, we
- 44:08Speaker 15: also are anticipating him being available for our season opener,
- 44:13Speaker 15: and he too has returned to practice, more in a
- 44:17Speaker 15: limited capacity than.
- 44:19Speaker 7: Modest, but no doubt about it.
- 44:22Speaker 15: You know, selfishly, as a coach, you want your entire
- 44:24Speaker 15: roster to be able to practice every day. Those two
- 44:27Speaker 15: guys missing the time that they missed has really hurt everybody.
- 44:33Speaker 15: If there's a silver lining in it, you know, I
- 44:35Speaker 15: think John Clark and Nick Cody have gotten a lot
- 44:38Speaker 15: of additional reps. They played a majority of the scrimmage
- 44:42Speaker 15: minutes against both SMU and TCU, and you know, we've
- 44:46Speaker 15: we've learned to kind of like play without those guys
- 44:51Speaker 15: during their absence, but we are very much looking forward
- 44:54Speaker 15: to getting them back full time, and especially from their
- 44:59Speaker 15: perspective if both guys are very important to our team,
- 45:02Speaker 15: meaning Lesina and Modes. In terms of the Duke game,
- 45:06Speaker 15: as you know, the Duke game was scheduled before I
- 45:08Speaker 15: became the head coach here. We look forward to the
- 45:13Speaker 15: challenge of playing, if not the best program in America,
- 45:19Speaker 15: certainly one of them. And we have an amazing amount of
- 45:21Speaker 15: respect for Duke, and I really have a lot of
- 45:24Speaker 15: respect for John Shire as a coach. I think the
- 45:26Speaker 15: job that he's done taking over for Coach k is
- 45:30Speaker 15: in itself, on its face, superior. I don't know if
- 45:35Speaker 15: anybody could do a much better job than John has
- 45:38Speaker 15: done kind of taking Duke to taking over at Duke
- 45:42Speaker 15: and then leading them here to the future. So we
- 45:45Speaker 15: know it's going to be a difficult challenge, but I
- 45:47Speaker 15: think at Texas to go where we want to go
- 45:50Speaker 15: and be the program we want to become. Part of
- 45:53Speaker 15: that path is you have to be able to play
- 45:55Speaker 15: against the best and Duke certainly represents that.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I no doubt about that. They're going to play
- 46:00Speaker 2: game at the Spectrum Center. That's where the Charlotte Hornets
- 46:04Speaker 2: play at the NBA. That's where Texas played in the NCAA
- 46:06Speaker 2: Tournament a couple of years ago when they won the
- 46:09Speaker 2: first round game against Colorado State and then fell to
- 46:11Speaker 2: Tennessee in the second round.
- 46:13Speaker 1: So they have played on that floor.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Before next He was asked by that this game is
- 46:17Speaker 2: actually called the Dick Vital Classic, named an honor obviously
- 46:21Speaker 2: of Dick Vital, the longtime ESPN broadcaster who has come
- 46:25Speaker 2: back from cancer and expects to be able to work
- 46:29Speaker 2: again this year, and coach Miller has asked about Dick Vital,
- 46:34Speaker 2: what he means to the game and his impact on
- 46:36Speaker 2: the sport.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:37Speaker 15: You know, when I think of Dick Vitel, I think
- 46:39Speaker 15: it starts with what he's done for pediatric cancer. You know,
- 46:42Speaker 15: the amount of money that he's raised, his event, which
- 46:45Speaker 15: has become a signature event towards, you know, changing people's lives.
- 46:50Speaker 15: And it's incredible what his foundation has done, what his
- 46:54Speaker 15: event has done, and just it all starts obviously with him.
- 46:58Speaker 7: I think the second part of it.
- 47:00Speaker 15: Is, you know what he's meant to college basketball over
- 47:03Speaker 15: what four or five decades now. And I remember back
- 47:07Speaker 15: when I was a high school player playing in a
- 47:10Speaker 15: Dopper Dan round Ball Classic in Pittsburgh, and you know,
- 47:13Speaker 15: just being excited on many levels, one of which was
- 47:16Speaker 15: because Dick Vitel was on the he was the commentator
- 47:21Speaker 15: on the game. And what it feels like to have
- 47:23Speaker 15: him say your name and talk about the game that
- 47:26Speaker 15: you're in. That's I think how we all felt. And
- 47:29Speaker 15: that was in the mid nineteen eighties. But you know,
- 47:32Speaker 15: his passion for college basketball is knowledge. He made the
- 47:35Speaker 15: game better and certainly impacted coaches, players, teams, and I
- 47:39Speaker 15: think he really created an excitement with the fan base
- 47:42Speaker 15: around the world to point them towards college basketball. So
- 47:47Speaker 15: the impact is immense. I look at him as a
- 47:50Speaker 15: Hall of Famer and what he does, and I'm honored,
- 47:54Speaker 15: and I think we are honored as a program to
- 47:56Speaker 15: be a part of this game, all right.
- 47:58Speaker 2: He was also then with a question about Duke and
- 48:01Speaker 2: that outstanding six nine freshman incoming freshman Cameron Boozer, his
- 48:06Speaker 2: impressions of Cam Boozer, and is that one of the
- 48:10Speaker 2: reasons why he brought in Dalen Swain when he came
- 48:14Speaker 2: in from Xavier to guard guys just like him.
- 48:17Speaker 15: Yeah, my early impressions of Boozer is, you know, he's
- 48:21Speaker 15: like that generational freshman. You know, there's always the number
- 48:25Speaker 15: one pick in the draft, not all of them are
- 48:27Speaker 15: the same. You know, there's always the best freshman that
- 48:30Speaker 15: plays in college basketball, but from year to year that
- 48:34Speaker 15: varies on actually who that great freshman is. You know,
- 48:38Speaker 15: I look at Cam as the best of the best.
- 48:41Speaker 15: His ability to rebound, you know, just look at the
- 48:44Speaker 15: rebounds that he's had in the first couple of games
- 48:46Speaker 15: he's played. You don't see many players, let alone freshman,
- 48:50Speaker 15: able to do that. And I also think that John
- 48:53Speaker 15: Schier uses him in a very intelligent way, playing both
- 48:57Speaker 15: the four and the five, and makes the match up
- 49:00Speaker 15: with Cam even more difficult than just his already unbelievable ability.
- 49:06Speaker 15: So I think it's unfair to even give Dalen that assignment.
- 49:11Speaker 15: I think you have to guard him as a team,
- 49:13Speaker 15: You have to run multiple people, and I think the
- 49:16Speaker 15: biggest point is you just have to control his second shots.
- 49:20Speaker 15: You know, if he can get five, four, six second shots,
- 49:24Speaker 15: all of those offensive rebounds translate into very bad things
- 49:28Speaker 15: for your team. So how can we do blocking him out,
- 49:32Speaker 15: keeping him off the glass? He follows his own shot
- 49:34Speaker 15: in a really big way, so he misses, he gets
- 49:37Speaker 15: it back and goes back up. We have to be
- 49:40Speaker 15: aware of that and do the best job that we
- 49:42Speaker 15: possibly can. I think that's a big starting point with him.
- 49:45Speaker 15: You know, just how many second shots does he get?
- 49:48Speaker 15: He's like a one man wrecking crew with that stat alone.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Back to talking about his own team, he was asked
- 49:54Speaker 2: about how he feels his team is acclimating to the
- 49:59Speaker 2: offense that he's bringing in given all the injuries they've
- 50:02Speaker 2: had to deal with.
- 50:03Speaker 15: I'll go back to Lissina and modest being out. You know,
- 50:06Speaker 15: I think when you get a new job, you're a
- 50:08Speaker 15: new coach, new staff. You know, these thirty practices in
- 50:13Speaker 15: forty two days. They're important to everybody. But I would
- 50:17Speaker 15: use the word crucial, and it's crucial to us because
- 50:20Speaker 15: we just don't have We just have such a lack
- 50:23Speaker 15: of familiarity, right, So when you have two players, especially
- 50:28Speaker 15: they both play the same position out for this extended period,
- 50:32Speaker 15: that has not helped our progress offensively, and unfortunately that's
- 50:36Speaker 15: just that's where we're at.
