- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: Tristan, how sad are you today, my friend?
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: I've been happier, Steven.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: I've had better weekends, I must say.
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: It was not the spook tacular that we expected.
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: It was spooky in all the wrong ways.
- 0:57SPEAKER_05: I was reminded that we're Texas Tech football fans.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: And that was very spooky.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, we have games like West Virginia, or like in I guess West Virginia last year, Oklahoma State, the past couple years, where it's like, hey, maybe we won't be bad.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: And then we're bad the next week, and usually the rest of the season.
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: Well, to give the treasured listeners on how we're feeling, Steven and I are day drinking as we're plotting this.
- 1:24SPEAKER_05: So what are you what are you sipping on, Steven?
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: The uh shiner cheer because 'tis the season.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: It is officially it is November, what's today?
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: November 2nd.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: So that's officially Christmas season.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: So officially legal.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: It's legal to be in the Christmas spirit and drinking a shiner holiday cheer, which is one of the best beers that Shiner makes, to be 100% honest.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: But what are you drinking?
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm drinking a local uh one out of Austin called Live Oak.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: It's a the Oktoberfest.
- 1:55SPEAKER_05: It's my last Oktoberfest in the fridge because I'm trying to leave that month behind me with how it went on the football field.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: So just no more October vibes.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: Now we're doing November vibes, and I I hope that it's this is the month where maybe it gets better.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: Well, the good news is this is the month the basketball starts.
- 2:13SPEAKER_06: That is true.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: November 25th is when college basketball starts.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech managed to um keep that game with Houston this year in the non-conference.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: So that's good.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: I think they're gonna play somewhere in uh Fort Worth.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: Um, but that's good.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: You know, uh it was disappointing when they canceled those games in Orlando uh last week, and uh glad we reconciled that game.
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: What a fun matchup! I mean that's I love I love the cross-state rivalry.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: You know, it's it's there's nothing more fun than busting in a season playing a fellow Texas team, and especially one as good as the Kooks.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: The Kooks are supposed to have a good squad, so I'm excited to see us test it early.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: Well, and the thing is, I mean, Texas Tech and Houston and Baylor are probably the top three Texas teams in the past, you know, four seasons overall.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: Texas has been down, AM stinks, and uh it's nice.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: It's it'll be a good it'll be a good matchup with the Kooks for sure.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: But Tristan, why don't we just bite the bullet?
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: Why don't we talk about the Oklahoma Texas Tech game on Saturday?
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: You want to start us off, my friend?
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'll get it going.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna be honest with the treasure listeners.
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: I I wasn't paying too close of attention after the first quarter.
- 3:27SPEAKER_05: I kind of gave up on the game as soon as our players did.
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: So um I was at a I was at a Halloween party with my family uh full of longhorns, so it wasn't the most fun experience of my life after they just upset Oklahoma State on the same channel the game before.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: So I've personally never seen us lose a game so fast because it we lost in the first quarter, and there's no other way to say it because we did.
- 3:54SPEAKER_05: We gave up after the first 15 minutes of the game.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: We gave up probably a little before that, yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, man.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: The the turnovers at the beginning, I mean, it was like it was like five big mistakes in a row that we made just to completely give them the football game, and that's disappointing.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, our receivers can't catch the ball and just oh, pop it up in the air.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: Here you go, Oklahoma.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Have it at the 20-yard line.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: You just have to, you know, two plays and you score again.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Um, and then penalties all around the place.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: We had seven first quarter penalties, and I I think I I lost count at about a million uh for the rest of the game.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: That's gotta be a record.
- 4:35SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, it was so bad.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: Uh Ethan Card.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm sorry.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: I you know, I always hate when people call out specific players, but this man is awful uh on the offensive line, number 77.
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think he's younger, so you know, give him a little a little bit of uh leeway there, but man, this man gets a guaranteed two, three false starts a game.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: He can't block me.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's tough out there.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: Uh, and it stinks because we have we have a lot of good players on that offensive line, but you know, one guy messes up and and you you really see it.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: So uh Zach McPherson, uh, my boy who uh who I I just decided to go back and forth with, I guess, for the whole season on whether I hate him or love him.
