• 0:35
  Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
• 0:38
Speaker 4: This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk, and I have
• 0:40
Speaker 4: both of my co-hosts in the building today, Hollis Lewis
• 0:44
Speaker 4: and the football queen, Lisa Odie.
• 0:47
  Speaker 5: Hello.
• 0:47
  Speaker 6: Hello.
• 0:47
Speaker 4: All right, we've got quite a bit of different things,
• 0:51
Speaker 4: I guess, going on today.
• 0:53
Speaker 3: And, Hollis, you're going to open this up. Let us go.
• 0:58
Speaker 3: Let's get going. Okay, so the first thing we're going
• 1:00
Speaker 3: to talk about is the Protect College Sports Act. 2026
• 1:04
Speaker 3: is a bill introduced by Senator Ted Cruz out of
• 1:07
Speaker 3: Texas and Senator Cantwell out of Washington, also co-sponsored by
• 1:12
Speaker 3: Senator Shelley Moore Capito. All right. It is a lot
• 1:16
Speaker 3: to cover. But in essence, what this is, is a
• 1:18
Speaker 3: framework to essentially protect intercollegiate athletics. It addresses NIL laws.
• 1:26
Speaker 3: athlete compensation, transfer rules, eligibility disputes, health care protection, conference realignment,
• 1:36
Speaker 3: and also the financial stability of Olympic and women's sports.
• 1:42
Speaker 3: So just to get into just some highlights of it,
• 1:44
Speaker 3: basically it was set. Let's start with the transfer. So
• 1:49
Speaker 3: you would be allotted one transfer. Anything more than one
• 1:52
Speaker 3: transfer you would have to sit out. As far as NIL,
• 1:55
Speaker 3: it would create a framework as far as like established.
• 1:59
Speaker 3: And let me before I get into the nuts and bolts,
• 2:01
Speaker 3: essentially what it does, it would this will usurp all
• 2:05
Speaker 3: the different state and conference and policy. So it would
• 2:09
Speaker 3: create one NIL rule. So it wouldn't be from state
• 2:12
Speaker 3: to state anymore like how it is now. It's different
• 2:15
Speaker 3: from state to state. So this would create one rule,
• 2:18
Speaker 3: one policy. one authority in which you would look at,
• 2:21
Speaker 3: which would obviously be a federal law. So again, the transfer,
• 2:24
Speaker 3: I've already articulate that. So basically it would create a
• 2:27
Speaker 3: compensation packages where I think it would essentially, and they
• 2:33
Speaker 3: don't necessarily say this, but it would have a salary
• 2:35
Speaker 3: cap of about $ 22. 5 million. And that could extend to
• 2:36
Speaker 3: another $ 27. 5 million in if you do certain things as
• 2:44
Speaker 3: it relates to Olympic and women's sports. So you can get,
• 2:46
Speaker 3: I guess, an incentive if you do certain things. It
• 2:49
Speaker 3: would create a program in which, you know, your athletic
• 2:53
Speaker 3: and education, you couldn't be cut for illnesses or poor
• 2:58
Speaker 3: athletic performance or like roster management, players would have healthcare
• 3:03
Speaker 3: through the university. It would create like I would say
• 3:07
Speaker 3: like collaborations as far as compensations, like TV deals, like
• 3:11
Speaker 3: those schools could like come together and conferences could come
• 3:14
Speaker 3: together to make one big like media package deal. And
• 3:18
Speaker 3: it would also give some rights to local media. So
• 3:20
Speaker 3: that way you don't like essentially what would happen if
• 3:23
Speaker 3: like Notre Dame or Marshall was a part of a
• 3:26
Speaker 3: big media package. We would still get the games here
• 3:29
Speaker 3: so we wouldn't have to like, you know, pay for.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: you know, games and different things of that nature. It
• 3:34
Speaker 3: would create some things as far as Title IX, and
• 3:38
Speaker 3: that would cover, like, women's sports, Olympic sports, making sure
• 3:41
Speaker 3: those programs are still viable. It would create rules and
• 3:45
Speaker 3: regulations around, like, agency, those agents representing players in NIL deals.
• 3:52
Speaker 3: One thing that it also do that I like, some
• 3:54
Speaker 3: additional things, is that it would create basically where coaches–
• 4:00
Speaker 3: and staff members couldn't leave mid-season or were limited.
• 4:05
Speaker 5: That's part of it.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, so it would create some like anti... Basically, the
• 4:09
Speaker 3: way I read it, Like anti-tampering, because that's kind of
• 4:13
Speaker 3: what goes on now. Like if you're talking to a
• 4:15
Speaker 3: coach before the season end, you leave before the bowl
• 4:17
Speaker 3: game or the playoff, that's.
• 4:17
  Speaker 5: Tampering, essentially.
• 4:19
Speaker 3: So it would limit that. And like I said, it
• 4:23
Speaker 3: would kind of do all those things. Now, some of
• 4:25
Speaker 3: the criticisms around it, and again, we got guys like
• 4:28
Speaker 3: Deion Sanders, Nick Saban, and a lot of the high-profile
• 4:32
Speaker 3: former coaches. at the college level supporting this office. Now,
• 4:37
Speaker 3: some things that it doesn't do, it doesn't necessarily give
• 4:40
Speaker 3: players or at least outline a pathway for players to
• 4:44
Speaker 3: like unionize, to collect the bargain. Some of the it
• 4:49
Speaker 3: would also create like boards and committees and players wouldn't
• 4:53
Speaker 3: necessarily have, you know, a voice on that. committee that
• 4:58
  Speaker 3: represents them.
• 4:59
Speaker 5: They wouldn't get worker rights. Denial of worker rights.
• 5:02
Speaker 3: Sort of. No, that's a good point. I'm glad you
• 5:05
Speaker 3: brought that up because it's still kind of iffy on this.
• 5:09
Speaker 3: If they're employees, are they employees or not? And I
• 5:12
Speaker 3: think the work around for them on that is that
• 5:15
Speaker 3: you're still getting a scholarship. So I think when people
• 5:17
Speaker 3: talk about why are they getting a scholarship and getting paid,
• 5:20
Speaker 3: I think the scholarship gets around you being an employee.
• 5:24
Speaker 3: So Although you do get health care and different things
• 5:27
Speaker 3: of that nature. So, I mean, and there's some stuff
• 5:31
Speaker 3: regarding like, you know, HBCUs and some of the smaller
• 5:34
Speaker 3: colleges don't get necessarily that voice at the table. And
• 5:37
Speaker 3: I'm not sure they're included in that revenue sharing model. So, again,
• 5:46
Speaker 3: you know, is it a good thing? Is it a
• 5:48
  Speaker 3: bad thing?
• 5:48
  Speaker 7: I mean, I don't know.
• 5:50
Speaker 4: I think it's... For everything that I heard, it actually
• 5:55
Speaker 4: fixes everything that I think.
• 5:59
Speaker 3: Needs to be fixed with the exception of the HBCU.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: I don't think that I hate to even go here, but.
• 6:08
Speaker 4: I hate the reality of HBCUs being left out of
• 6:14
  Speaker 4: college football.
• 6:16
  Speaker 3: I don't know if they're necessarily left out. I don't
• 6:19
Speaker 3: want to say that. Well, because I think it's HBCUs
• 6:24
Speaker 3: and the smaller colleges don't necessarily. You're not getting a
• 6:28
Speaker 3: piece of that pie. And I don't mean to cut
• 6:32
Speaker 3: you off, but I think what I'm trying to say
• 6:34
Speaker 3: is that I'm not sure how much money is going
• 6:37
Speaker 3: to trickle down to a Marshall, a State, a James Madison.
• 6:41
Speaker 8: Which is one of our problems with all of this.
• 6:44
Speaker 8: We've always said that. And it doesn't really address that problem.
• 6:47
  Speaker 3: So I don't know.
• 6:49
Speaker 4: I mean, I think I mean, some of the things
• 6:51
Speaker 4: I think makes makes sense. And and it's and it's
• 6:59
Speaker 4: I like I like I like rules that say, boom,
• 7:03
Speaker 4: and you can or you can't do this.
• 7:05
Speaker 3: And that's it. You know, and you don't have people
• 7:08
Speaker 3: being able to work around it.
• 7:09
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 7:12
  Speaker 6: I don't know.
• 7:13
  Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
• 7:13
  Speaker 6: Go ahead.
• 7:14
Speaker 3: I just want to ask you as somebody who's been
• 7:16
Speaker 3: part of an athletic union. At some point, the athletes
• 7:25
Speaker 3: are going to unionize.
• 7:27
Speaker 4: Whether you have this or not, you cannot create a
• 7:30
Speaker 4: rule in which you're not going to allow.
• 7:31
  Speaker 6: Again.
• 7:31
Speaker 3: Okay. And I think that's why they're keeping the scholarship thing.
• 7:35
  Speaker 6: Go ahead.
• 7:35
Speaker 8: But if they're saying that they're not formal employees status
• 7:40
Speaker 8: and they don't have collective bargaining, then they can't really
• 7:42
Speaker 8: organize in a union.
• 7:43
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 7:43
Speaker 3: See, that's my thing. That makes it illegal. But I
• 7:45
Speaker 3: think they would try. You don't think at some point.