- 50:38Speaker 7: The good news is everybody else is learning and growing.
- 50:42Speaker 15: And the other part of it is, I think we're
- 50:44Speaker 15: going to have both guys back and hopefully they can
- 50:46Speaker 15: have a great stretch of health. But that hasn't helped
- 50:50Speaker 15: what we're trying to build and what we're trying to grow.
- 50:53Speaker 7: Time is not on our side when it comes to that.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Hey, all right, we'll hear some more from Seawn mill
- 51:00Speaker 2: are coming up but next hour. But up next we've
- 51:03Speaker 2: got some more college football notes to get to when
- 51:04Speaker 2: we continue here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 51:07Speaker 2: Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
- 51:12Speaker 1: All right, is this one of your favorites? Is that
- 51:14Speaker 1: what you're hitting me with here?
- 51:15Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 51:16Speaker 4: Little Sam Fender with seventeen going on their lil homage
- 51:20Speaker 4: to a seventeen point comeback by the Texas longmark.
- 51:22Speaker 1: There you go. All right, I like it.
- 51:24Speaker 2: I like the what you're thinking college football notes. First
- 51:29Speaker 2: of all, when we were talking earlier about the coaching
- 51:35Speaker 2: vacancies and Matt Rule was one of those candidates listed
- 51:42Speaker 2: or at least target possible targets for Penn State because
- 51:45Speaker 2: he played there was there. Yeah, that's off the table.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Now you mentioned you'd heard rumors of an extension. Is
- 51:51Speaker 2: now official to your contract extension Nebraska's given Matt rule.
- 51:57Speaker 1: That'll take him through twenty thirty two.
- 52:02Speaker 4: Wow, that's a lot for a guy that hasn't gotten
- 52:05Speaker 4: the signature wins there.
- 52:06Speaker 3: But in this cycle, you got to keep your guys,
- 52:08Speaker 3: don't you.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Yeah, if you want to continue to build it. He's
- 52:11Speaker 2: a builder. It's just taken longer to build, I think
- 52:13Speaker 2: than he was hoping or planning on. What's also interesting
- 52:17Speaker 2: to note about this is that his buyout has been bumped.
- 52:22Speaker 2: It was five million dollars a month. Now it's fifteen
- 52:25Speaker 2: million on the bump.
- 52:27Speaker 11: So.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Probably not going to take another job during the cycle.
- 52:31Speaker 2: As a result of that. He said his happiness his
- 52:38Speaker 2: family's happiness in Nebraska as the primary reasoning behind why
- 52:44Speaker 2: he agreed to the deal. He's in his third year,
- 52:46Speaker 2: they're six and two this year. He did lead the
- 52:49Speaker 2: program to its first Bowl game in eight years last year,
- 52:54Speaker 2: and he continues to say that the program has the
- 53:00Speaker 2: potential to return to the greatness that they had in
- 53:04Speaker 2: the past. Then and like I said, he frequently was
- 53:07Speaker 2: linked to the job opening at Penn State, but that
- 53:11Speaker 2: pretty much takes his name out of contention. Uh, not
- 53:15Speaker 2: only for that, but for the other eight Power Conference
- 53:17Speaker 2: jobs that have opened so far this year. So, by
- 53:21Speaker 2: the way, this new deal does not include any change
- 53:24Speaker 2: in base compensations when the bump when the rule when
- 53:27Speaker 2: they are raised, just gave him an extension.
- 53:30Speaker 1: It does.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Offer additional incentive for base salary if Nebraska reaches the
- 53:37Speaker 2: College Football Playoff. There's a new clause in this deal
- 53:42Speaker 2: that states that every time Nebraska qualifies for the CFP,
- 53:48Speaker 2: his base salary on the deal increases by one million dollars.
- 53:52Speaker 2: So if he gets them into the playoff, well, it
- 53:55Speaker 2: won't happen this year. But if he gets them into
- 53:57Speaker 2: the well, I mean if they win out, find a
- 54:01Speaker 2: way to get in the Big Ten Championship game and
- 54:04Speaker 2: then like beat Ohio State and win the Big Ten
- 54:07Speaker 2: championship or Indiana, you know.
- 54:09Speaker 3: Win over Cincinnati's aging nicely.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Yeah it is, it is.
- 54:13Speaker 2: So if if they did that those sorts of things,
- 54:15Speaker 2: then yeah, they could get in and he gets a
- 54:17Speaker 2: million dollar bump.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Yeah, they have to win.
- 54:18Speaker 4: They have to beat usc this weekend, then Ucla, Penn State,
- 54:22Speaker 4: and Iowa who's playing some good football.
- 54:23Speaker 3: So yeah, they all be easy for him.
- 54:25Speaker 2: So they'd have to run the table that might I
- 54:28Speaker 2: don't know all the type Breakerstan where everything's tends on
- 54:31Speaker 2: that with a Big Ten right now, but that might
- 54:33Speaker 2: get them into the Big Ten championship against either or
- 54:37Speaker 2: Hio State or Indiana.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Yeah, against one of the big bads, so we'll see.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and then they'd have to win that game to
- 54:44Speaker 2: get into the playoff a.
- 54:46Speaker 3: Lah Clemson last season.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, all right. So anyway, his salary, I mean,
- 54:54Speaker 2: it's similar to the client Texas has right now. Larwers
- 54:57Speaker 2: have to be three top ten teams fan to built
- 54:59Speaker 2: this Saturday. Then then they have to after an open date,
- 55:04Speaker 2: have to be number five Georgia, so it's number five,
- 55:06Speaker 2: then the number nine, number five. Then they come home,
- 55:10Speaker 2: they'd have an unranked Arkansas team a rivalry game, and
- 55:13Speaker 2: then they'd have to be Texas A and M who
- 55:14Speaker 2: currently is number three in the country. We're going to
- 55:17Speaker 2: hear Sarks speak to that coming up next hour on this.
- 55:20Speaker 2: But his salary, Matt rules salary during the course of
- 55:24Speaker 2: this deal has an average annual value of more than
- 55:29Speaker 2: eleven point seven million dollars, and that includes retention bonuses,
- 55:33Speaker 2: and that puts him the highest echelon of college coaches
- 55:35Speaker 2: of the course of the deal. So they like him
- 55:39Speaker 2: to matt Rule and want to hold on to him,
- 55:41Speaker 2: and he wants to stay.
- 55:42Speaker 1: So there it is.
- 55:43Speaker 2: There's some job security there. Okay, there's another story you're
- 55:47Speaker 2: going to get to here. We are all very very
- 55:53Speaker 2: familiar with. If you follow college football and a half
- 55:56Speaker 2: of the past couple of years, you're quite familiar with
- 55:59Speaker 2: everything with the name Connor Stallions. You're very familiar with
- 56:03Speaker 2: his role and that the signs dealing scandal stuff at
- 56:07Speaker 2: Michigan and now Michigan got punished for this, and Stallion's
- 56:10Speaker 2: basically given a death penalty in terms of being an
- 56:13Speaker 2: assistant college football.
- 56:15Speaker 3: Is he watching us right now? Are we clear here?
- 56:17Speaker 1: I think we're okay? Okay, where we are?
- 56:18Speaker 3: All right? No one can see my my monitor for
- 56:21Speaker 3: what's coming up next, you know.
- 56:23Speaker 1: I think we're okay there, all right. So here's the thing.
- 56:28Speaker 2: One of the instances cited in the NCAA report when
- 56:34Speaker 2: they punished Michigan was when he was seen on the
- 56:37Speaker 2: sidelines for Central Michigan when Central Michigan was playing Michigan State.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Now Michigan wasn't playing Central Michigan on down the road,
- 56:48Speaker 2: but obviously they they were going to play Michigan State.
- 56:51Speaker 2: So that's that was, you know, one of the things
- 56:54Speaker 2: that was cited in the report. So Michigan gets punished
- 56:57Speaker 2: for this. Well, he was seen wearing Central Michigan coaching
- 57:02Speaker 2: gear on the sidelines of Central Michigan. And you might think,
- 57:08Speaker 2: they're so, why in the world would they do that,
- 57:12Speaker 2: How how could they pull that off?
- 57:14Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you. Jim mcelwaine.