- 5:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, that big face mask penalty at the very beginning, uh, when we could have kept it kept OU to three points instead of seven, and uh, you know, they go on to score that touchdown, and that's all on him.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: But uh, yeah, the turnovers and penalties, and and you know, just just an awful game all around for our Red Raiders.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: It it stuck because we came out of the gates amazingly.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: You know, we we had we score on the first drive and then we stop him.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: And yeah, it's like okay, we got a game, let's do this.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: But nope.
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: It's kind of like the our receivers this game.
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: Nope, gonna throw it to the other team.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: Perfect pass to the other guys.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: Here you go.
- 5:58SPEAKER_04: Can't have that.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: We're gonna hit it right off my chest, and here you go, OU.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: Right it right in your lap, man.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: Holly, and uh OU just poured it on us.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: A site we're pretty used to, but you we're usually we can usually keep the game close uh in Lubbock against OU.
- 6:13SPEAKER_05: And unfortunately, our team just couldn't find that today, and they had like no fight in them after the first quarter because it got even worse in the second quarter.
- 6:20SPEAKER_05: So it uh just a very scary night in general, and that makes nine in a row to the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 6:29SPEAKER_05: We're used to streaks against us at this point.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: I was really hoping that this would be a year where we can maybe snap that, but clearly this team is just not there yet.
- 6:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, this rebuilding phase of Texas Tech football is really carrying on, and it's it's you can definitely see it in games like that.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and uh, you know, we got to give OU their credit because they are a really good football team.
- 6:51SPEAKER_04: Uh they're uh on the up.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, they're they've really played well the last three weeks.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, and they've you know, they're three and oh over the last three weeks.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: So uh their run game, they got some guys back.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: Um, their running back that they got back, I can't his name uh escapes me right now, but he had about three touchdowns by himself.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, and of course, this was his first game of the year back from suspension.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: He had to go come back at the tech game.
- 7:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and just tough, tough all around, like I said, for the Red Raiders.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: We did have a lot of injuries this game, which sucked.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, Vasher again out.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Um, they're undisclosed, so you got to think it's COVID, uh, unfortunately, for the guy.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: Hopefully he gets okay.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: But Xavier White missed, Dalton Rigdon missed again.
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: Krishan Merriweather was another big one that we missed on the on our linebacking core.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: And then before the game, Jalen Hutchings, our uh our interior line defensive lineman, uh hurts himself in the pregame, doesn't play.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: So uh and he's a big part of our rush defense, our rush attack, and and they ran all over us.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: They had six rushing touchdowns this game, man.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: And so uh we need to get healthy.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: Uh plain and simple.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: We and and our receivers, you saw the youth of them, even though Kashawn Carter, one of our um, you know, older uh receivers, messed up uh that time.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: But we saw with Miles Price, we saw with uh Loick Fungi, we saw with Trey Cleveland that we just have a young receiving core that makes mistakes, and so uh they played great against West Virginia, but you they showed their their true freshman status this game, and it's and you know you're gonna see that a lot, and that's tough.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, it was definitely the poorest receiving game I've seen us play this season.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, definitely that's the worst part whenever you're going up against an offensive power like OU.
- 8:38SPEAKER_05: You need to keep scoring, and obviously, you need to put up big plays, and you have to have receivers to do so.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Um, and they put up big plays, all right, just not in our direction.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: So huge against us this game, no way around it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: And this is one of those games where I can't say that if maybe if the Jones was packs, it would have been different, but it it clearly was just over from the start after the second drive.
- 9:02SPEAKER_05: So I because I mean, like in the O in the UT game, maybe if it was a Pac Jones, we could have really rallied to win.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, we should have won anyway, and but I just you cannot feel that way this game.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: And uh I I don't blame the fans for dumping out at uh after the half because they they put up 48 on us in the first half.
- 9:21SPEAKER_05: That's the first half.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: That should be an in-game score of a bad defensive showing in general.