• 7:47
Speaker 5: I mean, but but at this point, they couldn't.
• 7:49
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 7:49
Speaker 5: According to the way the bill is written now, the language.
• 7:52
Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you this. Do you do you
• 7:55
Speaker 3: foresee a situation in which, OK, let's let's assume this
• 7:57
Speaker 3: is already passed, like one of the Senate committees. I
• 8:00
Speaker 3: forget the exact committee. I'll find it here in a second.
• 8:02
Speaker 3: So this is past the committee process. Is it going
• 8:05
Speaker 3: to go to the Senate? If it passes, go to
• 8:07
Speaker 3: the House and and, you know, the. Eventually can get
• 8:09
Speaker 3: to the president to be vetoed or not. Do you
• 8:12
Speaker 3: ever foresee a situation in which athletes, if this passes
• 8:17
Speaker 3: and they say, well, look, we don't like this. We
• 8:19
  Speaker 3: don't like this. This ain't fair. This ain't fair. We're
• 8:22
Speaker 3: going to have a work quote unquote work stoppage. Do
• 8:25
Speaker 3: you think that could.
• 8:26
Speaker 5: Happen at the collegiate level?
• 8:28
Speaker 8: I think it would be difficult without a union. I mean,
• 8:30
Speaker 8: I think it would be difficult to get everyone on board.
• 8:34
Speaker 8: The college, the collegiate football world is so large. And so,
• 8:38
Speaker 8: you know, there's so many different levels to it. It
• 8:40
Speaker 8: would be hard to get everybody without someone, an outside
• 8:44
Speaker 8: organization coming in to help them organize that. I think
• 8:48
Speaker 8: it would be a really difficult thing for them to do.
• 8:50
Speaker 3: But do you think it could be like maybe it's
• 8:53
Speaker 3: not the totality of the collegiate? Let's just say football, basketball.
• 8:56
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 8:57
Speaker 3: Do you think it's Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Ohio?
• 9:01
Speaker 5: You mean just in particular schools?
• 9:02
  Speaker 6: The big dogs.
• 9:02
Speaker 3: And we're just saying, look, because again, information can spread.
• 9:05
Speaker 8: But why should they? I mean, why would they want
• 9:07
Speaker 8: to do that? I mean, why would they want to
• 9:09
Speaker 8: walk out? I mean, they're getting, those schools are probably
• 9:11
Speaker 8: getting the most NIL money and the best deals of
• 9:14
Speaker 8: any schools in the country, you know, maybe at some point.
• 9:18
Speaker 8: But at this point, it sounds like it's illegal, according
• 9:21
  Speaker 8: to this act.
• 9:23
Speaker 3: I mean, you can't make them play.
• 9:25
Speaker 8: Well, yes, but I'm saying they're not getting granted employee
• 9:29
Speaker 8: status with this act.
• 9:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think part of the issue, I think,
• 9:38
Speaker 4: and what hinders the schools or the players is the
• 9:45
Speaker 4: fact that they're not, quote, workers.
• 9:51
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 9:52
Speaker 3: You know, they're not quite workers.
• 9:54
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 9:55
Speaker 4: But I think the scapegoat in that is we are
• 10:00
Speaker 4: representing the school i think that that piece of it
• 10:07
Speaker 4: could ultimately because just imagine if all the major colleges
• 10:15
Speaker 4: said okay all the players said look Unless you do
• 10:20
Speaker 4: this for us, we're not playing. If they shut down,
• 10:26
Speaker 4: if they sit down and create a mess to what
• 10:32
Speaker 4: we all know of college football, the opening of college
• 10:37
Speaker 4: football weekends, And the players are not playing from top
• 10:42
  Speaker 4: to bottom.
• 10:42
Speaker 3: I guess my thing is like as far as like
• 10:44
Speaker 3: looking at the transfer rule that's outlined in this particular
• 10:47
Speaker 3: policy and bill, they're saying you only get one. So
• 10:50
Speaker 3: players decide. And again, I don't know if it will
• 10:54
Speaker 3: work as well as if football has it within basketball.
• 10:57
Speaker 3: Because I think in basketball, you have an alternative. So
• 11:01
Speaker 3: in basketball, I can go to China. I can go
• 11:04
Speaker 3: to Europe. I can go to Africa. I can go
• 11:06
Speaker 3: to Canada. I can go to South America.
• 11:08
  Speaker 6: Good point.
• 11:08
Speaker 3: And I can play and make money.
• 11:10
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 11:10
Speaker 3: So I'm saying if the basketball, if those basketball schools,
• 11:13
Speaker 3: the top schools, and we're just saying, we're saying 64 schools.
• 11:16
Speaker 3: We say they play the season. March Madness comes and
• 11:19
Speaker 3: they say, look, we're not playing in the March Madness
• 11:22
Speaker 3: tournament unless ABCD. Whether it's the transfer or whether it's
• 11:28
Speaker 3: we don't want the cap on the, well, we want
• 11:30
Speaker 3: a bigger cap on the finances.
• 11:32
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 11:33
Speaker 3: Or, and again, again, I'm not trying to offend you,
• 11:37
Speaker 3: but you can feel free to go off on me, Lisa.
• 11:40
Speaker 3: Or you can say to basketball, football, and women's basketball, say, hey,
• 11:43
Speaker 3: we don't want to carry those other sports. We don't
• 11:45
Speaker 3: want to carry the Olympic sports. We don't want to
• 11:47
Speaker 3: carry the other women's sports. That shouldn't be our obligation when...
• 11:51
Speaker 3: If we're all subject to this same salary cap, why
• 11:55
Speaker 3: should we all be subject to this?
• 11:56
Speaker 5: Well, and you're right.
• 11:59
  Speaker 6: I like that.
• 11:59
Speaker 3: I like that. I like your point, too. But I was.
• 12:03
Speaker 8: Just going to say, like, that would be the only
• 12:05
Speaker 8: way that they could address those things, because there's definitely
• 12:08
Speaker 8: some antitrust relief in this act as well.
• 12:10
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 12:11
Speaker 8: Because legally they they, you know, can enforce their rules
• 12:15
Speaker 8: on transfer caps, recruiting, all that without constant lawsuits. So
• 12:20
Speaker 8: the players don't have that to go to fall back on. Like,
• 12:23
Speaker 8: let's say what you're saying. We don't like, you know,
• 12:26
Speaker 8: we're going to get a lawyer and we're going to
• 12:27
Speaker 8: sue the NCAA because we don't like the fact that
• 12:30
Speaker 8: our money is being shared with women's sports as, you know,
• 12:32
Speaker 8: kind of putting it the way you put it. They
• 12:35
Speaker 8: can't do that. So the only option would be to
• 12:37
Speaker 8: walk out. And I just don't see them being able
• 12:40
Speaker 8: to get maybe school by school, but not a full
• 12:44
Speaker 8: fledged college football walkout.
• 12:47
Speaker 5: I don't know how they could do that. Well, and
• 12:48
Speaker 5: let's assume— Without an organization.
• 12:50
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 12:51
Speaker 4: And let's assume, Hollis, you're considering walking out. And let's
• 12:57
Speaker 4: say you're making a good amount of money, but you're
• 13:00
Speaker 4: going to try to do this for the good of
• 13:02
Speaker 4: the sport. Are you going to be able to walk
• 13:05
Speaker 4: away from that money? I think some people— I mean, we've
• 13:08
Speaker 4: seen this before. So we've seen athletes leave money on
• 13:10
Speaker 4: the table— Not college.
• 13:12
Speaker 3: Not college athletes. But they never had to. They've never
• 13:16
Speaker 3: been in this position. So I think we would see
• 13:18
Speaker 3: some brave kid. I'm just saying it's possible. Let me
• 13:20
Speaker 3: just say it like that.
• 13:21
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 13:21
Speaker 3: I'll give you that. And I guess what I'm just
• 13:23
Speaker 3: saying is that when you talk about not having equitable
• 13:26
Speaker 3: representation as far as in those boardrooms, in those, you know,
• 13:33
Speaker 3: for the setting of policies, and I'm limited to all
• 13:36
Speaker 3: this stuff I can do. And, again, even when you
• 13:38
Speaker 3: talk about the compensation piece, The retention pool and revenue
• 13:42
Speaker 3: sharing structure may operate as federally sanctioned ceiling on athletes' compensation.
• 13:48
  Speaker 3: So that's a ceiling. And that compensation is, I wouldn't
• 13:54
Speaker 3: say equitable, but they're going to do comparisons analysis to
• 13:57
Speaker 3: how much the coaches are getting paid, to how much
• 13:59
Speaker 3: administrators are getting paid, and different things of that nature.
• 14:01
  Speaker 3: So I don't see there's going to be a day,
• 14:04
Speaker 3: there's not going to be a day where you have
• 14:05
  Speaker 3: a $ 10, $ 15, $ 20 million kid anymore. Can I throw
• 14:08
Speaker 3: in a wrinkle here?
• 14:09
  Speaker 5: Please.
• 14:10
  Speaker 6: Title IX.