- 57:19Speaker 2: It was the head coach at the time, and he
- 57:23Speaker 2: had been remember his Stars on the Rise, he'd been
- 57:25Speaker 2: in Colorado State and then went to Florida and work
- 57:28Speaker 2: and you.
- 57:28Speaker 3: Know all that kind of st Yeah, o c under saban. Yep.
- 57:31Speaker 2: Absolutely. Now he's the former coach at Central Michigan. Doesn't
- 57:36Speaker 2: mean he's not in trouble for this. Jim mceawaine, three
- 57:40Speaker 2: of his former staff members and the Chippewas program will
- 57:43Speaker 2: face NCAA penalties for their roles in allowing Connor Stallions
- 57:48Speaker 2: to be on their sideline during that game two years
- 57:51Speaker 2: ago against Michigan State.
- 57:52Speaker 3: Good because he wasn't he didn't just spawn there. He
- 57:55Speaker 3: had to be allowed there.
- 57:56Speaker 2: Well, here's how, here's how I rolled out, and he
- 58:00Speaker 2: acknowledged earlier this year on social media they knew almost
- 58:03Speaker 2: every signal opponents used in seven games over two seasons,
- 58:06Speaker 2: including Michigan's twenty twenty three National championship season. All right,
- 58:11Speaker 2: so here's where the Central Michigan Park comes in. Mcaway
- 58:16Speaker 2: was the head coach and along with three former CMU.
- 58:21Speaker 1: As they call him Central Michigan, Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
- 58:24Speaker 2: And the university agreed to take the deal first offered
- 58:28Speaker 2: by the NCAA Enforcement Staff on Sportsmanship and then later
- 58:32Speaker 2: approved by the Governing Bodies Committee on Infractions, which closes
- 58:35Speaker 2: the book on one of these strange scandals. So the
- 58:39Speaker 2: nineteen page report was released today. This is what the
- 58:44Speaker 2: NCAA found. Former quarterbacks coach Jack Costner bypassed the program's
- 58:52Speaker 2: normal procedures by requesting extra coaching gear from Nate Mason,
- 58:59Speaker 2: the former coordinator of athletic equipment operations. There's you know
- 59:02Speaker 2: you've seen going back to the equipment cage there and say, hey,
- 59:06Speaker 2: I need another I need another pullover you win shirt
- 59:10Speaker 2: and Anita had and I need what do you need
- 59:13Speaker 2: that for?
- 59:13Speaker 1: Coach?
- 59:14Speaker 2: I just need I got a guest coming, Okay, So
- 59:17Speaker 2: Costler then asked Mike McGee, the former director of recruiting,
- 59:21Speaker 2: to give the clothing and a sideline pass to his friend,
- 59:26Speaker 2: Connor Stallions. Although Costner had used an alias to avoid
- 59:30Speaker 2: detection before kickoff, the NCAA wrote McGee was unaware of
- 59:35Speaker 2: whom exactly the gear was four, but he knew it
- 59:38Speaker 2: was for a friend of Costner's who was skilled in
- 59:41Speaker 2: deciphering signals during the game. Stallion student close proximity to
- 59:46Speaker 2: McGee and the other football staff. Given his staff's direct
- 59:49Speaker 2: involvement in the arrangement, Jim mcawaine, former football head coach,
- 59:53Speaker 2: is responsible for their violations under the head coaching responsibility legislation.
- 59:58Speaker 3: Yep, Buck's got to stop somewhere.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Will Costner, the guy who requested the gear, He got
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: a four year show cause, meaning any school that hired
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: him had the NCAA approval and must also demonstrate why
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: it should not be penalized for hiring him in the
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: first place. He's also banned from all athletically related activities
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: for the first year and fifty percent of the second year,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: and would face the suspension of fifty percent of the
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: football season in his.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Second year aka go coach high School Right.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Like Connor Stallions, Mason McGee were given two year show
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: cause orders and will be restricted from all athletically related
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: activities in the first year. They would face suspensions for
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: thirty percent of the football games during the second year. Mcawain,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: by the way, is now a special assistant to the
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: athletic director at CMU. He's a former head coach, but
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: he's still employed by the university. The athletic director is
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Amy Follen, who used to be the director of compliance here.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: She was the director of compliance at Texas before becoming
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: the athletic director. Mcawaane received a two year show calls
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: or he would be restricted from all football coaching duties
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: during the first year and would be suspended from thirty
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: percent of the football games during the first year and
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: twenty percent in the second year. Central Michigan also will
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: be placed on two years of probation. They have to
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: pay a fine of thirty thousand dollars in addition to
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: one percent of the football budget. So yeah, they got
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: in trouble for being accessories to the crime.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: There you go if you will, wow.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: So before we get to the break It is time
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: for our DJC law injury updates, which has certainly been
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: a great deal of conversation obviously this week for the
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: long worn football team. So we can tell you from
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: the SEC Student Athletic Availability report we mentioned this earlier.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Arch Manning is listed as questionable right now. We'll hear
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: more about his situation from Sark coming up next hour.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: As well as Michael Tapp. Both have been able to
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: practice this week.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: Edge rusher Lance Jackson and center Cole Hudson also listed
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: as questionable. Aaron Butler wide receivers listed as profitable. So
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: there it is your d j C loll injury update.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap by hour number two. I'm
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: thirteen under the zone.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Okay, here we go with the third and final.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Hour of the program. Here, what are you gonna do
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: with your Thursday night tonight.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Prep spotting boards?
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: There you go, getting ready to ready to rock and
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: roll tomorrow for the biggest game of the bass Drop season.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Yeah, big.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Big matchup for bass Drop in Flugerville tomorrow night in
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: that district. And there's lots of other important games and
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: we mentioned the one where we had Roger Walls on
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: in the first hour of the program about that Vista
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: Ridgehuddo game that'll be televised by kbv O tonight.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: That should be an awful lot of fun.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe a batt'll flip around with Thursday night football
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: and the backdrop for me with no baseball tonight, we're
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: playing We've got the Ravens and the Dolphins with Lamar
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: Jackson returning for Baltimore.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: Okay, it's not it's not a popcorn match.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: Up, Yeah, right, right exactly. World Series, of course, is
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: a travel day. Shifting back to Toronto where the Blue
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Jays now hold eight three games to two lead. Tray
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Savage was tremendous, seven innings, scattered, three hits, struck out. Well,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: this is a rookie who started his year in a
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: ball down there. I believe it was the Jupiter Hammerheads
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: he was pitching for. But he was there at a
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: ball and then moved up the ladder each step the
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: way and now doing great things in the World Series,
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: And was asked, you know, how fresh can you be?
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: You know, go back, You've got a travel day to
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: day and then Game six tomorrow. Could he be ready
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: if the Jays maybe needed an inning or two.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Out of him? Yeah. I mean, tomorrow is a full
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: recovery day.
- 1:03:44Speaker 10: Get to a place where myself and the staff here
- 1:03:48Speaker 10: feels comfortable with me. Mentally, I'll be prepared for Game six.
- 1:03:54Speaker 10: But I mean I'm just ready for whatever's next.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: If there is a next, all right, there won't be
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: a next for the Dodgers if they don't win tomorrow night.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: And Dave Roberts was asked to give an overall for
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: his overall outlook on where they are, having dropped too
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: in a row now and they're down three games to
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: two and they have to go back to Toronto, and
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: his thoughts on their chances to still win this.
- 1:04:21Speaker 14: There's a fight in there, there's a compete that I
- 1:04:24Speaker 14: think there's more in there.
- 1:04:25Speaker 7: I know there's more in there.
- 1:04:28Speaker 14: You know, we've won two games in a row, but
- 1:04:30Speaker 14: again it just comes down to one game. So I
- 1:04:31Speaker 14: think that we've been in a lot of elimination games
- 1:04:35Speaker 14: and we found a way to come to the other side,
- 1:04:36Speaker 14: get on to the other side. So I expect Yamamota
- 1:04:40Speaker 14: to throw well, but you know, we still got to
- 1:04:43Speaker 14: take it abat and play catch a baseball, convert outs
- 1:04:46Speaker 14: and we play a good, clean game.
