- 0:18Autocross, life skills, and the woman driver.
- 0:21By Chris Lizotte.
- 0:22After a career in advertising, some of it spent writing commercials, Dr.
- 0:26Lizotte earned a master's degree at Eastern Michigan University and a PhD
- 0:30from Bowling Green State University.
- 0:32Now working as an independent scholar, she investigates the relationship
- 0:35between women and cars in a variety of contexts, including women's
- 0:39participation in traditionally masculine cultures, including motorsports.
- 0:44As well as representations of women and cars in popular culture.
- 0:47Dr.
- 0:47Lizotte's current project focuses on women's growing involvement in
- 0:51autocross, the reasons for women's participations, and the methods by
- 0:54which women negotiate entry into a historically masculine environment,
- 0:58and how the autocross experience contributes to women's identity.
- 1:04Good afternoon, everyone, and thank you for your interest in this presentation,
- 1:09which focuses on women's participation in the motorsport of autocross.
- 1:13I'm Crystal Zahn, an independent scholar.
- 1:15The overarching subject of my research is the relationship between women
- 1:19and cars and a variety of content.
- 1:21Three years ago, in November of 2019, I attended the Yarga Singer Conference
- 1:26on the invitation of Don Capps.
- 1:28At that time, I had recently accepted an invitation to write a chapter
- 1:31focused on the history of women only racing for an upcoming book on the
- 1:35history and politics of motorsports.
- 1:37I called up on the conference, therefore, not only to become better informed
- 1:40regarding motorsports scholarship, but to also conduct research at
- 1:44the IMRRC, a big shout out to Jenny Ambrose who helped me in that endeavor.
- 1:49As part of my investigation for this book project, I interviewed a number
- 1:52of women who posted about their involvement in motorsports on the
- 1:56SCCA Facebook Women on Track page.
- 2:00While the women participated in many motorsports arenas, the overwhelming
- 2:04majority, I discovered, ran an autocross.
- 2:07As motorsports are historically unwelcoming to women, I was intrigued
- 2:10by the notion of a motorsports venue that was somewhat effective
- 2:14in attracting female participants.
- 2:16As one of my primary research interests is women who successfully negotiate
- 2:21entry into masculine car cultures.
- 2:23such as muscle cars and pickup trucks.
- 2:25I thought that an investigation of women who participate in autocross
- 2:29would be an interesting, perhaps, revelational project to pursue.
- 2:32Of course, shortly after that conference, COVID closed everything down, including
- 2:36a large number of motorsports events.
- 2:39So I had to wait a couple of years before embarking on the autocross study.
- 2:43I began attending motorsports events in the fall of 2021 and just recently
- 2:47completed the transcription of the last of 31 one hour interviews conducted
- 2:52with female autocross drivers.
- 2:54I also spent a great deal of time on social media and locations such
- 2:57as the aforementioned Women on Track Facebook page where women
- 3:01asked questions, posted results, and provided support for one another.
- 3:05This presentation today is a first attempt to introduce my initial findings.
- 3:10The study of women in autocross is important for a number of reasons.
- 3:13Scholarship on women in motorsports tend to fall into two camps.
- 3:17Sexist attitudes and practices which create barriers to women's
- 3:20professional motocross participation and monographs focused on the success
- 3:24of exceptional women who have made it in the masculine world of motorsports.
- 3:29Amateur motorsports as a potential stepping stone to professional
- 3:32aspirations as a male dominated activity in which men participate.
- 3:37or as a source of female identity and empowerment has not been examined.
- 3:41Although women comprise over 50 percent of licensed drivers, women's participation
- 3:45in motorsports at all levels and all types of events is less than 4%.
- 3:50However, women have at times represented nearly 20 percent of autocross
- 3:54participants on a national level.
- 3:57This suggests that there are qualities of autocross that are particularly
- 4:00appealing to women drivers.
- 4:02And that women have developed successful strategies to become integrated and
- 4:05accepted into the autocross community.
- 4:08How women negotiate entry in a traditionally hypermasculine culture
- 4:11such as motorsports has relevance not only to activities associated with
- 4:15the automobile, but to any location in which masculinity and male culture
- 4:19hampers women's participation.