• 14:11
Speaker 9: I think they're going to have to look at this
• 14:14
Speaker 9: one sport at a time because of Title IX. The
• 14:16
Speaker 9: description of Title IX says that sex discrimination in any
• 14:21
Speaker 9: education program or activity that receives federal financial assistance, it
• 14:25
Speaker 9: ensures that no person is excluded from participation, denied benefits,
• 14:31
Speaker 9: or subjected to discrimination based on sex in education settings.
• 14:35
Speaker 6: So if they're looking at basketball.
• 14:38
Speaker 9: They're going to have to look at men and women together.
• 14:39
Speaker 9: They're going to have to look at baseball. How can
• 14:43
Speaker 9: you separate it based on title and not?
• 14:45
Speaker 3: And that's my point. If I'm the star quarterback of Ohio,
• 14:50
Speaker 3: and let's say I'm limited. I'm just making up a number.
• 14:53
  Speaker 3: I'm limited to $ 2 million a year. That's my max
• 14:56
Speaker 3: that I can get. And I got the golfer making
• 14:59
  Speaker 3: $ 2 million a year, too, or $ 1. 5 or $ 1 million,
• 15:03
Speaker 3: or the tennis player or the field hockey player. star
• 15:09
  Speaker 3: player I got a problem with that I got a
• 15:12
Speaker 3: problem with that when I'm generating when I'm generating all
• 15:15
Speaker 3: the revenue But, you know, if.
• 15:17
Speaker 8: You want to keep all the money, then you go
• 15:21
Speaker 8: directly to the NFL.
• 15:22
Speaker 5: But you don't have a pathway.
• 15:25
Speaker 7: You've got to spend three years.
• 15:26
Speaker 8: That's part of the college experience, I think. I mean,
• 15:29
Speaker 8: you know, it's not professional. And so you are going
• 15:31
Speaker 8: to do some revenue sharing with others because you're part
• 15:34
Speaker 8: of a school. It's not just you and that sport.
• 15:37
  Speaker 8: You're a part of, if you're going to Alabama, you're
• 15:39
Speaker 8: a part of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
• 15:40
Speaker 5: That's a part of that school, all those sports, all
• 15:42
  Speaker 5: those students involved.
• 15:44
Speaker 8: It's not a professional organization, although it looks a lot
• 15:46
Speaker 8: like one. You know, that's just part of being in college,
• 15:51
  Speaker 8: in my opinion.
• 15:52
Speaker 3: But I think the problem with that is that if
• 15:54
Speaker 3: I play on the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, I
• 15:57
Speaker 3: pay for all the other sports. You see what I'm saying?
• 16:01
Speaker 5: But it's always been that way. It's always been that way,
• 16:04
  Speaker 5: hasn't it?
• 16:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right. But I'm saying equity. It has to
• 16:06
Speaker 3: be an equitable division of that money. And I see
• 16:10
Speaker 3: exactly where you're at. I'm saying you shouldn't get a piece, but.
• 16:14
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 16:14
  Speaker 3: So, okay.
• 16:15
Speaker 4: So, I'm not 100% with you, but I see exactly
• 16:21
  Speaker 4: what you're saying.
• 16:22
Speaker 3: And I see what Lisa's saying.
• 16:23
  Speaker 6: You're right, too.
• 16:24
Speaker 3: I'm not saying it, but... But I don't know if
• 16:27
Speaker 3: there's really a true answer to this.
• 16:30
Speaker 4: Okay, so I'm playing– I'm getting a million dollars, and
• 16:36
Speaker 4: I'm playing on the men's basketball team. Lisa, you're playing
• 16:41
Speaker 4: on the women's basketball team. You are the star there.
• 16:44
Speaker 4: I'm the star over here.
• 16:46
Speaker 8: I'm a bigger star, by the way, if you're going
• 16:48
Speaker 8: to tell this make-believe story.
• 16:49
  Speaker 5: But go ahead.
• 16:50
Speaker 4: So– I'm going to get $ 500. And you're going to
• 16:58
Speaker 4: get $ 100. And everybody below you is going to get
• 17:03
  Speaker 4: less than that.
• 17:03
  Speaker 6: Sure.
• 17:05
Speaker 4: I don't know if that's going to be able to fly. Again,
• 17:09
Speaker 4: but how does it not fly? Because that's what it
• 17:12
  Speaker 4: is now.
• 17:13
Speaker 3: And I'll say the same thing for a Tennessee or
• 17:15
Speaker 3: Connecticut women's basketball team. Connecticut Husky women's basketball team is
• 17:20
Speaker 3: the biggest thing on that campus. And if you're a
• 17:22
Speaker 3: woman's basketball player, y'all bringing in all the money.
• 17:25
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 17:26
Speaker 3: Y'all generating the revenue for that athletic program. So y'all
• 17:29
Speaker 3: need to get the biggest part. So I'm not just
• 17:31
Speaker 3: saying men's. I'm saying who's the biggest on the campus.
• 17:33
Speaker 3: But OK. Are you saying the biggest.
• 17:35
Speaker 8: Doesn't Title IX address that?
• 17:36
Speaker 5: I mean, pretty much.
• 17:37
Speaker 3: But everybody got to get equal.
• 17:38
Speaker 5: The revenue sharing as well.
• 17:40
  Speaker 6: Well, that's what I.
• 17:41
Speaker 5: I mean, that's the way I would read it.
• 17:43
Speaker 9: I think the point I'm making is that it. It's
• 17:46
Speaker 9: probably going to wind up going to litigation because.
• 17:48
Speaker 5: I'm wondering if they can't, if this passes.
• 17:51
Speaker 6: Well, that's the thing.
• 17:52
Speaker 3: You've got two different laws that are going against each other.
• 17:58
Speaker 9: So, I mean, that's going to end up having to
• 18:00
Speaker 9: go into the courts and get sorted out.
• 18:02
Speaker 8: And that leads me to this point while we're on
• 18:04
Speaker 8: all this legal jargon. Is this federal overreach? Is this
• 18:08
Speaker 8: to me? This was a question that popped up to me.
• 18:10
Speaker 8: You guys tell me what you think. I mean, are
• 18:13
Speaker 8: we getting the government into something that we probably should?
• 18:16
Speaker 5: Do we want them in college sports?
• 18:18
Speaker 3: I'm going to say no. I'm going to say no.
• 18:20
Speaker 3: But I don't think you're going to get any kind
• 18:22
Speaker 3: of change with the NCAA.
• 18:23
  Speaker 5: I think.
• 18:26
Speaker 3: Again, what I say is federal overreach. I would say
• 18:30
Speaker 3: I don't like necessarily how this bill is drafted in totality.
• 18:34
Speaker 3: I think it's some things that need to change. And
• 18:36
Speaker 3: I think the rules of collegiate sports and I think
• 18:39
Speaker 3: Title IX. And again, I may be in the minority
• 18:41
Speaker 3: and I know I'm going to lose some people, but
• 18:43
Speaker 3: I think Title IX needs to change. I think it
• 18:46
Speaker 3: has to be an equitable division and not an equal division.
• 18:49
Speaker 3: So with that being said, I don't think the federal
• 18:53
Speaker 3: government had a choice because at this point, not only
• 18:56
Speaker 3: does this bill do all the things that I outlined,
• 18:59
Speaker 3: it also protects conference realignment. It also protects rivalry games.
• 19:06
Speaker 3: So if we want to keep the sanctity of collegiate sports,
• 19:09
Speaker 3: we have to do something because obviously the schools aren't
• 19:12
Speaker 3: going to do it. The conferences aren't going to do it.
• 19:15
Speaker 3: The presidents of these universities aren't going to do it.
• 19:17
Speaker 3: The ADs aren't going to do it. And the NCAA
• 19:19
Speaker 3: is not doing it. So somebody has to do something.
• 19:21
Speaker 9: Well, the important fact here, too, is at the end
• 19:23
Speaker 9: of the day, these are– federally funded institutions there you
• 19:27
Speaker 9: go unless it's a private school that's true yeah the
• 19:30
Speaker 9: schools are good but that so there's the question are
• 19:32
Speaker 9: the the sports teams that are private are they still
• 19:36
Speaker 9: really considered part of the school or is it really
• 19:39
Speaker 9: kind of its own entity.
• 19:40
Speaker 3: I believe it should be its own entity that's another
• 19:43
  Speaker 3: problem if you.
• 19:44
Speaker 8: I think if you go there then you might associate
• 19:46
Speaker 8: with schools period don't even put the name on their
• 19:49
Speaker 8: on their jersey i I'm not going to.
• 19:52
Speaker 3: Let you represent Alabama and you you're not being connected.
• 19:56
Speaker 5: No, no, no, no.
• 19:57
Speaker 3: What I'm saying is that you are representing Alabama. I
• 20:01
Speaker 3: don't think you should have to go to be mandatory
• 20:04
Speaker 3: that you go to class. I think you should be
• 20:07
Speaker 3: able to, like, if I want to just come there,
• 20:09
  Speaker 3: play football, get paid. I don't have a scholarship. I
• 20:12
Speaker 3: should be able to go get paid and play football
• 20:14
Speaker 3: or play basketball, play hockey or whatever.
• 20:16
Speaker 6: I want to do.
• 20:16
Speaker 5: And that's not really collegiate football. That's college. College football. College.