- 9:26SPEAKER_05: So that's definitely one of the worst showing of our defense this season for a unit that's been serviceable.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: So it's just all around a pretty disappointing, pretty, very disappointing showing from the team.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: I mean, there are some broad spot bright spots.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: I hope people aren't giving Columbia too much crap because I mean, all in all, he had a pretty solid game.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: He was fine.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: He, I mean, he threw it shows two interceptions, but neither of which were his fault.
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: And you know, the fumble was his fault.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, you you give him that, but uh for how for how poorly uh his surrounding players played, it it's tough to blame Columbia for this one.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't blame him even a little bit for this game.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: Um lots of picks as we move forward into the into TCU, but uh it's this is something we're very used to.
- 10:16SPEAKER_05: Uh OU is still obviously at the top of the conference, and we're still uh trying to get out of the basement.
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: So a lot of progress needs to be made.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: I I hope this well staff has it in a bounce back from a blowout like this, because we're gonna need to, if you know, we we're gonna need to do something against CCU, or else this could uh kind of slip and slide out of hand again, because especially after something so big as to uh as the West Virginia win, you know, that was with the team needed that desperately, and then we come into this game.
- 10:43SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't think anyone was expecting us to win, but to have your your sales just burned, you know, to not even even have a shot at this game, it's just immortalizing for the team for the staff and for the fans.
- 10:53SPEAKER_05: And Wells, Wells really bought back some faith with the West Virginia game.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: I think some people were kind of coming back, but this I mean, uh our fans are obviously really impatient with this man right now.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: And I did my best in uh my my soda endure induced tweeting.
- 11:08SPEAKER_05: I uh I was doing my best to uh defend Wells because you know off the field he's been doing some solid things like with recruiting and such, but uh and it's only year two.
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: But uh you can't blame people for being mad about being bad for this long, and you know, it this we this was a conference opponent, and you're supposed to be competing with your conference opponents, and that just didn't show this game.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I just think I I kind of have a message for the for the fan base.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: We need to stop being so reactionary, we are uh so uh instantly uh pissed off, or we're on top of the moon, like there's no in-between here.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: There needs to be something to where we realize that Matt Wells is in his is one and a half years into this job.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: He has a team that he got from the absolute bottom.
- 11:58SPEAKER_04: I mean, this team stinks.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: We were so far in the gutter, and we just don't we just don't change after a season.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: It takes time, it takes multiple years to get new head coaches, recruits in, get their system acquainted.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: I I just don't think we should give up on Matt Wells yet.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: It just doesn't make sense.
- 12:16SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm with you.
- 12:17SPEAKER_05: I I agree fully.
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of people are probably gonna jump to maybe comparing him to Chris Kleiman.
- 12:21SPEAKER_05: But Chris Kleiman did inherit a better team, you know.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: Bill Snyder was is is tenfold the coach Cliff Kingsbury was, and he, you know, Cliff, we all love Cliff, but the program that he left was clearly not a winner.
- 12:35SPEAKER_05: You know, he had a losing record in every way, and that it it shows it.
- 12:39SPEAKER_05: Matt Wells is bad for for probably one of the first times in his career.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, he didn't really have to build the program at Utah State.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but for the first time in his career, he has to build a team, which is a little concerning because you know he's never had to build a team before.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Well, well, he did kind of have to build it.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, he his first season with Utah State, he won three games, and then the last season he won 10 games.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: So he kind of turned that program around a little bit.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: Uh, and I think that's a lot of the reason why Kirby saw him and and wanted to hire him.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: And we'll get into Hoke Cut here in a second, but go ahead.
- 13:12SPEAKER_05: That's uh that's absolutely true.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh apparently, and I was reading I was reading some articles about this by his time about at Utah State was uh the coach before him was the one that really turned Utah State into a competitor in the Mountain West.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: Matt Wells kind of took it to the next level, which again is is is a bit of a rebuilding, you know.
- 13:28SPEAKER_05: That is building it up, you know.
- 13:30SPEAKER_05: But um I I think this is just he's inherited a much more difficult job this time.
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: So you do got to give him some time.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: And uh you're in a you're in one of the top conferences in the entire country, and uh a football craze won.