- 4:22Therefore, as I began this investigation into women's autocross
- 4:25participation, my initial objective was to address the following questions.
- 4:30Who are the women who participate in autocross?
- 4:33What strategies do women call upon to gain entry into the autocross arena?
- 4:37What are the qualities that attract women to autocross?
- 4:40How do women benefit from autocross participation?
- 4:43What are the obstacles to women's autocross participation?
- 4:47And how does women's participation challenge and reshape autocross culture?
- 4:51So what exactly is autocross?
- 4:53Although I suspect most of you are familiar with it, I
- 4:55thought I would provide a short description for those who are not.
- 4:58Autocross is a timed competition in which drivers navigate one at a time through a
- 5:03unique course defined by cones or pylons.
- 5:06Autocross events are typically held on flat paved surfaces like parking lots or
- 5:11airport tarmacs with few obstructions.
- 5:13Unlike racetracks, autocross courses vary in size, surface, and layout.
- 5:18Each event presents a new challenge.
- 5:20Events typically have many classes that allow almost any vehicle,
- 5:23with the possible exception of SUVs and pickup trucks, to compete.
- 5:27While speeds are generally no greater than those encountered on the highway, success
- 5:31at autocross requires concentration, precision maneuvering, and quick reflexes.
- 5:36Autocross welcomes drivers of all ages and all abilities.
- 5:39The only equipment required is a driver's license, approved helmet, and vehicle.
- 5:43Although I have not participated in Autocross as a driver, I observed at two
- 5:47local Autocross events held at a driver's education lot and a regional pro solo
- 5:52event which took place at the Toledo airport to gain a better understanding
- 5:55of Autocross and the women who run in it.
- 5:58Who are the women who participate in Autocross?
- 6:01The women who contributed to this project were recruited from local events as well
- 6:05as the SCCA Women on Track Facebook page.
- 6:08They ranged in age from 23 to 72, with the largest group,
- 6:1230%, from the 30 to 39 range.
- 6:15The women varied in autocross experience levels from less than
- 6:18one year to nearly 50, beginners to national championship winners.
- 6:2284 percent were married or partnered, but just 23 percent had children.
- 6:2620 percent identified as non white and 90 percent as heterosexual.
- 6:30While women in warm weather states were in the majority, no doubt due
- 6:33to the extended racing seasons in those climates, women in other areas
- 6:37of the country were well represented.
- 6:40In terms of political ideology of those who provided an answer, 60 percent leaned
- 6:44left, 25 percent were moderate, and 15 percent identified as conservative.
- 6:49While the sample size is not large enough to be generalizable, the
- 6:52demographics do provide an interesting contrast to the white male conservative
- 6:56population that makes up the overwhelming majority of the motorsports population.
- 7:01This disparity does not only explain why women often have difficulty
- 7:04entering the motorsports arena, but also suggests that, in greater numbers,
- 7:08women have the potential to alter the motorsports culture to be more
- 7:12diverse, inclusive, and supportive.
- 7:14So what strategies do women call upon to gain entry into the autocross arena?
- 7:19An interest in automobiles in general, and motorsports in particular, is not
- 7:23cultivated in the majority of young women.
- 7:25Not only are gendered practices regarding toys that move enforced at a very young
- 7:29age, but women who express more than an average fascination with cars are
- 7:33often labeled unnatural or freakish.
- 7:36Consequently, women are often unaware of motorsports as something in which they can
- 7:39participate, unless encouraged by someone or something with knowledge or interest.
- 7:44While a few of the women came from racing or car centric families, Most
- 7:49were introduced to autocross through car clubs, work environments, other
- 7:53racing communities such as motorcycles or more often by male significant
- 7:57others, fathers, brothers or co workers.
- 7:59Many of the men considered the participation of their wives or
- 8:02girlfriends as a way to rationalize their own autocross habit as well
- 8:06as an opportunity to spend more time together doing something they enjoyed.
- 8:10The women, who often shared cars with husbands or boyfriends,
- 8:13appreciated the male support and found pleasure and excitement in
- 8:16the shared autocross experience.
- 8:19So, what are the qualities that attract women to autocross?
- 8:21The first is affordability.
- 8:23Autocross is the most affordable of all motorsports.