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: I feel good about our chances.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: All right, So we'll see. That'll be tomorrow night at
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: seven o'clock. Here's some more from Sean Miller, the Texas
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: men's basketball coach. We heard a little bit from him
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: last hour as the Long Warns are finalizing the preseason
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: preparations getting ready for the season opener on Tuesday night
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: in Charlotte against the Blue Devils. He was asked about
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: this rule about the G League players who can sign
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: with college teams and his thoughts on that in terms.
- 1:05:17Speaker 15: Of the G League news, I don't even know if
- 1:05:20Speaker 15: I have the proper response to it. I was really surprised.
- 1:05:24Speaker 15: I think as you read and educate yourself more on
- 1:05:27Speaker 15: why and how this has happened, you know that leads
- 1:05:30Speaker 15: me to international basketball, and I just think the byproduct
- 1:05:35Speaker 15: of the G League is one part of it. But
- 1:05:37Speaker 15: I think what you're going to continue to see is
- 1:05:40Speaker 15: ready made international players who made a lot of money,
- 1:05:44Speaker 15: who are now two, three, four years in the EuroLeague,
- 1:05:49Speaker 15: in the highest leagues in international space, come to college
- 1:05:57Speaker 15: and now be another version of a really ready impact
- 1:06:00Speaker 15: to transfer. You know, so far the international recruiting, you
- 1:06:05Speaker 15: have to put them in a category of a high
- 1:06:06Speaker 15: school player, whether they're young and they're coming here to
- 1:06:09Speaker 15: go to college for the first time. You know, that's
- 1:06:11Speaker 15: the majority of who you've seen enter this space. But
- 1:06:16Speaker 15: the G BIG is one part of this. What it's
- 1:06:18Speaker 15: going to do, I think is is going to put
- 1:06:20Speaker 15: some really ready made again twenty one year old, twenty
- 1:06:24Speaker 15: two year old pros who come to college and maybe
- 1:06:27Speaker 15: not have four years, but can be more of an
- 1:06:30Speaker 15: all conference player on day one. So I think, like, yeah,
- 1:06:36Speaker 15: it's going to continue to go for that direction.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Okay, all right.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Next, he was asked what he's learned about his team
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: in the close scrimmages, even with their adversity.
- 1:06:46Speaker 15: Yeah, no, I think they have a group that's really coachable,
- 1:06:49Speaker 15: that wants to learn, wants to grow, wants.
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: To be a together group.
- 1:06:56Speaker 15: Being a new coach in the season of twenty five
- 1:06:58Speaker 15: twenty six comes with it's set of challenges, and I
- 1:07:02Speaker 15: would just say to you guys, like we're going to
- 1:07:04Speaker 15: be a very difficult team to judge in the months
- 1:07:07Speaker 15: of November and December. In my best attempt and I
- 1:07:10Speaker 15: think all of our collective best attempt to be the
- 1:07:13Speaker 15: best that we can be, we have some limitations simply
- 1:07:18Speaker 15: because we just haven't been together and through experiences long enough.
- 1:07:22Speaker 7: You know, we just don't have enough of those.
- 1:07:24Speaker 15: So I think the silver lining when you watch our group,
- 1:07:27Speaker 15: but I hope we bring to life for everybody, is
- 1:07:30Speaker 15: we're a team that continues to develop and get better
- 1:07:33Speaker 15: as we go along, and that we hit our stride
- 1:07:37Speaker 15: at the right time with continued good health and just
- 1:07:40Speaker 15: constant work and improvement. But the best you know, you
- 1:07:43Speaker 15: talk about you want to be a team that grows
- 1:07:46Speaker 15: as the season goes on and gets better and improves
- 1:07:49Speaker 15: and hits its stride at the right time. You know,
- 1:07:51Speaker 15: in my mind, we really don't have a choice, Like
- 1:07:54Speaker 15: that's what we have to do. And I think that
- 1:07:57Speaker 15: the more we play games, the longer we are together,
- 1:08:00Speaker 15: I believe that will be a better team, a more
- 1:08:03Speaker 15: competitive team, and a team that can win bigger games
- 1:08:07Speaker 15: later in the year. That doesn't mean we're starting off
- 1:08:10Speaker 15: with a bunch of excuses or you know, don't feel
- 1:08:12Speaker 15: like we can do it. But I think you guys
- 1:08:15Speaker 15: know what I mean when I say time isn't on
- 1:08:17Speaker 15: our side.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about his guards, the ones you
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: have and who's really stood out and led the team
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: in the scrimmages.
- 1:08:25Speaker 15: You know, I don't know if one necessarily stood out,
- 1:08:27Speaker 15: but you know, obviously, I think when you look at
- 1:08:29Speaker 15: the strength of our team, you have to point to
- 1:08:32Speaker 15: our guard play.
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: And our experience.
- 1:08:34Speaker 15: You know, the three guys that played here at Texas
- 1:08:37Speaker 15: a year ago, you know, Tremond, Kendall and Jordan, they've
- 1:08:41Speaker 15: been constance for us, not just in the two scrimmages,
- 1:08:45Speaker 15: but I think every day they put a lot of
- 1:08:47Speaker 15: good work in their experience, shows and shines forward. I
- 1:08:52Speaker 15: think for me as a coach, I'm just trying to
- 1:08:55Speaker 15: really learn them, to know how to bring out the
- 1:08:58Speaker 15: best in each of them, you know, put with them
- 1:09:01Speaker 15: in the right seat on the bus, so to speak.
- 1:09:03Speaker 15: And that's why I keep bringing up Lessina and Modest
- 1:09:06Speaker 15: in their absence. Everybody's affected when two people at the
- 1:09:10Speaker 15: same spot, same position are missing. It doesn't just affect
- 1:09:14Speaker 15: that position, it affects what you're able to do on
- 1:09:16Speaker 15: an everyday basis. And so that's why I'm so anxious
- 1:09:20Speaker 15: to get both guys back with us full time because
- 1:09:23Speaker 15: you know, in Jordan, Kendall and Tremont's aspect of things,
- 1:09:27Speaker 15: they're trying to learn a new system, and they are
- 1:09:30Speaker 15: and you know you want to truly give them the
- 1:09:31Speaker 15: system as it will play out in real games. So
- 1:09:35Speaker 15: I think, you know, looking at those three, and then
- 1:09:38Speaker 15: I think when you add sim Wilcher, Dalen Swain and
- 1:09:42Speaker 15: Cam Heidi, you know, the three guys that have come
- 1:09:45Speaker 15: with us as transfers. You know that I think is
- 1:09:50Speaker 15: a big strength of our team, the experience, the depth
- 1:09:52Speaker 15: at the guard position, maybe even the versatility, and I
- 1:09:56Speaker 15: think as a coaching staff, we have to bring out
- 1:09:58Speaker 15: the best in those guys.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Yes, okay.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Next up asked about Kendall Weaver and of course he
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: was coming off injury and everything, and is he progressing
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: the way that Sean is hoping and expecting.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:16Speaker 15: I would say that of all of our players, and
- 1:10:18Speaker 15: I'll start.
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: In late May early June when.
- 1:10:21Speaker 15: Our team came together for the first time, Kendall may
- 1:10:24Speaker 15: be the most consistent, meaning not only his quality of
- 1:10:29Speaker 15: play every day, but his demeanor showing up being a
- 1:10:35Speaker 15: guy who's early to the gym, late to leave, and
- 1:10:39Speaker 15: super competitive in all that we do, defense, offense, drills,
- 1:10:44Speaker 15: player development. He wants to be good. He loves the game.
- 1:10:48Speaker 15: He really pours his heart and soul into what he does.
- 1:10:51Speaker 15: I don't know if any coach could ever say anything
- 1:10:54Speaker 15: other than he's a pleasure to coach. I think that
- 1:10:57Speaker 15: sometimes when I watch Kendall, you can't believe how athletic
- 1:11:04Speaker 15: and what he is able to accomplish at his size.
- 1:11:06Speaker 15: He's not a very big guy. You knows how much
- 1:11:09Speaker 15: he weighs, how tall he is. He plays much bigger
- 1:11:12Speaker 15: than the actual size. You know, he walks into the room,
- 1:11:16Speaker 15: you almost are taken back, like, wow, I thought you
- 1:11:19Speaker 15: were bigger, right, Because that's how he plays the game.