- 13:44SPEAKER_05: So it's you're you're going up against some staunch competition, and Texas Check Tech just hasn't been there in a long time because we all know that under Kingsbury we were finishing in the basement nearly every year.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: So you give the program some help, you know, give some some support.
- 14:01SPEAKER_05: I understand wanting to win.
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: We all do, you know, it's been a really, really long time since we've builded a team that we're excited for, but I'm with you, man.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: I I I I I wish it's just part of being a fan.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: Fans, fans, there's they're either 100% or zero percent, and that's just how fandom goes.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Well, and that's I mean, sports fans are emotional.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: I get it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: I sat in my room for like two straight hours in total darkness after we blew the game against UT.
- 14:29SPEAKER_04: So I I get it, but seriously and honestly, did you did you really like expect us to beat Oklahoma, the team that is the powerhouse of the Big 12 since its formation?
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I was just don't get me wrong, I was disappointed with how tech played on Saturday.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: I thought we were gonna be uh at least closer, but I'm also not gonna be the guy who's calling for anybody's job right now because we got blown out by OU.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, I'm not calling for Wells, I'm not calling for Yost, and I'm especially not calling for Kirby Hokutt's job.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: The people that are calling for Kirby Hokutt's resignation can really just shut the hell up because you don't know what you're talking about.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Man, he has brought two programs that are the best they've ever been right now.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: Basketball and baseball, the best they've ever been.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Not that tech baseball was bad in the past, but they were mediocre a lot through the 70s and 80s and that kind of stuff.
- 15:28SPEAKER_05: And don't forget, uh, bringing the first men's team's uh uh national championship to Lubbock and the in the men's track team.
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: He fostered that as well.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't know how you can call for this dude's resignation when he's he's brought two of the best, they're top five head coaches, in my opinion, in both their respective sports.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: So, you know, uh football has been weak.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: He needs to do better with football.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: Um, but I'm not ready to give up on on this hire yet.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, I will, I I think it's firm to say that Cliff was a bad hire, but you know, uh this is I'm not giving up on Wells yet.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: I I I cannot believe whole cut haters.
- 16:06SPEAKER_05: I that just that blows my mind how they have how they think that because football isn't why it's not cut out for the job.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, it'd be pretty crazy.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: I I get it's the show, I get it's West Texas, I get that it's the one-star state where football is supreme, no matter how you ever want to cut it, um, in terms of uh support in the state and fandom in the state.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: But man, this this guy has done incredible things for the for the school.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: We we just got to watch our basketball team play in a national championship, and I don't think anyone would have ever dreamed in their lifetime of watching Texas Tech play for a national championship in basketball.
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: And I I we're just this is far surpassing anything Texas Tech has ever done in basketball and baseball, not to mention we're in the college world series every other year.
- 16:54SPEAKER_05: If we don't go, it's a disappointment.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: If we're not in Omaha, that's a disappointing season.
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: If we're not winning the Big 12, it's a disappointing season.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: I mean, y'all, if football isn't the only thing that matters, and I really don't like whenever fans act like it is.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: It really takes away uh how special those other teams are because you know you there's way more to an athletic department out of college than just football.
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: I understand it's the show, but yeah, it's it's a thing that just because one is down and while everything else is doing phenomenally is just mind-boggling.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: I just think they're just really reactive and want football to be good that bad.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's just a recency thing.
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: And you know, I get it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: I there was a moment where I was really pissed, and then you just you have to come to realize that it's just not it's not all about football.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: And uh we have a lot of good sports ahead of us, and during basketball season, we're gonna be bragging a lot because we're gonna be really good in baseball season, we're gonna be really good.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: So think ahead to the to the good times, and still, even this season's not blown yet.
- 17:52SPEAKER_04: You know, our last we have four games left, and three of them are against TCU, Baylor, and Kansas.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: So those are three very winnable games for this Texas Tech team.
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: So if we finish five and five, I'm happy.