- 8:26When starting out, many of the women use daily drivers to see if autocross
- 8:30is something they might want to pursue.
- 8:32Car sharing is encouraged in autocross.
- 8:34Couples often co drive cars and carless women will usually find
- 8:37someone with whom to share a vehicle.
- 8:39Autocross entries are less expensive than other motorsports and there
- 8:43is less wear and tear in the car, although avid autocrossers
- 8:46go through a whole lot of tires.
- 8:48Autocross Historically and culturally, women have been
- 8:50directed toward practical vehicles.
- 8:52Consequently, it is often difficult for them to rationalize spending
- 8:55money on something as impractical and excessive as a race car.
- 8:59The use of a daily driver and the ability to car share makes the money directed
- 9:03toward autocross easier to justify.
- 9:06The woman also mentioned the accessibility of autocross.
- 9:09Experience and special driving skills are not required.
- 9:12Autocross is very much a learn as you go motorsport.
- 9:15There are always individuals on hand eager to ride along with novice drivers, provide
- 9:19instruction, and explain the basics.
- 9:21Many of the women began by attending autocross events with boyfriends or
- 9:25husbands as spectators, eventually proclaiming that I can do this
- 9:29and taking the wheel themselves.
- 9:31Another quality that attracts women is safety.
- 9:34Numerous studies have demonstrated that as a population, women
- 9:37are safer drivers than men.
- 9:38Culturally, women are considered responsible for family safety and are
- 9:42encouraged to purchase vehicles with an abundance of features that will
- 9:45protect their family and loved ones.
- 9:47It is no surprise, therefore, that most of the women mention safety as an important
- 9:51component of autocross participation.
- 9:54Safety in autocross takes two forms.
- 9:56First, autocross organizations have established policies and procedures
- 10:00to make sure people on site, in cars, and on the course are safe.
- 10:04Secondly, the course itself is designed to minimize conditions that could cause harm.
- 10:09Cars are run one at a time on a flat, closed course without obstructions.
- 10:12The only object which could cause car damage is a plastic cone.
- 10:16As a test of coordination, concentration, and driving skill,
- 10:19rather than power and performance, cars rarely get above 60 miles an hour.
- 10:23Many of the mothers in the group mention that autocross relieves
- 10:26the worry that something will happen to them on the track.
- 10:29Although most racing events are associated with high speed, risk,
- 10:31and daring, autocross is promoted and experienced as an exciting, exhilarating,
- 10:36adrenaline pumping, yet ultimately safe way to experience more sport.
- 10:41The most popular quality that attracts women to autocross is camaraderie.
- 10:45Almost all women mention the camaraderie and support of the autocross community
- 10:49as a prime motivation for participation.
- 10:52As most come to autocross with little experience and a lot of trepidation,
- 10:55the support of other autocrossers helps to ease tension, build
- 10:59confidence, and become comfortable in the motorsports environment.
- 11:02There is a lot of downtime in autocross.
- 11:04With just three to five minutes of actual driving each day, the women
- 11:07use time spent in the grid and the impound to talk with other drivers,
- 11:11discuss what went right and what went wrong, and learn from each other.
- 11:14They talk about cars at lunch, at setups, or while working on the site.
- 11:18Autocross is a volunteer activity.
- 11:20If you run, you have to work.
- 11:21So helping with registration, working the course, spending an hour in the timing
- 11:25trailer, or volunteering as an instructor provides time to socialize while gaining
- 11:29a better understanding of the sport.
- 11:31Many of the women are active on social media and develop online friendships.
- 11:35Some attend regional and national events, where the large group of
- 11:38female entrants provide a sense of solidarity and empowerment.
- 11:41Many of the women refer to the autocross community as family,
- 11:44and feel that autocross has extended their circle of friends.
- 11:47to all corners of the country.
- 11:49One of the ways camaraderie is nurtured is the ladies classes.
- 11:52However, as an activity in which men and women are segregated,
- 11:56there is always controversy.
- 11:57Those opposed to ladies classes believe that women can only
- 12:00improve by beating the boys.
- 12:01Those in favor cite the potential increase in female participation
- 12:05generated by ladies classes.
- 12:07Many women start in ladies and move to open once their confidence
- 12:10and skill levels have improved.