- 1:11:22Speaker 7: You know, he can play above the rim.
- 1:11:24Speaker 15: He's just really fast and quick, and he gives a
- 1:11:27Speaker 15: lot of himself to what his team does.
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: So he's been really consistent. We need him to be healthy.
- 1:11:34Speaker 15: I know you guys have seen him when he is
- 1:11:36Speaker 15: and isn't, and we're hoping for a healthy season. And
- 1:11:39Speaker 15: if that's the case, I would bet on him having
- 1:11:43Speaker 15: his career best year. I believe that he's set up
- 1:11:46Speaker 15: to do that. Not just three point shooting or scoring,
- 1:11:49Speaker 15: but you know, he can check the box in a
- 1:11:51Speaker 15: lot of different areas. He's a very versatile guard.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: Okay, there's some from Sean Miller will here's some more
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: from Seawan tomorrow as they get ready for or the
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: matchup with the Dude Floyd Devils. Up Next, we hear
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: from coach Sart from the Thursday media zoom here on
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: thirteen under the Zone. Well, long Oorns are at home
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: this weekend after forty two days between games. Texas a
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: play on Saturday morning eleven a m. Kickoff as the
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Longhorns will take on the Vanderbilt Commodorees on Saturday. So
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: let's hear from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian and we'll
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: start off with sarks opening statement.
- 1:12:31Speaker 16: Forty eight hours and we're back in DKR, which is
- 1:12:34Speaker 16: obviously very exciting for us. You know, it'll be forty
- 1:12:38Speaker 16: two days Saturday from our last home game. So the
- 1:12:41Speaker 16: idea that we get to run out of our own tunnel,
- 1:12:43Speaker 16: play in fun of our you know, our one hundred
- 1:12:45Speaker 16: thousand fans and feel their support, their energy, I think
- 1:12:49Speaker 16: is exciting. I think, you know, one point to be
- 1:12:52Speaker 16: made to the team, which is very critical, the connectivity
- 1:12:56Speaker 16: that bond our ability to stay connected over the lastlast month.
- 1:13:00Speaker 7: We need to bring that to d k R.
- 1:13:02Speaker 16: You know, we can't just rely on you know, external
- 1:13:06Speaker 16: factors to provide that energy. We got to make sure
- 1:13:08Speaker 16: we're providing our own energy and then feed off of
- 1:13:11Speaker 16: the energy from from the crowd and then in turn
- 1:13:14Speaker 16: give them the energy to keep their keep our crowd
- 1:13:17Speaker 16: alive in this game.
- 1:13:18Speaker 7: And so it's got to be a two way street
- 1:13:19Speaker 7: that way.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:13:20Speaker 7: We know, we're we know it's a heck of an
- 1:13:22Speaker 7: opponent we're playing.
- 1:13:23Speaker 16: It's gonna it's gonna take all three phases performing at
- 1:13:26Speaker 16: at a high level.
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: But I think we're you know, we're up for the challenge.
- 1:13:29Speaker 16: It's gonna be a heck of a game, and looking
- 1:13:31Speaker 16: forward to the opportunity, all right.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Next up, uh as our friend Kirk Bowles from the
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Houston Chronicle asking about the danger of risking playing man
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: and man coverage. Playing man coverage against Vanderbilt when you
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: have a guy who is mobile and versatil and throwing
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: the run or tucking in and run like Diego Pavia.
- 1:13:50Speaker 16: It's a challenge both ways because you know, I think
- 1:13:54Speaker 16: I think one thing is because of the multiplicity of
- 1:13:58Speaker 16: personnel groupings, informations and run schemes, you got to make
- 1:14:03Speaker 16: sure your your gap integrity is is sound in all
- 1:14:07Speaker 16: that they the looks that they can give you, and
- 1:14:10Speaker 16: and so there's times when sometimes zone coverages are a
- 1:14:13Speaker 16: little easier to adjust things out. Sometimes man is a
- 1:14:16Speaker 16: little easier to adjust out. But always in the on
- 1:14:19Speaker 16: the back burner is how are you going to account
- 1:14:21Speaker 16: for the quarterback and how are you going to count
- 1:14:23Speaker 16: for the quarterback in the designed quarterback runs? To make
- 1:14:27Speaker 16: sure you have enough hats to fit the design quarterback runs.
- 1:14:30Speaker 16: You always have to account for do you have enough
- 1:14:32Speaker 16: people to defend the triple option? Which which is a factor.
- 1:14:36Speaker 16: And then you have to make sure that if they
- 1:14:38Speaker 16: do throw the ball that you have the ability.
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: To defend the the the ad lib plays.
- 1:14:43Speaker 16: And when he starts to scramble and move out of
- 1:14:45Speaker 16: the pocket, and it's not always to run, you know,
- 1:14:48Speaker 16: one of his bigger plays last week was on a
- 1:14:50Speaker 16: broken play, throwing it back to the running back for
- 1:14:53Speaker 16: a critical first down. So, you know, really discipline, eye control,
- 1:14:57Speaker 16: really discipline in our zone drops, really discipline in man
- 1:15:01Speaker 16: of our rush lanes, our rush lanes, integrity of trying
- 1:15:04Speaker 16: to cage that pocket. I mean, all those things you're
- 1:15:07Speaker 16: gonna play a part, you know, as as it points
- 1:15:09Speaker 16: to it, you know. So I just don't think we
- 1:15:11Speaker 16: can be one dimensional. They're two well, coach, they got
- 1:15:13Speaker 16: too good of a scheme. We're gonna have to continue
- 1:15:15Speaker 16: to mix our looks and and and and try to
- 1:15:18Speaker 16: make things, you know, difficult on him and and try
- 1:15:20Speaker 16: to create some negative plays.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about Special Teams play and outside
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: of the Big Three, if you will, uh, the kicker
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: Mason Shipley, the punter and holder Jack Bomester Uh, and
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: of course the punt returner Ryan Niblet. He was asked
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: to evaluate how Special Teams has done overall as a whole.
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: A lot of guys are doing a nice job.
- 1:15:42Speaker 16: And there's some frontline players that are key components to that,
- 1:15:46Speaker 16: to that unit.
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:15:47Speaker 16: And there's some unsung heroes that we don't hear a
- 1:15:49Speaker 16: lot about, you know, I mean, Michael Taff before he
- 1:15:51Speaker 16: got injured. Was it was was this mainstay on Special Teams,
- 1:15:55Speaker 16: Jolan and McDonald, Another guy on Special Teams, Ty Anthony Smith.
- 1:15:59Speaker 16: Another guy on Special Teams which you see out there,
- 1:16:02Speaker 16: DeAndre Moore. So some of your frontline guys, but then
- 1:16:06Speaker 16: you talk about Marshall Landware, Jordan Johnson, Rebel Warren Roberson,
- 1:16:12Speaker 16: now Jonah Williams. So you're seeing some of those other
- 1:16:15Speaker 16: guys that maybe aren't frontline starters on offense or defense,
- 1:16:18Speaker 16: but are impactful players for us on special teams.
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: And you know, we take a lot of pride in
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: special teams.
- 1:16:23Speaker 16: We have since the day I arrived, and so the
- 1:16:26Speaker 16: last year going kind of the way that it went
- 1:16:28Speaker 16: was a little out.
- 1:16:29Speaker 7: Of character, I would say for us.
- 1:16:30Speaker 16: And so for us to get back playing to the
- 1:16:33Speaker 16: standard that we want to play two on special teams
- 1:16:36Speaker 16: I think is big for us because that's a huge
- 1:16:38Speaker 16: component of the game, especially in our conference, in games
- 1:16:41Speaker 16: like this, when you're talking one score games. When that
- 1:16:44Speaker 16: when that phase of the game can impact the game
- 1:16:47Speaker 16: from in a positive manner, it's surely beneficial.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Next, Sark was asked about third down defense and the
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: challenge of dealing with a slower, more deliberate tempo that
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Vanderbilt has when they come to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: Hey, Steve, they played put on well.
- 1:17:07Speaker 16: I think that's one of the keys to their success.