• 20:21
Speaker 3: You go to college. So you would rather see it
• 20:25
Speaker 3: by age. By age and school. And option.
• 20:28
  Speaker 6: And that option.
• 20:28
Speaker 3: If you want to go to school, go to class.
• 20:30
Speaker 3: Because like we just said, like we said on this
• 20:33
Speaker 3: show for the last three years. We said, this is
• 20:37
Speaker 3: something that you brought to my attention. We ain't heard
• 20:41
Speaker 3: of a star, of a backup, of a third stringer
• 20:45
Speaker 3: in any major college conference or team that had to
• 20:49
Speaker 3: sit out because of academic issues.
• 20:52
  Speaker 5: It's been a long time.
• 20:53
  Speaker 6: In the 80s.
• 20:54
Speaker 3: And 90s, that was an annual thing.
• 20:56
Speaker 8: But is that AI?
• 20:58
Speaker 4: Pretty much all students are passing in college now with AI.
• 21:03
Speaker 4: My point is to say that Academic issues almost don't
• 21:07
Speaker 4: exist anymore, whether it's AI or something else. So why
• 21:11
Speaker 4: are we living under this farce as though.
• 21:13
Speaker 3: Everybody, they're not going to school for the academic program.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: They're not student athletes anymore.
• 21:19
Speaker 4: And look, I'm 100% with you when you say that
• 21:24
  Speaker 4: because I believe that's 100% true. Now, there'll be people
• 21:28
Speaker 4: out there who's going to say, well, how are they
• 21:31
  Speaker 4: saying that.
• 21:32
  Speaker 3: About no schools?
• 21:36
Speaker 4: Because if you're blind enough to assume that top athletes
• 21:42
Speaker 4: at top schools and even small schools who are players
• 21:46
Speaker 4: on a sports team are not playing, even though they
• 21:51
Speaker 4: may be ineligible, or that coaches are talking to the
• 21:57
Speaker 4: teachers to help them out. Hey, can you work that
• 22:01
Speaker 4: out and get them eligible instead of that D?
• 22:04
Speaker 3: Can you get them a C? Well, coach, yeah, okay,
• 22:07
Speaker 3: I can do that. I know you're not saying that.
• 22:10
Speaker 3: I'm not saying that, but what I'm saying is that
• 22:12
Speaker 3: you got a tutor, you got AI, you got study hall.
• 22:18
Speaker 3: It's impossible to fail. Right.
• 22:20
  Speaker 6: It really is.
• 22:21
Speaker 4: It's impossible to fail college now. And you don't got
• 22:24
Speaker 4: to major in chemistry. I can major in chemistry.
• 22:26
  Speaker 6: Again, I won't.
• 22:27
Speaker 3: Every major is valuable. But it's impossible to fail if
• 22:31
Speaker 3: you go to class, go to tutor, and use AI.
• 22:34
Speaker 8: And a lot of them probably are online classes. They
• 22:36
Speaker 8: don't even have to go to class. I mean, back
• 22:38
Speaker 8: in the day, that didn't exist. And so that probably
• 22:41
Speaker 8: got a lot of those kids in trouble are the
• 22:43
Speaker 8: ones that just didn't show.
• 22:44
Speaker 3: Up for class. Didn't go to class. You know, that's
• 22:46
  Speaker 3: half the battle.
• 22:46
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 22:47
Speaker 9: So this is another thing about having more money in sports.
• 22:51
Speaker 9: I mean, they have tons of tutors on staff for
• 22:54
Speaker 9: the football team. They have– I hate to say it,
• 22:58
Speaker 9: but it's true. They keep a list of the, quote,
• 23:01
  Speaker 9: good teachers.
• 23:03
Speaker 6: Sure. They make these athletes schedules.
• 23:05
Speaker 9: They don't let the athletes schedule themselves.
• 23:07
  Speaker 3: No way.
• 23:08
  Speaker 6: No.
• 23:09
Speaker 9: They say, oh, no, no, no, Mr. Smith was an
• 23:11
Speaker 9: easy English teacher. We're putting you in his– We knew that.
• 23:13
Speaker 3: We knew that. Back in the day, you knew who
• 23:17
Speaker 3: not to take. And the thing is, now coaches and
• 23:20
Speaker 3: athletic departments have a financial incentive– To make sure you pass.
• 23:25
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 23:25
Speaker 3: They can't invest two, three, four, five million dollars in
• 23:29
Speaker 3: a plan. With a five, you're not going to be eligible.
• 23:31
Speaker 3: They can't do that. That's impossible.
• 23:33
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 23:33
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 23:34
Speaker 5: That would be something.
• 23:34
Speaker 8: To explore because really and truthfully, you do not hear
• 23:38
  Speaker 8: of that anymore.
• 23:38
  Speaker 7: No.
• 23:39
  Speaker 5: Ever.
• 23:40
Speaker 3: And remember back in the day, all the time.
• 23:41
Speaker 5: It happened all the time.
• 23:42
Speaker 8: You know, players were having to sit out bowl games
• 23:44
Speaker 8: because the grades came out.
• 23:46
Speaker 5: And they didn't, you know, make it.
• 23:48
Speaker 3: The basketball players couldn't play until the second semester until
• 23:52
Speaker 3: they got their grades up. Remember, they had to sit
• 23:53
Speaker 3: out like the preseason.
• 23:55
Speaker 5: We should do some research on that.
• 23:57
  Speaker 3: That is 100%.
• 23:58
Speaker 4: And I can remember, you know, after my first semester
• 24:02
Speaker 4: at Marshall– Coach calling me in and saying, like, look,
• 24:07
Speaker 4: this ain't going to work. You're not going to be here.
• 24:10
Speaker 4: You're not going to be playing if you don't get
• 24:12
  Speaker 4: your grades up.
• 24:13
Speaker 5: And that was on you.
• 24:14
Speaker 3: That was on me.
• 24:15
Speaker 5: You had no tutor.
• 24:16
Speaker 7: You had no help.
• 24:17
Speaker 5: It was on you.
• 24:18
Speaker 3: And, again, my thing is just, like, I just don't–
• 24:21
Speaker 3: we got to stop pretending like this isn't what it is.
• 24:24
Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that– and maybe they could do–
• 24:28
Speaker 3: maybe if some guys want to do, like, a two-year
• 24:30
Speaker 3: academic program– But you pay you play four years. You
• 24:34
Speaker 3: have five years to play. Maybe you just need to
• 24:36
Speaker 3: get some something. Maybe there needs to be a requirement
• 24:40
Speaker 3: that you graduate from some level of something. But let's
• 24:43
Speaker 3: not pretend like this is a traditional college football because
• 24:46
  Speaker 3: it's not.
• 24:48
Speaker 5: And, you know, what makes it so hard is to
• 24:50
  Speaker 5: hear that.
• 24:55
  Speaker 7: It's a reality, man.
• 24:56
Speaker 4: I mean, when you hear that, and I think I've
• 25:00
Speaker 4: even been saying it in another way, so I can't
• 25:05
Speaker 4: even fight you on.
• 25:06
Speaker 3: It, but when I hear you say it.
• 25:08
Speaker 5: It makes you sad.
• 25:09
Speaker 3: Yes, it makes me think like.
• 25:11
Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, you mean I'm just going to go
• 25:13
Speaker 4: to Marshall and be on the football team and play
• 25:16
Speaker 4: football and that's it?
• 25:17
Speaker 3: Because the only ones who are traditional college athletes, I
• 25:20
Speaker 3: think that's why they're included, is the Olympic sports because
• 25:24
Speaker 3: they don't necessarily have a pathway to make millions upon
• 25:26
Speaker 3: millions when they graduate or even millions upon millions. They
• 25:30
Speaker 3: don't have the eyes on them. So if you take football,
• 25:32
Speaker 3: that's why I think it has to be somewhat separate
• 25:35
Speaker 3: rules for football, basketball, and women's basketball. It has to
• 25:39
Speaker 3: be something. And I think track is inching that way
• 25:42
Speaker 3: too if it ever can get right and maybe even
• 25:44
Speaker 3: some soccer programs. But specifically for the revenue-generating sports, whatever
• 25:49
Speaker 3: that is at your particular institution, And again, to your point, Matt,
• 25:52
Speaker 3: that's or excuse me, Lisa, that may be sort of
• 25:56
Speaker 3: an issue when we talk about that federal overreach, because
• 25:59
Speaker 3: though it's going to look a little different depending from
• 26:02
Speaker 3: university to university, it's going to look a little different
• 26:05
Speaker 3: from state to state. Obviously, when you talk about an
• 26:08
Speaker 3: NIL deal and get no sort of ancillary deals outside
• 26:11
Speaker 3: of whatever the university is paying for you. major markets
• 26:14
Speaker 3: still sort of count. So if you're in the Miami,
• 26:18
Speaker 3: if you're in Southern California, if you're in Chicago, those
• 26:21
Speaker 3: are still going to be markets in which you can
• 26:23
Speaker 3: sort of monopolize, or excuse me, cash in on your
• 26:27
Speaker 3: NIL differently than if you're in a smaller market community.
• 26:31
  Speaker 3: So I think.
• 26:32
  Speaker 5: I mean, I think it's a good thing. I mean,
• 26:33
Speaker 5: I think it kind of.
