Chapter thirty seven, in which it is shown that Phileas Fogg gained nothing by
• 0:05
his tour around the world unless it were happiness. Yes, Phileas Fogg in
• 0:14
person. The reader will remember that at five minutes passed eight in the evening,
• 0:20
about five and twenty hours after the arrival of the travelers in London,
• 0:25
Passepartout had been sent by his master to engage the services of the Reverend Samuel
• 0:30
Wilson in a certain marriage ceremony which was to take place the next day.
• 0:36
Pass Partout went on his errand enchanted, He soon reached the clergyman's house,
• 0:40
but found him not at home. Pass Partout waited a good twenty minutes,
• 0:44
and when he left the reverend gentleman it was thirty five minutes past eight.
• 0:49
But in what a state he was, With his hair in disorder and without
• 0:53
his hat. He ran along the street as never man was seen to run,
• 0:57
before, over turning passers by rushing over the sidewalk like a water spout.
• 1:03
In three minutes he was in Savle Row again and staggered back into mister
• 1:07
Fogg's room. He could not speak. What is the matter, asked mister
• 1:14
Fogg. Why Master gasped past Part two. Marriage impossible, impossible, impossible
• 1:25
for tomorrow? Why so because tomorrow is Sunday, Monday, replied mister Fogg.
• 1:37
No, today is Saturday, Saturday. Impossible. Yes, yes,
• 1:45
yes, yes, cried past part two. You have made a mistake of
• 1:49
one day. We arrived twenty four hours ahead of time, but there are
• 1:53
only ten minutes left past Part two had seized his master by the collar and
• 1:59
was dreagging him along with irresistible force. Phileas Fogg thus kidnapped, without having
• 2:05
time to think, left his house, jumped into a cab, promised one
• 2:09
hundred pounds to the cabman, and, having run over two dogs and overturned
• 2:15
five carriages, reached the Reform Club. The clock indicated a quarter before nine
• 2:21
when he appeared in the Great Saloon. Phileas Fogg had accomplished the journey round
• 2:25
the world in eighty days. Phileas Fogg had won his wager of twenty thousand
• 2:32
pounds. How was it that a man so exact and fastidious could have made
• 2:38
this error of a day? How came he to think that he had arrived
• 2:43
in London on Saturday, the twenty first day of December, When it was
• 2:46
really Friday the twentieth, the seventy ninth day only from his departure. The
• 2:53
cause of the error is very simple. Phileas Fogg had, without suspecting it,
• 2:59
gained one day on his journey, and this merely because he had traveled
• 3:02
constantly eastward. He would, on the contrary, have lost a day had
• 3:07
he gone in the opposite direction, that is westward. In journeying eastward,
• 3:14
he had gone towards the Sun, and the days therefore diminished for him as
• 3:17
many times four minutes as he crossed degrees in this direction. There are three
• 3:23
hundred and sixty degrees on the circumference of the Earth, and these three hundred
• 3:28
and sixty degrees, multiplied by four minutes, gives precisely twenty four hours.
• 3:35
That is the day unconsciously gained. In other words, while Phileas Fogg,
• 3:39
going eastward, saw the Sun pass the meridian eighty times, his friends in
• 3:46
London only saw it pass the meridian seventy nine times. This is why they
• 3:51
awaited him at the Reform Club on Saturday and not Sunday as mister Fogg thought,
• 3:57
and Passepartout's famous family Waku, which had always kept London. Time would
• 4:02
have betrayed this fact if it had marked the days as well as the hours
• 4:06
and the minutes. Phileas Fogg then had won the twenty thousand pounds, but
• 4:13
as he had spent nearly nineteen thousand on the way, the pecuniary game was
• 4:17
small. His object was, however, to be victorious, and not to
• 4:21
win money. He divided the one thousand pounds that remained between Passepartout and the
• 4:28
unfortunate fix, against whom he cherished no grudge. He deducted, however,
• 4:33
from Passepartout's share, the cost of the gas which had burned in his room
• 4:38
for nineteen hundred and twenty hours, for the sake of regularity. That evening,
• 4:44
mister Fogg, as tranquil and phlegmatic as ever, said to Aouda,
• 4:48
is our marriage still agreeable to you? Mister Fogg replied she, it is
• 4:56
for me to ask that question. You were ruined, but now you are
• 5:00
rich again. Pardon me, madam, My fortune belongs to you. If
• 5:05
you had not suggested our marriage, my servant would not have gone to the
• 5:10
Reverend Samuel Wilson's I should not have been apprized of my error, and dear
• 5:15
mister Fogg, said the young woman, dear Aouda, replied Phileas Fogg.
• 5:25
It need not be said that the marriage took place forty eight hours after and
• 5:29
that Passepartout, blowing and dazzling, gave the bride away. Had he not
• 5:34
saved her? And was he not entitled to this honor? The next day,
• 5:40
as soon as it was light, Passepartout rapped vigorously at his master's door.
• 5:45
Mister Fogg opened it and asked, what's the matter? Passpartout? What
• 5:50
is it, sir? Why I've just this instant found out what that we
• 5:59
might have made the two of the world in only seventy eight days. No
• 6:03
doubt returned mister Fogg by not crossing India. But if I had not crossed
• 6:10
India, I should not have saved Aouda. She would not have been my
• 6:13
wife, and mister Fogg quietly shut the door. Phileas Fogg had won his
• 6:20
wager and had made his journey around the world in eighty days. To do
• 6:25
this, he had employed every means of conveyance steamers, railways, carriages,
• 6:30
yachts, trading vessels, sledges, elephants. The eccentric gentleman had throughout displayed
• 6:38
all his marvelous qualities of coolness and exactitude. But what, then, what
• 6:43
had he really gained by all this trouble? What had he brought back from
• 6:46
this long and weary journey? Nothing, say you, perhaps so, nothing
• 6:54
but a charming woman who, strange as it may appear, made him the
• 6:59
happiest of men. Truly, would you not, for less than that make
• 7:03
the tour around the world? End of chapter and of story.