- 1:17:10Speaker 16: Right They're they're one of the top third down teams
- 1:17:12Speaker 16: in the country. I think they're over fifty percent maybe
- 1:17:15Speaker 16: fifty two percent on third down, which is which is
- 1:17:18Speaker 16: an excellent number. And part of that is doing part
- 1:17:21Speaker 16: you know, they they generally move the ball forward, you know,
- 1:17:24Speaker 16: they they run the ball, they get themselves in third
- 1:17:26Speaker 16: and short situations, they convert third downs, they stay on
- 1:17:29Speaker 16: the field, and then that allows them to be to
- 1:17:32Speaker 16: be inefficient offensive football team.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: And so the.
- 1:17:36Speaker 16: Idea is how well can you do on first and
- 1:17:38Speaker 16: second down to put yourselves in a winning situation on
- 1:17:42Speaker 16: third down and then when they do get to the
- 1:17:46Speaker 16: red area to doing a great job of playing red
- 1:17:48Speaker 16: zone lockout and keeping them out of the end zone.
- 1:17:51Speaker 16: On the flip side offensively is you know that it's
- 1:17:53Speaker 16: probably more pressure there to remain efficient on the offensive
- 1:17:57Speaker 16: side of the ball, just knowing how deliberate they can play,
- 1:18:00Speaker 16: and it's a it's a it's a nice style of play.
- 1:18:02Speaker 16: They do a good job of playing complimentary football, Vanderbilt does,
- 1:18:05Speaker 16: and so you know they your ability to remain e
- 1:18:08Speaker 16: fishing offensively, I think is is equally as important.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Next up, he was asked about the challenge of preparing
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: for two quarterbacks, meaning preparing his own two quarterbacks. If
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: Arch doesn't completely clear all the protocol.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: And all of that other kind of stuff.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Uh and and he has to go with Matthew Caldwell
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: and the adjustments that they might need to make.
- 1:18:32Speaker 16: You know, we haven't we haven't changed anything that we've done.
- 1:18:35Speaker 16: You know, our our system has been our system. I
- 1:18:37Speaker 16: know that as coaches and his teammates have the utmost
- 1:18:42Speaker 16: you know, confidence and respect for for Matt Caldwell. You know,
- 1:18:45Speaker 16: he's he performs really well. I know you guys have
- 1:18:47Speaker 16: a very small sample size of what you see in game,
- 1:18:51Speaker 16: but he gives us a ton of confidence in the
- 1:18:53Speaker 16: way that he practices every day, the way that he works.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:18:56Speaker 16: Naturally, He's been thrown into the fire here a couple
- 1:18:58Speaker 16: of different times in SEC play and has performed very well.
- 1:19:02Speaker 16: So the game plan is the game plan, and I
- 1:19:04Speaker 16: think that they, you know, all of his teammates have
- 1:19:06Speaker 16: a ton of confidence in Matt if it's his time
- 1:19:08Speaker 16: to go.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: Next up, I asked about ty Anthony Smith and what
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: he has done not only as a linebacker, and again
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: you'll hear that along word weekly tonight with Sark and
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: our guest linebacker's co defensive coordinator, Johnny Nansen, and he
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: speaks at length about ty Anthony Smith, but Sark was
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: asked about ty Anthony's role on special teams and the
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: growth he's had.
- 1:19:31Speaker 16: I think it's a byproduct of his commitment to it.
- 1:19:33Speaker 16: You know, he's he's gone for it. He was a freshman,
- 1:19:36Speaker 16: that was his way. He figured out early on that
- 1:19:39Speaker 16: was going to be his way to get on the field,
- 1:19:41Speaker 16: and he worked at it. He became one of Coach
- 1:19:43Speaker 16: Banks's kind of go to guys on special teams and
- 1:19:46Speaker 16: that actually earned him more playing time on defense as
- 1:19:49Speaker 16: a freshman. And then he's continually grown. You know, I
- 1:19:53Speaker 16: think one thing about ty Anthony is how much he's
- 1:19:55Speaker 16: matured from the day he arrived to where he is today.
- 1:19:59Speaker 16: I mean, he he's a leader on our team. He's
- 1:20:02Speaker 16: you know, football is important to him. He's a great teammate.
- 1:20:06Speaker 16: And at the end of that game last week, you
- 1:20:07Speaker 16: know he was in there playing those last four drives
- 1:20:09Speaker 16: on defense. And he's impactful. He's got a knack for
- 1:20:12Speaker 16: the football. He plays with fanatical effort, he's physical, he's fast,
- 1:20:16Speaker 16: and those are all great attributes obviously on special teams
- 1:20:19Speaker 16: as well.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: All Right, Next up, I was asked about the interior
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: defensive line depth. They had to play eighty three snaps
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: or eighty six snaps last week, eighty three the week
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: before in those two overtime games.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: And how important is having.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: That interior defensive line depth be able to spell one another.
- 1:20:37Speaker 16: I think the one thing that has gotten notoriety for
- 1:20:40Speaker 16: Vanderbilt's offensive line is that they played with a strong
- 1:20:43Speaker 16: and a weak side. You know, most size more typically
- 1:20:48Speaker 16: as you have a left tackle, a left guard, and
- 1:20:50Speaker 16: then a right guard and a right tackle, and they
- 1:20:53Speaker 16: they flip sides, you know, And that's a little bit
- 1:20:57Speaker 16: of an older model, but your very effective model worked
- 1:21:00Speaker 16: for a long long time and it works for them.
- 1:21:02Speaker 16: There's not much really to make of it outside of that.
- 1:21:05Speaker 16: That's what they do. I do think this is an
- 1:21:08Speaker 16: excellent run blocking unit. They use a variety of schemes.
- 1:21:12Speaker 16: They they pull well, they get to the second level well.
- 1:21:17Speaker 16: And so the task is really on our defensive front.
- 1:21:20Speaker 16: You know, if if this game wants to go the
- 1:21:22Speaker 16: way we wanted to go, you know, our defensive fronts
- 1:21:25Speaker 16: has got to play and we need to play well,
- 1:21:27Speaker 16: and we need to be we need to be dominant
- 1:21:29Speaker 16: on first and second down, and we need to do
- 1:21:31Speaker 16: a good job on third down of caging the quarterback.
- 1:21:34Speaker 16: And so I think our depth has played a part
- 1:21:36Speaker 16: over the past couple of weeks. You know, their ability
- 1:21:39Speaker 16: to stand tall and a goal line stand at Kentucky
- 1:21:43Speaker 16: on the ninetieth play of the game to get a stop,
- 1:21:46Speaker 16: their ability to sack a quarterback on the ninetieth play
- 1:21:50Speaker 16: of the game and overtime at Mississippi State. I think
- 1:21:53Speaker 16: speaks volumes to the depth that we have and the
- 1:21:56Speaker 16: trust that we have and a lot of those guys
- 1:21:57Speaker 16: to play at critical moments.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Okay, one thing that can be said about the team
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: you heard me mention a little while ago, the steep
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: hill they have to climb just to even have a
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: shot to reach the SEC Championship Game. And by the way,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: the math does add up if they defeat Vanderbilt, Georgia,
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: Arkansas and Texas A and M. Even if it came
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: the tiebreakers, Texas would be in the SEC Championship game
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: based on head to head wins important head to head
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: wins over those three ranked teams Vanderbilt, Georgia and Texas
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: A and M. They don't play Alabama, they don't play
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: Ole Miss. But it would the tiebreakers would set up
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: well for them. On that all that said, Sark was asked,
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: does he have to keep his guys focused on the
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: here and now or does he even bring up the
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: down the road possibilities.
- 1:22:54Speaker 16: The one thing about me with our team, I'm not
- 1:22:58Speaker 16: naive that they don't read and see and understand, and
- 1:23:01Speaker 16: so I want to make sure that they can understand
- 1:23:03Speaker 16: my perspective. So I had about a minute and a
- 1:23:06Speaker 16: half discussion about what your point is. We've got four
- 1:23:09Speaker 16: regular season games to go, and if we can handle
- 1:23:13Speaker 16: our business, we have as good as opportunity as anybody
- 1:23:16Speaker 16: to play in the SEC Championship game and be part
- 1:23:18Speaker 16: of the college football playoffs. But none of that is
- 1:23:21Speaker 16: going to happen if we don't handle business this week.