• 26:34
  Speaker 3: Overall, it's a good thing. I think it's something Kingston
• 26:36
Speaker 3: need to be working on. Yeah, I like it.
• 26:38
Speaker 4: And that's what I was getting ready to bring up. Like, okay,
• 26:40
Speaker 4: so let's say one of those... One of those niches
• 26:47
Speaker 4: to me would be like, okay, so let's say I'm
• 26:49
Speaker 4: at West Virginia State. And West Virginia State doesn't necessarily
• 26:55
Speaker 4: have that kind of funding for me to make money.
• 27:03
Speaker 4: So now do I, so when I go there to
• 27:05
Speaker 4: play ball, am I just still, can I still just
• 27:09
Speaker 4: play ball and maybe get some money, maybe not?
• 27:14
Speaker 3: We're talking power five. We're not necessarily talking about lower dividend.
• 27:18
Speaker 3: When I'm talking about this, I'm talking the.
• 27:20
Speaker 4: Guys who got money. Okay, but the question, and I
• 27:23
Speaker 4: understand that. That's why I brought that up is because
• 27:27
Speaker 4: if it's here, we're going to want it here.
• 27:32
Speaker 3: You ain't going to get it there. That's not reality.
• 27:35
Speaker 6: But you got to work under the same rules.
• 27:36
Speaker 3: But it's not reality. You're not getting that.
• 27:40
  Speaker 7: That's true, though.
• 27:41
Speaker 5: Right now, that's the way it is, Matt.
• 27:43
Speaker 4: But don't you think that that would hurt? That's a
• 27:46
Speaker 4: reason why we can't give it to you?
• 27:47
Speaker 3: No, I think what needs to happen. is that I
• 27:51
Speaker 3: would eliminate, part of this, what I would do, I
• 27:54
Speaker 3: would eliminate money games. And what I'm saying to the
• 27:58
Speaker 3: big power four conferences. What do you mean when you
• 28:00
Speaker 3: say money games? I'm saying Marshall's not playing Notre Dame
• 28:04
Speaker 3: no more. Well, I ain't saying that they could play.
• 28:06
Speaker 3: I'm saying like State's not playing Marshall. That's over. And
• 28:11
Speaker 3: what I'm saying is that. The Power Four conferences, Power
• 28:16
Speaker 3: Four schools, when they talk about media rights and all
• 28:18
Speaker 3: these different things and all the money that's going to
• 28:19
Speaker 3: be coming in, they got to kick some of that
• 28:21
Speaker 3: money down. Now we ain't got to play each other,
• 28:24
Speaker 3: but it's got to be a little bit. So now states,
• 28:27
Speaker 3: they may not be at a $ 50 million budget, but
• 28:30
Speaker 3: maybe they could be at a million dollars.
• 28:32
Speaker 4: So would that be Marshall, WVU dropping dollars to state?
• 28:37
Speaker 4: I wouldn't say not school to school.
• 28:39
  Speaker 3: Not necessarily.
• 28:42
Speaker 3: I'm saying power four, you're dropping money down to the
• 28:46
Speaker 3: FCS and you're dropping money down to the Division II.
• 28:48
Speaker 5: And here's another point.
• 28:49
Speaker 8: I like all those ideas about the money dropping, but
• 28:52
Speaker 8: I always like money dropping. But especially like you think
• 28:56
Speaker 8: about with the degrees, maybe that could be part of
• 28:59
Speaker 8: an option. Like whenever these kids are being recruited to
• 29:02
Speaker 8: come to their school to play for money, you could say, oh,
• 29:05
Speaker 8: if you want to take less money from us, you
• 29:08
Speaker 8: can go to class and get your degree.
• 29:10
  Speaker 5: You can get.
• 29:11
Speaker 8: You know, instead of, you have a choice for them. Like,
• 29:14
Speaker 8: you can say, okay, you can get this amount of
• 29:16
Speaker 8: money and not be a student. Or you get this
• 29:18
Speaker 8: amount of money, which is less, and earn your degree.
• 29:21
Speaker 3: Or more, like, maybe you incentivize them to go to class.
• 29:24
Speaker 3: You think it'd be hard? Yeah, I would think that
• 29:27
Speaker 3: would make sense to Hollis. Or maybe not.
• 29:30
  Speaker 6: But again.
• 29:31
Speaker 5: Maybe in my brain. My brain was thinking differently. I
• 29:33
  Speaker 5: don't know.
• 29:34
Speaker 4: But to that, like, I'm opting out of the class, like,
• 29:40
Speaker 4: I'm automatically opting out.
• 29:42
Speaker 3: I just want the money.
• 29:43
Speaker 8: If you're going to a Notre Dame or an Alabama
• 29:45
Speaker 8: or some prestigious school.
• 29:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, I couldn't see opting out.
• 29:47
Speaker 5: I'm going to class. That's a resume maybe.
• 29:51
Speaker 3: If I'm going to Duke, I'm going to class.
• 29:53
Speaker 8: Yeah, because, you know, not everybody's going to play NFL level.
• 29:57
Speaker 8: And so, you know, that's the reality too. These college
• 30:00
Speaker 8: kids that go and play for money, most of them
• 30:02
Speaker 8: aren't going to make it.
• 30:03
Speaker 3: To the professional level.
• 30:04
Speaker 4: There's going to be a ton of failed opportunities for
• 30:10
  Speaker 4: players to.
• 30:12
Speaker 5: When they just play for money. What about later in life?
• 30:15
  Speaker 5: I mean, a million dollars.
• 30:16
Speaker 3: Sounds like a lot. But let me say this. Part
• 30:21
Speaker 3: of this, too, is that I think you have 10
• 30:24
Speaker 3: years to graduate. So that scholarship is good for 10 years.
• 30:28
Speaker 3: So if you go to school, you go to the NFL,
• 30:32
Speaker 3: maybe in three years, you're a couple credits shy. You
• 30:35
Speaker 3: got 10 years or so. There's a time period in
• 30:37
Speaker 3: which you can go back and Get your degree. So
• 30:41
Speaker 3: they so they so they built that into.
• 30:44
Speaker 5: So that's built into this.
• 30:45
  Speaker 6: So, yes.
• 30:46
Speaker 9: Is it really smart to have a bunch of uneducated
• 30:49
Speaker 9: millionaires out in the world?
• 30:51
Speaker 3: That's what we already have.
• 30:53
Speaker 9: But if we're taking away the education component, it's going
• 30:57
  Speaker 9: to be more.
• 30:58
Speaker 3: I mean, we have a lot more. What I'm saying
• 30:59
Speaker 3: is like we're just doing– I agree.
• 31:01
  Speaker 5: I don't like it. I don't like it.
• 31:03
Speaker 3: All we're doing is turning on the light because that
• 31:05
Speaker 3: stuff has already happened. When you look at these particular
• 31:07
Speaker 3: basketball guys, they're one and done. Those guys don't go
• 31:11
  Speaker 3: to class.
• 31:11
  Speaker 6: Well, fair.
• 31:12
Speaker 3: That's fair. They'll go to class. from September to December
• 31:17
  Speaker 3: and then after.
• 31:17
Speaker 4: That they're done and I truly and I see Hollis
• 31:23
Speaker 4: as a respectful intelligent young man who believes in education
• 31:32
Speaker 4: but I think what he has done is rationally looked
• 31:34
Speaker 4: at at sports today.
• 31:38
  Speaker 6: Oh, I know.
• 31:39
Speaker 5: He's just making a point. And making this point.
• 31:41
  Speaker 3: Not that he.
• 31:42
Speaker 5: Agrees or disagrees with it. Yeah.
• 31:44
  Speaker 3: And, and, and I, I.
• 31:46
Speaker 4: Give him that prop just to say, somebody's going to
• 31:51
Speaker 4: say that that's the craziest thing ever.
• 31:54
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 31:54
Speaker 4: You know, but the question, the question that you have
• 31:59
Speaker 4: to ask yourself when you ask that question is how,
• 32:04
Speaker 4: What is the reality?
• 32:05
Speaker 3: Where is the reality that we are in right now? Yeah.
• 32:09
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 32:10
Speaker 3: You know, where are we right now? It's true.
• 32:13
Speaker 4: Is it? How effective?
• 32:14
Speaker 5: They're just not advertising it. It's there. It exists.
• 32:16
Speaker 3: Because my thing is not that I don't care about
• 32:19
Speaker 3: what happens to the players, but the thing I want
• 32:21
Speaker 3: to see and why I kind of like this, although
• 32:25
Speaker 3: I think it's some things that need to be worked out,
• 32:28
Speaker 3: is that, number one, we need to get the conference.
• 32:30
Speaker 3: Conferences need to be realigned back right. So we need
• 32:34
Speaker 3: to get that together. You shouldn't be for WV. You
• 32:37
Speaker 3: shouldn't be flying cross country for half their games. Point blank.
• 32:40
Speaker 4: We've been saying that they should be in the ACC
• 32:42
Speaker 4: or we need to make the Atlantic 10 or Big
• 32:44
Speaker 4: 10 or excuse me, Big East back.
• 32:45
Speaker 5: So get the conference regions regional.