- 18:03SPEAKER_05: I don't know about you, but I'm happy.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: Oh, I'm off the walls if we finish five and five.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: If it I think that would be a phenomenal play place for this play uh team to land.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: And going into the season, I thought five and five would be awesome.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: You know, I was I said six and four was probably the ceiling, but um I five and five would be awesome heading into next season.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so we got we gotta we have time to pull pull together a few wins and uh you know beat the private schools and beat Kansas and do what we're supposed to do.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: Uh Oklahoma we've we've been spooky with Os, dude.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: I mean don't use don't use spooky anymore.
- 18:36SPEAKER_06: We use that far too many times.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: You're right, you're right.
- 18:39SPEAKER_06: It's not October anymore.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: All right, we we we we've been we've been pulling around with Oklahoma State, so it's we're on a streak with them.
- 18:46SPEAKER_05: And I I I would love nothing more than to be uh a ranked Oklahoma State team in Stillwater, so that that would be awesome.
- 18:54SPEAKER_05: But I mean, I'm not we have a long way to go until that game.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we got two big rivalry games coming up, and uh really excited to watch how our team responds to this.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: And because these are two very totally winnable games, yeah.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: And let's kind of get into this next game.
- 19:08SPEAKER_04: Let's go TCU, you know, 230 Fox Sports 1, it's in Fort Worth.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: TCU 2 and 3.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, they are 0-3 at home, they have not won a game at home, and we are going to their house.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: So hopefully let's make it 0-4.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, that's not really a surprise that they're 0-3 at home.
- 19:26SPEAKER_04: They have one of the worst fan bases in the Big 12, they just stink.
- 19:31SPEAKER_05: TCU dude, yes, and uh this some people kind of make the joke that we're going to like uh Texas Tech satellite campus, you know, because our Red Raiders definitely show out.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: I'm sure we're not the only fans in this conference that show out to uh to Fort Worth, but um because they get upset whenever uh other fan bases aren't filling their stadium because they they don't you know they just have their their whole 10,000 students, you know, from California or whatever.
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: If any horn frogs are listening to this, we we just poke and jab, but not really.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: There's there's uh there's some good ones out there, like at every school, but honestly, over overall, they're one of the worst.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, one of the smallest and one of the worst.
- 20:09SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's just I mean the Gary Patterson single-handedly carried them to the Big 12.
- 20:14SPEAKER_05: So it's a uh outside of that, that there's what else do they offer?
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: But um uh because we already have Baylor, you know, it's they're purple Baylor, and they're a smaller school with smaller fans than than Baylor, even.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: So I don't think there's a conversation for another time, they're so dislikable.
- 20:31SPEAKER_05: That's all I'll say.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, well, we've done really well in Fort Worth, too.
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: Every time we go to Fort Worth, there's a real fight and chance.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: We get out, we get out of there a lot with W's.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: For some reason, TCU is actually school that uh even during Cliff's era, we did pretty good against.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I I feel good about this one.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: Um, that the spread is minus 10.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: I don't know how fair of a spread that is.
- 20:54SPEAKER_05: I think it's probably really Vegas is like overreacting to the OU game, um, and TCU's Baylor game.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: So I I I'm not I don't think I really trust that one.
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: Um, because I think I'm gonna go in this thinking that there's a really good shot that we win.
- 21:08SPEAKER_05: What about you, man?
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: What do you what do you think about it?
- 21:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think so.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: Uh in that TCU Baylor game, TCU had a 30 to nothing lead on Baylor, and the game ended up 33-23.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: So uh they kind of gave in.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: Whether that was just kind of giving in on the game saying we got the victory or whatever, but uh, I don't think TCU is very good.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: I their offense is not very good.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: Um Max Duggan, their quarterback, he loves to run.
- 21:33SPEAKER_04: Um, he's you know, he he's a good scrambler, and and if he doesn't see you know his first option right away, he'll probably he'll probably take off.
- 21:40SPEAKER_04: So uh that's something we have to look out for.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: But uh TCU as a whole, their defense is their strong suit.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: Um as a good yeah, and they limited all their opponents to under 40 points.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: And you say that, and it's like, oh, whatever, under 40 points.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: But they played the best teams in this conference already.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: They played Iowa State, Oklahoma, Texas, um, Kansas State.