- 1:23:24Speaker 16: And so as long as that just went for you guys,
- 1:23:26Speaker 16: for me to explain what it is, that's about how
- 1:23:28Speaker 16: long I talked to the team, then our focus went
- 1:23:30Speaker 16: right back into this game. This is the most important
- 1:23:33Speaker 16: game of the year because without this game, those other
- 1:23:35Speaker 16: three games, you know, they lose, they lose the impact
- 1:23:38Speaker 16: of what they can matter down the road. So we've
- 1:23:40Speaker 16: got to pour all of our energy and our efforts
- 1:23:42Speaker 16: into this one.
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: For Saturday.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Next, asked about him at mostly the fifth he had
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: the two big touchdown catches and really coming on after
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: all the injury issues, and Sark was asked what has
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: impressed you most about what he's seen from himitt.
- 1:23:53Speaker 16: All the things I thought he would be he's growing
- 1:23:57Speaker 16: into and so I'm not really surprised. You know, he's
- 1:24:02Speaker 16: got elite hands, he's an excellent route runner, he's got
- 1:24:05Speaker 16: deceptively he's got deceptive speed, he's got length, he's a
- 1:24:10Speaker 16: physical blocker, he's smart, he's a good teammate, and so
- 1:24:15Speaker 16: all the things like I thought he would be in
- 1:24:16Speaker 16: our program now are starting to come to life. So
- 1:24:20Speaker 16: I don't want to say that I'm surprised by anything,
- 1:24:23Speaker 16: because I think what he's doing is exactly what we
- 1:24:25Speaker 16: thought he could be.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: All right. Next asked about his relationship.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: What kind of relationship, if any, does he have with Clarkley,
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: the Vanderbilt coach, and his thoughts on the job that
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: he's done.
- 1:24:35Speaker 16: A ton of respect for Clark obviously, you know, we
- 1:24:38Speaker 16: go to SEC meetings and things and we spend some time.
- 1:24:41Speaker 16: But a ton of respect for the job he's done.
- 1:24:43Speaker 16: That's not easy when when you're rebuilding the program, and
- 1:24:47Speaker 16: I think the belief that he had in his process
- 1:24:49Speaker 16: to get them there, he's held true to you know, obviously,
- 1:24:55Speaker 16: you know, it's not always about the vision that you have.
- 1:24:58Speaker 16: You have to put things into action, and Clark clearly,
- 1:25:01Speaker 16: clearly has done that. You know, he's brought in some
- 1:25:04Speaker 16: nice pieces to the puzzle from a recruiting standpoint. Obviously
- 1:25:07Speaker 16: Diego Pavia one of those. I mean in the impact
- 1:25:10Speaker 16: that he's had and maybe attracting other players, and a
- 1:25:13Speaker 16: sense of belief in that locker room, a ton of
- 1:25:16Speaker 16: credit and a ton of respect for Clark and the
- 1:25:19Speaker 16: job that he's done and continues to do at Vanderbilt.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: The last two weeks, long Wards have had to really
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: ramp up, rev up the two minute offense in come
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: from behind situation last week, down seventeen twice in the
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: fourth quarter to Mississippi State. The week before Kentucky trying
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: to get down the field like they did to get
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: the field goal that they thought would give him the
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: win in regulation, only to see Kentucky get it to overtime.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: But they end up winning anyway, and.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: Sarker's have to ask if there is a benefit to
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: having put his offense through that the past couple of weeks.
- 1:25:53Speaker 16: I think it's confidence building, you know, especially you know
- 1:25:57Speaker 16: one when you when you execute it at a high
- 1:25:59Speaker 16: level and you get things done, and that builds confidence
- 1:26:02Speaker 16: and belief in what you do.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Too.
- 1:26:04Speaker 16: There's valuable lessons learned when maybe you don't execute them
- 1:26:07Speaker 16: the way you would have liked to have executed it,
- 1:26:09Speaker 16: and so you've got to look at it from both
- 1:26:12Speaker 16: ends of the spectrum. We do try to practice a
- 1:26:16Speaker 16: lot of special situations and scenarios, you know, and that
- 1:26:20Speaker 16: has been something that I've learned in my time and
- 1:26:23Speaker 16: as an assistant coach and have tried to evolve more
- 1:26:25Speaker 16: into and I think it's really benefited us. And we
- 1:26:29Speaker 16: do a situational Master's meeting every Friday morning. We'll start
- 1:26:32Speaker 16: tomorrow morning with that meeting and go through different scenarios
- 1:26:36Speaker 16: of examples from around the NFL or college football or
- 1:26:40Speaker 16: whatever it might be, and then how we would play
- 1:26:43Speaker 16: that scenario. So we try to put them in as
- 1:26:45Speaker 16: many of those scenarios.
- 1:26:46Speaker 7: As we can.
- 1:26:46Speaker 16: You can't predict all of them, and they only show
- 1:26:49Speaker 16: up when they show up, you know. But as long
- 1:26:52Speaker 16: as we keep trying to raise the football IQ of
- 1:26:54Speaker 16: our players and executing in those critical moments you have
- 1:26:57Speaker 16: a better chance. There's so many one score games right
- 1:27:00Speaker 16: now that ultimately you know, your performance at those critical
- 1:27:04Speaker 16: moments I think is vitally important.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: And then finally, this roll is all the way back
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: to something that talked about during fall camp workouts in August.
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: At that time, I mentioned from being at the press
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: conferences and things of that nature and hearing Sark's responses,
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: was that I think I'd heard more questions about team
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: leadership than I'd ever heard about any football team ever before.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: And that was going in the season.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: And then you know, there's the established team leaders Sarch
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: Banning on offense and Michael Taff on defense. Two of
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: those guys, Anthony Hill on the defensive side for the
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: Logarns offensive linemen are there as well. Okay, so now
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: two of those guys got banged up. Two of those
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: guys are questionable for this week at least right now,
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: Manning and Taff. So Sark was asked, are there other
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: guys who have stepped up in the leadership category?
- 1:27:59Speaker 16: No, I think that's a great point, and I think
- 1:28:01Speaker 16: a lot of guys have grown over the past month,
- 1:28:04Speaker 16: and I know it's easy to point to now this week,
- 1:28:07Speaker 16: like the guys have been growing into this role.
- 1:28:09Speaker 7: You know, I've said I think d J.
- 1:28:11Speaker 16: Campbell has grown into the leader that I was hoping
- 1:28:13Speaker 16: he was going to be, you know, six seven months
- 1:28:15Speaker 16: ago and now you know where his leadership's at. DeAndre
- 1:28:19Speaker 16: Moore has grown into that role. I think Parker Livingstone
- 1:28:22Speaker 16: has grown into that role.
- 1:28:24Speaker 7: Obviously.
- 1:28:25Speaker 16: You know what Trey provided when he got back, I
- 1:28:28Speaker 16: think has helped us immensely.
- 1:28:29Speaker 7: Trevor Guseby on the.
- 1:28:31Speaker 16: Defensive side of the ball was probably a little easier,
- 1:28:33Speaker 16: you know, when you have Ethan Burke, Anthony Hill, Colin Simmons,
- 1:28:36Speaker 16: Manny Mohammad, those.
- 1:28:37Speaker 7: Guys were easy.
- 1:28:38Speaker 16: But to watch the progression of Jolen and McDonald, to
- 1:28:41Speaker 16: watch the progression of a you know, ty Anthony Smith,
- 1:28:46Speaker 16: which we touched on. You guys have heard me rave
- 1:28:48Speaker 16: about Leongelafal, but I've been talking about hero Canoe, Cole Brevard,
- 1:28:53Speaker 16: Alex January.
- 1:28:54Speaker 7: Is coming out of his shell.
- 1:28:55Speaker 16: And so you're I'm watching a team mature every single day.