• 32:48
Speaker 3: Get the conferences back. Correct. Number two, we have to
• 32:53
Speaker 3: create stability. as far as players in school. Again, I
• 32:57
Speaker 3: like players having abilities and options to transfer, but at
• 33:01
Speaker 3: the same time, you're gonna kill the sport Because you
• 33:05
Speaker 3: hear people every week talking about, man, college football is
• 33:07
Speaker 3: not what it was because I don't know these guys.
• 33:10
Speaker 3: College sports is built on the continuity of saying you've
• 33:13
Speaker 3: seen that guy from a freshman to a senior.
• 33:16
  Speaker 5: Legacy.
• 33:16
  Speaker 6: Legacy.
• 33:17
Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Then you see their sons
• 33:20
Speaker 3: come and play and their uncles and brothers, and it
• 33:23
Speaker 3: becomes that family thing. So you have to get those
• 33:26
Speaker 3: two things right, regardless of anything else I might have
• 33:29
Speaker 3: said here. You've got to get those things right in
• 33:33
Speaker 3: order to, because I'm telling you, College football, and particularly
• 33:37
Speaker 3: college basketball, is the most vulnerable. It could be a
• 33:40
Speaker 3: day where March Madness doesn't even mean much anymore, and
• 33:43
Speaker 3: that would be a sad day because we don't know
• 33:45
  Speaker 3: these dudes.
• 33:46
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 33:47
Speaker 3: Do you think, too— Or ladies. Well, no, it's dudes,
• 33:50
  Speaker 3: ladies thing.
• 33:52
Speaker 4: The most interesting thing to me is I always question—
• 33:59
Speaker 4: The desire that a player, male or female, has to
• 34:05
Speaker 4: the game compared to the money in which.
• 34:11
Speaker 3: They are able to get. Because.
• 34:17
Speaker 4: If you'd have gave me $ 10, it would probably not
• 34:19
Speaker 4: have changed. Oh, I shouldn't use $ 10. You could have
• 34:21
Speaker 4: gave me $ 1, 000 to play each game at Marshall. I
• 34:26
Speaker 4: don't think it would have changed anything in my rationale
• 34:30
Speaker 4: of how I'm going to play the game.
• 34:32
Speaker 3: But I think you came. And I agree. I know
• 34:35
Speaker 3: where you're going to go. The problem starts in youth
• 34:39
  Speaker 3: and travel.
• 34:40
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 34:40
Speaker 3: Because now what happens is, and I think, AAU basketball
• 34:45
Speaker 3: and travel sports are the worst thing to happen to sports.
• 34:48
Speaker 3: We all agree. We can agree to that. That is
• 34:50
Speaker 3: the worst thing. Because what happens is that, you know,
• 34:53
Speaker 3: a former high school coach, I won't mention his name,
• 34:56
Speaker 3: he was telling me a story. You had a kid
• 34:59
Speaker 3: who was playing, you know, we'll just say in the
• 35:01
Speaker 3: western part of the county at a middle school. He's
• 35:04
  Speaker 3: from there. He's playing there. He's a big-time player, middle
• 35:07
Speaker 3: school player. He's about to go to high school. And
• 35:10
Speaker 3: what happens is those kids... Play AAU basketball. He's a
• 35:15
Speaker 3: football player. But they play basketball together. They recruit him
• 35:18
Speaker 3: on their AAU basketball team. And then from there, they
• 35:21
Speaker 3: convince him to go to their school in the Charleston
• 35:25
Speaker 3: parts of the county. So instead of him going to
• 35:28
Speaker 3: the school that he probably should have went to and
• 35:30
Speaker 3: maybe helping that school be better, he goes to the
• 35:32
Speaker 3: other school. And that's the culture in which we have now.
• 35:36
Speaker 3: And it's even getting more pervasive because now it just
• 35:39
Speaker 3: used to be basketball. Now it's football. Now it's baseball.
• 35:41
Speaker 3: Now it's soccer. Everybody's travel now. So it creates a
• 35:45
Speaker 3: mindset in which you're loyal to like the group of
• 35:50
Speaker 3: friends that you want to hang out with. And as
• 35:53
Speaker 3: opposed to the community in school.
• 35:54
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 35:55
Speaker 3: And who you quote travel with. Who you quote on
• 35:58
  Speaker 3: travel with.
• 35:58
Speaker 4: Because let's just say me and Hollis decide we want
• 36:01
Speaker 4: to get a travel football team. And we go around
• 36:04
Speaker 4: to all these different teams and say, hey, you know,
• 36:08
Speaker 4: we like your quarterback, not talking to the coach, talking
• 36:11
Speaker 4: to the parent. We would love to have him on
• 36:13
Speaker 4: our travel football team and, you know, he'll make a
• 36:15
Speaker 4: little money and, you know, we travel around. 99% chances
• 36:22
Speaker 4: they're going to take that.
• 36:24
Speaker 3: They're going to take that. Because we're going to sell them.
• 36:28
Speaker 5: And social media, too. It just adds to it. That's
• 36:31
Speaker 5: a good point, too.
• 36:32
Speaker 4: And the reality is to it is my sale is
• 36:37
Speaker 4: you're going to be seen.
• 36:40
  Speaker 3: Okay. You're, you're, you're 10 years old. You're 12 years old.
• 36:45
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 36:45
Speaker 3: You're going to be seen. You're not going to be seen.
• 36:48
Speaker 3: You're going to be seen, but it's going to be
• 36:51
  Speaker 3: by people.
• 36:51
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 36:52
Speaker 4: You're not going to be seen. You know, there's nobody,
• 36:55
Speaker 4: unless you are a phenom 12 year old.
• 36:58
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 36:58
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 36:59
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 36:59
Speaker 4: That's, bigger and better than everybody else around in the country,
• 37:04
Speaker 4: you're not getting looked at.
• 37:05
Speaker 8: So what's the answer to this, though, guys? Do we
• 37:07
Speaker 8: regulate AAU? Do we regulate the transfer at that level?
• 37:10
  Speaker 5: We've talked about that a.
• 37:11
Speaker 3: Thousand times, so I don't know.
• 37:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think my problem with AAU is it's in season.
• 37:21
Speaker 3: It can't be in the season in which you play.
• 37:24
Speaker 5: Which I thought that was already a rule.
• 37:26
  Speaker 6: I don't know.
• 37:27
Speaker 3: It seems like it's different now.
• 37:29
Speaker 4: I think basketball, I think AAU basketball and basketball, I think,
• 37:33
Speaker 4: are in the same window.
• 37:36
Speaker 3: No, they try to separate them out.
• 37:39
Speaker 8: It's not like it used to be.
• 37:42
Speaker 3: I think there's some crossover. But I think like if
• 37:46
Speaker 3: you want to answer, here goes my answer. Right. Dance
• 37:48
Speaker 3: is always money. So I think what you if if
• 37:52
Speaker 3: I'm the NFL and again, I know this is kind
• 37:54
Speaker 3: of majoring in minor things to them. If I'm the NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, WNBA,
• 38:05
Speaker 3: I am actively working on programs, youth development programs. I'm
• 38:10
Speaker 3: going to set the league. I'm going to set the
• 38:12
Speaker 3: culture and I'm going to regulate it and I'm going
• 38:14
Speaker 3: to use my money to do it. And I'm going
• 38:16
Speaker 3: to ensure that you get back to rec league, quote unquote, athletics.
• 38:22
Speaker 3: And I think they have to come down and they
• 38:24
Speaker 3: have to set the agenda. And this is what we're doing.
• 38:27
Speaker 3: We're going to send. players, former players. We're going to
• 38:31
Speaker 3: pump money into it. We're going to partner with local communities.
• 38:35
Speaker 3: And this is what we're doing. And this is the
• 38:37
Speaker 3: rules and regulations in which we're doing it under. So
• 38:39
Speaker 3: they're setting the whole structure. Yeah, because the thing now,
• 38:43
Speaker 3: if there is a travel team, our kids are on
• 38:45
Speaker 3: the travel team. We don't like the travel team. What
• 38:48
Speaker 3: we do, me, you, and Lisa, we just go for
• 38:50
Speaker 3: our own travel team. There ain't no regulations that we
• 38:52
Speaker 3: can't do that. But if you're working under the big dog,
• 38:55
Speaker 3: you're working under the NFL or the NBA, you're We
• 38:59
Speaker 3: can try to do that, but we ain't going to
• 39:01
Speaker 3: have no facilities. We ain't going to have no money
• 39:02
  Speaker 3: or nothing.
• 39:03
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 39:03
Speaker 8: And the amount of time and money that these families
• 39:06
Speaker 8: spend on AAU Travel Ball, whatever sport it is. I mean,
• 39:10
Speaker 8: every single weekend is dominated by, you know, whatever it is,
• 39:14
Speaker 8: whatever city they're traveling to to participate in whatever sport
• 39:17
  Speaker 8: it is.
• 39:18
Speaker 5: And the cost of it's got to be unreal.
• 39:20
Speaker 3: Because you're dealing with private equity now. What happens is
• 39:23
Speaker 3: you have these finance guys coming in. And they're creating
• 39:26
Speaker 3: these tournaments and travel. And again, I don't have a
• 39:29
Speaker 3: problem with the structure. truck i don't have a problem
• 39:31
Speaker 3: with necessarily travel sports in its idea but i think
• 39:35
Speaker 3: it has to be exclusive to those individuals who are
• 39:40
Speaker 3: ready travel sports ain't for everybody Right. It ain't for everybody.