- 12:12Some run in open locally where there's often little competition
- 12:15in ladies and switch to ladies at regional and national events.
- 12:20I attended a regional event at which there were large ladies classes,
- 12:24and the camaraderie and support among the participants was palpable.
- 12:27The women began the day by joining in a group dance in the grid, then
- 12:30congratulated and commiserated with each other in the impound
- 12:33after all had completed their runs.
- 12:35Photos from the SCCA Solo Nationals held in Lincoln, Nebraska, featured dozens
- 12:39of photos with women from all over the country joining together in solidarity.
- 12:43As many of the women mentioned, when gathered together in the ladies classes,
- 12:47they feel confident and newly empowered.
- 12:49So, how do women benefit from autocross participation?
- 12:53Many of the women mentioned how autocross changed their relationship
- 12:56with the automobile in significant ways.
- 12:58Not only does autocross provide the opportunity to understand the car
- 13:01better, but it teaches important driving skills that translate to everyday life.
- 13:06Autocross also provides an experience unequaled in daily
- 13:09driving, the thrill of driving fast.
- 13:11The adrenaline of competition, the opportunity to continue to improve one's
- 13:15performance, the mental challenge, the chance to be a badass behind the wheel.
- 13:20Many of the women enjoy the surprise of others when they discover that
- 13:22the mild mannered school teacher or uptight business manager
- 13:25autocrosses on the weekends.
- 13:28Autocross can change women.
- 13:29They become more confident in their skills and in themselves, more outgoing
- 13:32and self assured in relationship with others, better equipped to handle stress
- 13:36in everyday life, and closer to those with whom they share the autocross experience.
- 13:40Those who do especially well in autocross have unique opportunities to compete for
- 13:44national championships, test drive cars in other parts of the country, and become
- 13:48ambassadors for all autocrossing women.
- 13:51What are the obstacles to women's participation?
- 13:54In order to consider participating in autocross, one has to know it exists.
- 13:58Most women are unaware that engaging in motorsports on such an accessible
- 14:01and affordable level is possible.
- 14:03Those who do find their way to an autocross event often start out fearful.
- 14:07Not by the course or getting behind the wheel, but are nervous
- 14:10they will embarrass themselves in front of friends, family, and most
- 14:13especially, the men in attendance.
- 14:16Positive interactions with newcomers to autocross are
- 14:18essential for retaining new drivers.
- 14:21Those who have remained in autocross cite the camaraderie of the
- 14:23autocross community as responsible for their continued participation.
- 14:28The woman I spoke to mentioned how in the beginning, they were able to get
- 14:31over their fears through the actions and assistance of more experienced
- 14:34drivers, especially other women.
- 14:36Now that they have gained confidence as drivers, the women actively play
- 14:39it forward to autocross novices.
- 14:41Out of the 31 women interviewed for this project, only 7 had children.
- 14:46This points to the biggest obstacle in female participation, how to accommodate
- 14:50families so that women can drive.
- 14:52As culturally women are considered responsible for child care, if someone
- 14:55has to stay home with the kids while the other runs at autocross, it is
- 14:59almost always the female partner.
- 15:01Women within autocross organizations have developed groups to
- 15:04specifically address the obstacles that hamper women in the sport.
- 15:07One of the key tasks was to create an environment that
- 15:10encourages family participation.
- 15:12The ladies classes were, in fact, developed in part to address this issue.
- 15:16If a couple shares a car but not the same class, one parent can watch
- 15:20the kids while the other competes.
- 15:22This has allowed women who had reluctantly stayed at home to
- 15:24not only have the opportunity to run, but to share in a mutually
- 15:27enjoyable activity with the family.
- 15:30Historically, motor sports has been dominated by white conservative men.
- 15:34As indicated by many of the women, some of the old timers have
- 15:37misogynistic views that hamper, if not discourage, females participation.
- 15:41Women who participate with male partners are often somewhat
- 15:44shielded from this type of behavior.
- 15:46Those who don't either learn to avoid such individuals or learn
- 15:48to let it roll off their backs.
- 15:50Women within the autocross community work diligently to make
- 15:53the environment a welcoming one.