- 21:59SPEAKER_04: They played.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: All these teams already, and they've limited all of them to under 40 points, something we couldn't do.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: So their defense is solid.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, we haven't really had to go to 40 points uh much.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: Uh the I think the last time we got to over 40 points was in the UT game, and that was uh uh overtime as well.
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: So um I I don't think we need to get to 40 points to win this game.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, we we haven't had to get to 40 points to uh to beat West Virginia.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: So uh obviously I think you're gonna have to put up like 30.
- 22:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what I meant by that was that they've limited really good teams to under 40 points.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: Okay, so you know, like like you know, limiting Spencer Rattler and Sam Ellinger and and Iowa State and Kansas State, that that's probably the four best teams, plus Oklahoma State.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: That's you know, that's the top five right there.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: So um in in a really traditionally strong offensive conference, so uh, you know, you got to watch out for that for sure, absolutely.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: And uh I think uh I think it's probably gonna be a bit of a low-scoring game in general, then.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: And because I mean we haven't really shown that we're uh the the typical offensive juggernaut we usually are, and I think it may have a little bit to do with the system.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: I don't know if it's necessarily the talent level, but uh we it's gonna be it's gonna be tough to get past another good defense.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: We did pretty well against West Virginia.
- 23:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, we came out with the win, but whenever we went up against Iowa State and Kansas State, we were stopped in our tracks.
- 23:23SPEAKER_05: So I'm a little it makes me that makes me a little nervous, but it's I I don't know if this is the best in the conference, um, if we've already gotten like defense-wise or if we've already gotten past that, but uh obviously it's gonna come down to uh probably probably to the defenses, so yeah, yeah.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: Tech's tech's defense has to be just serviceable like they've had to be all season.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: I I do, you know, we still scored 28 points against Oklahoma.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: Um, and then you know, we scored our 34 against West Virginia.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: But uh Matt Wells, like we've been saying, he doesn't want to run this this air raid system where we where we score a lot of points.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: So uh I think what tech needs to do in this game to win is just limit the turnovers because our team is young and it uh we've saw with Oklahoma that you know making these kind of mistakes will get in their head.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: Uh so we limit the turnovers and we just play well like we did against West Virginia, we'll be fine.
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: Um we don't need to get down on ourselves.
- 24:22SPEAKER_04: We so got down on ourselves in the first five minutes against Oklahoma.
- 24:26SPEAKER_04: It was so sad.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: Um, and then I think we need to keep TCU to under 30.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: Um, every game this season, they've every game they've won this season, they've scored over 30.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: So we keep them under 30.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think we have a pretty good chance.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: So uh just a lot of defense right now, right here.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: We need for this game for it for it against an offense that's not particularly good.
- 24:47SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: And uh I just hope that we are better than Baylor because I think the probably that's probably the best measuring stick right now is is the Baylor game because we're I feel like we're probably in the same sort of conference zone as Baylor, unfortunately.
- 25:00SPEAKER_05: Um, but I mean until this Baylor game, TCU hasn't been extraordinary.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: You know, it did take a lot of luck to beat UT.
- 25:07SPEAKER_05: It was that lucky fumble at the end that they got.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: Um so I I don't I don't know if if they're as good as the spread wants to think it is.
- 25:17SPEAKER_05: So I I I'm with you.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: I think I think it's probably gonna come down to uh who can get over 30 points, probably.
- 25:24SPEAKER_05: So uh I I think we have a good chance, you know, there's not gonna be a home at home home crowd atmosphere.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: And but I tell you what though, Gary Gary Patterson hates tech.
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: So I'm sure he I'm sure he definitely wants to uh pull out the stocks to get us because man, that guy never has anything good to say about us.
- 25:44SPEAKER_04: No, he doesn't.
- 25:44SPEAKER_04: He hates tech.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: He he fakes that we throw batteries at him or frozen water bottles for wherever we got those.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you think they're gonna stay frozen all through the tailgate, Gary?
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: You're wrong.
- 25:55SPEAKER_05: Where do you think we're getting those for the uh and the batteries?