• 39:44
Speaker 3: It's really for the elites.
• 39:45
Speaker 5: If you don't have money, you can't do it.
• 39:48
Speaker 3: Well, I don't. The thing is, I would like to
• 39:50
Speaker 3: take that out of it where I'm saying, regardless of
• 39:52
Speaker 3: whether you got money, if you are an elite athlete
• 39:54
Speaker 3: and you're in Charleston, if you're Randy Moss. Yeah, there's
• 39:58
Speaker 3: going to be a summer. You need to go across
• 40:00
Speaker 3: the country and play because that's the level in which
• 40:02
Speaker 3: you're doing it. But for the other 75 percent of
• 40:05
Speaker 3: the kids, I need to stay around here and just
• 40:07
Speaker 3: get better in the summer.
• 40:08
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 40:08
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 40:09
  Speaker 7: Play here.
• 40:10
  Speaker 6: Play here.
• 40:10
Speaker 3: Play in your community. Because back in the day, I
• 40:14
Speaker 3: believe they talked about when because Randy Moss and Varian Cunningham,
• 40:18
Speaker 3: they had an AAU basketball team. They finished like second
• 40:20
Speaker 3: in the country, but they might have won it.
• 40:22
  Speaker 6: I don't know.
• 40:23
Speaker 4: But it was like at that time in which they're playing,
• 40:25
Speaker 4: this is like 93, 92 or whatever. It was way back.
• 40:29
Speaker 4: But it was like two AAU teams during that time.
• 40:32
Speaker 4: Like two in the whole state.
• 40:34
Speaker 3: So literally you had the best players, the best of
• 40:36
Speaker 3: the best playing on that team that can compete nationally.
• 40:40
Speaker 3: And that's kind of what it should be.
• 40:42
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 40:42
Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Just going out, creating a
• 40:44
Speaker 3: team with some really good players.
• 40:47
Speaker 5: Almost like an all-star team. Not just everybody.
• 40:50
Speaker 3: Not a great one.
• 40:51
Speaker 4: So to my point is, if you're going to go
• 40:54
Speaker 4: out there and just make a good all-star team, that
• 40:58
Speaker 4: you might be able to win a few games, right?
• 41:02
Speaker 3: You can beat a few people.
• 41:04
  Speaker 6: Really?
• 41:05
Speaker 3: Like, why are you.
• 41:06
Speaker 4: Why are you why am I asking you, Hollis, to
• 41:09
Speaker 4: to play to have your daughter pay this money to
• 41:12
Speaker 4: travel every weekend to to go out of out of state?
• 41:16
Speaker 5: Or it's an easy answer.
• 41:17
  Speaker 4: Money.
• 41:18
  Speaker 3: Yeah, it's money. But but I don't I don't think
• 41:21
Speaker 3: it's just limited to money. I think money is a
• 41:22
Speaker 3: part of it. I also think it's the ego. You
• 41:25
Speaker 3: think your kid is going to compete nationally. You think
• 41:29
  Speaker 3: your kid, you're 5'8, mom's 5'2, and you're playing AAU
• 41:34
Speaker 3: basketball spending thousands on the summer. Again, no offense to anybody,
• 41:38
Speaker 3: but you may want to develop before that happens. You know,
• 41:41
Speaker 3: they talked about Dale Curry. You know, Mary played for
• 41:44
Speaker 3: the Charlotte Nets. He's the father of Steph and Seth Curry.
• 41:47
Speaker 3: He took his kids out of AAU basketball. from basically
• 41:51
Speaker 3: middle school all the way to, like, their junior years
• 41:54
Speaker 3: in high school to really work on development. And that's
• 41:58
Speaker 3: probably the route. And, again, like I said, I don't
• 42:00
Speaker 3: have a problem with travel sports. I just think we're
• 42:03
Speaker 3: probably doing it wrong.
• 42:05
Speaker 4: I think we're doing it wrong, and the expectation of
• 42:08
Speaker 4: the kids who are doing it and parents that are doing.
• 42:11
  Speaker 3: It is wrong.
• 42:13
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 42:14
  Speaker 5: Needs an overhaul.
• 42:15
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 42:17
Speaker 5: Like a lot of things we talk about.
• 42:18
  Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes.

• 43:44
Speaker 2: Let's Talk. Before we get out of here. I think
• 43:48
Speaker 2: there was a game.
• 43:49
Speaker 3: Let me see. There was a game this past weekend.
• 43:53
  Speaker 1: Oh, man.
• 43:53
  Speaker 5: Oh, my God.
• 43:54
  Speaker 4: What?
• 43:55
  Speaker 2: Come on.
• 43:55
Speaker 3: What? Hey, I'm setting this one out.
• 43:57
Speaker 5: Is he doing this?
• 43:57
  Speaker 7: What?
• 43:58
Speaker 5: Is he going there?
• 43:59
  Speaker 8: What?
• 43:59
Speaker 3: What are y'all talking about?
• 44:00
  Speaker 5: I mean, oh.
• 44:01
Speaker 4: I mean, we only got a little bit of time
• 44:04
Speaker 4: left in the show.
• 44:05
  Speaker 5: Oh, my goodness.
• 44:06
Speaker 3: And I thought there was a game this weekend.
• 44:09
  Speaker 6: Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
• 44:10
Speaker 5: Yeah, there was one, Carly.
• 44:12
Speaker 3: I think there was a green team that was like seven.
• 44:16
Speaker 4: Some kind of green. They had some kind of green color.
• 44:18
Speaker 4: And they were playing the Vikings. And I think that
• 44:21
Speaker 4: somebody in the building has worn Packer stuff before the game,
• 44:29
Speaker 4: before they play a game and.
• 44:30
Speaker 3: All that kind of stuff. But I'm not seeing any
• 44:34
  Speaker 3: Packer stuff today.
• 44:36
  Speaker 6: Oh, boy.
• 44:36
Speaker 5: Well, you know, I probably deserve this. Did the game
• 44:40
  Speaker 5: not happen?
• 44:41
Speaker 8: It certainly happened, and I will tell everybody what happened.
• 44:44
  Speaker 3: Please do.
• 44:45
Speaker 8: Yes, I'm sure that you can sit and gloat and
• 44:47
Speaker 8: enjoy this little summary I have here.
• 44:50
Speaker 5: I surely did not enjoy it.
• 44:53
Speaker 8: The Vikings erased a 22-10 lead by scoring 29 unanswered.
• 44:58
Speaker 5: Points in the second half.
• 45:00
Speaker 3: With the backup quarterback?
• 45:03
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 45:04
Speaker 8: Add more salt to the wound there.
• 45:07
  Speaker 4: Thanks for refreshing.
• 45:11
Speaker 5: My memory on that part, too.
• 45:13
Speaker 8: The Carson Wentz experience was in full effect yesterday, I guess.
• 45:17
Speaker 8: But to me, I think that, and then I'll let
• 45:20
Speaker 8: you gloat some more, Carl, but I think what really
• 45:23
Speaker 8: happened with the Packers yesterday, of course, their offensive line
• 45:26
Speaker 8: just absolutely got smoked.
• 45:28
Speaker 5: I mean, they were terrible. They could not protect Jordan Love.
• 45:31
Speaker 8: You know, if they don't fix that sometime soon, Jordan
• 45:34
Speaker 8: Love will not survive this season, period.
• 45:36
Speaker 5: I mean, he was under pressure almost every play.
• 45:38
Speaker 3: Well, every team won't be as good as the Vikings.
• 45:40
  Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh.
• 45:42
Speaker 3: Did I say that out loud? Yes, you did.
• 45:44
Speaker 5: Is my mic on? Can I fire somebody tonight?
• 45:49
Speaker 3: I didn't think my mic was on.
• 45:51
Speaker 5: Am I allowed to fire somebody? Who do I need
• 45:53
  Speaker 5: to talk to?
• 45:54
Speaker 6: I turned him off.
• 45:56
Speaker 7: Oh, I love that.
• 45:57
Speaker 3: So, Lisa, let me ask you this. Do you think
• 45:59
Speaker 3: Jordan Love, do you think this is kind of it?
• 46:01
Speaker 3: This is the last year. Like, do you think he's
• 46:03
Speaker 3: on a short road?
• 46:04
  Speaker 6: No. No, I don't.
• 46:05
Speaker 8: I think that the offensive line should be, and I
• 46:07
Speaker 8: think Coach LaFleur is on the hot seat more so
• 46:10
  Speaker 8: than Jordan Love.
• 46:11
Speaker 5: Is your mic still off?
• 46:12
Speaker 6: I think head coaches do.
• 46:14
Speaker 3: If he's done after this year, they don't make it?
• 46:16
Speaker 8: To me, I think yesterday, whenever he took points off
• 46:20
Speaker 8: the board, that's just something that you don't do, especially
• 46:24
Speaker 8: if you don't already have the first down. He took
• 46:26
Speaker 8: three points off the board because there was an offside penalty,
• 46:29
Speaker 8: of course, on the Vikings. They were on the one
• 46:31
Speaker 8: yard line, but it was not enough. It was not
• 46:33
Speaker 8: enough for a first down, right?