- 15:55While this has been mostly successful in the ladies classes, There need to be
- 15:58more women in autocross on all levels, particularly in leadership positions,
- 16:03to effect that kind of cultural change.
- 16:05How does women's participation challenge and reshape autocross culture?
- 16:09Women in autocross understand that it is on them to increase female participation.
- 16:14Often this means gaining respect and working their way into places of authority
- 16:18within various motorsports organizations.
- 16:20Becoming active in autocross clubs and programs provides the opportunity
- 16:24to create and implement policies beneficial to the female drivers.
- 16:28Many of the women I spoke to volunteer as committee chairs, club officers,
- 16:32program directors, newsletter editors, photographers, graphic designers, social
- 16:36media administrators, and a multitude of other positions that provide access and
- 16:40influence to the autocross community.
- 16:42Others take part on a more basic level by volunteering as instructors
- 16:46and creating a welcoming environment for those new to the sport.
- 16:49Women led groups within autocross organizations work to serve
- 16:52the needs of female drivers.
- 16:53They not only develop strategies to recruit more women to
- 16:56autocross, but also work to secure sponsors to create scholarship
- 17:00opportunities for novice women.
- 17:01By working from within, Women in autocross have the opportunity not only
- 17:05to increase female participation, but in doing so, change the culture of autocross
- 17:10from a historically white, masculine fraternity to a diverse and inclusive
- 17:13community that welcomes all drivers.
- 17:16Autocross is an amateur activity.
- 17:18Although women have achieved great success on the autocross stage,
- 17:21the sport is rarely a route to a professional career in motorsports.
- 17:24Rather, it is an activity taken on for its challenges, thrills, uniqueness,
- 17:28fun, and most importantly, camaraderie.
- 17:31It provides an opportunity to develop friendships with those who
- 17:34share an interest from all walks of life from all over the country.
- 17:37For those with autocrossing partners, it is a chance to spend time together
- 17:40in a mutually enjoyed pastime.
- 17:42To the women in autocross, success is not only measured by time on the clock.
- 17:46Rather, it's about successfully applying oneself to an undertaking
- 17:50that is challenging, invigorating, exhausting, and ultimately rewarding.
- 17:54It is about learning and improving skills one run at a time.
- 17:57It is about bringing other women into the sport and helping, teaching,
- 18:00commiserating, and encouraging them.
- 18:02It is about creating a supportive, welcoming, and empowering community,
- 18:05not just for women, but for everyone involved in the autocross hobby.
- 18:09That concludes this presentation.
- 18:11Thank you for your attention, and I am welcome to any questions.
- 18:23Can you tell me how to get in touch with SCCA and get my wife involved in this?
- 18:28Yes I can.
- 18:30I interviewed her.
- 18:32Do any of the women involved in autocross move up?
- 18:36to another category, like a track racing or rattling?
- 18:39Some of them do.
- 18:39I was curious about that.
- 18:40Some of them do track days, and they do driver's education, but very few of them
- 18:45go on to any wheel to wheel competition.
- 18:48Problem with those activities is they're more expensive.
- 18:51Gasoline's expensive, it's more wear and tear in the car, so
- 18:54most of them just stick to autos.
- 18:55And a lot of them have been doing it for 40 or 50 years.
- 18:58Been doing it for a really long time.
- 18:59Some of them are quite good.
- 19:01They have national championships.
- 19:03So another way to come at this is to look at an organization
- 19:06that promotes this kind of thing.
- 19:08I was thinking about the Porsche Club of America, as you spoke,
- 19:11whose slogan, by the way, is, It's not the cars, it's the people.
- 19:14Their propaganda, to all media, is filled with the sense that this is
- 19:19a family friendly set of activities.
- 19:22Many photographs of men and women, although generally heterosexual couples.
- 19:26At the same time, it's pretty clear that the power brokers within the organization
- 19:30at various levels are nearly all male.
- 19:33And the little bit of marketing information I've seen, particularly if
- 19:36you exclude the SUVs, show that nearly all Porsche purchasers or leasers are males.
- 19:44It's kind of a difficult situation.
- 19:46Right, well I, actually one of the women I spoke to started an
- 19:50autocross through the Porsche Club.
- 19:52She and her husband drive Boxsters.
- 19:54But she mentioned that they don't have ladies classes in the Porsche Club.