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm gonna walk around with my Game Boy, my jukebox, Gary, here in 2020.
- 26:04SPEAKER_06: My my D batteries that I just keep on hand just to throw in your stupid face.
- 26:09SPEAKER_06: I I just replaced my smoke detector, Gary.
- 26:12SPEAKER_06: Get ready for this.
- 26:15SPEAKER_06: Seriously, it's tortillas, Gary.
- 26:17SPEAKER_04: It's tortillas.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: We throw we throw tortillas, that's our thing.
- 26:20SPEAKER_04: We don't throw batteries, you liars.
- 26:23SPEAKER_04: But uh, I would put TCU in the Baylor and Tech Tier 2.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: I think I I don't think TCU is all that good.
- 26:29SPEAKER_04: Um, they did beat, they pulled out it, you know, a win against Texas, but we almost did too.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: So um, I don't know.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: I we'll we'll see how it plays out on Saturday.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you know, three out of the four final games of the season, I think we have a real shot at winning.
- 26:45SPEAKER_05: I and I I really feel good about starting uh Columbia against TCU too.
- 26:49SPEAKER_05: I feel like he's the kind of quarterback that would really thrive against a solid defense like TCU because you know, we're not really looking for the huge plays, we're just looking to methodically move up the field.
- 26:57SPEAKER_05: So, and I think that's think that's the key to uh to move past a defense like that.
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: Just wear him out and grind and grind and score.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: No doubt, no doubt.
- 27:05SPEAKER_04: But I think that's it for uh for TCU Tech.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: We'll see how it plays out on Saturday.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: Tristan, what's your song of the week?
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: All right, so uh for my song of the week, I decided to mix it up a bit.
- 27:17SPEAKER_05: And I'm actually, since we're going to Fort Worth, I thought maybe I'd support a uh a Fort Worth musician.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: So I am going with a young lady, uh, and it's it's get this, it's not country music.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: It's uh yeah, yeah.
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, you can definitely hear the Texas in her vibe, but it's it's definitely more of kind of like a throwback 80s sort of uh uh what do they call it?
- 27:42SPEAKER_05: That neon like retrow wave sort of music.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: It's pretty fun though.
- 27:46SPEAKER_05: I really like this one song from her.
- 27:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, shout out to Tom Mooney uh on the on the uh blue light uh blue light podcast, uh new slang.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: Love that podcast.
- 27:54SPEAKER_05: Y'all should go live it, give it a listen.
- 27:55SPEAKER_05: It's all about Texas musicians and beyond.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: Um, and he's uh he's a proud red raider.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: This is Jesse England's Fever Dream, and it's just a vibe, man.
- 28:06SPEAKER_05: And it's I love the guitar in that song, it's just uh uh intoxicating.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: I really dig this the vibe of this song.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: Y'all should go give it a listen and support uh a local Texas girl.
- 28:34SPEAKER_04: So you so you're not going with Monster Mash?
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's fine.
- 28:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh guys, I I hope y'all discovered Monster Mash and really fell in love with it like I did.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: I know that that's a song near and dear to my heart.
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: The words speak to me, and I I unfortunately uh the mash could not graveyard smash in the Jones last Saturday.
- 28:54SPEAKER_05: Um, but what are you gonna go with, man?
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: I'm going with the late great Bill Withers uh Use Me.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: Great song.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: Um, soulful, passionate.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: You know, it's about getting it's it's really kind of a funny song.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: It's about getting used by a girl and just being content with it, you know.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Just like he's talking to his his brother in the in the lyrics, and he's like, dude, you're totally getting used by this girl.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: She's just playing you, and he's like, That's fine, dude.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: You see how good looking she is?
- 29:23SPEAKER_05: I was about to say, she yeah, and so hot scale must be imbalance, then.
- 29:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: There's not a real lesson in this song, but it's just a fun listen.
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: It's a it's jazzy, it's soulful.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: Um, and there's a guy also that uh on on I discovered on YouTube, he does a cover of this song called Teddy Swims, and he looks like if if any of you know what action Bronson looks like, he looks just like him.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: He's got tattoos all over the place, big old beard, kind of a fat guy.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: Um, but great, great song to listen to and like a piano bar vibe to it.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: Um, but my song of the week is is the Bill Withers version, Bill Withers Use Me.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Just keep on using me until you use me up.