- 1:29:00Speaker 16: And I know there's a focal point on this week
- 1:29:02Speaker 16: and that's understandable. But I've been watching a lot of
- 1:29:05Speaker 16: these guys grow up and mature over the last month,
- 1:29:08Speaker 16: and I think that's why their connectivity is better, because
- 1:29:12Speaker 16: guys are feeling a lot more confident and comfortable and
- 1:29:16Speaker 16: being vulnerable and being honest with one another, taking accountability
- 1:29:20Speaker 16: for maybe when they're not on point, and then having
- 1:29:23Speaker 16: the ability to step up and the lead in their
- 1:29:24Speaker 16: own right. So it's a good place to be that
- 1:29:27Speaker 16: way for us. If I didn't have these two guys
- 1:29:30Speaker 16: earlier in the year, I would not feel as comfortable,
- 1:29:32Speaker 16: But now going into this game, feel I feel a
- 1:29:36Speaker 16: lot more comfortable if I don't have those two, knowing
- 1:29:38Speaker 16: that we have the leadership on both sides.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: Of the ball, all right.
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: That's sort that's the final media availability he does with
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: the media overall.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: Of the week prior to the game.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: The next time he speaks, the conversation that I'll have
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: with him about about an hour forty five before a kickoff,
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: So that was they carry the one about nine fifteen
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: on Saturday morning there and we'll get the final update
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: from him on his guys, you're coming back from injury
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: and the feel of the team and going back to
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: an eleven am kick as well. Should be a great
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: day for football. It's only about a twenty percent chance
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: of rain. So good that went down. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: think you'll be okay. I think you'll be okay.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: What section are you Inhi? Going?
- 1:30:23Speaker 14: No?
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: I got to figure that out. I don't haven't had
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: the tickets on my phone yet. Oh okay, all right,
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: I'm leaving that to the other people, the other.
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: People that it's up to them that pull it off. Okay. Well,
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: I think he'll be in good shape regardless. Otherwise, all right,
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: we have more coming up. Some other football notes when
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: we continue on thirteen.
- 1:30:38Speaker 13: Out of the Zone.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: There's some George Harrison solo work there. What is Life There?
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: From believe seventy five something like that from mid seventies.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: There some of his great solo work post Beatles.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: Announcement king down from the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: The twenty twenty six class that will be honored on
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: April eighteenth, conducted on April eighteenth, has this class some
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: things that were really noteworthy about it. For example, Clinton Dempsey,
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: outstanding American soccer players from Nacadoch's Chad Hedrick, Olympic speed skater,
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: Charmagne James World champion rodeo writer, also Lewis Santop who
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: was a great Negro League Hall of Famer going in
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: the Texas Western Miners basketball team nineteen six, the entire
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: team that won the National Championship now known as UTEP,
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: back then it was Texas Western, the first college basketball
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: team to start an All African American starting five. For
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: that they are being inducted the Class of twenty twenty six.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: And then these from the world of football, Von Miller
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: from Texas A and M and great career in the NFL,
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: current commander YEP, Gary Patterson, former TCU head coach, Zach Martin,
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: the former Cowboy, and Steve McMichael, the great Longhorn defensive
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: lineman who just passed away recently from als. But what
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: a great career that Steve McMichael had, as he'll be
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: posthumously inducted. He played fifteen years of course, former All
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: American of the Longhorns, and then played fifteen years with
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: the Chicago Bears. Was part of the Chicago Bears nineteen
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: eighty five Super Bowl championship team. He was inducted into
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: the Class of twenty twenty four, also a member of
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in two
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: thousand and nine. A four year letterman at Texas from
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: seventy six to seventy nine, a member of the nineteen
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: seventy seven Southwest Conference championship team, twice selected All Southwest
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: Conference in seventy eight seventy nine, and graduated as the
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: school's all time leader and career tackles with three hundred
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: and sixty nine and thirty sacks. Also a finalist for
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: the Lombardi and Outline Awards in nineteen seventy nine. He
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: claimed Team and Hulable MVP honors that season after totaling
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: one hundred and thirty three tackles during his time at Texas.
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: He also posted forty tackles for lost, ninety nine quarterback
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: pressures and eleven force fumbles as the Long Orange went
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: thirty four to twelve and one during his time. He
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: becomes the fifth former Longhorn. He became the fifth former
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: Longhorn to be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: Fame Earl Campbell, Bobby Dylan, Tom Landry, Bobby Lane. In
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: addition to five Texas football greats in the Football Hall
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: of Fame. Texas Tech Shram, the former Cowboys and Pro
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: football executive for forty four years, was also inducted in
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: the Hall in ninety one, and McMichael was an integral
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: part of that Bears famous forty six defense that led
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: him to the championship of Super Bowl twenty. So good
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: to hear that news about the late Steve McMichael as
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: the class of twenty twenty six for the Texas Sports
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: Hall of Fame was announced. So that's good to hear that.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: The college football coaching search, We've talked about this and
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: the whole thing, all the politics that are involved at LSU.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: How seemingly all of these schools, at least all the
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: SEC schools and perhaps Penn State as well that are
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: involved in this, are playing the waiting game. With Lane
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: Kiffin to said to gauge his interest in all of this.
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: Florida State could come open, Auburn could come open as well.
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: He would be high probably on those wish lists as
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: well if it were to come to that. Also, it's
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: been mentioned that Mike Elcho might fit into what Penn
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: State would want, given his roots and how he spent
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: the first fifteen years of his coaching career in the Northeast,
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: mid Atlantic, in the Midwest. He is talking about breaking
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: down the barriers with Jexas, A and M. He said,
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: we have high goals and expectations for this team in
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: this program.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: We know in order to meet them, we have to
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: do things that haven't been done.
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: So on your list, yeah, Wisconsin might open.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's that's another possibility. So anyway, that supposedly
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: a quote unquote industry source whatever that is college football
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: media said quote Elco should take that Penn State job?
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: Why?
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: Yeah, why is that a better job?
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: People are asking and the one thing that Penn State
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: has of our Texas A and M is history.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: But that's about it. Texas A and M. In terms
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: of resources.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: You know, the stadium is almost the same size, you know,
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: Beaver Stadium, Happy Valley might be a few thousand seats
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: to me, one O nine as opposed to like one
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: O four, one five at A and M. But the facilities,
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: the program, the visibility of the conference in the SEC
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: and Penn State's visibility in the conference in the Big
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: Ten pretty much offset one another. So what it would
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: appeal to him more being a Midwestern guy and or
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: the guy's opposted down there, but he's done quite well.
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: He was a defensive coordinator of Texas A and M,
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: and then of course he went to Duke, did a
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: good job as head coach there, and Al's come back
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: and here they are number three in the country and
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: unbeaten and would seem to be a lot to be
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: in the College Football Playoff barring a complete collapse the
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: rest of the way. So I think they're probably in
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: good shape for that. So it'll be interesting to follow
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: that over the course of the next few to the
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: text line where somebody said Trey you Savage was facing
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: Rice in the spring of twenty twenty four, now throwing
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: gyms in the College World Series.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: That's true.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: And somebody said long Horns, baby, God blessed Dicky V.
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: Talk about the dig Vitou classes. Yeah, that the Longhorns
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: will be playing in next week. And somebody said, look
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: for Brian Hartline to get a lesser power for job
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: like Wisconsin. Possible, certainly possible. He would seem to be
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: in line to be up for a head coaching job
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: being the offensive coordinator there and maybe in the Big Ten.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: Wisconsin might be that type of job. There for him.
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: Our man Seapal said, TCU and Sunny Dyke's were told
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: that Michigan was known for stealing signs when they played.
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: The story was told, you're probably right, Seapowe. The final
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: score of the game was sixty five to seven. I
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: think Michigan could have given their playbook to TCU and.
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: Not Michigan.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: Georgia could have given the playbook to TCU and they
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: would have beaten him that bad. TCU beat Michigan in
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: spite of what might have happened in that Fiesta ble,
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: so that's why you didn't hear any squawking about it.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: But then in the next game they lost sixty five
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: to seven in the National Championship to Georgia, and like
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: I said, Georgia could have given him their playbook. Probably
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: Blane still when and won the football game off of that.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: But I agree with you the whispers were going around
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: for a while about Michigan and sign stealing.
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: Kind of like how the Nationals knew the Astros were
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: sign stealing in twenty nineteen and they were tipped off
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: on that from other teams. I think it's a similar
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: sort of thing where TCU was aware of it and
- 1:39:21Speaker 4: took the precautions.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely all right. We'll be back to wrap up
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: today's edition. The program on thirteen under the zone