- 19:58Everybody has to run it open.
- 19:59So if you're sharing a car, that becomes problematic.
- 20:02It's okay if you don't have children, but if you do, then it's an issue.
- 20:04But like I said, most of the women I talked to didn't have
- 20:07children, and perhaps that's what made them able to participate in
- 20:10this for a long period of time.
- 20:12If I missed it, I apologize, but have you done this yourself, or in
- 20:16all of the research that you were doing, did you get the urge to get
- 20:19behind the wheel and do it yourself?
- 20:20Uh, no I have not, and I am too old to start, but I would like
- 20:25to ride along with somebody.
- 20:26I think that would be alright, but I don't really want to try it myself.
- 20:29I'm not that confident of a driver.
- 20:32I didn't know it existed when I was younger, so.
- 20:34I think it should be pointed out that the national, SCCA National Solo
- 20:38Championship is probably one of the largest motorsport events in the world.
- 20:43Yes.
- 20:44In Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 20:45As a former director of SCCA, I've watched this sport develop.
- 20:49And it used to be, yes, a lot of people who did autocrossing went into racing.
- 20:55It doesn't seem to be that crossover anymore.
- 20:58Most of the people who go autocrossing do autocrossing and
- 21:02that's, that's as far as they go.
- 21:04But it is still an incredibly popular event, and it is, as I say, once again,
- 21:10I've forgotten the exact numbers, but I think it approaches a thousand.
- 21:13Yeah, I think they hit twelve hundred this year, and they hit a lot of women.
- 21:16That sounds right.
- 21:17I know some friends who went.
- 21:18Yeah, a lot of the women I talked to went.
- 21:21That's the event you should go to.
- 21:23Yeah, it's in October.
- 21:25Hi, my name is Luis Martinez, and I'm very active in the Porsche Club of America.
- 21:29I used to be the president of the Finger Lakes region, and I'm a track
- 21:33instructor here at Watkins Glen, and I have been for over 20 years.
- 21:36Just going to give you a few positive examples of women
- 21:38in Porsche Club of America.
- 21:40The youngest ever track instructor certified by PCA by Porsche
- 21:44Club of America is Ashley Novak.
- 21:46She was 18 years old, and she was a track instructor here and elsewhere,
- 21:50and now, of course, she's married and has a family and all that.
- 21:53Another positive example is Aurora Strauss.
- 21:56Her father is Ari Strauss.
- 21:57Aurora Strauss, I remember when she was 11 years old, 12 years old, and she was
- 22:02being taught how to drive at Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, New York.
- 22:07Today, she's a professional AMSA driver as well as a Harvard graduate.
- 22:10Just last week, I released a story that went to the PCA Club Racing
- 22:14News, which is based in California, about a husband wife club racing
- 22:19team, Steve and Mary Schindler.
- 22:21Whom I've known and they were here in June and I wrote a story about Mary
- 22:25and Steve and they each have what I call his and hers car and they both,
- 22:30they change, I mean, they race in different categories, but they do race.
- 22:34I could go on with many examples of being active in club racing
- 22:38sports for over 50 years.
- 22:40Thank you.
- 22:41With your background in riding car commercials, I was thinking you
- 22:45might be the perfect person to do a presentation or a book on women.
- 22:50in automotive advertising.
- 22:52Any thoughts on that?
- 22:54I'd like to leave my advertising past behind.
- 22:58I did write an article that was in the, um, Automotive History Review about my
- 23:03time spent at McCann Erickson working on Buick and GMC truck, and I did do
- 23:08some advertising that focused on women, which at the time, this was in the 80s,
- 23:12which was very unusual at the time.
- 23:15But as a book, nah, no.
- 23:17But thanks for the idea.
- 23:18In which states do most of this autocross happen?
- 23:22Well, the women I talked to were, a lot of them were on the west coast,
- 23:26but there were also people in Utah, Texas, Georgia, Florida, New York.
- 23:32They were pretty much from all over.
- 23:34I think they just have a longer racing season on the west coast than
- 23:37they do, obviously, in the north.
- 23:40But I know they autocross in the rain, I don't know if they autocross on the ice.
- 23:42Right.
- 23:44Thank you, Chris.