- 30:13SPEAKER_05: Excellent.
- 30:14SPEAKER_05: That's that man's a that man's a legend, and so whoever hasn't heard of this guy yet, they're gonna be opened up to a whole new door.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, absolutely, for sure.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: So uh I'm gonna I have a couple shouts out to end the pod here.
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: Uh shouts out to the mcrib.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: The mc rib is coming back December 2nd.
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: Heck, baby.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: It's it's back December 2nd.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: We have like a month to go.
- 30:37SPEAKER_04: It is November 2nd right now, one month until the mc rib's back.
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's just shout outs to the McRib.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: It should be an American holiday every time the McRib comes back.
- 30:45SPEAKER_05: We should have our day, we should have a day off for the McGrib.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: Except for, of course, McDonald's.
- 30:49SPEAKER_05: Sorry, y'all.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not McDonald's.
- 30:51SPEAKER_04: You gotta make us serve the McRib.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: We had uh we had a McDonald's right in our backyard in Lubbock uh at our house, and we we abused the McRib when it came back.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: Well, football season usually meant mcrib.
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: I guess the McRib has decided to hibernate for a while.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: I don't think there's like a like ground all day.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't think there's like a set day that the mcrib comes back.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: I think McDonald's just decides to just do it whenever.
- 31:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 31:20SPEAKER_05: So uh I I wish I wish they released like right now because during these election times in this nation, we need the McRib, a true American hero to unite us.
- 31:29SPEAKER_05: Vote for the McRib.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, I've already ballots already cast it to the McRib.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, wrote in McRib.
- 31:36SPEAKER_04: Speaking of that, that was my second shout out.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: It is November 2nd.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: Tomorrow is November 3rd.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: It is election day in this country.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, tense times, I would say, for a lot of people.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Uh but uh what I would stress to everybody is to be civil through this whole process.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: Uh we all, you know, you can you can vote however you want, it does not matter to us.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: It shouldn't matter to really anybody.
- 32:02SPEAKER_04: You know, you use your vote how you want to because you're an American citizen and you're allowed to do whatever you want with it.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: But don't don't be uh awful to other people if your candidate doesn't win.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: Don't be just the worst.
- 32:16SPEAKER_04: And and you know, people take this stuff seriously and they should.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: It it's you know, it's a serious thing for this country and and for the future, but uh just don't be just don't be awful to one another, guys.
- 32:27SPEAKER_05: We we're ourselves with some dignity, yeah.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: We need some more togetherness, especially during these times.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: And uh whether you vote for Biden or Trump or Kanye, I don't care.
- 32:36SPEAKER_04: Just you know, be civil or the mcrib, just be civil towards one another, and that's that's what I would leave on.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: I a good good one to leave on, Steven.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: I always get so sad whenever people are like ready to uh talk mess to my old friends or uh yeah, um, like it's a team or something like that.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: And that's not what it should be.
- 32:55SPEAKER_05: Um, it's this is this is our nation, this is our lives.
- 32:58SPEAKER_05: So make sure y'all just love and respect each other and uh treat each other with dignity.
- 33:01SPEAKER_05: I mean, Stephen and I are gonna sit here and soapbox a grandstand because y'all are smart enough to make your own decisions.
- 33:05SPEAKER_05: Just we're just saying, you know, make sure y'all y'all act like we're all at a tech game and we're all uh happy or sad together.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: So mostly mostly sad.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: Mostly sad if we're talking tech football.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: In the jones, if we're in the Jones, yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: So just uh act act like the good uh Lubbock folks we are and uh love and respect each other.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: But uh God bless America.
- 33:25SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 33:26SPEAKER_04: So uh you can follow both of us on Twitter.

- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Uh wow.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just want to congratulate Steven and Tristan on another great podcast.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: They were everything we thought they would be.

- 34:13SPEAKER_02: You know, we fed off of it.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Uh great job.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