• 46:35
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 46:35
Speaker 5: It was still fourth down. So, oh, your mic's back on.
• 46:38
  Speaker 5: I don't know.
• 46:39
Speaker 8: And so they go for it on fourth and one.
• 46:42
Speaker 8: And of course, he got, you know, Jordan Love got stuffed.
• 46:44
Speaker 8: They didn't get any points out of it. They had
• 46:46
Speaker 8: three points on the board, the scoreboard. And then they
• 46:49
Speaker 8: chose to take those points off the board, which to
• 46:50
Speaker 8: me is taboo, right?
• 46:52
  Speaker 5: Your coaches?
• 46:53
Speaker 3: I would say. That's always kind of my role.
• 46:55
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 46:56
Speaker 3: Depending on the situation, but I'm always probably points first.
• 46:58
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 46:59
Speaker 8: So, yeah, that was my Sunday evening went from yay, Pac,
• 47:04
Speaker 8: to oh, man, I got to look at Carl DeMar
• 47:06
Speaker 8: during that podcast and I know he's going to bring
• 47:08
  Speaker 8: it up.
• 47:09
  Speaker 5: But it's. It's okay. It's okay.
• 47:11
Speaker 3: Well, I really wasn't— You guys earned it.
• 47:13
Speaker 5: I mean, you earned the victory.
• 47:15
Speaker 3: I wasn't really trying to press it, you know. Yeah,
• 47:17
  Speaker 3: you were.
• 47:18
  Speaker 5: Was I?
• 47:18
  Speaker 10: Sort of.
• 47:18
  Speaker 3: I didn't feel like it.
• 47:20
  Speaker 5: It's okay.
• 47:20
Speaker 8: Like I said, nobody in this room has Christmas card
• 47:24
Speaker 8: lists here that we're expecting from each other, so it's okay.
• 47:28
  Speaker 5: It's all good.
• 47:30
Speaker 3: I have learned to enjoy— Torturing me? Viking wins.
• 47:39
  Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
• 47:40
Speaker 4: Against teams that either I have former players that played
• 47:47
Speaker 4: there or friends here on the show. I have learned
• 47:55
  Speaker 4: to appreciate Viking.
• 47:56
Speaker 5: Did you call Sterling?
• 47:58
Speaker 3: Actually, he actually did call me.
• 48:00
Speaker 5: Did he really? Yeah.
• 48:02
Speaker 3: So, you know, I really feel like when.
• 48:08
Speaker 4: The season is beginning, when it gets close, you get
• 48:11
Speaker 4: really happy, bubbly. You wear your green hat in the building. Oh,
• 48:20
  Speaker 4: my goodness.
• 48:20
Speaker 3: All those kinds of things.
• 48:22
Speaker 5: You don't have to fire me this week. I'll probably
• 48:24
  Speaker 5: just quit.
• 48:24
Speaker 3: There you go. Oh, my gosh.
• 48:28
Speaker 5: Miss Bubbly Green Girl. Is that what I am now?
• 48:31
  Speaker 6: Yes, yes.
• 48:31
Speaker 5: Miss Bubbly Green Girl. How precious.
• 48:34
Speaker 3: You have been, you know. And so, ladies and gentlemen,
• 48:37
Speaker 3: I'm just, all I'm doing as the host.
• 48:39
Speaker 5: Hollis, help me here.
• 48:42
Speaker 3: I'm staying out of this.
• 48:43
Speaker 5: He just left me here. I'll stay out of this.
• 48:45
Speaker 3: I'll let y'all squab it out. Just all I want
• 48:50
Speaker 3: you to say. All I want you to say.
• 48:52
Speaker 5: When we come back and beat you at Lambeau.
• 48:54
Speaker 3: That's not going to happen. Y'all play again.
• 48:57
Speaker 5: We play again. Same division. I'm not going to be
• 49:01
  Speaker 5: kind anymore.
• 49:01
Speaker 3: Okay, let me ask y'all this.
• 49:03
Speaker 5: You're not being kind.
• 49:04
Speaker 3: Do y'all like the NFL schedule in which you open
• 49:07
Speaker 3: up with a division opponent?
• 49:09
Speaker 5: No, I do not. And I'm sure he does.
• 49:11
Speaker 3: He wins and he loses. I'm just saying in general.
• 49:13
  Speaker 7: I don't like it.
• 49:13
Speaker 3: You don't like it at all? In general, yeah. I'd
• 49:16
Speaker 3: really rather play out of conference.
• 49:18
Speaker 8: Those division games right out of the gate.
• 49:23
  Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know.
• 49:24
  Speaker 3: I love it.
• 49:25
Speaker 4: See, because here's the problem with the division games like
• 49:28
Speaker 4: right out of the shoot. You're not really– sometimes you're
• 49:31
Speaker 4: not really– Like, set yet. You haven't got everybody set
• 49:36
Speaker 4: where you need them.
• 49:37
Speaker 5: And that loss hurts more than others.
• 49:39
  Speaker 3: Yes, it hurts.
• 49:40
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 49:40
Speaker 3: So that means you got to work harder in the
• 49:42
Speaker 3: offseason to get right. Like a loss to the Packers.
• 49:45
Speaker 3: First game out. And it would have been– I think
• 49:55
  Speaker 3: that's a downgrade. At home. That's a devastating loss. That's
• 49:58
  Speaker 3: a devastating loss.
• 49:59
Speaker 5: And it was for us, too.
• 50:00
  Speaker 3: So it's bad.
• 50:02
  Speaker 6: It is.
• 50:02
Speaker 3: And it's hard. So y'all don't like that?
• 50:04
Speaker 8: No, because we're thinking about– these games are playoff implications.
• 50:07
  Speaker 3: All day.
• 50:08
  Speaker 6: All day.
• 50:08
  Speaker 5: In September.
• 50:09
  Speaker 9: In September.
• 50:10
Speaker 3: The playoffs don't happen until December. I love the NFL.
• 50:11
  Speaker 5: I think it's wrong.
• 50:13
  Speaker 3: I love it.
• 50:14
  Speaker 5: I don't like it.
• 50:14
Speaker 3: Come out the gate.
• 50:16
  Speaker 6: Be ready.
• 50:17
Speaker 4: Well, we got to get out of here. But– I
• 50:21
Speaker 4: just want to make sure, Lisa, you're okay. There's no,
• 50:24
Speaker 4: you know, no issues, no tears. You know, I got
• 50:29
  Speaker 4: some napkins.
• 50:29
  Speaker 6: I'm good.
• 50:30
  Speaker 5: I'm good.
• 50:30
  Speaker 3: You're good?
• 50:31
  Speaker 5: I'm good, yeah.
• 50:31
Speaker 3: All right. Just wait. When do we play again?
• 50:33
  Speaker 5: Oh, believe me.
• 50:34
Speaker 8: I'll look it up and be sure to let the
• 50:36
Speaker 8: audience know the next time.
• 50:38
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 50:38
Speaker 5: All right. It'll be at Lambeau. Don't worry.
• 50:40
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 50:41
Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to get out of here,
• 50:43
Speaker 4: and I'm going to say something I've never said before.
• 50:45
  Speaker 3: Let's go, Vikes.
• 50:46
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 50:50
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 50:50
Speaker 3: You got to work.
• 50:52
Speaker 7: You got to work. You got to work.
• 51:12
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 51:12
Speaker 7: You got to work.
• 51:13
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 51:14
Speaker 7: You got to work.
• 51:14
Speaker 12: I'm going hard like Kobe inside the gym.
• 51:17
Speaker 7: I'm a diamond in dirt. I hit in gym. Going
• 51:21
  Speaker 7: for greatness.
• 51:21
Speaker 12: I got to win by any means because I don't
• 51:23
Speaker 12: know when I'll be back again.
• 51:25
  Speaker 6: Going hard.
• 51:25
Speaker 7: I got to get it, man. I can't even lie.
• 51:28
Speaker 12: I put in so much sweat. My body running dry.
• 51:30
Speaker 12: I shed so many tears. Now I don't want to cry.
• 51:33
Speaker 12: Now it's coming easy to me.
• 51:34
  Speaker 8: I'm like.
• 51:35
Speaker 7: You got to work. You got to work. You got
• 52:05
  Speaker 7: to work.
• 52:06
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 52:06
Speaker 7: You got to work.
• 52:07
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 52:08
Speaker 7: You got to work. I knew I'd be a legend
• 52:09
Speaker 7: if I put in the time. Never quit.
• 52:11
Speaker 12: Never give up if you falling behind. Anything you work
• 52:14
Speaker 12: for comes to you by design. Obstacles will never stop
• 52:17
Speaker 12: you because it's all in your mind. If you fall,
• 52:19
Speaker 12: dust it off and get back up on your feet.
• 52:21
Speaker 12: Anything could be a win.
• 52:23
  Speaker 3: Yup. Even defeat.
• 52:24
Speaker 12: That's that sugar bath for you.
• 52:25
  Speaker 6: Wise victory sweet.
• 52:27
Speaker 7: Couldn't play with bitch. We'll see you next time.
